PUBLISHER’S NOTES by BRAD EVANS

brad@11thHourOnline.com

hanksgiving has become a pretty strange time around my house. Most of you know by now that my dad has Alzheimer’s, and though I’m not the only person dealing with this by any means, it’s still a really strange road to have to walk down. All the vitality that I used to be so proud to link to him is gone, replaced with confusion, and as we sit around the table and I see he forgot to get cornbread, I mean I really think hell must be freezing over. I’m really lucky to have two brothers that I’ve been best friends with my whole life. Really lucky to have an understanding mother, but as we get older, and mortality punches us in the gut more and more, I realize that paying attention to what you got, is really the only thing that matters. I stayed up with some friends of mine from Dooly County cooking 2900 chickens for the needy almost all of Wednesday night, and standing around a burn barrel and hearing them tell stories, made me

realize why I am how I am. I left when I was 18 years old, but most of it has never left me. How I got stuck writing stories and not driving a tractor is really something I’ll never understand. I also want to offer congratulations to one of my oldest friends. Someone who I’ve kept in touch with since I was two years old. Tracer Gramm. That really tall bald headed guy you sometimes see me walking around with was my next-door neighbor growing up. He left for the Navy when I left for the west. We used to write letters to each other before we could afford cell phones. He has been, and will always be my link to my friends back home. That part of Dooly County that will forever live inside me. He had his first son this week, DEGS, and he had it with a Maconite, Ms. Lauren Summers Hodges Gramm. It was good to hold that little munchkin, though I doubt he’ll stay that way. Congratulations you guys.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

Next week, The Roots will be releasing their 13th album, undun, but now you can listen to the album before it hits stores.NPR is currently streaming undun, which features a variety of guest artists, from Big K.R.I.T. to Sufjan Stevens, whose song “Redford” greatly influenced the album, which features a four-part movement based on the song. Leslie Feist is collaborating with Mastadon. How cool is that? Tinariwen and TV on the Radio is playing the Colbert Report and Jimmy Cliff is stopping by Jimmy Fallon. Bad Ass alert. Hell on Wheels recently aired on AMC. Hell on Wheels is a contemporary Western that centers on former Confederate soldier

Cullen Bohannon, portrayed by Anson Mount, whose quest for vengeance has led him to the Union Pacific Railroad's westward construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Along with the Walking Dead, AMC is stepping up their game up. And with Sons of Anarchy on FX coming to a close this season, I know what station I’ll be tuning in to. On the big screen, Tom Rothman, the co-chairman of Fox Entertainment, has stated that the company plans on making sequels to two

of this year’s biggest hits, X-Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Rothman said that before they go to work on the pair of sequels, they have to find scripts worthy of following up these two reboots. I’ve also heard that a new Mad Max trilogy is on the way. I’m a little dubious, but I do love apocalyptic movies. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Hanks's production company Playtone, alongside Universal, has optioned the film rights to author Erik Larson's historical nonfiction novel In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, to be produced under Playtone This was a book I enjoyed immensely, so I’m looking forward to it.

Your Holiday Itinerary Made Simple

I

t's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Macon, Georgia. The annual lighting of the Bibb County Board of Education Christmas Tree was December 1. About 250 students sang Christmas Carols and Mayor Reichert and Commissioner Sam Hart had the honor of lighting the tree. If you didn't make it out for the lighting there are still a ton of great ways to celebrate the holidays in Macon. On Friday, December 2, celebrate Friday Fest with a presentation of "The Polar Express" at 6:30 p.m. at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, sponsored by The Hummingbird. Then enjoy Christmas Open House events, dinner specials and more at local businesses and restaurants in downtown Macon. Before or after the movie, make sure to check out the First Friday Gallery Hop with exhibitions at several local venues, all free and open to the public. The evening starts with "Believe" at The Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance, which features handmade art at affordable prices, fit for the season. If you're looking for a one- of-a-kind gift from someone special, stop by The Gallery from 5-8 p.m. Once you've found that perfect gift, head down to Cherry Street where The 567 Center for Renewal is hosting Macon State College's "Fall 2011 Student Art Exhibition." This exhibit will feature drawings and multi-media works by students of Macon State. The opening reception will be from 6-9 p.m. This is a great chance to meet up-and-coming artists and enjoy live music by Classical Guitarist Terry Cantwell. After taking in the soothing sounds of classical guitar, head down to the corner of Mulberry and Second Street to the Contemporary Arts Exchange. It's one of Macon's many hidden gems, located above Michael's on Mulberry. Look for the single door marked "Arts Exchange," climb the first flight of stairs and you'll enter the magical world of working artist’s studios. The arts exchange opens its doors around 7 p.m. and runs late. After glimpsing into the minds of the artists of the CAE, stroll over to Roasted Cafe & Lounge for "Funky First Friday" featuring art by William Dantzler and a funk & soul DJ set by Roger Riddle. While you are there, try Roasted's famous "Date Shake." I've had one, and I promise, you won't be disappointed. This funky and fun event lasts from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and there is no cover. Continue getting into the Christmas spirit on Sunday, December 4 at the Middle Georgia Christmas Parade, happening at 3 p.m. in downtown Macon. This community parade will feature marching bands, floats and a special guest

06 DECEMBER 1- 16, 2011

from the North Pole. Arrive downtown early and enjoy lunch in one of our many fantastic restaurants before the parade. Of course, nothing says, “Christmas in Middle Georgia” quite like the annual performance of “The Nutcracker” at The Grand Opera House presented by Nutcracker of Middle Georgia. I’ve already got my tickets, and you may want to hurry if you want to get yours. Performance days for this annual production of the classic ballet are December 7-11 with 7:30 p.m. performances Wed.-Sat. and 2:30 p.m. performances on Sat. & Sun. Local theatres are also getting into the holiday spirit with special performances geared to the “Season of Giving.” Don’t miss “A Douglass Christmas Card” at The Douglass Theatre Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.; Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas: The Musical” at Theatre Macon Dec. 2-10; “A 1940s Radio Hour” at Macon Little Theatre Dec. 2-11; or “Miracle on 34th Street” at The Grand Opera House December 19. The spreading of Christmas cheer doesn’t stop at the local theatres. Local museums and historical sites are also gearing up their holiday offerings. The Museum of Arts and Sciences hosts “Celebrate!” an exhibition of holiday celebrations from cultures around the world. These include vignettes reflecting several Christmas traditions, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the Chinese New Year. Other offerings include: Christmas Luncheons at Hay House Dec. 7- 9; “Christmas in Dixie” at Cannonball House Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.; Children’s Sugar Plum Parties at Hay House Dec. 4 & 11; and Christmas tours at Hay House available through December 31. By the way, if you are looking for something that is both timeless and spiritually-fulfilling, you may be want to check out the Choral Society of Middle Georgia’s annual concert of Handel’s “Messiah” on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Not only is the music beautiful, but the setting is too. Last, but certainly never least, The Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance is hosting special Trunk Shows on December 9, 16 and 23 featuring an abundance of handmade art, including metal and ceramic jewelry, pottery, blown glass and much more. The Gallery is open for extended hours through Christmas: Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sat. 11-3 p.m.

NUTCRACKER OF MIDDLE GEORGIA, DECEMBER 7 - 11 GRAND OPERA HOUSE It began as the dream of one woman, Jean Evans Weaver, a Macon dance instructor who envisioned an annual local production of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet that would rival those presented by the country's premier city ballet companies. The dream quickly caught fire, and since its humble beginnings in 1985, has ignited the spirits of thousands of volunteers, contributors, and performers who, together, have created Nutcracker of Middle Georgia, Inc. Fantastic Finds for Everyone! Cindy Baxter is Founder and President of The 3/50 Project, LLC. What started out as a “happy accident” in 2009 spawned from a simple blog post has now changed the way many consumers shop, especially during the holiday season. The premise is quite simple. Ask yourself, “What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? Then make an effort to spend $50 in those businesses every month.

It could be as simple as a $12 bottle of wine from Winestyles, and a hip, new Kavu bag from Karats & Keepsakes ($38). The thing is, if 50% of the employed population spent $50 a month at their favorite indie stores, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. For every $100 spent in independently owned businesses, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll and other

expenditures. If you spend that same amount in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. So this holiday season, take a moment to explore all the unique items available just around the corner. The Macon Arts Gallery is hosting a trunk show, sales galore at Macon’s indie boutiques on Forsyth and Rodeo Beach is the only place in town where you can purchase a hip YOLO board (check it out below!

We want to see your 3/50 purchases! Send us a pic of your purchased items with a quick description of what you bought and where - for a chance to win a rockin’ stocking filled with local gift certificates. Give the gift of the world’s fastest growing watersport/recreational activity: Stand-up Paddleboarding. Yolo-ing is also one of the most exciting new core fitness exercises for all ages.

OP-ED A re-envisioned Second Street.

The plan envisions a revitalization of downtown beginning with the Mercer University exit off I-75 continuing through downtown and across the Second Street Bridge across I-16. The plan focuses on linking major features in and around downtown including Mercer University, The Medical Center of Central Georgia, the downtown business district, the Macon Coliseum and Macon Marriott Hotel across to the Ocmulgee River.

CITY SCENE

SPLOST Priorities RICK HUTTO Macon City Councilman and published author

N

ow that the voters of Macon and Bibb County have overwhelmingly passed the new SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), what happens next? Although the list of projects to be funded by the extra penny was explicitly listed on the ballot and nothing additional can be added to it, the order in which those projects will be funded is not decided. In fact, in some prior SPLOSTS, revenue ran out before all the projects were tackled. One SPLOST from the late 1970’s promised to pave all residential streets within the City, yet three in east Macon were not paved until last year and only then from the City’s general fund and at the insistence of the Ward One Council members. The County Commissioners have met to express their preference for the order of projects but, although the Mayor has summoned each of us to his office to express his first priority, to date Council has not met for that purpose. For the most pressing items, bonds will be issued so that funds are immediately available. Just like paying a house mortgage, however, those bonds will require us to pay interest and thus reduce the amounts available for expenditure. For example, if we issue forty million dollars in bonds, we might repay approximately forty two million dollars, thus reducing by two million the amount we have on hand to spend for remaining projects.

12 DECEMBER 1- 16, 2011

Obviously as the revenue begins coming in next April, it will be used to pay off those bonds. I firmly believe we must do two things. First, we must reassure the voters that we were honest in asking them to vote for the SPLOST by appointing a bi-partisan, bi-racial committee to advise and oversee expenditures. The voters must confirm that we are telling the truth about their money. Second, we should only borrow funds up-front for truly crucial projects. As much as I would like to see funds immediately made available for Rose Hill Cemetery and new recreation centers, I think those projects must be deferred until we have first reduced our present indebtedness and only then proceed to the two items that simply cannot wait – our radio system that enables police and fire officials to be in instant contact with their backup at headquarters (our current system is being held together with duct tape and hope) and the city’s storm drainage system that quite literally threatens to open huge gaping holes in the ground that could easily swallow a car or, God forbid, a school bus. As much as I love some of the other projects on the approved SPLOST list, I cannot in good conscience agree to borrowing money to move them up higher in the spending process. One of those projects is, however, particularly exciting. We recently were given a briefing on the Mayor’s proposed Second Street Corridor project. The winning bid chosen to oversee the suggested collaboration is

an Atlanta-based company, CHA Consulting. Although it was the highest bid of the five finalists, I was at least pleased to see that the consortium includes three respected local sub-contractors, Russell Claxton Architects, ZT3 Placemaker Studio, and Hulsey, McCormick & Wallace. Ten individuals – three from the City, three from NewTown, and one each from Planning & Zoning, Macon Transit Authority, Urban Development Authority, and the Regional Commission - ranked the three finalists and chose CHA.

unconfirmed rumors that their current topof-the-line Hilton Garden Inn may have some possible competitors coming to share that location. Connecting all Mercer’s vibrant people-mass with the 24-hour activity of the Medical Center then continuing into downtown Macon just makes commercial sense. Now that the development of Beall’s Hill and Huguenin Heights has been so successful and even more living lofts are being planned for downtown, we may finally see in Macon some of that long-anticipated synergy that we’ve all experienced in

One of the SPLOST projects is, however, particularly exciting. We recently were given a briefing on the Mayor’s proposed Second Street Corridor project. The plan envisions a revitalization of downtown beginning at the Mercer University Boulevard exit off I-75 continuing through downtown and across the Second Street bridge across I-16 emptying into east Macon linking up with the Centreplex, Coliseum Hospital, and our already-successful Marriott hotel. I’ve pointed out that the single most heavily-trafficked intersection in Bibb County is Gray Highway and Shurling Drive, so allowances must be made to prepare for the influx of the proposed (but welcomed!) extra cars and trucks. With all of the exciting development Mercer is attracting to its end of the city, including its recently-opened commercial spaces just off Tattnall Square and its soonto-be-built football stadium, there are

Savannah and other vibrant cities. The eight million dollars apportioned to the Second Street project from the current SPLOST will not be sufficient to ensure that everything that is envisioned is actually completed. In fact, the initial consulting contract for the first phase alone is just under a half-million dollars without turning a shovel. I am confident that this infusion of public investment will reap large returns from the private sector and I look forward to its success. The moment we have paid down our debt and made sure that no police officer will ever again find himself or herself at a crime scene without being able to radio for backup, I will be first in line to sign on to such an exciting undertaking.

SEEING RED

Mitt Romney's 'Dark' Past: Tobacco and Beer Before you get the idea that this will be an article slamming former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, I hate to disappoint you. It's not. Romney isn't my first choice for the GOP nomination or even my second as most of you know (Herman Cain is and has always been my first choice for the nomination followed by Georgia’s other favorite son Newt Gingrich.), however I want to commend Romney. Here's why: BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

MITT ROMNEY

t was reported a few days ago by Michael Falcone, the Deputy Political Director and reporter from ABC News that in an interview with People Magazine, Governor Romney has

I

admitted to trying out a cigarette one time and even tasting a beer, two vices that are completely against his Mormon faith. Am I proud that Romney broke with his religion and tried something out while he was a teenager? Not really. But I would like to point out how his vices compare to that of our President, who in his autobiography "Dreams From My Father" admitted that he had "used marijuana" and "maybe a little blow". Obama also admitted that the only reason he didn't try heroin was because he didn't like the pusher who was trying to sell it to him. That’s a great message coming from our Commander-InChief isn’t it? As I have written before, I think the media scrutiny of our candidates has gotten way out of hand as evidenced by the Romney interview as well as the ‘under-the-microscope’ treatment that all of the Republican frontrunners have had to endure, ie the allegations surrounding Herman Cain, the ‘baggage’ that Newt Gingrich carries with him as he is now with wife number three and the alleged affairs of Texas Governor Rick Perry. But for some reason when it comes to a Democrats’ past all is forgiven and hopefully for-

gotten. Bill Clinton is still a hero in the eyes of many even though it is fact that he had oral sex in the Oval Office and had countless affairs. Both he and Hillary have been given a pass on the Whitewater scandal. Although there are Congressional investigations in place, President Obama is escaping the media frenzy that would be enveloping a Republican president if they had his level of involvement in the Solyndra scandal as well as the ‘Fast and Furious’ mess that the Obama Administration oversaw. If you honestly don’t believe there is a liberal slant in the media, read the book Bias by reporter Bernard Goldberg. In it Goldberg reports that the main stream media’s unspoken code of loyalty against the Right wing in favor of the Left is not unlike the Mafia. He should know….He worked for CBS News for many years. One of the things that has made me respect former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for has been his combative attitude against the media that he has taken in the series of Republican debates. In one of the first debates back in August, Chris Wallace of Fox News asked Gingrich a question formulated to be controversial instead of about substance. Wallace asked, "How do you respond to people who say that your campaign has been a mess so far?" as members of Gingrich’s campaign staff had just resigned. Gingrich answered, I took seriously Bret's injunction to put aside the talking points," he said, referring to a request Wallace's co-host Bret Baier had made at the outset of the debate. "And I wish you would put aside the gotcha questions...I'd love to see the rest of tonight's debate asking us about what we would do to lead America...instead of playing Mickey Mouse games." When the applause finally died down, he said, "If you think questions about your record are Mickey Mouse, I'm sorry. I think those are questions that a lot of people want to hear answers to

and you're responsible for your record, sir…..I think that there's too much attention paid by the press corps to the campaign minutiae and not enough paid by the press corps to the basic ideas that distinguish us from Barack Obama," he said, as the audience cheered again. Touché Mr. Speaker. Here’s another interesting ‘fact’ that the media brought out in the interview with People with Governor Romney: his playlist on his Ipod includes The Eagles, The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Randy Travis and heaven forbid, The Killers. (Quite honestly I think Romney threw The Killers in there to be more hip and had a Dr. Evil moment.) Again, I'll take Romney's playlist over President Obama's which includes Nas, the modern day equivalent to Lord Byron, as evidenced in his rap "Smokin'". My n**** smoke with one lung If he cough he might die, passin me trees The liquor bottle's almost empty We about to collide, with the enemy Only way you die if it's meant to be You f***** with a general No discussion is the principle we bustin it's the end of youNow we knockin on your mama door Like we cam to fix the sink; my kind of war Death, angels comin for you Spirit horse runnin from your body like Young Guns 1 and 2 Paramedics fightin for you, who's gon' win? The hands of time, or the hands of medicine Don't cry, witness your fate, this is your wake Walk by your casket, spit in your face Enter the fog dog, the light is your guide And when you're gone all your n****z gon' light it with Nas Given the choice between the two, I'll take the Mormon from Massachusetts over the Moron from Maui.

The silver lining at Southern Precious Metals is they pay up to 70% of the market value for your gold and silver. A recent customer sold six, silver spoons and walked out with $480. We’ve all seen the guy twirling the sign around in the road. “We Buy Gold.” We recently went into one of those stores just to see what the deal was, and let me tell you it’s pretty dang good. If you’ve got some gold jewelry or silver coins that have been sitting in a sock drawer for too long, the folks at Southern Precious Metals can turn it into cold hard cash. Appropriately named Matt Dollar, who is also a pretty good disc golfer too boot, took some time out of his day buying gold and silver to tell us how it actually works. Matt Dollar and Julie Crews

What brought you here to Macon? Well I just sort of fell in here, my wife goes to Mercer Law School, and I just ended up here. I actually started out holding that sign, and now I manage the place. What is the deal with that sign guy? Man, it’s just something to get folks attention. And it works, believe me.

What can people expect to get when they bring in silver or gold? Well obviously, gold is more valuable. It takes 50 ounces of silver to equal one ounce of

gold. But we recently got a customer who brought in some spoons left to her from her grandmother, and walked out with $480 bucks in cash. What do you pay? I depends on the price of gold. Some of these companies only pay 20-30 percent of what the going rate is. Since we’re the middlemen, we have to make money to, however Southern Precious Metals pays up to 70% of the going rate. That’s about as good as you can get. What do you do with the gold when you get it? We melt it down and we work with the owners of the store who sell it in bulk in the market place. We don’t hold it long, especially when prices are up. It’s a lot like the stock market that way. Why should people choose Southern Precious Metals? We pay more, period. And it’s a perfect way to get some extra cash for the holidays. We take out gemstones you’d like to keep as well. Some places won’t do that. So come on in and we’ll tell you what your old jewelry is worth.

Saturday, December 3

Thursday, December 8

The Opening Act is downtown Macon’s newest live music venue. Located at 567 Cherry, it’s an intimate listening room atmosphere, the walls are adorned with ex-Hall of Fame photographs and other Macon music memorabilia, and best of all, there is never a cover charge. Beer and wine is available for purchase, and it is non-smoking. Thru December, the Opening Act will be hosting music every Friday and Saturday. This week, don’t miss Sincerely, Iris playing Saturday, Dec 3. He’s a singer/songwriter out of Savannah that just finished producing his own folksy album. The following week, catch favorite local songstress Abby Owens on Friday, December 9. All shows are from 7-9pm.

This music is a fusion of traditional southern soul & funk, layered with a furious harmonica that ties the group together & threatens to unseat it all at once. It has the familiar comfort of porch music but plugged in and turned up; The Delta Saints are driving listeners from their porches right to the edge of their seats. “…with a whip-smart, harp-and-dobro driven take on the blue, the Delta Saints are throwing down a raucious and righteous sound that more than lives up to the adopted name. With two artfully packaged, self-released EPs and a killer live DVD already on the market, the Delta Saints have spent the last few years cultivating a serious buzz and a rabid fan base around the Music City and throughout the southeast.” - Peter Cronin, SESAC Magazine

Dorian and the Alec Stanley Band. Scouts is a quartet from Kansas City, Missouri that made a name for themselves in the region from 2007 late 2009. After two rigorous national and multiple regional supporting tours Scouts found themselves being courted by a few labels and agencies in early 2009. These four musicians hold true to their Midwestern roots and dialect, but show a promise of appeal beyond the streets of small Midwestern cities and dismal college towns. Their music as been said to have the strength of Shoegaze icons My Bloody Valentine, the lyrical credibility of Pedro the Lion/David Bazan, and the melodic purity of ‘Clarity era’ Jimmy Eat World.

Something new downtown, Roasted is now providing live entertainment along with those great Date Shakes, warm coffees and cold beer. Open exhibition with art provided by Willie D and a Funk DJ set by Roger Riddle and ClarkAfterDark. Music starts at 10pm.

Sincerely, Iris consists of singer/songwriter Todd Murray who resides in Savannah. He has a sound that can be summed up best as “road trip music.” It’s a style that’s always changing, and always moving along. Whether it be gypsy-esque or like Kerouac's beat up old truck, shaking down the road at midnight, it is at once comforting, and somewhat unknown. Sincerely, Iris draws upon influences from Jeff Buckley all the way to Billie Holiday.Todd recently completed his new album, “The Great Unknown,” on which he plays 90% of the instruments, and wrote every song.

Men of Las Vegas @ AP’s Hidden Hideaway Listen up ladies, this night is just for you. The Men of Vegas is the premiere national touring all-male revue. It is the hottest Vegas-style male burlesque around, and best of all, there is not cover. That’s right, gather your girlfriends for a free night of harmless, tantalizing entertainment, for free!

FRI, DEC 9

Stumblin’ Toads @ The Bird A rock ‘n soul band out of Milledgeville, the Stumblin’ Toads are currently producing their first EP. "Pulling from influences such as The Rolling Stones, The Faces, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC, The Stumblin' Toads know how to show their audience a great time with their equally outstanding musical talent.

CJ’s has remodeled, both inside and out! Their new patio is a fantastic place to chill between set breaks of Macon’s own Whale Bone. Sean Pritchard, our contributing Nightwriter says, “think Fleet Foxes meets Abbey Road.”

SAT, DEC 10

Tyler Hammond Band @ Wild Wing After months of preparation, the Tyler Hammond Band performed their first show in August of 2009 at Capital City in Milledgeville. Since their first performance, the band played over 100 shows in their first year together. In October of 2010, the band had the opportunity to open for Luke Bryan during his Farm Tour in Macon, Georgia. With their unique southern rock sound, the Tyler Hammond Band has successfully revamped many country music covers, as well as collaborate to release an album of their own originals. Continuing into 2011, the Tyler Hammond Band will be touring all over the south.

MATT DOLLAR, MEMBER OF MACON ACES

The Macon Aces Disc Golf Club is running an event December 11th to help raise money for baskets, signs and tees for the new DISC GOLF course going in at Bowden Golf Course in Macon. Breakfast andn Lunch available in the clubhouse, beer will be sold as well. 8- 9:00am Check in at the Club House 10:00am Tee Off, 2nd Round will be 1 Hour after the last card is turned in Two rounds of 18 holes, Two Divisions: Pro $30/ Cash Payout Amateur $30/ Voucher

Disc golf rarely requires a green fees, you probably won't need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a bad "tee time." It is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status. In addition, you won’t need a $300 Taylor Made R 11 Driver to get the disk there. It’s all in the flick of the wrist. RECREATION

A New Spin to an Old Pastime Bowden’s temporary disc golf course will host “Bombs Over Bowden” on Saturday, Dec 11 to help raise money to make the course permanent. f there is one thing that rings true among many Maconites here today, it’s that it’s not that easy to get outside and do

I

things. We don’t have a plethora of hiking trails. I know, I know we have the Ocmulgee Trail, but it runs less than two miles. My wife’s family lives alongside the T.A.R.T. Trail in Northern Michigan. When we go up there we have access to not only the 10.5 miles of trail around Lake Michigan in Traverse City, but also to almost 100 more miles that connect to it. Now that’s a trail system. I know it takes money to get there, and I know the Friends of the Trail will do all they can, but in the meantime, a group of young men in Macon have pretty much introduced a sport here that is both conducive to our climate and our terrain, and gives us plenty of exercise. That sport is Disc Golf, and if Johnny Harrison and friends have their way, we’re going to have courses all over this town. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or frisbees. The sport was formalized in the 1970's, and shares with "ball golf" the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest number of throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the "hole". The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole Hole® an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the "putt" lands in the basket and the hole is completed. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it's sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are a few differences, though.

22 DECEMBER 1- 16, 2011

A

fears ago, when John Harrision was involved in a Leadership Macon class, they made it their project to build a Disc Golf Course at Claystone Park that overlooks Lake Tobosofkee. They raised over $20,000 to clear land, put in paved tee boxes and the pole holes. Now over 100 people a week pay an entry fee of $3 per person just to play disc golf at the State Park, not to mention disc rentals and sales. You may remember Johnny as the guy who made Bragg Jam Music Festival into a festival. His tenacity has created this movement, though the efforts of many are making things happen. Next up, the group formed by John Harrison, Biran Gordon, Johnny Jetter, Henry Chase and Jim Lupeno have their sites set on the city-owned Bowden Golf Course. Their first event, Bombs over Bowden, will be their first fundraiser. A disc golf tournament operates like a normal golf tournament, and all over the country, many public courses have added disc golf. At a typical tournament the winner can go home with $500, at a regional tournament $1000, and at a National Disc Golf Tournament, the purse is a whopping $100,000. The prize money is generated by hole sponsorships and entry fees. Bombs over Bowden is selling “holes for life.” Meaning a thousand dollar sponsorship gets your name and logo on the tee box forever. That’s a pretty damn good deal. And if they can raise the $18,000 needed to put the course in permanently there will be a new, younger element of people playing the public course. Fifty percent of the $30 entry fee will go towards the construction, and the other 50% will go to the cash purse for the winner. Matt Dollar, the top disc golfer in the state will be there, and Jeffery Reynolds, the 2008 Pro Am German Champion. The Bowden Disc Golf Course was designed as a Professional Championship caliber course and the future home of the Georgia Disc Golf Championships. The winner of the Georgia Disc Golf Championship will be sponsored to participate in the United States Disc Golf Championships hosted bi-annually in Rock Hill, SC at the Winthrop Gold Course. The other years the GDGC will sponsor a player in the PDGA Disc Golf Championships, at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, Ga. The Bombs over Bowden Tournament is the Macon Ace’s Disc Golf Club’s first event at Bowden. They also host the Fish ‘n Pig Moonlight Classic annually at Claystone Park. For the “Bombs over Bowden” tournament, the Course will play the “Skydog” Par 61 layout at around 7500 feet in length. The shortest hole is a 225 ft. par 3 through tight woods. The longest hole is a 723 ft. par 5 uphill through scattered trees in to the woods. The majority of holes have multiple pin placements that allow the course to change from a Par 58 to a Par 61. Permanent Hole Sponsorships are available through a partnership with Newtown Macon and are 100% tax deductible. “You are getting a permanent bill board in the middle of a high traffic tourist attraction. Your tee sign won’t just be seen on the course but all over the internet as well.” Call John Harrison at 478-228-0740 for more information. Cost to play is $30 for both Pro and Amateur Divisions. The cost to spectators is free.

SCENE DJ Slim, on a short break from touring

Favorite moment so far? When we were in Korea. We went to some big concert over there. There were 50,000 people out there. We had jetlag, and we were tired as hell but when we went out on stage, the energy was amazing, we were lifted up immediately. They knew every word to all his songs, but they couldn't speak English. Whenever he'd ask the crowd something, it would get real quiet, but they could sing every word. What are your plans with WIBB? I'm leaving the radio station in December. B.o.B.’s second album is about to drop and we're going to be hitting the road hard. We just played New York with T.I. I'm going to miss radio, but I'm really excited that I will get to wake up and DJ.

listen up Our readers got it right last year when they voted DJ Shawty Slim “Macon's Best DJ.” However, most of you probably didn't realilze that he'd be touring with a national artist not even a year later. The official DJ for B.o.B, Slim has been all over the world as of late. We caught up with him in Macon to see what he's been up to.

So what are you doing now? I am the official DJ for B.o.B. I've known him since he was 17 years old and he called me back in May. He recently called and asked me to go on tour with him and Rihanna. Two weeks later I was on the road and now my passport is half full. It's been pretty damn amazing man, and it happened real fast. It's really hard to believe actually, that I was in Amsterdam last week, and New York on Tuesday. It's cool to come back to your town and share your experiences with your friends. That's what I enjoy the most. But it's pretty cool being on stage on that big production too.

Are you planning on staying in Macon? I'll stay in Macon as long as I can. I imagine that I will eventually have to move to Atlanta. I love walking down Cherry Street, it’s like you never know what you are going to see. Whether it's Homeless Joe or the light show at the Dempsy, it's better than TV sometimes, man. What are your favorite places here? I don't eat out much anymore. I spend a lot of time at the Rookery though. I like the Rook. I always go in there with Jubee, I'm also a fan of Dolce Vita, and I like Fowl Play's tater tots. I used to hate having to drive down to Sonic just to get Tater Tots.

New Year’s Eve THE ONE AND ONLY

We know, Christmas music starts way too early on the radio and gets annoying by the second week of December. But there are some really great holiday compilations out there. Reader Moira Glennon Potter recommends the new She & Him “A Very She & Him Christmas.” A collection of holiday tunes from Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him). Inspired by seminal holiday albums by the likes of The Carpenters, Elvis Presley and more, She & Him have set out to create an intimate holiday recording of Christmas classics that helps bring new emotions out of old songs.

Valli Smith is listening to Mastodon; Daniel Groce is digging the Black Keys new single “Lonely Boy”; Jennifer Evans is playing Fleet Foxes and Clark Bush is listening to Deerhoof.
