2000 Season Preview
2000 Tiger Soccer: A Balanced Attack As Tiger head coach Richie Grant heads into his second season at the helm of the Memphis Men's Soccer Team, he does so with a balanced ship. A team that is heavy on experince and leadership will be counterbalanced by the addition of ten freshmen to the roster. A team that has added several potent weapons on the offensive end has also shored up its defensive side with the addition of several key players. In addition, a Tiger team that has always balanced local talent with talent from abroad has added players from Memphis, Texas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Vermont, Ireland, and Norway. The Tigers lost six seniors off of last season's roster, and they are counting on this years crop of seniors to step up and take Memphis soccer to the next level. Leadership from N i c k Glaser and Michael Shipman in the Tiger midfield and Ryan Schwaigert in the defense will be counted on, since many of the incoming freshmen will see significant playing time. Up front, senior Tommy White W joins juniors Sean Fraser and Lars Thorstensen in a potent ,^^ offensive combination of speed, *i^T physical play and skill. White brings speed and an aggressive mentality into his fourth season with the Tigers, and r Fraser led the team in shots and goals and was selected second-team all-CUSA in 1999. Thorstensen is coming to the Tigers after spending the last two seasons at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where he scored 56 goals in two seasons to lead the Lambuth men's team through the Mid South Conference and was selected as an NAIA all-American as a sophomore. Sophomore Kirk Ricketts also returns for his second season as a Tiger after scoring one goal in nine appearances in 1999. In the midfield, seniors Nick Glaser and Michael Shipman will be joined again by junior Justin Stralka, who is expected to play a significant role on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field this season. Junior Ken Matsuba returns after missing much of last season with a foot injury, and the upperclassmen will welcome four newcomers to the Tiger midfieid. Local high school standout Grant Paule, Texans Michael Floyd and Dusty Brezovsky, and Wisconsin native Nelson Ennis will all be counted on to contribute significant minutes in the Tiger midfield this season. Grant Paule has an excellent grasp of the game and impressive skills,

as he proved by leading his Houston H.S. team to a second consecutive NSCAA national championship in the spring of 2000. Brezovsky and Ennis are both W-^ natural left-sided players, which the Tigers lacked last season. On the defensive end, the Tigers return two of three consistent starters at the defender position from the 1999 squad. Stephen Lewis, a junior, and Ryan Schwaigert, a senior, will command the Tiger backfield as cocaptains this season. They are joined by senior Davicl Medlock, who started the final two matches of the season, sophomore Chris Schmidt, and newcomers Graham Gibbs, Josh Ravit, and Cory Shumate. Gibbs is an Irish recruit who has great potential and is expected to have an immediate impact on the Tiger defense. Shumate is a Bartlett, Tenn., native and another product of the Memphis Futbol Club, which also produced Tommy White, Ryan Schwaigert, Stephen Lewis, and former Tigers Brian Covey, Joey Lewis, and Stephen Brooks. Josh Ravit is a Vermont native who brings excellent size and a strong right foot to the defensive arsenal of the Tigers. That defense will be counted on heavily, since all three goalkeepers on the roster this season are true freshmen. Local high school standout Clark Talley, who teamed with Paule on that National Championship team for the last two seasons, elected to stay home and will compete for the starting spot this season. He will be challenged by Joshua Schmidt, another freshman who possesses a great amount of potential, and by Josh Isaacs, an exciting player who promises to be an emotiona leader from the net for Memphis in years to come. Coach Grant also made some changes to the schedule going into his second season with the Tiger soccer program. The Tigers open the season by hosting the Memphis Invitational, which will include Birmingham Southern, Marshall, and Belmont, before travelling to invitational tournaments at Southwest Missouri State, Charlotte, and South Florida. Memphis will host conference games against perennial top-10 Saint Louis, defending regular season conference champion UAB, . Marquette, and Louisville, as well as nonconference games against Western Kentucky, Lipscomb University, and Alabama A&M. It promises to be an exciting season at the U of M this season, ' as experience and youth take the field together to take Tiger soccer to the next level with a new brand of soccer.

Troy Ryan Shea Norwood Graduate Assistant
Assistant Coach Ryan Shea joined the University of Memphis staff after a strong career as a player and coach at Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wise. He earned his bachelor's degree, double majoring in business marketing and management in May of 1999. The Council Bluffs, Iowa, native had a four-year playing career at Viterbo that ended in 1997. Following his playing days, Shea joined the Viterbo coaching staff as an assistant. Shea assisted in all aspects of the Viterbo program and served as the school's interim head coach in the spring of 1998. In the fall of 1998, his first full season as a coach, the V-Hawks went undefeated in conference play and advanced to the regional finals. Shea served as the V-Hawks team captain during his junior and senior seasons, leading them to back-toback Midwest Classic Conference Championships. A defender, Shea was named to the first-team all-conference team in 1997 and was an honorable mention all-conference pick the year before. Shea was a four-year starter and a two-time allcity conference selection at St. Albert High School in Council Bluffs. He was named the team's MVP and the City Player of the Year during his senior year. Shea earned his National Coaching Diploma through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in July. The 24-year old is single and has two siblings. His parents Dennis Shea and Patsy Swigg still reside in Iowa.
Troy Norwood begins his third season as a graduate assistant for the University of Memphis. Norwood is familiar with the Tiger Soccer program, having played for Memphis in 1988-89. As a starting goalkeeper, Norwood made 134 saves in 31 games and posted a 1.53 goals against average. Prior to his collegiate career, Norwood prepped at White Station High School in Memphis. He was twice named the Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps soccer Player of the Year, and helped lead White Station to the Tennessee State Finals his senior year. Norwood was also the goalkeeper for the Olympic Development Pool Southern Regional team from 1985-1987. After his two seasons with the Tigers, Norwood transferred to cross-town rival Christian Brothers University where he graduated with a degree in business administration. Over the next eight years, Norwood coached various Memphis youth sports, including the Rangers, Fury, and United Soccer Clubs. He has coached Boys Varsity Soccer at Lausaane Collegiate School and taught elementary physical education. For the Tigers, Norwood oversees the team's academic responsibilites, and he is licensed by the United States Soccer Federation. Norwood, a Memphis native, is single with a younger brother and sister-in-law who graduated from future C-USA rival TCU. He is currently working on his masters of arts in education. Norwood's parents Stan and Bonnie Norwood reside in Cordova.
Paul Con way Graduate Assistant Paul is entering his first season with Tiger Soccer. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Paul first came to the U.S. to play for Coach Grant at Lambuth University. He has coached the Jackson (Tenn.) Soccer Club for the last four years, and holds an FAI coaching certification. He also serves as an OOP evaluator. In his playing days, Conway graduated from Ireland's Soccer School of Excellence, whose team he captained in 1995 when they captured a national title.

Player Profiles - Seniors
NICK GLASER SENIOR, MF HENDERSONVILLE, TENN.
Glaser brings experience and leadership to the Tiger midfield, filling a vacancy left by last season's cocaptain Joey Lewis. This summer Glaser trained with the Tennessee Rythm of the A-League and played on the Tennessee Under 23 State Team. Last season, Glaser played in 15 games, starting 11 of them, including 10 of the Tigers' final 11 games of the season. Against Fordham in the Hartwick Tournament, Glaser scored a goal and assisted on the gamewinner by Steven Brooks. As a sophomore in 1998, Glaser scored two goals, both of them game-winners, and gave the Tigers a two-goal lead in their win at UNLV His assist on Taylor Stirling's goal in the second overtime period upset nationally-ranked Saint Louis and propelled the Tigers into the semifinals of the CUSA tournament. He played in all 20 matches of the 1998 season, and started 19 of them. As a freshman, Glaser was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team after scoring five goals and five assists in his inaugural campaign. He recorded an assist in his first college appearance and registered a fivepoint game versus Alabama A & M. Glaser prepped at Henderson High, where he lettered all four years and set the single-season goals record for the school. He was also selected to the allregion, all-area and all-state teams. He led his 1996 club team to the state championship, and he also lettered in basketball.

DAVID MEDLOCK SENIOR, D GERMANTOWN, TENN. (UMKC)
Medlock returns for his third season with the Tiger Soccer Team after transferring from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Last season, Medlock played in four matches, and started the final two matches of the season at defender. Medlock played in 14 matches in 1997, starting seven of them. He assisted on the first goal in a 2-1 victory over Louisville in his first season as a Tiger. While at UMKC, Medlock appeared in 13 matches, making two starts. The team was 9-11 overall and 6-2 in Mid-Continent Conference play. Prepped under coach Matt Lane at Germantown High School, where he recorded 16 goals and 14 assists in his career. He helped lead his team to district and regional championships in 1997. As a junior, Medlock earned alldistrict, all-metro, and all-state honors.

Schwaigert returns for his third season in a Tiger uniform. Last season, he was the backbone of the Tiger defense from his position as sweeper, and he was second on the team in goals scored, with six. All six of his scores came off of penalty kicks, including two against C-USA rival Charlotte in a 3-2 victory at home. He also scored two goals against Belmont University in a 3-0 win on the road. In the summer of 1999, Schwaigert was selected along with Tiger keeper Brian Covey to try out for the U.S. Under 23 National Team. He was a member of the South Regional Team that went 2-2 at the U.S. Amateur Soccer Association's Festival in Portland, Ore. In 1998, Schwaigert earned defensive MVP honors at the C-USA tournament and assisted on two goals in the Tiger semifinal victory over Marquette. He started 15 of the 16 games in which he played, and was a state Select Team member of the Under 23 Regional Championship Team. Shipman was one of three Tigers to start all 18 games in 1999, his first season as a Tiger. He was second on the Team in assists, with four, and had one goal on the season against Central Arkansas. Shipman was third on the team in shots, with 26, and he was always a threat from his position at center midfielder. Shipman also had two assists against Fordham in a 3-2 win. Shipman spent the 1998 season at Christian Brothers University, where he led the team in goals, with 10, and points, with 24. He was a first-team AllGulf South Conference selection. Shipman spent the 1996 season at the University of Connecticut, where he scored six goals and had four assists for 16 points on the season. White will be counted on to provide leadership in the Tigers' attack this season. He appeared in 16 games last season, starting 10 of them. He tallied two assists on the season and one goal, and was an emotional and physical leader on the field. He had one assist in the 3-2 win over Fordham in the Hartwick Invitational. In 1998, White had a goal and one assist in the semifinal victory over Marquette in the C-USA Tournament. White scored an assisted goal to break a 2-2 tie in a 3-2 win over DePaul. He also scored the game-winning goal for the second straight season to defeat Christian Brothers. In 1997, White appeared in 1 7 games, scoring three goals and adding two assists. In addition to his game-winner against CBU, White scored a second game-winner against Vanderbilt. Bevard made no appearances last season for the Tigers and redshirted in 1998. Bevard prepped at Park Hill High School where he was a three-year letterman and helped lead his team to the Suburban Big 8 Conference Championship. He earned alldistrict honors and had a six-point game against St. Joe Central. Bevard was also valedictorian of Park Hill and a member of the National Honor Society.
SEAN 14 ERASER JUNIOR, F EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA Last season, Fraser led the Tigers in goals scored and points. He scored two game-winners against Charlotte and Centenary, and against the latter scored a hat trick. He also led the team in shots taken, with 54. In 1998, Fraser had a three-point game against Western Kentucky, and assisted on the gamewinner against Louisville. Fraser prepped at Holy Tinity in Edmonton, where he had 14 goals in 18 games as a senior. He also played on the Canadian U20 national team in the CONCACAF qualifying round. YR. 4 STEPHEN LEWIS JUNIOR, D GERMANTOWN, TENN. Lewis, who will share the captain's responsibilities with Ryan Schwaigert this season, was one of three Tigers to start every game last season, and played his first two seasons with his older brother, Joey, as a teammate. Lewis was a defensive leader with Schwaigert in his sophomore campaign. As a freshman, Lewis played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. His first career point was a gamewinning assist against Belmont. He prepped at Houston H.S., where he lettered three years and helped lead his team to the 1996 state championship. He was Best of the Preps winner in 1998 and a finalist in 1997, and won alldistrict, all-metro, and all-state honors in 1997 and 1998. Lewis plays his club soccer for Memphis Futbol Club, which won the Region III and finished third in the National Tournament in Philadelphia this Summer. Played along side fellow Tiger Justin Stralka in the tournament. Lewis is also a member of the Tennessee Under-23 team which reached the Regional Semifinals this summer.

JUNIOR, MF EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA Matsuba battled a foot injury last season and only made five appearances for the Tigers in 1999, starting against Fordham and Oral Roberts. In 1998, he played in 16 games and made two starts. He prepped at Holy Trinity with Kirk Ricketts and Sean Fraser, played on five consecutive Alberta provincial teams, and was named his high school team's most valuable player. He was also selected to represent the U of M in the 1999 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference.

His team finished second in the Alberta Summer Games, and he led his high school team to the conference title his senior season.

JUSTIN 6 STRALKA JUNIOR, MF MEMPHIS, TENN. Stralka started all 16 matches in which he played last season. He scored the game winning goal in a 3-0 win over Oral Roberts and picked up an assist in a 4-3 extra time loss to DePaul. As a freshman, he recorded his first career point assisting the game-winning goal against Belmont, and got his first career start against Drury. He prepped at CBHS, where he started all four seasons at center midfield, and scored 18 goals and 14 assists on the way to a state runner up finish as a senior. TX. Brezovsky lettered in both football and soccer for the Colony H.S., and during his soccer career he scored 36 goals and had 49 assists. His club team, Longhorn Soccer Club, won the Texas state championships in May of 2000. Brezovsky was a four-year letterman in soccer, and scored 12 goals and 17 assists as a senior. "Dusty is the product of an excellent club system. He plays the left side of the field and is left-footed, giving us options that we did not have last season," says head coach Richie Grant. "We look for him to learn and improve greatly in his first year."

NELSON ENNIS
FRESHMAN, D/MF WISCONSIN DELLS, Wl Ennis played his high school ball at Verona Area H.S., where he was voted team captain both his junior and senior seasons. He was a four-year letterman and was elected first team all-conference his junior and senior seasons. With his club team, U.A. Waves, Ennis travelled to several blue-chip tournaments and camps, including the 1998 NCAA Final Four Weekend. He also was a two-year letterman in wrestling. "Nelson is another left-footed player that will give us depth on the left side," says Grant. "We expect him to develop while he contributes this season."
18 MICHAEL FLOYD FRESHMAN, MF GRANBURY, TX Floyd led his high school team in scoring his final three seasons there, and is Granbury High School's alltime leading scorer with 151 points. In 2000, Floyd was the fourth leading scorer in the Fort Worth Area, and was fristteam ail-district in 1998, 1999, and 2000. He led his team to the 1999 4A state championships, where he scored the winning goal. Floyd played with the Fort Worth Tejanos soccer club that placed second in the 1999 Florida Sun Bowl, and Michael was chosen as Team MVP in the 1999 Houston Showcase Tournament. "Michael is another lad from Texas, which is a great source of soccer talent. He is a great signee," says Grant. "He has excellent touch and great potential. He gives us options because he can be used as a winger and as relief with the forwards."

GRAHA GIBBS FRESHMAN, D DUBLIN, IRELAND Gibbs is a defensive center midfielder and defender who has played for the Swords Celtic Football Club and was a member of the Irish School's International Team. Gibbs is 19 years old and has the potential to be an excellent defensive contributer for the Tigers backfield. "Graham is one of our top recruits,"remarks Grant. "We needed strength at the back, and he will contribute straight away and make us a stronger team."
FRESHMAN, GK SAND SPRINGS, OKLAHOMA Isaacs prepped at Charles Page H.S., where he was a three-year letterman at keeper. He played for the Tulsa Soccer Club, whose record was 44-4-1 last season. His club team won the Oklahoma State Championships in 1997 and 2000. Isaacs was selected all-district and allconference as a junior and senior, and received all-state honors as a senior. In his senior season, Isaacs made over 100 saves, and held a career goals against average of 0.86. "This guy is all hustle," says Coach Grant. "Josh brings great spirit and tremendous dedication. He gives us depth at goalkeeper, and he is eager to learn. He is going to be an energy source that the team will feed off of."

FRESHMAN, MF CORDOVA, TENN. Paule teamed with fellow newcomer Clark Talley to lead Houston H.S. to its second consecutive NSCAA Number 1 National Ranking in 2000. Paule led the Mustangs midfield, and has been a Region III OOP team member for the last two years. He was selected allmetro, all-region, and a Best of the Preps finalist in 19981999, and the Mustangs were state champions in 1999 and 2000. Paule's older brother, Ross, plays in the MLS for the Colorado Rapids. "We are very excited about having Grant and delighted that he is staying home to play his college soccer," says CoachCrant. "He will certainly make us a better team. He can play outside and center midfield, and he has excellent touch. He will contribute this year and be a force in C-USA in years to come."
RAVIT FRESHMAN, D SHELBURNE, VT Ravit played his high school soccer at Champlain Valley Union H.S., where he was a two year-letterman in soccer and a three-year letterman in Lacrosse. He led his 1999 soccer team to the Vermont Division I Boys Championship and to an undefeated 17-0-1 season last year. He has also been a participant in the Vermont Olympic Development Program for the last four seasons, and his Nordic Soccer Club is the six-time Snickers Cup winner. "Josh brings nice diversity to the squad, coming from Vermont to play for us," says Grant. "He has the size to play at this level, and he has a strong right foot, which will help us in the back."

Schmidt, a Garland, Texas, native who prepped at Garland H.S., was a two sport standout who lettered in soccer for four years and football for three. He led his soccer team to a 22-2 record his senior seasonwhile only allowing six goals all year. He won all-district MVP and was selected to the all-area and all-region teams. He did not start playing goalkeeper until his senior season and led his team to the regional finals. "Joshua is a raw talent," says Grant. "He has good size and presence in the net. He gives us strength and depth at the position of goalkeeper."

Shumate prepped at Bartlett High under coach David Kiser, where he led them to the state quarterfinals in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He was selected to the Best of the Preps All-metro team in 1999. A four-year letterman, Shumate was selected to the All-district Tournament team in 1999 and All-district in 1998. He was a member of the Tennessee OOP team in 1998 that won the Sub-regional championship and participated in the regional camp that same year. "Corey is another product of MFC. He has wanted to play here since he was a kid, and that kind of loyalty will show on the field. He will have an opportunity to contribute this season."

CLARK 1 TALLEY
Talley is another local high school standout who is electing to stay home and play for the Tigers. Talley was goalkeeper for the two-time NSCAA National Champions Houston H.S. and was a three-year letterman there. His club team won the state championship in 1997, and he has been on the Tennessee State Select Team since 1994. Talley's older brother, Carey, currently plays in MLS for D.C. United. "Clark will compete for a starting job this season. He is very dedicated to getting and staying fit," says Grant. "If he keeps working, he has a chance to be a very good goalkeeper."
Manager JUSTIN BERNIL Justin Bernil is entering his third season as a Tiger student manager. He is a senior majoring in physical education. Bernil is a Haywood HS alum in Brownsville, Tennessee. He was a four-year letterman in soccer and has served as the head swim coach at Colonial Country Club. He has also assisted with the Cordova swim program. He is certified by the American Red Cross as a CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard instructor. He is the only son of Carlito and Shiela Bernil.
Thorstensen has spent the last two seasons as the offensive leader for Lambuth in the Mid South Conference. He scored 56 goals through his first two seasons there, and was a first team NAIA All-American selection as a sophomore. He was named the Mid South Conference Most Valuable Player both years at Lambuth. His first season at Lambuth was spent under current Tiger head coach Richie Grant, who recruited him to Lambuth from his hometown of Sandesfjord, Norway. "Lars brings two years of experience and his goal scoring record speaks for itself. He gives us a different kind of threat up front to go with the pure speed and quickness of Fraser and White," says Coach Grant. "He is both a good player and a winner."
In Memoriam: Tommy Smith Tommy Smith, a Tiger soccer alum and CBHS graduate who played for Memphis from 1992-1995, passed away in March of 2000 after battling a fatal illness. Tommy was an important member of the Tiger family and he is greatly missed. He currently shares the record for most games in a season, with 24, and was a member of the 1993 team that earned an appearance in the NCAA tournament. In honor of Tommy, the team's spirit award will now be named for him, and on the weekend of October 27-28, there will be an alumni versus alumni match played at Echles Field in his memory. The coaches and players hearts and thoughts are with Tommy's parents, Pat and Linda Smith.

THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR R.C.Johnson, who has worked for 28 years in athletic administration and served as athletic director at Temple University, was named the Director Athletic Director of Athletics at The Iowa, 1965 University of Memphis on December 29,1995. "Clearly, R.C. Johnson is one of the premier athletic directors in the country," said U of M President Dr. V Lane Rawlins. "We were seeking an individual with people skills, as well as a deep caring about student-athletes and their futures. "We searched long and hard for someone whom we felt had the talents to fit The University of Memphis and the Memphis community, someone who was well respected in NCAA circles. We checked every resource that was available and feel that we could not have found a more qualified individual with a better record." Johnson initiated the start of a capital campaign to add a new 8,000-sciuarefoot football and basketball office complex to the current Athletic Office Building, a new basketball practice facility and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex on Memphis' south campus. The eight million dollar campaign is the largest fund raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics and should oring the Tiger athletic facilities on-line with Conference USA sister institutions. During the spring of 1999, Johnson negotiated one of the richest radio broadcast package in Tiger athletic history with WMC-AM 79 in Memphis. The threeyear agreement calls for WMC to pay the University approximately $1.2 million for football and men's basketball rights. In his short tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director's Flonor Roll, the User Clubs Board of Directors and the athletic director's Ambassador's Club.. Ralph Faudree Interim President Oklahoma Baptist, 1961 Dr. Ralph Faudree, who has been the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at The UniversityofMemphissince 1995, has been named astheinterim president replacing Dr. V. Lane Rawlins. Rawlins leftThe U of M in May to becomethe presidentat Washington State University. In addition to maintaining his professorial activities of teaching, directing doctoral students and continuing a research program, Dr. Faudree has strived to strengthen his College's reputation in each of its focus areas: teaching, research and service. In those areas, he has concentrated on improvements in academic administration that include: aggressive recruitment of high-quality faculty; introduction of interdisciplinary programs; development and implementation of rigorous research standards; development of a comprehensive and demanding tenure and promotion methodology; administration of a meaningful chair and faculty evaluation process. He has also fostered a number of special initiatives including establishment of the School of Urban Affairsand Public Policy, the Interdisciplinary Studies CenterfconsistingofWomen's Studies, the Centerfor Research on Women, African/African-American Studies, International Studies and the Park Ranger Program), the Undergraduate Student Services Center and the Benjamin Hooks Institute. A strong believer in a quality education for student-athletes, Johns9n emphasized academic integrity and excellence during his time at Miami University At the time he departed for Temple, Miami University had 15 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA, 62 student-athletes with a 3.50 or better GPA and 191 student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or better. Before becoming athletic director at Miami University, Johnson was athletic director at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88. He was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974 to 1980. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant football coach at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Nbungstown State University during the 1967 and '68 seasons. Prior to joining the staff at Youngstovvn State, Johnson seived as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa for two years (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). A native of Ottawa, IL, Johnson has his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Iowa and a master's in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa. He is a member of the Football Issues Comniittee of the NCAA, the National Association of College Directors of Athletics, the Executive Committee of the Division IA Athletic Directors Association, the C-USA Representative on the Board of Directors of the AFCA, and he serves on the Finance, Nominating, Planning, Football Scheduling, and Expansion & Bowl Committees for Conference USA. As a part of his research effort, Dr. Faudree has seived as a Visiting Professor at the Netherlands' University of Twente, the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, the University of Paris, the University of Singapore and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. It is at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences that Dr. Faudree cemented his relationship with Paul Erdos, one of the 20th century s most prolific and respected mathematicians. Their collaboration led to more than 45 articles in graph theory. Since Dr. Erdos's death, Dr. Faudree has continued the work they began together, collaborating with mathematicians in both Hungary and the United States. He has also helped to perpetuate Dr. Erdos's work by co-sponsoring the Erdos lecture series at the University of Memphis. The Atoka, Ok., native is married to the former Patricia Newsom and the couple has two daughters.

University Facilities
The University of Memphis Tiger athletic family has many places to call home for intercollegiate athletics. In 1970, the University of Memphis Athletic Department officially opened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex located just south of the main campus. The complex serves as the home of the Tiger football, baseball, soccer and track teams and offers workout facilities for all U of M sports. Since that time, however, the facility has taken on a new name and is now called the Billy J. Murphy Complex. The complex was renamed in honor of former Memphis head football coach and athletic director Billy j. Murphy. The main buildingatMurphy Complex features a newly renovated 50-yard indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor prac-

tices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well-equipped training room, the football equipment room, the football locker room, sauna and steam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as locker rooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall and spring practices. The new Billy J. Murphy Weight Training facility opened in January of 1993 and is now in use by all University of Memphis student-athletes. The 10,500 squarefoot facility is one of the largest of its kind in the country and features the latest in strength training equipment. The weight room is equipped with 10 self-contained Olympic platforms and power racks, a plyometric/medidne ball area, a complete dumbbell line (up to 150 Ibs in two and a half pound increments) and a variety of hip
sleds, gl iite-ham stations and other suppemental pieces allowing athletes from all teams to perform an unlimited variety of exercises and movements. The modern facility is also equipped with dressing and restrooms. All of the University of Memphis' home baseball games are played at Nat Buring Stadium, a 1,200-seat facility adjacent to Murphy's main building. Recently, lights, new dugouts and a new enclosed press box were added, as well as new blue chair back seats. Nat Buring was the site of the 1993 Great Midwest Conference baseball tournament.
Great Midwest Conference Track and Field Championships. Other features of Murphy Complex include an Olympic indoor pool and golf driving range that is used by the Tiger golf teams. A 5,000 square-foot Novagrass artificial green was installed adjacent to the driving range in August of 1992. The green, which features four sand bunkers and a self-contained irrigation system, allows both men's and women's golf teams to practice their short games. Located next to the baseball stadium is Murphy Track, an eightlane, polyurethane tartan surface track used by the University of Memphis track teams for home meets. During the summer of 1991, the University of Memphis hosted the World Police and Fire Garhes. The track meet featured over 700 athletes from around the world. During the summer of 1992, U of M served as host of the Tennessee Sports Festival which featured athletes from around the state. Murphy Track was also the host site of the 1992 and 1993

Additionally, target greens for chipping and putting and a new irrigation system are also included. The 62,380-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is the site of all the University of Memphis home football games, as well as the Liberty Bowl postseason game. The stadium has also hosted numerous concerts. The Liberty Bowl, which was built at a cost of $3.7 million by the city, was inaugurated in 1965.

The stadium was renovated in 1987 at a cost of $19.5 million which included sky-suites, approximately 12,000 new seats, a new stadium club, new lighting system, new playing surface, new handicap seating area and numerous concession stands and restroom facilities for the new sections. In 1993, the stadium received a new artificial surface for the sidelines and a Jumbotron Scoreboard was added in 1999. The University of Memphis Tiger basketball team has played for the past nine seasons in The Pyramid, which seats 20,142. Highlighting its contents is one of the finest locker room facilities in all of basketball, including the NBA. This 2,200 square-foot room is equipped with a lounge and team meetingarea, dressing room, training room and storage area. It was the site of the 1993 Great Midwest Conference Men's and Women's basketball tournaments, the 2000 C-USA Men's Basketball Championship and the 2000 NCAA Women's Region Finals. The Pyramid has 3,000-seat Elma Roane Field House. Situated in the heart of U of M's campus, the Field House is equipped with locker room and training facilities for the five Lady Tiger athletic teams. The Field House received an $80,000 renovation in August of 1993. The gym itself was completely painted and entry ways were improved with lighting and a totally different design. In the summer of 1998, a new floor was put down with talks of an additional 1,000 seats being added in the near future. The men's and women's tennis teams host their opponents on the HPER courts. low the Tiger tennis teams to host multi-team tournaments. The courts were resurfaced in 2000. The newly constructed Larry 0. Finch Cneter opened in the spring of 2000 and serves as the practice facility for men's basketball. It has three full basketball courts, locker rooms, weightroom, media rooms, laundry facilities, training rooms and equipment rooms. The state-ofthe-art facility gives the Tigers one of the best practice facilities in the country. The men's and women's golf teams practice at numerous courses around Memphis. The
Lady Tigers practice regularly at Colonial Country Club, Germantown Country Club, Stonebridge Golf Club, Plantation Golf Club, Big Creek Golf Club, Olive Branch Country Club, Windyke Country Club, Memphis National Golf Club, Cordova Club and Wedgewood Golf Club. The men and women hosted the final Great Midwest Conference Golf Championships at Germantown Country Club in 1995. The U of M also played host to the NCAA Women's East Regional in 1996.

WHY TIGERS? When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team, tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, "We fight like Tigers". The nickname was born. More and more the nickname "Tigers" was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use "Normals" or the "Blue and Gray" when referring to the University. Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922, Normal's football team gave a ring of truth to that old student yell about Tigers. The team adopted a motto - "Every Man A Tiger" and went on to score 174 points while allowing their opponents just 29 points. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". The Tiger nickname would return. But not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis.
A BENGAL FOR A MASCOT For almost 30 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis athletics has been the Bengal Tiger. TOM II, the name of the current mascot, puts in personal appearances at all Tiger football games, as well as numerous basketball games. TOM II has also been seen at Tiger baseball, soccer and women's basketball games. The first tiger, purchased by the Highland Hundred (football booster group) in 1972, lived for 20 years and was housed at the Memphis Zoo. TOM died in February of 1992.
Tiger Traditions
The story of how the first Tiger cub arrived in Memphis is quite interesting. On November 9,1972, the baby tiger was placed in a dog kennel in Michigan City, IN, and flown to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. There it was placed aboard a Delta flight and arrived in Memphis at 3:00 AM. C. Cleveland Drennon, an attorney and president of the Highland Hundred, approved a check for S1,500 to buy the animal, and TOM was taken to athletic director Billy Murphy's office for a press conference. In ceremonies at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, the Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University on November 11, 1972. The zookeeper, at the suggestion of his daughter, called the little tiger, Shane. Once in Memphis, however, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries came in to a committee chaired by Judge Harry Pierotti. The list ran from Spook, Sampson, Goliath, Bengo, Sultan, Sahib, Big Cat, Ptah, Touchdown, Sonny, and Shiloh to Bengie Wougie Bengal Boy from Tennessee. Finally, the judges reduced the list to two: Shane and TOM, for Tigers of Memphis. TOM won. During his first few months in Memphis, Bill Proctor housed the tiger in his garage, which was redecorated by the Highland Hundred. TOM was guarded by Proctor's hound dog. TOM II came to the University of Memphis in the fall of 1992 and is housed at his new home at Nixon Farms in Collierville, Tenn. His new home is 3500 square feet and includes two pools, a waterfall, heated and air conditioned den box and has seperately, a complete medical facility for his care and upkeep. The young tiger is nearly 500 pounds and is expected to be as large or larger than his predecessor, TOM, who was once the largest Bengal Tiger in captivity at 550 pounds. There is even a birthday party for TOM II prior to each football season.

SCHOOL COLORS THE LOGO The University of Memphis' official school colors of Royal Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.
The University of Memphis' official logo has been redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis,Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping tiger coming out from behind the letters. The new logo is an "M" with a leaping tiger coming up over the center of the "M".

The primary purpose of the University of Memphis is to advance learning. Memphis is dedicated first to the traditional ideals of learning by focusing its attention and efforts upon the creation, transmission, and application of knowledge. Secondly, it is committed to goals that are utilitarian in (1) preparing students to serve in a variety of professions and occupations, and in (2) providing services to society for improving the quality of life and environment. Through instruction, research, and public service, the University offers a diversity of learning opportunities for the pursuit of knowledge and truth in an atmosphere of free inquiry and open discussion. A community of learning, the University exists to nurture students in achieving intellectual competence, maturity, and self development.
The Center for Athletic Academic Services, which has been nationally recognized for its efforts by USA Today, The College Football Association, Sports Illustrated, ABC World News Tonight and The Chronicle of Higher Education, is committed to assisting student athletes in earning a college degree. Over the past four years, Tiger student athletes have the highest graduation rate for any public Division I institution in Tennessee, Arkansas or Mississippi. The Center provides an atmosphere of personal attention and encouragement as well as tutorial assistance and academic support. The Center's services includes advice in all aspects of the student athlete's academic life-registration, study skills; degree planning; information regarding University programs, and policies and procedures. The Center also sponsors programs and workshops to enhance the personal development of the student athlete. Information regarding NCAA rules and compliance are made available to the student athlete and coaches by the Center. Additionally, the Center monitors the student athlete's progress toward his/her degree objective. The facility contains: two tutor rooms, each eight-person capacity; two computer labs, outfitted with eight PCs and seven Maclntoshs; three types of study area seating; 16 individually-lighted study carrels; four counselor offices; check-in area; kitchen area for staff and evening workers; director's suite with conference area, reception/secretary area and assistants' offices. The director of the center is Dr. Tim Sumner, and he is assisted by academic counselors Dot Hale (Men's Basketball, Women's Tennis, Track & Volleyball, and female trainers), Richard Jones (Rifle, Men's Track, Tennis & Soccer), Cathy Horton (Scholarship Football, Walkon Football & Football Managers) and Sandra Van Eck (Women's Basketball, Baseball, Women's Soccer & Golf, Men's Golf, and Male Trainers).

ORGANIZATION The University of Memphis is comprised of six undergraduate colleges, The Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, The Loewenberg School of Nursing and The Graduate School. The undergraduate colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, The Fogelman College of Business and Economics, The College of Communication and Fine Arts, The College of Education, The Herff College of Engineering, and The University College. The University
Eighty-eight years ago, The University of Memphis began as a small state teacher's college. Today, The U of M is a major center for learning and research. The University of Memphis' roots date back to 1912, when radio was young, motion pictures were silent and William Howard Taft was in the White House. Named West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution's main purpose was to train and educate secondary-school teachers. It became West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925. Answering the need for a comprehensive school in the Mid-South, WTSTC expanded its curriculum. In 1941, the school's name changed to Memphis State College and in 1957, the college received university status and became Memphis State University. On July 1,1994, the name was changed to The University of Memphis. The U of M now has some 20,000 students and a campus of 1,160 acres on four different sites. The main campus lies in the center of a sprawling metropolis and combines the con-venience of a large city with the atmosphere of a residential neighborhood. South Campus, which was once

Welcome to University of Memphis Soccer CREDENTIALS - Those members of the media traveling with the team to Echles Field will have no problem entering the premises. Those not traveling with the team need to contact Jason Black or Bryan Reyna in The University of Memphis Athletic Media Relations Office for press credentials. A pass list will be kept at the main gate area, which also serves as the media gate. Seating in the press area is limited and will be restricted to filing press, radio, and television representatives' needs according to NCAA regulations. PARKING - Media parking is located in the parking lot adjacent to the main gate. No parking pass is required to park in that parking lot. PHOTOGRAPHERS - Press and television photographers are requested to stay at least 10 feet away from the playing surface. A photo deck is located behind press row for teams wishing to shoot coaches video. STATISTICS - The U of M media relations office will provide game notes, statistics, rosters and media guides throughout the game to all members of the media. 2000 Lady Tiger Soccer: A Glimpse Into the Future With the loss of their head coach and twograduatingseniors, the 2000 season looks to be a year of rebuildingand alsoagiimpse into the nearfuturefor the University of Memphis Lady Tigers. Interim head coach Brooks Monaghan will be lookingfor his returning players to take on the task of starting a new era for the Lady Tiger soccer program in the new millenium. He has 12 letlerwinnerscoming back, nine of whom were starters. With tine addition of nine highly-touted incoming freshman, the 2000 Lady Tiger campaign appears to have a brightfuture. This year's squad features four seniors, all of whom are eagerto end their U of M careers on a high note. Nicole Bates-Earner, Michelle Meehan, Candice Spiniolas and Tori Winslett will all be key to the Lady Tigers success during their final season at Memphis. Bates-Earner, (pictu red-above) a native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, is the sweeper. She started 54 games the past three years, indudingall 18 matches last season, and she has scored three goals and assisted on three others, despite playing defense throughout the majority of her career. She was the anchor of the Lady Tiger defense last season and is also the vocal leader of the squad. Meehan, a forward and the lone Memphis native of this years senior class, notched herfirstcareerstrikeforthe Lady Tigers in 1998, duringa 6-0 rout of Louisville. She appeared in all 18gamesfor Memphis lastseason, and worked herself into the starting line-up 12 times. Lastseason, she recorded two goalsand an assist while taking 17 shots. Atthe beginning of this season, Meehan will have 5 7 games of Division I collegiate soccer experience, which will certainly help lead the Lady Tigers into a new era. Spiniolas, (pictured-right) a Cary, III., native and Valparaiso transfer, has been the Lady Tigers offensive weapon for tine past two years. Spiniolas, with her solid offensive skillsand awareness, isahard-workingforward and looks to add to her already impressive resume in 2000. In 1999 she enjoyed a solid junior season postingseven goals and grabbingtwoassistsfora team-high 16 points. She recorded two multi-goal efforts during 1999, strikingtwice in a 7-0 thrashing of Rhodes College and recordingthe Lady Tigers only hat-trick of the season when she scored three goals, indudingthe game-winner, in a4-0 win over SEC rival Mississippi State. In a 6-1 thumping of Belmont, she converted theonly penalty kickthatthe Lady Tigers were awarded all season. Spiniolas appeared in all 18 games like the rest of her senior classmates, while starting 16 times. Winslett, a Seabrook, Tex., native, started every match lastseason at forward. She is a solid all-around player who leads by example. During 1999, she tallied three goals and five assists, to finish with 11 points on the year Winslett has nowappeared in 50 gamesfor Memphis while rackingup nine goals and ten assists, as she enters her fourth year atthe U of M. The Lady Tiger offense bosts three seniors and will also feature sophomore forward BeccaAmrozowicz. Last year, over the course of the season itappearedthatSpiniolas and Amrozowicz were perhaps Memphis' most lethal combination. Both players were first and second, respectively in

goals and points in 1999. Thispairhopestocontinuecausingfitsforopposing teams with theiroffensive potency in 2000. Amrozowicz, a C-USAall-freshman team selection, made a name for herself in her debutseason,displayinggood speed and solid skills. She appeared in every game as a freshman and managed to get the starting nod 14 times in 1999. She was the second leading scorer with six goals and also second on the team with 12 points. The U ofM midfield will be led by junior Michelle Meduri and sophomore Alison Baker. Meduri does a great job of maintaining possession in the midfield and is always lookingto pass first She played in 17 games, starting 16 times in 1999. She finished lastseason with two assistsand two points. Baker made an immediate impact in the Lady Tiger midfield withherquickfeetandsofttouch. She saw action in all 18gamesand broke into the starting line-up 14 times in 1999. Baker finished fifth on the team in scoringwith fourgoalsand one assist, and ended up with nine pointsduringher fresh man campaign. Helping lead the Lady Tiger defense alongwith Bates-Earner is sophomore Molly Danaher. Danaher, a defender, was one of only three Lady Tigers (alongwith Bates-Earner and Winslett) to havestarted all 18 games lastyear. Known for her hard-nosed play she recorded an assist in 1999 and is lookingto help guide the Lady Tiger defense into the 2000 season. Monaghan will also be lookingto the newcomers, led by Jennifer Goff (Oak Ridge, Tn.), Kari Rawe (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and Katarina Wicksell (Halmstead, Sweden) for immediate impacts. Rawe and Wicksell will be tested early having been thrust into the disctinction of being the only goalkeepers for the Lady Tigers. Frances Currin, who is the career saves leaderfor Lady Tiger soccer with 326, graduated this past spring.
The Schedule The Lady Tigers will open up their season with a West Coast tour, featuringgamesatSacramento State and San Francisco in late August Duringthe month of September, they will host non-conference opponents Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee and Southeastern Louisiana, in addition to conference matches with DePaul and Marquette. On the road they will venture to Southwest Missouri State, followed by conference games at Charlotte, South Florida and Tulane.
The final stretch in October will consist of four home games, three of which feature conference battles with Southern Miss, Louisville and Cincinnati. The Lady Tigers will then travel to take on conference opponents UAB, Saint Louis and Houston as well as matches at SEC-rivals Mississippi State and Vanderbilt Their season will then conclude with a homecontestagainst crosstown rival Christian Brothers University

At Christian Brothers High School, he anchored a Purple Wave squad that won two Tennessee State championships. The goalkeeper received the highest accolade for a prep player when he was named a high school Ail-American after his 1991 season. He was also a two-time all-state performer for David Dietrich at CBHS. The upcoming season marks the first head coaching assignment of any kind for Monaghan and should prove to be an invaluable learning experience for himself and his players alike. Monaghan must now lead a program boasting only one winning season throughout its five-year existence, when in 1997, the Lady Tigers finished 11 10-1. Last season, after suffering key injuries and a lack of cohesiveness, Memphis finished 1999 with a record of 5-13-0.

"We live together and die together" What is your game philosophy and what playing style will your team display? Our job as coaches is to motivate these players and to make sure that when they step out on the field thatthey give 110 percent. I thinkyou are goingto see a more energized team this year. When they step out on the field they are goingto bust theirtails and once the entire team is working hard and giving everything they have, I think they will start to see this team become successful. We wanttomakeotherteamsadjustto our style. I think in the past our team was asked to do the opposite and make adjustments to our opponents style and I do not agree with that. I wantto find ourstyle and then make other teams adjust. What will be your primary focus during your first year as Head Coach?

What are the strengths and weaknesses from top to bottom? I thinkone of our major strengths this year will be tine incomingfreshman because they are goingto add a lot of depth to the team. As far as weaknesses, I don't really see any this year. In the beginning, they are going to see a drastic change with the coaching staff and if there was a weakness thatwould be it because they are goingto have to adapt. However, asl mentioned before, the players are all excited about the change and I think it's goingto be a smooth transition. I feel thatthe players are all looking atthis as a great opportunity because it's a new start. The program hasn't been that successful in the past and they're looking atthis as a great opportunity to begin with a clean sheet Which players will you be counting on to lead this year's squad? I don't like think to that we our counting on one or two specific players, Hike to think that we are countingon the whole team and as long as the whole team steps up, then I have no worries. I thinkourteam will definitely be successful. Obviously we want leadership from our upperdassman because the effort that they give and display will rub off on the younger players. As a whole, once the entire team steps up and we all feel like we're on the same page, there isn't any doubt in my mind that we can become successful.
What type of player will you try to recruit into your program? Obviously we wantto bring in the best players possible, but we also wantto make sure thatthey fit in with the rest of the team. I want a player that has good leadership qualities and isn'tsomeone who will come in and cause problems amongst the team, yet can still be social with the team, as well. When a team is close off the field, they are usually close on the field. What would you like your players to take with them from your program? I would like my players to not only get better but to also gain a valuable learning experience and leave here knowingthatthey gave 110 percent and not to look back and wonder, what if?
Of the incomingfreshman this year, who do you think will make the biggest impact and why? Idon'twant to single out any specific player, really. I knowthatweare definitely counting on ourgoalkeeper coming in from Sweden, she definitely hasa lot of experience plus the factthatsheisn'tthe typical freshman. She happenstobe21 years old and has some professional experience abroad, so we hope she will bring in some leadership to the program. I alsothinkthat theentire incomingfreshman class will have a huge impact because they make up almost half the team this year. If they decide to step up, that's goingto push the others and make for a more competitive environment and that's what we want What will be the biggest obstacle to overcome this year?
What type of team motto will you enforce? Our team motto would have to be that as a team, we live together and die together. Idefinitelydon'twantanyfingerpointing;Iwantthemtoknowthat our success comes asateam. We have to work as a team in orderto be successful. How do you see this year's squad performing? I have a lot of confidence and I thinkthe team hasa lot of confidence. There has been a change amongthe coaching staff but change is often very good. Justin talking with the team, they all sound excited and they've been working hard this summer. Ifwecan get everyone on the same page, Ithinkwecan be very successful.

I thinkthe biggest obstacle will betoforget about the past. I thinkthat everyone is willingto throw last year away because the team wasn't successful and everyone is ready for a new start If we can getthe team to trustthe newcoachingstaff and forget about the pastthen I don'tseeany obstacles standing in our way, this season. If you could have one lasting impression on this program, what would it be and why? I would like my atheletes to know that I gave everything I had to make this program better. I would wantthe girls to leave here knowingthatthey not only grew as players but also as people.

Browne was a member of the 1993 Tiger team that made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Browne was also named to the First Team all-South Academic Team in 1994. Upon graduating from Memphis with a degree in environmental science, Browne went on to play three seasons with the New Orleans Rivberboat Gamblers of the A League. He then went to the Irish Premier League to play one season with the Sligo Rovers. Since 1997, Browne has been an assistant coach with the Christian Brothers University women's soccer program. A native of Birmingham, England, Browne has attained his Irish National B Coaching License, and has served as the director of coaching for the Rangers Soccer Club in Memphis. Clint's parents, Martin and Janie Browne, still reside in Birmingham, England.
Jodi Fisher is entering her first season as a graduate assistant coach with the Lady Tigers soccer team after playing for the Tigers in its first four seasons of existence. Fisher was a forward on the Lady Tigers' 1995-1998 squads, and she played in 79 matches over those seasons. She finished as the Lady Tigers' all-time leading goal scorer, with 33, and points scorer, with 92. As a player, Fisher made the C-USA All-Freshman team in 1995 and third-team All-Conference USA in 1997. She was a two-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week, once as a freshman and once as a senior. A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, Fisher graduated from Memphis in 1999 and is currently pursuing a masters degree in student personnel services.

Stephen Fuller is entering his third season as the Lady Tigers manager. Fuller, a Collierville resident, is a graduate student at the University. He has playing and coaching experience and is a native of Brandon, Mississippi.
Meredith begins her first season as a manager after playing the last four seasons with the Lady Tigers. Meredith was a forward from 1996-1999 and scoredl 8 goals and 11 assists to total 47 points in her career.

Her physical play and vocal leadership on the field will be vital for the Lady Tigers to be successfull in 2000. She played and started every match during her junior season and recorded a goal during a 2-1 loss at DePaul while finishing with two points. In 1998, she started 14 games. Her lone assist tied the match with Ole Miss which ended in a 2-2 tie. In 1997, she started all 22 games and ranked sixth on the team in scoring. Her first career goal came in a 4-2 win over Belmont, she also scored against Arkansas. She had a two-assist game against Saint Louis, including one in overtime. During her prep career she played for coach B.J. Taylor at Woodlands High School and was a member of the British Columbia All-Star team. She earned MVP CAREER STATS honors for her school team YR 99 98 97 TOT and led her B.C. Provincial GP 18 14 22 team to the championship. Meehan looks to be a key factor in the Lady Tiger offense this fall. Whether attacking from the midfield or forward spot, she is looking to pace the U of M attack with her solid play. She played in all 18 games last season, starting 12 times. She recorded a two-goal, one-assist effort in a 9-0 thumping of Rhodes College and finished with five points on the season. In 1998, she got her first career goal in a 6-0 shutout of Louisville and also added an assist in that victory. She played in all 18 matches and started consecutive games against Oklahoma, UT-Martin and Southern Miss. In 1997, she played in 21 games as a freshman and recorded her first career point against Cincinnati. She finished the season tied for sixth among Conference USA leaders with three league assists. Amrozowicz emerged as a dangerous striker in her freshman campaign, finishing second on the team with six goals, good for 12 points. She had the game winner in a 2-1 overtime win against Toledo in the Lady Tiger Invitational and also scored the final goal during a 4-0 win over SEC foe Mississippi State on the road. She had the initial strike in a 2-1 road victory over C-USA opponent Louisville, the lone conference road victory of the season and was selected to the Conference USA all-freshman team. Amrozowicz prepped at Holy Name HS and holds the school record for career goals and assists with, 63 and 55, respectively. She was named first-team all-Greater Cleveland, all-Cuyahoga County by the Plain Dealer and to the all-Sun team as both a junior and senior and was a third-team all-Ohio selection during her senior year.

Baker demonstrated flashes of greatness last season, with her excellent ball skills and game awareness. She was the heart of the midfield last year, scoring four goals and recording an assist, for nine points in her first season at the U of M. She scored a goal in a 2-1 loss to South Florida and had two more in a 6-1 demolition at Belmont. She also found the net during a 3-1 loss to Houston. Baker played for the Alberta Select Team and Foothills Soccer Club while her high school (Henry Wise) did not sponsor a team. She was the team captain for the Alberta Select team that claimed the gold medal at the 1999 All Star Championship in Granby, Quebec, and was also a Gold Medalist at the 1995 Alberta Summer Games. She was on city championship teams in both track and field hockey for Henry Wise HS and was the MVP of the city field hocky league.

SOPHOMORE, D MILWAUKEE, WIS. Danaher wasted little time making a name for herself during her freshman season. She demonstrated a physical style and also exhibited a keen sense of awareness on the defensive end of play. She anchored the right side of the Lady Tiger defense last season while playing and starting every match as a freshman. She recorded her only point of the season, an assist, during a 9-0 romp over Rhodes College. Danaher was named her prep team's most valuable defensive player at Divine Savior Holy Angels HS and was a first-team allconference pick as well as second-team all-area as a senior, with her team advancing to the state semi-finals that same year. She had a combined five assists over her junior and senior seasons and was selected second-team all-conference as a junior. Her junior season, she led her prep squad to a 24-0 record, where they were ranked as high as 1 5th nationally. She played on the Wisconsin Olympic Developmental team during the summer of 1999.

JUNIOR, MF GERMANTOWN, TENN. Meduri has become a vital part of the Lady Tiger midfield throughout her first two years at the U of M and will most likely continue to lead the midfield again in 2000. Last season she saw action in 17 matches, breaking into the starting line-up 16 times. She recorded two assists during a 6-1 blow-out of Belmont to finish with two points on the year. In 1998, she played in all 18 matches as a freshman, starting 15 times. She picked up two assists in a 9-0 shutout over UT-Martin and recorded her first career goal against Cincinnati. Meduri prepped locally at Germantown HS and scored 31 career goals, good for 85 points while serving as co-captain of her GHS squad. She played for the Tennessee ODP squad from 1993-96 and was twice selected to the Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps all-metro team. She was an all-state selection as a senior and was a member of the 1994 state championship squad. She was also voted best midfielder and female athlete at Germantown HS.

Thiele saw considerable action last year, helping lead the Lady Tiger defense along with Bates-Earner. She played in 1 7 games and started 12 of them while taking eight shots on the year. In 1998, she played in all 18 matches and started nine times. Her first career assist came in a 9-0 shutout over UT-Martin. During her prep career at Holy Trinity HS, Thiele was the team captain and also voted the team's MVP as both a junior and a senior. She was also named Holy Trinity HS most outstanding senior athlete after helping lead her team to the city championship that same year. She played club soccer for the Warriors, leading them to the Provincial Finals three consecutive years. That same team finished first at the Alberta summer games in 1993. She also captained her basketball and volleyball squads.

Williams is easily the most aggressive player on the Lady Tiger roster with her above-average speed and a determination to win every ball. Unfortunately for Memphis, she suffered a stressfracture midway through the season and missed eight games. She did manage to play in 10 games,starting six of them while posting eight shots. In 1998, she started the team's final 11 games as a true freshman and scored three goals and had one assist. Her first career point came on an assist for the game-winning goal against Rhodes College, Memphis' first win that season. She struck for her first career goal during the next game, a win over Chattanooga and also had the U of M's last goal of the season during a 2-1 loss to UAB. Williams prepped locally at Briarcrest HS, and recorded 41 goals and 99 points during her career. She was named to the Commercial Appeal's Best of the Preps all-metro team all four years and was a two-time all-district and all-tournament honoree. Bronars spent her last two seasons playing for Collierville HS and also the Memphis Futbol Club. She captained the CHS squad that captured theTSSAA state championship in 1998 and was also selected the team MVP During that same year, she was tabbed to the all-conference and all-region team. While playing for MFC, she led her team to the Memphis Invitational Tournament title in 1997 and also the Germantown Invitational crown in 1998. Originally from North Carolina, Bronars was a two-year varsity letterman, leading her Habelock HS squad to the North Carolina State Games quarter-finals in 1998 and was also named to the NC State Games Regional team. In 1997, she was named all-conference and nelped lead her HS team to the quaterfinals, once again. In 1994, her club team claimed the North Carolina state championship. She was a member of the Tennessee Olympic Development team in 1998 and graduated from CHS with a 3.9 GPA. She will attend the U of M on a full academic scholarship and plans to study sports medicine.
Gjertsen prepped at St. Thomas Aquinas HS but did most of her damage playing for the U-1 7 Southwest United club along with fellow Lady Tiger signee, Kari Rawe. That club won the Cold Medal at the USA Cup where they posted an 8-0 record, scoring 46 goals, with Cjertsen accounting for half of the load with 23. She was a member of the Zone 5 Regional Team in '1995 that went on to the Alberta Summer Games. She was also selected to the Premier Division all-star team and was voted the all-star tournament MVP She lettered four years in basketball and participated in track and field from seventh until 11th grade, where she won Provincial Gold Medals for the javelin and long jump. She was also named female athlete of the year for basketball and track in 1998-99 and was selected as the top female athlete for St. Thomas Aquinas, as a junior.

FRESHMAN, F OAK RIDGE, TENN. Goff attended Oak Ridge HS and enjoyed an illustrious prep career, scoring 92 goals and chalking up 32 assists in 84 matches for a total of 216 points, making her the the all-time leading scorer in ORHS history. She was on the varsity all four years and was team captain during her junior and senior seasons. During her senior year, she was the team's leading scorer with 32 goals and 12 assists, good for 76 points. She also led the team in scoring her junior season, establishing a season-scoring record of 37 goals and also tallying five goals in a single-game, another school record. She was voted all-district and all-region all four years and was named TACA all-state her final three years and NSCAA all-south during her junior and senior seasons. She was selected for the Tennessee Olympic Development Program state team in 1995 and 1996 and was selected to the Region 3 camp in 1996.

Nielsen hails from Horsens, Denmark and played for the second-division Horsens SIK club under coach Nicholai Madsen, helping them secure a fourth-place finish in 1999. Prior to last season, her club also secured a Denmark and Juliant championship in both indoor and outdoor play. Nielsen benefitted from having both parents and an older sister as former players and has since volunteered her time, coaching two different youth teams. She lists handball and tennis as other athletic interests and also spent time in the theater while in high school.

She played for the Demolition '81 club, out of Houston, Tex. along with another Memphis signee, R.B. Sparrow, helping them reach the state tournaments in 1998 and 1999. She helped lead the same squad to a second-place finish at the Orange Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. during the fall of 1999. While at A&M Consolidated, she lettered three years in cross-country and was a regional qualifier her sophomore year. She also lettered twice in softball and received the Wayne Smith Award her senior year which is given to the athlete who demonstrates heart, courage and endurance.

FRESHMAN, D SUGAR LAND, TEXAS Sparrow prepped at Dulles HS and was four-year starter, leading the team in socring her freshman, junior and senior years, missing the majority of her sophomore season due to injury. She was voted all-district her freshman and junior years, as well as being selected to the South Texas OOP team and participating in the Region 3 camp. She played for the'81 Demolition and has been teammates with Roni Ruiz for the last two years. Sparrow however, has been a member of the Demolition since age 10 and has been instrumental in leading the club to over 200 wins and 14 tournament titles. The'81 Demolition has three South Texas State Championships and has been a State Cup finalist all but one year. To date, Sparrow has participated in three WAGS, tow Surf Cups and three Orange Classics, all with the Demolition.

JESSI TRAUTMAN FRESHMAN, D GERMANTOWN, TENN. Trautman has been a key member of the Fury Soccer Club for several years, helping them dominate the club ranks in the state of Tennessee. She led them to seven consecutive Tennessee Div. 1 State crowns and six-straight Southern Regional appearances, since 1994. She served as the team captain from 19961999, helping the Fury capture the Larnbuth University 7-a-side tournament in 1998. Trautman was also a three-year starter for Cermantown HS, after electing to forego her senior season and instead play for the Fury. While at CHS, she was the team captain in 1998 and led them to a district championship in 1996. In 1996, she was selected to the all-metro team and was named the Best Defensive Player. She was selected to Who's Who in Sports both in 1996 and 1997 and was a member of the Tennessee Olympic Developmental team from 1994-1997.

FRESHMAN, GK HALMSTEAD, SWEDEN Wicksell debuted for the Swedish Under-18 National Team in 1997, leading them to a third place finish at the Under18 European Tournament in 1998. She presently plays in the top women's league in Sweden where she is the starting keeper for her squad which was in sixth place out of twelve teams. It is her team's first season in the premiership. She is 21 years old.

1999 Season Review The 1999 season was a difficult one, as the Lady Tigers were plagued with key injuries and a lack of consistent play. A few bright spots managed to shine through however, with the emergence of new leadership on the field and the vital play of depart!ng seniors Frances Currin and Meredith Smith. Currin leaves the U of M as the career saves leader with 326. This past season, she also set the single-season record for saves and goals-against-average with 96 and 1.73, respectively. She posted two shutouts last season, the first coming in a 9-0 romp over Rhodes College to begin the year and later in the season when she blanked the Bulldogs of Mississippi State on the road, 4-0. was the last remaining member from the original squad when Lady Tiger soccer debuted in 1995. Smith finished her four-year career at Memphis with 77 appearances. She tallied 18 goals and 11 assists, giving her 47 career points. During the seasonopener against Rhodes College, she recorded two strikes and two assists in a win and later added two more goals during a 6-1 thrashing at Belmont. The season started off with a bang, as the Lady Tigers began with a record of 2-0. In the opener against crosstown-rival Rhodes College, Memphis rallied for a 9-0 victory with six different players scoring at least once. pered the Memphis attack. The Lady Tigers then endured a four-game losing streak which would finally cease in late September when the U of M grabbed a road-win over SEC opponent Mississippi State. That contest featured a "hat-trick" by junior striker Candice Spiniolas who scored the first three goals before freshman phenom Amrozowicz added the last strike in the 4-0 victory. Memphis didn't savor victory again until nearly one month later when they knocked off Belmont, 6-1, in Nashville. Smith, Spiniolas, and Winslett each scored for the U of M, as did freshman midfielder Alison Baker who found the net twice in the win. The Lady Tigers then suffered three straight C-USA losses but managed to grab
career goal in the 49th minute off a feed from Smith. Two clays later in the first match of the Lady Tiger Invitational, Memphis was victorious again with a 2-1 overtime win over Toledo. During what may have been the most exciting game all year, junior forward Tori Winslett equalized with a goal in the waning seconds of regulation play to send the game into extra time. It was just over 10 minutes later when Amrozowicz struck for the second time in three days off a corner kick from Winslett, this time for the game winner as the Lady Tigers season looked to be a good one early on. The following weeks, however, were not kind to the Lady Tigers, as injuries to freshman Erin Rothrock (pre-season injury) and sophomore Suzanne Williams hama win when they knocked off Louisville on the road 2-1 for their lone conference victory of the season. Spiniolas and Amrozowicz scored both times for Memphis, each time unassisted. Memphis ended their season with a hard-fought 2-0 loss on the road to conference opponent DAB The U of M did have one player recognized for post-season honors, however, as Amrozowicz was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team. Amrozowicz and her fellow Lady Tiger freshman definitely left their mark,as they accounted for 22 points (10 goals, two assists). Memphis finished 1999 battered, yet optimistic about next season. Only time will tell....

"Hie formation of Conference USA was considered by many in the world of intercollegiate spoils a bold move. During a significant period of major conference realignment and proposed restructuring of the NCAA,a brand new league made its debut,ready to make its own mark on intercollegiate athletics, four years later,Conference USA has accomplished what few other Division I-A leagues have in that amount of time. Capitalizing on the strengths of its 14 distinguished and diverse tiniversities,the league has built a strong foundation. Conference USA has emerged a league of its own. The millennium brings a new look to the league as South Florida will become a football member in 2003,and East Carolina and TCU will join the league in all sports beginning in 200102. C-USA member institutions span 13 states across the United States,more than any other Division I-A conference and are located in 13 major television markets. Conference USA is one of seven equity conferences that has direct representation in the NCAA governance structure. The conference enjoys prominent national television exposure,NCAA automatic qualifications and major bowl tie-ins. Conference USA is also committed to academic excellence. Success On and Off the Playing Field Over the past five seasons,Conference USA performers have achieved success in competition,placing the league among the top conferences in the nation. The league has been rated among the top eight in men's basketball,sending 32 teams to postseason play In addition,20 women's basketball teams,K) volleyball teanis,nine baseball teams and 12 soccer teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids. Nine football teams have earned bowl bids,induding Southern Miss which finished last season nationally-ranked for the second time in three years. CUSA football has rated among the top seven conferences in four seasons on the gridiron. Conference USA lias also sent two men's soccer teams to the final Fouc Overall,Conference USA teams iiave made 128 NCAA appearances. Conference USA student-athletes are diampions off the playing field as well. In four years,32 student-athletes earned national GTE Academic All-America honors,while 65 were named All-District. In addition,more than 4,000 student-athletes have been named to tiie Commissionei''s Honor Roll orreceivedthe Comiiiissionei/s Academic Medal,indicative of outstanding achievement in the dassroom.Tlie conference annually awaids six postgraduate scholarships,along with the Sport Academic Award,Scholar Athletes ofthelfear and the Institutional Academic ExcellaiceAward. A Short, but Proud History The conference unveiled its name,logo and commissioner on April 24,1995 in Chicago. Mike Slive was named the first commissioner of Conference USA Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in I995,while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. Conference USA added East Carolina {Septembei;1996] and the United States Military Acadany (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997;Amiy in 1998 and UAB in 1999. TCU will begin league play in 2001 and USF in 2003. Conference USA sponsors 18 spoils - baseball,basketball,cioss countrxfootball,golf,soccei;tennis,and track and field (indoor and outdoor) for men and basketbali,cross countrygolf, soccei;softbali,tennis,track and field (indoor and outdoor),and volleyball for women. The league's championship competition is enhanced by NCAA automatic bids to the C-USA tournament champion in volleyball,men's and women's basketball,men's and women's soccei;men's and women's tennis and baseball. Mai's and women's basketball and volleyball compete in two divisions. Qndnnati,DePaul,Louiwille,Maiquette,UNC Chadotte and Saint Louis comprise theAmerican Division,while UAB, Houston,Memphis,South Florida,Southern Miss andTulane make up the National Division. All other sports compete in a single division. C-USA on the Gridiron Conference USA began football competition in 1996. After four seasons,the league lias rated among the top seven Division I-A conferences in the nation. Conference USA is a member conference of the Bowl Championship Series. This includes guaranteed access for the C-USA champion if that teamreceivesa consensus ranking of six or highei: Confaaice USA sends its legular season champion to the AXA Liberty Bowl in Memphis,Tenn.,a second selection to the new Mobile Alabama Bowl and a thind team to the brand new GalleryFurniaire.com Bowl in Houstonjexas. The league lias a football television contract with Fox Spoits Net,which includes a conference game of the week,along with appearances on ESPN,ESPN2,ABC and CBS. C-USA on the Court Conference USA has consistently rated as one of the top basketball leagues in the country In its first five seasons,GUSA men's basketball has produced 33 postseason teams (19 NCAA and 14 NIT),including two teams that reached the final eight of the NCAA Tournament and one that advanced to the final four of the NIT. The conference also enjoys a significant participation by its fans,demonstrated by its recoirl high attendance in !998-99,drawing more than 1.6 million fans and placing the league fourth in the nation in attendance. The conference just completed the fifth year of a six-year basketball television agreement with ESPN Regional Television (formerly Creative Spoits) and ESPN Inc. Conference USA women's sports have also enjoyed success the past five seasons. In women's basketball,three C-USA schoolsreceivedNCAA Tournament bids in 2000,induding UAB, which advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.Tlie league lias produced 20 NCAA bids in its first five campaigns,a[ong with five WNIT appearances. In volleyball,the league has earned 10 NCAA bids,with Louisville reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 1996 and 1998. C-USA Across the Board Other C-USA accomplishments during the league's first five seasons include K) NCAA men's soccer appearances,with two teams reaching the NCAA final Four - Saint Louis in 1997 and UNC Qiariotte's 1996 team becoming die first C-USA sdiool to reach an NCAA final fourjtwo teams in the NCAA women's soccer toumamait,nine teams in the NCAA Baseball Championship and several NCAA individual and team competitors in golf tennis and track and field. The Presidents of the member institutions serve as Conference USAs Boarrl of Directors. Dr. Joseph Steger of Cincinnati serves as the chair, while Dr.J.H.Wxxlwaid of UNC Charlotte is the vice chair. Other members of the Board's Executive Committee are Rev Lawrence Biondi of Saint Louis,Horace Fleming of Southern Miss and Dt: Richard Eakin of East Carolina.
