Said Amir Arjomand is Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University and is the editor of the Journal of Persianate Studies. His books include The Shadow of God and the Hidden Imam (1984), The Turban for the Crown: The Islamic Revolution in Iran (1988) and After Khomeini: Iran Under His Successors (2009).

Reza Aslan is a contributing editor at the Daily Beast (thedailybeast. com). His books include No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam (2005), Beyond Fundamentalism: Confronting Religious Extremism in a Globalized Age (2010) and Tablet & Pen: Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East (2011).

Golbarg Bashi teaches Iranian and Middle Eastern Studies at Rutgers University and is a frequent contributor to Tehran Bureau. Her writings can be found at golbargbashi.com.

Hossein Bashiriyeh is one of post-revolutionary Iran’s key political thinkers. His books include the monumental State and Revolution in Iran, 1962–1982 (1984). He taught political science at the University of Tehran from 1983 until 2007, when he was fired for political reasons. He now teaches political science at Syracuse University.

Ahmad Batebi became an iconic figure amid Iran’s 1999 student protests when his photo appeared on the front cover of The Economist holding a bloodstained shirt. Thereafter, he was sentenced to ten years in prison. Now living in exile in the US, he is widely regarded among Iranians as an icon of democratic struggle.

Asef Bayat is Professor of Sociology and Middle East Studies at the University of Illinois. His books include Workers and Revolution in Iran (1987), Street Politics: Poor People’s Movements in Iran (1997), Making Islam Democratic: Social Movements and the Post-Islamist Turn (2007) and Life as Politics: How Ordinary People Change the Middle East (2010).
