HEY, DIDN’T WE JUST SEE YOU? • When Memphis and Houston take the court Sunday, it may feel like they just played each other yesterday. • Well, it wasn’t yesterday, but it is a short time period between the two encounters. • The Tigers and Cougars just met Dec. 31, 2014, in Memphis, with the home team posting a 7354 victory. • On Sunday, Jan. 11, the two league foes meet for a second time. • Counting only the days between games, it will be a span of 10 days. • Since 1991-92, it is the fifth-shortest time between meetings with a conference opponent, and the following shows that:

• Sampson met the Tigers twice in the 1990s as the head coach at Oklahoma and lost both encounters. • In 1996-97, Sampson brought his Sooners squad to The Pyramid, and Memphis posted a 61-47 win over Oklahoma on Dec. 23, 1996. • The following season (1997-98), Memphis returned the game to Norman, Okla., and the Tigers won a thrilling 80-78 contest on Dec. 13, 1997. • Then, in his first game against Memphis as the Houston head coach, Sampson’s Cougars dropped a 73-54 decision Dec. 31.

Last season, Woodson and Pollard were teammates at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss. Woodson was the Lions’ second-leading scorer (15.7 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (5.8 rpg). Pollard was the squad’s third-leading scorer (12.0 ppg) and top rebounder (6.4 rpg). The tandem helped lead East Mississippi Community College to a 20-7 record. The Lions advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII semifinal round.

FOLLOWING A LOSS UNDER PASTNER • The Tigers dropped a 73-59 decision to SMU Jan. 8. • However, Memphis has proven to be quite resilient after a loss in the Josh Pastner era. • The Tigers have a 43-5 record (.896 winning percentage) after a loss under Pastner. • With the loss to SMU Jan. 8, Memphis suffered back-to-back losses under Pastner for the first time since near the start of the 2012-13 campaign — 80 games ago. The Tigers lost to Tulane Jan. 3. • Prior to the recent two-game skid, the Tigers last dropped consecutive decisions to VCU and Minnesota Nov. 22-23, 2012.

WHAT THE TIGERS ARE LOOKING TO AVOID ... • First, Memphis is trying to avoid its worse start in conference play since 1998-99. That season, the Tigers began Conference USA play with a 0-4 record. • Next, the Tigers will try to avoid its third-straight conference loss. The last time Memphis lost three-consecutive league games was at the end of the 2004-05 regular season. • That season, the Tigers lost their last four league games in a row to Charlotte, Louisville, Saint Louis and Cincinnati. FIRST TIME SINCE, BACK-TO-BACK LOSS STYLE • With their consecutive losses to Tulane Jan. 3 and SMU Jan. 8, the Tigers had a couple of “first time since” moments. • The consecutive losses are the first since near the start of the 2012-13 season — 80 games ago. The Tigers dropped back-to-back games to VCU and Minnesota in the 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis. • Next, Memphis dropped back-to-back conference decisions since near the end of the 201011 regular season (at UTEP, at East Carolina) — a stretch of 124 games. • Finally, Memphis has its first below .500 record in conference play since the start of the 2003-04 league season — a stretch of 365 total games and 174 conference contests. • In January of 2004, the Tigers started Conference USA play with a 0-2 record after road losses at Southern Miss 66-63 Jan. 10, 2004, and at DePaul 82-73 Jan. 13, 2004.

TURNING UP THE “D” IN DECEMBER • December is supposed to be the month of giving, but the Tigers defense was in a stingy mood in their last seven games of the month, and the following shows that:

LEARNING TO SHARE • With the Tigers having nine first-year players in 2014-15, the team is slowly trying to learn what has become a signature of Josh Pastner squads — sharing the ball. • And Memphis has seen the results of lessons learned from sharing the ball in recent games. • In the last nine contests from Dec. 6-Jan. 8, the Tigers averaged 15.8 assists per game. In its first five games, Memphis averaged only 10.0 assists per contest. • The Tigers also have moved up over 175 spots in the NCAA rankings for assists per game the past eight contests. • Entering the Dec. 6 Bradley game, Memphis ranked No. 298 in the nation in assists per game. Now, the Tigers are ranked No. 122 in assists per contest. • In recent seasons, Memphis has been one of the top teams in assists per game, and the following shows that (along with this year’s current rank):

HIGH DISHIN’ EQUALS MADE SHOTS • One of the main reasons Memphis head coach Josh Pastner loves high assists numbers: it leads to easier shots and more field goals made. • In each of his previous five seasons, Pastner’s squads have assisted on over 50 percent of the team’s field goals made, and the following shows that (also lists this season’s numbers after 14 games):

CRASHING THE BOARDS • The Tigers’ focus in the off-season was on the defensive end, and one area of defense the team worked on was the glass — especially ending opponents’ possessions after one shot. • Memphis has shown what it learned in the early portion of 2014-15. • The Tigers are third in the American Athletic Conference in rebound margin at +5.9. • Memphis is tied for first in the league in rebounding with a 38.8 average. • The Tigers are second in the conference in offensive rebounds (12.9) and fifth in the league in defensive rebounds (25.9). TRACKING TIGERS DOUBLE-DOUBLES • Sophomore Austin Nichols recorded the Tigers’ latest double-double with his 15-point, 11-rebound performance against Houston Dec. 31. • It was Nichols’ second double-double of the season and the third of his career. • The following tracks Memphis’ double-doubles this season: Player/Opponent Dbl-Dbl Nichols/Houston................................. 15-11 King/Western Illinois........................... 12-10^ Burrell/USC Upstate............................ 17^-12^ Nichols/Oklahoma State..................... 11-13^ Goodwin/Bradley................................ 15-12# ^ career high # tied career high

AVERY FOR THREEEEEEE!!!! • Sophomore Avery Woodson entered the Memphis program with the reputation of a solid three-point shooter. And he’s backed it up so far in the early portion of 2014-15. • The 6-foot-2 guard leads the Tigers and is fourth in the American Athletic Conference with a 41.8 shooting percentage (28-of-67) from long distance. • His 2.0 treys made per game also is fifth. • In nine games this season, Woodson has hit two or more three-pointers. • The Waynesboro, Miss., native hit a seasonhigh six three-pointers in the Tigers’ win over Houston Dec. 31 (6-of-10). • Woodson also netted a season-best 23 points versus the Cougars.
