PUBLISHER’S NOTES by BRAD EVANS

would love if there was no smoking in bars. I’m allergic to cigarette smoke for one thing, but on top of that, I just hate cigarettes. One of the fondest memories I have of living in California is being able to go to big rock shows at places like The Fillmore West and not come home smelling like an ashtray. That said, I do believe that City Council probably has some bigger things to be focusing on other than giving venues a reason not to come to the Macon, and I don’t think there is any doubt that some business would be pushed into the County, if they too didn’t enforce a similar ban. So it’s a loss for laundry, a win for cancer, I guess. It’s not a terrible thing that this didn’t pass, but it might have

been if it did. Next up, Sunday Liquor Sales. Now there is something I can get behind. If we can’t tell people where they can smoke surely we can’t tell them when they can buy beer, right? If only it were that simple. If you are looking for something weird to do this weekend don’t forget about the Macon Bacon and Kazoo Festival down at the Georgia State Fair Saturday. Not to mention we could lose this fair if the attendance isn’t better than it has been, but they are trying to break a world record for the biggest potluck dinner hoping that over 500 people show up with a bacon inspired dish. No word yet on whether I’m allowed to eat bacon red velvet cake.

FRIDAY FEST MAY 6 BRINGS A FIESTA SCAVENGER HUNT TO DOWNTOWN

Sombreros, photographs, live music, and family fun all describe this weeks’ Friday Fest. This Friday marks the third annual Fiesta Scavenger Hunt in Downtown Macon where patrons look for posters while wearing sombreros, all for a chance to win a digital camera… and to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. This photo scavenger hunt will take place in downtown Macon all week long. Participants can pick up their complimentary sombreros from the downtown branch of Robins Federal Credit Union, located on the street level of the Fickling Building at 577 Mulberry Street, the week of May 2nd. Robins Federal will also have a booth in Third Street Park Friday, May 6th from 7-8 pm giving out any remaining hats. Participants will then take photos of themselves – in their sombreros – in front of the Friday Fest posters around downtown Macon. Then they will send the photos to MaconFridayFest@gmail.com by midnight on Saturday, May 7th. Participants’ names will be entered into a drawing for each photo they submit. The winner will receive a Samsung digital camera, compliments of Robins Federal Credit Union. There is no charge for participating. Other activities on May’s First Friday include a children’s inflatable from 5 until 7 pm on the fountain side of Third Street Park and local favorite, A2Z Band, on the stage in Third Street Park from 7 until 9 p.m. For a complete listing of Friday Fest activities, visit MaconFridayFest.com.

5/7 THE BIG HOUSE PRESENTS A SPRING REUNION WITH STILLWATER AND FRIENDS

T

he Big House Foundation is pleased to bring Stillwater featuring Sebie Lacey on vocals, Al Scarborough on bass, David Heck on drums, Bobby Golden, Rob Walker & Mike Causey on guitars to Macon on Saturday, May 7, 2011 to the Pavilion and Backyard of the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House. Gates open at 5:00pm, with the show starting at 6:00pm with opening act, The Dustin McCook Band. Tickets are $25 and include admission to the Museum. Bring your chairs and enjoy the beautiful setting. Food & beverages will be available for purchase. Formed in the Spring of 1973, the Stillwater Band played throughout the Southeastern States before signing with the Macon based Capricorn

Records in 1976 where they became “Almost Famous” and in 1977, the Stillwater Band recorded its first album titled simply “Stillwater”, which produced the hit “Mindbender” that found its way to the Top 40 billboard national charts. Stillwater’s second album “I Reserve the Right”

Saturday, May 7, from 11am to 3pm, enjoy the first Macon Bacon & Kazoo Festival down at Central City Park in the long building. Why? Because we like bacon, it rhymes with Macon and kazoos were invented here. We can break a Guinness World Record with just 500 people. If you remember, the previous attempts to have the world's largest kazoo ensemble brought out a few thousand (and still fell short). This one isn't just doable; it's delicious: World's Largest Potluck. To get the record, we need 500 people to bring some dish to share. Doesn't have to have bacon in it either--a bag of chips, some cookies, a 2-liter of cola, deviled eggs, whatever--but those who do will be in the bacon cook-off (aka -the Bacompetition). Whilst you're enjoying your grub, you'll get to listen to the folksy sounds of Good County People and the bluesy roots music of Mama T & Mark. And you’ll get a free kazoo upon entering. It'll cost you $10 to enjoy all that food, entertainment and fun. If you have kids under 12, bring them because they're free. You'll also get to spend the rest of the afternoon at the Georgia State Fair for free. Seriously, for a moment, this is a pivotal year for the Georgia State Fair. That hasn't gotten as much attention as the endangered Halls of Fame, but it's as real. The Georgia State Fair raises its own money--i.e.-no taxpayer money--and puts thousands of dollars back into local charities. It's not just a tradition that dates back to the invention of the kazoo (in 1852!) but it's the chief fundraiser for the Exchange Club, which puts that money right back into the community. Be local. Spend your money at the Georgia State Fair, take some friends, have a good time, and watch that money stay in this community where it'll help make this a better place to live. Ridiculousness or not. At the least, check out what they have this year: www.georgiastatefair.org

I’m thankful to Cal Garretson, owner of Calientes for taking me Turkey hunting recently. Though we didn’t get one, we stalked and talked to one for over an hour and got real close. Probably one of the most fun hunts of my life, besides that 350 pound boar that tried to kill me and lost. I’ve been recovering from the Walden Weatherford wedding by reading my “Bradsmaid” gift from the bride and groom. Getting Naked with Harry Crews is a series of interviews with my favorite author, and the only work about him or by him that I didn’t already own. I’ve also been spending a whole lot of my time at the Bibb County Courthouse looking

was recorded in 1978, however, that same year Capricorn Records filed for bankruptcy and left the group without a record label. The Stillwater Band continued to tour with such groups as The Charlie Daniels Band, the Allman Brothers Band, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Wet Willie, Toto, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and many other top musical acts until 1983. “The amazing thing is that after 38 years of knowing each other and playing together is that we all still get along, says Causey and Lacey, and even greater is that people still enjoy hearing us play”.

over case files on a murder story I’m working on. Court transcripts, crime scene photos, and filed motions have become my life. I’ve got to say I’m enjoying it, maybe that explains why so many of my friends are lawyers. I’m a Jack Daniels fan, except when I have to buy a bottle. I switched to Evan Williams because of their $19.99 price tag on a half gallon. Then the guys at Vineville Beverage turned me on to Old Crow Reserve. It’s even cheaper and pretty damn good, and aged an extre year longer in oak than its predecessor. ($12.99/750ml)

I’m looking forward to seeing “Rock the Bells”, Tuesday May 10 at the Capitol, part of the Rock and Roll Picture Show series, if only to see what ODB does. In 2004, hip-hop promoter Chang Weisberg proposed reassembling all nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan for a final concert, which filmmakers Denis Hennelly and Casey Suchan captured in this special documentary. Despite dealing with broken equipment, an overworked security detail and an unreliable band, Weisberg and his team created a one-of-akind show. The Wu Tang Clan ain’t nothing to mess with.

Sarah’s son Eliot runs to first base.

A KID’S HOME BASE SARAH GERWIG-MOORE

I

was never an organized sport kind of girl. Except for one season with the “Ballbusters” (no kidding—it was a co-ed t-ball team coached by two tough ladies), most of my childhood athletic activity involved climbing trees so I could read in them. But as a lifelong baseball fan—and mother to two active boys—I was excited about Dean and Eliot becoming involved with Vine Ingle

06 MAY 5 - 19, 2011

Little League. We’re wrapping up our second year with the league, and one of my greatest regrets is not having a flip camera for submissions to “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” The kids—mine and all the rest of them—started the season from a little behind square one. After several tries, one kid finally hit a ball off the tee… and ran straight to third base. Eliot preferred skipping between bases to running. When there’s a lull in the action,

both of mine do a little boredom dance I call the “right field shuffle.” Once, an ice cream truck passed by the field and everything – hitting, running, catching, attention—came to a dead halt until well after the truck rounded the corner. By the end of last season, though, the boys were starting to get it. They could hit a coachpitched ball, knew enough to run after a ball hit in their general direction, and ran bases in a counter-clockwise direction. They made friends on their team and still proudly display their trophies. This year brought some changes: Eliot stayed in t-ball, growing nicely in confidence and skill as a seasoned “veteran” on the team, while Dean moved up to Mighty League. This turned out to be a major transition: three strikes means you’re out (in tball, kids can hit off a tee [indefinitely] after missing three coach-pitched balls) and three outs means it’s the other team’s turn at bat (a t-ball inning switches after every batter has hit and run the bases). There’s no crutch of a tee, and other kids pitch. There’s far more of a sense of competition, and at the beginning of the season, we had tears (not to mention confusion) after strike outs. But that’s just it: this is life. A lot of folks have made baseball-is-life analogies, and I get those, too. For Dean in particular, this season has been an object lesson in the best ways to grow up. Tball offers pure fun and an opportunity to learn skills with stakes as low as can be. After a few years of this, though, boys in Mighty League further learn to value teamwork, to face consequences (but not too big—and not too soon), to fail and lose occasionally (but with grace), and sometimes—after a great deal of practice- to hit a “rocket shot” to the outfield (and accept with purest happiness his friends’ high fives). The next step up will involve new lessons—some tougher, perhaps—but still valuable, and learned when the season is right. Looking back after our second year, I get misty-eyed thinking about how far the boys have come in skills --both athletic and social. It’s hard to believe it now, but when we first started down at the ball field, Eliot (the youngest in the family and on the block inhabited by 11 kids) had a hard time waiting his turn, and Dean had a hard time paying attention to anything (except perhaps a Star Wars movie) for more than a few minutes. They’re still growing as players, of course, but with the help of remarkably patient coaches and the encouragement of their teammates and teammates’ parents, they’ve gone from newbies to players. They’ve also grown as young men, and I wish every child could have experiences like Dean and Eliot have had this season. P.S. I hope this hasn’t been too boy-centric. I live pretty squarely in the XY world, but for those of you with girls, the softball program is equally strong and adorable, and there was one tough little gal on a t-ball team playing against Eliot’s last weekend. Sarah Gerwig-Moore is a law professor at Mercer, Co-Chair of the College Hill Corridor Commission, and—most importantly—Dean and Eliot’s Mama.

NIGHTLIFE | the city’s best bets when the sun goes down

THE URBAN EXPLORER FIRST FRIDAY IS UPON US, ROCK THE BELLS, MULBERRY MARKET AND MORE BY SEAN PRITCHARD

A

s if it hasn't been said enough, I would like to extend a sincere congratulations to Jamie Weatherford and Jessica Walden on their recent marriage. The entire past weekend was a wonderful blur of friends, southern food, beer, and great music. I look forward to all they have to offer this community. To start things off, First Friday is upon us and there is much to be done in Downtown. The 567 Center is hosting a free art opening with live music in their newly renovated Gallery Stage. If you're looking for something a bit later on in the night, Element, Bottom's Up, Rookery, AND Hummingbird all have some sort of party going on, from live bands to DJ's. Saturday night marks the return of the glorious creature known as FlocoTard to The Hummingbird. Familiarize yourself with such things by getting to the Bird around 10:00pm. Just make sure not to find yourself falling in the fountain on Poplar St. because Mother's Day is Sunday. Meet your mom at Edgar’s or the Rookery for their famed Mother's Day Brunch. The following Tuesday night you will find me at The Capitol Theatre for "Rock The Bell's", a documentary about Wu-Tang Clan. What could be better? Wear a rock/rap t-shirt and get a discounted admission. Following the film, you should join me at The Golden Bough on

Cotton Ave. for The Memphibians, Renee Is A Zombie, and Macon's own Under The Gazebo. It's going to be electric. Also. Remember this one important detail of exploring Downtown Macon: The market meets in the park on Mulberry St. every Wednesday. This is your best chance of getting the freshest, locally grown fruits, veggies, and meats from some really cool people. So despite the fact that everyone between the ages of 15 and 22 seems to be caught up with school finals, such tests are nothing more then reasons to get out and explore Macon. Forget the earplugs I recommended in my last column and stay out until your ears are ringing and your friends have all gone home. Make some new friends. If I can offer any solid advice for making sure your explorations are successful, it would be to have an open mind and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Downtown is not limited to one single street, though it often feels that way. On one five minute bike ride from the Corridor to Downtown, you'll pass four local restaurants, three clothing stores, art galleries, a record store, a bike shop, two coffee shops and a handful of wide open spaces perfect for lounging, frisbee, or just about any other activity. Get out and about and find out why Macon has what it takes to be a supportive and highly successful community.

Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah, is a Ghanaian born-American professional wrestler, currently signed to WWE where he is the current WWE United States Champion.

LISTEN UP TO KOFI KINGSTON Tell me how you got into wrestling? Being in the WWE is something I always wanted to do. I used to watch Sean Michaels, Rickey Steamboat. I wanted to be those people. It wasn’t until I finished college, that I decided to pursue this. We’re all told that once we finish college we’re supposed to do something that works, instead of doing what we love.

Randy Orton that was awesome. To be in they’re with someone of his caliber. C.M. Punk on my team is great. It just depends on what I’m doing. Anyone I can go out there with and tell a story with, when we can get immersed in that story, it’s just a lot more fun that way. Anyone who hasn’t been to a show is going to be really impressed

What’s been your favorite moment so far in the ring? To be honest, there is a few. My debut, for ECW, it was just so surreal to me that it was all happening. When I won the intercontinental title a little after four months when I started. Wrestlemania, I mean it doesn’t get any better than that. Anytime

What’s it like out on the road these days? How do you travel, where do you stay etc is it hard? To be honest, it’s a little easier for us. We have so much technology; we have GPS to know where to go. The company books us plane tickets, and once we get there we’re on our own. We come from all over the country.

What made you go with Kofi Kingston as your persona? I was doing the whole Kofi Kingston character before I got signed. It’s important to me to do something that is entertaining and that stands out. I realized that there was never a Jamaican character in WWE, so I went with it, and people liked it. Who do you enjoy working with the most? So many. I’ve had a few with

The RAW Wrestlemania Revenge Tour will take place at Macon Centreplex Arena on May 7. Nine huge WWE matches including two championships on the line. This will be a live event hosted by WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Kofi Kingston will battle with CM Punk and John Cena will battle The Miz for the WWE Championship. Admission is $15 and up, call Ticketmaster box office at 800-745-3000.

They have also been the first reggae band to tour new territories on many occasions, including Africa and the Far East. The anchor of the band and only original member is Aston “Family Man” Barrett, who in addition to being Marley’s most trusted lieutenant, played on countless other classic reggae hits throughout the seventies.

SAT. MAY 7

Mag Tard & Floco Torres @ The Hummingbird Stage

Two of Macon’s hardest working bands will be together for one unforgettable night of music this Saturday at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom. Gearing up for the impending release of their second full length, Did you mean mustard?, Mag Tard bring their unique blend of awesomeness to the stage to close out the evening. According to Mercer’s newspaper the Cluster, Mag Tard’s set at the recent Big Bird Bash was the most memorable one of the entire day. Fresh off the release of both Floco’s Modern Life and the Ralph “Big Head” mixtape, the one and only Floco Torres opens the show.

Stillwater @ Big House Museum

Food and beverages available on site, no coolers please. Tickets $25, gates open at 5pm, concert starts at 6pm. Stillwater was an American band of the 1970s, which played Southern rock with a folk flair. Their song Mindbender charted in the top 100 singles in 1978. The band existed from 1973 to 1982 and was based in Warner Robins. They released two albums on Capricorn Records, Stillwater (1977), which included the single “Mind Bender”, and I Reserve The Right! (1979). They opened for such bands as the Atlanta Rhythm Section and the Charlie Daniels Band. They broke up shortly after the loss of Capricorn Records, but regrouped in the early ‘90s and have been playing ever since.

Matt Moncrief @ Billy’s Clubhouse

Matts signature style of growl and guts, strum and strike, rhythm and raw is versatile enough for the quaintest of coffee shops and one-man barstool gigs to the heaviest of rock stages and tough-love audiences. Maybe thats why he was voted the 2006 Macons Favorite Rock Artist in the 11th Hour Readers Choice Awards. Like all

HYMN FOR HER @ THE ROOKERY driven musicians, Matt Moncrief is constantly seeking to share his music, broaden his audiences and make a livelihood of a talent that continues to live alongside him

Brooks Brothers @The Shamrock

I get to hear Tim Brooks brother Gregg once a year at Skydog fest, and it is magnificent. He has the Look, the road weariness, and the voice of someone that should be famous. That he’s not is pretty astounding. Put that alongside Tim, maybe the best guitar picker in Macon, and you’ve got something you might want to go see.

THUR. MAY 12

Hymn for Her @ The Rookery

Lucy Tight & Wayne Waxing are “Hymn For Her”, a band that hails from anywhere they can park their trailer.H4H live, tour and record in their 16 foot, 1961 Bambi Airstream (comes with dog and baby). Their new release, ‘Lucy & Wayne and THE AMAIRICAN STREAM’ was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S tour. They stopped at various campgrounds and friends driveways between shows, set up their gear in their Bambi/home recording studio, rolled tape and rocked out. Armed with 2 bullet mics, a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box, banjo, dobro, bass drum, hi-hat, and harp, this ‘lil duo causes massive earthquakes wherever they play.

FRI. MAY 13

Capt Midnight Band @ The Bird

Backed by a rhythm section that can’t been any tighter, the Captain and keyboardist/vocalist Lil' Rae Rae filled the room with guitar driven Frank Zappa-ish sound playing their songs Instant Buzz' and "Jug of Wine" while channeling a retro Prince Mongo-type party vibe.

Chris Hicks @ The Shamrock

hris Hicks is a bluesy Southern rock guitarist who has played with Gregg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band, among others. Based in Macon, GA, where he was inspired by Otis Redding and James Brown, Hicks played with his band the Experience at various blues festivals around the South. His group opened up for Steppenwolf and Charlie Daniels during the 1980s, and later that decade, Hicks was asked to join the Outlaws. After the Outlaws disbanded in 1996, Hicks was the lead guitarist for the Marshall Tucker Band for one year before he became a solo act, with 1998’s Funky Broadway.

After all, that's exactly where Charles Walker, the band's singer and front man, first cut his teeth as a performer. Soulphonics & Ruby Velle are a funk, soul, and R&B group based out of Atlanta, GA, and have been a slick addition to the local Atlanta scene since early 2008. Tickets $10/$12 dos. 11thHourOnline.com

SAME CITY MORE PARK More and more, in a place like this, we feel ourselves a part of wild Nature,, kin to everything. – John Muir

MACON’S WILDLANDS NETWORK - SARAH GERWIG-MOORE

This year, make a resolution to be a little more wild (the hiking boot and sunshine kind, not the dancing shoes and illicit substances kind). That’s what John Davis of Wildlands Network did. This February, he shoved off in a canoe in Key Largo, Florida, to begin a human-powered adventure that will take him all the way to the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec. This trek— TrekEast, as it is called—covers over 5,000 miles of rivers, parks, swamps, mountains, and other wild spaces that, if connected, could become America’s Eastern Wildway. Why is he doing this? Davis and Wildlands Network would inspire us to care about connecting nature to nature along the Eastern Seaboard. In the words of its mission, “Our favorite wild places are shrinking. Protection through connection is the answer to saving them for future generations. “ A lifelong conservationist and outdoorsman, one of Davis’s other goals in this trek is to meet with other experts and enthusiasts along the way, to learn about local plant and animal species, and to explore efforts at environmental conservation. His trip is not the shortest distance between the two points; rather, Davis is snaking through places of interest, doubling back, winding around, gathering stories and sharing them to help inspire others to care about networking habitats and wild places that are currently somewhat removed from one another. His adventure led him through Macon a few weeks ago. A preliminary map routed him around the City, but information about an effort toward expanding park lands and connecting wild spaces along the river led him straight here—to a classroom at Mercer Law School, to Bond Swamp, and to the Ocmulgee Monument.

Macons Wildlands Network

14 MAY 5 - 19, 2011

In a beautiful coincidence, Macon has already begun its own effort to connect wild spaces to one another—perhaps out of a different original motivation, but nonetheless with the same impact and intent. Begun in a class at Mercer, a non-profit organization—the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative-- has formed with the intention of expanding the lands held locally by the National Park Service and elevating the Monument’s status to a National Park and Preserve. For years—even decades-- individuals and organizations have preserved green space here and bought land there—along the river or near Traditional Cultural Properties. NewTown Macon and the Friends of the Trail have stretched a paved trail along the river into a longer network of biking and walking trails along the Ocmulgee, with plans to link to the National Monument and to expand northward as well. Chris Watson of the National Parks Conservation Association performed doctoral work at the University of Georgia towards the feasibility of the expansion of the Ocmulgee National Monument and has long been supportive of the expansion of the Ocmulgee National Monument. And there have been many other quiet visionaries who will never receive recognition for important preservation work. Until recently, however, many of these efforts have been more narrowly-focused. This new initiative has one ambitious goal in mind—and Board members know that they need to collaborate both within and without. Jack Sammons, who led the beginnings of this renewed effort through a course taught at Mercer Law School, has long been involved in the preservation of green places and cultural properties. This semester, he and eight students met twice a week to learn about existing efforts toward the development of the Park and Preserve, speak with local leaders, and develop a sustainable plan for moving the idea forward. Students divided up work—with some focusing upon Board outreach and development, some working on securing nonprofit status, and others concentrating upon the impact upon

existing stakeholders, including hunters, conservationists, and land owners. Working as both an activist and teacher, Sammons explained, “My job was to structure their own experiences in such a way that they had the highest pedagogical value. That’s an interesting, and at times difficult, challenge, but a really enjoyable one when you are working with people as delightful (and as uplifting) as these students were.”

T

What is the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative?

he mission of the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative is “[t]o advocate for the expansion of the Ocmulgee National Monument and its eventual integration into the larger network of public lands in the Ocmulgee River corridor south of Macon to form a new Ocmulgee Park and Preserve. We seek to preserve historical, cultural, and environmental values, while simultaneously providing the economic and other benefits of a National Park to Middle Georgia and beyond.” Brian Adams, Macon native and President of the ONPPI Board, emphasized, “Many people have invested countless hours into this project and I am happy to be a part of this continued effort to conserve such an important part of our history. The natural and cultural resources that are in the Ocmulgee corridor need to be preserved for generations to come and I think the creation of our new non-profit will be a big part of making that happen.” Cooperation is a hallmark of the project, which all agree will take several years to realize. The complicated process of land acquisition, special resources studies, fundraising, and political advocacy requires concentration and perseverance of all the interested parties and organizations. Adams reiterated, “This will be a collaborative effort with the National Parks Conservation Association, The Georgia Wildlife Federation and many others.” The group—a working Board with a number of committees—has strengths in energy, information, and connections, with intentions of building financial resources. In advocating for support (moral, political, or financial), it can highlight little-known facts, such as the fact that in 2004, the Georgia General Assembly passed a resolution of support to the creation of a National Park and Preserve, and that the original authorization for the Ocmulgee National Monument was for two thousand acres (only seven hundred acres were acquired). It plans to tell the economic Cinderella Story about the radically positive impact a National Park can make upon proximate communities through tourism and travel, and of course ONPPI will pitch the importance of preserving for the future our significant, if dwindling, natural and cultural heritage. “Wild spaces matter to our country because at the time America as it is known today was created, almost all of this beautiful nation was wild. With suburban sprawl and an ever-increasing population, true wilderness is rapidly diminishing,” explained Melinda Banks, a law student committed to the initiative. “To see this kind of natural wilderness that supports so many different species, provides unique and disparate natural habitats within one area of the state, and offers untapped recreational opportunity is a unique opportunity to preserve wilderness for both our animal and human citizens of Macon and would truly distinguish our city from any other in Georgia.” Still, there are challenges, admits another law student, Herb Cranford. “I think our main challenge is creating awareness and dispelling preconceptions. For example, I suspect we will have to push back against fears of a casino, fears that the federal government will be taking citizens' land, those being only a few. This project is ambitious, but why shouldn't it be?” CONTINUED ON PAGE 27

FINALLY, JAPANESE HIBACHI AND SUSHI DOWNTOWN Tiffany Mitchell and business partner Peter Jung have worked locally serving up Japanese cuisine, Peter as a sushi chef at Shoki with over twenty years experience. So when an opportunity came a knockin’ by way of an empty storefront downtown, the two both saw the need for and demand of a fine Japanese restauruant and sushi bar in downtown Macon. Ninja Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is now open across from Tokyo Alley in Mulberry Street Lane. Currently only open for lunch, they plan to extend into dinner dining hours in a couple of weeks, staying open until 11pm on weekends. They also hope to have their liquor license by the end of May and will be able to provide a full bar to their patrons. But what this place needs is support now, so swing by this week for lunch to try any of their hibachi and fresh sushi options. Open until 3pm Monday - Friday.

The Cannonball House is diligently searching for Chocolatier’s who would like to compete in our “Chocolate Challenge”, culinary competition which will be hosted by The Cannonball House. Cost: $10 entry fee for each recipe

TAKE THAT, BIG OIL As an Intown resident, councilman Larry Schlesinger is happy to live in a personal and professional world that is geographically small.... and hilly. LARRY SCHLESINGER Macon City Council Ward 3, Post 1

or months, we’ve all heard talk about rising gasoline prices at the pump, and lo and behold and just as predicted, they’ve now arrived. I was absolutely stunned when it cost me over $60 to fill my tank last week. So with the price of gasoline now hovering around $4.00 a gallon, and with additional increases looming on the horizon, I think it time for all of us to consider our alternatives. I consider myself somewhat lucky to live in a personal and professional world that is geographically small. I live in Intown Macon near Mount de Sales, Temple Beth Israel is located nearby, and from there, Macon City Hall and the majority of establishments, meeting places and hospitals that I frequent regularly are just a stone’s throw away. When the warm weather arrived earlier this spring and with gasoline prices already on the rise, I decided to bicycle whenever and wherever possible. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the College Hill Corridor project and

commission, I’ve noticed that bike racks throughout the area are much more prevalent and accessible than ever before. In the days of my youth, my bicycle was my favorite toy, and as a student at the George Washington University in Washington, DC back in the early 1970s, I rode my yellow 10speed Peugeot to and from the record store in Georgetown where I worked several days each week. So I decided to bring this same 40 yearold bike out of its storage; I had it serviced and fine-tuned at Cherry Street Cycles downtown; and I got back on it for the first time in quite a number of years. It did not take me long to discover that I am no longer the 20 year-old college student that I still pretend to be. Initially, I found the ride from my house to Temple Beth Israel, City Hall, and downtown Macon to be rather easy exhilarating; it was downhill all the way, and I was initially convinced that I had effectively outwitted Big Oil with this clever, alternative plan. Going back uphill on the bike, however, turned out to be something completely different. I guess I never really realized just how

NCAA tournament during March Madness. We both blew that one. But I have to give credit where credit is due. President Obama did a stellar job in overseeing the hunting down and execution of Osama bin Laden. Since September 11, 2001, every citizen of the United States has lived in fear that “Insane Osama” would launch another attack on innocent Americans. Everyone in our country can now breathe a giant sigh of relief thanks to the Navy Seals and the CIA operatives that brought down the kingpin and head of Al-Queda. Even Muslims are glad this scourge is gone as they now don’t have to worry about him being the poster child for the Muslim world. I have to warn people, though. He is not the only member of Al-Queda and it is my fear that someone else will rise up through the ranks of evil to lead another attack against the United States. So what can we as a country do to prevent it? The first thing we can do is never, ever let our guard down. We should all be happy as hell in the long lines at the airports and the invasive pat-downs and scans that we are subjected to. Is it a little overboard? Probably so. However, I would much rather hear of a 80 year old man complaining about

steep Poplar Street actually is, for even in the bike’s lowest gear, pedaling uphill at my age turned out to be something akin to a stress test, and when I finally made it home huffing and puffing, I realized that this particular alternative was just not the ticket that I was looking for, especially with the oppressive heat of the summer coming our way soon. Determined and undeterred, I turned to the wisdom of the World Wide Web for advice and direction. There and thanks primarily to Google, I discovered for the first time the actual existence and availability of electric bicycles. These bikes have small factory installed motors that are powered by rechargeable batteries that, at the touch of a button, kick-in and propel the rider along, or in my case, up a hill. Convinced that this might actually be the ticket, I proceeded to investigate as many makes and models as I could find that are currently available in the marketplace. Ultimately, I decided to purchase a Pedego step-thru electric bicycle directly from the company and factory itself (The nearest authorized

a member of the TSA groping him than read his obituary in a stack of others because the guy behind him had an explosive device hidden in his shoe. I would rather hear a mother complaining that there’s no way her infant could be smuggling a bomb on an airliner than to hear about how this precious gift of life from God was snuffed out because another parent’s hatred toward the United States led her to pack her child’s stroller with weapons so that they could ram that airliner into the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta or crash into The Ted during a Braves game. The second thing we should be doing is pulling our troops and energy out of Libya and focusing on Pakistan. For all intents and purposes, it appears that the government of Pakistan knew that bin Laden had been hiding in Abbottabad for awhile. Further, we should cut all economic help to this country and consider them enemy number one in the fight against global terrorism. The United States has given Pakistan over 20 billion dollars over the last year. I ask why in God’s name should we be giving money to a country that aided and abetted our greatest threat to our national security? And getting back to Libya, we are helping terrorists get rid of a terrorist. Let them work that garbage out themselves. I say we focus on Pakistan. All that can do is strengthen our ties with India as well. I would much rather have 1.2 billion allies in India than possibly 126 million terroristic sympathizers in Pakistan. Am I saying that every Pakistani is a terrorist or a sympathizer? No. I am saying that I would rather take my chances with the country that spawned Gandhi than one that hid bin Laden. Even

dealer is in Chattanooga.). Don DiCostanzo, an owner of the company, was very informative and extremely patient and personable with me, and he offered me the best price for the bike that I wanted. This bike is never going to win the Tour de France, but it does have a detachable lithium ion battery pack that can also be securely key locked into place on its rack in the rear. It also sports front disk brakes, a hand throttle control, a rear wheel lock (so no one can just ride off with it), and the added riding comfort of Schwalbe balloon tires. Depending on rider weight and/or terrain, it is capable of 15 – 30 mile-distances all by itself on a full charge. This Pedego electric bike is almost as cool as a motorcycle (which I also own), but I find it much better suited for, and a lot easier to handle in and around a city such as ours. It gives me the boost that I need to rather effortlessly scale our hills, so weather permitting, I’m now Going Green! Take that, Big Oil!

the liberal lefts’ Rachel Maddow said that Pakistan was the ‘real sponsor’ of bin Laden. My God! I can’t believe I’m even agreeing with Maddow now. Has the world gone completely crazy? Last, we should now bolster our homeland security and shut our borders; at least temporarily. I have long been an advocate of making the Border Patrol a separate wing of the armed forces and give them everything that they need to secure our country. Now is the time to do it so that we can actively enforce not only the war against terrorism on our home soil, but also the war against drugs. The wall is a great idea; but why not reinforce it with hundreds of tanks and helicopters lined up on our Southern border daring the drug dealers to try something. Where will the money come from? How about the 20 billion we just sent to Pakistan? This was without a doubt the most courageous decision that President Obama has made, as he went against his own policies in order to get bin Laden; however the real credit does squarely belong to the brave men of the Navy Seals Team Six, who got their target ‘Geronimo’. Will this make me even think of voting for President Obama? Hell no, and it shouldn’t you. One great decision does not make up for the thousands of other bad ones that he has made, but it does make me respect him more today than I did a week ago. Good for you Mr. President! Enjoy my praise now, because things go back to normal in my future columns.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT COUNCIL TUSSELS WITH MAYOR OVER SMOKING BAN – Mayor Reichert was bound to upset someone whether he signed it or not, but city council appears to be taking the veto personally instead of going back to the drawing board to hear from business owners and tweak some of the language, which is silly because the ordinance wouldn’t go into effect until September 1 anyway. BIBB’S LIKELY TAX HIKE – The commissioners took a gamble giving back the excess SPLOST money in the form of a 2mill property tax decrease—in the hopes it’d help get a new SPLOST passed, which it didn’t—and now they’re facing a $10 million deficit, which means taxes are probably going up… 2 mills. STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN enters the race for Mayor – The worst kept secret in local politics has been the notoriously media-shy Brown’s interest in City Hall, but you had to know something was up when he started placing billboards featuring him with President Obama. COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKS is a ten-year old nonprofit organization “seeking innovative health solutions” that grew out of the Medcen Community Health Foundation when its CEO, Ethel Cullinan, brought together a coalition of 100+ regional leaders to figure out new ways to make central Georgia healthier. Lately, they’ve partnered with the city and Macon Roots to bring us the Mulberry Street Market on Wednesdays. city council. (Or for the State Senate seat mayoral candidate Robert Brown is vacating, which State Rep David Lucas is pursuing. Or for the State House seat Lucas is vacating so he can run for Brown’s old seat.) Seriously. We need new blood. Thus far, the talk about a “new Macon” is coming from people who have served two or more terms in office already. (Shouldn’t they have been working on a “new Macon” at some point in the last decade… or two?) On city council, more than half of our elected officials have served two or more full terms, including Ed Defore (elected 1971), Elaine Lucas (elected 1991, plus four years from 198387), Charles Jones (elected 1999) and James Timley (elected 1999). Of course, a long tenure isn’t necessarily a bad thing—in many cases, you want that kind of experience—but competition is the American way. It sharpens us through the friction of discourse between competing visions. At least it’s supposed to. So put June 6 on your calendar. That’s when qualifying for the primaries begins (aka – running as a Democrat or Republican) in the council and mayoral races. It’ll cost you $370.20 for a run at council and $3,105.02 for mayor. Or run as an independent, which qualifies from 9am on June 27 to noon July 1. You’ll also have to collect signatures. For a citywide office, like mayor or a Post 1 council seat, you’ll need 1,974 signatures from people “eligible to vote in the election this year to fill that seat” (aka – registered voters). For Post 2 and 3 seats, it varies: Ward 1 – 394; Ward 2 – 382; Ward 3 – 368; Ward 4 – 370; and Ward 5 – 527. (Your ward map is online at cityofmacon.net.) Whichever you choose, check out forum.ethics.ga.gov/category/candidatefaqs for details on things like filing your Declaration of Intent and reporting campaign contributions, etc.

dmit it…at some point, you have dreamed of living “the life of the rich and famous.” You are sitting in a million dollar mansion nestled on six acres with five bedrooms, seven baths, a stocked game room offering a vast array of games and six flat screens; and just outside, the swimming pool beckons you to take a dip—but you have other plans…a quick ride on your private ATV trail. Well, dream no more! The mansion really exists and is waiting for you on Lite-N-Tie Rd. in Gray. All you have to do is take advantage of a raffle that promises to benefit multitudes of Middle Georgians. The tickets, available for purchase until June 4, are just $100 and offer the chance to help local youth go to college while giving you the chance to win prizes rivaling the lottery! Second, third and fourth place prizes are also big ticket items. Second place wins a 2011 Chevy Cruze from Youman’s Chevrolet. Third, fourth and fifth place prizes are a $2000 shopping spree; a $1000 shopping spree and a Dell laptop computer, all compliments of Ken’s Stereo Junction. The Motivating Youth Foundation was founded by former NFL player and Central High School graduate Roger

Jackson whose goal is “to educate, mold, create, and challenge our youth to strive, compete and maintain a healthy lifestyle and body.” The center is located at Davis Homes and operates with the effort of 22 volunteers from Mercer University, twelve paid/certified teachers and the support of Jackson’s former coach, Dan Reeves. The program has grown, offering 96 participants the opportunity to excel in school through tutoring, motivation, rap sessions, character building, individual and group mentoring through social and athletic field trips. The positive impact of this program is measurable—presently, 78 students are on the honor roll (only five were originally honor roll students), that’s an 81% success rate! Graduating with a degree in Education, Jackson tells students that if he can do it, they can do it. “I came from the same environment,” said this former TIndall Heights resident. “I had people in my life, teachers and coaches who took an interest in me.” Tickets can be purchased at 100dollardreamhome.com or www.moyofoundation.com. See their ad for more information about the raffle and its prizes.

I really like the idea of being self-employed. How would I start my own business? If there were a flow chart for starting a business here, it’d resemble the blueprints for a new roller coaster at Six Flags. Or a plate of spaghetti. One benefit of consolidation is that it’d streamline the process of starting a business. And the more business-friendly we are, the more Macon grows because small business creates jobs and strengthens our tax base so we pay lower taxes, which

would help draw folks back within the city limits. But I digress. Think about this next time you get x-rayed at a TSA checkpoint by a million-dollar machine. Bin Laden figured out who really benefits from the war machine. He knew how to work its economic machinations very effectively (which is why he was holed up in a mansion and not some dirty cold cave). I cannot mourn Osama bin Laden. But I cannot celebrate his death either. He was just a man. There will be another. There always is. And our current glee makes a martyr’s death for this next man to stand on. This jubilation has nothing to do with those who lost loved ones in 9/11 -- when I read their responses to bin Laden’s death, they use words like closure, and relief, and justice, even peace of a heavy-hearted variety. They are not the ones dancing, laughing, waving at TV cameras. Such displays don’t honor the real losses, which are too deep for words of any kind. I don't get to tell those who've lost loved ones whether in the attacks or in the military how to mourn such a deeply personal loss. That is their grief to own, and it should have its space. But our public conversation needs to move in a serious direction now, asking the hard questions. I think it's our duty -- moral, patriotic, ethical and civil -- to do so.

AND

he rumor spread like a cold virus. I was at a conference when I first heard it, when a fellow conference attendee came into the bathroom with the latest Facebook gossip the woman killed during the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s hideout was in fact being used by him as a human shield. And it got worse she was one of his wives. I heard this story repeated twice before I could get out of the bathroom. And then I heard it maybe six more times in the next fifteen minutes as this writer made her way from group to group, repeating the news. Dead woman. Human shield. Bin Laden’s wife. The reaction for those hearing the story was uniform startled surprise. I didn’t know it at the time, but this wasn’t just some social

network bit of nonsense. It had come directly from the White House, and had been picked up by almost every major news outlet. Well, of course it had. It came from the White House, after all, which is supposed to supply facts to reporters when they share news, not just interesting supposition. The White House has since backed off a bit, using the word “may” a lot more judiciously at this writing. In other words, the rumors of bin Laden’s particularly cowardly death may have been greatly exaggerated. But why would anyone have been surprised? According to everything I’ve read about the man, bin Laden was exactly the type of person to snatch a human shield, and to see no distinction in snatching a woman versus a man, or even no distinction in snatching up “one of” his wives (I am especially interested in that modifying phrase “one of,” which implies an even more salacious depravity, as if bin Laden kept a harem for not only the usual wickedness but also as a final ring of protection but I digress). This story spread fast, faster even than

news of his death. It disturbed me, yes. But what disturbed me most of all was the satisfaction with which the story was received. As if it were proof of something, as if a deeply held belief had just been vindicated. Which seemed less about bin Laden as a person and more about something larger and less formed our collective ideas about evil and retribution. We got bin Laden, and he was every bit the nasty villain we knew he was. Which means it’s been worth every dollar we spent in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, every life lost, every TBI victim in PT or rehab or in a coma. Every waterboarding incident or other “aggressive interrogation” in Guantanamo Bay. It means we have been justified. But has his death changed anything? It‘s hard to make the case that it has. In a videotape released in 2004, bin Laden himself claimed, "All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations.” His agenda has always been to make us spend ourselves into a self-righteous frenzy.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 Davis later recalled the strengths of the area in his blog about his stay in Macon, and also identified some of the challenges ahead:

significant economic impact while at the same time conserving such an important piece of our history. The timing is right for this project to push forward and we

What was once the existing reality in Macon, the “City in a Park,” will now take effort and intention to preserve, let alone rebuild and expand. We will have to acknowledge the gift of lush green and running water right in the heart of our City. It will take recognizing the years it took for our natural spaces to grow up—and how we’ve beat them back and cut them down with relative ease. It will take working with those who’ve long supported waterways and parklands—men like Chris Sheridan, who said it “thrilled his soul” to think our parklands could move upward and outward. Adams sums it all up this way: “It is a beautiful thing to be able to promote

need to act now so this area will be protected for generations to come.” For more information on the Wildlands Network and John Davis’s Trek, including his fascinating blog that I hope will someday be a book, visit www.twp.org

Away from the river, the matrix is not wild. Ocmulgee is an oasis of naturalness in an urban and suburban and agricultural environment. Piecing it together into a large National Park will take many groups and many years. Ocmulgee National Monument itself, though at present only a square mile or so in size, will be a seed from which the larger park can grow. Protecting archaeological sites of the Muscogee Peoples dating back millennia, and also rich bottomland hardwood forests and swamps, Ocmulgee Monument attracts and inspires thousands of people a year, including school kids from Macon, to see the huge earthen mounds set before the expansive swamplands.”

Take part in one of the most exciting movements of our time. Together, acre-by-acre, we can connect our best wild places and save the wild creatures that are our extended North American family. Above, John Davis of the Eastern Wildlands Network.

Only a part of an Eastern Wildlands Network If John Davis and his contacts in Macon and beyond are successful, the ONPPI’s ambitious plan would become only a piece – though an important one-- of a re-created Eastern Wildlands Network. It could mean the return of species that have lost their habitats, safer passage for migrating animals, and the resurrection of biodiversity long absent from Middle Georgia. On his trek through Macon, I walked and talked with John Davis to hear his

impressions of our wild places and his thoughts on our efforts at preserving them. Like many newcomers to our City and surrounding area, he was impressed by Macon’s hospitality and natural beauty. On a relatively short afternoon hike through Bond Swamp and the Mounds, we saw deer, turkey, a tree frog, an Eastern king snake, and many song and waterbirds. It was a sunny day, and the azaleas and other flowering bushes were in bloom—the sort of afternoon on which it’s impossible to value expansion of concrete over the growth of trees.

DYLAN YORK THE WEEK IN PICS MY FAVORITE THINGS THE BLOTTER

THE SCENE

THANK YOU FOR NOT SMOKING Dylan York’s guide to getting down; elusive shows to his Trashed & ‘Stached capturing of the downtown scene “You guys sound like a cross between Tito Puente and the Bad Brains,” I was standing at The Hummingbird with the drummer for Stereomonster. The night before they had joined Elhae and Floco Torres to bring the house down at Bottoms Up. A few things about this excited me; Bottoms Up has garnered a reputation for being very mainstream and to have an Indie-Rap showcase like that was amazing. The venue itself had already impressed me in opening its arms to Floco and JuBee when the Street Party fell through. The second thing that impressed me is that

alternative Hip-Hop seems to be carving a foothold in Downtown Macon. It was Columbus native Stereomonster’s first show Downtown and they were well received. Michael Collins, bassist for Back City Woods, once told me he was asked about the Macon music scene and his response was, “There’s a great alt-Country and Bluegrass scene…and Dubstep.” Mike was poking fun at how out of place the latter genre seems here and at me for aiding in the rise of the Dubstep scene, but to a certain extent he is right. To the outside partygoer this may seem true; the

Peyton Anderson’s $250,000 investment helped underwrite a new Helms entrance next to Edgar’s Bistro and two conference rooms to accommodate program expansion. According to James K. Stiff, President and CEO, “Goodwill projects that Helms Career Institute at the Goodwill Career Campus in Macon will graduate more than 350 individuals into new careers annually by 2013. Helms will empower low wealth individuals with the portable credentials and experiential learning opportunities to help thousands exit generational poverty.” Above, Juanita Jordan, President of the Peyton Anderson Foundation is presented token of appreciation from Helms Culinary Student, Becca Underwood.

28 MAY 5 - 19, 2011

SCENE

Americana music scene has been established here for years and because of Dubstep’s rise to national prominence and the consistency of DSEL these two genres seem to be on top. However, the last few weeks brought to our corner of the city said Indie-Rap show and also a glitch breakbeat duo from North Carolina called Archnemesis. The night before they’d opened for Pretty Lights. It seems like different types of music are beginning to pour into our city as it becomes a stop on small regional tours; I’d like to see more alternative Hip-Hop shows happen and other genres of electronic music as well. For instance, let’s bring back Chillwave, at least for the summer. I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff like Best Coast and Neon Indian lately. My taste in music is pretty eclectic, but so is the taste of most people I know around here. There isn’t really a niche or a fad per se, just good people who like good music. I think the sincerity of what people like is a driving force and will be the reason for the longevity of what’s going on. So what’s really going on? I’m seeing more people getting down; things are literally growing right before my eyes. I started this column to jokingly instruct people how to party, while simultaneously giving serious insights into aspects of this scene that are seemingly elusive. Four months ago when I would shoot a party it seemed like people were off in small groups around the venue, now more and more people are crowding the stage. This is great, this creates a sense of unity, at least I think so. It also means I get to crowd surf every once in a while, which is scary because I’m 6’4. People’s disregard for personal space in a social environment means a sense of comfort has been reached.

Speaking of things that make people uncomfortable, the issue on everyones mind lately seems to be the smoking ban. On the one hand my libertarian ethic prevents me from ever endorsing such a thing. But the bright sides would be; my jeans won’t smell like the carpet in Tom Waits’ tourbus after a night of getting down. Yours won’t either. Austin, Texas is far more hip than Macon and they’ve had a smoking ban for a long time. We’re one step closer to becoming Austin, Texas. The 70% of citizens who don’t smoke will be more willing to dance with us. It’s important to stay positive in the face of adversity, so we’ll see what happens next. In all seriousness, hopefully this ban will result in bringing more people out who were reticent before. Atlanta’s had a smoking ban for a while, and they don’t have the pleasure of being able to legally walk Cherry Street with a beer (Only on Fridays, y’all). While there is always the potential threat of this being the first step in a downward spiral toward an Orwellian future, Soylent Green and Nexus 6 Replicants still seem far off. I’m more worried about my iPod becoming self aware and deciding it wants to play nothing but Papa Roach. That’s scary. Things are falling into place to be a beautiful summer. If you haven’t taken a cooler and a stereo to the river I highly recommend it. I also recommend making a playlist of nothing but Chillwave; Yacht remixes pair well with PB&Js. Next issue, river etiquette will be discussed. For a visual guide to what’s going on, and to get updates on where I’ll be shooting next, check out my social photography page “Trashed&’Stached” on Facebook.

the juvenile and charged him with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault. The juvenile was turned over to the juvenile authorities. Chad and Steve Logan received minor injuries as a result of the fight, but no one was reported to be victim of a gun shot wound.Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb Sheriff’s Office at 478-746-9441.

STOP THE HARASSMENT.

The Bibb Sheriff’s Office is investigating an aggravated assault that took place around 7:30 p.m. this evening, in front of a residence on Comer Terrace in Payne City. According to witnesses’ statements, Chad Logan 37 years old of Payne City and his brother Steve Logan, 40 years old from Macon, arrived at Chad’s house after work. Telvin Jackson age 19 from Macon was involved in a dispute with the Logan brothers over a financial transaction involving a motor scooter. Jackson and several other men showed up at Chad Logan’s residence and a fight ensued. After the fight was over, Jackson and the other men that arrived with him ran towards the apartments located on Brookdale Avenue. Chad Logan’s son, who is 16 years of age, ran into the house to get a handgun.
