TWO FUNERALS AND THAT THONG TH THONG THONG THONG

y grandmother passed away last week. Ninety-five years young, she’d raised six children on her own, which is still too taboo to mention in Cochran, getting by on wages from the Shirt Factory she worked at for 30 years. Healthy as a horse up until about six years ago, Ma Ma, (pronounced maw maw, where we’re from) had spent the last few years cooped up in a nursing home. She’s the same lady I wrote about not too terribly long ago, who’d survived the great hurricane of South Florida in 1926 only to find her mother and baby sister in a tree the next morning. She had 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. There was not a doubt among any of us, that if she had her balance right, we would still be getting her cooking on the holidays, instead of our uncle and aunts over the last several years. I’ve spent a great deal of space here in my newspaper romanticizing my family, and I’m sure my friends grow tired of hearing stories about them. I realized last week that I hadn’t seen many of them since I was really young. It was comforting to know they are all real, and as beautiful and awesomely crazy as I remember. For all their stories to goof around in my head for so long, means they have left quite an impression on me, and I think Maw Maw would be proud of that, even if her mantra of “be sweet” didn’t always stick. Her funeral was pretty. A grandson who is a part-time preacher spoke at the local Methodist church and a soloist with a rhinestone cross around her neck sang a song I’d never heard before. I would have guessed Bette Midler if I had to. All the daughters wore broaches that had belonged to my grandmother, all art-deco costume jewelery. I helped carry the casket to the grave, along with my brothers and other grandsons. We stood silently as they prayed a lot. I even closed my eyes. So a week later, and an hour and a half into another funeral at Unionville Baptist church on Houston Road, a

rather large black woman in an XL red thong that had worked it’s way out of her trousers and up her back stood up in front of me to praise Jesus, every thought of mourning Maw Maw was laid to rest. My cohort Jessica Walden, saw the eyes pop out of my head and knew that, I’m sure. We were at the funeral for Mr. Eddie Kirkland died on Feb. 27th

Eddie Kirkland, guitarist. The Gypsy of the Blues. He was 87 and had been hit by a bus, which is sad but appropriate for a man who loved being on the road so much. An entire side of the church was filled up with his children. Some people claimed he had 23 kids, some said 32. Southern writer Candice Dyer would say 72. I honestly don’t know what the truth is, and I like the legend more, so I’ve never bothered finding out. An eight year old with a guitar bigger than an eight year old played a song. C. Jack Ellis spoke, and brother Gary Montgomery had a message from Little Richard. The preacher talked about whoredom. He kept using Mariah Carey’s song “I’ll be There” as a metaphor for life. “All you’ve got to do is call his name” he screamed into the microphone, asking for an amen, “And I’ll be there.” That’s what the Lord said, he said. He talked about knees that shine like diamonds, about teeth with no spaces in them, and about putting up whoredom on the auction block. Then he actually auctioned off whoredom. I bid five dollars, but lost to some guy in the back for 15 bucks, I think.Ducking out after a good hour and a half of praising, I was glad I went. Glad that Mr. Kirkland went out in such grand fashion, and confident that with all those folks lifting him up, that he was in a better place. I just hope Maw Maw doesn’t run into him on the way.

Mercer to Present Play as Part of Anti-Poverty Conference

Pawpalooza to Benefit Macon Dog Park, March 12

M

njoy food, music and family fun this Saturday from noon until 4pm at Macon’s Dog Park located at the corner of Adams and Chesnut Street, one block over from Tattnall Square Park). AC Pup will be there along with dogs up for adoption from Greyhound Pets. A Blessing of the Animals will take place at 12:10 and 3:50p.m. to kick off the event and help close out the festivities. A doggie pageant for best male and female dog dressed in pink, most unique dog, and most talented will start at 2:30p.m. Agility training demonstrations will take place at 12:30 and 3:15p.m. Also enjoy Pink Paws vehicle painting, face painting, microchipping (available for free!) and much more. This event is free and open to the public.

ercer University’s Local Engagement Against Poverty (LEAP) Conference will present the play, “Nickel And Dimed, On Not Getting By In America,” March 17-19 at 7 p.m. and March 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Centenary Methodist Church, 1290 College Street. Tickets are $5 for the public and $3 for students. All proceeds will be donated to The Rainbow Center and the National Coalition for the Homeless. Reservations are not required; tickets will be available at the door. The play is based on Barbara Ehrenreich's best-selling book about the working poor and directed by Sydney Chalfa. It explores the world of minimum wage workers, which journalist Ehrenreich did by going undercover as a minimum wage worker to see if she could survive by working in a hotel, waitressing for $2.13 an hour, and working back-to-back shifts to pay her rent and buy her food. Ehrenreich discover that it is not the hardship to the knees and back that is the greatest hardship faced by these workers, but the damage done to the heart and the human spirit by the demeaning bosses and demanding customers. Although the play deals with serious subject matter, it is humorous and will provoke thought and discussion in the audience. Question and answer sessions with the cast and director will follow each performance. LEAP is a student-led initiative at Mercer that seeks to address poverty in Macon by contributing 10,000 hours of service to the community.

Tattnall Square Park set to get a make-over

n Tuesday, March 15, at 6pm, the College Hill Corridor Alliance will hold a public meeting at Joshua Cup to receive input on the preliminary concept of Tattnall Square Park. This is the concept constructed from previous public meetings, meetings with the CHCC TSP task force, and discussion with Parks & Rec staff, including the tennis director. The concept was also recently presented to City Council for comments. They plan on receiving public input from 66:45pm and then immediately breaking into a meeting of the CHCC task force dedicated to TSP. Take a look at the new concept below, complete with new play areas, a promenade and most importantly an amphitheatre stage with seating.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

Using a utility knife can be like having a knife fight with yourself. Since my wife got into the furniture refurbishing business, I’ve been licking my chops at Home Depot, and found the Milwaukee Fastback Utility Knife. It flicks open like a pocketknife and a big forefinger cutout lets you wield it like a scalpel. Meg’s new store, The White Elephant is located in the Payne City Antique Mall, booth number 76, and features some of the coolest repurposed goods this side of the Mississippi BTW. I’d check it out if I were you. Speaking of things that I’ve been licking my chops over, the Denon RCD-N7 receiver is a device I really wish I could have. It’s one of the first with the capability to accept Airplay, Apples new protocol that allows idevices to stream music wirelessly.

And while we’re at it, if nothing else mattered I might blow everything and buy the 865CC Triumph Scrambler. For $8,799 bucks, it’s a good buy and as cool as they come. One thing I really wanted that I actually got last week was the TaylorMade r11 driver. You can tweak the head angle to correct my debilitating slice, and you can adjust loft separately. I got a great deal on Ebay. Sure wish I would have noticed it was left handed. The greatest thing since sliced bread was just invented by Rupert Murdoch. Yeah, I know, me too. The Daily, an ipad app launched a couple of weeks ago may turn decades of traditional publishing on its ear. It is a concept of a recurring news service tailored for the iPad's millions of users (and automatically charged to a subscriber's credit card through

iTunes) is something the entire publishing industry will be watching while holding its collective breath. I’ve been a fan of Britsh songwriter Bobby Long for a while, and his new EP, Dirty Pond Songs, which climbed the UK folk charts to no. 8, is just awesome. Also, I got our press passes confirmed for this year’s Hangout Fest, Gulf Shores. With The Black Keys, Cee-Lo, The Flaming Lips, and dozens of other bands, this fest has done in its second year what it takes a decade for many to accomplish. And it’s right on the beach!

15 DAYS {family-friendly}

TIME-OUTS BYSARAH GERWIG-MOORE

A

s every parent knows, a child’s birthday is an event full of excitement on his end and nostalgia (for the past and future) on ours. It’s also an occasion involving a fair amount of negotiation. What kinds of presents are on this year’s RADAR? (Read: Will it cost more or less than my used automobile?) Most difficult for me, however, are the questions about where the birthday party will be. My kids always lobby for a certain venue that sounds and feels like Choke-Me-Please, and so far I’ve been able to avoid it successfully. Aside from the throngs of hyper small people, the flashing lights, the bastardized pop tunes (even worse than the originals, if possible), there are occasionally children simultaneously vomiting and playing battle video games. As much as my kids love it, it’s my ninth level of hell. On the other hand, the “home” birthday party, while avoiding strobe lights and crowds of germy strangers, has its downsides as well. First, your house gets trashed. Try as you might to contain the mess/ madness to a playroom or outdoors, it’s gonna get spread around. Second, your house gets trashed. Enough said. In my six years of planning boys’ birthday parties, I’ve come to love the outdoor-with-an-option-of-shelter idea. This is the antidote to video games, bright lights, and recycled air: fresh air, chase, tag, and dirt (mud if you’re lucky). True, weather in the spring can be a little tricky to predict, which is where a good pavilion (and perhaps a $1 poncho as a party favor) comes in useful. This spring, for my son Dean’s party, we reserved the Pavilion at Amerson Waterworks Park—a perfect locale

A PIRATE LOOKS AT THE BIRTHDAY PARTY DILEMMA

for a birthday party. If you haven’t visited this park for a picnic or canoe launch (or perhaps for the Fly South Music Festival), put it on the list. Constructed on the old site of the old (formerly flooded) water works, it stretches for acres along the Ocmulgee River. Parts are shaded, parts are in open fields. There are lovely views of the river, and even a handicap-accessible KABOOM playground.

Sarah with sons Dean and Ellot on a canoe trip last summer with Ocmulgee Expeditions. At Dean’s request, it was to be a Pirate Parrrrrty. Instead of video games, I planned a treasure hunt, with the party favors where X marked the spot. A piñata makes everything more fun, so we picked up one of those from Party City. But beyond that, snacks, and a cake, the only activity scheduled was a lot of free range play. From where I stand, that plus wine for adults is the recipe for a great party (or at least one where no one leaves with ebola or a migraine).

This is where I would usually tell you about how much fun we had. Alas, parenting both requires assertion of one’s own closely-held values (in my case: be outside rather than inside whenever possible) and occasional flexibility. At the last minute before our piratepicnic birthday party, Dean fell ill with a stomach virus. We’ve had to shelve the treasure maps and pack away the piñata until he feels better, but be assured that we’ll celebrate in true pirate form when he’s fully recovered. At least he wasn’t one of the culprits vomiting while playing video games? Whether or not you’re planning a birthday, the Park is a wonderful resource in our community. For river enthusiasts, there’s a launch for canoes and kayaks. Thanks to a partnership with the Museum of Arts & Sciences, there are opportunities for a number of environmental education courses for kids and lifetime learners (Exploring a Pond, River Pollution, Trees Galore). There are dirt roads for biking and plenty of fields and tables for picnickers. For directions to or more information about Amerson Water Works Park, visit OcmulgeeHeritageTrail.com. For more information about environmental education courses or to schedule a field trip, contact Amanda DePriest at 478.719.2559 or e-mail adepriest@masmacon.com. For canoe/ kayak rentals or guided river trips, contact www.OcmulgeeExpeditions.com or call 478. 757.8226.

15 DAYS The house at 306 Orange Street is located in a low-income area, which means that anyone spending $5,000 on repairs to a historic property qualifies for a state income tax credit. For the Moores, this translates into zero state income taxes being withheld from either of their paychecks for the next ten years. Also, a historic home rehabilitation qualifies for a property tax freeze at the value of the house before the rehabilitation, which for this house was about $100,000. “A regular home of the size of our Showhouse would have over $6,000 in property taxes each year,” said Rogers. “With the tax freeze for historic preservation, the Moores will pay less than $2,000 per year until 2020.” Beginning in March, 14 professional interior designers will move-in to the home and their work will be featured first at a party on March 16 and then throughout the Cherry Blossom Festival, March 17-27. With styles ranging from faux finishes to salvaged doors being hung on a wall above the fireplace, the Decorators’ Showhouse Tour will offer visitors an opportunity to see high quality design in a Victorian home. “We are excited that our home is being featured as the Decorators’ Showhouse,” said Heather. “It is hard to believe that over 1,000 people will be visiting our home

before we even move in.” Historic Macon hopes to welcome visitors from all over the country during the Showhouse, but the home at 306 Orange Street has welcomed new faces in for many years. “We spent a day at the

Courthouse and Washington Library researching the home,” said Andy. “Major R.F. Lawton who fired the first shot on the Star of the West - a ship carrying goods to Fort Sumter during the Civil War - lived in the house.” Over the years, the house changed hands and even served as a boarding house during the Great Depression. Historic Macon purchased the home in 2006 and began work in 2009, seeking in-kind sponsorships for the materials needed to restore the house. “I have been overwhelmed with how smoothly this project has gone. From selling quickly to over $40,000 in in-kind donations,” said Rogers. “I hope this project serves as a sign of good things to come.”

SPOT THE ‘DOT’: WHAT MAKES ART, ART? BY HEATHERLY DARNELL

I

recently had a conversation with my boss about the significance of certain types and works of art. He questioned the inclusion of a certain piece in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). This piece, as he described it, is a large orange dot on a plain white canvas. The title: “Dot”. I can understand his question and share some of the skepticism myself but my artistic background and training makes me less dismissive of the work as art. My immediate reaction was a remembrance of Kurt Vonnegut’s work of fiction, The Sirens of Titian, in which an alien robot has traveled across galaxies to deliver the most vital message of all. The evolution of the entire human race through millennia has been manipulated so he can eventually deliver this all-important message. Once he finds someone to receive the message, he opens it to reveal… a dot. In his language, the dot simply means “Hello”. I wonder when “Dot” at MOMA was created and how or if the two pieces possibly relate to each other. Part of me is thrilled with the thought that this huge painting in a museum references one of my favorite novels. Otherwise, I am divided with two responses. The first is that “Dot” is part of the conceptualistic art that draws upon the audience’s ability to bestow legitimacy on a non-art piece. Given its simplicity it could even be the artist’s intention to have the audience draw their own conclusions as to what it represents, or question why THIS is considered art. The reaction makes it art, and brings it closer to the realm of performance art: the audience

becomes part of the performance, and therefore becomes ‘Dot’ itself is representation of the unencumbered part of the “Dot.” vision of man; the ability to look inward through our My other response is based on various artistic repre- own perfect circle. sentations of perfection. Q&A ROMANTICA

The return of Second Sunday Brunch will take place on March 13th with the Minnesota rockers Romantica. The times are from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. David Higdon, an organizer of the monthly concert series, had a quick chat with Ben Kyle, lead singer of the group. I know that there has been a follow up album to America in the works for quite a while now. Is that album going to see its release before your stop to Macon? If you could see me know, you would see that I have a big smile on my face. Unfortunately, it won’t be out before our stop in Macon; it has been delayed a bit. Part of that is because I keep writing new songs, and I want to keep changing things. Some of the music isn’t there yet, and some of it I keep messing with, but it is in the works, but it isn’t quite there, but it is very close. Hopefully, we’re talking about the summertime. I wasn’t sure what music you were going to say that you liked going back to listen to. Are there any influences or bands that you find yourself listening to more and more at this point? I feel like I’m going to give you a really boring answer. Not that I’m not interested in new stuff, but I’ve been more into going back and listening to the classic stuff. Particularly, I’ve been going back and listening to a bunch of Van Morrison lately. That is the stuff that I go to when I want to be inspired. I know that I’m guaranteed inspiration. Or old soul records; some really classic stuff. When I listen to my music, I think, “What’s missing here?” At the end of the day, it is really whether or not the music has soul. Does it have that sense of soul in it? If it doesn’t, then it isn’t really quite there yet. Sometimes, it is

hard to pinpoint what exactly it is that’s missing. But the old records, the old Dylan records and Springsteen stuff; there’s just soulfulness about it. I’ll go back and listen to that stuff. We’re so excited to have the weather showing signs of changing, and we’re excited to have Second Sunday Brunch return in March! This is a wonderful event, and showcases talent in a setting that is much different than a typical bar scene. You guys have traveled all over, and from a musician’s perspective, what are some things that stick out at you about cities that have a successful music scene? I think that Minneapolis is a pretty good example of a community that has a thriving local music scene. What it comes down to for me, the people who do love and support new, local, and pioneering music, basically anything outside of the Clear Channel promotion, those people are the answers. They’re the ones who are excited about it, and who stay excited about, and they write about it, they blog about it, and they tell their friends to come out for it; that is what seems to me the essence and center of the Minneapolis music community. Those people make a difference, and the venues being able to step outside the box some in their booking of bands is huge. Of course, if you have a public or college radio station, I don’t know what you have in Macon, but here in Minneapolis,

we have five or six stations that are not for commercial radio, and they play all types of local music.

Wow. You guys are very lucky to have radio stations with a sense of music & personality. That outlet is very important in informing the public about what is out there. Doing the free shows that you guys are doing down there really helps raise awareness to the quality and the diversity to what is out there.

MUSIC

Saturday, March 12

Friday, March 18

After receiving the 1997 W.C Handy Award for Best New Artist, as well as two Living Blues Awards, Hart's 1998 release, TERRITORY, a rousing tribute to all forms of American music, received the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll Award for Best Blues Album (and it wasn't even a Blues album). In the summer of 1999 Hart teamed up with producer Jim Dickinson to begin recording START WITH THE SOUL. This record would be hailed as a new breed Southern Rock classic and Alvin's return to the "sacred garage". START WITH THE SOUL was chosen by the New York Times as one of the top 10 releases of 2000, as well as the BBC's Blues record of the year. A devout follower of the "no barriers" approach laid by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and the late great Doug Sahm, Alvin continues to defy the so-called purists.

On July 31, 2010, Allgood, the headlining act from the BRAGG Jam Festival in Macon GA, played to a sold out, capacity crowd at the magnificent Cox Capitol Theater. After the amazing reception they received it was inevitable that they be asked to return to perform once again in Macon. And so we are pleased to announce that they will be taking the stage at the Cox Capitol Theatre on Friday, March 18, 2011. Allgood, originally called Allgood Music Company, was based in Athens, GA from 1988 - 1995. Through eight years of constant touring with ever changing set lists and long improvisational jams Allgood developed a passionate following of fans. During that time they released four records and played before thousands as they became a fixture at festivals. and concerts across the southeast.

FRI. MARCH 11

Matt & Lewis @ Billy’s Clubhouse

Their shows although acoustic still have the fire and passion of a rock and roll concert. If you haven't seen this you are truly missing out. Peter Trundleburg with the Atlanta Daily Eagle described their show as " pure unabashed rock with the stripped down splendor of the original MTV Unplugged series." Emily Barchsendt from the Orlando Golden Messenger

Chris Knight w/ Aaron Irons @ The Hummingbird

After six years of perfecting his story songs about the downtrodden of small-town America, Knight came to Nashville and won a coveted spot on a songwriters' night at the Bluebird Cafe. He has since become a popular name in Americana music, releasing four more albums: his 1998 selftitled sophomore effort, 2001's Pretty Good Guy, 2003's Jealous Kind, and 2006's Enough Rope.

Monster Party @ Rivalry’s

Five guys that share a love of horror come together to play heavy music and the product is Monster Party, hailing from the small town of Warner Robins, Georgia. With a passion for metallic and melodic, the music created by a few friends having a good time is certainly something original and all in the name of fun. With theatrics and blatant passion for the music they play, a live Monster Party show is something to behold. Featuring everything from fake blood to smoke bombs, the band's live show has gained them love from adoring fans and has had them banned from a venue or two. Whether it be live or on record, the band seeks to play heavy music portrayed through a recurring theme of zombies.

Boom Chick @ The Rookery

Boom Chick’s ecstatic debut “Show Pony”

Monster Party @ Rivalrys (released November 2010) is shot through with all the love and bones you can pack onto twoinch tape, and revels in Frank & Moselle’s myriad influences, from their shared love of atomic 50's rock n’ roll, dirty Delta blues, reverb-laced surf rock and 60’s girl group melodies, to the bright torches they carry for the classic catalogs of Chess & Sun Records.

SAT. MARCH 12

Psyk Nyne @ Billy’s Clubhouse

One of middle Georgia’s favorite heavy rock bands the guys and little badass Misty on drums know how to rock a club. Winner of 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards for “Best Rock Band” go check these guys out.

Candy Coburn & Molly Stevens @ Cox Capitol Theatre

From the moment she hits the stage, you sense that Coburn is not your run-of-the-mill chick singer. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t count on her good looks to engage the crowd, but relies on her energetic delivery, true-to-life lyrics and a show that rocks. Perhaps it is the signature green guitars she uses for every performance. Whatever it is, it’s easy to see why Candy and her music are undeniably contagious.

Alvin Youngblood Hart @ The Historic Douglass Theatre See Editor’s Picks, above.

Tyler Hammond Band @ Wild Wing

With their unique southern rock sound, the Tyler Hammond Band has successfully revamped many country music covers, as well as collaborate to release an album of their own originals.

Their new release, ‘Lucy & Wayne and THE AMAIRICAN STREAM’ was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S tour. Armed with 2 bullet mics, a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box, banjo, dobro, bass drum, hi-hat, and harp, this ‘lil duo causes massive earthquakes wherever they play.

If you ask anyone who survived L.A.'s famed Sunset Strip scene about these guys, they'll pretend to have never heard of them, and they'll say something like, "Were they even born yet? Don't you see how young they look?" Girlz Girlz Girlz has reclaimed their rightful position as the torchbearers for rocking parties across the nation. Besides everyone's favorites from the heyday of '80s rock, they jam out the biggest recent hits with the same arena-imploding feel.

our love for each other is rare and beautiful, why shouldn't your celebration be? Gallery 51 provides a 5000 sq. ft venue to set a distinctive setting for most any special event. Above the dance floor floats a ten foot stained glass ceiling creating a beautiful backdrop for photographs that you will cherish and leave you in awe for years to come. G51 is filled with a decor unlike any other event facility in the area. Therefore, helping you save on decorations and giving you extra money to spend elsewhere. The whole reception area can accommodate 350 guests for banquet style and 500 for cocktail style. We can arrange to have your ceremony and reception at this venue and we also have an outside location for a ceremony if you desire. G51 is housed in a 22,000 s.f. warehouse which was originally a textile factory in 1967. In 2006 it was renovated into an Exclusive Facility Rental by the owners. The space has its original tongue-in-groove flooring throughout, brick walls and tall ceilings with its original exposed

metal beams. It carries a certain charm with an industrial loft setting. The remaining 17,000 sf of the warehouse is a full time, professional stained glass art studio, in which, the artists offer to design, fabricate and install architectural art glass to their clients all over the world.

The newest endeavor of G51, is the remodeling of an additional area into a contemporary chapel setting. With the capacity of approximately 275-300 guests this area will provide a long isle for the bride to walk down with a breath taking atmosphere. Its completion date is May of this year. Optional for the bride and groom are two handblown champagne flutes to toast with and keep as a memorabilia of your wedding day. Our glassblower handcrafted the glass in the Academy Awarded movie, "Sweet Home Alabama" with Reese Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey back in 2002.

Gallery 51 looks forward to helping you plan your special event, which will ensure you a flawless evening from start to finish. All over Macon, in the back of clubs, at house parties, concert venues and the changing room at Ginger Michelle, boys and girls are getting down. Since the dawn of time man has sought to perfect the art of getting down. This column will act as a field guide to getting down in Macon’s divinely complex scene, highlighting various key aspects within.

T

hrough examples, definitions of terms and memoirs this guide will become a valuable resource to turn to in the event that you, the reader, decide that getting down is a lifestyle you’d like to pursue. In the previous issue the promise of a guide to sneaking into afterparties was promised, however it was brought to my attention that I have too many friends who are promoters and club owners to write such an expose. Instead in this issue we will explore the term “getting down” and what it really means. Perhaps throwing you, the reader, right into the middle of Dubstep was jumping the gun. I apologize for any health issues that arose to any of you going to the Electric Social or DSEL Thursdays for the first time. A foundation must be laid first if we are to build and hone the skills needed to maximize the getting down experience. So what is getting down? Getting down is an umbrella term for anything done to maximize the enjoyableness of life and its social pleasures. Getting down can be done with one other person or hundreds of other people. Like every aspect of life there are downsides and upsides to get-

Roger Riddle spinning at 11th Hour after party

ting down. Hopefully, with the help of this guide and in-field practice, these potential downsides can be avoided. Music is simultaneously the backbone and heart of getting down. Many genres of music, little to none found on the radio, are available as a soundtrack to life. Whether you’re dancing to Electro or making out to Trip-Hop, music is an absolute must in order to get down properly. Exploring these genres make for a more fulfilling work day, and eat up time usually wasted staring off into space or YouTubing videos of kittens. Maximizing

DYLAN YORK’S GUIDE TO GETTING DOWN

your ability to get down may not seem like maximizing your workday, but it is. Investing in you is a key aspect of getting down. Optimal music to get down to will be discussed more in issues to come. Getting down, while on its surface may seem like a hedonistic ode to narcissism is in reality a heightened biological extension of socialization. This misconception arises from the desire of boys and girls who want to get down placing a special emphasis on aesthetic and longlasting awesomeness. Herein we find the difference between getting down and partying. Whereas partying is more mainstream and in the grand scheme of things lackluster; getting down is a controlled occurrence that seems to happen on the fly but lasts for hours. Texting and social networking are required to maximize ones night, which usually begins with dinner plans and carries on to some sort of afterparty. Those bent on partying will sit at home and play Xbox or watch TV until 11:30pm rolls around, then head to a club and be forced to pay a cover. The night will end at 2:00am, usually with Taco Bell. On the other hand, the hip kid will make dinner plans around 7:00pm with a few of his or her friends. A Mexican restaurant is a

choice spot because of its low lighting, free chips and salsa, and Friday night margarita specials. From here plans are made for the rest of the evening; texting is crucial here, the group will “hit up” as many people as possible to find out where the “place to be” is. Meeting up with friends at a venue early before a cover is charged, getting a stamp, then walking around is standard practice. This allows for maximized socialization with other individuals who want to get down. Reentering the venue usually occurs when the DJ is finished warming up and in full swing, dancing will ensue. Around 1:30am plans will be made for the afterparty at someone’s house; the night will end around 5:00am with peanut butter quesadillas. The morning after will be discussed in upcoming issues and will feature several backhanded compliments to JuBee, as well as highlighting the importance of sunglasses. Getting down makes for a much more fulfilling experience; but it requires skill and a good social network. If your last nightlife outing didn’t wind up on crazylastnight.com, stay tuned, this guide is for you. For a visual guide to getting down, and to fully explore the term hipsterazzi, check out my social photography page “Trashed&’Stached” on Facebook. Until next time, stay hip Macon, and remember…the new “trenta” size Starbucks cup can hold an entire bottle of wine.

MODERN DAY SLAVERY MUSEUM VISITS MACON

T

he Middle Georgia Alliance to End Regional Trafficking and the Sex Trafficking Opposition Project will co-host The Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum, when it comes to Macon March 20 and 21. Visits to the museum are free to the public. Institutionalized slavery may have largely gone by the wayside in the United States around 1865, but that does not mean it has entirely vanished. And on Sunday, a traveling exhibit outside St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, on the corner of Poplar and New Streets, will tell part of that story of how and where forced labor still exists in the United States. On Monday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the exhibit will be open on Porter Patch, on Mercer University’s Macon campus. The exhibit is called the Florida ModernDay Slavery Museum and consists of photographs, court papers and artifacts related to cases in which federal prosecutors have accused people of treating migrant workers — many of them illegal immigrants — as slaves. The aim of the show, organized by a nonprofit workers’ group called the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, is twofold: to remind the public that people are sometimes still enslaved and to pressure produce companies to contract only

VIEWS

There were also chains and heavy locks of the sort that had been used in some cases to shackle workers. This museum is an eerie reminder of how little we’ve progressed as a nation. About MG-ALERT The mission of MG-ALERT is to prevent and combat human trafficking in Middle Georgia and throughout the world through community education, victim support, and legal advocacy. The vision of MG-ALERT is a world where people are free from coercion, forced labor, and sexual exploitation, a world where people are free to choose their own destiny, and a world where everyone recognizes and respects the inherent dignity of every human being. In short, a world without slavery or human trafficking.

with harvesters who treat workers fairly. The museum collection is being transported and mainly displayed inside a white Freightliner truck of the sort that figured in one of the more notorious slavery cases in recent years. In that 2007 case, workers in Collier County, Fla., were locked overnight in the back of a cargo truck without food, water or a bathroom. Two

workers escaped through a ventilation hatch, and an investigation by the United States Justice Department resulted in 12-year prison sentences for Geovanni and Cesar Navarrete, who used the men to pick tomatoes. Court documents from that case as well as others were displayed in the truck, along with photographs of weapons used to menace workers.

About STOP Sex Trafficking Opposition Project is a student organization founded in 2008 at Mercer University. The organization seeks to raise awareness on campus and in the community at-large on the issue of sex trafficking and provide resources for political leaders, churches, and concerned citizens about combating and preventing sex trafficking in Macon.

The Audacity of HOPE: Needing Change to Stay Alive BY BILL KNOWLES

id I miss the section in the Constitutions of the United States and of Georgia where it states that all citizens are guaranteed the right for the government to provide a college education? Now I’m sure that this column will hack off a great number of students and parents alike who have been getting help from the HOPE scholarship program and are very unhappy with the changes that are being made to it. The fact of the matter is that the program was going broke and something had to be done to fix it before it completely disappeared from existence. I for one think that the changes that are being made are a very good thing for not only the HOPE program itself, but especially for the future Georgia students who will be utilizing it. Why is it so awful for a student to actually have to earn higher grades to qualify for a free education? When did it become an unalienable right of all mankind to be able to get a sheepskin from the University of Georgia for little or no money? In a page right out of his grandfather Jimmy’s playbook, newly elected state senator Jason Carter of Decatur argued on the Senate floor that, “It is a question of fairness,” he said. “There is no doubt that if we cut HOPE ... there will be some students who won’t graduate from col-

CELL PHONES AND DRIVING A DEADLY MIX BY TINA WHITTLE

STUDIES SHOW IT RENDERS YOU AS INCOMPETENT AS A DRUNK DRIVER

O

* It significantly lowers your reaction time. One study concluded that twenty-year-olds behind the wheel with cell phones had the reaction times of seventy-year-olds without cell phones. It’s like cell phones instantly age your brain fifty years. * It renders you as incompetent as a drunk

driver. Really. Multiple studies have demonstrated how. * It creates inattention blindness, in which you can be looking directly at a road hazard and not “see” it. It makes you four times more likely to be involved in a serious crash. * According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2009 over 5,500 people were killed and almost 500,000 were injured because of distracted drivers; one-fifth of these fatalities involved cell phone usage. * In a recent Consumer Reports survey, one fourth of the respondents said that they engaged in risky driving behaviors regularly, even though they knew of the dangers. * Hands-free devices are no safer than handheld devices. That’s because the problem is not just the distraction of using a cell phone — it’s that the part of your brain required to talk on one is the same part of your brain that scans your driving environment for hazards. It’s like trying to do two activities with one hand. You’ll do neither activity well.

* Having a conversation with an actual person doesn’t use the same part of the brain as having a cell phone conversation. Real conversations are much less distracting. * Laws that ban cell phone usage while driving actually increase the amount of accidents. Research suggests that the three-fold complication of driving, talking, and trying to hide the activity renders the driver even more incompetent. It seems that even making it illegal won’t keep some people from using their cell phones on the road. ’m pretty smart. And still, it took far too long for me to get the message that driving and chatting don’t mix. So I don’t do it anymore. I told my daughter that if she caught me answering my phone while I was behind the wheel, I’d pay her $25. I forgot once, and that was it for me. It’s a shame that I had to bribe my child to be a watchdog, that I couldn’t just drop the habit myself. It’s hard, I admit. But the science is clear. You’re a fool if you drive and talk on the phone, and you’re a fool if you get in the car with someone who does. The road is deadly enough. Don’t make it even deadlier. Put the phone away when you get behind the wheel.

I

AND

ne of our favorite things to do here at Whittle Central is kick back and watch Jamie and Adam on Mythbusters blow things up. Low-grade steaks, cement trucks, mannequins dressed like MacGyver — they‘re all cannon fodder. Of course, the point is not only about making lots of boom — each episode tests a very carefully crafted hypothesis, usually involving a common pop culture myth. Like, can a static charge from your cell phone blow up your car while you’re pumping gas? For the record, it’s very very unlikely that your cell phone could kill you this way (so say the Mythbusters). But that doesn’t mean cell phones and automobiles aren’t a deadly mix. They are. But while most people wouldn’t put a stick of dynamite to their ear and listen to the fuse sizzle down, most people DO drive with a cell phone pressed to their ear at some point. And that’s just as reckless, just as demented, and just as stupid. I don’t use the word “stupid” lightly. But there isn’t really a better word. It’s the word we’d use for people who get behind the wheel drunk, or stoned, or otherwise incapacitated. And it’s the word to use for people who drive while talking on the phone. Not me, you may think. I can drive and

talk at the same time. No, you can’t. You’re not special. You’re not unique. You’re not some multi-tasking savant. You’re just deluded. It’s true. Study after study has revealed this one fact — people talking on their cell phones drive worse than people who aren’t. But the most recent studies reveal something new — the people who drive and talk the most are the most likely to have no clue how badly they’re driving. They are the most blind to their errors. In other words, there’s a pretty clear correlation between how well you think you drive while chatting and how awfully you actually drive. Here are some other facts about driving while talking on your cell phone:

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

ASK WE-ONE C an you take this call from the pound asked my receptionist as I went flying past her with charts piled up to my chin. Oh sure I replied not really wanting to stop and interrupt my supposed important day. On the other end of the phone I heard a woman’s voice asking if we could possibly take care of an orange kitten for the weekend as the attending veterinarian would be out of town and they were not sure they could manage this one. I don’t see why not I said, what’s wrong with him? The voice on the other end of the phone hesitated and then calmly said, well some children set him on fire and so he is a little burnt, but we have to keep him alive because he is the evidence needed for the court case. Oh I said trying to comprehend how children could possibly do something like that. Well it should be fine if you can bring him over we will take care of him for a couple of days. That afternoon a police officer arrived with a cat carrier inside of which a pair of amber eyes attached to a little orange body peeked out at me. I signed the paperwork and was advised that this kitten must be saved as he was court evidence and under no circumstance could he be euthanized. No problem I said smiling at the little ball of fluff in the big carrier. My smile quickly changed to a solemn face once I took him out and started to assess his injuries. The front end was fine, you would never know that there was a problem, the back end was a whole different problem. From his waist to the tip of his tail he was completely burnt. The tissue was oozing and smelt rotten and was already turning black. The skin was crisp to the touch from where it was a full thickness burn, his rectum was bloody and swollen and his testicles were protruding through his scrotum. He could not urinate as the tissue was so swollen and sloughing off that his urethra was blocked. He stood there on a big white towel looking at me with huge amber eyes that were full of trust. I stroked his little orange tufty head and he pressed up against my hand wanting that human attention. He was probably only eight or nine weeks old and had already suffered the tragedy of the human spirit gone horribly wrong. I thought about my own children who will try and make me save every living creature that we find regardless of whether it is an insect or a mammal. My little boy rescued a cricket who had lost one of his big legs and couldn’t jump anymore. We had to set up a cage in his bedroom with leaves and a feeding

We-One arrived at Gadd’s Animal Doctors with his back half completely burned, some kids had actually set him on fire.

station for the nectar that he would drink all summer long. Then there was the lizard who was frozen solid outside the garage. He came running up to me and made me go and rescue the poor little guy as he called him. Cradling this frozen creature in my hand even I thought I had exceeded my capabilities of resurrection, but in an attempt to never stifle hope and compassion I agreed to try and save this little thing. We set up a box with a hairdryer and started the process of warming the body. I had my little lad watch the lizard for any signs of life. Suddenly I heard a cry of mom he’s moving. Not wanting to believe that this could ever be possible considering the way I had peeled this lizard off the tarmac I wandered over to take a look. Sure enough there was the heartbeat and very quickly after that we saw the miracle of life resurrected. It was a magical moment for both of us and probably appreciated by the lizard as well. The little orange tufty kitten arrived with a name attached to his cage, it was We-One. He lived up to that name for many months. Inevitably once we started treatment it wasn’t going to be possible to send him back to a facility that could not attend to his rather complicated needs. Over the next two years WeOne underwent numerous surgeries to remove dead tissue, surgeries to remove testicles and a tail, and urinary catheters and enemas on a daily basis to maintain the most basic of bodily functions. During all this time We-One enjoyed the benefits of antibiotics and pain management to go along with his special daily bandage changes (even on Christmas day for 2 consecutive years). Last month we realized that our special We-One who now was allowed the freedom to walk around the clinic with his fresh bandage britches was no longer progressing in his healing journey. He had grown new skin over 80% of his lower body but he still had three areas left, two on his back legs and one above his tail that would need specialized grafts that were beyond the capabilities of our clinic. The University of Auburn Veterinary College agreed to look at him for us and are currently working on trying to graft the rest of his damaged little body so that one day he will be free of his bandages. Animal Doctors has so far spent in excess of $25,000 in the care of this little guy with his numerous surgeries, daily bandage changes and medications for almost two years. Now we are faced with the daunting task of raising enough money to pay for the skin grafts and his care for the rest of his life.

He will need a very special home as he has problems going to the bathroom that will remain with him always and he will need medical attention above and beyond the routine. If you would like to make a donation for We-One you can send checks to Animal Doctors marked for the We-One fund and we
