Butzel Family Center

Fall 2018 Group project with Mary Ruth Murphey, Sarah Johnson, and Camila Peres
The Butzel Family Center is a service project for Detroit, Michigan. The class is led by Carl Matthews. This center is important to the community, the city wants this to be a more desirable location for people of all ages to come. Currently it mainly serves the ages of 6-17 and the older community. The goals for Butzel were to introduce transparency in the space to bring in more natural light and to draw the community towards the center, use color to bring more life into the space, and create a more open and welcoming space. Everyday the Butzel kitchen serves food from 11am until whenever the food is gone, every three weeks food is given out to the community starting at 6am to whenever the groceries are gone. Visiting this center, the community and employees that utilize the space are very much family.
The Butzel Play field in the back of the family center is underutilized. The city is planning on creating a connection from the neighborhoods behind the center to create an all around more welcoming building.

Front + Back Entries The existing entrance has railings that aren’t welcoming, the proposed new entrance, on the right page, the stairs and railing are proposed to be cleared, where there is an entry point from any angle, rather than the left or right of the building. There is also added color to the mullions and railing to bring life to the brick and concrete facade. The back entry on the left page is currently a fire exit, but is proposed to be a connecting point to the neighborhoods behind the playfield. The employees want a community garden in this space and to use as another entry point.

Plan + Materials UP
Cost was a large part in material considerations. Because of the large scale cost with the spandrel panels and the front entry step re-design, paint is the main material option to give more color and life to the space.

First Floor Plan
The entrance is currently heavy, dark and without wayfinding. For the proposed entrance, the balcony is white, and the desk is re-designed to mimic the color and shape of the balcony to not distract from the proposed wayfinding that is painted on the brick walls surrounding the desk.

The atriums are the connecting points to all of the spaces and where events happen. Currently, the atriums are heavy and feel lifeless. To make this a more energetic space, brighter colors and materials were added to the columns, and the fins. Murals are added in the proposed images of popular Detroit sports teams and Ford cars on the ceiling above to bring life to the entire space, not only the occupied space.

The atrium seating is made out of plywood and is multi-use. At 18” people can sit on it, during events they can be stacked to use as tables rather than using folding tables. The angle of the bench is based on the existing fins within the space that have the angle.

Auditorium
Everyday, food is served in the auditorium from 11am to whenever the food is gone. This space is large and dull. Proposed color will be added to shorten the space and add color to the floor. Windows are also added to brighten the interiors. UP

The Link
Fall 2018 Group project with visiting Architecture student, Zulfiia Kamalova
The desires for The Link were to create a food nexus that is a linking point for all of Fayetteville, Arkansas. To create a space for the community to come together and learn about food. The main source of food comes from the vertical gardens that are throughout the entire interior and exterior spaces. The main building is a restaurant that uses only foods from the interior vertical garden. A technology point is in place to help people understand how the vertical gardens work as a space and a place of growth.

Relations to site The site is in the middle of the Fayetteville Historic Square, the University of Arkansas, Wilson Park, and several neighborhoods. Fayetteville City Planning is working towards making the downtown area more walkable.

Naturally good Naturally Good is one of six food stands that makes the food directly in front of the consumer. There is also a grab and go section within each stand. The food comes from the vertical gardens, either inside near the stands or from one of the exterior gardens. The interior gardens, in addition to providing food, creates partitions withing the large space.

The plan contains the Social Hub, which is parallel to College Ave. with entrances on both sides and three entrances on the front to create a porous space where consumers can come in and out to gather with friends or meet new people. In addition to this space, there is a market, containing food from the gardens, a teaching kitchen, development point, and multiple vertical gardens.

HIKULI SPA Spring 2018
Hikuli is a spa based off of reseach done on one of the original tribes of Arkansas. The Quapaw tribe participated in the Peyote Religion, which was used to see the Great Spirit. Most of the time, using the hallucinogen was to take physical pain away and was a way of leaving reality. The spa is based on what they used Peyote forto leave reality and for healing.

layers of shoe straps
ASSEMBLAGE Fall 2017
Assemblage started with the analysis of a shoe. The idea was to take important qualities from the shoe and create an assemblage that had at least three materials and three joinery methods. From the wedge shoe drawn to the top right, I took the layering of the fabric, the voids from the cut outs on the side and the embedded footprint from the sole and created the model on the right. The idea was to show the footprint within the layers of the acrylic fins and wood center.

SHOE HEADQUARTERS Fall 2017
This project is derived from the Assemblage project. The concept was to take key components from the assemblage and use them in the office space. The model to the right comes from the wrapping of the shoe around the foot, keeping it secure. The entrance to the space acts as a display to the new shoe designs. While a customer is being guided to a meeting room, they are able to see all of the new designs before stepping foot into the main office space, that is to the right.

PHOTOGRAPHY I have done photography for a few Fayetteville local businesses, such as Garden Living, The Grounds at Garden Living, Maude Boutique, and Impressions Boutique. At Garden Living and The Grounds my focus was on product photography, and creating images for social media that made patrons excited to be there.
