It’s Time to Pull the
GARLIC MUSTARD! OUTDOOR LIVING
Dr. Carla Gull blogs at www. insideoutsidemichiana.com and hosts the podcast Loose Parts Nature Play. She is often seen with her four adventurers in the greater Michiana area. Aliens among us? Yes, even in our local plant world there are plants that do not belong disguising themselves as spring foliage.
THE BAD NEWS
Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is a non-native invasive plant prolific this time of year. It can easily overtake an area, spreading quickly along a forest edge or disturbed area. It can invade forested areas as well, which few nonnatives do. Each stalk can produce 600 or more seeds, so one plant equals significant impact. The dense plots of garlic mustard choke out native plants in that area. Seeds are viable for over 5 years. Additionally, chemicals from the plant alter the soil nearby, making it harder for other plants to grow in that area.
THE GOOD NEWS
Garlic mustard is really easy to pull! And, it is edible, with a slight garlicky taste! While easy to pull at the base of the plant, be sure to get at least the upper half of the root. Pulling before seeds develop is essential or we become part of the spread of this invasive plant. Keep revisiting the area yearly, pulling for at least 5 years or until it no longer reappears.
IDENTIFICATION
Garlic mustard is a biennial. That means it has two stages of growth over two years to produce seeds. The first 6 inMiddlebury Magazine | MAY 2022
Top - Pull at the base of the long, second year stalk to get the roots.
Second - First year growth with more rounded leaves—these are great to eat! Third - The heart shaped, pointy leaves and white flowers indicate second year growth. Bottom - Easily pull garlic mustard to fight this invasive species!
year, it is lower to the ground, with round shaped leaves with scalloped edges. Crushing the leaves will yield a garlicky smell. The second year, the plant gets taller with pointy heart-shaped, serrated leaves and small white flowers. Seed pods usually develop in June—do not pull when seeds are present.
DISPOSING OF GARLIC MUSTARD
Unfortunately, garlic mustard needs to be bagged and put in the garbage or burned. Seeds can still develop after the plant is pulled so composting and other methods of disposal help it spread.
EATING GARLIC MUSTARD
Garlic mustard does have a garlicky taste. The first year leaves are typically the best to eat. The young leaves can be added to salad, made into pesto, sautéed as a green, added to soup, or used as a seasoning.
BE A GARLIC MUSTARD CRUSADER!
While garlic mustard is an invasive plant, we can do something about it. Identify garlic mustard in the two stages and pull it up when you walk past it and throw it away. As a community, we can work toward healthier habitats by being vigilant around garlic mustard every spring.

MIDDLEBURY TEAM MEMBERS WORK TOWARD CYC CERTIFICATION Four team members at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County are working toward completing their Child & Youth Care (CYC) certification. Rhonda Eicher, Marisa Lutton and Denise Ward from the Middlebury Club and Grace Hostetler from the Nappanee Club will join Whitney Miller and Nicole Sullivan from the Elkhart Club who already have their CYC credentials. CYC is an assessment process and certification for child and youth care professionals who demonstrate high standards of care and commitment to ongoing competence development. The CYC certification program is the most rigorous demonstration of competence in the field. “We are so proud that our team members are taking this next step to show their commitment to the young people that are placed in our care every day,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County Chief Operations Officer Launa Leftwich. The certification provides an assessment process and certification to child and youth care practitioners who demonstrate their commitment to high standards of care and ongoing competence development. The CYC certification program is the most
rigorous demonstration of competence in the field. “Having the opportunity to further my education in my career field and having my Child & Youth Care Certification is important to me because I didn’t get my Bachelor’s degree in this field. I wasn’t aware of my passion for youth work until I took a summer job after graduating,” Eicher said.
Ward
Others on the team have similar reasons for pursing the certification. “I decided to pursue this because it would be another notch in my belt to help kids and find different ways to help them,” Ward said. “Through a myriad of roles, I have been working with youth for 30 years. The science, especially when dealing with the social/emotional aspects, has evolved so much. I need to learn to evolve with it,” Lutton said. “Taking this course over the past couple months, it was awesome to meet people from other Boys & Girls Clubs around Indiana and learn new tips and tricks they use in their everyday Club life. I am so blessed to be a part of an organization who truly helps, trains, and equips their employees to be the best they can be,” Hostetler said.

Krider Rest Area Dedicated
Donors, stakeholders, and community members gathered at the site of the Krider Rest Area along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail in Middlebury at noon on Friday, April 1, to dedicate the new facility. The formal dedication was held at the nearby pavilion due to the blustery weather and a brief but intense snow shower. The rest area consists of a restroom 10 inMiddlebury Magazine | MAY 2022
facility, a bike repair station, a drinking fountain, and extensive landscaping. Many groups and individuals worked together to achieve this longtime goal: the Bontrager Family Foundation, the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, the Friends of the Middlebury Parks, the Friends of the Pumpkinvine, the Middlebury Park Board, the Trails Committee, the Landscape Committee, Mary Cripe, the Middlebury Town Council, the Pumpkinvine Cyclery, the Scott and Vonnie Trumble family, John Dodd, the Poyser family, the First United Methodist Church, A&B Lawn and Landscape, and the staffs of the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department, Middlebury Public Works, and Middlebury Water Department.
After a brief speech by Middlebury Park Superintendent Tom Enright recognizing the various contributors, refreshments were served, including two veggie pizzas designed to look like bicycle wheels. The facility was opened in the autumn of 2021 and closed for the winter, but is now reopened for the warmer months ahead. During its brief open period last fall, many trail users expressed their thanks for the facility via emails. As the weather warms up, riders and walkers on the trail as well as visitors to Krider World’s Fair Garden will appreciate this facility resulting from the cooperation of the groups and individuals who worked together to create this rest area.

GREECE
On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, a group of students and parents gathered to learn about an educational tour to Greece to take place over spring break of 2021. Within a few days of the meeting, 35 students and adults made the commitment to be part of the trip. The countdown to Greece had begun. COVID arrived and the trip was put on hold–either to be canceled or delayed. 21 of the participants opted for a refund or a voucher for future travel. The remaining 14 held on. After vaccinations, boosters, a negative COVID test, mask requirements, and 1,066 days of waiting, those 14 adventurers boarded a flight to Greece on April 1, 2022…finally! The group, composed of students, teachers, and family members, headed out for a 9 day educational tour of Greece. The students were Alaina Bache, Wrigley Koch, Makenna Helm, Zayna Johnson, and Reed Frecker. The adults were Ellen & Bruce Augustine, Dr. Michelle Bache, Tony & Lenndra Frecker, Paul & Corinne Johnson, and Dan & Mary Shroyer. Some of the highlights of the tour included a one-day tour to three Greek islands (Hydra, Poros, & Aegina), the acropolis & Parthenon in Athens, the Temple of Poseidon, the Corinth Canal, the ancient theater in Epidaurus, King Agamemnon’s tomb & the acropolis at Mycenae, the ancient sites at Olympia & Delphi, participation in a pottery workshop, and various museums along the way. The tour ended on April 9th. 12 inMiddlebury Magazine | MAY 2022
Makenna Helm, a sophomore at Northridge High, wanted to keep touring. “I was not excited to come home. I loved how beautiful Greece was and how friendly everyone was. I loved getting to see historical monuments that we learn about in school and learning more about them. The trip went by too fast for me, I would have loved to stay longer.” Ellen Augustine, Northridge English/theater teacher, expressed her amazement of the Grecian experience, “Being a long-time theater director, I was especially excited to visit some of the oldest theaters in the world. Not only were they impressive in structure, but also in acoustics - almost perfect! That’s quite an accomplishment given the time of construction.” She also loved the landscapes and the experience of a variety of foods. The cultural differences were also interesting to observe. Paul Johnson, the Northridge High teacher who led the trip stated, “These trips really are eye-opening for the students and adults. It is amazing to experience all those things that we have only seen in pictures at school.” Northridge High students and family members who wish to travel internationally in the future will have some opportunities. Jon Bowen, a Social Studies teacher, has a trip to France scheduled for the summer of 2023. Jessica Bontrager, a World Language teacher, has a trip to Mexico planned for the summer of 2024. Anyone interested in those trips can reach out to bowenj@mcsin-k12.org or bontragerj3@ mcsin-k12.org for more information.

From Classroom to Collaboration
How a former Northridge student and NHS instructor became percussion partners
When Tristan Swihart joined the Northridge High School Marching band as a percussionist in 2012, Micah Detweiler was his marching band and private instructor. Ten years later, the two are friends and cocollaborators. They also are partners in pax duo where they perform, record, teach, tour, and more.
“The marching band show in 2012 was entitled Et in Terra Pax,” said Swihart, so the name pax duo pays homage to the pair’s initial meeting. “We stayed pretty connected while he was in college,” said Detweiler of Swihart, who graduated from Eastman School of Music in 2021 with a Bachelor of Music in percussion performance and a certificate in Arts Leadership. The two would bounce ideas off of each other and keep each other in the loop about new percussion developments. That connection led to the creation of their project. Says Detweiler, “pax duo is about exploring music we love and showing people who aren’t as familiar with percussion music what it’s about…. We want to help make [people] aware of all the incredible possibilities there are within the classical percussion genre. We also want to be a group that helps lift up other artists around us, whether that’s through commissioning new compositions, hiring videographers to create music videos, or by performing with other musicians.” Recently, the two worked with the Indiana All-State Percussion Ensemble, and they
14 inMiddlebury Magazine | MAY 2022
also held percussion clinics at several middle schools, high schools, and at Goshen College. Even though Swihart now lives in Wisconsin and Detweiler lives in Elkhart, the two are grateful for their meeting in NHS marching band. They also have a message for the Middlebury community and students: “Thank you to all of the Middlebury community for all of the support for the arts over the years,” said Swihart. “Your support really does mean the world to the students at Northridge.” Detweiler encourages the Northridge students by saying, “Don’t be afraid to relentlessly pursue what you love. You can create a niche for yourself somewhere in the world to have a career that is both fulfilling and pays the bills…. At the same time, know that creating a career for yourself is hard work. You have to put in the work to get the results.”
You can follow pax duo on Facebook and YouTube by going to each site and typing in “pax duo.” You can hear their performance of “Bloom Suite” by Elliot Cole that the two adapted for marimba.

NORTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
LEXIE HUYS
Hi, my name is Lexie Huys and I’m a senior at Northridge. I am the youngest daughter of Kathy Huys. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old when I started ballet classes. I have been on a competition dance team from the time I was in 2nd grade until my junior year. I competed in ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop. In 8th grade I tried out and made the Northridge Raider Dance Team Raiderettes, which was its first year in existence. When I was a freshman, I tried out for the NRDT Emeralds. I was on the team for 3 years. During this time we competed in 4-5 invitionals, regionals, and state each year. We also danced at most of the home girls and boys basketball games. Our teams competed in jazz and hip hop, and I also competed in a small ensemble and a solo. During my senior year I have been taking a tap class and working on a duet with Kendra Steury at CK Dance Studio. I decided to take a break from team sports my senior year so that I could pursue other interests. I have been on the yearbook staff for the past 4 years and have learned a lot about photography. I have taken what I learned and have spent a great deal of time this year taking pictures. I
have attended many sporting events, as well as performing arts and other Northridge activities. I have turned my interest into a small business where I have been taking senior pictures, family pictures, friend pictures, engagement pictures, and even some wedding pictures. I have also been a member of the Junior Optimist Club for the past 3 years. We have done volunteer work at various sporting events. What I enjoyed most about being a member of a team or staff was getting to work with others and being creative. I have made a lot of friendships through the dance team and the yearbook staff that I might not have made if I hadn’t been a part of these teams. Many of these friendships I will carry with me as I move into the next phase of my life. During my free time, I like to play my guitar. I am selftaught (along with youtube) and play with our praise band at church. After I graduate from Northridge, I plan to go to Ball State University to pursue a major in graphic design and a minor in photography.

Spring is finally here, and with it longer, brighter, warmer days perfect for puddle-jumping, parkhopping, and getting that garden going strong. Our children (and sometimes their parents) are already more outside than in on a given day, but we’re all still gearing up for spring with a heaping helping of read-alouds and read-alones. Here’s our family’s recommendations for spring reads, most of which are available through the Middlebury Public Library. Our resident two-yearold, Digory, is into very high-brow stuff these days, namely the classic Llama, Llama, Red Pajama (Anne Dewdney). He seems to have found a kindred spirit here, particularly on the page where the titular llama is screaming its lungs out for Mama Llama. Thankfully, Baby Llama learns a little bit about patience by the end of the book, and we hope Digory is getting the same. He is also currently a big fan of the large and colorful Hooray for Fish (Lucy Cousins). He’s been learning more colors, and this book offers a veritable school of them to point to.

Louisa (4) recently discovered a gem of a book on display at the library, The Lady and the Spider (Faith McNulty). She has had a fairly fraught relationship with spiders in recent months, and this gently-illustrated book about the daily life of a spider on a head of lettuce in a lady’s garden seems to have helped a bit. McNulty treats her subjects with care, quietness, and curiosity. In the same observant gardening vein, Louisa also enjoys Kate Messner’s beautifully-written Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt. Percy (6) was especially taken by a recent readaloud, John Ruskin’s The King of the Golden River. This 1840s fairytale tells the tale of three brothers (two cruel, one kind-hearted to a fault) who encounter a golden dwarf, who offers them treasure aplenty if they follow his instructions. Percy loves the funny characters and the just demise of the greedy brothers. We all love how generosity and sacrifice wins in the end. The Middlebury Library has a gorgeous copy available, illustrated by Quentin Blake.
FROM THE FAMILY BOOKSHELF
Springtime Reads
Kai (7) is into scary and funny stuff, so he is currently wearing out Oliver Hunkin’s abridged version of Pilgrim’s Progress called Dangerous Journey. This edition is richly illustrated in a distinctly 80s-animation sort of style, which includes hilarious caricatures and some genuinely scary depictions of dragons, lions, and giants. Fair warning – some kids of this age might not be up for the scary stuff; if you’re looking for a version that’s a little tamer, we recommend the Little Pilgrim’s Progress (Taylor/Sutphin). Kai also just finished Charlotte’s Web (E. B. White), and his favorite characters are the goose and Templeton the rat. Nadia (9) has been enjoying classics like The Secret of the Andes (Ann Nolan Clark), The Summer of the Monkeys (Rawls), and The Sign of the Beaver (Speare), all of which seem to feed her introverted soul and interest in animals. She and the boys particularly enjoyed our recent readaloud of The Hobbit (Tolkien), which we found surprisingly well-paced. Every chapter has some sort of obstacle to overcome or monster to fight, and all along you know there’s a big dragon at the end.
Linnea’s most recent read is Miracle at Philadelphia (Catherine Drinker Bowen), a detailed and fascinating history of the 1787 Constitutional Convention. In particular, she has found the spirit of compromise exemplified in it – out of passionate conflict and from leaders of deep and opposing convictions – to be the most inspiring. She and Nadia are also thoroughly enjoying their joint reading of Alcott’s Little Women. We can’t wait to show her Greta Gerwig’s incredible 2019 film adaptation of the book.
For myself (Chris), I’m in the thick of C. S. Lewis’s fantasy/sci-fi Space Trilogy. I’m enjoying the mythology, the exploration of new worlds, the philosophical questions, and Lewis’s sharp wit. And thanks to the efforts of the amazing librarians at MPL and the interlibrary loan program, I snagged a volume of poetry by Olav Hauge, a Norwegian farmer and poet whose work is genuinely wise and beautiful. We hope you find some time to enjoy these books (or others like them) here and there during a busy spring! – The Wheelers inMiddlebury Magazine | MAY 2022 21
If Only the Best (from My Home By the River and Other Poems) Mary Elaine Miller If only the best of authors would write, How scarce the stories would be! If only the fleetest of ships would sail, But few would travel the sea. If only the best of musicians would sing, Most people would be without song. If only the prettiest flowers would bloom, To whom would those flowers belong? If only the very best player would play, What fun could he have all alone? If only the liveliest brooklet would run, How many would hear its sweet tone? If only the very best grain would grow, What flour could be used to make bread? If only the best of the chefs would cook, What millions would be unfed! So tackle the tasks which come to your hand With all of the talent you own, And do not despair if you cannot excel, For the best cannot do it alone.

blackbird (from Solace: Poems for the Broken Season) Chris Wheeler It’s always spring when I hear it — feathers in the wind, the hollow-boned chirrup of the red-winged blackbirds. They perch perpendicular upon the weathered posts, old boundary spikes at the edge of the next field, naked of wire and lonely as a wintered heart. They perch there, like petals pinned to bracken, a thicket of red — and they sing. I don’t remember the song until I hear it, but I think the lonely thorns can’t help but love the rose. And I, a passing soul, remember things I’d forgotten and go forth rejoicing with the blackbirds.

A HUGE Thank you to Dan Pinckert for donating and installing lights for our Executive Director and Director of Equine Development office. We are so happy with your work and your kind heart. We truly appreciate it! – Shelley Becker @ LoveWay Congratulation to directors Augi & Nicole for Northridge Middle School’s successful production of “School House Rock Jr!” Your investment in our kids makes a lifelong impact. – NMS theater parents
We want to say thank you to A and B Lawn and Landscaping for keeping our lane plowed in the winter, taking a day to clean our yard after our mother’s stroke in 2020, and last but not least, putting ground asphalt on our driveway. Bryan said he wanted to make a smoother rider for our mother and he did. We very much appreciate their nice work and their thoughtfulness and kindness, too.
I would like to give a heartfelt shout out to Doug Edland. Mr. Edlund is not only a police officer in our community, but also a custodian at Orchard View Elementary school. For the past 11 years (as our 3 children have gone through Orchard View) we have stood in awe time and time again as Mr. Edlund invested heart and soul into the lives of each and every child there. He welcomes them at the door each day, loves joking around with them, has traditions he keeps with them, helps them when they are sick, and makes them feel safe. He is more than a custodian to those students...he is a role model and friend. Thank you, Mr. Edlund, your kindness has made this world a better place. – Matt and Jamie Fisher
A huge thanks to Mr. Cone for teaching Northridge Middle School band with passion. You make learning fun for our kids. Plus, research has indicated that learning to play a musical instrument increases intelligence by 10 percent! Your teaching will make a difference for years to come. – A band mom
Thank you to the Northridge Area Swim Association board of directors: Tyler Bellin, Nicole Sullivan, JaNielle Clemens, Rebecca Yeater, Tabby Bratt and Emily Gephart. Our swimmers learn and develop physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally in a safe and supportive environment thanks to the many hours you volunteer. – Grace Bonewitz
