KNOW MACON: JUNE 30 - JULY 14, 2011

by BRAD EVANS

brad@11thHourOnline.com

y mother has been a Southern Living subscriber for 30+ years, maybe 40. She used to see me scribbling in my notebooks as a kid, and say “Maybe one day you’ll be in Southern Living, sweetie.” It was the only magazine she got, probably the only one she reads with regularity. So in September’s issue, when she sees me in it, I know I’ll get calls from her, and from all her sisters, just like I did when Mark Ballard name-dropped me in his Telegraph column. “Oh you know Mark Ballard? We tour his house every year for Christmas, he’s so nice.” Yes he is. Anyway it turns out I’m the go-to guy for Southern Living when they are looking for someone in Macon who wouldn’t know how to polish silver if a they were sitting on a box full of Hagerty's. I took their travel writer out to our favorite watering hole, Adam’s Lounge. I’ve written about it dozens of times, and without reading it, I can pretty much tell you what Southern Living’s feature will highlight. The handwritten signs, 91-year old George Adams asleep in his easy chair, that authentic feeling that can’t be built, it

just has to percolate for over 50 years. Almost as long as it would take for Southern Living to find them. Writer Alex Crevar stayed at our house for the night , and we did it right. We drank way too many really cold beers and told lies at Adams all afternoon, wandered into Downtown to the Jazzplex to see a friend of mine play, but the power kept going out. Then some dudes tried to fight the little guy at the Bird later. We came home passed out and he called this past week to let me know that Mom will read all about it in September. Awesome. I thought it was pretty cool this week for our local musicians and for a lot of the candidates up for vote this July to show up at the Bird this past week. There wasn’t a speech that I didn’t enjoy, and since I’ve been here I haven’t seen as much excitement around an election among we youngsters. Regardless of how it turns out, that level of interest is going to do our city good. Next issue Floco Torres, who has been out on his own interviewing the candidates for the You Tube public will be doing the same thing for us. I cant wait to hear what they have to say.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

During my recent bout with pneumonia, a friend gave Ja No Man, by Richard Poplak. It’s a vivid portrayal of the life of an ordinary white South African growing up during apartheid-era South Africa has been fun. Told with extraordinary humour and self-awareness, Richard’s story brings his gradual understanding of the difference between his country and the rest of the world to life in a great read. I also came home from watching Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and read a biography of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. I hadn’t given much thought to the fact that he really existed and I must say that his life may have been more interesting than the legend. Pillaging had to have been pretty damn fun. During the recent surge of crime here in Middle

Georgia a reader wrote in asking if I had my carrying permit for concealed weapons. I do, but I rarely use it, because I don’t really want to shoot anyone and if you don’t want to shoot someone with your concealed weapon, you’d probably be better off not pulling it out. That said, it’s a fairly easy process, as long as you’re not a felon. Go to the same place you get your marriage license in the Bibb County Courthouse, bottom floor, and its 25 bucks and will take two weeks. I’ve been listening to Allen Toussaint the New Orleans pianist and composer this week, mainly because I’ve been watching too much Treme. I also listend to Shabazz Palaces “Black Up” this week, the inspired hip hop. It was interesting, but I’m the first to admit I’m too old or big or too some-

thing to understand Dubstep. Also listened to the Bo Keys, an old-school sounding Memphis band, compromised of veteran session players. There new album “Got to Get Back” is a big ole Bar Kays inspired vase of good. Their guitar player wrote that riff from Shaft, fyi. I think it rocks that Lucinda Williams is coming to the Capitol Theatre in July. I don’t mind paying more for tickets, to get the more intimate experience. Bragg Jam announced Jamey Johnson tickets are now on sale for his late July show, which also rocks. All this right around the same two weeks as Bragg Jam itself (July 30), which just released it’s schedule. Go to www.braggjam.org to check it out and make your plans.

Little do they know it's coming from the place where Dr. Frank N Furter (Brian Barnett) is in the midst of his maniacal experiments. The play is a rock musical, a spoof of science fiction movies, and a bizarre story of seduction and sexual confusion. LITTLE TYBEE @ THE ROOKERY rating Southern music traditions with their own life experiences, these long time friends have shown that Southern rock still has a place in the American music pantheon. Gaslight’s hard rock edge and fast guitar leads keep their loyal core of music loving fans thirsting for more.

Far From Over @ Billy’s Clubhouse

"Far From Over" was formed in January 2011. Ken Dominy (Drums) and David Young (Guitar/Singer) met at Billy's Clubhouse in Macon, Georgia through a mutual friend Scott Smith. After a few practices with Clint Cromer (Guitar/Backing Vocals) and Stuart Berry (Bass), the band emerged. A short time later Mike Smallwood joined as the Bass player and the group started gigging around Middle Georgia.

WarTown @ Wild Wing Café

WARTOWN is Steve Holcomb and Mike Yurgalavage, two long-time friends who have played music in one form or another for nearly 25 years. Formerly performing simply as "Steve and Mike", they have pushed themselves to grow and expand their shows, striving to increase their audiences and playing in new venues.

After performing upwards of 300 shows and sharing the stage with fellow country artists Luke Bryan and Brantley Gilbert, Rachel still expresses the same enthusiasm for singing live. Influenced by everyone from country artists Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert and Patsy Cline to rockers like Joan Jett and the boy of Guns and Roses, this young musician’s sound combines the best aspects of contemporary country and classic rock.

With an alias name of "WarTown", Steve and Mike are better known simply as "Steve & Mike" - who have played music in one form or another together for over 25 years. You will quickly realize that our sound is much bigger than you expected, with our own backing basslines, percussion, and various other instruments too numerous to count. With a performance list of well over 100 songs, our palette of covers runs through a variety of artists and styles. A long time staple of the Warner Robins music scene, the guys have been getting gigs in Macon as well, playing Wild Wing on July 8.

15DAYS

THE SCENE it’s what you missed | this i know

MY WEEK WAS COOLER THAN YOURS Dylan York’s guide to getting down; he recaps what you may have missed sitting on your ass these past two weeks “Dude, it’s cool, I work here. I have to take this trash out later anyway.” I was waiting in line to use the bathroom at a bar in Athens when an employee walked in and began to urinate in the trashcan. Will Thompson had asked me to come up to help promote and shoot a show headlined by Contraband and Macon’s own DJ Street Urchin. I drove up on Monday in a borrowed Buick and in the course of four days ran on something like 15 hours of sleep total. With a Back City Woods show the previous week at 40 Watt and the show that week Will has his sights set on bridging the gap between the Macon and Athens scenes. Will is a friend of mine and I hadn’t seen him in months so I jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with him. The first night I arrived I was introduced to several very cool people including a girl who does booking for the 40 Watt. We had spoken on the phone the previous week over a concern with the Back City Woods show and I instantly made myself feel creepy by recognizing her by her voice. Will and I began the night at a downtown bar and ended it by breaking into a pool at 4 in the morning in a neighborhood which no one in our group lived at. The week continued along similar lines until the show that Thursday. The show, hosted by Atlanta Hip-Hop duo The Adult Film Stars, had been a success and was well worth the lack of sleep and the steady diet of PBR, granola cereal and strong black tea I’d been enduring throughout the week. I missed Macon, though. The previous Tuesday had brought a pretty amazing show to The 567. Headlined by Athens locals Space Ghost and featuring Chris Bell and Texas-based Sick Sea, the show had been both eclectic and amazing. The 567 was a stop on Sick Sea’s first tour east of Texas. BCW bassist Mike Collins’ and I marveled at the drummer’s skill and use of cowbell and their frontwoman’s “too clean to be indie” vocals. Joy Division-esque Space Ghost brought a sound and a stage presence that was like something I hadn’t seen in Macon before. Their drum and synth-driven music carried their frontman’s lyricism and on-stage antics to a level that surpassed their own youth. Recently The 567 has been a favorite venue of mine in Macon. They’re a church on the weekend, which is seemingly icky to some people within the indie culture. However, their openness in bringing secular shows has proven to be successful and their collaborations with The Blue Indian and their in-house booking agent Jordan Welsh has made The 567 the new indie hub for Downtown Macon. Along with the Golden

Bough bookstore, The 567 is leading the way toward progressive booking within our scene. Following suit is their next door neighbor and my favorite place to meet with friends in the daytime, The Rookery. Recently The Rookery has revamped their in-house PA system and has begun to book bands on a steady basis. Their weekly Sunday Jam has solidified itself as a forum for local artists, but their status as venue is slowly shaping itself into something altogether great. I was asked to shoot a show there this past Saturday for the band Broken Bootstraps. The Rookery, of course, is a restaurant first and a venue second and I’m sure owner Chad Evans doesn’t want to see a return to the days when that role was reversed and the floors were constantly sticky. Regardless, an ear has been kept to the scene and The Rookery has become an outlet for musical creativity within Downtown Macon. I also appreciate their new business model of hiring a wait staff comprised solely of really cool guys and really cute indie girls.

This summer has been amazing so far, I’m excited to see what the rest of the season holds. I want to see more shows featuring singer/songwriter Amy Godwin. I saw Amy

Mary recently won the NPC Jr National Heavyweight Bodybuilding title in Chicago, IL. Below she tells us what she knows about getting in shape.

for the first time last summer at Atlanta’s Wonderoot venue opening for her boyfriend Christian’s band Christ, Lord. She is one of the most talented individuals I have ever met in my life. I’m also looking forward to a return from Columbus’ Stereomonster later this month. I finally got a chance to hear some of Mag Tard’s new album, I wrote about their album release show in my last column but I just haven’t had the time to sit and listen to anything from it. Needless to say the tracks I have heard were upbeat alt-rock amazingness. Also, if you’re downtown be on the lookout for messages in bottles, there’s a strange collaboration on the horizon.

HUTTO’S ELECTION PREDICTIONS RICK HUTTO City-wide councilman and published author

ong before I learned I would not have an opponent in my campaign for re-election to Macon City Council, I told several people that I did not look forward to the summer and fall election season. I greatly fear that it will devolve into a campaign based largely upon the black/white issue of race. As the only white city-wide candidate without opposition, I am particularly aware of how much damage can be inflicted when someone tries to “pull the race card” without justification, as someone recently tried to do to me. The worst part for me was the lack of friends – of either race - who offered to refute the charges without being asked. While everyone agreed they weren’t true, no one volunteered to step forward publicly to say so. In case you missed the most recent voter registration figures for the City of Macon, you should be aware of these facts: • In 2007, Macon had 39,462 registered voters; • Since, the number has risen 20% to 47,462

L

• The number of registered white voters shrank 1% to 14,671 • The number of black registered voters rose by 30% to 30,613. Obviously the surge in black registration owes a great deal to the campaign and election of President Obama. Even though Georgia remained in the Republican camp in the 2008 presidential election, Bibb County voted solidly Democratic (Obama received 38,987 votes while McCain received 27,037). Within the city limits the Democratic percentage was much higher. Among the four candidates for Mayor (we will dismiss the bizarre write-in candidacy of former Republican David Cousino), three are black and only one – the incumbent – is white. Interestingly, one candidate, Paul Bronson, is an articulate young black firefighter. He was required to give up his city job – with no promise of being reinstated – in order to run. That rule was put into effect when Dominick Andrews, an active Macon police officer (and son-in-law of the police chief), ran against former Mayor Jack Ellis. What makes that requirement particularly distressing to me is the fact that the current

The Cleansing of Macon: Or How To Get Rid of Macon's Bowel Obstructions in One Day BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Republican Party

uly 19th is the most important day in our community’s history as Macon and Middle Georgia will be voting on several key races that will most certainly affect our future as well as the future of our children. In one fell swoop we can clean out the commode of our local government by flushing out the refuse that has clogged us up for decades by voting Elaine Lucas, David Lucas, Robert Brown and C. Jack Ellis out of office once and for all. In the past several weeks, I have seen solidarity arise around Middle Georgia that in the past has been completely unheard of as people around the mid-state have begun to realize that it is actually possible to get our stagnate community on the move again. People have put aside party differences to do what’s right for the whole community, not just for a select few individuals who think that the voters owe them a job for life while they divide our community with their smears and in some cases out right lies. (I devoted much of my last column to Elaine Lucas’ false

J

24 JUNE 30 - JULY 14, 2011

accusations that the Republican Party has been behind her opponent. It was a lie then and is a lie now no matter how many times she tells it. Believe it or not, I am trying to make this article positive instead of my normal pessimistic, crumudgeonly self but it is so hard to keep a positive attitude when you’re writing about the “quadrangle of qualm and agitation” better known as Ellis, Brown and Lucas times two.) Why has Middle Georgia been held captive by these soldiers of untruth for so long? Why have we not elected them out of office sooner? We simply have not had any alternatives to vote for in their place. My friends that has changed! Each of the aforementioned dividers of our community have qualified opposition that will all heal our wounds instead of continuously pouring salt in them and pecking at us like a chicken that finds a sore on a wounded barnyard mate. We must all put aside our differences in ideology and politics for the common good of the community and get rid of career politicians who only look out for their own self interests while replacing them with solid alternatives that WILL look out for the good of all of us.

Mayor’s political aide was allowed to run statewide for Public Service Commissioner (he lost handily) without giving up one day of pay or benefits, as confirmed in our year-end budget “sweeps” when unspent salary and benefits were returned to the City’s coffers. At a recent neighborhood party, many of the attendees wanted to talk to me about the Mayor’s race. All expressed the fact that they had high hopes for the current mayor when he was elected. Almost without exception, they also expressed their profound disappointment in his administration. When I asked several how they intended to vote, one said she would just “sit it out” and not vote, another said she would “vote for that nice young guy who lives near here” (Bronson), and yet another said she would “just hold my nose and vote for Reichert.” Not exactly the kind of support needed for the Mayor in an affluent white neighborhood that would normally be expected to turn out heavily for him. How do I foresee the elections? First, on Council there will be two new unopposed members due to open seats – retired educator Louis Tompkins (whom I’ve never met) in the city-wide seat of Council president Miriam Paris (who is running for Robert Brown’s open State Senate position), and businesswoman and philanthropist Beverly Olson (whom I respect) for the open north Macon seat. Six current members are unopposed – President Pro Tem James Timley and I who are both elected city-wide, as well as Miley, Defore, Watkins,

and White who are elected within their ward. The others all have opposition and several of those challengers stand a good chance of success. I predict that at least two of the remaining seven incumbents will be defeated. And the Mayor’s race? Robert Reichert has only one hope of re-election. He must somehow win outright on primary day. Unlike four years ago when he carried every precinct in the City, that’s not going to happen this time. In a runoff with either Brown or Ellis, Reichert loses. Unemployment in Macon jumped from 6.1% shortly before he was elected to the present 12.4%, and that figure is higher than both the national and the state average. The choices are stark. Everyone is afraid of an Ellis re-election and with good reason. I was a frequent critic while he was in office, although I must admit that he never resorted to personal attacks when he disagreed with me. Robert Brown is perceived to be like a silent sphinx, but he is more like another animal – an 800 pound gorilla in the room that some would like to ignore. However, do so at your own peril. I’ve been at this political game a long time and I’ve never known a more savvy votecounter. Who would have thought that Brown would have been able to secure the agreement of Senator Cecil Staton, a conservative Republican, for Brown’s Macon-Bibb consolidation plan? I disagree with a few of its components but I’m enthusiastic that someone has finally gotten this far. So here’s my prediction – Robert Brown will be Macon’s next mayor.

As I have written before, I am an officer of the Bibb County Republican Party so I cannot and will not endorse any Democrat that is running for office. I can ask you to remember the eight years before Robert Reichert was elected Mayor of Macon. I can remind you how much of a laughingstock Macon became under Jack Ellis and his antics. From writing a letter of support to Hugo Chavez to racing down Vineville Avenue with a red light on top of his car pretending to be Barney Fife, Ellis had us on CNN more than Larry King. I can also remind you of former Senator Brown’s racial attack on State Senator Eric Johnson on the floor of the Georgia Senate all because Johnson dared to sponsor a bill that mandated legislators to pay their taxes, which by the way Brown, for health reasons, couldn’t pay. (I shouldn’t have to remind you about the property taxes he refused to pay just this past week on a house that was GIVEN to him.) And don’t forget the “white sheet” comment that he snarled at Representative Allen Peake on Close-Up aimed at Representative Bubber Epps for daring to change parties. For some reason, I can’t recall any controversy that has occurred during the past four years of the Reichert Administration. On now to David and Elaine Lucas who have clung to a death grip of power in Macon for more than 35 years since Mr. Lucas election to the Georgia House in 1975, which alone makes it time for a change on his part, but you can also throw into the pot his divisiveness, rigidity and unyieldingness to compromise as a

recipe for a political goulash no community should have to eat for any length of time, much less since Gerald Ford was President. As for her part, Elaine has vaulted herself into the position of the most divisive of the divisive. “The People’s Candidate”, as she calls herself, has done nothing for our community except try and separate us racially and politically. Who can forget her rant against former Macon City Councilman Erick Erickson, as she called him “Erick Erickkkson” trying to link him to the Klan instead of trying to meet with him to work out differences? Instead she called him a liar, a coward, a carpetbagger and a “little man”. She’s a real agent of compromise, isn’t she? (In a lesser known rant, Elaine has called Mayor Reichert a “snake-oiler” and that her opponent Chris Horne is being financed by Reichert and the Republican Party, all of which she concludes with “The truth is just thatTRUE.” I sincerely doubt that she actually knows the meaning of the word truth as it certainly not in her vocabulary except to try and paint an opponent as a liar.) Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote “the wise know that foolish legislation (or in Macon’s case legislators) is a rope of sand which perishes in the twisting; that the State must follow and not lead the character and progress of the citizen; the strongest usurper is quickly got rid of; and they who build on Ideas, build for eternity; and the form of government which prevails is the expression of what cultivation exists in the population which permits it.”
