When she started ART BOX, Creative Learning Producer Emma Hewitt hoped the project would give children a unique way to explore art and creativity over the school holidays.

Those first 50 Art Boxes – filled with activities designed by local artists and creatives – sold out almost immediately.

“The idea behind ART BOX is to introduce children and families to the breadth of creative practice – to show that art can be from and about anything. The activities are fun and interesting and often a bit weird,” says Hewitt.

One year on, 50 boxes have become 250, and ART BOX is now part of a suite of three art programs for children. ART CLUB runs after school for eight weeks each term, while ART SCHOOL is a series of workshops that take place each school holidays. Like ART BOX, both new programs are facilitated by professional artists, who design activities based on their own practice.

“The opportunity to work with practising artists is what makes it so incredible,” says Hewitt. “Children are getting to see what it’s like working with high-calibre artists like Tarryn Gill and Bruno Booth. It really helps them explore what art is and what it can be, and to learn about their own creativity.”

The popularity of the programs in their first year is a mark of their success, says Hewitt. “It’s fantastic to hear how much families have loved the programs. I’ve had parents tell me it had completely changed the way their child engaged with art and creativity.”

Culture for children

This year we’re expanding on our children’s program with bilingual rhyme time sessions and fun, inclusive cultural activities across the city.

Local Noongar woman Rickeeta Walley gives an introduction to Noongar language with Koolangka Waangkiny, Noongar language storytime. Each dual-language storytelling session includes simple Noongar songs and stories – either traditional or contemporary – along with a fun creative activity. Chinese language baby rhyme time introduces children to the culture and language of China, with familiar rhymes and songs in both English and Mandarin.

Children can learn about the local history of Yagan Mia Wireless Hill, with Museum Learning Programs for students in Years 2 and 3. Available for groups of up to 50 students, these exciting programs teach children about the geography and many-layered stories of this unique site.
