Thank you to our 2011 C apital C ampaign Supporters Since reopening in 2004, after a massive renovation and a grassroots fundraising effort, The Englert Theatre has welcomed over 365,000 attendees. A true success story, the renovated Englert has hosted over 2,000 performances from 2004 to November of 2013, including local and nationally-known live music, comedy, theater, dance, movies, readings, and community endeavors. All of this unfolds in our beautiful venue, located in the heart of downtown Iowa City’s cultural district. In preparation for the centennial of this national historic landmark, we conducted a capital campaign to consolidate our mortgage and better secure a stable future. We would like to honor our major donors below. Welcome to The Englert Theatre! Welcome to The Englert Theatre! A decade ago, a group of concerned citizens drew up a preliminary “Save the Englert” plan on the back of a cocktail napkin. So much has happened since those modest yet inspired beginnings of the new Englert Theatre: We have grown to become an essential element in Iowa City’s arts and culture landscape. Our historic building is 102 years old and the nonprofit that runs it turns 10 in 2014. We remain dedicated to programming that offers everyone a reason to pass through our doors at least once a year. Furthermore, we are committed to deepening our relationship with the local community. We have already charged into this 2014 with wonderful events—Jazz musician Jon Batiste changed lives with an unforgettable performance in January that featured an audience of all ages; our inaugural artist-in-residence Nat Baldwin engaged our local community for a week as he composed music, worked with high school students, and held a special performance recital. We are able to build and expand on such programs through the support of our loyal patrons and our “Friends of the Englert” donor group. Over the next year, look for premier performances in our theater by legends like Philip Glass as well as introductions to important emerging artists through our Intimate Series where patrons sit on stage within feet of the performers in a unique and riveting environment. Continue to visit our 2nd floor Douglas and Linda Paul Gallery, which features acclaimed and emerging visual artists. Keep an eye on our growing Family Programming Series, which will provide more exciting experiences for young folks and their friends and families. We’re happy to be a part of this community and look forward to great success in years to come. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Andre Perry & the staff of The Englert Theatre

Philip Glass Thursday, April 3rd, 2014 - 7:30 p.m. Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times.

Paula Poundstone Friday, April 18th, 2014 - 8 p.m. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me.” She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany, with the Boston Globe, to write: “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.”

William Fitzsimmons Tuesday, May 6th, 2014 - 8 p.m. William Fitzsimmons is equal parts songwriter and psychotherapist, creating captivating music, which melds depravity, honesty and autobiography into a counter-intuitive seamless whole. He is perhaps best-known for his songs “Passion Play” and “Please Don’t Go,” which aired during episodes of the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” His songs contain rich folk music, ranging from the stark and acoustic to the voluminous and electronic.

Judy Collins Thursday, June 19th, 2014 - 8 p.m. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years, Judy Collins is best-known for evocative folk music of the 1960s and ‘70s, including her Grammy-winning album, Wildflowers, which launched a mega-hit from a rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Collins has several top-ten hits, Grammy nominations, and gold- and platinum-selling albums to her credit.

Hot Tuna Saturday, July 19th, 2014 - 8 p.m. From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist, and Jack Casady, bassist, the founders and core members of Hot Tuna. The duo play acoustic jazz, bluegrass, folk, and traditional blues music that excites and captivates audiences. 13

The History of the Englert The Englert Theatre opened on September 26, 1912. William Englert and his wife Etta built the theater to rival the finest stages throughout the Midwest. The theater replaced a livery stable. Vaudeville touring acts performed at the Englert, where townspeople and students filled its 1,071 seats. In addition to live stage acts, the Englert boasted high quality projection equipment for showing three-reel films. The Englert family lived on the second floor of the theater building and provided rooms for the performers on the third floor. In 1920, William Englert died of a cerebral hemorrhage in his bedroom at only 46 years old. Following William’s death, Etta enlisted A.H. Blank and his partner Nate Chapman to oversee operation of the Englert, but Nate died in 1925, leaving his wife Dora with 2 small children, Ansel, age 10 (destined to be a local District Court Judge and later involved in the Englert management) and Marvin, age 4. Dora retained a partnership with Blank, and her brother Al Davis became manager of the Englert, a position he held until he retired. A woman ahead of the times, Dora was always involved in the operation of the theater. 19

In later days Dora’s great-grandchildren Nathan, Katherine and Barbara Chapman, would hear Dora tell the story of witnessing the massive February 13, 1926 fire which nearly destroyed the Englert. Historical accounts place both Dora and Etta at the scene, watching in horror and barking instructions at firemen as the blaze tore through the roof. The fire caused $125,000 in damage to a building that cost $60,000 to build in 1912. Etta Englert and her new husband, James Hanlon, in cooperation with A.H. Blank and Dora Chapman (Central States of Des Moines) immediately worked to rebuild the Englert, tapping into the prevailing tastes in the 1920s for revival styles. During this era, large and ornate movie palaces were being built in cities across the United States and Iowa City would not be surpassed. nate & dora chapman around 1920.

The new Englert operated for decades as a joint venture. Etta Englert Hanlon and her second husband continued to reside in the building, while Dora Chapman and her brother Al Davis managed the theater in conjunction with A. H. Blank of Des Moines. Years later, Central States Theater Corporation of Des Moines in partnership with the Chapman family operated the theater and supervised its division into two small-screen theater spaces in the 1980s. In the 1970s and 1980s the Englert interior was modernized with gypsum board, paneling, carpeting, and acoustic ceilings. By 1999 the owners of the Englert finally decided to close the theater and sell the aging building. It was purchased by a bar owner, who had plans to turn it into a nightclub. Not wanting to see the theater disappear, a group of concerned citizens persuaded the City of Iowa City to purchase the theater and hold it in trust until funds could be raised. For the next 5 years, this group of citizens mobilized to purchase the theater from the City of Iowa City and rebuild the Englert as a community cultural center. They began the “Save the Englert” campaign to raise the funds necessary to renovate the theater to its former grandeur. Hundreds of local businesses and individuals contributed countless hours and millions of dollars to bring the theater back to life. Their contributions are forever recognized on the large Capital Campaign plaque in our lobby, on the nameplates on the seats around you, and on numerous signs around the building. Finally, on December 3, 2004, a community’s dream became a reality when The Englert Theatre reopened for live performance for the first time in more than 60 years. Today, The Englert Theatre stands as a testament to all who believed in its recreation. 20

It all happens here...

...and it’s all because of you. Diverse cultural experiences... Local & national performers... A vibrant community...

With diverse programming filling nearly every week of our schedule, 2012 was truly a landmark year for the Englert Theatre. Ten years out from the “Save the Englert” campaign, Iowa City’s only historic theatre has presented over 2,700 artists for over 375,000 patrons, through a combination of local, national, and international programming. As a non-profit theater, ticket sales and other earned income cover only a portion of our costs. The support of individuals and businesses who share our values helps make up the difference, allowing us to continue to meet the artistic and cultural needs of our community. Your membership in Friends of the Englert helps make these things possible: - More than 300 events a year - World-famous entertainment here in town - Lower ticket prices - and in some cases, free events - Collaborations among local performers - Reduced rates for other non-profit organizations and community theater groups - Preservation of the landmark historic building - An art gallery and meeting space

You paid what?! The ticketing re-sale market is huge and growing larger every day. As The Englert Theatre has grown to host more nationally and world known artists, we have caught the attention of these “re-sellers.” This is a buyer beware type of market and we highly recommend that you purchase tickets to Englert Theatre events directly through The Englert Theatre Box Office or via The Englert Theatre website or via our online seller: Midwestix. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee or refund any purchases made through other sites. We work hard to keep events as affordable as possible and we never authorize the sale of tickets over the advertised ticket price.

“the thing i love about music is all the different people i get to meet. it’s great to talk to the lifelong musician or the kid just picking up guitar. No matter how long you’ve been playing, we’re all in the same community. We all share a

creating music

Who knows, that kid with the new guitar might just be the next Hendrix.”

INTRODUCING THE NEW

ENGLERT FAMILY SERIES At The Englert Theatre, oversized insects and amphibians engage in acrobatics. Outdated kitchen appliances transform into high-tech, kaleidoscopic movement machines. Enchanting puppets gather together to discover the happy truths of profound love. The wonder and limitless possibility of live performance promises to dazzle with the Englert Family Series. Designed to be enjoyed by audience members from 4 to 104, the Englert’s Family Series aims to provide low-cost, high-value live performance experiences and foster a lifelong love of the arts for Corridor children and the adults in their lives.

Supported in part by The Raymond and Janet Bywater Family Endowment Fund

UPCOMING FAMILY SERIES EVENTS Visit englert.org for more information & additions

FROGZ

MARCH 4, 2014 - 6:30 p.m. Upcoming Family Series productions are sure to garner praise. In Imago Theatre’s “FROGZ!”, movement, mask and mime combine to create a spectacularly fun program filled with creative critters both fantastic and touchingly human in a performance that The New York Times said “left everyone...feeling giggly.” 61

lightwire theater MARCH 12, 2014 - 6:30 p.m.

Lightwire Theatre - an “America’s Got Talent” semifinalist - uses electroluminescent crayon-like creatures to light up a darkened stage in astonishing displays of visual storytelling. Puppetry, neon-lit costumes, and mystifying choreography make Lightwire Theatre a must-see theatrical experience.

love

MAY 23, 2014 - 6:30 p.m. MAY 24, 2014 - 2:00 p.m. Australia’s Terrapin Puppet Theater presents “Love.” The charming, larger-thanlife characters, stories, and imagery create an amazingly multi-layered piece of visual theater - it could even be one of those rare shows that burn brightly forever in the memories of the young children who are lucky enough to see it.

The Englert believes in the transformational power of performing arts experiences, and is committed to ensuring access for all Corridor families. Admission for “Love” is only $5, and $10 discounted tickets for “FROGZ!” and “Lightwire Theater” are available to Friends of the Englert. In the future, the Englert hopes to continue setting Family Series admission as low as possible, with the goal of making many shows free. To receive discounted tickets to “FROGZ!” and “Lightwire Theater”, as well as to support Englert endeavors like the Family Series, you can become a Friend of the Englert. Visit bit.ly/englertfriends to learn more about the exclusive benefits that come with being a Friend. 62
