I

f I told you that part of my Bragg Jam was spent defending a possible home intrusion somewhere in the Shirley Hills area of Macon with a cab driver and a 50. Cal Desert Eagle handgun, you’d be wrong not to believe me. While many were shaking their behinds to Mixmaster Mike I was establishing a beachhead with an overzealous taxi driver at a friends house who had a “late night knocker” going on with her new baby inside and her husband out of town. We didn’t’ find anyone, but we almost certainly scared the hell out of the neighbors. I can’t tell you

how wonderful Bragg Jam was, not having to run around and put out fires during it. And the board, which has its fair share of newbies, did a great job putting the event on. While numbers probably won’t be announced for a few more weeks yet, I think it’s safe to say that this years’ Bragg Jam event was up there with the best of them and you can bet they are already thinking about how to top it next year. Be thankful there are people like them among you. And to the baby I potentially saved, you can thank me later.

It was so fun I almost forgot to sing “Happy Birthday.” I just downloaded Donald Ray Pollack’s new book which has been pretty damn good so far. If Pollock’s powerful short story collection Knockemstiff, named after his real life hometown, was a punch to the jaw, his follow-up, The Devil all the Time, a novel set in the violent soul-numbing towns of southern Ohio and West Virginia, feels closer

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

My mother just turned 70 years old, and we went to our favorite local restaurant the Downtown Grill to celebrate. A lot of relatives who I hadn’t seen in a long time were there, some of whom were really close with our cousin, Sherriff Buford Pusser. He’s the guy portrayed in the movie Walking Tall, and though he was of very questionable characther, he was one mean son of a bitch. After the Dixie Mafia had killed his wife and shot him in the face with a shotgun, all four gunmen and the guy who paid for the hit were found dead. Pusser was never

to a mule’s kick, and how he draws these folks and their inevitably hopeless lives without pity is what the kick’s all about. Willard Russell is back from the war, on a Greyhound bus passing through Meade, Ohio, in 1945 when he falls for a pretty waitress in a coffee ship. He has a son, Arvin, but is still haunted by the Pacific. And while Willard teaches his only son some serious survival skills (“You just got to pick the right time,” he tells him about getting back at bullies. “They’s a lot of no-good sonofabitches out there"), happiness is still elusive. I love the South.

8/13 TASTE OF THE ARTS: ANNUAL CHEF TASTING & SILENT AUCTION TO KICK OFF FALL ARTS SEASON

T

he Macon Arts Alliance and Capital City Bank are proud to present the Taste of the Arts: The Producers on Saturday, August 13, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the beautifully restored Terminal Station in historic downtown Macon. This fabulous annual event kicks off the new season of arts and culture in the midstate. This year we take you backstage with the arts, with Celebrity Chefs representing more than 30 arts and cultural organizations serving up their best savory or sweet dishes. The silent auction features original art, vacation packages, hot event tickets throughout the Southeast, and luxury services and items you may bid on. Each year at Taste of the Arts we honor champions of the arts and cultural community. This year’s honoree is Mrs. Nancy Brown Cornett, founding Executive Director of Macon Arts Alliance.

Additionally each arts and cultural organization will select their own honoree whose contributions have made an indelible impact on the community. The extraordinary dedication of these “Producers” inspired this year’s Broadway theme and their work to promote and grow the arts in Central Georgia is ample reason to celebrate. These celebrity chefs will serve up their best “sweet” or “savory” dishes for you to sample, staged creatively around the theme of their organization. Music sets the scene for attendees as they enjoy complimentary drinks and bid on fabulous vacations, original art, and hot event tickets in the silent auction. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online at Macon Arts.org or by calling or visiting The Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance, 478-743-6940.

NIGHTLIFE | the city’s best bets when the sun goes down

THE URBAN EXPLORER BY SEAN PRITCHARD

P

ost Bragg Jam was more of a blur then I expected. I've spent the past 7 months preparing for one single day, and the moment it was over I was left wondering what I would do with my time. So, I spent a few hours searching around on Facebook, reading Out & About, Macon Magazine, and the 11th Hour and was quickly reminded that Macon is a town that really never sleeps (despite what people might think). You just have to know where to look and be able to keep up. That all being said, I'm fairly sure I'll be taking part in all these great local events in the next two weeks. On Friday, get your earplugs out and lace up your dancing boots because two of the largest shows featuring hardcore, metal, and grind, plus tons of other genres will be Downtown. At The 567, you can check out national touring acts Greeley Estates on tour with The Plot In You and 7 other bands, all for only $13.00. This is sure to be a huge show so if it's up your alley, be here. If you want to check out something a bit different though, head down to Central City Skatepark for Summer Fest, which features over 12 bands from all around the region. Both shows will be loud, sweaty, and packed so get there early and plan to stay late! The following night will be something completely different but possibly as entertaining. Macon Arts Alliance hosts their annual celebration "Taste of the Arts" at the Terminal Station. The event features "celebrity" chefs, a stocked bar, a silent auction and much more. I missed out on Taste of the Arts last year and I'm not going to make the same mistake this time around. I hear it's one of the liveliest parties in town. Get your fill of food and drink Saturday night but remember that one of Macon's fastest growing events Second Sunday at Sunset starts at 7:00pm in Washington Park. This month Back City Woods (who will be playing with Sequoyah Prep School for a special Double Bill on Sept. 3rd at The Hummingbird) provides the soundtrack to your evening. Remember that you can bring a picnic bas-

r u o H y Happ Sequoyah Prep School play the Bird on Sept. 3rd ket of your own or purchase a lunch for $5.00 at the park. I urge you not to consume more then you can manage because as soon as Second Sunday is over, the entire park (yes, I mean it) will be migrating to The Rookery as local OG (some might say that) Roger Riddle will be hosting a party alongside Macon's Shawty Slim, who just returned from a tour in ASIA with B.O.B. ! As all the schools start back in the next week, Macon will receive a burst of energy and activity that we haven't felt all summer. I know that everyone at Mercer will be thrilled at the newest additions in the College Corridor in the lower level of the new lofts (Designer Tan, Fountain of Juice, and Margaritas). With the return of students come even more events for you to choose from and a larger, more diverse crowd for you to socialize with. I'm sure everyone will be busy the next week with preparing for the year to come but that's not to say there aren't fun things to do around town. Without a doubt, I'll be headed to The 567 to catch the latest tunes from Macon's favorite songstress Oh Dorian as she takes the stage with locals Whale Bone and two up-and-coming Atlanta acts, Oryx & Crake and Spirits and The Melchizedek Children. Oh Dorian will be playing a set of brand new songs, as will Whale Bone so that's more then enough reason to make it out and support local and regional talent.

Name a song you’ve listened to in the past 24 hours. A live recording of my Saturday night set. What was the first album you bought with your own money? 'The 50 Pound Dub Plate' by Dean Brown. Its available at our local shows and will soon be available @ reverbnation & CD Baby. Why? Support independent music, innovative original artists and Macon music! Name a band our readers should know about. Deep roots reggae because I see the need to fill a void, and I want to reawaken something ancient in all of us. But its obvious that I love all kinds of music and its embraced by all music lovers. The music becoming even more organic, fiery and unpredictable but always timeless and anchored by great arrangements and catchy songwriting and could go electronic at any moment and does every now and then. What band T Shirt do you wear proudly? I am in need of cool T-Shirts and would wear anybody's shirt. But I actually being wearing the 'STAY SUPERIOR' T-shirt by Tommy Superior who plays guitar with me, records his own projects and tours with several local artists including Floco Torres. Where do you like to hang out in Macon? My favorite hang out spot in Macon is downtown, and then the Ocmulgee National Park.

THE SKEETERZ @ AP’S

FRI. AUG 12

Magnificent Bastard @ Friday Fest, Third Street Park

6-9 pm. Free event! Dine, shop and sip downtown and enjoy a free concert in Third Street Park. Mag Tard writes and plays original songs of the Rock and Roll variety right here from Macon, Georgia. Chris is the lead vocalist and plays the electric guitar. Justin plays bass and has his own band Trendlenberg. Vinnie is lefthanded and often likes to release his rage on a backwards drumset. And last but not least Dan plays the sax, while Miles is on the drums and Justin on the bass.

Soulshine @ The Hummingbird

oulshine, Macon Ga's Allman Brothers Tribute Band, was founded by musician Stan Killingsworth to recreate the awe and majesty of the Allman Brothers live performances. By combining the talents of some Middle Georgia's finest musicians, Soulshine, has received praise from fans and critics alike. Not only do they perform the more popular Allman Brothers tunes, they perform the more lengthy and experimental pieces. Soulshine's performances are characterized by blistering guitar solos, soulful singing, a tight rhythm section, and wild improvisation

Back ‘N Black @ Wild Wing Café

Back N Black are on a mission. These bad boys have one goal. To drive the adrenaline fueled hellride that is an AC/DC concert right up in your...face. Angus ripping through his solos in his schoolboy uniform (UNTIL THE STRIPTEASE!), Brian's larynx shredding vocals, Malcolms sledgehammer riffs and the clockwork thunder of Cliff and Phil's relentless rhythm section. These boys deliver the goods with... a set list that spans over 3 decades served up loud, hot and nasty! All the favorites

OH DORIAN @ 567 GALLERY STAGE from Back In Black, Highway To Hell, The Razors Edge , Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, For Those About To Rock We Salute You...

SAT. AUG 13

Echospeed @ The Hummingbird

When you need your 80’s fix and only the best will do, echospeed is the band you need! Playing the hits of the 80’s for nearly 20 years. The Godfather of 80’s cover bands. Simple enough.... No costumes, wigs or gimmicks!

The Skeeterz @ AP’s Hideaway

Collectively, The Skeeterz have played extensively throughout Georgia. They have honed their craft and operate as a very tight, nearly flawless unit. They leave excited, happy fans wherever they play. The band also just won the “Battle of the Baddest Bands” to win a coveted spot at September’s Heroes Music Fest.

FRI. AUG 19

Scott Little Band @ Friday Fest, Third Street Park

6-9 pm. Free event! Dine, shop and sip downtown and enjoy a free concert in Third Street

SCOTT LITTLE BAND @ FRIDAY FEST

Park. This storytelling four piece band has more than succeeded in their goal of making real music. Pulling from influences such as Haggard and Parsons, they make music the old-fashioned way, they live it…then they play it.

Tokyo Spa @ Billy’s Clubhouse

TOKYO SPA is a group of seasoned musicians playing an eclectic mix of rock cover songs covering the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and NOW. Everything from Peter Gabriel to 311, Billy Idol to U2, Pink Floyd to The White Stripes!! They're a great party band; and a happy ending is guaranteed.

SAT. AUG 20

Oh Dorian @ The 567 with Whale Bone Oh Dorian seemingly crept out of

nowhere, moving quickly from tiny dive bars to famed listening rooms like Eddie’s Attic and opening gigs for acts like The Indigo Girls and Modern Skirts. The power of her voice is matched only by her seriousness and dedication as an artist. At first sound, she’s as morose a singer as we’ve ever heard. Then comes her laugh, boomingly loud like a human foghorn, and we knew for sure she’s our kind of people.

certainly learned some valuable lessons from the most recent City elections. First and foremost, I am grateful not to have had an opponent since that would have made me part of a divisive and tension-charged several weeks of campaigning. Second, I may need to hang up my hat as a political prognosticator. Citing the racial breakdown of registered voters in the City, I predicted that, after election day, Robert Brown would be in a run-off with Robert Reichert and Robert Brown would end up as Mayor. Of course I also predicted that two incumbent Council members would lose their seats. Only one did while two others came close. So what happened to Robert Brown? First, he told me afterwards that he had no one to blame but himself. He didn’t resort to allegations of conspiracies or vote-buying or convoluted explanations that point the finger at someone else. In short, he was gracious in defeat. I had political friends in Atlanta who called me on election night for some kind of explanation of what happened to Robert Brown who has, for decades, been the best

ake a big deep breath Middle Georgia! Tuesday, August 16th, the day of the highly anticipated runoff in two hotly contested races that can mean the life or death of Macon and Bibb County is finally upon us. As I have said in previous columns, I as the First Vice-Chair of the Bibb County Republican Party cannot endorse any of the candidates that are running as our party does not have a horse in these races. We do have a common goal with the community in large: Government that is run ethically and morally correct for our people no matter which party they happen to belong to. Two of the candidates running have shown themselves to have the common interest at heart and have shown they can cross party lines in a cooperative manner: Mayor Robert Reichert and former City Council President Miriam Paris. Further, they have run their individual campaigns in this cycle based on facts, agenda and platform, not on fear, hate and dishonesty as the other two candidates have: former Mayor C. Jack Ellis and former State Representative David Lucas. Now in

defense of Mr. Lucas, it has been his wife Elaine who has been his hatchetwoman, spewing hatred and false innuendo continuously. (If he had a shred of dignity, he would distance himself from her statements.) Ellis on the other hand has been spreading his own propaganda, claiming that the city finances under his watch were in his words “nothing short of genius”. Hmmmm….I guess it could be considered “genius” in the sense of a plan devised by Al Capone or Bernie Madoff. Quite honestly the fact that he thinks that since when he started in office with $28 million in the general fund and left with $16 million is nothing short of genius should in itself disqualify him from office. Thomas Thomas, Macon’s Chief Administrative Officer also states that when Ellis took office the fund balance of the city, which is the sum total of the city’s assets minus the liabilities, was $10.6 million dollars in 2000 and was in the hole $3.5 million dollars by the time Ellis whisked himself away to Ghana. To this, Ellis says Mr. Thomas is “dead wrong. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” So the people of Macon are supposed to take your word for it Jack? Fool us once…shame on you….Fool us twice…shame on us. Fool us three times we’re all just fools. In past articles I’ve addressed the fact that

Although money alone won’t elect a candidate (remember Steve Forbes and Mitt Romney?), now the lack of money will make it almost impossible (e.g., Ralph Nader and Dennis Kucinich). One of my neighbors told me that I must be embarrassed to have backed Robert Brown after he didn’t even make the runoff, and I replied honestly that I don’t offer my

we, the Bibb County GOP, have been accused, duty and step up to the plate and run for public primarily by Mrs. Lucas and former Mayor office. But let us look at why people are hesiEllis, of being the prime motivators and money tant to put their necks on the line. Most people behind the candidacies of Mayor Reichert, think a Republican can’t win but in a few Miriam Paris and also Chris Horne. ragg Jam was debaucherous and depraved. In a good way. I woke up Saturday morning (early afternoon) with a phone full of texts instructing me not to put the pictures I had taken up online. The night before had been the kick off party for all the sponsors and contributors of the event. For me the night had been a blur of catered food, Newcastle and mischievous antics. The highlight of the event had been the sexy smooth music provided by Yacht Rock Schooner. Later that afternoon I had lunch with DJ VH1 at The Rookery, we'd met the night before. He was an interesting guy, I found out he has a degree in literature and writes for Esquire. I also learned the phrase "disco nap." The rest of my day was spent running around taking pictures of the various musical acts that Bragg Jam brought us. I felt important because I had an all access pass with "official event photographer" written on the back in blue sharpie. I started the day off with Delta Saints at the Capitol and then followed it up with the amazing line up at The 567. The Delta Saints were an astounding mix of blue-eyed soul and dive bar blues. I'd love to see more music like this come to Macon, I'm actually in the works to book Atlanta Neo-Cabaret darlings Blair Crimmins and the Hookers sometime in the future. If you saw the Saints and liked what they were doing check out the return of Megan Jean and the KFB at The Rookery on the 26th. In following with their flawless record of booking amazing indie coolness, The 567 was the place to be for Bragg Jam if you were with your family or just wanted to hear the future of Indie Rock. In attendance was my favorite local singer-songwriter Amy Godwin as well as Nashville's Parachute Musical. I got some great shots from The 567, but couldn't even get in the door at The Hummingbird. The place was packed! The day had been relatively relaxed, I was gearing up for that evening and I was probably going to need a disco nap… If you're into Hip-Hop, like real HipHop, like robots and sneakers and turntables and New York Fat Caps on Krylon Icy Grape spray paint; then you know who Mix Master Mike is. If you don't then you missed the absolute dopest thing to go down in Macon this year. The greatest turntablist since Grandmaster Flash, the backing DJ for the Beastie Boys played at Asylum. I should take this moment to thank Jamie Weatherford for actually talking Mike into letting me on stage during his set. Mike's contract stated that only security was allowed on stage during his performance, but somehow Jamie worked his magic and at the last minute got Mix Master Mike to let me take pictures from the stage. I almost fell out. Then Mike dropped "We Are Your Friends" by Justice and I almost passed out. It was on the top 5 of the "Craziest Things That Ever Happened in Dylan's Life" list. The set was insane, the whole thing was the perfect end to an amazing day. After Mike's set was over my friends and I danced to DJ VH1 who played until 3AM. If you know me, or if you read my column regularly you know that two of my favorite genres of music are Hip-Hop and Electro. Downtown needs more of both, which is why a huge

highlight after Bragg Jam was the following First Friday when local emcee Al K!ng played at The Rookery. The show was awesome, Al's level of energy and lyrical ability is something all emcees should aspire to. Thanks to Flocco Torres and MagTard's Chris Nylund for keeping the show organized and keeping the levels balanced, we couldn't have done it without you guys. The only criticism I had for the show was Al's DJ; if I wanted to

see some skinny hipster messing with a record player I'd have stayed in Atlanta. On a more serious and less self-deprecating note, it seems as though some local media outlets have been taking a sensationalistic approach to the recent murder in our town. I am not downplaying, by any means, the tragedy of a young and beautiful life lost at the hands of a heinous animal. However,

allowing a personal and isolated incident to keep you from enjoying life is cheating yourself. Investigators involved were quick to act and handle the situation. As the weather cools more amazing shows and parties and businesses and things to do will be happening in Downtown Macon, not allowing yourself to enjoy it is letting the monster win. Just remember what Mos Def said about fear. 11thHourOnline.com

RADIO FREE MACON QUESTION OF THE WEEK Q: If I didn’t vote in the July 19 primary, can I vote in the August 16 run-off election for mayor and the state senate seat? A: Why didn’t you vote? Okay, sorry. I shouldn’t answer a question with a question. (But if you live in East Macon… nevermind… I’m over it…) The short answer is yes. And you can vote again on November 8. By then, however, the attention will be ballot questions to approve Sunday alcohol sales, and whether to approve a new SPLOST (i.e. – a “penny tax”). The city and county have until August 15—the day before the run-off—to agree on a (heh, heh) consolidated list of projects that the SPLOST would pay for, like recreation, repairing our storm water system, and upgrading to a 800mhz radio system for emergency personnel. The question here is whether the county will insist on building a new courthouse again—likely the reason the last proposed SPLOST was defeated—or if they’ll go for renovations or moving to another facility. But that’s another question for another column.

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA There’s now a “Faux Miriam Paris” on Facebook and anti-Miriam Paris fan page (ironic, eh?) that makes a number of false allegations about the state senate hopeful and even mocks her physique. It seems to come from the same camp that produced the inflammatory and ardently racist pamphlets in mid-July. Well, no matter who is behind it, if David Lucas has an ounce of integrity, he’ll denounce it. Why? That’s the right thing to do. Whenever someone who claimed to support me tried to make personal attacks or launch insults at his wife, Councilwoman Elaine Lucas, I shut it down, removing the comment and reminding folks to leave the name-calling to people who can’t do better.

THE LIST: ON THE ROAD... The Mrs., Maddy and I spent the last week visiting friends in New York City and Easton, Pennsylvania. Just as before, I left jealous of Easton, which isn’t even a third our size. Their downtown area—aided by the same type of Main Street program that’s taking place in Macon now—is gorgeous and booming with shops, restaurants, a major tourist attraction

Jun. 2008 - city spends $28,000 to redo the 2005 audit to avoid losing millions in state grants July 2008 – Reichert pays back $103K on Ellis-era grant Feds say was mismanaged Jun. 2010 – with $75,000 from the city, Historic Hills & Heights, a partnership between Mercer University, College Hill Alliance, Macon Housing Authority and Historic Macon, takes over the revitalization of Beall’s Hill, which had been dormant for years Dec. 2010 - the restoration of the Terminal Station is complete almost a decade after its purchase by the city Dec. 2010 – Moody’s restores the city’s bond rating to A1 May 2011 – city and county finally agree on new Service Delivery Strategy, ending years of double-taxation by the county of city residents

BY CHRIS HORNE

(it’s the Crayola Crayon Factory, which brings in 350,000 people a year), and a flourishing weekend farmer’s market. Here’s what I want to steal from them. #1) Think regionally. Easton is one of the three bigger cities in the Lehigh Valley, Allenton and Bethlehem being significantly larger, and about as far away from Easton as Warner Robins and Milledgeville are from Macon. Instead of trying to go it alone, the Lehigh Valley is marketed as an attraction—not just for tourists but for businesses, families, entertainment, etc. #2) Build a huge roundabout. They turned an old town square into a huge roundabout to slow traffic and create a central gathering area in the shadow of a Union soldier memorial. Could we do something like that with the intersection of MLK and Cherry Street? A roundabout would make it safer for pedestrians to cross, connecting the other side of the road— Terminal Station, GA Sports Hall, GA Children’s Museum, Cherry Street Plaza, Tic Toc, etc—with downtown proper. We could even erect a memorial to honor our creative greats of the past. Mayor Reichert wants to redirect truck traffic down on Seventh Street and a roundabout would almost certainly force that and give us a place to host more events, like the growing market on Mulberry. #3) Print more lit. I love picking up rack cards, flyers, newspapers, brochures, maps and whatever other free crap I can get when I’m in another city. Easton had tons of it from a guide to their downtown to marketing for their Riverfront Arts Festival to the local Sustainable Business Network. Yeah, on one hand it’s clutter, but on the other, better-looking hand that has all the friends, you inform people and promote the perception that there’s a lot to do in this little berg. #4) We need a hero. Former heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes is a lifelong Easton resident, and he’s still their champion, investing in his hometown. He’s the celebrity face of their city, a subconscious bee in the bonnet of all Eastonians: “Hey, if we’re good enough for Larry Holmes, we’re good enough for everyone.” He reflects that civic pride AND creates incentives for people to visit. For all the famous people Macon has spawned, we haven’t really kept any here to rep us. Our odes to our creative icons have been few and slow to come. We have a restaurant named Molly’s in a nod to Little Richard but where does a Little Richard fan go to really experience the Architect of Rock n Roll in Macon? Not to the Douglass where they have his face on the sidewalk. He never played there. The same dilemma is true for almost all our greats. You wouldn’t know that James Brown ever set foot here, let alone cut his first demo, owned a recording studio or multiple restaurants here. There’s no trace of Oscar-winning actor Melvyn Douglass or anything that highlights the summer Tennessee Williams spent in Macon, inspiring the characters for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” At least now the Allmans now have the Big House. Otis Redding fans have a statue and this year’s (exciting) 70th birthday celebration in September, but I’d love to see more. (Why don’t we have a Soul Music Café?) We do have the Redding family, thank goodness, and we’ve been blessed by the involvement of world class violinist Robert McDuffie, who has built a top notch conservatory at Mercer, hosted great concerts and brought his Macon childhood buddy, REM’s Mike Mills. It’s a start, right? 11thHourOnline.com
