1989 Lady Tiger Season In Review On August 14,1989, Mike Lingenfelter, the former head coach of the University of Cincinnati, met his inherited Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball team for the first time. "I was really blind to what to expect from the team," explained Lingenfelter who had resigned his post at UC to tryout for the United States National Team. "At best, the season was a pleasant surprise." For the third consecutive year the Lady Tigers won over 20 matches (26-15) and finished third in the Metro Conference. "We had a lot of injuries early in the season, and at times the season looked bleak," Lingenfelter said. The Lady Tigers opened their 1989 season finishing a disappointing third at their own Lady Tiger Cup, losing to Southwest Missouri State and Florida while beating Arkansas State and South Alabama. Rhonda Kottke, a two-time During the team's first road trip to the University of all-Metro selection Illinois' Illini Classic, Lingenfelter's court crew could not get oriented and finished in fourth place. Losing to St. Louis in Springfield, 111., the Lady Tigers were 2-5 before returning home to host the MSU-Graphic Systems Classic. During that tournament, the Lady Tigers compiled a 4-0 record beating Utah State in the championship, 13-15, 15-13, 15-9, 12-15, 15-12. Senior setter Clare Dirksen earned all-Tournament honors. Memphis State surpassed the .500 (8-7) mark, finishing second at the Tennessee Exercise Essentials Classic. The team's only loss was at the expense of nationally ranked Colorado. The Lady Tigers upset in-state rival Tennessee in three straight games, 16-14, 15-12,15-10. In Metro Conference action, the Lady Tigers won four straight matches (Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Tulane and Southern Mississippi) before losing a hard fought five game match to regionally ranked Florida State. In that match the Lady Tigers won the first two games, 16-14,15-8, before the Lady Seminole's frontline got on target and shelled MSU, 15-11, 15-9, 15-1 in the final three games. All-Metro Conference honoree The only other conference loss the Lady Tigers incurred Katherine Lehman during the 1989 regular season was a 5-15,15-17,15-7,2-15

18

1989 Lady Tiger Season In Review With that championship victory, Lingenfelter's adopted troop had finished the season with a 25-14 overall record and a 5-2 Metro Conference slate, the best-ever regular season conference finish for the Lady Tigers. Going into the Metro Conference Championship Tournament, not a single Lady Tiger had earned Metro Conference Player of the Week honors. However, at the tournament awards banquet, Dirksen and teammates Katherine Lehman and Rhonda Kottke each earned all-Conference honors. In first round action, it took the second seeded Lady Tigers four games to beat seventh seed Virginia Tech. Lehman, who was the team's top hitter and second leading blocker, injured an ankle prior to the tournament and was able to see only limited action. Cincinnnati, a team the Lady Tigers had beaten in four games during the regular season, was their semi-final opponent. After losing the first game, 15-7, Lingenfelter regrouped his forces and took the next two games, 15-13, Junior middle hitter Lori Rembe 16-14. Those wins took too much out of the Lady Tigers as they lost for the third straight year in the conference tournament to Cincinnati, dropping the final two games, 15-4,15-9. "I thought if we had a .500 season it would have been a good year," stated Lingenfelter. "I was disappointed with the outcome at the Metro Tournament because I thought we had come a long way and could have done better. Overall I was pleased with where we got as a team and I expect to do even better this season." The Lady Tigers lost Dirksen, the school's all-time assist leader and senior Jenny McCoy. Dirksen also ranked on the school's all-time dig and service ace list. With eight returning letter winners, Lingenfelter and his Lady Tiger volleyballers have the potential to capture their first Metro Conference title and to have yet another 20-win season.

Metro Conference Volleyball History The Metro Conference, originally known as the Metro Six, was formed on June 13, 1975. Charter members were the University of Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, the University of Louisville, St. Louis University, Tulane and Memphis State. Florida State joined the Metro in 1976, and after Georgia Tech withdrew in 1978, Virginia Tech was welcomed into the league that same year. Volleyball was added to the Metro sports calendar in 1980 when the seven member schools competed in the first Metro Volleyball Tournament in Memphis. St. Louis emerged as the initial conference champion. In 1981, Cincinnati claimed the Metro Tournament crown, but it was Florida State which made its mark on the national scene that season, posting a 43-8 record and finishing fourth hi the AIAW National Championships. St. Louis withdrew from the Metro in 1982, but was quickly replaced by the University of Southern Mississippi. At the league tournament in Tallahassee, Louisville stopped Cincinnati's bid to repeat, defeating the Lady Bearcats in the title match. In 1983, the University of South Carolina became the eighth league member, and Florida State began its current era of Metro domination. Since then, FSU has captured six championships and lost only four of 55 matches against conference foes. Powering to a 31-8 mark behind the play of 1983 Metro Tournament MVP Karyn Palgut, the Lady Seminoles reached the national ranking of 15th during the 1983 season on their way to a 17th place finish at the NCAA Tournament. A year later, South Carolina provided the only break in Florida State's title string. Led by star hitter Lori Rowe, the Lady Gamecocks eliminated FSU in the semi-finals before defeating Louisville in the championship. Rowe remains the lone player in Metro history to be named to the all-tournament team four times. Tulane withdrew from the Metro in 1985, reducing league membership to seven. Later that year, Florida State successfully reclaimed the conference crown, posting a 22-10 record. Featuring powerful hitters Joan Morris and Julie Todd, FSU bested South Carolina in the title match and placed 17th in the NCAA Tournament. The following year saw much of the same story, as FSU went 6-0 in Conference play and again conquered South Carolina hi the Tournament final. Morris was named Metro Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year and became the only two-tune MVP. Cincinnati coach Mike Lingenfelter was named 1986 Metro Coach of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. Another undefeated Metro regular season slate set the stage for Florida State's third straight title in 1987. The 25-11 Lady Seminoles were led by 1987 Tournament MVP Todd. Runner-up Cincinnati posted an impressive 26-8 mark behind the play of two-time All-Metro selection Sonja Jackson. Cincinnati's Lingenfelter and Memphis State's Jim Callender shared Metro Coach of the Year honors. In 1988, Florida State's conference match win streak ended at 22 with an early-season defeat at the hands of South Carolina, but the overall Metro volleyball story line varied little from previous seasons as the Lady Seminoles swept to their fourth consecutive Metro championship behind the play of senior middle blocker Deanne Kaleta. Kaleta was named Tournament MVP and ended her career as a two-time All-Metro member. Metro Coach of the Year Cecile Reynaud guided Florida State to a 28-8 mark, but FSU was ambushed by Colorado State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cincinnati, which fell to the Lady Seminoles in a tough four-game Metro title match, completed its second strong year in a row, with a 28-7 overall mark (5-1, Metro). Louisville's Laurie Maxwell garnered Metro Rookie of the Year honors. Tulane rejoined the conference in 1989, bringing Metro membership back to eight, but while the number of league members changed, the end result remained the same. Florida State completed its regular season conference slate undefeated (7-0) and took home its sixth 37

Metro Conference Volleyball History league championship in seven years, again defeating Cincinnati in the title match. For leading FSU to a 30-5 record, Reynaud was a repeat Metro Coach of the Year honoree, while Lady Seminole senior setter Nancy Gaspadarek became the first player in conference annals to be named to the All-Metro and all-tournament squads three times. Gaspadarek closed out her career in style, capturing MVP honors at the 1990 league tournament. FSU came up empty once again in the NCAA Tournament, falling in their first round to California. For the second consecutive year, a Lady Cardinal — Shannon Misek — was selected Rookie of the Year as Louisville posted an impressive 21-12 mark. Memphis State continued its resurgence, finishing at 26-15 behind the play of senior setter Clare Dirksen. Dirksen joined Gaspadarek as the only three-time All-Metro team members in league history. Including volleyball, 14 Metro Conference championships are decided annually. Other women's sports include basketball, cross country, golf, swimming/diving, tennis and track. Men participate in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, swimming/diving, tennis and track.

Memphis State University

The roots of Memphis State date back to September 15,1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee State Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seed for the normal school's creation were sown three years earlier, in 1909, when the Tennessee General Assembly passed a General Education, law calling for the establishment and maintenance of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the State. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which, in 1925 became the West Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1941, the College's curriculum in liberal arts was expanded, and the name was changed to Memphis State College, an institution serving three to four thousand students. The undergraduate program was reorganized into three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1,1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university and has since expanded is degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000.
