outdoor LIVING

A Natural Holiday By Dr. Carla Gull

Story and Photos by Dr. Carla Gull

Traditionally, natural elements have been a part of our holidays. Continue to make nature a part of your holiday traditions this year. Bringing Outside In

Bring the outside in by decorating with pine cones, pine garlands, and other natural elements. We make natural ornaments, using various bits of nature. Using a hot glue gun with supervision, pine cones, sweet gum balls, sticks, and more, form ornaments to hang on the tree.

Feed the Birds Decorations outside can also help feed the birds. Cut cardboard into holiday shapes like trees and stars, making a hole in the top. Spread with peanut butter and roll in birdseed. Tie a ribbon through the hole and hang on a tree outside. Make an ice sculpture with natural elements by using a bundt pan. Add natural elements, such Places to Buy as cranberries, greens, etc., and water. Freeze the Live Trees & Greenery water. Take the ice sculpture out of the pan and AJ’s Tree Farm & Nursery hang from a tree. 1011 Trout Creek Road, Bristol Scents of the Holidays www.AJsTreeFarm.com Bring the scents of the holidays into your home Eby’s Evergreen Plantation by making a simple simmering sauce. Simmer 51669 County Road 33, Bristol orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves www.ExceptionalTrees.com in a couple of inches of water. Mason jars of simmering sauce make a great homemade gift to a friend or neighbor.

Holiday Traditions

Make nature a part of your holiday traditions. Many families hunt for a perfect Christmas tree at nearby tree farms. We go on a New Year’s Day hike each year. We also do Christmas nature scavenger hunts, looking for the colors of the season, snowflakes, evergreen trees, shepherd hook branches, etc. How do you make getting outside a part of your holiday tradition?

Give the Gift of Nature Try the gift of nature as part of holiday giving. One year, we gave cousins the gift of a monthly nature club, spending time outside together monthly. Other gift ideas may be tools to explore nature, such as field guides, nets, bug jars, or gift certificates to local natural activities. Dr. Carla Gull blogs at www.InsideOutsideMichiana.com. She is often seen with her four tag-along explorers in the greater Michiana area. 4 inMiddlebury Magazine | DECEMBER 2014

around TOWN | Boys & Girls Club

‘Tis the Season… to Learn! By Lindsay Saunders Associate Executive Director, B&G Club Middlebury

What’s the key to a successful after-school program?

FUN!

And it’s fun that Brittany Learning Center’s Educational Director, Brittany Bayless Bayless creates every day as Education Director in the Club’s Learning Center where she develops, coordinates, and implements the Boys & Girls Club’s academic programs. Fun with a Purpose

The Big Picture

From discovering the unique qualities and habitat of the polar bear through making and experimenting with ‘blubber’ to exploring the scientific method and creatively testing hypotheses in the group Mad Scientists, Brittany’s programs provide the hands-on experiences that encourage Club kids to fall in love with learning.

When they’re not receiving academic assistance through tutoring, Super Kids members participate in career sessions that introduce and allow them to explore a variety of different professions and career opportunities.

“I try to always find a way to make the topic I’m teaching fun and engaging,” says Brittany. “At the Club, we do this through high-yield activities designed to give members interactive, fun experiences that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”

Helping Those Who Need Us Most In addition to programs like Lego Robotics and Book Club, Brittany also manages Super Kids, a 36-week homework assistance and career exploration program which provides academic support for Club members performing below grade level in math and reading.

“The career sessions allow us to drive home the importance of education and motivate our kids to succeed,” says Brittany. “Each session is led by a guest speaker or presenter in the profession who takes the time to tell our kids the important role education played and continues to play in their career.”

“We were able to serve 40 Club members last year through Super Kids. 99% of our Super Kids participants increased their performance in math on the program’s post-test.”   – Brittany Bayless This article is brought to you by:

Donations may also be taken at Town Hall at any time of the year. The generous support from the community has allowed the Parks Department to beautify the town with flowers for many years. Your continued support will make sure we can continue to make Middlebury a beautiful place for both the residents and our visitors.

2014 Just Flew Right By! by Julie Whitehead, Chamber Marketing Committee Chair

Here are a few tidbits from the Chamber of Commerce… December Third Friday This year’s Third Friday in December falls on the 19th, only six days before Christmas! Our theme for the December Third Friday has always been Sharing Means Caring. In our wonderful community, we unapologetically focus on the reason for the season. Our schools still decorate for the holiday and provide wonderful programs filled with music and reminders of the Greatest of Gifts. I challenge you this year to mark your calendars today: reserve time to take a break from the hustle and bustle. Gather up your kids, your spouse, your dogs, your friends, and plan to walk around the downtown shops, up to the library and back, looking at the ice sculptures created by our guest artisans. I’m sure you’ll be able to find some hot coffee or cocoa in a to-go cup at the Village Inn or the Legendary Grind to warm your hands (and it wouldn’t hurt to have a piece of pie or a muffin while you’re at it!) The merchants will stay open late once again that evening in case you need a few more gifts to wrap. They will also be collecting non-perishable food items to give to the Middlebury Food Pantry. Wouldn’t it be a good thing to give just a little more to folks less fortunate this year? We are truly blessed to live in our community. So take some time to stop and reflect on the gifts that we have, to take in the lights and sounds of the season, and to give something to help someone you don’t even know. Make plans to join us on December 19th from 4-8 pm.

Chamber 1st Annual Directory Photo Contest Middlebury is home to some amazing photographers. I enjoy seeing their work on the cover of this magazine and on Facebook. Well, it’s time to recognize those artists! The Chamber has decided to hold a contest to determine which photographer will have one of their photos placed as the front cover of our Annual Membership Directory. The contest will be held during the Chamber Annual Dinner on Tuesday, March 10th, 2015. The photographer must be able to demonstrate that the photo’s subject(s) occur within the Middlebury community. Landscapes, people, animals, buildings – all will be considered for the contest. More details will be released after the first of the year through the Chamber so warm up those cameras and get to work! For more information, call 825.4300, visit 201 E Winslow Street, or visit www.MiddleburyInChamber.com and www.Facebook.com/ MiddleburyChamberofCommerce. DECEMBER 2014

Experience the EverGreen Difference Kelly Rose, left, Founder and Chairman of the Board and Mike Shoeffler, CEO of EverGreen.

By Stephanie J. Salisbury Photos by Kris Mueller

“I’m a steward shepherding this company. It’s all about the people and the legacy.” – Kelly Rose Kelly Rose, Founder and Chairman of the Board of EverGreen RV, accepted the baton from Art Decio at Skyline RV which they just recently acquired. Rose plans to honor their great tradition and “innovate that into our EverGreen tradition as we build our own heritage. There is no doubt in my mind that Art Decio is Elkhart County’s number one citizen, and it is a humbling honor to purchase Skyline from a man of his character and integrity.”

The Birth of EverGreen In his mid-20s, Rose co-founded ASA Electronics with Tom Irions. In 1990, at the age of 40, he sold his 50% stake to Irions and purchased Starcraft, bringing it out of bankruptcy, and his corporate office was located in

12 inMiddlebury Magazine | DECEMBER 2014

Goshen for two decades. After taking it public in 1993, he then sold Starcraft to another publicly traded company and, in 2008, started EverGreen, relocating to Middlebury four years ago. “When we first bought all of the assets from a bankrupt company and started EverGreen at the height of the recession, I bought the building two days before Christmas. Some thought it was a crazy move, but others felt it was the best move we could have ever made. Many times when you travel against the grain, the road less traveled can give you more inspiration and opportunity for success.”

Why Middlebury? “Even though it’s grown and changed a lot, Middlebury is full of ‘salt of the earth’ people at the foundation. It’s different from every other community, with a system of down-home, family core values,” says Rose. EverGreen employs around 600 people, many Amish. “They bring a sense of spirituality to the workplace that can affect a lot of good people who struggle. They influence their coworkers with peace of mind, family orientation, and God.

EverGreen Milestones

December 2013

“We have some really good people who know what they’re doing, starting with Mike [Schoeffler, CEO] and Mark [Boessler, President and COO]; it just permeates throughout the company from management, to production, and beyond. The people in this company are what I am most proud of.”

Looking to the Future EverGreen is different because of the quality of their products and the character and integrity of their people, according to Kelly Rose. Those people and products are bringing the company into the next chapter right now.

EverGreen and Lifestyle EverGreen RV manufactures lightweight, affordable, quality-built travel trailers, toy haulers, and fifth wheels. You might have noticed them in the news quite a bit – besides acquiring Skyline RV in October, they also have won awards from RV Pro (Best of Show 2014) and RV Business (a Top RV debut, 2013) for their Lifestyle Luxury RV line. Lifestyle manufactures premium models for year-round living comfort, including a shockingly spacious living area, luxurious furnishings, and beautifully-crafted cabinetry.

Charity Makes a Difference Child and Parent Services, or CAPS, knows EverGreen well. The CAPS building is the ‘Joy Rose Center’, named after Kelly Rose’s mother ten years after she passed away. Besides CAPS as their number one charity, EverGreen also works with the Boys and Girls Club, Elkhart County 4-H Fair, and The Crossing, as well as several other charities. Giving back is extremely important and is something they will continue to do in our community.

Middlebury Gives Back The number of ways in which Middlebury area neighbors take care of one another is remarkable all throughout the year. Here are a few ways which you can help others in need this holiday season. Boys and Girls Club

LoveWay

Looking for a good dose of holiday cheer? Volunteers are needed to help out at the Club’s Christmas party 2:15 – 6:30 pm on December 18th. The Club is accepting food and cash donations for the party, too. Another way to help is to donate new handmade or store-bought hats, mittens, and gloves for the Hat and Mitten Tree, from which each kid can select an item at the party. Interested in adopting a local family for Christmas? The Club can help connect you with various resources.

LoveWay has an ongoing wish list for general office needs as well as a wish list for the barn. Contact them for an updated list which contains everything from copy paper, postage stamps, kids’ music CDs, and tissues to Troxel riding helmets and horse treats. They are always in need of volunteers, with opportunities starting in January. For more info: Molly Gangwer, Office Administrator & Volunteer Coordinator, 825.5666, molly@lovewayinc.org.

For the second year, Resolution Run Founders Amy Checkley and Barb Holaway have organized this 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun walk with proceeds to benefit the Middlebury Food Pantry, and they couldn’t be more excited! “Last year’s race was amazing!” says Amy. “Even though it was cold and a bit snowy, our racers showed up and had a good time. We had fantastic volunteers that helped the race run smoothly. Pam Bingaman [Director of the Middlebury Food Pantry] was giddy with an ear-to-ear smile. She asked us that day, ‘You’re going to do this again, right?’” “The Food Pantry’s shelves are bare after the holidays,” says Barb, “and this event is a great reminder to give while enjoying a refreshing winter

Congratulations to the Northridge Raider football team on an unprecedented season – the best in recent history! With seven regular season wins, a sectional win against Bishop Dwenger, and a regional win against Norwell, we’re overjoyed to share in the excitement of our outstanding team, coaching staff, and everyone else who makes Raider Football what it is.

This magazine was sent to print prior to the Semi-State game on November 21st, so we’re unable to predict the future but, based on everything else they have accomplished this season, we're as proud as can be of our Northridge Raiders!

School Spirit Debit Card Program First State Bank is pleased to offer our School Spirit Debit Card Program to parents, students, and all who would like to support their high school. By using this card, First State Bank will make a donation to your school each time you swipe, press credit, and sign.

Northridge High School

IB Sciences Field Study Day Recently, 41 Northridge High School IB science students and their instructors began a full day of planning, designing, and conducting experiments to fulfill the requirements of the IB Group 4 Project. The Group 4 project is an interdisciplinary activity in which all IB Diploma Program science students must participate. Students are expected to analyze a topic or problem that can be investigated in all of the experimental science disciplines offered here at Northridge (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). The scope of this year’s projects ranged from water quality, to efficiency of synthetic and natural lubricants, to food studies. Toward the end of November, students

presented their investigations and findings to Mrs. Hannah, Mr. Gerber, and Mrs. Simons (the IB science staff ) in the annual Group 4 symposium. The symposium was a wonderful opportunity for the students to show off what they have learned about their topic and discuss with their instructors the implications of their work on society and our community.

NHS Transportation Team The Northridge transportation class is hard at work constructing two super mileage cars that will achieve an extensive amount of fuel mileage, one for the IMSTEA Super Mileage Challenge and the other for the Shell Eco Marathon. This class is solely funded by donations from the community and is seeking more contributions. SwingFry

Thank you all for helping to make SwingFry 2014 a big success! So many parents volunteered in so many ways. From battering and frying fish and chicken to ticket and bake sales, we were armed and ready for the masses that flooded Northridge High School for last month’s performances! This was a record-breaking event for us. According to our final count, we served 2,048 dinners. That is the largest group served in SwingFry history! We had the largest bake sale, the greatest ticket sale total, and the best overall profit in our recorded history, too! After all of your hard work, we hope that you enjoyed that big party, and especially the entertainment! Thank you, again, for the wonderful support you showed our choral department! – Mrs. Armington and Mr. Norwood, NMS Choir Directors

The event was held in the Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium and was attended by over 12,000 people. Northridge finished in 8th place for Class B, which is the 2nd largest class of four based on school size. The Raider Band’s 2014 production was entitled Age of Progress, and was conducted by Drum Major Nicholas Tibbs. Congratulations, band, on the results of all of your hard work this season.

Middlebury Elementary Food Pantry Walk A tradition at Middlebury Elementary School is to give back to the community at Christmas time. On the first of December, Middlebury students will begin collecting canned and dry foods to be taken down to the food pantry on December 19th. All of these items will be placed into bags and the entire school will walk down to the food pantry to hand deliver the items to the pantry. What a wonderful sight it is to see 300+ students and adults walking down Main Street to give Mrs. Buller and Mr. Miller walk with students to the pantry. to those who are experiencing troubled times. In the past, bus drivers and Amish schools have helped to gather donations. It is also a great opportunity to teach all of the MES students about how to help others and give back to the community

On November 6th, 3rd graders at MES had the opportunity to prepare packaged meals at Nappanee Missionary Church for Feed My Starving Children. This organization utilizes volunteers to pack meals for starving children that will be sent to 70 different countries. Students played a part in packaging 2.3 million meals during the week of November 3rd-8th. That sounds like a tremendous amount, but the fact is, over 750 children die every day of starvation. Each meal packaged costs approximately $0.25. Students collected quarters leading up to the trip to help cover the costs of the meals. This was a great opportunity for children to ‘shine’ in a non-academic setting while developing compassion for those less fortunate. This also gave the children a chance to complete a service project with people in ages ranging from 5 to 90. The lessons learned on this trip will stick with the children for years to come.

YORK Elementary Filling Empty Bowls At York Students, families, and staff members at York joined together for a soup supper on Tuesday, November 11 to address hunger in our own community. The Empty Bowls Supper was a culmination of several weeks’ worth of work at the school, during which time each student made a ceramic bowl in art class. The bowls were shaped and painted at school with the help of Mrs. Rachelle Judd, art teacher. On the night of the supper, they were all displayed and ready for students to pick up. After looking at all the beautiful bowls, families joined together for a simple meal of soup and bread provided by families and staff members. Donations were collected and all proceeds from the evening went to the Middlebury Food Pantry. Each year, York families have been able to raise nearly $1000!

SCHOOLS Heritage Intermediate Native American Project

Take a Stand! Bring a Can!

As a part of their study of Indiana History, Mrs. Mathew’s fourth grade students conducted a creative research project to learn more about our state’s Native American tribes: the Miami, Potawatomi, Delaware, Kickapoo, and Shawnee. Each student chose an Indiana region and tribe to research. Students learned about where their tribe settled and what kind of work the tribe did to survive. Some tribes were known for farming while others were known for hunting. The students also learned about the different responsibilities of the men, women, and children of the tribe. Mrs. Mathew’s students then displayed their learning by creating models to represent a typical day in the life of their chosen tribes. Students also made a brochure to explain all they learned. Great job, fourth graders!

During this year’s Red Ribbon Week, students learned about healthy bodies and how to take a stand against drugs and alcohol. They also learned the importance of helping others and being a positive member of our community. As a way to help the Middlebury community, Heritage held a canned food drive and donated the goods to the Middlebury Food Pantry. Heritage students are proud to make a positive impact by helping others!

Students are finding pictures that look like letters on the computer that are then printed. Students are painting boards and gluing pictures to tiles. Once custom orders are received, students help identify letters to spell the words and assemble them. This project is a fun fundraiser with a great product in the end. Here are some pictures of their hard work!

REMEMBER when a very touching day where people recalled a lot of great times and some sad times, too.”

What’s Next? While the church may be closed, its story continues to unfold. Curtis Bontrager recently purchased the building and plans to renovate the church into his home on one side and an apartment on the other side. Bontrager, who grew up in Middlebury, said he knows the history of Pleasant Valley Church and respects the building for what it once was. “People have used this property for many years,” he said. “If people want access to the river behind the property, they’re welcome to continue using the parking lot as long as they are respectful to the property.” Bontrager also wanted to show honor and respect toward the church’s rich heritage by making sure everything from the church could be put to good use and continue helping others. His first thought was to list the pews on Craigslist, thinking maybe another church might find them. What he didn’t anticipate was his single act creating not just a snowball effect, but an avalanche of grace.

which to hold church, but they had no furniture and very little money to spend to prepare the sanctuary. Marilyn “kept feeling this prompting to get on Craigslist,” an online buy and sell site. “I did, and there were church pews!” she said. The Joneses and Bontrager connected this past October at Pleasant Valley, where the pastors were given not only those pews, but also the lectern, the church sign, the lights, the carpet, and other items. Including the organ. “Our church had nothing in terms of furniture or fixtures. Now we have everything to begin services,” said Marilyn. Marilyn and her husband have a special message to the people who attended Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren: “Your legacy lives on. People will be changed in South Bend because of what your church continues to represent in generosity and grace.” One might say the gift goes on.
