2013 Memphis Tigers Soccer Defense, Defense, Defense...

The Tigers have allowed six goals through six games, and have already posted three clean sheets. This marks the fourth time since 1999 that Memphis has allowed six goals or less in the team’s first six games (2004, 2007, 2011, 2013). This is the second time in that span where the team has three or more shutouts in six games. Memphis has accomplished the feat two other times in program history. Under Peter Bermel in 1985, the team allowed six goals in six games. Chris Bartels’ 1992 team allowed just four goals in the first six games of the season and posted five shutouts in those games. Memphis has won 10 or more games in all six of these seasons.

Memphis vs. Ranked Opponents...

With the 2-1 win over No. 21 Charlotte on Sunday, Memphis is now 4-1-1 in its last six games against ranked opponents, and has outscored the opposition 10-7 in those games.

In addition, fellower newcomers Fakhry Khulfan, Jordan Klipsch, Kenneth Kauker, Raul Gonzalez and Hunter Danna have also made appearances so far this season.

Keely scored his second goal of the season on an assist from Liam Collins. Both of Keely’s goals this season have been game-winners. His first goal came in the season-opening 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 30. Memphis was trailing 1-0 until the 80th minute, when freshman Kenneth Kauker scored to tie the game for Memphis. Kauker’s first career goal was set up by another freshman, Raul Gonzalez. Mark Sherrod led the Tigers with four shots and two shots on goal. Gonzalez, Keely and Kauker each had a shot on goal. Collins, Sherrod, Keely and Gonzalez were each named to the AllTournament Team for their performances this weekend. Cody Uzcategui picked up his fourth victory of the season in goal and made two saves. The Memphis defense was able to limit the Charlotte attack for most of the game, as the 49ers finished with just three shots on goal. The Tigers defense also forced Charlotte into nine offsides calls.

The game was tied for most of the first half. In the 44th minute, Charlotte broke through for the 1-0 lead on a goal by Luke Waechter. The goal was the first allowed by Memphis in the first half this season. The Tigers were able to turn up the pressure after halftime and get the two goals in the second half. Gonzalez and Sherrod each had chances midway through the second half. In the 63rd minute, Gonzalez forced a save by Charlotte keeper Klay Davis to keep the 49ers up 1-0. Sherrod got a header on target but was denied by Davis in the 75th minute. Kauker broke through for Memphis just five minutes after Sherrod’s chance. Memphis capitalized on that momentum and Keely scored just six minutes later and Memphis held on for the victory.
