very year about this time, when most people are drinking cider and stuffing socks full of toys, we here at the 11th Hour fall into that group of people who the holidays stress out. Not only do we have three papers to put out, money to try and collect, and year-end stuff to do, but we also hit the road at Christmas. Today, right after we get all the papers delivered, we head to Amelia Island to visit with my brother’s family and do my side of the family’s Christmas, and on Tuesday as soon as we return we embark on the 13-hour drive to Northern Michigan to visit with Meg’s family. We have to hurry back the day after Christmas though, in order to get yet another edition out before the New Year. Our plans on New Years Eve? Putting out papers. When our schedule gets back to normal, and the Ugly Sweater parties are over, we get to relax for a bit. So what do we want for Christmas? Just to get through the next couple of

2011 weeks will be fine with me. In January we start planning again for the 2011 Readers Choice Awards. The nomination ballot is now up online. Check out our Facebook page to nominate your favorite bars, restaurants, bands and community champions. I really don’t know yet what the award show will bring this year. We balk every year, saying we don’t know if we can do it again or top last year. But we always do, so I’m sure that in late January chaos will begin again. We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks for reading.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

Knuckle, a new documentary now out on DVD, took twelve years to make and gives an inside look at the world of Irish travelers (gypsies), paying close attention to the bare-knuckle fistfights fueled by disputes between rival clans. That’s for sure on my watch list this week. Due to my absence at the theatre over the last several months, I’m also anticipating going to see Mission Impossible, Ghost Protocol and the new Sherlock Holmes installment as soon as they get here because that’s the only place they’ll be fun to watch. Christmas is coming, and if you need some

good stocking stuffers you might want to head over to Rodeo Beach, in Mercer Village. Anyone who likes to be outside, be it on water or on land, will love this place. They carry Patagonia now, and Merrell shoes. Also cool watches, sunglasses, bikes, and paddleboards are just a few of the items I covet when I enter that store, and the list goes on. Also, it’s owned by JJ Hobbs and Christyanne Gasper, two awesome ladies who we are lucky to have snagged here in Macon. Shop Local. If you need something a little different for your stocking stuffer snap up a Rock Candy Tour certificate while they are available. Led by Capricorn princess Jessica Walden, you really can’t get any closer to what this town used to be like when it was home to stars like Otis Redding, and

the Allman Brothers. It’s $15 bucks for a walking tour and $20 for a Trolley Tour, affordable for anyone and needed by everyone. Reserve your spot on the next Macon Music Walking Stroll, to be held Monday, Dec. 26 at1 p.m. The group will meet at Washington Park and the cost is $15. I entered the world of Duck Hunting this past weekend. My friend, Slade Edwards, and I got up at 4:30 both Saturday and Sunday morning, put in the Ocmulgee River in Twiggs County and rode upriver to a blind where we saw plenty of birds flying and shot at several zooming down the river. I became addicted to the sport. Just being out on the river that early is pretty awesome, even if a little cold, and seeing his young lab Cash, swim out and retrieve a downed bird was worth the trip, by itself.

A

lesson I learned shortly after moving to Macon from New York City a year and a half ago was to never miss an important show. In New York, I could step back -take a short hiatus from seeing live music -- and confidently assume that I could play catch-up. Here in Macon, the touring bands swing through infrequently, and the local acts need the support now -- not next week or next month. This idea took a little time to get used to, but it has paid off in a number of ways. I have heard beautiful music in Macon that I would have never sought out elsewhere. I’ve seen arresting art work on the walls of The 567, and the Contemporary Arts Exchange, and have witnessed wonderful theater and dance performances at Macon State College and Mercer. Granted, I have also seen some performances and works that I would just as soon forget, but they are the exception, and a small price to pay to participate in a fledgling, unpredictable, but excitingly diverse artistic scene. As an 11th Hour reader, you most likely share similar views on the importance of supporting artists, and the bars, performance spaces, galleries, and theaters that host them, and in

this column I will make every effort to avoid preaching to the choir. Instead, I will report on the performances and exhibits, artists and club owners, fans and -- ocasionally -- detractors in the hope of inspiring conversation and -- more importantly -participation. In the past two weeks, my efforts to be present have been truly tested by a hectic work schedule and the frantic lead-up to the holidays, but I was able to catch some great performances around town. On First Friday at Roasted -- the coffee shop by day, bar and performance space by night -- I caught ClarkAfterDark a.k.a Clark Bush coaxing jazz and pop loops from a paperback-sized sampler, patching in beats and fragments of song with a touch of the finger to perfect a groove. The diverse and appreciative audience took in Clark’s ethereal blend of Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Joanna Newsom while sipping beer and perusing artist William Dantzler’s mixed-media works hanging on the walls. DJ Roger Riddle closed out the night with a supremely soulful set that mixed nineties staples by the Fugees and a sample of an Eminem tune with classic soul strains from James Brown and Bill Withers. By the time Withers’ soaring, ecstatic final chorus on “Lovely Day” came across the speakers everyone was on their on their feet. Last week, I also got a chance to hear the David Milligan trio perform an inspired set of jazz and Christmas standards at the Vineville home of Edward and Priscilla Esser as part of the Jazz Association of Macon’s annual Holiday Jam. Since the mid-1980’s the Jazz Association has fostered the appreciation of jazz in middle Georgia through concerts, classes and community outreach. Their holiday party was low-key -- especially in comparison to their annual Jazz and Arts on Riverdale festival - but was a great opportunity to hear swinging music and meet some fellow music lovers.

As many of you know, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jaimoe is one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, and 43 years later is still one of the drummers in the group. INTERVIEW BY BRAD EVANS

Really life changing. The only thing it can compare to, and I’m sure some of your readers will understand this, the only thing it can compare to would be an LSD trip. Our military is an extraordinary group of people. And our politicians only give them a bunch of lip service with all their dancing around. I find it ridiculous that politicians talk about how great of a sacrifice it is to join the military and then put on the brakes when you ask a rich person to put a few more dollars in the coffers. That’s way too much of a sacrifice. It’s bullshit. Any presidential candidates out there right now that disgusts you more than the others? Uh. Yeah. I mean sure. Whoever told Rick Perry to run should all be sent to counseling. It’s insulting. The fact that we allowed Donald Trump to pretend he was going to run is insulting. Herman Cain was insulting. It wasn’t the fact that he wasn’t prepared to be president that derailed his campaign, but the fact that he was involved in some sort of sexual harassment. The guy was a joke from the beginning. And that we can’t hold him to that shows me that we’ve lost any sense of reality that I know about. I can get Bachman, I get Gingrich. I may not like it but I get it. I get Ron Paul. But Santorum? No, I don’t get that. What he has said at times about gay people is beyond ignorance. It’s ignorance shadowed under the cloak of religion. After writing “I’m dreaming of a Black Xmas,” were you afraid that you’d get a bag of switches? Nah not really. It just came out in paperback actually so that’s a good thing, right. It’s actually a book about being single, disguised as a Christmas book. A lot of people get depressed around the holidays. That book is for those people.

BAH HUMBUG FUNNY MAN LEWIS BLACK HELPS MACON RING IN THE NEW YEAR

P

rolific funny man, actor, author and stand-up comedian/ranter Lewis Black will be live onstage at The Grand as part of his 'In God We Rust' tour. His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for the audience. He is a passionate performer and enraged optimist. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Lewis Black rose to national prominence through appearances on 'The Daily Show' and subsequent specials on Comedy Central. In 2001 he won the Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has also produced six comedy CD albums including the 2007 Grammy Award-winning 'The Carnegie Hall Performance.'

I know you probably get asked this at the onset of every interview, but what are you angry about today? Yeah, well uh, I tell you. I’m angry with a lot. It’s not like it gets better every day like it used to. But today, I guess, I’m angry about the fact that if we’re going nowhere as a country, how come it’s taking us so long to get there.

06 DECEMBER 15 - 30, 2011

Have you ever played Macon GA, What do you know about Macon? I have played Macon at a corporate event at a comedy club there. It must have been 15 years ago. I of course know about the music that comes out of there. I know that the Allman Brothers Band came from there. I actually saw them when they were all intact, the original, with Duane. Yeah I saw you onstage with Warren Haynes at Bonaroo a few years back. I wondered if you were a fan or if you were just there. No I’m a huge fan. I really am. Any thoughts on how your act goes over in a southern town? Do you play it any differently? Well I don’t change much, and that probably explains why ticket sales are always slow. My act becomes a little slower sometimes, because my timing is really fast or at least it used to be so I may slow down how fast I talk some. When I talk about religion I pull my foot off the throttle, but I still say the same shit. You went on a USO tour not long ago. How was that? I did three USO tours at Christmas and it was awesome.

What are some of the things you’ll be discussing at your upcoming show here? The Economy. The economy right now is really funny stuff. The Health Care System, riotous. I’ll be talking about legalizing pot, because enough is enough. I’ll also be talking about starting a new TV network where it just shows a steaming pile of shit 24 hours a day. This is mostly because I can’t get my own show. Besides touring what’s next for you? Any books or anything you’ve been working on? I’m gonna start running guns. Maybe join a motorcycle gang. No, I have a new special coming out in January 2012, called In God We Rust. It’s on a channel nobody knows called EPIX, and will also be on Comedy Central as well. How is your daily routine different from when you first started doing comedy? We do a lot more press these days. A lot of different press. When we come to town these days, we’re all over the place. Now there is all this twitter nonsense. My friend, Katherine Madigan, got me drunk and I woke up the next day and I was on twitter. It’s just harder to get people in. You’re competing with so much with everything going on. Now days, to let the people of Macon know I’m coming, I have to barrage them and hope they hear it. What are you reading or watching or listening to? I’m reading a book on the Civil War, called “1861” ,and it’s not to prepare for my trip to the South. I’ve been listening to Florence and the Machine and I’ve been watching Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Hung, and Dexter. Fantastic Finds for Everyone! Cindy Baxter is Founder and President of The 3/50 Project, LLC. What started out as a “happy accident” in 2009 spawned from a simple blog post has now changed the way many consumers shop, especially during the holiday season. The premise is quite simple. Ask yourself, “What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? Then make an effort to spend $50 in those businesses every month.

It could be as simple as a $12 bottle of wine from Winestyles, and a hip, new Kavu bag from Karats & Keepsakes ($38). The thing is, if 50% of the employed population spent $50 a month at their favorite indie stores, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. For every $100 spent in independently owned businesses, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll and other

expenditures. If you spend that same amount in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. So this holiday season, take a moment to explore all the unique items available just around the corner. The Macon Arts Gallery is hosting a trunk show, sales galore at Macon’s indie boutiques on Forsyth and Rodeo Beach is the only place in town where you can purchase a hip YOLO board (check it out below!

OP-ED City of Macon to hold community meeting in South Macon on December 15 The City of Macon Urban Redevelopment Task Force will hold a community meeting for South Macon on Thursday December 15, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Evangelical Faith Christian

Average holiday trip:

244.5 miles Happy Holidays & safe travels

Church at 4290 Houston Avenue, Macon, GA. All concerned residents and businesses are encouraged to attend. This meeting is part of a series of city-wide community meetings designed to solicit input on key issues affecting neighborhoods and ideas on how they can be improved. The Urban Redevelopment Task force was originally created in 2010 to identify areas within the City of Macon where blight, poverty and disinvestment are most prevalent. These efforts led to the adoption of the Urban Redevelopment Plan in

March of 2011.The Task force is now moving into the implementation phase of the plan. Input from the community will help guide and prioritize the implementation of redevelopment strategies in the neighborhoods identified in the Urban Redevelopment Plan (URP). Representatives from the City of Macon and partner agencies will be present. For more information, or if you are unable to attend the meeting, please submit your comments to: Gil Prado, AICP at (478) 751-7190 of Gil.Prado@Macon.GA.US.

SEEING RED

Michael Savage's Indecent Proposal to Newt Gingrich Controversial radio talk show host Michael Savage, citing several reasons why he can't defeat President Obama, has offered presidential candidate and former Speaker of The House Newt Gingrich $1 million dollars to drop his bid for the GOP nomination. Savage goes on to tell Gingrich to 'put his ego aside' and 'if he really loves the country as much as he says' to do what's right for America' and 'take the money'. BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

The problem is several of the reasons that Savage cites are just not true. According to Savage: •WHEN HE WAS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, GINGRICH FAILED TO DELIVER ON HIS SO-CALLED CONTRACT WITH AMERICA. (Granted all of the participles of the Contract With America did not get passed, but according to the Contract, "within the first 100 days of the 104th Congress, we shall bring to the House Floor the following bills, each to be given full and open debate, each to be given a clear and fair vote and each to be immediately available this day for public inspection and scrutiny." The Contract did in fact do this even though Congress shot down several of the items in the Contract and President Clinton vetoed others.) NON-ISSUE •HE MADE ADS WITH NANCY PELOSI PROMOTING THE FALSE THEORY OF GLOBAL WARMING. (Ok...He made the commercial in 2008. Number 1: In 2008 the United States was at the height of awareness about global warming. EVERYBODY was going green. Number 2: Gingrich had just written a book called "Contract With The Earth". Number 3: Like him or hate him, Gingrich always seems to have his fingers on the pulse of America. Number 4: Gingrich has now calls this event 'the dumbest single thing I've done'. There is no question at all that Gingrich and Pelosi don't like each other. Gingrich has since called Pelosi "despicable, dishonest and vicious". He and Pelosi are hardly picking out living room furniture together. As for global climate change, Gingrich sums it up on page 197 of his book, "We strongly believe that entrepreneurial environmentalism is a superior approach to bureaucratic, litigious, unrestrained

10 DECEMBER 15 - 30, 2011

regulation." And on page 191 he writes, "The development of new technologies is the best way to achieve significant reductions in carbon loading.") NON-ISSUE •HE’S IN FAVOR OF AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS. (This makes it sound like Gingrich wants to just hand over citizenship to anyone who floats in a boat from Haiti or swims the Rio Grande. On his website, Gingrich writes, "We need a system that enforces the rule of law, ensures that those who broke the law pay a stiff penalty, but also acknowledges that it is neither optimal nor feasible nor humane to deport every single illegal immigrant....We need a path to legality, but not citizenship, for some of these individuals who have deep ties to America, including family, church and community ties. We also need a path to swift but dignified repatriation for those who are transient and have no roots in America.... Applicants must first pass a criminal background check, and then the local committees will assess applications based on family and community ties, and ability to support oneself via employment without the assistance of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other entitlement programs....Once an applicant has been granted the right to obtain legal status, he or she will have to pay a penalty of at least $5,000...Moving forward, those who receive this status will have to prove on a regular basis that they can support themselves without entitlement programs and pay for health insurance or else risk the ability to stay in the United States.") Please go to Newt.org to read his entire stance on immigration. I'm trying to not knock another candidate, but in contrast Governor Romney doesn't even have an immigration proposal on his site. NON-ISSUE •HE’S TAKEN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC, TWO OF THE MOST CORRUPT FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

IN HISTORY. (While it is true he did accept money from both institutions, Governor Romney has the same type of skeletons in his closet. When confronted about it on the campaign trail yesterday Gingrich shot back, "If Governor Romney would like to give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain, then I would be glad to then listen to him. And I will bet you $10, not $10,000, that he won’t take the offer.”) POSSIBLE ISSUE but equal with Romney and still light years behind Obama's real estate deal with Tony Rezko. •HE’S CHEATED ON TWO WIVES AND LEFT BOTH OF THEM WHILE THEY WERE BOTH SERIOUSLY ILL, WHICH WILL DESTROY HIS CHANCES AMONG FEMALE VOTERS. (The story regarding the first wife is completely false as Gingrich’s daughter Jackie has denied that her father did anything wrong and that her mother wanted their divorce. Further the first Mrs. Gingrich is alive and well as she was only having a benign tumor removed when Gingrich was discussing their divorce in the hospital. As for the events surrounding Gingrich's second wife it is true he left her for his current wife.) POSSIBLE ISSUE but everyone has a private life. See my previous columns about what I think of the medias’ scrutiny of candidates. •HE CALLED THE REPUBLICAN PLAN TO REFORM MEDICARE “RIGHT WING SOCIAL ENGINEERING.” (Since he uttered this, Gingrich backed off significantly. He personally called Congressman Ryan and apologized for making the comment.) Possible Issue but Romneycare will be a much bigger albatross. WeArePolitics contributor Holly Robichaud, a resident of Massachusetts and writer for the Boston Globe wrote in April, ..."no party commemorating the day or liberal praise from Deval Patrick is needed to derail former Gov. Mitt

Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. (Writing about the celebration Patrick had on the 5th anniversary of the signing of Romneycare.) The damage was done five years ago when Mitt orchestrated the bill-signing photo-op for the Massachusetts health-care mandate with the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy and then-House Speaker Sal DiMasi, who’s now facing a federal trial on bribery charges."

•IN A PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AGAINST OBAMA, REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL HE DOES, ON TELEVISION, HE WILL COME OFF BADLY COMPARED TO OBAMA AND LOOK LIKE NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT HE IS: A FAT, OLD, WHITE MAN. And that folks should sum up the credibility that Michael Savage has. There is no doubt that President Obama comes off looking very sharp on television, but to blatantly say that Speaker Gingrich is an "fat, old, white man" is as racist and degrading as now Vice-President Biden’s remarks that Obama was "clean". NON ISSUE

I hate to break it to Mr. Savage, but the American people could care less what the GOP candidate actually looks like. They do, however, care about what that candidate can do to get this country back on track. Any of the GOP candidates make Obama look like a wall-flower on that front. Oh yeah...keep in mind that Michael Savage endorsed Jerry Brown for Governor of California over Republican Meg Whitman. He's hardly a stalwart of Conservatism. Another talk show host Mark Levin has offered Michael Savage $10,000 to quit radio. In your own words Savage, take the money and run. Oh yeah, and if you haven’t figured it out since Herman Cain has left the presidential race for good, I am endorsing Georgia’s other favorite son former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

I

began working in political campaigns when I was in high school and I’m now a battle-scarred veteran of many on the national, state, and local levels. In all those years, I’ve never encountered a better tactician and vote-counter than Robert Brown. When I first met him, he was leading a successful effort to save the Douglass Theatre, having already saved two historic school buildings when he was an elected member of the school board. As an arts advocate and a student of history, I was impressed by his actions and we became friends – or as much a friend as Robert would allow. He was always reserved and held his cards close to his vest, a trait which caused some to regard him as aloof. The truth was, if he had something to say, he would shout it from the rooftops (just ask Edwina Barnes how he signed on to her animal protection campaign when no other elected official thought it worthy of time and effort). But most of the time, he learned far more by listening not only to words but to inflections and nuances that many others would have missed. Perhaps it was a trait he mastered while he was a member of one of Mercer University’s first integrated classes. On election day at 7:00 a.m. he was at a table laden with telephones and, except for quick bathroom visits, he never left it until the polls closed that evening. I’ve watched him call a poll watcher mid-day to learn voter turnout in a particular precinct then, hearing the response, immediately order reinforce-

ments to knock on doors and drive voters to their precinct. To this day I don’t know how he knew who and when to call but it always worked. At least it worked until his most recent humiliating loss in the mayor’s primary race. By that point his bag of magic tricks was depleted. When Robert’s health took such a public decline a few years ago (his walk was noticeably affected), everyone wanted to know the cause. The closest he would come to an answer was that it was “a little stomach problem but I’m fine.” That was never enough to stop the whispers of those who thought they had some kind of personal right to know his most intimate secrets. Those vicious souls seem to think elected officials are insensitive to callous and hurtful comments. On the day after Robert’s death, a reader posted on the Telegraph’s comments page about the story a fervent wish that two other named elected officials should follow Robert’s example. The comment was allowed to remain online for everyone to see. In light of Robert Brown’s suicide and that of Warner Robins Mayor Donald Walker, can’t journalists and media hosts at least agree to be civil when discussing elected officials and not stoop to personal attacks and invective remarks? Perhaps their readers and listeners would follow their example. As Abraham Lincoln taught us, “He has the right to criticize who has a heart to help.” Most of these naysayers have no intention of helping and some appear to have hardened their hearts long ago. Some have said that Robert’s death was attributable to his financial challenges and

money owed, citing the expense of his most recent mayoral campaign. I don’t know anyone in the real estate business whose income hasn’t been negatively affected by the economy, and Robert’s last financial disclosure for his mayoral campaign shows a bit more than $10,000 still on hand. The truth is that his colon cancer was back. It almost killed him the last time and he still wore a colostomy bag from that experience. He was told only recently that the cancer had returned and there were few treatment options left. I was assured by someone very close to Robert that the medicine he was taking clearly warned that it could cause depression and suicidal tendencies.

Macon’s interests were better known in Atlanta than they were here (when the state proposed building a highway directly through my neighborhood, it was Robert who stopped it in its tracks). In a state senate full of powerful and effective legislators with super-sized egos, his peers elected him as Majority Leader then kept him as Minority Leader when the Senate changed hands. Unlike other politicians, it wasn’t in his nature to boast of his accomplishments. Perhaps if he had, the results in Macon’s mayoral primary would have been different. As for my friend Robert Brown, I wish for him the peace he could not find in those last dark hours when he must have felt all

I was told the night of Robert’s death that I had made a great error in endorsing him for mayor. The truth is that, while I was mistaken about the likelihood of his victory, I don’t regret my endorsement for a moment. Robert’s many successes in looking after

alone. I cannot imagine the utter despair that led him to such an end, but I do know he deserved much better. As the Old Testament teaches us in Isaiah 57:2, Let peace come, let him rest in his bed that hath walked in his uprightness.

A life-long Maconite and graduate of Tattnall Square Academy, Lisa remembers strolling downtown and being able to glimpse superstars at every other corner. You worked for the Cherry Blossom Festival before coming here right? I did. I was the events coordinator for the Cherry Blossom Festival, which included the Street Party. A tornado kind of ruined that this year, but we did have some good talent lined up so it was a lot of fun putting together. How you liking it so far? This is a fantastic opportunity. I was very fortunate. I’d be remiss not to mention those that were here before me. Peggy did a great job overseeing the renovations as well as Greg Potter and EJ is a walking book of knowledge on the ABB. I walked into a great spot, because of those people who did some fantastic work ahead of me.

NEWLY REMODELED inside and out

What’s your main goal at the museum? Fundraising is obviously a big goal. We rely heavily on donors to keep our doors open. So we depend on Citizens in Macon, as well as citizens throughout the country and the world to help us keep this thing going. What’s your favorite item in the museum? It sounds a little weird, but probably one of the tables from H&H from back in the day when the Brothers used to eat

there every day. It just represents the community that their music help inspire. I mean they would have starved if it weren’t for Mama. And to have that table in here, just makes me smile. Do you see that type of community in Macon Music today? Yes and No. Being from here I remember when the brothers were here walking around downtown. It wasn’t uncommon to see big stars just walking around. And you still see a strong support for our local music. And we’ve progressed with Hip-Hop and Country, though back then it was primarily Southern Rock. In that sense it’s better, even more diverse. Are we the Mecca that we were back then? No. But can we get there again? Absolutely. Where do you see the Museum in 10 years? I want this to be sort of a miniGraceland. A real destination for music fans around the world. I was just talking to QuickBooks customer support. This guy was in the Philippines, and he was a huge Allman Brothers fan. People all over the world feel that way. I really think it has the potential to be a crown jewel of Macon.

Heartcake Party from Summerville, GA have been playing in Atlanta and the Southeast for two years, and have already made a profound impact on the “Metalcore” scene. Casey Smith, Zach Pledger, Blake Sprayberry, Jeremy Muse, and Marc DiGregorio banded together from previous local acts in 2008, and have built up a considerable following with their catchy, aggressive, emotional, melodic, and pounding “HeartCore” tracks. Recently, Heartcake Party toured for a month with Goatee Records act I Am Terrified, playing shows all over the States. The boys also joined the last leg of the “Tours and Rumors of Tours” tour, featuring The Chariot, and played the Ernie Ball Stage at this year’s Warped Tour.

If all you want for Christmas is two hot babes (who can sing), then tonight Santa rocks. Voted Macon’s favorite singer/songwriter, Abby Owens Band will open for Athens own Betsy Franck. Franck is a sultry talent whose sound is funky blues rock with a southern country tinge. In January 2003, Betsy and the BKB went into John Keane's Studio (R.E.M., Indigo Girls, Widespread Panic) and recorded an electrified seven song album, Held Up By Progress, which was met with great reviews from local music media.

Trendlenberg @ The Rookery

FRI, DEC 16

The Skeeterz @ 20’s Pub Lead Vocalist Dawn Palmer has been a singer all her life, but completed classical training in college. Before joining the Skeeterz in 2007, she toured the Southeast extensively with The Backyard Band and The Buttercats. They play a variety of originals and covers that you will enjoy.

Trendlenberg @ The Rookery Cutway writes hushed, subtle songs that provide lush illustrations of the world with a sense of wonder and humor. Cutway’s lyrics are filled with imagery taken from nature and sentiments borrowed from simpler times. His songs bypass the common singer/songwriter habit of naked introspection. The songs are personal, yes, but a far cry from the girl, drugs, and heartbreak route favored by his peers. The music Cutway adds to these lyrics can range from a few notes gently plucked on nylon strings with sparse arrangements of found sounds to a full on guitar rock explosion powered by multiple riffs and thunderous rhythms. At the Rookery This night, he’s going to be going with the Thunderous Rhythms so pay attention. Seriously, he’s been our favorite songwriter in Macon for years.

Radio Cult and Ugly Christmas sweater party @ Wild Wing Café Since 2005, Radio Cult has performed over 750 shows including conventions, casinos, weddings, fraternity parties, corporate events and festivals as well as in bars, concert halls and other music venues from their hometown of Atlanta, GA all the way to Los Angeles, CA and London, UK. $100 cash prize to winner of ugliest Christmas sweater too!

Radio Cult @ Wild Wing

Shane Bridges Band @ The Hummingbird Shane Bridges is a SInger/Songwriter from right here Macon. His music blends the good side of country with the rootsy side of rock to create solid songs crafted with strong lyrics. He has landed his songs on both tv & film shows. He tours the southeast with his band of veteran musicians. We know him best from his early project Acoustic Workshop but his solo shows are something to behold. He just recorded a new album in Nashville and big things are expected of this guy. Don’t miss this show.

SAT, DEC 17

Mike Kinnebrew @ Cox Capitol Theatre Put simply: Mike Kinnebrew is good. Very good! As a music critic, I spend countless hours being bombarded by the stereotypical

Tokyo Spa @ The Hummingbird Tokyo Spa is a group of seasoned musicians playing an eclectic mix of rock cover songs covering the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and NOW. Everything from Peter Gabriel to 311, Billy Idol to U2, Pink Floyd to The White Stripes!! They're a great party band; and a happy ending is guaranteed!

Josh Carson @ The Shamrock

TUES, DEC 20

John Stanley Band @ Backporch Lounge Everybody knows Stan the Drummer Man from around town. You know, Tony Tyler's dad. You know that guy that played with The Bobby Whitlock Band, The Brooks Brothers, Moondawg, Midnight Bluez, Cosmic Groove, Soulshine, and The Tony Tyler Trance. Everybody has witnessed his feats of singing, playing the drums, entertaining the audience, and reading the set list all at the same time. Everybody knows this guy can jam. Well, get ready for his next project The John Stanley Band. If you are looking for a cool blend of blues, classic rock, southern rock, and originals, the John Stanley Band will treat you to a multitude of styles.

FRI, DEC 23

Josh Carson @ The Shamrock Half of Macon band Acoustic Workship, Carson has been doing his great solo gig for some time now. Playing a mix of covers and originals, he’s a great picker a good singer and a great songwriter. Hard to go wrong with this hometown favorite.

SCENE LISTEN UP TO MIKE KINNEBREW

Your current album "Between the Living and the Dying" is available at Golden Bough books here in Macon, tell us about the album? Yes, it is! Thanks to GB for hosting it - it's also available on iTunes and Amazon. I recorded the song at the Smoakstack and Wide studios in East Nashville with Andy Hunt. It was amazing to have musicians who play with some of my favorite artists (Dave Barnes, Matt Kearney, etc.) coming in to play on my record! The songs are autobiographical. In songwriting, I'm honestly just trying to make sense of my life. Hopefully that helps others make a little sense of their own lives as well. In that way, I hope it reminds us that we're all in this thing together. Favorite song? "Better Than Me." It's a song I wrote for Emma James (my daughter) before she was born. Georgia musicians are taking over the radio airwaves and seem to be giving each other a helping hand. Sugarland asks Zac Brown to tour, he makes it. Jason Aldean gets Luke Bryan on tour, Brown touring with one of our faves Sonia Leigh this summer, etc... Who would you love to tour with? Georgia is definitely making it's mark on music, and has been for some time. These days, a lot of GA artists are making a good run in the Country Music Market. 10 years ago it was John Mayer redefin-

What our readers are listening to

In 2007, Sujjan Stevens hosted a "Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange"

Dear Readers, what is your favorite Christmas album or song? Clark Bush recommends James Brown, John Ford Hamner likes Paul McCartney’s “Flaming Pie,” Traci Burns is digging Sufjan Stevens “Songs for Christmas”, Debbie Askew likes the Carpenters, Sarah Gerwig rocks around the Christmas tree to The Temptations “Give Love at Christmas” and Mason Aultman recommends Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper.”

For more information and to hear his music: mikekinnebrew.com ing the singer/ songwriter. 15 years ago it was the Indigo Girls, and 20 years ago you had the B-52's and REM making a run at Rock/Pop. You can go back as far as you'd like to, GA has been well-represented for sure. As for me, I'd love to tour with John or with Sugarland. We all came up playing at Eddie's Attic together and they're actually really nice people. I'd be happy to ride in on their coat-tails! How have you personally seen the ATL music scene change over the last few years? I would say there are a lot more white boys with acoustic guitars now than there where when I first started. Which makes finding your niche and standing out a bit more difficult, but it also raises the bar. I'd also say people are a lot more picky (or intentional) about the shows they attend. I don't think that is the ATL music scene so much as it is the economy and people generally being more mindful of how they spend their money. Name a song you've listened to in the past 24 hours? Honestly? Fine. "Where are You Christmas" from the movie, "The Grinch." as sung by Cindy-Lou Who I'm watching it w/ my 20 month old girl...and...I like it too! Whose band t-shirt do you wear proudly? Josh Ritter. Amazing lyricist. Who would we be surprised to learn is in your music collection? Lionel Richie Recommend a band our readers must hear now? Darrell Scott. Darrell has written many country songs that people know ("Great Day to Be Alive" by Travis Tritt, "Long Time Gone" by Dixie Chicks, etc.) But I have never seen someone that can write, sing, and play (Lord, can he play!) like Darrell Scott. Do yourself a favor and check him out. LIVE is the best listening experience and he plays in GA a couple times a year. You can also get him on iTunes or at darrellscott.com Seems you'll be making 3 appearances next week in Macon. What is your favorite indie restaurant or landmark? My favorite restaurants in Macon are Fountain of Juice and Natalia's. I love the food, and the people there treat you like family, which i appreciate as much as the food. My favorite Macon landmarks are the Riverwalk (great place for a run!) and The Capitol Theatre where I'll be performing my Christmas concert Saturday night!

NIGHTLIFE | the city’s best bets when the sun goes down

URBAN EXPLORER

What you should be getting into... Vote for Readers’ Choice nominees, ATL rockers Heartcake Party at the 567, New Year’s Eve happenings around the state and so much more BY SEAN PRITCHARD

W

ith only one last column to write in 2011, I'd like to first take the opportunity to extend thanks to the group of people that have worked so hard that past 12 months to continue to make this city a comfortable place to be, despite any statistics that may have been published about our town. Macon will not be changing overnight, at least any time soon. The sooner that we understand that and combine our efforts, the better we will be. So, to Brad & Meagan Evans, Gateway Macon, NewTown, Keith Watson, New City & The 567 Center, everyone involved with Cherry Blossom, Bragg Jam, the Film Festival and all the other citywide events, Main Street Macon, Macon Noise, all of the local business owners, operators, and staff, The 11th Hour Staff, College Corridor, our cities employee's, and most importantly, all of you who want the best for Macon, whether you live Downtown or North Macon, whether you read this paper or strictly the AJC, as long as you're doing what you can to improve your life and your neighbor's than you're alright by me. No one agrees on everything and they never will, but we owe it to one another to at least hear our respective opinions out before we make assumptions or criticize each other. If I forgot to mention you, please excuse me. I'm still coming down from anesthesia, but I mean every word. Now to what you actually read this article for… This Friday (16th), Justin Cutway brings his project Trendlenberg to The Rookery for both an acoustic opening set followed by a full band. Justin is a talented

songwriter who occasionally tosses in covers from both American classics and from local artists as well. It's sure to be a good time and you can show up early and get one of the Rookery's signature burgers. Speaking of burgers and live music, The 11th Hour Reader's Choice Award nominations are now online so head over to either the 11th Hour Facebook or their website and nominate the things you love about Macon. Categories range from "Hottest Wait Staff" to "Favorite Street Personality". The event is always an amazing time with big surprises each year. The next night (Saturday 17th) brings what promises to be the biggest hardcore show of the year to Macon's Downtown. Atlanta, Georgia based group Heartcake Party bring their rapid-hitting, sample based melodic hardcore to The 567 Center, alongside Warner Robins bands Death Came For The Archbishop and Alert The Messenger, plus two other out of town bands. Heartcake Party hasn't played Macon since the Summer of 2009 and they we're a hit then. Things have only improved for them since, so I'm looking forward to the crowd that they'll bring out. To keep things rolling, Xavii and brother-band Tanosweg are bringing their progressive noise to Warner Robins for a free show at The Hanger on Tuesday the 20th. I have never, ever been to a show in Warner Robins, so this might be an opportunity I should take advantage of. I also hear that they've opened up a new venue down their called Rock Bottom and that it's worth checking out. The very next night is a show that I've been looking forward to for quite some time. The deal was sealed for me when I was sitting at The Hummingbird one night and Al King was sitting down with a ring of drinks around him playing Goldeneye for N64 on his Droid. That alone was reason for me to get behind his work (not to mention he's one hell of an artist). King, Te Treebay (Jowin & Sabir), Elhae and a variety of artists dubbed under King's performance moniker "Universal Kingdom" will be taking the stage for what might be the only hiphop showcase Macon has seen this year. Best part of all, these cool cats want you to come hang out and save your money so they've made it a FREE show. You can't beat that. This all goes down at The 567 Gallery Stage. Make sure you get your Christmas shopping done before everyone gets crazy with consumer fury ("men be all like zombies at the mall when women be shopping.."). Try your best to do your shopping at locally owned businesses. I promise that it's possible to get just about all of your Christmas needs taken care of at places throughout the city. Yes, it does require you to drive a bit and you don't get to spend all day making your wish lists on Amazon, J Crew, or Urban Outfitters, but you do get to have the interaction with people that are very well your neighbors. They'll appreciate it much more, you'll hopefully feel good about supporting your community.. A win/win sort of thing. And now, for a list of happenings on my favorite day of the year. There's some amazing shows going on all around Georgia this New Years Eve, but no matter where you spend your evening, it's sure to be a party. • B.B. KING @ The Macon City Auditorium • The Cherry Blossom Festival Ball Drop @ Terminal Station (Macon) • Cake @ Fox Theatre (Atlanta) • The Constellations @ Smith's Old Bar (Atlanta) • The Whigs @ 40 Watt (Athens) • Noot d' Noot @ Star Bar (Atlanta) • Perpetual Groove @ Center Stage (Atlanta) • Peach Drop Celebration @ Underground Atlanta • Reptar @ Georgia Theatre (Athens) 2011 has been an eventful year. We've improved on what we needed to from the last few years and we're now aware of what we can do better the next 366 days. Remember to make your resolutions, stick with them, and stock up on black-eye pea's and collard greens. After all, we are in Macon.

I

only met former state Senator Robert Brown a couple of times. We never had any real conversation. I never could tell if he knew me, and frankly I figured if he did, he probably didn’t like me much. After all, his friend and supporter was my political opponent in the July primary, and things had gotten bitter. On Thursday, December 8, I found myself—like many Maconites—remembering that there are so many things that matter more than politics. I hate to admit this, but that understanding came on like an epiphany, perhaps because politics have polarized us so much (on every level) that mudslinging has become the de facto language of our exchanges. Though I never said much more than hello to Senator Brown, I didn’t think twice to gloat about his defeat in the primary for mayor. I’m ashamed of myself for it, and further, I’m ashamed it took this to wake me up. I may have avoided slander—never stooping so low as to call him names or anything—but I took too much joy in his loss. I did the same thing, repeatedly, with former state Representative David Lucas. Maybe I was bitter about my own defeat or maybe I regressed to childhood where such taunts are supposed to stay. Regardless, it was wrong and I regret it.

It is hypocritical of me to decry the venomous nature of our present political situation and then contribute to it myself. An eye for an eye makes the world blind. The greatest disservice, however, is that it represents my failure to recognize what Senator Brown has done for our community. The evidence of his service is not hard to find, and if there is anything good to come of his passing, it is that his work has been brought to the forefront. There is one thing he did that may be overlooked for a long time because its impact is still being felt. If we achieve consolidation of Macon and Bibb County, Senator Brown will have helped make that happen. I can freely admit that I did not always appreciate the positions he took or the way he tried to enforce his will, and during last year’s drive closer to consolidation, I often thought he was an obstructionist. But what has become clear since both his proposal and state Representative Allen Peake’s proposal failed is that whether intentionally or not, Senator Brown created a long-needed community dialogue about what we want to see happen. My belief on this goes beyond simply agreeing with some parts (having a police chief) and disagreeing with others (continuing to have partisan elections). It comes out of the fact that for all the talk about consolidation, this community has rarely— if ever—had enough tangibles to actually discuss the matter intelligently. That process began with the counter proposal Senator Brown and Senator Cecil Staton made through their compromise, which

itself was somewhat surprising but also telling of the late senator’s strengths. That, though, was just the seed. This year we’ve seen it blossom in the hands of our largely new Bibb County Delegation, who have carried on the service that Senator Brown made his trademark. In the wake of last year’s efforts, we have seen the local delegation host community forums to get feedback from residents and to share information that clarifies the process and some of the particulars. We’ve seen the same bipartisan efforts that typified the work Senators Brown and Staton did for consolidation continued both behind closed doors and out in the public eye. We’ve seen our fragmented community come together in surprising ways, like the group of local business leaders—half black and half white—who have weighed in with their recommendations for consolidation. At the end of the day, you don’t have to agree with Robert Brown’s message, his politics or his method, but you should give him the respect he is due. There are tons of personal stories that tell the little things he did for people and their families. There are stacks of news clippings that recall the bills he sponsored and causes he championed. But as we stand here now looking back, the measure of this man is evident in how many lives he continues to effect.

Is there anything Republicans and Democrats can agree on? A: I’m really starting to doubt it, and if they keep that up, the one thing most Americans will find themselves agreeing

about is that it’s a waste of time and money to vote with either the Republican or Democratic Party. Here’s a golden opportunity to fix that: Criminal Justice reform. The state of Georgia is examining a serious and longneeded reform of our criminal justice system. And it’s being led by Republicans, including Governor Nathan Deal whose son is a judge that has been quite vocal about the need. Let me say that again: conservatives are advocating alternative sentencing, new sentencing guidelines for drug offenders and giving judges more discretion instead of tying their hands with mandatory minimum sentencing. Today, one in every 70 adults in Georgia is under state supervision, and as a result, the state budget for “corrections” is about $1 billion annually. We incarcerate at a clip higher than all but three other states. And the reason why? Democrats in the 1990’s, led by then-Governor Zell Miller (and helped by Democrats like our nowMayor, then-Representative Robert Reichert), ushered in an era of “getting tough on crime” that included the twostrikes laws and imprisonment without the possibility of parole that have filled our prisons and is starting to return many felons back to the streets without supervision or assistance. What have we gotten for that? Our recidivism rate hasn’t changed a bit so people are still getting out of prison and committing crimes and going back. There has to be a better way and I’m crossing my fingers the state’s Republicans and Democrats can agree on that.

In the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame. For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
