ne of my favorite girls in the world got engaged this week. Jessica Walden got surprised by James T. Weatherford, in front of Owen Wilson, in some fancy art gallery in New York City. Ain’t that sweet. Apparently, Owen has been talking about it ever since. Anyone who matters to me already knows that Jessica has been a part of the 11th Hour family for a very long time. She was the first editor the 11th Hour ever had, and she helped organize our eternally messy and distracted minds into something besides chaos. The Thriller Parade was her idea, The Reader’s Choice Awards happen because she made us do them, Chris Horne became a fulltime staffer because of her prodding, and when she left Chris and I made her a life size snow globe with a leaf blower, a tent and some packing peanuts. She thought it was the greatest thing she’d ever seen. There aren’t many women in the world who give me peace. I’m married

to one of them and the rest are my kin. She and I have been through a lot together, we’ve worked on a lot of great stories together, and rarely a week goes by when we don’t file and plot about something. I really went to bat for this James guy, even taking them to the Players Club for dinner, just the three of us, when she was too nervous to be around him alone. He came on strong, and it wasn’t without my persuasion that he won her heart. Jaime, I’m happy for you buddy, I expect a child to be named after me. Jessica, I don’t think anyone knows what Macon would do without you. With or without that Walden name you carry around, your insight and your inspiration has been as vital as anything can be to this town. I’m proud to call you both my friends, and I hope you both find a peace and happiness together that only the two of you can understand. That’s as sappy as I can get. Kisses and Hugs, BE

12/17: Come one, come all to the Santa Claus Crawl A new organization called the North Macon Bar Association (NMBA) was formed to help patrons explore all of our locally owned bars and grills from Riverside to Forest Hill. And on Friday, December 17th, NMBA will hold their kick-off event from 9pm to 1am, the first annual Santa Claus Crawl. You’ll be able to enjoy drink specials all night long and live music at most the venues for just a $5 purchase of a festive santa hat and one canned good. 12/19: Ty Herndon in Concert - A Benefit for All About Animals

J

oin the Cox Capitol Theatre, Ty Herndon, Macon’s own Mike Kinnebrew, the Nick Malloy Band and Molly Stevens for a Benefit For All About Animals Rescue. All About Animals Rescue is Macon’s only nokill animal shelter, giving dogs and cats a home until permanent homes can be found. They were forced to move into a new facility, but need our help to raise funds to finalize the purchase. In their new home, not only will they offer a home for dogs and cats but they will also have an educational center for kids and adults to learn about socialization and welfare along with a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. Herndon could be basking in his previous musical accomplishments, but continues to prove himself as a powerful musical troubadour. Herndon has experienced Number One songs, Gold Album certification, and over Four Million in CD sales. Herndon already has numerous hits under his belt – “What Mattered Most,” “Hands of a Working Man,” “Living in a Moment,” “Loved Too

Much,” “It Must Be Love,” “A Man Holdin’ On (To a Woman Lettin’ Go)” and “I Want My Goodbye Back” made him one of Country Music’s most consistent radio favorites of the 1990s.On October 2nd, Ty Herndon was nominated for a Grammy. 12/18: Bikes for Bikes Poker Run

T

he Hummingbird Stage and Taproom is hosting Bikes for Bikes Poker Run on December 18. All proceeds go to The Salvation Army Angel Tree sponsored by The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom. The Bikes for Bikes Poker Run will begin at Harley Davidson of Macon with complimentary coffee and donuts and end at The Hummingbird around 4:00PM with more food and music all day. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Registration starts at 10:00am. Ride leaves at 11:00am. Ride Stops: Harley Davidson of Macon Junior’s Junction in Byron AP’s Hidden Hideaway Hooters of Macon The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom The economy will be affecting more children in our community than last year. The Hummingbird has decided to sponsor an Angel Tree of 50 local children that are in danger of receiving nothing from Santa this year. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen at least to these 50 children. For those who would like to donate, organizer Kristen O’Neal says the Salvation Army is in need of Dora the Explorer items, footballs, basketballs and baseball gloves and ball. I’ve been reading Empire of the Summer Moon, about < Quanah Parker and the rise and fall of the Commanche Indians, the fiercest Indian tribe in American history, and I can’t put it down. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the Comanches, often referred to as “Lords of the Plains,” were the single most powerful military force in the region, to the frustration of both the Mexican and U.S. governments. In this chronicle, award-winning journalist

S.G. Gwynne traces the rise of the Comanche people from their roots as primitive bands of hunter-gatherers to their mastery of the horse and emergence as the feared power brokers of the area. At the center of the narrative is the charismatic Quanah Parker. Quanah was the son of a Comanche warrior and a woman named Cynthia Ann Parker, who was kidnapped at the age of nine and chose to stay with the Comanches. Seriously, run out and buy this book. A smoker is being built for me by the good men at Grillmaster Grills. They are building me seven square feet of cooking space, with a pullout firebox. Merry Christmas to me!

I’m a member out at Healey Point Country Club. I know, I know, but blow me, I enjoy playing golf, and swimming and being outside and at a cool hundred bucks a month, especially with the new 3500 square foot fitness center coming Jan 1, it’s as good a money as I spend all year. Not to mention I get member level prices at any of the 26 Cannongate Golf Courses in Georgia. I just had a deer processed out at Boilingbroke’s Thomas Deer Processing, and they did a fine job. I got some back-straps, tenderloins, cubed steak, groud meat, and jalepeno-cheese sausage that’s out of this world. It’s on Harrison Road if you get lucky hunting this year.

The Dead Confederate in Concert at the Cox Capitol Theatre This rockin band from the hotbed of Georgia music, Athens, released their first LP, Wrecking Ball on the TAO record label. After the album, the band kicked off a nationwide tour, featuring a free show at the 40 Watt Club in their hometown in Athens. On October 10, the band made their first nationwide television appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. LISTEN UP TO theKEY Tell us a little about this competition, how it works, the audition, etc? We heard about the All Access Music Search hosted by the GA Lottery through a TV commercial we saw. We started in Macon - Round 1 auditions, progressed to the Atlanta - Round 2 auditions, and then were selected as one of three Rock acts to make it to the "Top 12." The Top 12 are made up of 3 acts from each of the four genres (Rock, Country, Hip-Hp/Rap, and Pop/R&B). This was November 7th when we found out we made it to the Top 12 and it has been quite a "fun ride" since then! With the competition, we have performed in Macon, Savannah, Columbus, and Atlanta twice at various venues. At this point, we are promoting the online voting website until the voting ends on January 12. The online voting will help determine who the winner is in each genre and the winning act in each genre will win a trip to

Hollywood, CA to record at Capitol Records Studio. A LIVE TV program will air on Friday, January 14th at 8:00 PM on WSBTV. The results from the competition will be announced LIVE on the show after each artist is given the opportunity to perform a final original song. In addition to the online voting, a panel of celebrity judges will be used to help determine the winner in each genre. You have to perform your own original music, any albums out there? Some of the songs have been from our previous release "Waiting EP" (www.thekeymusic.com/store) and some of the songs we have been performing are from our upcoming debut full length album to be released in early 2011. ommy Talton was a founding member of Capricorn Records group Cowboy. While in Macon, GA through most of the 70s, Talton was a studio musician recording with artists such as Bonnie Bramlett, Martin Mull, Corky Lang (West, Bruce and Lang, Mountain), Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Clarence Carter, country legend Kitty Wells, Alex and Livingston Taylor, Arthur Conley of Sweet Soul Music fame, and more. He toured extensively throughout the U.S. with Cowboy and with the Gregg Allman tour, from Carnegie Hall (as special guests) to Fillmore West in San Francisco and most cities in between. Talton was also the guitarist on Gregg Allman’s “Laid Back” album. He lived and toured in Europe throughout the 90s and formed a group there, called The Rebelizers, with members of Albert Lee’s band, Hogan’s Heroes. Talton returned to the United States and formed the Tommy Talton Band in 2006. Talton performed at the Beacon Theatre in

New York City on March 17, 2009, as a special guest with The Allman Brothers Band in celebration of the Band’s 40th anniversary. We caught up with Tommy at his home in Marietta, GA. Tell me when you first picked up a guitar. Man, I was probably 8 years old. My favorite uncle, I loved him because he collected all this weird stuff. I'll never forget he had one of those old wire recorders. But he also had an old guitar. One day I leaned over and plucked a string and that was all she wrote. I knew I had to play that thing. How old were you when you first came to Macon? I've told this story before, but I was 20 years old. And a friend I had kept telling me about a guy named Scott that I needed to meet because he wrote songs similar to my own. Eventually we met, and wrote a song together and the next thing we knew we were living in Jacksonville writing songs as Cowboy. Duane came through there one

day, and he was already in Macon with the Brothers. He heard us play and called Phil Walden and we got contracts in the mail without being heard or seen. You can't do that these days I bet. What was the most memorable moment during all that time? It's hard to specify. I think, generally just being around all those guys, in a living room we called Capricorn Studios. It was all so laid back and friendly like a family, and it was just a free and happy time of my life that I enjoyed so much.

We had talked about a reunion for a while, and you know we had started work on an album last year, that got bogged down in business dealings, which is a real shame. Winter storms are punishingly cold and uncomfortable, but are an important source of water for spring growth. Likewise for Dead Confederate, the series of New Jersey blizzards that besieged the recording of sophomore album Sugar (a reference to the record snowfall) also heralded growth from the darker, somber realm of their critically acclaimed Wrecking Ball. With an evolving approach and focused, streamlined sound, Sugar explores new styles beyond the aching, bleak psychadelia of the debut.This Show at the Capitol will be prefaced by a reuniting of the Roly-Bots, Macon’s favorite band last year, and it is said DC has a surprise up their sleeve.

Cowboy Reunion @ Capitol Theatre

While not exactly the house band for Phil Walden's Macon, Georgia-based Capricorn Records label, the members of the acoustic aggregate Cowboy - consisting of Scott Boyer (guitars/violin/vocals), Tommy Talton (guitars/vocals), Bill Pillmore (piano/guitar/fiddle/vocals), Tomm Wynn (drums/percussion), George Clark (bass) and Pete Kowalke (guitars/vocals/ drums) - could be found on recordings by The Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman (whom they regularly supported), Alex Taylor, and Bonnie Bramlett. Their debut "Reach for the Sky" (1970) amply shows off their rural whimsy and substantial acoustic capacities. While their country-rock leanings are comparable to the Hearts & Flowers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or Pure Prairie League, they rely on their solid original material rather than adaptations and variations on traditional works and standards from the genre.

Born, bred and raised in Macon Georgia, the birthplace of southern rock, Cliff Howard counts among his earliest musical memories seeing and hearing Wet Willie perform in Central City Park in 1973. Cliff's influences includes everything from The Allman Brothers Band to Joe Cocker to Bob Seger to John Mellencamp. Cliff's statement,"I love singing, I love being on stage. I love hearing the crowd respond to our music and I love seeing people have a good time", drives home the fact that he is most at home when he is entertaining.

The sonic interpreter of indie freak folk music Efren is a folk group hinting on the psychedelic, from areas around Athens, GA. Reaching out into the musical world with introspective lyrics and brooding energy, efren entertains on many levels. In the past few month efren has recorded, released and supported the debut album ‘Thunder and Moan’ and now has a follow up EP ‘Always Been a Bleeder’. The recorded albums are hard and quiet, while the live show invigorates the music and delves deeper into the compositions, exploring the sonic textures.

Chris Hicks @ The Hummingbird

Chris Hicks is a bluesy Southern rock guitarist who has played with Gregg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band, among others. Based in Macon, GA, where he was inspired by Otis Redding and James Brown, Hicks played with his band the Experience at various blues festivals around the South. His group opened up for Steppenwolf and Charlie Daniels during the 1980s, and later that decade, Hicks was asked to join the Outlaws. After the Outlaws disbanded in 1996, Hicks was the lead guitarist for the Marshall Tucker Band for one year before he became a solo act.

You can guess what band this tribute band lives for. And yes they rock like Crue, look like Crue and lord knows what else they do like Crue.

We know, we left out some stuff. We just didn't have the room. Thanks for all the emails. we've gotten more response from the “Best of 200 Issues” than we've ever gotten, and since you enjoyed it so much, we figured we'd include some of the articles you asked about. Over the past several years, we just can't say what a good time we've had telling the stories of our town. Our lives go by here at the 11th Hour home, two weeks at a time, and while it does go too fast, we're very thankful, especially over the holidays that it's spent doing this.... We are looking forward to the new year and are already planning some interesting new stories to tell.

THE WATCHMEN Dempsey residents keep watch over downtown. So why don’t they feel safe in their own homes? “In assuming responsibility for the management and operation of your community, we know we have work to do. Almost 30 thousand (sic) residents of the units we manage experience the Barkan difference every day — a combination of long experience, professional skills and a collaborative corporate culture — all designed to assure you and your fellow residents enjoy a safe, comfortable and convenient quality of life.” That’s from the Barkan Management Company’s website and is met with laughter from some of the Dempsians gathered around as I recite it. While most would agree that it’s convenient to be downtown because of nearby public transportation, not all residents feel that safety and comfort that Barkan claims to provide for all its residents. “Think about it this way,” says one resident, “the fellow that we saw down here trying to sell your stuff was my neighbor a couple of weeks ago. Even though they kicked him out, they were unable to get his key from him. He can come in here anytime he feels like it, and there are plenty more like him.” Jaunice Harris says, “My daughter comes to visit me here, and it’s hard to feel safe with people like that roaming the halls, not to mention drugs, prostitution and everything else that goes on here.” Bobby Hebble Jr., a paratrooper in Vietnam who now lives at the old hotel, doesn’t make a habit of being scared, but he can understand why some folks would be. “I’ve had folks try and open my door at all hours of the night, and all sorts of people roam the halls here at all hours. Security can’t seem to do anything with them.” Security at the hotel is provided by two residents, both senior citizens. Their job includes roaming the endless stairwells and hallways and being on-call for residents that have problems. If someone falls it’s their job to get the paramedics into the building. If a homeless person is smoking crack in the hallway, it’s their job to get them out. It could be said that this is a job better suited for a security firm, and all of those I spoke with at the Dempsey would agree. - BRAD EVANS, October 2009 (Note: Since this article the Dempsey has hired a full-time security guard.)

People thought I was crazy when I left my state benefits at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and accepted my renegade dream job as editor of the 11th Hour. It was just around the time the publication was turning a corner in the community and stirring it in the right way. While some folks in Macon didn't know what to think of Brad and Meagan Evans and their little mom-and-pop paper, everyone else was starting to pay attention. They may have been the new kids, but they were the scrappy ones in the school yard you wanted to cheer on. You can't help but love an underdog. The Telegraph, Cherry Blossom and even the Chamber tried to ignore the 11th Hour's growing presence - even rejecting us at times. All it did was make us work harder. And play harder. And gave us just enough rebel incentive to make us even more determined. Yeah, we had a margarita machine in the office at one time, but we also spent countless hours busting our butts to produce a publication that Macon, Georgia could believe in.

Fans of superhero comics should take notice. Debuting in this issue of the 11th Hour is the first installment of the Macon-centric superhero tale Macon Man. Created by writer/artist Craig Hamilton and producer Terrell Sandefur, the series plans to explore the lives and adventures of several teenage heroes, the strip’s eponymous hero, and the city of Macon itself throughout its run with the 11th Hour. - June 5, 2010

SITTIN’ ON THE PORCH WITH THE LATE EDDIE KIRKLAND “When I first saw a guitar was way back in the fifties…..All my daddy’s people used to have a Saturday Night Fish fry down in the bottom, down in the woods. They would drink stump liquor and eat catfish and stuff like that….so I would ease off on the weekend from Mama and them and go down in the woods and watch them sing and dance and play. One guy would be blowing a harp, one would be playing the guitar and another would be beating on a tin tub for a drum. They didn’t have none of that ‘lectricity stuff. So I’d stand on the edge of the woods and watch the guitar play. I didn’t care too much about the rest of it. I watched how he made the notes real close. But we didn’t have no money to buy a guitar with, so I went home and built one our of a guitar box.” - Johnny Jenkins - BRAD EVANS, November 2005. It was the first interview he’d given in a decade and the last one he gave before he passed away. To this day, it still one of Brad’s favorite interviews.

Q&A WITH GREGG ALLMAN “Hell no I didn’t know I was a teen heartthrob. And it was a bunch to deal with. There were so many people pulling on you. But like I said, the main thing is that all this pressure you’re dealing with cannot affect the artistry you’re trying to convey. You are so afraid that you are going to let some of that crap get to you. It’s bothering no one but you. You are just afraid you are going to let it hamper what you’re doing, and the booze, and the drugs, and everything else, just sort of help you deal with it, I guess, or at least get away from it. You know, Willie Nelson inducted me into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was so drunk I was about to fall down, man, and there I was, accepting this induction from Willie Nelson into the Hall of Fame. Willie looked at me and said, “Hey man, are you alright?” and I looked up at him, barely, you know, because I was so drunk, and said, “No man, I am not alright.” I knew then that me and booze had to part ways.” - BRAD EVANS, June 2009

My time with the 11th Hour gave me a chance to write my heart out. From meth abuse and local sex offenders to trying to track down a local call girl for our prostitution story, we were fearless in what we put in the paper. Former mayors, local elected officials, the Goat Man, Cocky Glover, Elvira and Billy Bob Thornton were just some of my favorite characters who made our pages along the way. As editor, I caught the heat from Brad's cursing and the Food Dude's food reviews, and I loved every minute of defending our printed rebel yell. Brad's still cussing, but the Food Dude Gary Schecterle has definitely toned things down with his M Food & Culture. The Telegraph got a new publisher and gave up the turf war. The Cherry Blossom also came around and even asked Brad to wear a pink jacket. We all have grown up a lot along the way. My time with the 11th Hour was the turning point in my career. It helped the community notice the young guns like us who took our dogs to work and wore flip flops nearly everyday, yet were ready to make change happen, not just talk about it. It wasn't just a job. There was a reason we were all brought together. It was a training ground for our passion for the community and our friendships that still stand strong today. I miss the days of walking into the office and finding Chris Horne asleep on the couch after staying up all night trying to make deadline. I miss working desk-to-desk with Meagan as we furiously finished up the paper and get it to the printer. I miss those stories and dreams that Brad and I plotted together and had a blast chasing along the way. It truly was the best job I'll ever have. And damn it, if I could just win the lottery, I'd do it all over again, for free. Congrats to Macon's 11th Hour on your 200th issue! I know you told me you only wanted a couple of sentences, but you also know I've always exceeded my word limit. Brad and Meg, you remain my heroes. Thanks for providing the best paycheck in town. BRUNCH AT J CHRISTOPHERS Bright and vibrant describes both the staff and atmosphere of J. Christopher’s. From canvases sporting Presidents playing cards to a huge close-up of Clint Eastwood, orange walls display interesting artwork that demands as much attention as the menu. Cloth napkins, heavy cast-iron skillets, and a coffee bar are just some of the “perks” (pun intended) for patrons of one of Macon’s newest franchises.

Serving breakfast all day, every day, and lunch from 11 to 2 p.m. Monday—Saturday, J. Christopher’s offers their own take on some old favorites. Blueberry Crunchcakes ($7.29), a signature dish, is a breakfast favorite combining blueberries and granola inside the traditional pancake. Got a hankering for poached eggs? Try Eggs Benedict ($8.79), poached eggs and Canadian bacon on an English muffin, smothered in Hollandaise sauce and served with oven-roasted potatoes and fresh fruit garnish. For those living on the “light side,” there’s a breakfast parfait ($5.29): a combination of low-fat vanilla yogurt, honey almond granola, sliced strawberries and whole blueberries—all topped with whipped cream. Breakfast isn’t the only time you’ll find eggs on the menu. Among the requisite salads, soups and sandwiches, customers will find some unusual taste choices. The Clubhouse Burger ($8.99) is a 1/2 pound of Certified Angus Beef topped with Cheddar and Jack cheese, two strips of bacon and a fried egg. The Pimento Burger combines the burger with, you guessed it, a heaping helping of pimento cheese ($8.59). Burgers not your cup of tea? Then why

not try another favorite: East Cobb Melt ($8.59), Chicken Waldorf Salad and sliced tomato atop an English muffin topped with Cheddar cheese and broiled. With a robust menu, J. Christopher’s offers unique dishes that will keep you coming back to try something new. Quesadillas, omelets, and a $4.99 menu just for kids are some of the other surprises you will find. Specialty skillets offer savory roasted potatoes mixed with your choice of favorite ingredients like turkey, avocado, and pico de gallo for breakfast, and Shrimp & Grits for lunch offer a low country dish of shrimp sautéed with Andouille sausage in Tasso gravy and served on a J. Christopher’s famous creamy grits. In keeping with the non-traditional menu, beverages are not the normal fare: the house blend is a Costa Rica Dota “San Gabriel” coffee with a hint of chocolate; Don Giovanni’s Espresso Belisimo is roasted fresh the day it is shipped to J. KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE TOM ELLINGTON Macon City Council Ward 3, Post 3

or years Cox Communications provided a valuable window into city government for its basic cable subscribers. Channel 14 was not always exciting or entertaining (although it may have inadvertently provided some laughs), but it was a useful way for citizens to keep tabs on elected officials. As Justice Louis Brandeis wrote nearly a century ago, “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman.” On Oct. 18, Cox switched off that light for its basic cable customers, moving the three public, educational and government (or PEG) channels that had long occupied channels 14, 17 and 18 and making them inaccessible to basic cable customers who have older televisions. It was a disappointing move for a company that has a track record of being a good corporate citizen that makes positive contributions to the community. The Capitol Theatre, the MAGA film festival and the Macon Symphony Orchestra are just a

few of the institutions that have benefited from the generosity of Cox. So why is Cox now turning its back on Macon’s citizens? I have spoken to representatives of the company, and they argue that digital cable is the future, that analog is on the way out and that eventually every cable channel will be digital. This argument strikes me as being both true and irrelevant to our current situation. Analog channels use much more bandwidth than digital; over-the-air stations have already moved to exclusively digital feeds. But the fact remains that basic cable for Cox’s Macon subscribers is an analog product, and while the PEG channels have been moved to the digital side. Local broadcasters like WMAZ and WMGT have not had their channels moved to the digital side because they have contracts with Cox designating their channel placement. If Cox moved them today, those stations would sue – and win. Cox also carries a variety cable networks on analog, for example the Cartoon Network, CMT and QVC. In moving the PEG channels while leaving other analog channels in place, Cox is telling us that its commitment to public service is less important than cartoons, country music and home shopping.

@ If local broadcasters were able to secure their locations in the cable lineup, one might wonder why the city of Macon did not do the same for the PEG channels. The fact is that the city did. Cox used to have a franchise agreement with the city of Macon in which, among other things, it agreed to provide the PEG channels in return for its access to public right-of-ways, access that is absolutely essential to its ability to do business. However, in 2007, the General Assembly changed the law, allowing cable companies to opt out of agreements with local governments in favor of a state franchise agreement. Cox exercised that option. Even under the less stringent state regulations, though, Cox still has a legal (not to mention moral) obligation to public service, including support of the PEG channels. As the Telegraph recently reported, I have been talking to the city attorney’s office about what the city’s legal options are in getting those channels restored. Of course, I would hope that legal action would not be necessary. I don’t know how this situation will work out, but I do know what should happen. Cox should make Channel 14 and the other PEG channels truly In the meantime, if you want to keep an eye on city government, there are other avenues you can use. • You can come to a meeting. The full council holds regular meetings at City Hall at 6.p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Committees meet on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, as well as some Wednesdays. week’s meetings is generally posted on the city’s Web site, http://cityofmacon.net, late on Friday afternoons. • If you have Internet access, video of full council meetings streams live on the city’s Web site, where it is also archived for later viewing. • If you have a digital cable box, the city’s channel continues to appear on Channel 14. • f you have a newer digital-enabled TV and basic cable, the city’s channel appears at 94.1. (The educational channel is at 93.1, and the public access channel is at 88.6). That seems like a lot of options, but let’s remember that Macon remains a place with a great deal of poverty. Many of our citizens do not have Internet access and may not be able to make it to City Hall for reasons of age or infirmity. For many of them, basic cable provided their one window into their city government. That group may not be a majority of our citizens, and as Cox argues it may not be a majority of their customers. That group is certainly not the most influential in our community, and their voices may not carry the farthest. Nevertheless, they are still citizens, and we would all do well to remember that. Yeah, me too. Especially if — as many knowledgeable people are suggesting — these random searches don’t actually make anyone safer at all. They just make people FEEL safer. And people who feel safe are easier to move through the hoops of the system. It’s called security theater — lots of obvious official-looking activity, no real underlying effectiveness. Even worse, it actually increases the threat of eventual terrorist success (so says an interesting paper I read entitled “Carnival Booth: An Algorithm for Defeating the ComputerAssisted Passenger Screening System” by Samidh Chakrabarti and Aaron Strauss). Systems like CAPS have been demonstrated to REDUCE the effectiveness of searching, making them LESS effective than random searches since terrorists can test the system and use those who are searched least often for their operations. In other words, all that obvious luggage checking and groin inspecting is a surefire way of providing any smart terrorist with lots of data about which profiles trigger a more invasive search.

So here’s what we’re getting for our efforts: smarter terrorists. Plus angry passengers, wasted time, wasted money, all the while dealing a very substantial blow to the freedoms we’re supposed to be fighting to protect. Roger Cohen of The New York Times said it best in his op-ed piece The Real Threat to America: “I don’t doubt the patriotism of the Americans involved in keeping the country safe, nor do I discount the threat, but I am sure of this: The unfettered growth of the Department of Homeland Security and the T.S.A. represent a greater longterm threat to the prosperity, character and wellbeing of the United States than a few madmen in the valleys of Waziristan or the voids of Yemen.” The Fourth Amendment to our Constitution guarantees “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” But hey, the Constitution is just a piece of paper. The Liberty Bell is just a hunk of metal. And that’s all they ever will be unless the freedom they represent remains robust and thriving and real. Even in line at the airport.

few years ago, I went to see the Liberty Bell, that hallowed symbol of American revolutionary freedom. In this post 9/11 world, I didn’t think twice about handing over my coat and bag before walking through the metal detector. A friend of mine refused, however. “It’s the LIBERTY Bell,” he said. “Get it? Ben Franklin wouldn’t hand you his coat, and I’m not going to either.” They didn’t get it, and he didn’t get to see Liberty Bell. I did, but the uncomfortable truth of what I’d sacrificed to do so made it a hollow experience. I pondered this recently as I was being intimately frisked by TSA. When I asked the bluegloved official why I got picked yet again for the “special” pat-down, she assured me it was random. She lied. Airports actually use a program called CAPS (Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System) which screens passenger profiles and chooses which people to search. And it pegs me — a known pacifist with absolutely no criminal record whatsoever — as a threat, again and again. And this new search? To call it invasive is no exaggeration — hands over and under my breasts, inside my thighs. All the way to second

base and halfway to third. And I went along with it — grumpy, spread-eagled, sock-clad, arms held out to the side — because I wanted to go home. All that time being groped led me to wonder what is it about me that makes CAPS think I’m a terrorist? After all, I can think of no group less likely to show up in the news for attempting to smuggle explosives on a plane than middleaged American women. Please. We’ve got so much to do we can barely keep up with our purses. Keeping track of which orifice contains the matches and which contains the jet fuel is beyond most of us. An equally middle-aged female friend has a theory. She thinks that people like me — and her, and the elderly and the little kids — get targeted because we’re less likely to cause problems. Which leads to an even more insidious conclusion — we’re being selected not because we’re MORE likely to be potentially dangerous and combative; we’re selected because we’re LESS likely. Like any sprawling behemoth of an organization, TSA has quotas to make — this many people through the line per hour per day, this many of them searched. Pretend you’re in charge of making this process go smoothly — now, which population would you pick to examine further? The truly random sampling? Or the one that’s least likely to slow the line?

NOIT’SMORE ANCHOR BABIES TIME TO REPEAL THE 14TH AMENDMENT

ow that the general elections are over we can finally start focusing on issues rather than personalities. The Republican controlled House of Representatives has been given a responsibility by the American electorate like no other body of government since 1948 and from what I understand they will not be resting on their laurels. One of the major issues they will be tackling is illegal immigration and what effect it has on our society. I’d like to share my own views on what changes are needed. First and foremost, I feel that the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution should be repealed. Section One of the Amendment, the “Citizenship Clause”, reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” Since 1868, when the 14th Amendment was ratified, this section has given people of the world the right to plant “anchor babies”, children delivered within the United States by parents who are not citizens, granting those children citizenship and thereby allowing the parents to remain in the country. I say it is time for this practice to come to a halt. Quite honestly, as I have researched this article, I have come to believe that it was in fact far from the intent of Senator Jacob Howard, the author of Section One. In the debates and discussions in the Senate, Howard was very clear that his proposed section excluded American Indians who maintained their tribal ties (These Native Americans were not given full citizenship until 1924 under the Indian Citizenship Act). In addition, he added that, “persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers” were also ineligible for automatic citizenship. I NOW AVAILABLE feel though that it was Howard’s restrictions towards Native Americans that most closely illustrate why this clause has been abused for

over a century - the primary reason that Howard felt that children of Native American parents who were members of tribes should not be automatically given citizenship is because those same Native Americans did not pay taxes. For the record, I disagree with Senator Howard about the Native Americans - this was their country first and they should have been given citizenship no matter what the circumstances. But I do agree with his intent as it relates to illegal immigrants who come to the United States with the sole purpose of planting an anchor child. Do I blame the parents? Hell no I don’t. But neither they nor their unborn child are my problem and we as a country should not be responsible for them as we are now. I say do away with the whole Amendment and make these children apply for citizenship like anyone else wanting to come into our country. Second, I feel that a system should be set up where people who want to become citizens should have to pay for this right. Upon the first request made for citizenship, a deposit of $10,000 per person should be required to even be considered, with a cap of $25,000 per family. The money should go into the educational system of the state in which the immigrants are applying for residency to. After admission, the same immigrant should be required to pay a tax through their payroll after they get a job. The money received from the payroll tax would be split between paying for their children’s education and healthcare. They would be given a six month period to get employment and if they are unable to find work, they would be deported. The entrance deposit could be waived if the head of the household committed to five years service in the military, local law enforcement or Border Patrol. Further, a cap would be instituted as to how much money these new citizens could send back to their home country. Next, we need to commit resources to our Border Patrol and finish the fence on our southern border with Mexico. CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

FOOTBALL TO RESUME AT MERCER AFTER 70 YEARS

T

he sights and sounds of intercollegiate football will be returning to the Mercer University campus after a 70-year absence. The University’s Board of Trustees today unanimously approved a plan to resume competition in football in the fall of 2013. Mercer currently fields 15 men’s and women’s sports and is the only private university in Georgia to compete in NCAA Division I athletics. “This was a well-thought-out, carefully deliberated decision by the board that followed more than two years of study and discussion,” chairman W. Homer Drake Jr. said at a University Center news conference following the trustees meeting. “The board’s action today reflects the trustees’ support for President Underwood’s ongoing efforts to further strengthen the University’s academic profile, reputation, and level of student engagement.” Mercer President William D. Underwood told a packed news conference audience that the University is seeking membership in the Pioneer Football League, a footballonly conference made up of colleges and universities that participate in NCAA Division I non-scholarship football. Its current members include Butler University, Campbell University, Davidson College, the University of Dayton, Drake University, Jacksonville University, Marist College, Morehead State, the University of San Diego, and Valparaiso University. The Pioneer League is one of three conferences – the others being the Ivy League and the

Patriot League – composed of institutions fielding non-scholarship football teams. “By attracting and retaining outstanding students, by aligning the University with other leading colleges and universities, and by raising the visibility of the University through the exposure that a football program brings, the sport will play a role in achieving Mercer’s aspiration of being more widely recognized among the ranks of America’s finest private institutions,” Underwood said. Although Mercer has not competed in football since 1941, the University at one time had a rich football tradition. The first intercollegiate football game in the state – and one of the first in the Southeast – pitted Mercer against the University of Georgia in January of 1892. Georgia Tech’s first football game was against Mercer in November 1892, a 12-6 victory for the Bears. Mercer’s last football game was against Chattanooga. The University expects to form a search committee for a head coach within the next few weeks and begin a national search in early 2011. Mercer also is exploring several possible sites for a stadium, including an on-campus location, and has begun fundraising for the facility. “Over the next three years, we will need to complete our fund-raising, build a stadium, hire coaches and recruit student-athletes,” Underwood said, “but today’s decision by the board puts in motion Mercer’s return to the gridiron.”

BLOTTER { MACON’S CRIME SCENE } HUMAN REMAINS FOUND

Tuesday, December 7, The Macon Police Department was called to Ferguson Street after a citizen, who was walking his dog, discovered a human skull. The skull was intact, with no visible signs of trauma. It's believed that the skull had been there for a significant period of time. Two other bones were found in proximity to the skull. MPD will be studying its missing persons file in order to determine if any missing person might be linked to these remains. The remains were given to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones and will be sent to the state crime lab for examination. TWO ARRESTED IN SCARLET CARSON SHOOTINGS

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Investigators charged two Macon men in connection with the shooting that took place at the Scarlett Carson’s night club where three people were shot. Marvin J. King, 25 years old from Macon, 24 year old Kendrick Hill of Macon, and 23 year old Willie Currie of Macon, were shot outside of the Scarlet Carson’s nightclub, located at 4173 Cavalier Drive around 3:00a.m., on November 14, 2010.

Germany Durrell Ray, age 18 from Macon has been charged with 6 counts of Aggravated Assault. He is being charged with shooting of three men just outside of the Scarlett Carson’s nightclub. Ray also shot at a vehicle carrying three different men as it was exiting the night club parking lot. Germany Ray has also been charged by the Macon Police Department in connection with the death of Vishnu Patel. Tony Deshawn Evans, age 21 of Macon has also been charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault. He was driving the vehicle when Germany Ray shot at three men as they were leaving the night club’s parking lot. Both men are currently being held in the Bibb Law Enforcement Complex.

ARREST WARRENT OUT FOR BB&T ROBBERY

Macon Police have issued an arrest warrant for 52 year-old Ronnie Walter Rice, Jr., a white male that resides in Macon. Rice is being sought in connection with a commercial bank robbery that occurred at the Riverside Drive branch of the BB & T bank. Rice was released from prison in September 2010 for a previous bank robbery. He has logged 14 arrests between 1990 and 1998. DEVOTCHKA, THE DECEMBERISTS, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS... DeVotchKa are currently spending some time in the music-industry wasteland of Tucson, Arizona in order to write and begin work on their next album, which will serve as the follow up to their 2008 Anti Records debut set, A Mad and Faithful Telling. No word yet on a release date - although 2011 is likely - but you can probably count on a somewhat desolate theme, given their current locale, plus, of course, the inclusion of more of DeVotchKa's wacky and innovative selections of instruments from the theramin to the tuba... The Decemberists have been in the studio since around June of this year working on what will be their sixth album, which finally has a name - the band's The King is Dead is also now set for release in January 2011. Singer Colin Meloy has said that this particular set is more "straightforward folkrock," inspired in part by R.E.M. - and, as a matter of fact, the set will feature guest appearances by both R.E.M.'s own Peter Buck, as well as singer Gillian Welch... U.K. singer-songwriter Adele has completed work on her latest album, too, which she collaborated on with British producer Paul Epworth and Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin, in addition to doing some songwriting with the likes of Francis White, Jim Abbiss, Ryan Tedder, Fraser T. Smith, and (Semisonic's) Dan Wilson.

ife is short so you should seize every moment of it and live it to the full. Not many people are lucky enough to realize this goal in a lifetime but as a veterinarian who is passionate about everything in her life I have managed to achieve this most of the time. There is no better feeling than to wake up each morning and be excited about the day ahead, to be drinking that first glorious cup of coffee at 5am while juggling a shower alongside a long list of wonderful possibilities and challenges for the day. This is what makes me feel alive each and every day, ever since I decided at age eleven that I was going to treat animals. What I didn’t realize at the time was how many humans I would help heal along the way by saving their four legged friends. I was born and grew up in glorious old England with three brothers and a menagerie of all imaginable animals. It always seemed normal for me to be sharing my personal space with something hairy that would purr or rumble or grunt. My parents were incredibly tolerant of all my boxes, cages, and jars that contained various assortments of creatures and science experiments (I remember my dad shouting “Deborah your snails have all escaped again” ,not so bad except he was in the bathroom at the time!!) When I was sixteen I was finally allowed to work at a veterinary clinic after school and at the weekends. This was total bliss for me, there was so much to discover and see for the first time that my heart would start to pound as I approached the veterinary surgery (the name for a veterinary clinic in England). I would sweep and mop

floors and do laundry so that I could have the opportunity to watch surgery and medicine and develop radiographs by hand. I knew that this was my passion and nothing else in life would matter if I couldn’t do this every day. My obsession with this passion for veterinary medicine took me on a long journey in order to achieve my dreams. I finally found myself studying veterinary medicine in a foreign country surrounded by people who thought I sounded funny every time I spoke. Athens Georgia became my home for six years while I completed undergraduate and then graduate requirements to finally walk across the stage and be called Doctor. In a lifetime there are a handful of moments that will be with you forever and graduation will be one of those awesome moments that became permanently engraved into my memory. It was inevitable that I would open my own clinic as my desire to practice only the best medicine would be hard to achieve under another person’s rules and would result in conflict rather than personal growth. I graduated in 2000 with my clinic plans already in place. I drew out the floor plan during junior year and had it put on architectural paper by senior year. While we physically built Animal Doctors of Gray from the ground up in 2000 to 2001 I worked at several clinics to keep myself busy. Animal Doctors opened in July of 2001 and has been incredibly busy ever since then. This summer we gained an associate, Dr Meredith Pavlovsky who is another UGA graduate. Next summer we are expecting to add a third veterinarian as we get ready to open a large animal hospital located on Hwy 49 between Milledgville and Macon. The large animal hospital will serve a wide geographical area and will be able to fill a much needed void in large animal care. Animal Doctors currently offers all small animal medical and surgical services, as well as boarding and grooming at the Gray location. We are also delighted to treat your exotic pets with both myself and Dr P having experience in this area of veterinary medicine. We currently offer an ambulatory large animal service (we can come to you) as needed by our clients. Our hospital is equipped with x-ray, laser, full surgery suite, ultrasound, and a laboratory that can have test results ready in 10-20 minutes. ocal law enforcement is understaffed, underpaid and outnumbered in defense of our country. I submit that we should make the U. S. Border Patrol a separate branch of the military and bring it under the jurisdiction of the Pentagon, thus separating it from the office of Homeland Security. Until this mess is cleaned up on our border with Mexico, we should have continuous patrols set up guarding it. They should be fully equipped with military type helicopters, tanks and aircraft as needed. And they are needed. Badly needed. I saw one report a few weeks ago that showed a school in Arizona that was forced to put a barbed wire fence completely around it to keep the drug thugs out. One Arizona rancher says that “Mexican drug cartels are running this

Illegal immigration will continue to be a problem so long as our lawmakers keep putting it on the back burner. The time has come for them to act in our defense; not only for our physical safety, but for our econonmic stability. Thankfully it appears that the next Congress is in position to actually take some initiative and do something. If I have to pay five dollars for a head of lettuce so be it. But I would rather pay five dollars for a head of lettuce than have our country stolen away from us one piece at a time by drug lords and people on welfare who can’t even speak our language.
