22 Research, Special Problems and VIP Classes Students may use up to six hours of research (2699 or 4699), special problems (4903) or Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) courses (ECE 2811, 381X and 481x) for free elective credit. If students are doing both VIP courses and research/special projects, then students are allowed use up to 9 credits towards free electives, with no more than 6 hours in either research/special problems or VIP. Research, special problems and VIP classes cannot be used as an ME elective. Free Electives The ME curriculum requires 15 hours of free electives. At least 9 of the 15 hours must be at the 2000 level or above. Four of these 9 hours at the 2000 level or above may be satisfied with one of the following: BIOL 1510, BIOL 1520 or CHEM 1212K. Free electives may not duplicate material taken in other classes. For example, MGT 2250, Management Statistics, will not count as a free elective because the B.S.M.E. degree requires a different statistics class. Up to 6 hours of research and special problems, 2699/4699/4903, from any department may be used as free elective credit. Class Withdrawals There is a restricted withdrawal policy for several Woodruff School courses. These are usually laboratory or other courses that require special departmental resources. Other courses with limited enrollments might be added to this list, and they will be so designated during registration. The courses are: ME/CEE/AE 1770 ME 2110 ME 3057 ME 4056 ME 4182

Introduction to Engineering Graphics and Visualization Creative Decisions and Design Experimental Methodology Laboratory Mechanical Engineering Systems Laboratory Capstone Design

A withdrawal from one of the laboratory courses after registration closes will be granted only in the event of serious illness or comparable circumstance beyond the student’s control. Overlay Areas Global perspective and ethics are required overlay areas for all students. These classes must be taken as part of the B.S.M.E. curriculum. These classes can be taken as free electives, economics, social science electives or humanities electives. These classes are not intended to be taken above the required curriculum hours, but rather as part of the required curriculum. AP, IB and transfer credits can be used to satisfy these two overlay areas. The classes that can be used to satisfy the ethics requirement are at: www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/ethics.php The classes that can be used to satisfy the global perspective requirement are at: www.catalog.gatech.edu/students/ugrad/core/gp.php
