GEARING UP FOR MaGa

ovies have been the perfect escape for me since I was a kid. We’d get rides down to the big three-multiplex down in Cordele, Georgia on Saturdays, where we’d find refuge in movies like Smokey and the Bandit, Soggy Bottom USA, and The American Ninja, BMX Bandits and Better off Dead. Even today, it’s not unheard of for me to go off the grid and jump movies all day long, on a cold rainy day. My wife would rather do the DVD thing, mainly because she can’t stand the sound of chomping popcorn all around her, but for me it’s just the perfect escape. I was naturally excited when the folks at MAGA started a film festival here. I was a little skeptical in those first years, when special guests included the oldest living cast member of Gone with the Wind, and a munchkin, respectively. I feared that elusive North Macon Crowd everyone tries to get downtown might dictate what we got to see at the fest, like it does for so many other events. (I’m looking at you Kinchafoonee Cowboys.) But since those first years, since they got past those growing pains, no event has surprised me more, and there is no event

any time of year that I look forward to as much as MAGA. It’s the only time of year when downtown absolutely fills up with the kind of people we need down there. This will be the first year of MAGA that I haven’t lived on Cherry Street, and I will admit, my forays to the area have diminished quite a bit since moving to the other side of town. But when the starting pistol goes off, I’ll be slinking around in the dark with a weekend pass around my neck faster than anyone. You should be too.

“A Streetcar Named Desire” directed by Chuck NeSmith will run from February 4 – 13. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critic’s Award, “Streetcar” ranks as one of the greatest dramas in the history of the theatre. In 1947, Broadway’s hottest young writer, Tennessee Williams brought a new play to Broadway. It was an exotic, erotic, passionate and dramatic story with performances so raw they changed the American approach to acting for generations to come. “A Streetcar Named Desire,” went on to become a major sensation on Broadway and in Hollywood.

Diane Roberts, commentator for BBC and NPR and author of Dream State, Falkner and Southern Womanhood, and The Myth of Aunt Jemima, will speak on Monday, April 11. Peter H. Wood, Professor of History at Duke University, will give a talk, “Near Andersonville: Winslow Homer’s Long-Lost Painting of an Enslaved Black Woman,” at the Mercer University Medical School Auditorium on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. A leading expert on Winslow Homer’s images of blacks, Peter Wood reveals the long-hidden story of this remarkable Civil War painting. He locates the painting’s setting in southwest Georgia in August 1864 and provides its military and political context. Wood underscores the agony of the Andersonville prison camp and highlights a huge but little-known cavalry foray ordered by General Sherman as he laid siege to Atlanta. Homer’s image takes viewers “behind enemy lines” to consider the utter failure of “Stoneman’s Raid” from the perspective of an enslaved black Southerner.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

I’ve always been a big cello fan, so when Angels of Darkness added one to their dark blue and British folk rock Americana stylings, I got their new album, Demon’s of Lilght 1. It wasn’t only because of the cello though. These guys rock. I’ve also been listening to Cee-Lo and was inspired by his recent story in Georgia Music Magazine to go back and listen to The Goodie Mob again. The real Dirty Dirty. It made me think about the night that myself and a few friends went to see him at Studio 32 out on Hwy 49 and literally 24 people were there. It was just after his Soul Machine record, which I think still stands as his best, and he jumped from the stage and landed in my arms. I relished the sweat the poured off of him, and few people here even knew who he was at the time... which I guess is typical for Macon. Another case in point, Zac Brown playing

Bragg Jam in front of less than 20 people in 2006 ( And you can bet he played “Chicken Fried.” Concerts have a hard time working here because Macon has a hard time paying attention, until someone is on the side of a Wrangler semi. The Blue Indian shows seem to be a welcome exception to this rule. I’ve also been listening to Ray Wylie Hubbard obsessively. He’s a brilliant songwriter from Texas. I grew up just shy of The Duke and Dirty Harry. Charlie Bronson was my man, and yes, I’m actually looking forward to seeing the re-make of The Mechanic because of it. San’s the sweet stache, Jason Statham is as good of an action hero as they get these days. And though I’m a late arrival to the cult of Tosh.0 on Comedy Central, I’ve got to say, this guy has taken a pretty simple concept, Youtube

Videos and a green screen and turned it into one of the funniest half hours on television right now. I’ve been reading the Warmth of other Suns about the exodus of six million black southerners from the terror of Jim Crow to an uncertain existence in the north. It is a great and captivating read. Speaking of great reads I heard Crossroads might be getting Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. And I definitely like that!

TIME-OUTS

EXPLORING MACON with DEAN and ELIOT BYSARAH GERWIG-MOORE

I

’m a working mom. A single working mom. My house is never entirely clean—except when company is coming over (and even then I would advise opening closet doors with great caution). There are lots of times when I feel like I’m behind every deadline and eight ball. But you know the thing about kids? They don’t care about that stuff. They don’t care about the papers I need to correct or about the articles that need writing. Or at least mine don’t. They are selfish in all the age-appropriate kinds of ways. For Dean and Eliot, snack time is a matter of urgency, and so is fun. It’s a great way to be, actually, and is a marvel to be a part of. They keep me young (or at least young at heart), and I love figuring out new ways to entertain (distract?) their active little spirits. So this column is dedicated to “time outs” with kids in Macon—reviews of kid-friendly events and ideas about local outings that won’t involve Barney the Purple Dinosaur. If you have kids, grandkids, or pseudo-kids (you know, the ones you “test drive” to see how much chaos you can tolerate), you may have discovered some of these or others on your own. The longer I live here in Macon with my children, the more I appreciate it as a lovely place to raise them. A few weekends ago, reeling from having shelled out $56 for a Saturday matinee and a few kernels of popcorn, I resolved to keep the boys occupied with free-only events. It was surprisingly easy! We started out with the ribbon cutting for the Macon Dog Park’s improvements and new agility course (funded by the Knight Neighborhood Challenge). There’s no cuter combo

than puppies and kids, and Dean and Eliot had as much fun as Scout (my first baby, an Australian Shepherd)! On a sunny day, the park (the size of a full city block) is a nice green place to stretch legs (four or two) and socialize with other pet lovers. Bring a tennis ball and you’ll make a ton of new friends. Later that afternoon, we ventured to the “Instrument Petting Zoo” at the Museum of Arts & Sciences. Professional musicians spent the afternoon showing children how to play every instrument under the sun: Dean tried the trombone and cello and Eliot

took a shine to the harp and violin. Curators from the Live Animal Department walked around with creatures who didn’t mind being gently petted either, including a python and a lizard. That is an annual event not to be missed—a super fun way to introduce children to orchestral instruments and to the Museum itself. The grounds of the museum –including a pond surrounded by a walking trail—easily occupy the boys for “pond day” on a regular basis. We had a get-your-feet-moving outing, an Arts encounter, and wild animal sightings—all for free. And the best part? The boys were so tired out by the end of the day that they were more than content to settle in that evening for a movie and a snuggle. Because I don’t want this to become a look-how-much-fun-wealready-had kind of column, here are the details of an awesome Valentine’s Day “date” that’s also kid-friendly. The Cox Capitol Theatre will be screening the alt-fairy tale classic, The Princess Bride (doors at 5.30; dinner service at 6:00; movie at 7:00). How better to celebrate “Wuv, TWUUUUUE WUV” than by reciting lines along with Inigo Montoya, Miracle Max, and Princess Buttercup? And for those who’ve not yet made your fortune by leaving no prisoners alive, the Capitol accepts Macon Money (www.maconmoney.com). More details at www.coxcapitoltheatre.com. (reservations recommended). Sarah Gerwig-Moore is a law professor at Mercer Law School, the Co-Chair of the College Hill Corridor Commission, and—most importantly—Dean and Eliot’s Mama.

BARNES & NOBLE OPENS AT LOFTS AT MERCER VILLAGE THIS WEEK

T

he Barnes & Noble at Mercer University opens its new store on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 8:30 a.m. Located in the College Hill Corridor at the Lofts at Mercer Village, the new bookstore seeks to attract a cross-section of the Mercer and Macon communities. In addition to serving the academic needs of students from both Mercer University and the Mercer University Law School, the school's expanded trade book selection will encourage the broader Macon community to visit the store when they want to pick up a new best-seller or classic title. "We are very proud to be a part of this initiative to expand the bookstore's reach," said Jamie Stange, Barnes & Noble regional manager. "We feel very connected to this community and are grateful to Mercer for making us part of this project." Visitors to the new store will also find a much larger selection of merchandise to choose from. "We will carry a broader array of products bearing the Mercer name or logo," said bookstore manager Bill Green. "There is a tremendous pride for our school – not just on campus but all over Macon. Our new merchandise will help more people show their Mercer pride." Barnes & Noble has managed the Mercer University bookstore since 1990. During that time the bookstore has

06 FEBRUARY 10 - 23, 2011

adapted to the changing tastes and needs of Mercer students. Most recently, the bookstore launched a popular textbook rental program that saves students more than 50 percent over purchasing a new, printed book. Additionally, the bookstore has a rapidly expanding list of eTextbooks (which save students upwards of 60 percent). eTextbooks can be read using NOOKstudy, the free application from Barnes & Noble which lets students "study smarter not harder" thanks to an expanding array of features that include online highlighting, color-coded note-taking and the ability to toggle between multiple eTextbooks simultaneously. The Lofts at Mercer Village is a multi-million dollar, mixed-used development located on Montpelier Avenue in the College Hill Corridor's Mercer Village. Construction is nearly completely on the three stories of student loft-style apartments and first-floor retail space, which in addition to the Barnes & Noble at Mercer University, will include Fountain of Juice and Margaritas Mexican restaurants and Designer Tan salon. A grand opening of the new complex is being scheduled for early spring.

he learned more than he thought. In fact, he ranked in the top percentile of his college entrance exam and had the highest GPA of all athletes at his Alma Mater, BethuneCookman. He credits his high school teachers for his success. Graduating with a degree in Education, Jackson tells students that if he can do it, they can do it. “I came from the same environment,” said this former TIndall Heights resident. “I had people in my life, teachers and coaches who took an interest in me.” And now he pays it forward, telling his protégés “the way to get out is through education. It’s something that no one can take from you.” The home being raffled was donated anonymously by a supporter of the Foundation. Jackson expects to use raffle proceeds to provide scholarships for 50 – 100 kids a year. He hopes to sustain the fund with annual donations from the community and local businesses. “Even if someone doesn’t have any time to donate, they can still make a difference by making a financial donation of any amount,” he said. “They know this donation is going to a good cause. In fact,

it may just affect a member of their own family one day.” The scholarship is open to any student in the surrounding area who is involved in community service, submits four recommendations, and is a “C” student. Jackson explained that the scholarship isn’t available for an A or B student because there are plenty of scholarships available for them. “C students are the workers of our community,” he said. “We want to inspire the average student to excel. We want our kids to feel like they have an opportunity, too.” Students who wish to become a part of the After School Program or apply for a scholarship can contact the foundation by emailing Jackson at moyo@moyofoundation.com or visiting the website at www.moyofoundation.com. Donations can also be made at the same website. Tickets can be purchased until midnight on April 15, 2011 at www.100dollardreamhome.com or www.moyofoundation.com. LISTEN UP TO LACY HORTMAN

Lacy Hortman is the bass player for Citizen Insane, which many say is the best local band in Macon right now. Born out of the Macon Noise scene that has bubbled Up from underneath over the past several years, her other project, Mother Cunt, can be described as Post-Punk, though they might even scoff at that designation. Regardless, right in the heart of the Local Music Scene, which is touted as being as well endowed as it's ever been here, you'll find this lovely girl. We caught up with her and asked her a few questions about her taste in all things jingly. Name a song you've listened to in the last 24 hours: Outkast- "Git up, Git out" What was the first album you bought with your own money? Pearl Jam "10" when I was 9 years old. "Alive" was my favorite song. Whose band t-shirt do you wear proudly? The Melvins. (A 3piece “Grunge” band in Hollywood).

Who would we be surprised to learn is in your music collection? Paula Abdul, I wanted to be her when I grew up. That kinda changed, but I still hold a special place in my heart for the album "Forever Girl".

Favorite local restaurant? I would have to say Ingleside Village Pizza, because I love the atmosphere and the people. The Veggie with spinach and extra mushrooms rocks!

SAT. FEB 19 HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAT WEBER

WHAT OUR READERS ARE LISTENING TO

Recommend a band our readers must hear now? As far as newer stuff goes I really like "Magik Markers", they are girls being totally free and it's very liberating and beautiful. What’s your favorite local happy hour spot? The Rookery, I can’t get enough of Roger's Bloody Mary.

MUSIC

Sat, February 19

Thur, February 24

The Georgia Fireflies are an Americana country-folk ensemble hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Their music displays their diverse taste in both new and long gone artists such as the Carter Family, Patsy Montana, Hazel Dickens, Old Crow Medicine Show, Camper Van Beethoven, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Wilco among many others. The website Atlantasbest.com says “This ensemble … composes the best Americana country-folk this city has ever seen. The duo recently released its second album, “Where Do The Birds Go?” which features fiddling banjoes, mandolins, guitars and occasionally percussion instruments.”

For five years now, the Reader's Choice Awards show has made you aware of what to pay attention to in Macon. The year of Doski Wo came and went, a then relatively unknown New Jersey rapper named Floco Torres played there first a couple of years ago, and Sonny Spoon returned to the stage there with an entire drum-line last year. In between were moments like Mark Ballard beating Ben Jones at arm wrestling, Larry Shlesinger presenting with Darth Vadar breathing down his neck, and a cute couple getting engaged on stage. (No word as of yet on how their marriage is going.) This year, we'll be introducing some artists like Amy and Stephen Moretti, who you should already know about but may not, and celebrating some old staples like Citizen Insane. One thing is sure, this is the night in Macon that you do not want to miss. Admission just $5, or $100 for reserved table.

Tokyo Spa @ Rivalry’s Sports Bar

Nominated for best Cover band and Best Band name at this years Reader’s Choice, Tokyo Spa has been playing around Macon like a spreading wildfire these last couple of years and for good reason. They are fun as hell. A great song list, of mostly covers, enthusiam abounds among these guys.

Eric Grant Band @ Wild Wing Café

With great passion and pride, Eric Grant has put smiles and tears on the faces of thousands of fans over the years. As a multi-instrumentalist, he performs and works each and every week: solo, duo, trio, or with the EGB 4-pack or 6-pack configuration. Nick Malloy @ The Shamrock

An up and coming Country act out of Macon, Nick Malloy’s latest albm was nominated for the Best Album of 2010 by 11th Hour Readers. We’ll find out if he won on the 24th, but in the mean time, check out this guy. He got the talent great songwriters like Shane Bridges helped cull here in Macon.

The Heap @ The Hummingbird

This Athens based band is back after a packedout show last month and the many urgings of its patrons at the Bird. A 9 piece HEAP-ing helping of original indie-soul stew- In 2008, The HEAP released their independent debut- Deluxe, coproduced by Matt Yelton (Pixies) and Bill Doss (Apples in Stereo). In 2009, the HEAP was nominated for a Flagpole Music Award in the Funk/Jam category along with Widespread Panic.

Matt Moncrief @ Billy’s Clubhouse

Sometimes you don’t choose to be a musician; the music chooses you. So the story goes with artist Matt Moncrief. If music hadn’t found its way into his bones from the beginning, life might be much easier albeit boring. But it did and it grew with him, seasoning itself as Matt evolved from church choral boy to imaginative teen, fledgling artist, aspiring bass player and finally an open-eyed adult with the natural identity as a bona fide singer-songwriter. Past winner of the 11th Hour Readers’ Choice Awards for “Favorite Singer/Songwriter.”

BELOW ARE A FEW FILM FEST HIGHLIGHTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF SUBMISSIONS THAT SHOULD NOT BE MISSED

SPECIAL SCREENINGS All special screenings take place at the Cox Capitol Theatre and are followed by a Q&A session with the director or writer.

Thursday, February 17th • Freedom Riders, 7:30pm IN 1961, a courageous band of some 400 civil rights ativists—black and white, young and old, male and female, Northern and Southern—risked their lives by deliberately violating Jim Crow laws and traveling together on buses as they journeyed through the Deep South. Greeted by mob violence and bitter racism along the way, many endured savage beatings and even imprisonment. They called themselves the Freedom Riders, and they managed to bring the president and the entire American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil rights inequities that plagued the nation. pbs.org/freedomriders

Friday, February 18th • Black, White and Blues, 8:15pm A Best Feature Film and Best Actor winner at the Hill Country Film Fest, and winner of the “Best Black Filmmaker” and “Best Collaboration” with composer Tree Adams at the Nashville International Film Festival. A Variety review says, “A lightly enjoyable road pic about a circuitous road to redemption, "Black, White and Blues" offers simple, down-home pleasures while spinning an undeniably familiar but emotionally satisfying tale about a young man in need of a mentor and an older fellow in search of forgiveness. Impressing in a lead role he obviously co-wrote (with George Richards) to his own strengths, Morgan Simpson plays Jefferson Bailey, a would-be singer-songwriter whose crippling stage fright stunts his career in Austin, Texas.” - A Q&A with writer, producer, actor Morgan Simpson after the screening

10 EXPERIMENT BEGINS 2/10

P

astor Keith Watson of New City Church had an idea. “It’s really a simple idea, simple yet brilliant. I wish I could say it was MY brilliant idea, but it really wasn’t.” Keith had stumbled upon a video at carrotmob.com that exemplified how crowd funding could better the city your living in. Here was how it worked: a business was selected; the business pledged a portion of sales during a specific prearranged time toward making the world a better place; the organizers rallied the city to shop at that business during the prearranged time. The results? A huge crowd of people gathering at the same place for some intentional shopping to support a great cause. The business benefited, the cause benefited, the people who shopped benefited. Keith says, “What is most beautiful about this idea is that no one does anything out of the ordinary. No one has to spend money they

VIEWS

weren’t already going to spend in the same way somewhere else. No one has to put on construction gloves. No one has to take a risk. Yet everyone involved reaps a reward.” So Keith tossed around this idea to a few friends, Mechel McKinley, Chris Horne, Amy Gerwig Walker, Jessica Walden, and Brad Evans. Everyone agreed this was brilliant and the ideas began to roll – The 10 Experiment was born. The group thought, What would happen if just a handful of people selected a day and time to all shop at the same downtown business? And what if that handful of people invited their friends, and encouraged those friends to invite other friends? And what if that downtown business pledged at least 10% of the proceeds from the experiment to a downtown focused non-profit? What would happen?

@ The answer seemed optimistic, to say the least. The business would be flooded with patrons, the patrons would spend a fun time hanging out with their friends and meeting new friends, and a downtown non-profit would get needed donations. Although, this is an experiment, and it will take community participation to get the wanted results. So – here we go – The 10 Experiment starts February 10th at Killian’s Place. Meet up with 10 of your friends and, hopefully ten of their friends between the hours of 10am and 1pm. Spend a couple of bucks, get coffee and a muffin or enjoy lunch. And at the end of the day, at least 10% of Killian’s sales will go to The Macon Rescue Mission. By doing nothing extraordinary you can help support downtown, help a downtown business thrive, support a great cause downtown, enjoy your friends, and meet new ones, brilliant! The 10 Experiment will continue with a new selected storefront every tenth of the month, for updates visit Facebook.com/The10Experiment. Check out the online video promoting the event.

Visit Killian’s Place in downtown Macon on Feb. 10th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. It's like a big downtown party to support a downtown business to support a downtown non-profit to strengthen a sense of community!

WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH? BY BILL KNOWLES

When is enough, enough? When will the voters in District 26 finally say that State Senator Robert Brown has officially become an embarrassment and kick him out of office? Well, unfortunately the Republican Party has let the voters down by not giving them a choice, being how he has only had one opponent since 1994 and running unopposed four times. We have no one but ourselves to blame for letting this loose cannon continue to fire volleys of shrapnel in the faces of our party for almost two decades. And again I ask, when is enough, enough? Let’s look at the Solon’s glorious record in recent years as he has risen to the leadership position of Minority Leader of the Georgia Senate. In 2009, Brown admitted that he had not filed nor paid any federal or state taxes for the previous two years. His reason: he said he was too sick to file them. The Senate then en went on to pass S.R. 452 which made the tax records of its body more accessible to the public, but not until Brown fought it tooth and nail saying, “It is not a group of political hacks over at the Senate who should have that authority.” He then went on to play the race card on the bills’ author former State Senator and candidate for Governor Eric Johnson saying that there were “blood suckers” in the legislature as he posted a huge photograph of Johnson holding the old Georgia flag which had the Confederate battle emblem on it. Instead of crying foul and trying to do something about it, we all turned our head and basically ignored Senator Brown and his ignorance. Let’s now fast forward to December, 2010 when Senator Brown and Republican

Representative Allen Peake were filming an edition of Randall Savage’s “Up Close” on WMAZ. In a discussion about why so many Georgia Democrats at recently switched parties, Brown made the following statement: “Two or three days prior to an election, I’ve had people say, ‘My wife came home from church, and there was this flier that they were putting out saying I’m a baby killer.’ And then, in less than three weeks after the election, this guy goes over to the Republican Party, the folks who had called him a baby killer. I mean, what does the wife do then, put on some red sheets on the bed and say ‘You know we can get rid of the blue sheets, but keep the white one over there because we might need that one for the midnight meeting.’ ” Once again, Brown played the race card. When an apology was demanded by Peake, Brown responded in a written statement that “When I referred to the bed sheets and meetings, I was thinking of the sexual trysts many Republicans have either been found guilty of or alleged to have participated in while serving in state government.” It’s unbelievable to me, even if that was what he meant, which he DIDN’T, that this would come from a man who is a member of the party who brought us Bill “I did not have sex with that woman” Clinton, Al “’The Inconvenient Truth’ Was That I Am Having an Affair” Gore, John “Sugar Daddy” Edwards and Jesse “I lost count of how many illegitimate children I got” Jackson. The pure and simple fact is this: Brown basically called members of the GOP and anyone who turns their back on the Democrat Party Klansman. I wonder if he is including Ashley Bell who switched parties and became a Republican this year. Bell is a

THE ONGOING SAGA OF STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN

Hall County Commissioner and former National President of the College Democrats. Oh yeah, did I mention that Commissioner Bell is an African-American? Just this week, Brown was at it again under the Gold Dome in Atlanta as the body continues to debate redistricting. With sour grapes filling his mouth, Brown when on to hammer the Republican Party again saying that redistricting “has now been carried to the highest partisan level there’s ever been in the state.” Again I wonder. I wonder what his definition of “ever” is. I wonder if his definition of “ever” means the almost 200 years of Democrat majority in both houses of the Georgia Legislature or the last decade of Republican majority? Brown then went on to

say “someone’s going to get bloody” in the redistricting fight. Now I know he didn’t mean it literally, but couldn’t this buffoon use a better metaphor? I have to revert to my first question here: When is enough, enough? When will the Republican Party be able to find someone to run against this sorry excuse for a public servant? When will the people of the 26th District get tired of electing a man who has received a ZERO rating from the Georgia Christian Alliance? (Brown is the ONLY Georgia State Senator to receive a zero rating, and one of only two in the whole legislature who has received a zero. In contrast, Macon’s other State Senator Cecil Staton received a 100 rating.) So when is enough, enough? Brown himself might actually answer that question. There are rumors that Brown may run for Mayor of Macon against incumbent Robert Reichert, former Mayor C. Jack Ellis and Republican David Cousino. My feelings about this are bittersweet as if he wins, the City of Macon will get this fool, but the Senate will lose him. Further, it is my understanding that if Brown were to win, State Representative David Lucas would run for Brown’s seat and David’s wife, City Councilwoman Elaine Lucas will be running for her husband’s spot. The really bad news for Georgians is that most likely, the Lucas pair would be running unopposed. Great news, huh Middle Georgia? Another scenario is that Brown loses. Then we are stuck in the same spot with the same cast of characters with no end in sight. When will someone pick up the gauntlet these incompetent lunatics continue to throw down and run against them? When will enough, finally be ENOUGH? 11thHourOnline.com

WE’VE FORGOTTEN THE HUMAN NET

BY TINA WHITTLE

ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE, WORKERS ARE ASKED TO DO MORE, QUICKER... two workers propped a ladder against the wing to make sure there wasn’t a dangerous coating of ice up there. Another worker prepared the runway for takeoff, guiding the plane to its correct position, while somebody else I couldn’t see radioed him from the tower, giving the plane the all clear. Each stage in this process was essential to my safe arrival. Each person in the chain held my life in their hands. They labored in the wet snowy morning to make sure the job was done right. And yet most of what I hear from my fellow travelers are complaints, as if each time one of those steel contraptions flings us 35,000 feet into the air and then sets us down safely again isn’t a stupefying miracle. As if these things just happen naturally, like a flower blooming. Each take-off and landing is the work of hands. Same for each trip across town, each glass of clean water from the tap, each time you walk under a chandelier or cross a bridge or pop an aspirin for a headache. Jobs get skimped. Shoddiness and carelessness happen. Procedures fall through the cracks. But I am discovering that most of these failures are not the result of somebody

who doesn’t care about doing a good job. All across the employment spectrum, workers are asked to do more, quicker. Overcrowded classrooms. Impossibly fast food processing lines. Ridiculous nurse-to-patient ratios. It’s an epidemic, and a lot of it comes from topdown analysis with no bottom-up information. It’s profit-driven, not people driven. But we customers have to shoulder our part of the problem we have to value the companies who value their workers. So the next time something goes hinky in your process your order is wrong, your flight is delayed, your mail is misdelivered don’t immediately vent your frustration on the closest warm body. Instead, engage the human being in front of you with compassion and curiosity. Work your empathy muscle. I’ve discovered that the question “If you were in my shoes, what would you do?” gets me more help and attention and problem-solving than an outrageous tirade. And “thank you” goes a long way too. People aren’t things. They aren’t products. They aren’t programs. And the sooner we stop treating them as such, and stop supporting companies that treat them as such, the better off we’ll all be.

AND

Here’s what happens when you forget what day of the week it is, and miss your flight to Chicago during Snowmageddon 2011 you get real acquainted with customer service people, real fast. Luckily for me, I was able to get a new flight rescheduled with no problem. Every person I talked to at every step of the way was efficient, capable and over-the-top considerate all the way from the check-in counter right until the moment I stepped into the freezing cold Illinois air and onto solid ground. Of course, there were problems. There were some unexpected mechanical difficulties. There was snow and ice, lots of it, and more on the way. Which meant that there were lots of frustrated, grumpy travelers. But the people at the airline provided what I needed, when I needed it, with smiles and graciousness. Ditto the people at my imaging center, who sent me home from my mammogram with a long-stemmed rose. Ditto the people at my telephone company, who solved this nontechnical person’s technical problem with skill and patience. I am increasingly aware that such cus-

tomer service is becoming a rarity. And I think we customers have ourselves to blame. Our taste for cheapness has turned us into bottom line consumers. Customer service requires money, lots of it. It costs dollars to train people and keep them trained. It costs dollars to provide benefits and incentives that keep the best people staying on the job. And it costs dollars to keep the technological infrastructure in place that enables customer service reps to do the job they’re trying to do. I don’t care how capable a person is, if the computer system is unworkable, they can’t help me no matter how hard they try. We’ve forgotten the human net that supports almost every action we take. We book flights, buy groceries, and watch movies through a computer interface. But somewhere behind the mechanical bells and whistles are flesh and blood brains, hands and backs. I was thinking of this as I boarded my flight home from Chicago. A light snow had kicked up, and the air was the kind of steely brittle cold that seeps through the warmest coat. As I fastened my seatbelt, I watch the people preparing the plane for departure. The flight attendants made sure all the overstuffed carry-on bags were safely stowed. A team of

FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL DENTAL MONTH!

IF YOU LOVE THEM, MAKE THEM SMILE

F

ebruary is National Dental month for the veterinary world, which means that it is a great time to check your dogs and cats teeth. The easiest way to do this is to take them to your veterinarian and have them assessed. If your budget is screaming no to this you can always flip the lip yourself. Just remember the down side to this, being bitten, scratched, covered in hair and chasing your pet under the bed as they take off in horror at your advances!! If you manage to pry the reluctant patients’ mouth open check all the teeth from the front to the back on both sides top and bottom. Most of the tartar hides right at the back of the mouth in most patients. If you see tartar especially on the back teeth, red gums, or your pet has smelly breath (also known as halitosis) it is time to schedule a prophylactic scale and polish. If you are reading this in disbelief that anyone would actually have their pets teeth cleaned you have not been at Animal Doctors in February. There are dentals being performed throughout the day during this lovely month and some even have to be scheduled in March as we always have more demand than available time slots. We understand how important clean teeth are. In fact my staff are so fanatical about teeth that last year they presented as a united possy to tell me that they had scheduled my daughters dachshund Streusal for a dental cleaning as apparently her owner was negligent and had obviously

not been flipping the lip!! The average cat or small to medium breed dog should have their teeth cleaned annually, while large breed dogs will likely need a cleaning every one to two years. During their annual examination your veterinarian should check your pets’ teeth and suggest when the next scale and polish will be needed. At Animal Doctors we offer half price dentals during February so most of our clients elect to do their dental cleaning during this time. Because our pets are not good at the ‘open wide’ command we do have to put them under general anesthesia. Think about this, please open wide, keep it just like that, don’t be concerned about all the loud whirring, grinding, and scary noises you are hearing or that weird smell of antiseptic and pumice. It’s just not going to happen for our furry patients, so if you are afraid of anesthesia for your pets remember that the bacteria in their mouths will cause heart, brain and kidney diseases that are much worse than the average risk of anesthesia. Do remember to chose a clinic that offers pre anesthetic blood work and that tailors anesthesia to each patient so that it can be as safe as possible. A regular dental cleaning and polish should almost always be a day procedure allowing your pet to go home in the afternoon after they recover from sedation. To maintain that beautiful clean smile you may want to consider some products that will help you with this. Toothbrushes and pet toothpaste are available. Do not be tempted to use human toothpaste as it is toxic to cats and dogs that swallow it rather than spitting it out. Mouthwashes and additives for the drinking water also work well to decrease the bacteria in the mouth. There are dental diets that remove tartar with each bite as well as treats designed to do the same. Hard food is better than soft food for removing or reducing tartar. Finally there is a very clever vaccine available that will reduce tooth loss in small and medium breed dogs. The vaccine works by stopping the bacteria that destroy the bone around the tooth. It works better in small dogs because they have less bone initially and so any bone loss increases their risk of tooth loss, but the vaccine can be used in any canines. An initial series is required consisting of two vaccines three weeks apart followed by an annual booster. The earlier the vaccine is started the more effective it is.

SASQUATCH LINE-UP, ELVIS COSTELLO REBIRTH, FLETCH RETURNS

LCD Soundsystem devotees hoped that this day would never come, despite the fact that This Is Happening and last year’s tour were all but certain to be the band’s final musical endeavors. Over the weekend, however, frontman James Murphy announced that the group would be playing its last show ever at Madison Square Garden on April 2. The White Stripes have also officially called it quits. According to an announcement on their website, "The reason is not due to artistic differences... It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way." Late last night, Sasquatch Music Festival revealed their 2011 lineup, with the Foo Fighters, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse and Wilco confirmed as main acts for the West Coast festival May 29-31. The Flaming Lips will also headline the festival, performing their acclaimed record, The Soft Bulletin, in its entirety. Other major acts scheduled to play the revered Gorge Amphitheatre include The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Robyn, Wolf Parade, Chromeo, Beach House, Yeasayer, Death From Above 1979, Guided By Voices and Archers of Loaf. Starting this year, the road to SXSW (at least for those from the U.S. East coast) goes through Savannah, Ga. For the first time ever, the Savannah Stopover Music Festival will take place on March 9-12, providing a nice little festival featuring more than 30 artists en

route to SXSW the following weekend. “This is the next generation of hot bands who are bubbling up through the music blogs. It’s a great chance for area music fans to be a part of that discovery first hand,” said Kayne Lanahan, the creator of the festival, in a statement. Currently, the fest will feature: Amen Dunes, Astronautalis Aux Arc, Birds Of Avalon, Buried Beds, Class Actress, Country Mice, Cusses, Dare Dukes, Das Racist, Fake Problems, Gringo Starr, J-Live, Jon Lindsay, Lady Lazarus, Little Gold, Little Tybee, Milagres, MillionYoung, Murder By Death, Nive Nielsen & The Deer Children, Prince Rama, Reptar, Sims, Slow Animal, Sunglasses, We Are Trees, Winter Sounds and Xray Eyeballs. Many of the heaviest hitters on the American lo-fi scene have joined forces to form a new band called Zodiacs. Dum Dum Girls leader Dee Dee sings for the band. Woods' Jeremy Earl and Jarvis Taveniere play drums and guitar, respectively. You can stream their song "Faraway Friend" online. Kevin Macdonald, the director of criticallyacclaimed The Last King Of Scotland, will now work on a Bob Marley documentary simply titled Marley, reports TheWrap.com. Over the course of his career, Elvis Costello has dabbled in myriad musical styles—a trend that is returning to the way he tours. Throughout the month of May, Elvis Costello and the Imposters will embark on “The Revolver Tour,” where Costello plans to bring back the “The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” for the first time in 25 years. Warner Bros. is looking to re-imagine the classic Fletch series. For years, people have been looking to reboot the series that started with Gregory McDonald’s mystery novels in

1974. In 1985, Fletch appeared on the big screen and then reappeared in 1989 with Fletch Lives. Kevin Smith was going to adapt the prequel Fletch Won before he dropped it, and then Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs) was going to write and direct with Zach Braff as the star. Of course that didn’t pan out; Lawrence was replaced by Steve Pink, who is no longer associated with the project. EAST BIBB HOMICIDE

THROW AWAY THE KEY

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what at this point in the investigation appears to be a domestic related homicide and suicide attempt. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 5545 Marion Road at 5:42 this evening. First arriving deputies found 71 year old Betty Mullis in her home dead of an apparent gun shot wound to the head. Her husband, 69 year old James Wilbur Mullis was still alive with what investigators believe was a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head. Neighbors dialed 911 just before the dispatch at James Mullis’ request not knowing the exact emergency. Mullis left the neighbors’ residence, walked back to his home and was discovered by arriving officers suffering from a gun shot wound. James Mullis was listed in critical condition at the Medical Center of Central Georgia as of 7:30 PM. The case remains under investigation.

Department officers arrested Shamecca Lavista Lewis, charging her with two (2) counts of Identity Fraud and two (2) counts of Theft by Taking (Fiduciary). Shamecca was a caregiver for three disabled patients who lived in an assistant living environment that she arranged through a company she owns. Lewis's job was to assist patients with bill paying, shopping, eating, clothing and other everyday activities. However, she used her access to these patients’ accounts to pay for a variety of personal activities and services. This is Shamecca Lewis's fourth Bibb County arrest dating back to 1996.
