Game #12 • Memphis vs. Loyola, Md. • Page 6 TIGERS ‘BOUNDING THE BOARDS IN 2012-13 • A lot of talk in head coach Josh Pastner’s first three seasons centered about rebounding and the Tigers’ frustration in that area. • Well, it looks as if that’s been corrected early on in the 2012-13 campaign. • Memphis is out-rebounding its opponents by an average margin of +6.2 boards per game (36.830.6), which ranks second in Conference USA. • The Tigers have won the board battle in eight of their 11 contests this season, including games with Minnesota, Ohio and Louisville. • The following shows how the Tigers have done on the glass in Pastner’s tenure (first 11 games of each season only):

DECEMBER’S BEEN GOOD FOR TIGERS • Since the 1999-2000 season, the Tigers have a 67-29 record (.698 winning percentage) when playing in the month of December. • Memphis was 5-3 last December. • The Tigers have won 42 of its last 54 December contests (.778 winning percentage), dating back to the 2004-05 season. TIGERS NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS • Since 1999-2000, the Tigers have a non-conference record (including postseason) of 182-64 for a 74.0 winning percentage. • In 2011-12, Memphis had a 13-6 record against non-conference opponents (including postseason). THE BAHAMAS AND THE AFTER • Tiger Nation may want to refer to “it” as T.B. (through Bahamas) and A.B. (After Bahamas). • That’s the way head coach Josh Pastner and his squad are looking at it. • Despite the 1-2 record in the Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas, Pastner and his team are taking what they learned from that tournament and using those lessons to get better. • The numbers below prove it (T.B. is through Bahamas; A.B. is after Bahamas): T.B. THE JOHNSON EFFECT • Most of the talk coming into 2012-13 was how junior college transfer Geron Johnson was going to help the Tigers offensively. • However, while his offense will eventually come (it came in the form of a season-high 21 points versus Ohio Dec. 5), it’s Johnson’s defense that has helped Memphis early on. • Johnson had to sit out the Tigers’ first three games due to an NCAA-imposed suspension, but has seen action in the last eight contests. • The following shows the defensive improvement with Johnson on the floor: ithout Johnson W Stat With Johnson 44.3 Opp. FG Pct. 40.4 44.4 Opp. 3-Pt. FG Pct. 32.3 +4.4 Rebound Margin +7.9 D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART II • Earlier this season, D.J. Stephens set career highs on the offensive end versus Minnesota Nov. 23, scoring 15 points and hitting three treys. • In the Tigers’ Dec. 28 game versus Oral Roberts, the 6-foot-5 forward put up career numbers defensively. • Stephens posted career bests for rebounds (14) and blocked shots (5) in the win over the Golden Eagles. • His previous career highs were 11 rebounds versus Western Kentucky Dec. 4, 2010, and four blocks versus Southern Miss Feb. 12, 2011.

“G” - FENSE, “G” - FENSE • Junior Geron Johnson, who is called “G” by his teammates, has definitely helped the Tigers’ defense, and the team’s defensive numbers prove it. • But, his individual defensive performance in Memphis’ Dec. 28 win over Oral Roberts was impressive. • In the contest, Johnson was the primary defender on the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, Warren Niles. • Niles entered the contest with a 21.3 scoring average (ninth in the nation) and a 53 percent clip from the arc. • “G” held Niles to only two points on 1-of-11 shooting from the field and 0-of-6 from the arc. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE • Freshman Shaq Goodwin posted the Tigers’ second double-double of 2012-13 with his 17-point, 12-board performance versus UT Martin Nov. 29. • The following tracks Memphis’ double-doubles this season: Player/Opponent Dbl-Dbl Goodwin/UT Martin................................17-12 Crawford/Northern Iowa.........................18-12 SHAQ ON THE GLASS • Freshman Shaq Goodwin had his first doubledigit rebounding game Nov. 29 versus UT Martin (12 rebounds). • The 12 boards were the most by a Tigers freshman since Kareem Cooper pulled down 13 rebounds versus Southern Miss on Feb. 14, 2006. Game #12 • Memphis vs. Loyola, Md. • Page 8 A MEMPHIS STARTING FIVE Tigers Hoops Signees • For the first time in over 20 years, the Tigers put 2 0 1 3 a starting five on the floor all from the city of Memphis in their Nov. 12 season opener. • The starting five from the Bluff City were Tarik Black, Chris Crawford, Ferrakohn Hall, Joe Jackson and Adonis Thomas in Memphis’ Nov. 12 game versus North Florida. The same all-Memphis lineup started the Nov. 17 Samford and Nov. 22 VCU games. • Prior to this year’s season opener, the last time the Tigers placed an all-Memphis starting five on the floor in a season opener was 1987-88. In that year’s season opener versus Jackson State, the all-Memphis starting five were Rodney Douglas, Sylvester Gray, Marvin Alexander, Dwight Boyd and Elliot Perry. • In overall games, the last time an all-Memphis starting five played for the Tigers was on “Senior Day” in 1994-95 season. That game’s (versus Dayton) starting five were Justin Wimmer, Marcus Nolan, Lorenzen Wright, Leon Mitchell and Jason Fox. • The Tigers’ all-time record in which an allMemphis lineup started is 134-42 (.761 winning percentage; includes 2012-13). • The most-successful, all-Memphis starting lineup was the one consisting of Baskerville Holmes-Keith Lee-William Bedford-Vincent Askew-Andre Turner. That all-Memphis starting five went 28-3 in the 1984-85 season. • For a complete historical list of all-Memphis starting fives in the program’s history, look at the box on page 6.
