IT’S AN NCAA RING THING • Both head coaches in Thursday’s MemphisSMU match-up have NCAA title rings. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner won his NCAA title as a player on the 1996-97 Arizona squad. Arizona defeated Rick Pitino’s Kentucky team for the championship. • In the 1987-88 season, SMU head coach Larry Brown guided Kansas to the NCAA title with Danny Manning leading the way.

Year/Date Site 2013-14/Mar. 8 Memphis, Tenn. 2013-14/Feb. 1 Dallas, Texas 2012-13/Feb. 6 Dallas, Texas 1987-88/Dec. 28 New York, N.Y. 1985-86/Jan. 4 Memphis, Tenn. 1984-85/Feb. 9 Lawrence, Kan.

PASTNER VS. HALL OF FAMERS • For the ninth time in his young head coaching career, Josh Pastner is facing a Hall of Fame coach in SMU’s Larry Brown. • Pastner is 4-4 in his previous eight match-ups. • Last season, Pastner was 3-1 against the Hall of Famers, going 2-0 versus Louisville’s Rick Pitino and 1-1 versus Brown. • The first time Pastner faced a Hall of Fame head coach came in his first season in 2009-10. • That season, Pastner’s Tigers dropped a 7457 decision to Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim and Syracuse.

PASTNER VERSUS CAROLINA COACHING TREE • Although he hasn’t faced North Carolina on the court (he’s tried to set up a home-and-home series), Tigers head coach Josh Pastner has faced five head coaches — current and former — with North Carolina ties in his tenure. • On Thursday, Pastner faces Mustangs mentor Larry Brown, who played at North Carolina from 1960-63. • Pastner has a 14-5 record (.737 winning percentage) in these match-ups, and the following breaks it down:

BROWN NOT NEW TO FACING TIGERS • Prior to his arrival at SMU in 2012-13, Larry Brown was a familiar face to Tigers fans. • Before the 2012-13 encounter that Memphis won 60-52, Brown coached against Memphis three times in the 1980s and was 2-1 versus the Tigers. • Five of the previous six Brown-versus-Memphis encounters were single-digit outcomes, and the following shows that:

TIGERS, BEWARE THE MOOD(Y)! • Don’t think the 2014-15 Tigers need a reminder of how tough it can be to play in Moody Coliseum after their last four visits, three of which ended in losses — 70-60 in 2009-10, 64-58 in 2010-11 and 87-72 in 2013-14. • In 2012-13, Memphis pulled out a tough 6052 victory in Moody Coliseum. The Tigers only led 22-17 at the break. Memphis extended the lead to 34-22 before a 12-2 SMU run pulled the

Mustangs to within two at 36-34. Two Geron Johnson treys and clutch free throw shooting in the final two minutes (12-of-16 in last 1:38) helped Memphis secure the win. Prior to the two setbacks in 2009-10 and 201011, Memphis had some close calls versus SMU in Moody Coliseum. In the 2009 contest, Memphis led 34-29 at the break, but the Mustangs opened the second half with a 12-5 run to take a 41-39 lead at the 13:43 mark. The Tigers regrouped and went on a 15-2 spurt over the next seven minutes to take a 54-43 lead and never looked back. In the 2007-08 meeting in Dallas, Memphis had to fend off several Mustangs charges before pulling away late for the 72-55 victory. In 2006-07, the Tigers entered the game with a perfect 15-0 league record, but had to scrap and claw their way to a 64-61 win to preserve its first perfect conference season.

SHOOTING WOES IN THE MOODY • One reason the Tigers have had a tough time at Moody Coliseum is they don’t shoot well on the Mustangs’ homecourt. • In the last seven visits to Moody Coliseum, Memphis shot a combined 40.9 percent (159389) from the floor and 31.8 percent (48-151) from the arc. • The Tigers shot under 40 percent from the field in three of their previous seven visits. Memphis hit 35 percent or less from the arc four times. • In its 2013 visit, Memphis shot a regular-season low 29.8 percent from the floor.

• The Tigers’ lowest field goal percentage of 2012-13 came in the NCAA Tournament third round against Michigan State (29.7 percent). FOLLOWING A LOSS UNDER PASTNER • The Tigers dropped a 74-66 decision to Tulane Jan. 3. • However, Memphis has proven to be quite resilient after a loss in the Josh Pastner era. • The Tigers have a 43-4 record (.915 winning percentage) after a loss under Pastner. • The last time Memphis suffered back-to-back losses under Pastner was near the start of the 2012-13 campaign — 80 games ago. • The Tigers dropped consecutive decisions to VCU 78-65 Nov. 22, 2012, and Minnesota 84-75 Nov. 23, 2012, at the 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas. WHAT THE TIGERS ARE LOOKING TO AVOID ... • First, Memphis is looking to avoid back-to-back losses since the start of the 2012-13 season. • The last time the Tigers dropped consecutive games was in the 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis, where they fell to VCU and Minnesota — a stretch of 80 games. • Next, the Tigers are attempting to avoid backto-back conference losses since near the end of the 2010-11 regular season —a stretch of 124 games. • The last time Memphis dropped consecutive conference games was at UTEP 74-47 Feb. 26, 2011, and at East Carolina 68-57 Mar. 2, 2011. • Finally, Memphis is looking to avoid its first below .500 record in conference play since the start of the 2003-04 league season — a stretch of 365 total games and 174 conference contests. • In January of 2004, the Tigers started Conference USA play with a 0-2 record after road losses at Southern Miss 66-63 Jan. 10, 2004, and at DePaul 82-73 Jan. 13, 2004. TIGERS VISIT STREAK-KILLING MOODY • Although they don’t bring one into Moody Coliseum this time, the Tigers had two previous road win streaks come to an end on the Mustangs’ homecourt. • Last season, Memphis had a 16-game regularseason road win streak and a 19-game overall win streak away from FedExForum (includes postseason tournament) in conference play when it visited Moody Coliseum Feb. 1, 2014. (NOTE: This conference win streak began in Conference USA and continued into the American Athletic Conference) • Both streaks came to an end with SMU’s 87-72 victory over the Tigers. • However, that wasn’t the first road win streak the Mustangs ended for the Tigers. • In the 2009-10 season, Memphis brought a 27game road win streak to Moody Coliseum Jan. 30, 2010.

LEARNING TO SHARE • With the Tigers having nine first-year players in 2014-15, the team is slowly trying to learn what has become a signature of Josh Pastner squads — sharing the ball. • And Memphis has seen the results of lessons learned from sharing the ball in recent games. • In the last eight contests from Dec. 6-Jan. 3, the Tigers averaged 16.3 assists per game. In its first five games, Memphis averaged only 10.0 assists per contest. • The Tigers also have moved up nearly 190 spots in the NCAA rankings for assists per game the past eight contests. • Entering the Dec. 6 Bradley game, Memphis ranked No. 298 in the nation in assists per game. Now, the Tigers are ranked No. 110 in assists per contest. • In recent seasons, Memphis has been one of the top teams in assists per game, and the following shows that (along with this year’s current rank): Season Asst/Game 2014-15 13.8 2013-14 17.4 2012-13 16.8 2011-12 14.5 2010-11 14.6 2009-10 13.8 * through 13 games

HIGH DISHIN’ EQUALS MADE SHOTS • One of the main reasons Memphis head coach Josh Pastner loves high assists numbers: it leads to easier shots and more field goals made. • In each of his previous five seasons, Pastner’s squads have assisted on over 50 percent of the team’s field goals made, and the following shows that (also lists this season’s numbers after 13 games):

CRASHING THE BOARDS • The Tigers’ focus in the off-season was on the defensive end, and one area of defense the team worked on was the glass — especially ending opponents’ possessions after one shot. • Memphis has shown what it learned in the early portion of 2014-15. • The Tigers leads the American Athletic Conference in rebound margin at +7.6. • Memphis leads the league in rebounding with a 40.1 average. • The Tigers also lead the conference in defensive rebounds (26.7) and are second in the league in offensive rebounds (13.4).

IT’S A NICHOLS’ BLOCK PARTY • For sophomore Austin Nichols, the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign has become his own personal block party. • After 13 games, the 6-foot-8 forward has 46 blocked shots, which surpasses his blocks total from a season ago (42). • Nichols is ranked fourth in the nation in blocked shots at 3.5 swats per game. • His career blocked shots total is 88. • Nichols has recorded 11 multi-block performances in the Tigers’ first 13 games.
