ANNUAL REPORT

IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE A LION!

DEAR LHN FAMILY AND FRIENDS, Thank you for your support of Lutheran High North! Our school just opened its doors for the 36th year. I state “our school” because each of us, from teacher to coach, or parent to former student, or current students and parents, has (through God’s blessings) built this institution into what it is today. From the very beginning we have relied on you and your generosity to make the ministry of Lutheran High North possible. I have watched graduates of this school start on and off campus programs at major universities, ministering to the needs of the students there. LHN alumni serve as doctors, nurses, firemen, policemen, computer technicians, bankers, lawyers, teachers, mechanics, electricians, architects, and church choir members. When I walk into Lutheran elementary schools I find one, two, or more, of our former students teaching in those classrooms. Four former students are pastors of Lutheran churches in the Houston area, and numerous others are pastors scattered all over the world. In a day and time when the world needs Christian leaders the most, our school continues to produce those Christian leaders. Within this Annual Report you will see the faces of many more of those soon to be leaders. Teaching is a profession unlike many others in this sense: we often don’t see the immediate results of the efforts poured into the youth in the building. Yet, hang around long enough, and you’ll see those former students step forward fully equipped to lead from a Biblical worldview.

This year I challenge each and every one of you to give boldly and to make a commitment to give annually to LHN so we can continue to grow, equip and train the leaders of tomorrow. Almost 2000 students have moved into the world from this institution. If each graduate or graduate family would give 500 dollars it would equal nearly 1 million dollars in annual contributions. This is a number that would change LHN completely. Our school could begin to reach even more future leaders with the message of salvation through Christ. By bringing in so much more through our Annual Fund, our school will be able to apply the additional funds to faculty enhancement programs, as well as facility upgrades. This will allow us to continue to offer Excellence in Academics and Meaningful Ministry for many more years to come and to expand our ability to offer more to an ever-changing community. Five hundred dollars is a bold number, yet sometimes God calls for us to give boldly. It is my prayer that each of you will prayerfully consider giving boldly. If five hundred dollars is an easy contribution for you to give, then I encourage you to stretch, and choose a number that causes you to feel you have given boldly. We need your financial help. Why? Because Lutheran High North continues to place leaders in the world, and now more then ever before, our world needs Christian leaders in business, teaching and preaching, serving and guiding our communities. Please help us by committing to give boldly so we can continue to be the institution that builds and equips those future leaders.

Blessings,

Dana Gerard Dana Gerard Head of School

TEACHER HIGHLIGHTS LYNN EICKEMEYER Lynn Eickemeyer will celebrate 36 years of service to Lutheran High North this school year. She was the first teacher hired, and continues to minister faithfully as registrar, counselor, and math teacher. Lynn has touched the lives of over 2000 LHN graduates and countless other students and families who have spent time at our school. Lynn was recently recognized for her dedication and hard work as a Teacher of the Year by the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce. They honored her for “commitment to excellence in education in our community”. Lynn says that she is especially thankful that she is able to serve the students at Lutheran High North and their families.

DETLEF KEMNITZ 297 total wins is an accomplishment very few coaches achieve in a career, yet that is where soccer coach Detlef Kemnitz stands at the writing of this article. By the time you receive this publication he will have blown past the number 300 and moved ever so much closer to 350. Our Boys Soccer program, year in and year out, has been one of the winningest programs at Lutheran High North. Year after year after year, the boys head to the playoffs, going as deep as the Final Four numerous times. We congratulate Mr. Kemnitz and wish him the best of luck in the coming season.

JOHN SLOMCHECK Five years ago the LHN girls basketball team took the court against varsity opponents as a shell of what the program had been throughout the school’s history. Then John Slomcheck became the head coach. With an emphasis on going out to enjoy the game, John began a rebuilding of the girls basketball program. Within four short years he had accomplished the goal he set. Last year’s Girls Basketball Lady Lions competed in the TAPPS 3A championship game and placed Second in State. The furthest any previous girls basketball team had reached in years past was the Final Four. Way to Go Lady Lions!

PAUL STUENKEL 37 full length Broadway musicals and counting, including this year’s Seussical – that’s the lifetime record for producer Paul Stuenkel, who spends MUCHO time in the gym during the months of February, March and April, building sets, hanging lights and wires, directing music, and otherwise coordinating the 60+ things involved in a high school musical production. Over 1000 people attend Lutheran High North musicals each April, including 100+ senior citizens and 500+ grade school students at the two popular Thursday matinee performances. Join us on Friday or Saturday, April 29 or 30, at 7:00 pm, for Seussical.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS RYAN VOLKERS

MATTHEW HARKRIDER

Ryan Volkers graduated from Lutheran High North in 2011. He attended Blinn College in Brenham before transferring to Texas A&M University. Ryan graduated in May 2015, from Texas A&M, with his Bachelor’s degree in Construction Science. Along the way, he also received his Associates degree in Agriculture from Blinn College.

Matthew Harkrider is a graduate of LHN, class of 1993. He headed off to LSU but decided to complete his education at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. With a degree in Human Psychology and a minor in Business Management, he embarked on a career in computer software, but got hit hard when the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, followed by the events of 9/11/2011.

While at LHN, Ryan was involved with construction projects around the school. His work included building sets for spring musicals and working on the build out (complete gutting and remodeling) of the Student Learning Center (formerly known as the Resource Center). During his years at Texas A&M, he was a summer intern for Bayou Banks Classic Homes, where he worked on homes in Bellaire and in the Heights.

With lay-offs and shut downs imminent, Matthew pitched a laid off former co-worker on the idea of starting a new business venture. Working out of a house in Bellaire, he began to use the skills Mr. Terry Hynous had taught him in Economics class during his senior year at LHN, and applied the knowledge and skills gained while working for his previous employer.

CLASS OF 2011

RYAN CREDITS MR. CHUCK HALL WITH HELPING HIM DEVELOP HIS WOODWORKING AND SHOP SKILLS. HE ALSO APPRECIATES MR. STUENKEL AND ALL THAT HE TAUGHT RYAN WHILE WORKING ON MANY OF LHN’S IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. In November 2013, Ryan became an intern for Vaughn Construction in College Station. He worked on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Texas A&M Kyle Field Redevelopment Project (a $450 million dollar project) . After graduating, Ryan became a Project Engineer for Vaughn Construction and transferred to Vaughn’s Houston office. Ryan credits Mr. Chuck Hall with helping him develop his woodworking and shop skills. He also appreciates Mr. Stuenkel and all that he taught Ryan while working on many of LHN’s improvement projects. Ryan thanks these two individuals in addition to the LHN community for providing him with the opportunities to become the person he is today.

CLASS OF 1993

Alert Logic was born, catering at first to the security management needs of small and medium sized businesses, but after several years of hard work, the company built up enough momentum to become a multi-million dollar, 700 employee, global (5 countries) business, with an IPO (initial public offering) possible in the near future. Alert logic is a security as a service (SaaS) provider using software programs built by Matthew and his partner to monitor security threats to the business arm of industries. Alert Logic products are deployed in traditional data centers, corporate environments, and in the cloud and around the world.

“ IF I DIDN’T HAVE THAT FOUNDATION IN CHRIST TO KEEP ME CALM AND PERSISTENT DURING THOSE TOUGHER TIMES, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY TO GIVE UP.

Matthew credits his parents and Lutheran High North for strengthening his faith. He says that “if I didn’t have that foundation in Christ to keep me calm and persistent during those tougher times, it would have been easy to give up. It was tempting to do so, but we couldn’t do that, and I owe God so much for His steadfast love and support to give me the confidence that it would work out as He had planned.”

JULIA PACE CLASS OF 1993

Julia Pace (Wright) graduated from Lutheran High North in 1993 and began pursuing a degree in Child Psychology, but had a change of heart, switched majors, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, a Master’s of Science in Education, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Eventually, she found herself working with her parents who ran a daycare and private school and later was principal of a local charter school. Julia’s love for teaching showed as she embraced students labeled as difficult learners and taught them strategies to turn their limitations into opportunities for improvement. As 2001 approached, Julia noticed that families loved having their students in a private school, but the families struggled financially to keep their students enrolled. She and her parents discussed the need for a charter school to help provide public school education with the intimacy of a private school. Julia investigated beginning a Charter School in the area. Her first attempt at the application to receive a charter was declined. Being a determined young lady, she applied again the following year, and at the age of twenty-six, Julia was granted a charter to begin her school. She was the youngest charter school founder in Texas at the time. Many charter schools have come and gone since that time, yet Julia’s MeyerPark Elementary School continues to reach students to this very day. Many charter schools failed due to poor financial decisions. Julia credits her financial successes to another Lutheran High North graduate who serves as the Director of Business and Financial Services. Sheretta Pace (Hernandez), Julia’s sister, is responsible for all areas related to accounting and finance. Together these former LHN students help to shape tomorrow’s youth right here in Houston, Texas. Julia credits her teaching and discipline style to Mr. Brian Ryherd and Mrs. Elizabeth Krause, two teachers who had a huge impact on her life at LHN. Leading in the community and making a difference - these are qualities Lutheran High North strives to teach each of its students.

KEITH ASCHENBECK CLASS OF 1991

Pastor Keith Aschenbeck graduated from Lutheran High North in 1991 and headed off to Texas A&M to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering. Feeling pulled towards the pastoral ministry, Keith changed his degree plan and graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Psychology. Eventually he found himself at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon graduation, Pastor Aschenbeck was called to Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas. Pastor Aschenbeck accepted other “Calls” over the years, remaining in the ministry, but it is interesting to note that he found other missionary fields to expand into while preaching. He joined the Volunteer Fire Department in one town. At another point in time he joined the Army Reserve and National Guard, serving as a Chaplain for 12 years. Eventually Keith decided to serve as a Missionary to Denali Lutheran Church in Alaska. There he works with the people of several secluded areas, spreading the Gospel message to people who have never heard the message before. Pastor Aschenbeck recently came to Houston and gave chapel at his alma mater, Lutheran High North. His stories of the Gospel message held the student body captive as he talked about his ministry to the peoples of Alaska. Married, with four children, and bringing people to Christ through Word and Sacrament a long way from Texas, Pastor Aschenbeck represents the many others who to have moved into the mission field upon graduation from Lutheran High North.

Paul Stuenkel has initiated a series of monthly events for alumni, parents, and friends of Lutheran High North under the LHN.next umbrella. Last year’s events included free line dancing lessons, wine, beer, and whiskey tastings, a campus work day, dessert bake-off, and trip to New York City. This year’s offerings will continue in that same vein and include cooking and technology classes, along with a possible trip to San Francisco in 2016. Keep up with current LHN.next events and adventures at www.lutheranhighnorth.net.

rates more affordable for all families. In addition, your contribution to the Annual Fund is a 100% tax deductible way for you to support your child’s education. Your gift gives back!

Because Lutheran High North is an independent school, we receive no public funding from the local, state or federal government. Instead, we maintain our operations through tuition and fundraising. The Annual Fund is one of only three fundraising initiatives conducted by Lutheran High North. Your participation allows LHN to maintain its excellent academic reputation and add the extras that distinguish us from other private schools. We look for 100% participation – our combined effort can provide the best learning environment for our students.

GIVING IS TWO-FOLD Your gift to the Annual Fund campaign not only allows

us to meet critical needs, it also helps keep our tuition

By working together we can provide the best education for our children (in my case also grandchildren) possible in our busy culture. May God Bless These Endeavors, Chairman, Lutheran Education Association of Houston
