get really bored talking politics. And that’s not to say I don’t care, because I do. But I especially find election games trifling. What they say and what they do hardly ever come together. And with a council the size of ours no matter how many new ideas get thrown around the table, change is going to be painful. I’m reminded of the time we had to gather an angry mob at Council just to get the open container ban lifted for Bragg Jam. It’s a whole lot of silliness and though I do have respect for those willing to give up their everyday lives to do it, my brain almost shut down after attending a couple of those meetings. I just plain don’t operate that way. I’ve always steered away from endorsements because I have a hard time believing what I think matters to anyone but me. I will say this though. It’s been aggravating as hell trying to get some of our elected officials and candidates engaged. When we asked Floco Torres to contact each candidate and ask him or her five questions, we knew he wouldn’t be able to reach everyone. But after dozens of calls by both he and I this week trying to get answers in, we decided that in some cases, a “no” answer says it all. By saying nothing to our 30,000 readers the folks that didn’t respond are saying they just don’t care,

and that says enough for me. A big surprise this year was the fight between Elaine Lucas and Chris Horne over Ward I. We pulled Chris off the street some time ago and he became editor of this paper. Hell, it seems like yesterday he was singing “Baby Got Back” ala Richard Cheese, at the Reader’s Choice Awards. I got to know him better than I get to know most folks, mainly because Chris has always worn his heart on his sleeve and he’s never been one to shy away from a good talk. He’s also always been full of ideas. It has taken a team of mules to get follow through out of him at times, but ideas are often just as important. So naturally we were proud when he stepped up to the plate and ran against Elaine. It showed heart, and that’s something this paper was built on. Chris, you’ve done wonders with your campaign, buddy. It made me wish I lived in your ward just so I could vote for you. I doubt I’m the only person that feels that way.Whether you win or not, you’ve gotten a new generation interested in the game and the importance of that will be felt for a long time to come. We’re rooting for you. On July 19, folks, let your voice be heard.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

I saw the third version of Transformers this week. I just like big summer movies. I left about two hours and twenty minutes into it because I didn’t ever think it would end. They could have made it an hour and a half and it would have been fun. Next up is Super 8, hopefully it will fare better. My heart goes out to anyone struggling with addiction, as I’ve had a bout with it myself, only rehab was never in the budget for my family. Still, I get a kick out of watching Celebrity Rehab. This season, with GNR drummer Steven Adler back, among others like felon/porn star Amy Fisher, baseball junkie Dwight Gooden, and Lindsey Lohan’s papa is going to create some soul sapping drama. Did anyone else listen to the mind-scrambling concert by doom-metal gods The Body with the

24 piece all female Assembly of Light Choir this past week? It sounded like Satan’s birth soundtrack, but it was interesting. If you dig this kind of thing you can find the whole concert online at NPR, but listen with care. Also from NPR this week is raprebirth.com, where any rapper can hire rap ghost-writer Jesse Kramer to write a custom rap song. After asking you questions about yourself and your hopes for style he will construct you a song for $699. I don’t know much about this, but I have a feeling he’s gonna be rich. Also this month, music wise, Macon GA has Jamey Johnson, and Lucinda Williams playing back to back weeks and a line-up for Bragg Jam that includes DJ Mix Master Mike. Speaking of DJ Mix Master Mike, I got two new pairs of fly Puma’s this week. One

orange, baby blue, and green pair of Rs 100’s and the other a par of brown, black, and blue Easy Riders. Both for under 50 bucks on Ebay. I’ve been listening to Townes Van Zandt “Live in Berlin,” The Kinks Ultimate Collection, Bob Dylan “Knocked Out Loaded,” and The Tallest Man On Earth “The Wild Hunt” this week (pic). All of it summertime goodness.

here are smoking hot girls dressed in sexy outfits, on roller skates fighting each other to get to the front of the pack before the finish line comes round again. A skater takes a hard elbow to the chest and comes in hot towards the suicide seats and ends up splayed across your lap. Where the hell are you? You’re at a match with the Middle Georgia Derby Dolls, or at least you will be if Amber Whitley, Nicki Mahle, Julia Gilbert and Paige Corneliu and some other souped up broads get their way. Roller Derby’s were big when Travolta was king and nobody gave a crap about breathable attire. But over the last several years the rough, wiseacre sport has seen resurgence in towns all over the country. When a few Macon girls came up with the idea over a year ago, they started skating together soon after and have every Saturday since at Olympia Skate Center. But the Derby Dolls need our help to become bonafide. While they have formed an LLC they

need to start playing in order to start the year long application process required to become sanctioned by their governing body, The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. They need to find a space large enough to hold their bouts and they need girls. Girls of all shapes and sizes are welcome to come to practice. If you don’t know how to skate they can teach you, and if you want to be involved in a non-violent capacity there is plenty of work to be done at matches. No boys are allowed on the dolls, but you can become an announcer or a referee. You’ll see the girls rolling around the streets during Bragg Jam and they will have a table at the Arts @ the Park also on July 30th. Do them a favor, buy some of their swag and help this league get real. Stay tuned to the 11th Hour for more updates on these bruisers and more ways to get involved. You can also contact the Middle Georgia Derby Dolls via Face book. BRAD EVANS

pm with a professional live auction caller and local celebrities adding to the fun. One of the highlights of the event is the Taste of Local Cuisine. Thirty or more restaurants and caterers offer up free sample of their signature dishes from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. “It’s a lively fun-filled evening with plenty to drink and eat and a chance to win some significant cash or a new car or truck,” said Steve Davison, Chairman of the Auction Committee of volunteers who organize and set-up the auction. The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. Tickets $10-$18.(478) 471-PLAY.

Theatre Macon presents: Rocky Horror Show, Music Direction by Jim Penndorf. Showing July 15 and 16 at 8:00pm, July 14 at 7:30pm. July 15 at midnight. The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of two clean cut kids, Brad Majors (Mike Cantrell) and Janet Weiss (Leah Parris), who run into car trouble and seek help at the sight of light down the road. Little do they know it's coming from the place where Dr. Frank N Furter (Brian Barnett) is in the midst of his maniacal experiments. The play is a rock musical, a spoof of science fiction movies, and a bizarre story of seduction and sexual confusion. Complete with sass from the audience and audience-participation props, this deliberately kitschy rock ‘n roll sci-fi gothic is more fun than ever. (Audience participation props will be sold at the theatre. Please DO NOT bring your own.) For reservations call 746-9485. 438 Cherry Street. ANY DREAM WILL DO:

“JOSEPH” JUMP STARTS SUMMER AT MACON LITTLE THEATRE J. CINDY HILL

I

f you're a Bible devotee you may be able to recite the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors from the book of Genesis. If your're a theatre lover you might know that story as “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” - the musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice – the team behind “Phantom of the Opera”. The story of Joseph, a dreamer who is different from his brothers, an outsider, who follows his unpopular vision in the face of slavery and family shun still resonates today. Macon Little Theatre stages the popular, family-friendly piece to kick off its 77th season of live theatre, on July 22 – 31, 2011. Frequent star of midstate stages, Chris Abbott, takes on the title role of Joseph under the direction of Sylvia Haynie and Laura Voss, with choreography by Jenny Carroll. “Joseph is one of the 12 sons of Jacob,” Abbott explains. “His brothers

don't like Joseph – he gets on their nerves. So they sell him into slavery, and he's sent to Egypt where he becomes the interpretive dreamer for the Pharoah.” While the story is based on the Old

Testament, Abbott says the show is surprisingly modern. “It's actually very humorous. There's a ton of humor. That's one of the reasons I like it.” The plot has the makings of a soap opera – family infighting, a fake death, betrayal, unwelcome advances by a married temptress, visions, depression, imprisonment, famine, and finally redemption and reconciliation. “I like the character,” Chris says of the dreamer at the heart of the story. “Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice have made him a more friendly character. I think he was kind of naïve in that he's had these dreams and he's told his brothers these dreams and they didn't like what he told them.” Abbott says he shares this trait. “He tells the truth whether people want to hear

it or not. I'm known to do that myself!” Like most musicals, the story ends on an up note. “I like the promise of hope that it brings,” Abbott remarks. You will too! Suitable for ages 5 and up, the show runs Wednesday through Saturday nights at 8 p.m., with matinees on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. The box office is open Monday through Saturday, July 18 – 30, from 1 to 6 p.m. Call 478471-PLAY for reservations or more info.

Acclaimed singersongwriter Jamey Johnson has been showered with plaques, trophies and award statuettes, but they aren’t the answer to his dreams.“My dream already came true,” says the Alabama native who has rocketed to Nashville stardom. “All I ever wanted was to get to just ride around and sing country music. It’s cool when things happen along the way, because those are things I never thought I could achieve. But whatever happens, I’ll just keep on doing what I do. I wake up every day and go play some more country music.” The things that have happened along the way include songwriter awards for “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” which Jamey co-wrote for Trace Adkins. Tix $25+ ticketmaster.com

The object of cultish adoration for years, singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams was universally hailed as a major talent by both critics and fellow musicians, but it took quite some time for her to parlay that respect into a measure of attention from the general public. Part of the reason was her legendary perfectionism: Williams released records only infrequently, often taking years to hone both the material and the recordings thereof. So if some critics described Williams as "the female Bob Dylan," they may have been oversimplifying things (Townes Van Zandt might be more apt), but the parallels were certainly too strong to ignore. Don’t miss this show in the intimate setting of the Cox Capitol Theatre. Reserved table seating $100 each. Balcony seating $35+

RACHEL FARLEY @ BILLY’S

THUR. JULY 14

Shovels & Rope, David Dondero, Jared Wright @ The Rookery

Necessity is the mother of invention. Less is more. Make it work with what you've got. 2 Guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heap- adorned with tamborines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and co...mbine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine.

FRI. JULY 15

Alter Ego @ APs Hidden Hideaway

Alter Ego always tries to always perform music as close to note-for-note as possible insuring the audience hears every song exactly as they remember it. We also make it interesting by performing material that you will not hear other cover bands attempting.

Matt Pippen & Rachel Farley @ Billy’s Clubhouse

After performing upwards of 300 shows and sharing the stage with fellow country artists Luke Bryan and Brantley Gilbert, Rachel still expresses the same enthusiasm for singing live. Influenced by everyone from country artists Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert and Patsy Cline to rockers like Joan Jett and the boy of Guns and Roses, this young musician’s sound combines the best aspects of contemporary country and classic rock.

SAT. JULY 16

ECHOSPEED @ WILD WING CAFE event raised over $4,000 for local musicians and over $3,00 for Central GA CASA so far this year. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through any band member. Featuring the Abby Owens Band, Jubee and the Morning After, Chelsea Hughes, The Vineyard, Denny Hanson, among many others playing throughout the day.

Echospeed @ Wild Wing Café

When you need your 80’s fix and only the best will do, Echospeed is the band you need! Playing the hits of the 80’s for nearly 20 years. Simple enough. You popped that cassette tape into your boom-box and out came the sounds of Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx and so many more of your favorite bands. That’s what it’s like at an echospeed show.

SUN. JULY 17

Big Mike & Booty Papas @ APs Hidden Hideaway

Big Mike, Hal, Cuzz have been playing music for an accumulative total of 100 years. They play 260-300 dates a year and have played with or opened for acts such as Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan, Jr. Walker, Government Mule, Warren Haynes, Steve Morse, Les Dudeck, Jimmy Hall, Ronnie Hammond & The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Wet Willie, & Dr. Hook.

BETSY FRANCK @ THE BIRD

FRI. JULY 22

Gringo Grande @ Billy’s Clubhouse

Members of Tron Jackson compromise one of Macon’ s most popular bands. Playing mostly originals hasn’t slowed down the crowds at their gatherings. These shows are about as fun as it gets in Macon.

Betsy Franck & the Bareknuckle Band @ The Hummingbird

Betsy Franck and the BareKnuckle Band are based in Athens, Ga. and have played together regionally for (8)years, recorded an album, and impressed the critics.Their sound is funky blues rock with a southern country tinge. Betsy and BKB have played venues around the South including the Georgia Theatre, Tasty World, and the 40 Watt in Athens.

SUN. JULY 24

Jubee & the Morning After @ Adrenaline Nightclub

JuBee and the Morning After is "a venture for the charismatic frizzy fro’d half of City Council who brings a passionately nerdy group of backing rockers to flesh out a pop sound that will surprise you" Have some fun in this new venue located on Riverside Drive.

THE MAYORAL RACE Robert Reichert vs. C Jack Ellis vs. David Cousino vs. Robert Brown vs. Paul Bronson

Hey everybody, my name is Floco Torres & I’m a Hip-Hop musician here in Macon Georgia that you should have at least heard of by now. (Seriously, if you haven’t, where do you get off? Kidding…) A little over a month ago I got invited to Robert Reichert’s announcement for re-election event & I immediately thought he wanted some money or something. After talking to him via Facebook & attending the event, I realized how much of politics that I personally don’t involve myself with but I partake in the same amount of complaining that most people do in our city about change. So I talked with a couple friends and did some research to find out that not many of my age group (I’m 23 so I fall in that 20-30 group) get involved in politics either. I came across the idea to interview Reichert in hopes to use my voice to help make the issues a bit more understandable & to let these officials know that this young generation expects them to serve the city the way we vote them in to. What started as a small idea has turned into me video interview-

ROBERT REICHERT What two key things do you think Macon needs to improve it's economy? One key thing we can do to improve our economy is to continue our efforts to revitalize downtown and the Eisenhower Corridor. Also, we need to attract and retain industries that will provide jobs well into the future based on our strategic location and proximity to resources like Robins Air Force Base and the Port of Savannah. Do you have any plans to improve race relations & if so can you talk a little bit about that plan? Yes, I will continue to work on projects and initiatives that bring our community together not only from all races, but also from different economic and social backgrounds. My efforts in creating Shalom Zones and a Conversation and Dinner Series have gone towards accomplishing improved community relationships. I believe Macon is a city that embraces and respects diversity, and I will work to ensure that we continue to move towards being an inclusive community. If you could take over the Board Of Education for an un-disclosed amount of time, what would you change to improve our educational system?

PAUL BRONSON What two key things do you think Macon needs to improve it's economy? I believe the line of communication amongst business owners and corporation will need to be improved. The safety of the local businesses would be primary to ensure longevity of a business or cooperation. Its important that we focus on improving education, recreation, and crime to create a solid foundation of security and growth. I would also like to add that we should offer incentive for having businesses in the downtown and east Macon area. We have to be able to create a well established downtown that is geared toward entertainment for a wide variety of cultures. Do you have any plans to improve race relations & if so can you talk a little bit about that plan? I believe that race relation is a concern of self improvement. We as a people will have to overcome our own disagreement in order to better serve the people requesting our services. I plan to reinforce a positive work environment by creating events, activities, and team drills that exercise communication skills among all races. I believe that by gaining a clear understanding of the different cultures in the work place, you have a better perceptive of ones life. We can and will learn how to

14 JULY 14 - 28, 2011

First and foremost greater discipline needs to be restored to classroom and this goes along with increased involvement from parents to ensure their children are getting the most out school both in the classroom and at home as well. I also feel we need more alternatives to the college prep track and provide more opportunities for learning early on technical and skilled fields while still in high school. If you're elected, what is the first move you will make to start working towards improving our crime rate? The MPD has just been recognized for their efforts in community policing by the Federal Government, and I will continue to work on improving those efforts in neighborhood policing and the usage of a strike force that targets hot spots. These methods have resulted in a declining violent crime rate over the last several years. Please give two qualities you think you have that your mayoral candidates do NOT have. First, my legal education gives me a unique advantage and second my service in both state and local government provides me the experience to best serve the citizens of Macon going forward. Do you guys have to wear suits ALL the time? No, I sleep in pajamas.

work with one another and ensure we are fair and equal, and upholding the standard across the board! If you could take over the Board Of Education for an undisclosed amount of time, what would you change to improve our educational system? I would have hired Dr.Romain Dallemand a long time ago…..Seriously! To further answer the question, if I was the superintendent of the Board of Education, I would have built a better relationship with the city officials. In doing so, we would gather a plan of operation to tackle the drop-out rate, teen pregnancy, and preparation for college and careers that will set our students up for success. After speaking with teachers and staff, we believe putting incentives for students to earn a free car from Ford upon completing school with a 4.0 and acceptance to a 4 year college is just one of the ways to get our children focused on graduating. If you're elected, what is the first move you will make to start working towards improving our crime rate? In order to improve crime we would do two things. One, retrain and equip our police officers on the force through and with public affairs and communication skills during a hostel environment and civil interactions. We are

ing 3 of the 5 Mayoral candidates & 4 City Council candidates. They can all be checked out on my blog (www.hiimflocotorres.ning.com) as well as Facebook & Youtube. With Election Day less than 10 days away, I contacted as many of the other candidates as I could as well as ones I have already interviewed to do a Q & A type interview for you to check out. Read their answers to make a better decision because we need YOU to VOTE! I feel that this election is as important as anything right now because this could decide what Macon looks like in 10 to 20 years. This election could be the deciding factor between you opening that local business you wanted to, the company you work for being able to keep operating out of Macon, and most importantly turning this city into what it can be and that’s an attractive stop on the map known for it’s rich past & PRESENT Art/Music scene. Thank you to the 11th Hour for letting me do this. Power to the people, black fist in the air & all that.

DAVID COUSINO What two key things do you think Macon needs to improve it's economy? Help promote tourism and help ensure that Macon becomes “MUSIC CITY USA” again and entice philanthropists, to invest in our city and industry. Do you have any plans to improve race relations & if so can you talk a little bit about that plan? I would get more community involvement and church interactions. If you could take over the Board Of Education for an un-disclosed amount of time, what would you change to improve our educational system? The citizens want more parent teacher interaction. The citizens want more in school detention when necessary. The citizens want to concentrate on the curriculum not the building of buildings, and make reading a priority at the kindergarten level with physical education, arts and music as daily activities. The citizens want the classrooms and busses safer, which we all as citizens will need to volunteer our time in the classroom and ride the busses with our children. If you're elected, what is the first move you will make to start working towards improving our crime rate? Having the computer in the patrol cars working properly, better communications with all law enforcement agencies and more police and community interaction. Please give two qualities you think you have that your mayoral candidates do NOT have. I care more about this city surviving, that I would do this job at the price the citizens would pay me, not what the city council votes for pay increase, without the peoples vote who elected me. I am a servant of the city, NOT AN EMPLOYEE.. To fulfill the desires of our citizens and business. I am the only candidate that is non partisan, I can represent all voters as equal, to fulfill wishes of the citizens needs instead of the political parties of the politicians.

“A quality I carry would have to be my communication skills to work across the table with all races and different political views that will allow us to move this city forward.” an emotional people and by having officers that build a trustworthy relationship with their community leaders, it would assist in finding answers to crimes in local areas. Secondly, we would produce jobs for degrees that are currently being offered from our local colleges and universities. It’s important that we also gain a clear understanding of current issues amongst families and religious leaders to manufacture a better view of their concerns. In doing so, we can address the problem and prevent the crimes before they happen. Current citizens are requesting we focus our attention on Girls and Boys Club, afterschool programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and internship programs which focus our attention on the youth as well as the older crowd. The key to making this happen is to get the parents involved and knowledgeable of the opportunities provided for their children. Many other move that I would like to see happen would be a recovery program for criminals that have paid their

dues to society, and that have made the decision to better their lives. We must work together as Danny Glover would say, as One Macon, in building a city full of opportunity, justice, and love. Its about doing what we can to help one another and I plan to do just that! Please give two qualities you think you have that your mayoral candidates do NOT have. A quality I carry would have to be my communication skills to work across the table with all races and different political views that will allow us to move this city forward. It is shown that most failures of a business, company, or any corporations is due to a lack of communication. Leaders have to understand and provide a clear vision to the mission. If the mission is unclear, then the people that work under your supervision will not have a firm base on what is expected from them as well. Its about accountable and constancy among the department head. Another quality would be my youth that would allow me to reach and teach our young crowd while still able to learn from the older crowd. We have to be able to think outside the box and toward the future to ensure we keep a thriving city that our children’s children would be proud of. Do you guys have to wear suits ALL the time? NO!!!! its to hot for that! I would like to wear a nice pair of slacks and a polo shirt.

HUTTO’S ELECTION PREDICTIONS RICK HUTTO Macon City Councilman and published author

ong before I learned I would not have an opponent in my campaign for re-election to Macon City Council, I told several people that I did not look forward to the summer and fall election season. I greatly fear that it will devolve into a campaign based largely upon the black/white issue of race. As the only white city-wide candidate without opposition, I am particularly aware of how much damage can be inflicted when someone tries to “pull the race card” without justification, as someone recently tried to do to me. The worst part for me was the lack of friends – of either race - who offered to refute the charges without being asked. While everyone agreed they weren’t true, no one volunteered to step forward publicly to say so. In case you missed the most recent voter registration figures for the City of Macon, you should be aware of these facts: • In 2007, Macon had 39,462 registered voters; • Since that time, the number has risen almost 20% to 47,462; • The number of registered white voters shrank

1% to 14,671; • The number of black registered voters rose by 30% to 30,613. Obviously the surge in black registration owes a great deal to the campaign and election of President Obama. Even though Georgia remained in the Republican camp in the 2008 presidential election, Bibb County voted solidly Democratic (Obama received 38,987 votes while McCain received 27,037). Among the four candidates for Mayor (we will dismiss the bizarre write-in candidacy of former Republican David Cousino), three are black and only one – the incumbent – is white. Interestingly, one candidate, Paul Bronson, is an articulate young black firefighter. He was required to give up his city job – with no promise of being reinstated – in order to run. That rule was put into effect when Dominick Andrews, an active Macon police officer (and son-in-law of the police chief), ran against former Mayor Jack Ellis. What makes that requirement particularly distressing to me is the fact that the current Mayor’s political aide was allowed to run state-wide for Public Service Commissioner (he lost handily) without giving up one day of pay or benefits, as confirmed in our year-end

THE DOMINANT PRIMORDIAL DONKEY OF MACON POLITICS BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Republican Party

s it Tuesday, July 19th yet? I can hardly wait until this election is over. Can I get an Amen? I was bound and determined NOT to mention Elaine Lucas in my column this week as I devoted one entire column to her and her antics two columns ago, and gave her mention in my last column as well. However, the events that unfurled at the taping of Randall Savages’ “Up Close” program on WMAZ yesterday changed all of that. In what can only be defined as a confrontation, Lucas once again showed her true colors and why she is a bad choice to continue as a member of the Macon City Council. When asked by Savage to respond to the allegations that his candidacy was supported by the Republican Party, Horne responded, “The only person that put me in this race is Elaine Lucas, it is years of failed leadership. Look at East Macon, just look at when you go home, look at what's around you on your way to work. Look at what's around you. Are you happy with 24 years of leadership like that?” Well, that was enough for Elaine. Backed into a corner, she went into a tirade telling him if he wasn’t happy

with the area he should move out and then offered this gem: "Or join me in making improvements or he needed to move out and go to where his Republican friends are. Maybe they could take care of him like they're doing with providing him funds to run, his friend Andrew Blascovich is Mayor Reichert's campaign coordinator or whatever, who worked to talk him into running and the Republicans Erick Erickson, Bill Knowles, Susan Wood. Those folks have endorsed him. They are Republicans, and so if it looks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, it's a Republican duck." First of all Mrs. Lucas, get our Chairman’s name right if you’re going to slam her. Her name is SUZANNE. For some reason you and Robert Brown just can’t seem to get it right. Second, thank you for elevating me into the level of being a member of “the vicious Republican mob” that you have dreamed up. I wear it as a badge of honor as I am sure SUZANNE, Erick and Andrew do. (I was very surprised that Mrs. Lucas didn’t take the time to pronounce Erick’s name Erickay-kay-kay Erickay-kay-kayson as she has continued to spell it on any Facebook post she rambles out. Kudos to you Elaine!) Further, as far as I know only Erickson has come close to an endorse-

budget “sweeps” when unspent salary and benefits were returned to the City’s coffers. At a recent neighborhood party, many of the attendees wanted to talk to me about the Mayor’s race. All expressed the fact that they had high hopes for the current mayor when he was elected. Almost without exception, they also expressed their profound disappointment in his administration. When I asked several how they intended to vote, one said she would just “sit it out” and not vote, another said she would “vote for that nice young guy who lives near here” (Bronson), and yet another said she would “just hold my nose and vote for Reichert.” Not exactly the kind of support needed for the Mayor in an affluent white neighborhood that would normally be expected to turn out heavily for him. How do I foresee the elections? First, on Council there will be two new unopposed members due to open seats – retired educator Louis Tompkins (whom I’ve never met) in the city-wide seat of Council president Miriam Paris (who is running for Robert Brown’s open State Senate position), and businesswoman and philanthropist Beverly Olson (whom I respect) for the open north Macon seat. Six current members are unopposed – President Pro Tem James Timley and I who are both elected citywide, as well as Miley, Defore, Watkins, and White who are elected within their ward. The others all have opposition and several of those challengers stand a good chance of success. I predict that at least two of the remaining seven incumbents will be defeated. And the Mayor’s race? Robert Reichert

has only one hope of re-election. He must somehow win outright on primary day. Unlike four years ago when he carried every precinct in the City, that’s not going to happen this time. In a runoff with either Brown or Ellis, Reichert loses. Unemployment in Macon jumped from 6.1% shortly before he was elected to the present 12.4%, and that figure is higher than both the national and the state average. Prominent business leaders have secretly met to recruit someone acceptable to them who would challenge Reichert, but that also didn’t happen. The choices are stark. Everyone is afraid of an Ellis re-election and with good reason. I was a frequent critic while he was in office, although I must admit that he never resorted to personal attacks when he disagreed with me. Unfortunately I cannot say the same of the current Mayor whose temper and outbursts of anger are well-known. Robert Brown is perceived to be like a silent sphinx, but he is more like another animal – an 800 pound gorilla in the room that some would like to ignore. However, do so at your own peril. I’ve been at this political game a long time and I’ve never known a more savvy votecounter. Who would have thought that Brown would have been able to secure the agreement of Senator Cecil Staton, a conservative Republican, for Brown’s Macon-Bibb consolidation plan? I disagree with a few of its components but I’m enthusiastic that someone has finally gotten this far. So here’s my prediction – Robert Brown will be Macon’s next mayor.

ment of Horne. Blascovich certainly hasn’t and can be friends with whoever he wants. SUZANNE and I can’t as we are both officials in the Republican Party. I can however, and not speaking for her, endorse the idea of getting Lucas out of office so that our community can try and work together for a change. (My God, even The Telegraph endorsed Horne in the name of unity! Is Charles Richardson a member of the “mob” too?) Speaking of endorsements, maybe she should get a dictionary and learn the definition of the word. Bibb County Board of Education Member Lynn Farmer made the common political decision to give a fellow candidate, Elaine Lucas, money, apparently with the condition that her name not be revealed. Well, true to form Lucas not only betrayed her promise of anonymity, but actually posted on her Facebook that Lynn endorsed her, a fact VERY promptly disavowed by Farmer. In the last sentence of her press release, Farmer stated that she was “shocked that Mrs. Lucas broke her promise.” I’m not. Her constituents probably aren’t shocked either. Over the past several weeks, Lucas has done everything she can to not only belittle Horne but to stir up the caldron of the political climate in Macon. Her campaign, instead of focusing on issues and what her ideas are for

the community, has developed into something General Sherman would be proud of. And why? Because a member of her own party DARED to challenge her. Is it any wonder that more “regular” citizens don’t get more involved in politics? Horne is simply a man who wants to better his community for the sake of all, not just self. Instead of running a gracious race and showing the merits as to why she should win, Lucas chooses to attack. Finally, let’s look at her wildlife statement: “They are Republicans, and so if it looks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, it's a Republican duck." Andrew, SUZANNE, Erick and I are Republicans. We quack like Republican ducks and look like Republican ducks. Chris Horne does not. But since she has brought the animal kingdom into the race, I would like to point out that what Jack London called the “dominant primordial beast” has certainly been brought out in Mrs. Lucas in this campaign as she has tried to establish herself as the Alpha politician in Macon. I have news for her, however. She’s more like the “dominant primordial donkey”. If she looks like a Democrat donkey, acts like a donkey and brays like a donkey, she most definitely is a donkey. No offense to the donkeys of the world whether they be Democrat or Republican.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD VOTE TUESDAY, JULY 19

Chris Horne vs. Elaine Lucas | Danny Glover vs. Tom Ellington | Mike Cranford vs. Henry Gibson

WARD 1 POST 3: Chris Horne vs. Elaine Lucas

ELAINE LUCAS Incumbent, 24 years 1) I think it is everyone's responsibility to get all voters involved by tailoring causes and issues to the needs of people. Young people must be reared with a community spirit and the knowledge of responsibility for keeping things going. All elected leaders need to remain aware of the wishes and needs of all segments of the population. 2) I am for consolidation or restructuring of government because I think we must start to think total community. I support this because we must work to make Macon and Bibb County prosperous and a point of destination for visitors. I favor a reduction from 21 to 11 for elected officials and a merging of functions of city and county governments. 3) My main focus will be completion of the Master Plan for Recreation, more focus on crime prevention, and restructuring of governmental functions for greater efficiency.

CHRIS HORNE 1) While our elected officials could do more to engage young voters--and perhaps should--the burden of doing always rests on our own shoulders. When we wait on someone else to do things for us, we get dependent and lazy and apathetic, which is why so many young people in Macon don't view local politics as a viable means for making a difference. Instead they put their time into volunteering for nonprofits and getting involved with community movements. They don't see any changes that can be traced back to their representatives despite the fact that these young professionals, young families, young artists and college students are the folks we SAY we want to keep in Macon. 2) I'm for a city that works efficiently towards a united and ambitious vision for the future. We have two elected law-making bodies, two law enforcement agencies, an elected sheriff, an elected body over education, an elected body over the water authority and numerous commissions and authorities. That is not an efficient way to move your city forward. Consolidation is a logical and long overdue need for this community, and the fact we haven't is one major reason why the communities around us have been thriving while we shrink. 3) Addressing the work that has been left undone or overlooked for the 24 years that the incumbent has been in office. That means putting pressure on the state to finally repave Jeffersonville Road and add sidewalks, which is a project that was paid for with a 1994 SPLOST. Bring in partners to Fort Hill to restore that neighborhood to a condition that those good folks deserve. That means doing something about the number of condemned houses there because no other part of the city has as many as Fort Hill. We can establish a historic district so home owners can get tax credits for renovations. We can help install community gardens

22 JULY 14 - 28, 2011

that supply food for the neighborhood and create more opportunities for people to gather as well as giving children a place to learn. We can use Fort Hawkins as a way to revitalize that neighborhood by thinking of this historic site as an anchor to rebuild around. And that means helping the Fort succeed in its master plan. I think we have to be serious about our recreation plan and that means taking care of the Rosa Jackson Center, which is the oldest center in Macon and doesn't have a swimming pool like the other centers. The incumbent fought hard against $60 million for recreation that would have provided for the children of East Macon. Part of the new discussions would put a cultural arts center in East Macon where people could take classes in the arts.

WARD 3, POST 3: DANNY GLOVER VS. TOM ELLINGTON

TOM ELLINGTON Incumbent, 4 years 1) I would say that the responsibility is a shared one. Regardless of age, all citizens should be involved in political life. That includes voting, but it also means watching what elected officials do, communicating with them and demanding that they work in the best interests of the community. A community with a strong base of engaged citizens will always be better and more prosperous than one in which the populace is uninterested and unengaged. Popular participation in politics is a form of civic self-defense. City government and other political institutions have a role to play, too, by encouraging and facilitating citizen involvement. I’m a big proponent of getting young people registered to vote. I keep registration forms in my office and my car. Former students will tell you that I am quite persistent in encouraging them to register and vote. It is also important that city government by transparent. As citizens, we are fortunate to have the protections of the Open Meetings Act and the Open Records Act, which both place legal obligations on city government to be accessible to citizens. However, true transparency involves more than just following the letter of the law. That’s why I have led the fight against Cox Communications’ decision to make the city’s government-access channel inaccessible to basic-cable subscribers. For years, many of our citizens have watched council meetings on Channel 14 in order to keep their elected representatives accountable. That basic access should not be limited to those who are well enough off to afford digital cable – especially when Cox’s entire business model depends on its use of public rights of way. I am excited about the grant the city recently received from the Knight Foundation. The Code for America project will make the city’s Web site more usable for citizens. 2) I am for consolidation if it creates a more efficient government than we currently have and adequate representation for all citizens. I was pleased to see serious discussions of con-

THREE QUESTIONS FOR THOSE SEEKING A SEAT ON MACON CITY COUNCIL

1) Do you think it is more of the people's responsibility to get young voters involved, city government, or a little bit of both? 2) Are you for or against consolidation? 3) What will be your main focuse if you’re elected? solidation take place during this year’s session of the General Assembly. Where it has been tried, consolidation has a mixed track record. If consolidation moves forward, I want Macon and Bibb County’s experience to be positive like that of Athens and Clarke County, not dysfunctional like Augusta and Richmond County. The plan has to be well designed if it is going to deliver the greater efficiency that consolidation promises. Regardless of whether the General Assembly acts to bring forward a new consolidation plan, there are things we can do to increase government efficiency, e.g. functional consolidation. There are a number of services that are already provided by one government on a countywide basis. The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, the only Class One fire department in the state, is a consolidated department. Emergency Management, Animal Control, and Parks and Recreation are likewise already consolidated. The new service delivery strategy should provide greater efficiency and a more equitable distribution of burdens between city residents and people in the unincorporated county. Still, there is no reason that the city and county cannot make arrangements to consolidate other functions, such as Human Resources and Purchasing. The nice thing about functional consolidation is that it is perfectly consistent with full-scale consolidation. There is nothing in such an approach that would prevent the General Assembly from bringing forth a fullscale consolidation plan. 3) If I am elected to a second term, I will continue to work with other leaders in our community to revitalize downtown and eradicate blight in our neighborhoods. I will also continue to be a careful steward of the taxpayers’ money. As vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee, I have kept a close eye on the city’s finances, going through the budget line by line every year, and pushing for cuts when spending was not adequately justified. We are now putting in improved financial procedures at Animal Control thanks to an audit that I requested. Thanks to legislation I sponsored, the city now has a dedicated account to pay to close the landfill when it comes to the end of its useful life. And in the last four years, despite the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the city has not had to borrow money via tax anticipation notes to meet its daily operating expenses. We have also had some successes in redevelopment. I have been a strong supporter of the College Hill Alliance, which is succeeding in transforming the corridor between Mercer and downtown. The redevelopment of the Beall’s Hill neighborhood is progressing, thanks to work by Historic Hills and Heights and Historic Macon. Lynmore Estates is being transformed thanks to the tireless efforts of its residents and Habitat for Humanity. The disaster area that was Macon Homes is being

replaced with good, affordable homes, thanks to the work of the Macon Housing Authority and a grant that the city obtained. Due to parochial interests, some members of council opposed this project. I was a strong supporter because I knew it was an opportunity we could not afford to lose.

DANNY D. GLOVER

1) I believe it is the peoples responsibility to not only get young people engage in municipal elections but to engage all citizens in an right that in my opinion makes us American. Its up to the city government to implement legislation/policy that inspires its youth to want to be apart of the process at its basic level, voting! 2) I am in support of consolidation of city and county governments for three primary reasons; 1. Calls for fewer governing officials 2. Creates an edge for economic development 3. Economy of Scale. I am confident we can harness our resources and truly with consolidation, Macon-Bibb County can and will be on the road to being an economic powerhouse teeming with jobs. 3) • Public Safety: Focus on reducing crime rates in Ward III, Post 3. (taking down abandoned houses, dealing with street gangs, improving the quality of the education of our youth and providing meaningful recreation are examples) • Human Services: Focus on ensuring our citizens are equipped with the tools and skills needed to be active and productive citizens.( Here again recreation and training programs. I would like to see the union in various occupational skills develop a program to train young people in a trade. This will help with the crime and also develop an interest in the area by having a group of skilled individuals ready for work. I think it will attract the attention of some corporation to come here where a ready supply of skilled laborers are located.) •Beautification: Focus on aesthetically upgrading Ward III, Post 3

Henry Gibson did not respond to our request WARD 2 POST 2: James Michael Cranford vs. Henry Gibson

JAMES CRANFORD Incumbent, 6 years

1) I think it is the parent’s responsibility to instill in their children a sense of pride in their community, state and nation so they will want to participate in the democratic process. The schools should reinforce this also. 2) I’m in favor of consolidation as long as it can be shown that there will be a substantial savings to the taxpayer. Merely reducing the size of the governing bodies does not create overall cost effectiveness.

Ron Lemon vs. Henry Ficklin | Larry Schlesinger vs. Stanley Brown | Sarah Hunt vs. Lauren Benedict

3) Macon has a rich musical heritage and that should be part of our city’s “Brand”, to attract more tourists and more local and national musical groups and artist. My main focus is and has always been to make sure the taxpayers get the services they need without having to raise taxes and keeping Macon on a sound financial path. As Chairman of Appropriations I have done that and successfully championed the pay scale for police, fire and general employees; helped create a program for replacing police and fire equipment; moved the police precinct back to the Macon Mall for shopper safety and put a new police precinct in Bloomfield at Village Green, and stayed in budget while doing so.

WARD 3 POST 2: Ron Lemon vs. Henry Ficklin (Henry Ficklin did not return our request)

RON LEMON 1) I like the ideas being discussed about designating an area as an "Arts/Music District". We have a very active arts community and we should look into all ways we can support new ideas to stimulate growth in this area. I like what has developed with Bragg Jam. Local music festivals can help us build the image of this being a music town again. We should play on our strengths and nobody else in the state has the rich music history we have. I think programs like Jessica Walden's walking tours are fabulous ways to start to bring tourists into the mix. The Big House museum is a wonderful example of how we can save a piece of history but also make it profitable by frequent concerts on site to generate income. 2) One of the first things we have to do is get our house in order. We are not known around the state for having a well functioning government. We don't always speak to industry and groups with one clear voice. We should be a community that welcomes innovation and start up businesses. We need to work with our existing colleges and tap into that incredible amount of talent that could lead to new business that partner or benefit from these schools. We should of course streamline our business licensing and inspection process. We should jump at the chance to help someone open a new business in this community. Bringing larger industry to this area will depend on our available workforce to some extent. This is a weak spot for us with so many folks not finishing high school or college. We can use schools such as Macon Tech. to assist industry in training a workforce. The bottom line is we need to build back up education system and make this a town where everybody is expected to graduate and become a productive member of society. 3) We have to change the direction and tone of city government. We need to bring positive new ideas to the table and start making change happen in all neighborhoods in this town. We need to re-engage citizens to be part of their communities. We must address the blighted and substandard housing as it eats away at many areas of town like a cancer. I would love to work on a Pleasant Hill Corridor concept to

re-vitalize Pleasant Hill to the vibrant community it once was. Above all I think we need to work as one people with a common goal of lifting this city up.

WARD 3 POST 1: Larry Schlesinger vs. Stanley Brown (did not return our request)

LARRY SCHLESINGER (Incumbent 4 yrs) 1) I would like to see two things happen. The first is that we find ways to entice the so-called 'creative class' to our city, and downtown in particular, bolstering even further the ranks of our growing Arts/Music scene. Second I would like to renew the effort to create an entertainment zone in downtown Macon similar to Beall Street in Memphis. 2) A good quality of public education and the the trainable workforce that results is absolutely key to attracting the good, high quality jobs that Macon and all of Middle Georgia desperately needs. Macon also needs to offer incentives to do business here by continuing to creating tax allocation districts, enterprise and opportunity zones, and other incentives to locate and relocate. 3) Education, jobs and safe neighborhoods are absolutely key. I would also like to see Macon and our Middle Georgia region participate in a formal envisioning process similar to that of Chattanooga and the one in which I actively participated in Montgomery (AL) that is community driven and that defines and sets the course for the region for the next 20 years.

WARD 5 POST 1: Sarah Hunt vs. Lauren Benedict

SARAH HUNT 1) The promoting of the Arts and Music in a community should begin with educating its youth through Arts in education programs. There should be several festivals a year displaying all of the various art forms that are part of the community’s history. There also must be a strong marketing campaign to draw people from surrounding cities and counties to Macon. We must offer activities that would be of interest to all of our citizens. In at 60’s, 70;s and 80;s on the third Sunday in each month there was a gospel show at the city auditorium and it would be packed, It would be great to bring that back. We have beautiful parks and Visual art shows along with music performers in one of the parks monthly would be a great way to bring people together as well as promote our ART and MUSIC. I feel the venues are overly priced our location. 2) We have got to attract more industry to Macon and encourage patronage of our small businesses. One key fact in getting industry to Macon is a strong educational system. Most companies want to know that the workforce is trainable to work in their industry. The beautification of Macon: clean up the streets and communities of trash and so many

THREE QUESTIONS FOR THOSE SEEKING A SEAT ON MACON CITY COUNCIL

1) What are some better ways you think we can promote our Art/Music scene to better promote Macon? 2) What is the best way you think that we can create more jobs in our city? 3) What will be your main focus if you’re elected? abandoned/boarded up houses. People are attracted to beautiful surroundings. 3) What will be your main focus if you're elected? My main focus will be meeting the needs of the people I have been chosen to serve. We must do something about homelessness in Macon. Our homeless population is rapidly increasing. In all of the wards there are areas that need to be cleaned up and property owners need to be demanded to fix up the properties and make them attractive and livable. The recreation centers need to be remodeled and have programs for our youth and seniors. People need to feel safe in their communities again; and this will only happen with a trained law enforcement team and community involvement.

LAUREN BENEDICT (Incumbent 4 years) 1) The art and music scene is one of our best kept secrets, and the change we need is in making it a well know fact! I am proud to be joining the board of the Macon Arts Alliance because I already know what a great job Macon Arts is doing promoting the arts and arts education in our community. I will continue to support the work of work Macon Arts and other organizations like the Bragg Jam Festival and the College Hill Corridor Alliance because when we make sure their community events are well publicized and well attended Macon is a better place to live. There is something related

to arts or music going on in Macon each and everyday and I’m committed to helping build on the great work that has already been done. 2) Businesses are more interested in investing in Macon when they see leaders working together more effectively. We must continue to focus on economic development and redevelopment throughout the entire city. I helped draft the Urban Redevelopment Plan that was adopted by Macon City Council earlier this year. The plan will allow for the creation of both opportunity zones and enterprise zones which are areas that provide tax incentives for new business as well as existing business that create new job. Other parts of the plan call for increased public safety measures and code enforcement which make Macon safer and more attractive to business owners. The City must work harder to demonstrate that we are a good investment for business. Over the last four years, we have taken steps in the right direction by building the City’s reserves while keeping taxes level and implementing the Urban Redevelopment Plan. 3) I will continue to focus on the three things that have been my primary concern since first being elected in 2007 – fiscal responsibility, redevelopment of our neighborhoods and commercial districts and improved public safety.

These candidates were gracious enough to answer Floco’s questions about our city, even though they are unopposed in the July 19th election. RICHARD JAY HUTTO Ward 1, Post 1 “We aren’t going to attract jobs until we can provide a job-ready workforce. That takes education, but it doesn’t have to be at the college level. GEICO hires constantly but they can’t find people with basic language and computer skills. We need to make those readily available at our tech schools and at the Hutchings Career Center. Once an employee in that “back office” environment starts impressing a supervisor and moves up the ladder, there are more openings for the entry level employee and the cycle continues. I’m fortunate not to have an opponent and attribute it to the level of constituent service I’ve been known for for years. I intend to do more of the same, and am particularly looking forward to the continued revitalization of our downtown through Macon’s dynamic young creative class.”

LOUIS F. TOMPKINS Ward 4, Post 1 “The responsibility to generate political interest should be a responsibility of the public and the politicians. Public forums, town hall meetings, television talk show appearances are valuable in creating political interest among the citizens of a city. When the public is given an opportunity to hear and ask questions of a political candidate (s) and officials already in office, a more personal connection is established. When citizens feel their questions and concerns are heard, they are more likely to increase political involvement. The right to vote should always be taken very seriously. There was a time in our American history when only certain people could vote. There was a time when a man was only counted as one-third of a person. In many countries around the world, the general public has no say in how the government is run at all. The 26th amendment in 1971 changed the voting age from 21 to 18. Richard Nixon was re-elected as President with 55 percent of those voting were 18-29. That was the highest youth vote until President Barack Obama won his election. A recent poll conducted in our own Macon community highlighted the fact that more young people should be involved in the political process.” 11thHourOnline.com

I

t was 2:15 in the morning and I was sitting in the back of a limousine with three other people. We had stopped en route to the Back Porch Lounge to drop off a homeless person we had picked up along with way. A switch had flipped in the vagabond’s mind and he decided we needed a police escort, he immediately opened his cell phone and within minutes was arguing with the 911 operator about obtaining an escort for us. My mind immediately began to recoil in fear, what kind of repercussions and questions could a phone call like that mean for the four morally unsound individuals in the backseat of that limo. What would the police think? How would I explain this to them, or my mom? How and why did that hobo have a cell phone? These questions and more scrolled through my mind like ticker tape as the other three occupants and the driver began to yell for our now unwanted guest to exit the car. “They don’t pull over limos, dude. NIGHTLIFE | the city’s best bets when the sun goes down

THE URBAN EXPLORER JULY HAS GOT TO BE MACON’S BUSIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR BY SEAN PRITCHARD

O

n the drive back from a short vacation in Ohio over Independence Day weekend, I began to think about what would be going on in the next few weeks and realized I had a lot to sum up in this short article. July has been the busiest month I have experienced this year and shows no sign of slowing up. Tonight (14th), The Rookery is hosting 4 artists that you really don't want to miss; Shovels and Rope is the moniker of Michael Trent & Cary Ann Hearst (you may remember Cary from her stellar shows at The Bird in years past). The two have teamed up and are making some of the most rocking music in South Carolina. They're bringing their good friend Joel Hamilton with them and to make the deal even sweeter they'll be joined by one of the most "American" people I've ever seen, David Dondero, a singer/songwriter from Omaha, Nebraska (look him up, seriously). Macon will be represented by Jared Wright (singer/songwriter/vigilante) playing new tunes he's been working on the past few months. Saturday brings the return of the quarterly Big Bird Bash at The Hummingbird. 13 artists, multiple events, and great specials. I'm most excited about The Abby Owens Band's set. After hearing about Abby's appearance with Jason Isbell at AthFest and thanks to Michael Collins letting me listen to her record, I know something special can be expected. All of this is happening for a great cause, so come support! As a forewarning, rest up Sunday if you can because the last two weeks of July is without a doubt going to be the most eventful fortnight of the year! I would suggest a walk on the Ocmulgee River Walk or some Frisbee in Tatnall Square Park. If you're a real trooper, make it down to Sunday Jam at The Rookery. As always, it's FREE.

*On Tuesday the 19th, get down to the polls for the local election Primary. You can vote before this at select locations.* This is one of the most important electoral periods that Macon has seen in some years. I

encourage you to make your voice heard because there are candidates that will actually listen. I've attended a few forums and meetings with candidates and to say the least, some interesting topics have arisen from debates. I wish the best to newcomer Chris Horne, as his debates with incumbent Elaine Lucas have proven to be some of the most entertaining and informative of the election. If all the political action has clouded your head a bit, I would suggest heading to the Golden Bough for a FREE show featuring Mulberry Street's Justin Cutway, also known as Trendlenberg. He'll be playing alongside two artists from Texas (David Ramirez and Brandon Kinder of The Rocketboys) and Brian Wheat, a songwriter from upstate New York. On Thursday and Friday I'll be splitting my time between a few different events. Thursday: Savannah, Georgia's Showbread makes a return to Macon alongside a great touring lineup. I once saw Showbread play to 500 people in the Starcadia Pavilion during a thunderstorm, no kidding. DSEL Promotions brings their always popular BASSFACE Party to Element later that night. These guys are known for bringing the best in local and regional EDM artists to Macon. It's well worth checking out. Friday: Longtime Macon resident Clifford Pauley will be saying farewell to Rat City before he heads to Moscow, Russia as a missionary. The man has been a great friend and an amazing part of making this community work the past few years. If you see him, congratulate him. Then, The Bronzed Chorus, The Eszett, and Butterflies, all bands from North Carolina, will be raising hell at The Rookery. Somewhere in between all the commotion, I'm going to make my way to the City Auditorium for Bragg Jam Presents: Jamey Johnson and Guests. Remember!! The official Bragg Jam Concert Crawl 2011 lineup has been posted at www.braggjam.org and on Facebook, so check that out! Bragg Jam is July 30th, the last Saturday of the month and I have honestly been waiting all year for this. I have a feeling it's going to be the best year yet.

Albert Suttle, a ten-year veteran of the genre-spanning band Perpetual Groove, took a few minutes to talk loyal fans, heavy metal and non-stop touring

LISTEN UP TO P-GROOVE’S ALBERT SUTTLE The genre-spanning band Perpetual Groove has had a “record” year in 2010. With the release of two new studio projects, Heal, a full length record, and Honey Cuts, an EP and a slew of sell out performances, the band has been reinvigorated with the addition of new keyboardist, John Hruby. Hailing from Athens, GA, this legendary band has once again reinvented their sound. A line-up adjustment and a change in scenery have given way to a beautiful, timeless set of recordings that signifies the rebirth of a band that’s carved out their own unique sound by performing nearly 1000 live shows in their brief career. Ten-year veteran and drummer for P-Groove, Albert Suttle, took a little time out to talk to us about what else? Music! Name a song you’ve listened to in the past 24 hours. “Remix of War” with Bone Thugs and Harmony and Henry Rollins. What was the first album you bought with your own money? ZZ Top’s Eliminator I think but it may have been Afterburner and obviously it was a cassette. Name a band our readers should know about. It’s funny, I go through phases where I only buy and listen to new stuff. Lately I’ve been on a dry spell, but the last new stuff I listened to was Jesu. Jesu is awesome. It was a recommendation from my ipad. It was like a mix mash of all the greatest heavy metal albums in one 50minute song. It was like they tried to mix “Explosions in the Sky” with Isis. They just created this opus. The temp is slow, the double bass is going. It’s just kinetic. The vocals aren’t screamy so it’s not over the edge heavy. It’s dark and then it gets less dark, but never really light. Really good stuff.

How long have you been with P-groove? 10 years. I wasn’t originally the drummer but I came on pretty early. We play about 100-150 shows a year. How has P-Groove’s music transformed over the years? The Jam scene has changed. Things come along that are supposedly the next big thing, but in this scene you are never forgotten. Jam fans are loyal, if they like you they will pretty much always like you. That’s worked in our favor, that we’ve been around so long. We obviously are growing and want to take it to the next level and we’re constantly trying to figure out how to do that. SEE THEM LIVE P-Groove will be playing Macon, GA on Friday, July 29 at the Cox Capitol Theatre. Tickets are $15 in advance.
