KNOW MACON: DEC 30 - JAN 13, 2011 PUBLISHER’S NOTES

hat a Christmas! For the first time in many years my entire family was under one roof. My big brother invited us all out to his home in Truckee, California, in the Lake Tahoe area, and all seven of us showed up. The storm of the decade was on deck when we got there, and over 10 feet of snow was expected, but thankfully it didn’t show up. Instead it was perfectly white, and windy on the mountaintop. I made the terrible mistake of trying to follow my 6-year old niece down one of those mountains on skis and it turns out her center of gravity is different than mine. I’m no physicist but that’s just my theory. My 11-year old nephew decided to donate his considerable savings to the Humane Society of Lake Tahoe, which was probably the coolest thing I saw happen during the holidays. As soon as I got home I met with the host of the 2011 Readers Choice Awards and we started stuffing surprises up our sleeves. After last year, it’s really hard to imagine we can top it, but we always do so I imagine that we will again. My first idea

was to have people bench press some of the skinny little indie kids on stage, but I’m not sure that’s going to fly. The voting this year has been stronger than ever with almost 5,000 people getting counted already, and there’s still four weeks left to vote for your local favorites. Still, with this many people voting some of the races are less than two votes apart. Right now, Robin Gatti Cook is leading by 15 votes for best photographer. Abby Owens is leading by one vote for best singer/songwriter, and Macon Man is winning by barely 15 votes for favorite local character, even though no one including his publisher has seen him in months. I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anything here because winners are changing literally every day. Thanks to all the artists for participating and getting their fans on the site to vote. We’ve never had this much traffic. BTW the good folks at Spinen are working on the bugs that have been happening on our site for the last few months. We’re hoping to unveil a brand new look this year, so get ready. Be safe and be good this new year!

he Big House Foundation in partnership with the Douglass Theatre is proud to present the first installment of the 2011 Stay ‘n Play Concert Series. And they are pleased to bring legendary blues artist, Rory Block to Macon on Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Douglass Theatre. Doors open at 7:00pm, with the show starting at 8:00pm. Heralded as “a living landmark” (Berkeley Express), “a national treasure” (Guitar Extra), and “one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists” (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world. The New York Times declared: “Her playing is perfect, her signing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends.” Born in Princeton, NJ, Aurora “Rory” Block grew up in Manhattan a family with

Bohemian leanings. The rich and diverse Village scene was a constant influence on her cultural sensibilities. She was playing guitar by age ten, and by her early teens she was sitting in on the Sunday jam sessions in Washington Square Park. Growing up she’s been able to swap stories and guitar licks with seminal bluesman Son House, Robert Johnson’s mentor (“He kept asking, ‘Where did she learn to play like this?’”). She traveled to Washington, DC, to visit with Mississippi John Hurt and absorb first-hand his technique and his creativity. The world finally started taking notice in the early 1990s, and Block scored numerous awards throughout the decade. Today, after more than twenty highly acclaimed releases and five Blues Music Awards, Block is at the absolute height of her creative powers, bringing a world full of life lessons to bear on what she calls “a total celebration of my beloved instrument and best friend, the guitar.” Stay & Play Concert Series The Historic Douglass Theatre 355 Martin Luther King JR Blvd. Show at 8pm, $15 general admission

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

I’m going to say it one more time, because I just finished it and it’s one of the best books I’ve read all year long. Go out and buy Empire of the Summer Moon. You will never understand the settlement of the American West like this. I loved it so much I went out and bought a stretched canvas print of Commanche Principal Chief, Quanah Parker standing on the steps of his “Star House.” And I’m not sentimental like that. I can’t believe I got an ipad for christmas. I might actually stop talking about my Kindle now that I can read in color again. It is a wonderful complex piece of machinery which I’ve already grown to adore. I also got a new wallet which seems

kind of boring until you visit the Saddleback Leather website and see who made this useful piece of art. This guy is the coolest of the cool. He spent a lot of time searching all over the world for the best leather, and then, after finding an old cobbler in Mexico, started constructing old-fashioned suitcases, bags, and wallets out of it. A big kiss to the wife for remembering how much I covet good, thick leather. And his merchandise comes with a guaranteed ten-year warantee. We spent the holidays in Truckee, California, with my entire family, out at my brothers house. We had a great time being together, and snow skiing together and winning money in South Lake Tahoe together, but I think the coolest thing I saw during this Xmas was my 10-year old nephew ask if he could donate all of his

christmas money and savings to the Humane Society of Lake Tahoe. Big brother sits on the board there, and I realize this could have been the big butter up, but nonetheless, some homeless Sunny State animals got helped by money that in most cases would have gone to more toys. The Atlanta Falcons are back. I lived in California during their last run to the Super Bowl. I used to go to 49er bars dressed in a Chris Chandler jersey and camoflauge pants and I’d do the dirty bird all over their face. I haven’t been that obnoxious yet, but I anticipate getting there. Speaking of the “Dirty Bird,” the artist who wrote that song, our very own Sonny Spoon, has yet another surprise up his sleeve for the Readers Choice Awards this year. Date coming soon!

Tom Dowd & the Language of Music Tuesday, January 11th at the Cox Capitol Theatre While it has been proven that the study of music can help individuals excel in the area of mathmatics, sciences, and foreign languages, Tom Dowd took his love of music and excelled in the areas of production and engineering. If you picked some of the all-time great albums in American rock, soul, and jazz, chances are one name might be found on the back of almost every one: Tom Dowd--the secret behind five decades of brilliant music, an unsung hero, producer and recording pioneer. From the perfection of live mixing to the introduction of eighttrack recording, the mythology of exactly how much impact Dowd has had is still up for grabs. His diverse and genuine love of work is remembered in part through the interviews and music of Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers Band, John Coltrane, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Ornette Coleman, and Thelonious Monk to name but a few. BOOKS {noteworthy releases from around the south} WILLIAMS’ “THE FLOWER SEEKER” PUBLISHED BY MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESS Named Book of the Year by Books & Culture Magazine Prominent national literary magazine Books & Culture has named The Flower Seeker: An Epic Poem of William Bartram as its book of the year. The epic poem, by Philip Lee Williams and published by Mercer University Press, is written from the perspective of 18th Century naturalist William Bartram and based on his book, The Travels. The Flower Seeker is one of two books published by Mercer Press as part of its Bartram Project. The reviewers praised the book for “pay(ing) homage to the epic tradition in a distinctively American way. Curiosity and delight, beauty and sadness, loss and yearning, and all the ‘fragrant disorder of this world’ are mingled here in a narrative that suggests the gratuitous abundance of Creation itself.” Williams spent years researching the form and two years writing the book. The resulting work was enhanced through the collaboration of Williams, Mercer Press editors and design

The Flower Seeker features painstaking detail in its design, winding 24 cantos through numerous visual twists, including innovative typography, interspersed with drawings by Bartram and other artists. “This award is a huge honor for Philip Lee Williams and for Mercer Press,” said Dr. Marc Jolley, director of Mercer University Press. “His writing is among the very best in the country and recognition of his work such as this does not surprise me, but it is truly wonderful. From the first moment I began reading it in manuscript form I knew it was special. This book is one of the most creative and beautifully written books I have ever read and it was a joy to be a part of its creation.”

‘DEAD MAN WALKING’ AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT MERCER ON KING DAY

S

ister Helen Préjean, author of Dead Man Walking, will deliver Mercer University’s inaugural Freedom Lecture at 7 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 17, in Willingham Auditorium on the University’s Macon campus. The event is free and open to the public, and a book signing will be held immediately following the lecture in Newton Chapel. In addition to Préjean’s lecture, she will give a writing workshop and there will be two free film screenings. One of the foremost advocates for the abolition of the death penalty, Préjean is a Roman Catholic nun, social activist, community organizer, best-selling author and a three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee. While serving the poor of New Orleans, she began correspondence with a man on death row, eventually became his spiritual adviser and accompanied him to his execution. From her experiences, Préjean wrote Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. A Notable Book and Pulitzer Prize nominee, the book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 31 weeks. It was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film by Tim Robbins, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The book and film have helped to propel Préjean to the forefront of the debate over the death penalty and she has been interviewed by hundreds of broadcast and print media outlets around the world. Executions, was published in 2004. In it, she tells the story of two men, Dobie Gillis Williams and Joseph O’Dell, whom she accompanied to their executions. She believes both of them were innocent. Fifteen years after beginning her crusade, the Roman Catholic sister has witnessed five executions in Louisiana and today educates the public about the death penalty by lecturing, organizing and writing. As the founder of “Survive,” a victim’s advocacy group in New Orleans, she continues to counsel not only inmates on death row, but the families of murder victims, as well. The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Freedom Lecture at Mercer seeks to bring leading thinkers to the University whose vision reflects the values of faith, education, freedom, community and morality expressed in the institution’s mission and in the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.

LISTEN UP TO JUSTIN CUTWAY Justin Cutway, sometimes known as Trendlenberg has been nominated as Macon's best Singer Songwriter for the last two years. His audience is smaller, and by that we mean skinny, and his been one of our favorites for years. There is nobody more fun to sit back and listen to. Here is what he had to say about music. What song have you listened to in the last 24 Hours? “Tiny Tears” by The Tindersticks. It's not very often you get to hear a bass vocalist tear up a pop song.

What band should our readers immediately go out and buy? The Duchess and Duke Band T-shirt you wear proudly? Nationally, the Silver Jews. Locally, Floco Torres. What's your favorite Happy Hour spot? The Hummingbird for $1 beers and free darts. What got you into playing music? My dad bought me a guitar for Christmas when I was 12. I'd already been singing and performing for a couple years in a children's group. That guitar helped me realize I could play songs, sing songs, and write songs all by my self.

Leslie Pittman is listening to Psyk Nyne; Megan Evans is digging new album by She & Him; Neal Fountain found a rare record by Red Hot Chili Peppers & George Jones, and Evan Yarbrough is listening to Tame Imapala.

WHAT’S NEW Clark Bush and the rest of Macon Noise have been busy recording new albums and have taken a short break from their online fanzine. In the meantime, you can download for free six new albums from their bandcamp website, including Trufflelina’s “The Physics of Cro-Magnon Chromatics.” Visit MaconNoise Presents.bandcamp.com for downloads.

N

ominated for Best Overall Band and Best New Band in this year’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Awards, Jubee and the Morning After just “Kickstarted” a new album on a brilliant new website designed to allow fans to support the efforts of their favorite band, journalist, inventor, or filmmaker. If you donate $1000 bucks, manager Will Thompson will get your name tattooed on his butt, seriously. A few weeks ago Truffelina managed to raise enough to record “The Physics of Cro-Magnon: Chromatics” in just a few days. Jubee and Crew need $300 more bucks to reach their goal. Go to Kickstarter.com today and put your money where your mouth is for the local music scene. There are two different new years eve Parties this year that are spilling over with local music. Only Terrell Sandefur would call his own party EPIC, but nonetheless, The Royal Fireworks, Jubee and the Morning After and Back City Woods are

rocking in the New Year at his Sochi Gallery. A little more indie is the party at the Underground, which is in the basement of the Riverview Ballroom. (It’s pretty cool down there) It’s the release of the aforementioned CD. Truffelina Truffelina, Citizen Insane, Cult of Rigonnia, Xavii and Jacksonville Bands 2416 and Memphibians will be there. We’ve been digging on the Roly Bots, and Red Swiller, Jared Wright’s new website www.miloes.com which explains his head in great detail. Make sure to check it out. 2 Finger Jester sets out on their Tequilia and Choas tour 2011 on Feb 5. We can only assume that this is a middle Georgia tour somehow based around Sammy Hagar. You’ve got to love the charisma of Mat Weber. Clark Bush let the Facebook world know that he won’t be booking shows at the Golden Bough in January and possibly

thereafter due to family sickness, In his letter he urges someone to pick up where he left off. We hope someone will. It’s time to see how strong this music community really is. Speaking of community, the 11th Hour Reader’s Choice Awards are set for February 24th at the Cox Capitol Theatre. DJ Dirt Dog from 97.9 is holding down the host front this year, and we have performances by Larry Schlesinger, Jubee and the Morning After, Young R, Floco Torres, Citizen Insane, Sonny Spoon and a whole bunch of surprises. Make plans to be there.

Col. Bruce @ The Hummingbird

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Col. Bruce Hampton @ The Bird

Col. Bruce Hampton, Ret. has been making music since he formed his first band in 1963. The Colonel has been in constant motion ever since making music, writing poetry, and guessing birthdays along the way, leaving a trail of memorable live performances with his many bands, including The Late Bronze Age and Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit. Along the way he appeared in the movie "Sling Blade" as the poet and band manager Morris and starred in Mike Gordon's cult classic "Outside Out" as a mystical guitar 'out'structor. Still rolling down the road, Col. Bruce continues his quest for the tonal center at each exit #6.

Radio Cult @ Wild Wing Café

Since 2005, Radio Cult has performed over 400 shows including casinos, weddings, fraternity parties, corporate events and festivals as well as in bars, concert halls and other music venues from their hometown of Atlanta, GA all the way to Los Angeles, CA and London, UK. The members of Radio Cult LOVE to play in a band and it shows. When the band has fun, the crowd has fun and with Radio Cult the crowd really has a blast!

Lefty Williams Band @ Wild Wing

FRIDAY 1/7

Snakes Swallow Tails @ The Rookery Combining a maverick approach to

songwriting and the jarring clash of severance and serenity, Chris Lee and John Thorstad, both the epitome of bare bones and brimstone, are the heart of Snakes Swallow Tails. The indie folkduo released their debut album, "Our Bodies Are Bowed Down To The Dust", on September 2nd, 2010, and are currently on tour in the southeast, all the way from Milwaukee, WI.

Tokyo Spa @ Billy’s Clubhouse

I think it's safe to say that everyone loves good music... especially live music. So, finding a good live band is something we can all appreciate. The energy, the atmosphere... the crowd singing mostly off-key. They can all relate that to a damn good time!

Big House Museum presents: Rory Block @ The Douglass Theatre

Heralded as “a living landmark” (Berkeley Express), “a national treasure” (Guitar Extra), and “one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists” (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared: “Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends.”

Chase 56 @ The Hummingbird

Hidden among the unending tangles of kudzu, tucked back among the towering Georgia pines and buzzing power lines, sits a haggard little shack that seems to lean comfortably to one side. From the leaning shack comes the smell of open fire, of sweat, stale beer and last night’s whiskey. Then come the sounds. A snare drum smacks like a fastball to a well-oiled mitt, a crisp

The Bottle Rockets @ The Bird acoustic guitar begs for company in misery and a pedal steel melts the kudzu into retreat. There’s a band of musicians tucked away in that shack, and they’re hard at work. This is the musical home of Georgia rock band Chase Fifty Six. This is where twanged insta-classics like “Mary Jane” and “Let it Go” were first penned and performed, where rock rumpuses like “Wasting Time” and “Goodbye Princess” got their first sweaty kick in the ass. Enter that shack and you’ll hear the music of Chase 56 lout and clear.

SATURDAY 1/8

The Bottle Rockets @ The Bird

In a country where interstates don’t take you to new places, but to the same places, where everywhere you go you’ve already been or you’ve just left, The Bottle Rockets’ new album absolutely nails a sound and a vibe with a palpable sense of place. Lean Forward is suffused with the determination and resilience of their distinctly midwestern roots; theirs is a celebration of pragmatism and tempered optimism, not the delusions and exhortations of glassy eyed zealots—they aren’t going to fall for that. Oh, it’s a flat out, smoking rock record, too.

Eddie Stone @ Mellow Mushroom

Eddie Stone spent many years playing keyboard and guitar for the Southern Rock band Doc Holliday, but today, the Warner Robins, Georgia native is embarking on a solo career with a great new CD, "Right Tonight" (See our CD Reviews page) and performing with an excellent band as Eddie Stone and the Soul Shakers.

Lefty Williams Band @ Wild Wing

A skilled guitarist with over two decades of experience, Lefty Williams holds songcraft and musicianship at a premium. By emphasizing each equally on his ironically titled sophomore album Snake Oil, he engages and enlightens the listener. In turn, we fall for Williams’ powerful guitar licks and candid songs, often long before the origin of his nickname—he was born without a right hand—is clear. 11thHourOnline.com

OFF THE GRID SOLUTIONS TO

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

BY JENNY MURR

It’s that time again. Time to reevaluate, to renew those unfulfilled promises of last year‌and if truth be told, those declarations have been on your resolution lists for many years. Don’t feel bad, you’re not the only one caught in this kaleidoscope of bad habits and failed promises. It’s sad really, each of us needing to change— wanting to change—desperately trying to become a more successful version of ourselves only to realize that, despite our good intentions and great start, we are woefully back where we started at the dawn of yet another New Year. What is our problem?

A

sk Einstein and he would say we are insane—doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Caught in a chasm between Western and Eastern medicine, many of us opt to stick with what we know‌a handful of pills and a perpetually empty wallet. In an effort to help stop the insanity, we offer some alternative healthcare solutions for your New Year’s Resolutions. While we aren’t endorsing any treatment, these options could start you on a journey that might just deliver you to your destination‌you be the judge.

QIGONG “Relaxation yields productivity says Selena Gilbert, Certified Level 2 Facilitator of the Supreme Science Qigong Center, and her students will tell you that the benefits of an early morning session far outweigh the desire to stay in bed. Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice similar to Yoga or Tai Chi (recognized by the Mayo Clinic); however, the movements are smaller and easier to learn. It is a 5000 yearold energy art for strengthening the flow of life force and improving health. Gilbert encourages students to use bellybreathing, movement and dietary changes to achieve a balance of the qi. “Everything has energy. The earth has energy and so has our bodies, Gilbert explained. Through group movement and breathing sessions, each person creates a field of energy around them of up to 3 feet. When a group of participants work together,

there are exponential benefits. Nutrition is an important aspect of Qigong. According to the Qi Revolution website, www.qirevolution.com/food-healing.aspx, “most diseases are reversible with food. However, just eating healthy isn’t enough. The real Secret lies in using ‘specific foods for specific diseases.’ Gilbert reports amazing results with a student who was suffering from Asthma. “I gave her a basket of kiwi fruit and asked her to eat it daily. Within a week, she reported a great improvement in her condition. At Breathe Studios, Gilbert offers exercise sessions and teaching sessions on the food protocols to students of all ages. HYPNOSIS

YOGA

ACUPUNCTURE

Many of us think of hypnosis as a form of entertainment. A hypnotist calls a few of your friends up on stage and after getting “very sleepyâ€?, they make asses of themselves. But there are proven cases in which hypnotism has helped when traditional methods have failed. According to local Master Hypnotist Dale “Docâ€? Dougherty, “hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness, often associated with relaxation, where you are able, if you wish, to open yourself to suggestions and where you can make use of your imagination to help you effect positive change in your life.â€? Certified in general hypnosis, HypnoBirthing, past life/age regression, stage hypnosis, and sports hypnosis, Doc has helped many people with myriad issues ranging from issues of health to improving a golf swing. He has helped expectant mothers deliver with little or no pain; patients overcome eating disorders, as well as helping people with the usual smoking cessation, weight loss issues. Athletes have been helped to achieve their peak performance through positive self talk and students have been able to improve their study habits as well. Doc offers individual sessions as well as group sessions and will even entertain your guests at your next party. Currently, he is making plans to present group sessions at either a local theater or meeting space in Macon. “Whether it is to remove fears, offer forgiveness, or reduce anxiety, people can either attend a session on every topic, or just attend a future session that is of interest to them. Either way, the first introductory session is needed as a way to educate everyone on the topic, and to condition everyone’s mind for future sessions‌with the benefit of relaxation and confidence,â€? Doc said.

Yoga is a medicine, which originated in India, which can benefit the healthy and the sick. Although many Western physicians are not very knowledgeable in this area, a Macon physician has experienced positive outcomes from the discipline and now offers yoga to Middle Georgians. “All of our lives are frantic at times. Yoga teaches us to find that calm place inside,â€? said Dr. Dannette Kallay, owner of YogaMoga. She states that many conditions can be improved with yoga: anxiety and panic attacks, arthritis, asthma, back pain, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, high blood pressure, insomnia, infertility, irritable bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, obesity‌‌.the list goes on! According to Kallay, there are many different types and styles of yoga. For example, restorative yoga is more suitable for the person that enjoys a slow pace. Holding relaxing postures for several minutes at a time allows deep relaxation and healing to occur. A power yoga practice offers a faster pace, more cardiovascular effects and more toning and strengthening. Some people even enjoy yoga in a heated room which allows the body to release toxins through the breath and the skin via sweating. Kids also benefit from yoga. Through yoga games and stories, even toddlers can begin to learn yogic breathing, stretching and exercise. In addition to the benefits of exercising, yoga can teach kids how to breathe and relax in stressful situations. “My goal as a kid’s yoga instructor is to teach them yoga they can take with them for the rest of their lives. My students often give me examples of how yoga helped them on an exam or in a tense situation with a friend. The kids are especially good at taking their yoga off the mat and into the world.â€?

Acupuncture is a vital part of traditional Oriental medicine used in Eastern healthcare for over 3000 years. While Western medicines are based on a biochemical model, Oriental medicine is based on an energetic model. Energy flows along pathways in the body, each associated with a particular physiological system or internal organ. A deficiency or imbalance of energy causes disease and discomfort. A trained acupuncturist inserts sterilized needles (as fine as a strand of hair) at locations specific to the patients’ complaints. Most patients experience relaxation, some actually fall asleep during treatment. A patient at the Acupuncture & Herb Center, in Warner Robins, reported that Eastern medicine has given him relief when Western medicine could not. For seven years, this patient has been receiving treatment for a debilitating injury; he is now able to walk on his own and his pain has diminished significantly. According to Dr. Zhiming Meng, O.M.D. Licensed Acupuncturist, acupuncture is suitable for respiratory disorders, neurological and muscular disorders, digestive disorders, urinary and menstrual problems, tension, anxiety, stress, depression, addictive behaviors (smoking, alcohol, overeating) and conditions unsatisfactorily relieved by conventional medicine. Dr. Meng, originally a medical doctor in China, has practiced acupuncture and herbology in the states since 2000. Depending on the condition, many patients experience complete relief after three visits ($50 each). Smoking cessation is achieved after seven consecutive treatments at an approximate cost of $330. With just a look at a patient’s tongue and taking his pulse, Dr. Meng can diagnose a condition, prescribe a treatment of herbs, and/or apply acupuncture.

TAX ALLOCATIONS LARRY SCHLESINGER Macon City Council Ward 3, Post 1

In 2007 when the current Mayor and City Councilmen and –women were running for office, we were all confronted by the city’s financial difficulties and shrinking monetary surplus, and I think we all sensed that some tough financial decisions did, in fact, lie ahead. What I do not believe that any of us anticipated at the time, however, was that the economy across this entire nation was going to tank as it did, resulting in the recession/depression that continues to adversely affect us all, and that severely compounded our city’s financial difficulties that we already faced. As a result of the economic downturn, development and redevelopment in Macon ground virtually to a crawl. I am aware of several planned restorative, renovative and new construction projects that just had to be shelved simply because the financing necessary to make them happen was suddenly no longer available.

Mayor Reichert’s proposed establishment of three tax allocation districts offers our community something of an oasis of relief and the opportunity to further Macon’s development and redevelopment as our slow recovery from economic difficulty and uncertainty continues to afflict and affect us all. Local governments such as our own are granted authority by the state to sell bonds to finance infrastructure and other redevelopment costs within a specifically defined area (a Tax Allocation District or TAD). This area must suffer from blight or other economically or socially distressed conditions; it must also have the potential for redevelopment, and certainly Macon has its share. Through the incremental increase in a redevelopment area’s ad valorem revenues resulting from new development and natural increases in the tax base, tax increment financing as it is termed allows the costs of constructing public facilities and infrastructure to be charged directly to the businesses that use them rather than to the public at large. These TADs, then, have proven to be effective alternatives to financing economic development through the

@ use of general funds, LOST or SPLOST revenues or by raising any of our taxes. The proposed Second Street Tax Allocation District of just over 78 acres comprising 258 land parcels is an essential component of Mayor Reichert’s rather comprehensive Second Street Corridor Redevelopment Plan that would, in part, connect Little Richard Penniman Boulevard with Second Street downtown. Proceeds from the TAD bonds in this district would be devoted to the funding of its specific infrastructure needs that we all know from the recent storm water sewer repairs on First Street need to be addressed throughout downtown. The overall vision in this district is to create jobs through office, research and development, and retail development, provide new shopping, recreation and entertainment opportunities, and create a more vibrant residential neighborhood environment. The Renaissance on the River Tax Allocation District proposed comprises over 11 acres of parcels that are located near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Spring Streets that parallel the Ocmulgee River and Interstate 16. Tax allocation financing in this district would provide the approximately $21 million that are necessary to create the infrastructure of roads, water, wastewater, storm water and parking necessary to support the retail, restaurant, hotel, residential and office spaces that would be financed solely by the private sector.

To comment on the Viewpoints printed here, or have a rant or rave about the city or other issues, visit our website www.11thHourOnline.com

The Bibb Mill Center Tax Allocation District would comprise 9 acres of parcels located near the intersection of Coliseum Drive and Interstate 16. Again in this case, the City’s investment of $5 million in infrastructure costs would be financed through the TAD itself, while the two hotels, the roomy medical building, the 349 housing units, its parks, restaurants and structured parking facility planned for the properties would be erected by private sector entities and investment. There is absolutely no doubt that these are tough times, and the circumstances in which we have recently found ourselves have taught me much about the effects that the Great Depression had on my parents and grandparents who lived through it all. Over the course of the past few years, our great challenge as elected officials has been to keep this city financially afloat in spite of the drastic reduction in municipal revenue that this recession/depression has effected. But at the same time, let us not forget that restorative, renovative, and new construction projects remain the essential keys to the future of our city, and the creation of these Tax Allocation Districts now will enable us to get these initial, 'shovel ready' projects off the shelf and into the life blood and vibrancy of our community. Larrry Schlesinger, Macon City Council can be reached at larry.schlesinger@macon.ga.us.

It’s refreshing to enjoy innovative technology from a bank that can help you make sense of it all.

MACON MONEY? Macon Money is a community-wide social game designed for the residents of Macon. Using a new local currency with a fun twist, the game builds person to person connections throughout the community while supporting local businesses. Macon Money was created by Area/Code as part of the John L. and James S. Knight Foundation's Games for Engagement Initiative.

HOW CHRISTMAS BECAME CHRISTMAS

HOW TO PLAY Macon Money is a brand new kind of game, but the basic idea is simple; get half of a bond, find a match, and then turn in the completed bond for Macon Money! Spend Macon Money at participating businesses! There are three ways to get half of a bond; sign up and we'll mail you one (www.MaconMoney.org), come to a Macon Money event where we'll be handing them out, or swing by HQ (533 Cherry St.) and pick one up. Once you've gotten a bond, you'll see that it has three symbols printed on it. It's your job to find another bond half with the same symbols in the same order, so you can join your two halves into a complete bond. For example, a KAZOO, NOTE, PEACH bond can only match up with another KAZOO, NOTE, PEACH bond. If you hold the bonds together you should be able to tell right away whether you've found a match. How do you find your match? Here are some suggestions: • Check out the Macon Money forums where players can discuss strategies and make matches. • Get your friends involved! The more people you know with a bond, the better chance you have of making a match with one of them. • Check out the Macon Money Facebook page to see what people have posted there. • Put up a sign at work letting everyone know what symbol set you have. Who knows; maybe a match will come to you! • Get the word out: use your social networks like Facebook or Twitter to let everyone know what set you're looking for. • Swing by the [game's HQ] and check out the bulletin board to see if any potential matches have posted a note for you. • There are new bonds going out all the time, so keep checking back on the forums, at the HQ bulletin board, and other places to see if new matches have shown up.

Dude, I got a new bike, a PK Ripper, 1st fixed free syle in Macon! - Matthew Buffalo Morgan

My Canon Rebel camera, my Shark mop, my jewelry, my painting from Costa Rica, my Vera Bradley bag, my coffee maker and on and on. - Anne Haizlip Jackson

$8100 HAS BEEN AWARDED $56,900 STILL AVAILABLE!

Match up your bonds to win some Macon Money today! Visit their website at www.MaconMoney.org to get started.

• Talk about the game. You never know who might be holding onto your match!

HOW TO REDEEM YOUR BONDS FOR MACON MONEY When you've found your bond match, bring both halves down to HQ to redeem them for Macon Money. If you've arranged to make a match with a stranger, be sure to meet the person in a safe, public setting, perhaps right at HQ. If possible, both players should come down to HQ together. If that's not possible, one player can bring in both halves. HQ is located at 533 Cherry Street and hours are Monday - Friday 12pm to 5:30pm. You can also redeem matching bonds at any of our official events where we'll set up a temporary HQ. If you make a match at an event you can redeem the bond right there on the spot. Once you've got your Macon Money you can spend it at any of the participating local businesses, just like cash. Participating businesses include Amanda Jane Salon, Cherry Street Cycles, Ingleside Village Pizza, Francar’s, Jittery Joes, The Rookery, Roly Poly and many more.

“Put ‘Christ’ back in Christmas” reads one bumper sticker. “Whose birthday is it, anyway?” reads another bumper sticker. It is as if some people believe that there is a sacred Christmas as opposed to the secular Christmas. Christmas has ALWAYS been a mixture of the sacred and secular. The earliest Christians didn’t observe birthdays at all, believing it to be a pagan practice. The first followers of Jesus waited for his return, but they ignored the day of his birth. There is no record of when the birth occurred, and it was in the fourth century when the first traces of Christmas as a church festival can be seen. There is only a 1 in 365 chance that Jesus was born on December 25. December 25 was chosen as the designated day of Jesus’ birth because it was already a secular In Southern Europe, holiday. December 17 was observed as a day called Saturnalia. It was a day of revelry and feasting. December 25 was the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. Buildings were decorated with evergreens and gifts were exchanged in honor of Mithra, the sun God. Europe, In Northern Scandinavian and Germanic peoples observed Yuletide with bonfires and gargantuan feasts to ward off ghosts and demons who were thought to be lurking in the darkness. A mythical creature named Julebuk appeared in a devil’s mask and horns, distributing gifts to children. All of these festivals were also connected to the winter solstice. As the Christian faith community grew, it simply adopted already existing holidays in the indigenous

culture to “piggyback” on for their major celebrations, Christmas and Easter. The fact that the church superimposed Christmas over already-existing pagan holidays does not detract from the holiness of the season. The church gave more meaning and import to the secular holiday celebrations by simply adopting what was already there. This is God sneaking into the world, just as God snuck into the world with the birth of Jesus. Notice that many of the pagan practices crept into our religious Christmas celebrations – trees, lights, Santa, giving of gifts. And faith practices have crept into the secular celebration of Christmas. Sometimes we Christians are too possessive of Christmas. We lament that the “true meaning” of Christmas is vanishing. Not at all! Christmas has always been a mixture of the sacred and secular. There is no need to be defensive about Christmas. We Christians actually were the ones who hijacked the holiday… not the other way around! Relax. Live simply. Resist the temptation to make it a retail Christmas. Love. Worship. Feast. Give gifts. Read the story of the birth of Jesus. Be caught up in the wonder and mystery of it all. Put ornaments on a tree. String lights around. Be well aware that some of your actions come from secular, and even pagan, roots. That is ok! God is at work in a secular world! Let go of your anger. Light a candle. Know that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. Tim Bagwell is the pastor of Centenary Church on College Street in Macon. TOP TEN REASONS I LOVE BEING LIBERAL

2010 HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING YEAR TO BE A LIBERAL. SO IN THE SPIRIT OF ALL THE COUNTDOWNS AND LIST-MAKING THAT THE END OF THE YEAR BRINGS, HERE ARE MY TOP TEN REASONS THAT IT’S GOOD TO BE A LIBERAL. BY TINA WHITTLE

have jumped for joy and pounded my fists, screamed at the television and laughed out loud. So in the spirit of all the countdowns and list-making, here are my top ten reasons that it’s good to be a liberal.

I

The Statesboro Farmer’s Market Now this is actually good for all kinds of people in our fair city, liberal or otherwise, but it especially warms the cockles of my liberal heart because it celebrates diversity, innovation, and environmental sustainability. Our market features food grown, harvested, and prepared by my neighbors. Being a locavore is good for the planet, which makes it good for human beings. You can find organic veggies, free-range meat and eggs, handcrafted desserts and breads. You can meet your farmers and your ranchers and your bakers and your beekeepers, and they can meet you. In a year of salmonella outbreaks and too many food recalls to count, this act of simple exchange is radical, revolutionary and utterly old-fashioned all at the same time.

Silk Vanilla Soy Creamer Something achingly good for my conscience vegan, healthy, and produced using alternative energy sources that is also ridiculously delicious. If it were caffeinated, I wouldn’t even bother with the coffee. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is Finally History One of the more ridiculous pieces of nonsense ever to be drafted has finally bitten the dust. As a patriot, I appreciate the women and men who serve our country and the democratic ideals that it was built upon, and I am proud that we have finally decided that courage really does come from the content of one’s character and not from the orientation of one‘s sexuality. Politically Correct Holidays I am not required to be grumpy every time someone says “Happy Holidays!” instead of “Merry Christmas!” because I know that many faiths celebrate with holy days this time of year, including several religions that pre-date Christianity.

Marriage Equality We are moving closer to having marriage equality in this country, and I am getting ready to celebrate when we do. It’s high time we stopped pretending that the government has any business sticking its fingers into the matrimonial pie. Let bureaucratic institutions regulate civil unions let religious institutions have marriage. It’s My Party, I’ll Invite Who I Want To Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter all conservatives. If I ever have a big party and invite a lot of famous people, I don’t have to invite these wingnuts. I can invite Bruce Springsteen and Jon Stewart. Much more interesting. Splurging on an Eco-Latte I don’t have to feel guilty about spending five dollars on a latte because not only is the coffee fair trade, I brought my own mug and saved the trees from becoming a disposable cup.

AMERICA NEEDS HEROES AGAIN

BY BILL KNOWLES

COX CAPITOL

Helpful Hands I can always find friends to rally around my cause du jour, no matter how obscure and ridiculous it might sound to them. Even if I wanted to protest making jewelry from live cockroaches (which is an actual real cause that PETA has adopted) I know that my good liberal friends would sign my petition and not say a contrary word. Because they know that should they ever decide to take on something that seemed way out in left field, I’d be right there, pen in hand, to add my support.

AND

Not Having to Watch Fox News, Ever We don’t have cable TV, so the only time I am afflicted with this excuse for a news station is in doctor’s waiting rooms and at my parent‘s house.

I know that every time a television is switched to this station, Walter Cronkite goes spinning in his grave, spitting and sputtering at the opinionated, slanted, sensationalistic rants these faux reporters attempt to pass off as journalism.

MOVIES

merica needs heroes again. I could not believe it a couple of weeks ago when the city of Berkeley, home of the University of California at Berkeley, often referred to as Cal Berkeley, voted on a resolution to honor Army PFC Bradley Manning as a hero. For those of you who don’t know him, Private Manning is the shameless piece of trash who is suspected of leaking military secrets to Wikileaks. In an interview, Bob Meola, the author of the Berkeley resolution, called Manning an individual who is a “patriot and should get a medal.” Thankfully, the City Council has tabled the resolution indefinitely. My question is why in the world would anyone consider this traitor a hero? Some people have clearly forgotten what a hero really is. I’d like to tell you about a man, who was a patriot, received almost every medal our country could give him, but is quickly becoming a footnote in American History. His name is Audie Murphy. Audie was born in 1925 in Kingston, Texas, a wide spot in the road about an hour outside of Dallas. To say he was born in poverty would be an understatement; Audie had eleven brothers and sisters, three of which didn’t make it out of childhood. His father was a sharecropper, seemingly in title only, who just up and left his large family when Audie was fifteen years old. A short time earlier Audie had to drop out of school in order to work full-time and basically left home doing all manners of odd jobs ranging from being a farm hand to working in a radio repair shop. Within a few more months, Audie’s mother died, and though heart broken Murphy agreed to send three of his younger siblings to an orphanage. (After Audie’s service in World War II he returned to reclaim them.) On December 7, 1941 the Japanese assaulted the United States at Pearl Harbor and though only sixteen, Audie tried to enlist in the Army. He was turned down at that time, and was told to return when he was old enough. By June, 1942 the United States was fighting not only Japan but Germany as well. Audie NOW AVAILABLE could not stand being unable to be involved in the fight for Democracy so with the help of his older sister Corrine, Audie lied about his age

and enlisted in the Army. (The Marines, Navy and the Army paratroopers all turned him down due to his youthful appearance.) Only 5 foot 5 inches and having a very small build, Audie insisted on being a combat soldier, though superior officers tried to convince him to be a cook instead. After his 13 weeks of basic training, Audie was accepted into infantry advanced training at Fort Meade, Maryland. Upon completion of his training, Murphy was sent to Morocco as a replacement in the 3rd Infantry Division. He got his first taste of battle during the invasion of Sicily where he was promptly promoted to corporal after he shot two Italian officers who were trying to desert from service on horseback. A few months later, the 3rd landed on the Italian mainland at Salerno, where Audie’s actions leading a night patrol that was ambushed by a vast amount of German soldiers would earn him another promotion to sergeant. (Three Germans were killed and many others were captured as a result of Murphy’s leadership.) Over the next several months, Audie would go on to earn several more citations for valor as the 3rd Division continued to fight to liberate Italy. >>

In August, 1944, Audie and the 3rd Division would move from Italy into Southern France. Shortly after his arrival there, Murphy’s best friend Lattie Tipton died in his arms after he was shot by German gun fire as he and Murphy tried to knock out a machine gun nest. Murphy, blind with rage, wiped the nest out single handedly. He would then use the German machine gun and the grenades still left at the nest to wipe out several other positions held by the Germans. For this act, Murphy would win the Distinguished Service Cross. The following January, although Audie still suffered from wounds received from mortar fire, was promoted to company commander and received a battlefield promotion to second lieutenant. It was in France where his company engaged the German army in the Battle of Holtzwihr after it had been decimated over a seven week period to a virtually non-existent fighting strength. He directed his unit to the rear of the battle line, where they fired upon the enemy until they ran out of ammunition. Murphy then jumped on a burning German tank and used its’ machine gun to fire upon the enemy. With six more tanks bearing down on his unit, Audie single handedly mowed down most of the infantry that accompanied the tanks, forcing the Germans to withdraw the position. Oh I forgot to mention, Murphy had been wounded in the leg as the tank he was on was engulfed with flames and by all accounts should have blown up with him on it. For this action, Audie received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest honor our country can give a person. Audie still had not turned 20 years old. After being sent back to the United States, Audie returned to Texas. A few years after his return from France, Audie compiled his war diary into a book called “To Hell and Back”. Murphy would end up being an actor making 44 movies, most of which were westerns. One movie would be different, though, as Universal studios, the company Audie was under contract

with bought the rights to his book. Despite Audie’s objections, they chose him to play the role of himself. (Murphy actually wanted Tony Curtis to play the role.) The torment Audie must have had to endure, he finished the movie and it premiered in 1955. The movie went on to become one of the most popular movies that Universal ever made, being its’ top money maker until 1975 when “Jaws” opened. There was no counseling for the war hero, though he had by most accounts killed 240 men with his own hands. Before there was a name for it, Audie suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, or PTSD from the time he left France. Can anyone imagine the torture that must have gone on inside Murphy’s head as he had to actually relive the nightmares that he had every night as he had to act it again on a movie set? Married two times, both of Murphy’s wives said that he couldn’t sleep restfully and would wake up screaming the names of friends who had been killed throughout the war. He became addicted to sleeping pills, but when he realized what they were doing to him, he locked himself in a hotel room going cold turkey to get them out of his system. He would go on to fight his inner demons for the rest of his life until unfortunately for the world, Audie died in a tragic plane crash in 1971 at the age of 46. Audie Murphy is the definition of a “patriot” not a treasonous coward such as Bradley Manning. Americans have lost touch with what a real hero is thinking that a hero is some computer generated image on Xbox or Wii that can wipe out the enemy on a TV screen in the privacy of their home or traitors like Manning or Daniel Elsberg, who leaked war secrets from the Vietnam War. Americans have forgotten men like Audie Murphy. Audie once said, “It’s out of mode nowdays to be patriotic. If you show patriotism you are considered a subversive.” Some of the clowns on the Berkeley City Council have proved the opposite: If you show that you are a subversive you are considered a patriot.

PERSONAL ARMED ROBBERY IN NORTH MACON

Stop da Violence show at Caulfield’s, 414 Cherry St.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a personal armed robbery which took place in the parking lot of the Dunkin Donuts, located at 121 Tom Hill Sr. Blvd, around 6:42a.m. December 24th. 67 year old Gary Law of Jones County just arrived at the Dunkin Donuts when a red Chevrolet Suburban with two occupants pulled behind his vehicle. A black male suspect, brandishing a handgun, jumped out of the suburban and demanded that Law give up the keys to his white 2007 Honda Accord. Once the suspect got the keys to Law’s vehicle, he fled the area. A passing motorist witnessed the incident and followed the suspects as he was on the telephone with the Sheriff’s Office. The suspects headed south on interstate 75, and then got off of the interstate onto the Martin Luther King Blvd off ramp. Bibb Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle on Martin Luther King Blvd. The red Chevrolet suburban sped off and deputies pursued the vehicle several miles before the chase ended on a muddy portion of Bondsview Road in east Bibb County. Bibb Sheriff’s Deputies recovered the Chevrolet Suburban and arrested 20 year old Tyler Lane Caruthers of east Macon. It was reported that the suburban was

stolen earlier in the city of Macon. Caruthers was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Complex and charged with Carjacking, Eluding Police, Obstruction-misdemeanor, Reckless Driving, Theft by Taking Auto, and Probation Violation-State Court. This is Caruthers’s fourth arrest in Bibb County since 2008. The stolen Honda Accord fled the off ramp and headed west on I16 before the witness lost visual site of the vehicle. The suspect that stole the Honda Accord is described as a black male, around 5 feet 5 inches in height. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a blue bandanna. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 1478-746-9441. or Crimestoppers @ 1-877-68-CRIME.

GIVE YOUR PET THE BEST CARE

PREVENTATIVE CARE 101

DR. DEBBIE GADD

2

011 has arrived rather more quickly than any of us are ready for, but a new year gives us all an opportunity to consider what is important in our lives. If you have pets it can seem overwhelming to try and decide what is necessary and what can be overlooked for their long term care. Let’s try to organize the basics of preventative care and make pet care easier this year. If we look at our faithful friends first, we realize that they give us so much affection and unconditional love that we really should put their care high on our list of priorities. The big preventative care items to look at are vaccines, heartworms, internal parasites and external parasites. It is important to remember that each calendar year for our cats and dogs is equivalent to about seven years of aging time for them. Because of this the previous recommendation of once a year physical examinations has been changed to once every six months. This is the equivalent of us getting a physical exam every three and a half years. This increased frequency of contact between your pet and their doctor allows problems to be diagnosed earlier when it is easier to correct them. For adult dogs it is still normal for many of their vaccines or shots to be given once a year. Some vaccines such as kennel cough may be given every six months, while others like distemper may be given up to three years apart. This is determined by your veterinarian who will use all the risk factors such as activity, exposure, age, and medical history to decide on the best protocol for that individual pet. Rabies vaccines are still required annually in many counties while others will accept a three year rabies vaccine. Check with your veterinarian for your local regulations. In Georgia it is essential to have your dog tested for heartworms every year and for them to be on a preventative every month. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquito bites and so this disease is very common in this area. If a dog is not on a preventative they will become infected and eventually die from heart failure as the heart fills with spaghetti like worms that stop it pumping properly. Many heartworm tests also check for tick borne diseases such as Lyme, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Ehrlichia. These diseases if not treated promptly can lead to long term joint damage or organ failure. The last big category of problems are parasites. Intestinal parasites or worms as most people would call them can be conta-

gious to humans (zoonotic) and in some cases can cause some debilitating health problems for our pets. A fecal sample is usually required to detect the eggs or larvae of these parasites so that they can be treated with the right medication. External parasites are commonly ticks and fleas in Georgia. Both can transmit diseases and can cause anemia. Many of these diseases can also affect humans par-

for cats and is highly recommended in this area. The last yearly routine tests that we suggest are for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus. Both these viruses are transmitted between cats so any cats that venture outside are at risk. So basically if you own a cat or dog try

to schedule a physical examination every six months, make sure they are evaluated annually for vaccine requirements, that they have an intestinal parasite check done at least yearly, and for dogs a yearly heartworm test. Give heartworm, flea and tick medications monthly all year. Job done!

Preventatives to control fleas and ticks should be applied once a month all year in Georgia to prevent chronic infections. ticularly the tick diseases. Preventatives to control fleas and ticks should be applied once a month all year in Georgia to prevent chronic infections. Talk to your veterinarian to decide on the best options for your pet. Cats require a similar level of preventative care to dogs throughout their lives. Yearly vaccines or shots are needed particularly if the kitty goes outside. If you own an indoor kitty your vaccine schedule may be adjusted by your veterinarian to every three years if the risk factors are low. Parasite checks are needed just like dogs with the most common problem we see here in cats being tapeworms which are transmitted by our friends the flea. Controlling fleas and ticks on cats is extremely important as there are two diseases that will kill cats very quickly. The first is mycoplasma felis also known as hemobartonella. It is a red blood cell parasite transmitted by fleas that causes a life threatening anemia or low red blood cell count. It can be treated if diagnosed but can be a chronic or long term problem as it is difficult to get rid of. The second big disease we see here is cytauxonosis, a red blood cell parasite transmitted by ticks. The ticks feed off bob cats who carry the parasite and then infect our domestic population. Most patients spike a high fever, turn yellow, and can die very quickly if not treated. Survival rates with treatment may only approach fifty percent in this area. This makes using a flea and tick preventative on all outside cats essential all year, and it is recommended that a flea preventative be used on indoor cats as fleas are easily carried inside by other pets and on our clothing. Cats can also be affected by heartworms by being bitten by an infected mosquito. In cats just a couple of adult heartworms can cause acute death without many clinical symptoms to warn you that your kitty is sick. Monthly heartworm medication is available

LOST & FOUND Lost Cat: River is an 18-lb gray tabby cat with white paws and white chest. He ran off at Arlington Place near the College Street post office. He was wearing a black nylon collar with stars and moons and a tag with my name and phone number. He is a bit skittish but, despite his size, he is very friendly. My other cat and I both miss him dearly. If you see him, please contact Penny at 478-361-3836.

Walk-Ins Welcome! Monday-Saturday 12pm - 10pm Meet the Family... Sunday 12-6pm JOHN All our artists are Blood Borne & CPR Certified, and professionally trained in the art of this ever evolving industry. We are a proud member of the A.P.T.(Alliance of Professional Tattooists). Owner: 'John Wilkins' has been tattooing for 30+ years and his work speaks for itself, with a family of awesome custom tattooists backing him, tattooing anything from cover-ups to custom new school and traditional to realism, the sky is the limit. We do professional exotic piercings, piercing anything from head to toe, from the basic eyebrow or 00 dermal-punch to micro-dermal and dive corsets and also more personal areas you can hang jewelry from. So, stop on by and let us hook you up with a quality tattoo or body modification that you've always wanted and will always wear with pride for years to come.

SEAN Although originally from Mississippi, I was raised here in Middle Georgia. I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday and was hooked from that point on. I have always had a passion for art as well as tattoos so I was driven to combine the two. I am a self-taught artist inspired by the custom pieces of Corey Miller. I have really found my home at Canvas of Flesh and intend on building my career here. My wife and our 3 beautiful kids support my passion and keep me driven to succeed in this industry.

CHAD (JEDI) Moved to Georgia from the West Coast to tattoo at Canvas of Flesh. Been tattooing for 7 years now and can't wait to take it all the way. Been in and around the industry my whole life. One of the many people that inspired me is Bob Tyrrell. Love to tattoo in color but love black and gray even more. I look forward to meeting new people and learning how it's done down here in the south.
