THE PAINS OF MODERNIZING A COMPANY We sit in a comfortable conference room on the fourth floor of Tigre’s central headquarters, in Joinville. The entire floor – to which few have access, limited to Board members and partners – is expansive and quiet. Cau enjoyed hunting and fishing, particularly fishing in Mato Grosso state, and had several boats that he sailed with family and friends. Some had been bought ready; others he had custom made; and they were all named Criscar (after his daughters Cristiane and Carolina). A lover of the ocean, he sponsored the Schürmann family’s expeditions around the world.4 In the room next door, I walked past the collection of hand fans, smoking pipes and cigarette holders. Delicate mementos of Sawa, of the Minueto products. Rosane Hansen is a tall, lean, haughty woman of measured gestures. She occasionally lets he fragile side show, but, after all that she went through, fragile she is not. Times are now quieter. Standing next to her is Felipe, the couple’s only son, and Chairman of the Board since 2015. AS ANGÚSTIAS PARA MODERNIZAR UMA EMPRESA Estamos numa confortável sala de reuniões no quarto andar do edifício central da Tigre, em Joinville. O andar todo – ao qual poucos têm acesso, apenas diretoria e sócios – é amplo, silencioso. Cau gostava da caça e pesca, principalmente da pesca em Mato Grosso, e tinha vários barcos, que usava em viagens ou para passeios com a família e amigos. Alguns dos barcos eram comprados; outros, mandados fazer; e todos, batizados Criscar (dos nomes das filhas, Cristiane e Carolina). Apaixonado por mar, foi patrocinador da família Schürmann em suas expedições pelo mundo.4 Na sala vizinha, passei pela coleção de leques, cachimbos, piteiras. São memórias delicadas da Sawa, dos Minuetos. Rosane Hansen é uma mulher magra, alta, de gestos econômicos, olhar altivo. Vez ou outra assume o lado frágil, o que ela, depois de tudo pelo que passou, não é. Agora, são tempos de calmaria. A seu lado, Felipe, o único filho homem, presidente do Conselho desde 2015. Ela me mostra o escritório que foi do marido. Tudo continua do mesmo jeito que estava quando Carlos Roberto morreu; é a presença dele, junto à sala que abriga o Instituto que leva seu nome. – Houve um período em que Cau me chamava para a fábrica dizendo: “Vem para cá, vais conhecendo a engrenagem, vais ver como funcionam as obras sociais, assim fazes alguma coisa aqui dentro”. Eram muitos benefícios, de todos os tipos: hospitais, creches… Aliás, um dos sonhos não realizados de Cau foi construir uma grande creche aqui dentro. Eu brincava dizendo que isto parecia uma prefeitura, com tantos departamentos sociais a cuidar, e ele me dizia: “Vem. Um dia tu vais fazer essa parte”. Quanto a Felipe, uma das primeiras palavras que aprendeu em casa foi Tigre.

Everything still stands as it was when Carlos Roberto died; it is his presence, next to the room that houses the Institute named in his honor. “There was a time when Cau would call me over to the factory and say, ‘Come on, get to know the gears, see how our social works operate, that way you can work here, too.’ We had lots of benefits of every kind: hospitals, daycare centers… In fact, one of Cau’s unrealized dreams was to build a big daycare center right here. I used to joke, saying that it was like a City Hall, with so many social departments to take care of, and he’d say, ‘Come on over. One day you’ll be part of it all’.” As for Felipe, one of the first words to come out of his mouth was Tigre. 4 The Schürmanns are a family from Santa Catarina state famous for sailing around the world. They set off in 1984 and spent ten years sailing across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. They then retraced Magellan’s route and, in the final leg of the circumnavigation, Pedro Álvares Cabral’s path from Lisbon to Brazil. They have published several books on their voyages.

4 Os Schürmann são uma família catarinense famosa por ter dado a volta ao mundo em veleiro. Partiram em 1984 e passaram dez anos velejando pelo Atlântico, Pacífico e Índico. Refizeram depois a rota de Fernão de Magalhães e, na última etapa dessa circunavegação, o percurso de Pedro Álvares Cabral entre Lisboa e o Brasil. Publicaram vários livros sobre essas viagens.
