EVALUATING THE DIAMOND IN THE CITY OF GOLD By Shenya Erdis

SO WE TO

Speaking at the eighth annual SA Council of Shopping Centres’ (SACSC) Research Conference, Lemok Group Founder and Chief Executive Lebogang Mokubela revealed that Soweto has a buying power of R11 billion, with the number of shoppers turning out at the Maponya Mall at any given weekend being testament to this. Adding to this, Mokubela noted that the R650 million Maponya Mall in Soweto, occupying 6,500m², is one of the largest retail hubs in South Africa. It is the optimal balance of sought-after brands and the entertainment offering that drives profitability within the township market. Proper understanding of this market will likely shatter misconceptions – if you thought that a grassroots way of life was the status quo throughout and that the market was solely punctuated by entry-level brands, you've got a lot to learn about this diamond in the City of Gold.

It was just meant to be a South-Western Township, SOWETO for short... But "just a" are not fitting words when talking about this booming city within a city. In today's smartphone laden world, it is hardly surprising to see that 93.4% of households in Soweto reported to own mobile phones, while only 14.5% reported to own a landline. But is it surprising that while Soweto is largely seen, arguably incorrectly so, as a grassroots community, almost a quarter of all households watch satellite TV? Regarding technology and mobile phone usage, Soweto has kept up with the times and has 42,651 free Wi-Fi hotspots. With this mobile penetration and access to free connectivity, Soweto represents booming opportunities. Why not enable customer's to tap this ample market utilising SPAs via a campaign integrated with both digital and social media?

Soweto has not grown. It has blossomed - and it's budding still! Previously, you wouldn’t find high-end stores such as Woolworths Food contributing to the landscape, but rising demand for such stores is prevalent. This means we should widen our range of potential advertisers to include high-end marques. Brands looking to up market share should see massive potential in this previously invisible market. Let's change the way brands predominantly seek to appeal to one consumer to rather appeal to all South Africans. We are the rainbow nation after all. – Lebogang Mokubela founded the Lemok Group at the age of 25, and has grown it from a small township-based consulting company to an award-winning digital marketing firm.

SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT CAMPAIGNS It's genius really. Our sister company SDI together with ADreach Group have created a product that earns companies additional BBBEE points, specifically Supplier Development points. Any company looking to earn Preferential Procurement points can now walk away with more to smile about. If you have any clients that are currently struggling with their B-BBEE points, suggest their sponsoring an SPA campaign to advertise their black-owned supplier. Sponsoring this SPA campaign will earn them Supplier Development points and include their branding (read bragging rights).

A WORD FROM OUR CEO Despite the economic slump, the 2018/2019 period has been successful on multiple levels, and we're excited to be able share these successes with the launch of our newsletter. As we celebrate our 21st birthday, so can we celebrate the birth of The ADvisor. We are very upbeat about what this new year has in store for us, as we believe this will be a year of growth and new opportunities for everyone at ADreach Group. We appreciate your continued commitment to the ADreach family and we are confident that we can achieve new successes together. We hope you enjoy reading the new ADvisor, and welcome feedback so we can continuously improve along the way.

ADOPT-A-PROJECT FOUNDATION SCARC, WASTEPRENEURS AND MORE...

MILESTONES ACHIEVED

Waste-Preneurs It has been a very busy quarter for Waste-Preneurs with the project gaining real traction. WastePreneurs spokesperson and site manager Godfrey Phakedi has done eight radio interviews, promoting the role that the Waste-Preneurs plays in the city. Additionally, he plays a role in a five part series screened on ENCA News, representing a day in the life of a Waste-Preneur. The Waste-Preneurs project also forms an intricate part of the ADreach Group co-created SDI Initiative, where we have the goal of turning 6,000 Waste-Preneurs into economically viable and sustainable micro enterprises.

Learning Centre Since the launch of SCARC 16 years ago, it has been our dream to open a SCARC Learning Centre at Power Park. On 3 August, this became a reality. Our new Learning Centre was officially opened by the MMC for Community Development Nonhlanhla Sifumba, who stressed the importance of SCARC and the role that it plays within the community before Ward Councillor Raynette Moabi cut the ribbon to officially pronounce the Learning Centre open. The Learning Centre is a safe place of learning for all SCARC pupils to do their homework and receive tutoring in the subjects that require assistance. Once they are finished their schoolwork, they have canoe training for the day efore heading off home to their families. The tutoring is provided Goodie Tutors via a trade exchange that was done with ADreach Group in order to make this important aspect a reality.

SCARC For the first time ever within our sport, two of SCARC’s young ladies, Tinyiko Mahwaye and Thembelihle Jokozela, have been selected for a U16 team of 14 youth to represent South Africa at the International Olympic Hopefuls Canoe Regatta in Slovakia 2019. Mahwaye and Jokozela will be competing in the K1, K2 and K4 events, and are expected to perform well in the K2 event as this is their best discipline. This marks a milestone for young ladies in sport within our country.

WHAT'S UP? Whats happening in our branches?

INSIDE ADREACH It's no secret that we have some of the best co-workers on Earth. Here's what some of them have been up to...

A minute with... What has been your favorite project at ADreach? "Difficult to name one but as mentioned before, my ‘ongoing’ project is the low turnover of clients. I really try my best to lockdown a client for a long period but at the same time looking after what I have." What have you gained from working at ADreach? "Patience, negotiation, awareness, communication & sales skills (to name a few)"

Nathan Nichol (P.E sales rep) What is the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? "I once had to dress up as a banana and hand out pamphlets in Pick n Pay (I was 16 at the time) - I would say this is the most unusual/embarrassing one The most interesting one would have to be working for ADreach - I really enjoy working with different types of clients and good or bad challenges that come with that. I like to get ‘out there’ to form and maintain relationships." How did you first learn about ADreach? "I left for the UK after school for 8 years. Upon my return I noticed all these signs up on poles everywhere I applied for a job, not realizing it was for ‘those’ signs, and was fortunately offered the job. The rest is history." How do you balance your career and family? "It can be difficult at times as I do work on theory of “my workload dictates my hours” (especially ‘out of hours’) rather than my hours dictate my workload”. So there are evenings and weekends where I am working from home but I actually enjoy it - I like to be on top of my work. I try to make time for my friends and family as much as I can but I am please to say that neither work or family life is impacted negatively by the other."

What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with ADreach? "To grow my database every month, to continue being referred & maintain work standards" What is the best part about working at ADreach? "As mentioned above - the trust I am afforded, the relationships formed, the ongoing support received and the satisfaction of seeing ‘my work’ all over the city in the form of ads" What is your proudest moment? "The continual relationships that are formed. I am a firm believer that this would not happen if it wasn’t for great ongoing service, professionalism, great product and great results. A lot of clients refer me which really pleases me" What do you like most about ADreach? "The trust that I am given, the relationships I have formed (internally and externally) and the ‘coming together’ of a successful campaign" What drew you to ADreach and how has ADreach changed since? "I was looking for a job and I was lucky to offered a job at ADreach. In PE we have grown since I joined and we have expanded our product range. This makes it very interesting and challenging but at the end of the day it is very worthwhile"

Has ADreach helped you in your career? "Incredibly so, just the mere fact one has so many possible challenges and obstacles of providing the client with the best service and solutions. I take great pride in forming a lasting business relationship that often turns into a personal one"

If you could pick one aspect of ADreach to base a book on, what would it be? "The art of seeing a ‘nothing’ inquiry become a multiyear ongoing relationship. The positive effect of our products and the success stories behind it" If you could switch your job with anyone else at ADreach, whose job would you want? "Not accounts . I'd enjoy the development side of the company. I also enjoy the physical side of it, too so perhaps the installation team" What advice do you have for prospective ADreach candidates? "I can only comment on the sales function but I would say - work clever, work hard, put in the extra effort to actually ‘know’ your client, know their inventory and do all you can to impress and/or maintain the relationship" What three words describe ADreach? "Energetic, success and everywhere." What is the most challenging at ADreach? "From a sales point of view, I would say site availability, Perfekta contracts and AssetSphere sometimes "
