Media Talking Points 

Blockchain Pilot Overview o Through its pilot, the alliance has demonstrated that collaborative use of blockchain technology can help improve the efficiency of updating directories people use to select health care providers. o The first phase of the pilot focused on a cross-section of records for providers based in Texas, approximately 1,900 provider records per alliance member. o This scope was broad enough to ensure a sizable overlap of records across alliance members, but not so broad that it over-extended operational resources. o As we reviewed our shared data we looked for “odd man out” cases – those in which a few members had the same data and one member had different data, making them the odd man out.

Findings and Relevance, To Date o The alliance members found we can locate and update certain types of inaccurate information faster than we would on our own. o The alliance used its first phase of the pilot to identify up to 88% of necessary demographic data corrections across the Alliance members’ shared data for two of the most common errors in care provider directories:  inactive locations, which refer to sites of service where care providers were once seeing patients but are no longer doing so, and  address mismatches, which occur when health care organizations have differing addresses for the same care provider.

Current Work o The pilot is expanding to provider directories in Colorado, Florida and New York. o The alliance is working on coordinating outreach efforts to avoid duplicating efforts to contact the same provider. Each alliance member calls specific care providers and shares resulting data updates with the other alliance members.  This has the potential to reduce the number of calls each alliance member needs to make to providers in their networks and the number of times care providers are asked to confirm their information.

Future Work o The alliance will be testing a business model that involves delegating updates for certain records to third-party companies and an economic incentive model designed to fund and sustain the future infrastructure and operations of the blockchain functionality. o These steps will help lay the foundation to ultimately support a nationwide rollout of a health care provider data exchange and future use cases for the Alliance. o The alliance plans to identify possible next use cases to explore this year.

New Members o The alliance recently added five new members, helping bring key technical expertise, data expansion and patient/consumer insights to support the Alliance as it develops new use cases for blockchain technology. o New members include Centene, Cognizant, CorVel, Prime Health Services, and Providence.  Centene: 3

Cognizant: As a services member, Cognizant will provide a toolkit to help alliance members connect to the blockchain, along with consulting and integration services. These services will enable members to input and edit new data, making it quickly accessible to multiple health plans.  CorVel: CorVel joined the Alliance for the opportunity to leverage technology and shared resources to improve its provider data. CorVel is contributing provider records primarily utilized by the Property & Casualty market. CorVel represents a different market from many of the Alliance members.  Prime Health Services: As a technology-focused managed care company with over 900,000 providers, Prime Health Services understands the importance of accurate provider information and believes in the power of blockchain to provide better service to patients.  Providence: The alliance is currently accepting new member applications, especially from health systems that are interested in testing use cases that are of benefit to patients. 
