omeone took to sending me clips from our old Cox TV show, The 11th Hour, this week, and everyone I watched made me smile. Having Chris Horne around, especially before he got so serious, was a lot of fun. One show in particular had Chris and our intern Drew Smith dressed up as pirates going after the Lake Tobo DNR. I think about all that stuff we used to do, and I start to feel old. I also got a few upset phone calls and facebook exchanges about our last issue. No. 1 was Scott Baston, lead singer of St. Francis, and a good friend of mine. He wanted to let us know that St. Francis also entered the Gateway Music Competition and consider themselves a Macon band despite him living outside Athens these days. Sean Pritchard wrote that Floco was the only local band that entered the competition. We didn’t mean this as a slight buddy, and you know we love you. I also got an as-yet unexplained facebook boycott by a Jubee and the Morning After band member, and a boycott from a Go Away Breath Easy Macon member pissed that I wrote about not caring about a smoking ban in Macon. That was just my opinion, which I’m entitled to, and as you can see on the cover, a fair, balanced article waits inside. As for the Jubee band member,

I’m sorry I couldn’t fit both full bands on the cover. We fight with deadlines every two weeks, and just didn’t have the time to get everyone in the same spot. That’s more apologies than I’ll issue in the next year, and to be honest, I only half mean them. Our lives here at the 11th Hour, for the past ten years now have been consumed with making our cities (yes plural) better places to be. What we do here, we also do in Warner Robins, and in Statesboro, including monsters like the upcoming Thriller Dance this month. We give huge dollars in discounts and ads to pretty much every non-profit that asks, and we sponsor every event and every concert and everything else in between that we can get our hands on. I spent more hours in non-profit board meetings in my early thirties than many men will in their entire lives. So if I feel like I’m entitled to my opinion in the paper, or if I feel like I can make capable artistic decisions for it, you’ll just have to excuse me. However, as readers, we do encourage comments and questions, and appreciate all the input we receive on a daily basis. Got an opinion you want it shared in the 11th Hour? Send it to bradevans11@gmail.com and you might just see it in our next edition.

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

Besides Sunny in Phillly and Boardwalk Empire the things I like on the Tube are pretty much all to do with Football. I made the horrible mistake of joining a Fantasy Football League this year and it has consumed a part of my brain that didn’t really need consuming. I hadn’t done it since before the days of computers and was assured that the computer did most of the work. Try telling that to my plethora of injured running backs who are constantly being drop/added and aren’t good enough to even be considered for the trading block. The only thing I really looked forward to when joining the league was insulting other Fantasy Players via the message board and it turns out in my league that is frowned upon. Either that or I’m playing with a bunch of chumps.

I was super disappointed that the Dr. John show at the Cox Capitol Theatre had been cancelled, since I bought my table already, but such is Macon. No tickets sold means no show. They do have MOFRO coming this weekend and a Micheal Jackson tribute band coming on Halloween weekend (it’s a Sunday, so make plans now!) which I heard some of the Zombies from the Thriller Parade may be in attendance for that one. I also heard Warren Haynes tickets are now on sale at the theatre, and though I’ve seen him way too many times, I’m pretty interested in his new Stax-o-fied Project.

I’ve been listening to Allen Toussaint’s “From a Whisper to a Dream”, A classic old Beach Boys Rehearsal from 1967, The Beastie Boys “Hot Sauce Committee”, Gun’s and Roses “Chinese Democracy” , with a little Johnny Winter thrown in for good measure. And I’m getting the Limo handled for a Richard Cheese concert in Atlanta come November, thanks to David Higdon. Also, I made my first bow kill this week, though it was only an armadillo, but I guess that means my grouping is getting a little better than it was last year. I hope those deer are watching for the biggest, loudest thing in the woods.

Pink is not for sissies

1500 registrants prepare for the October 15 Central Georgia Race for the Cure

F

or years, the color pink has elicited thoughts of spring festivals and cherry blossoms in Middle Georgia. But, thanks to a dedicated group of Maconites, now pink also evokes visions of a warrior-a courageous woman who, despite her fear, fights a voracious foe, Breast Cancer. And while she is fighting a personal battle for her life, her supporters are ensuring that this won’t happen to her daughters-they are racing for the cure at the Komen Central Georgia Race for the Cure. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation is the world’s largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists. The Central Georgia Affiliate, covering Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach and Twiggs counties, has been battling breast cancer since 1999. By providing education and support, particularly in underserved population, the foundation helps women to overcome their fears. “It is important to have a yearly mammogram,” former Race Chair Mechel McKinley said. “Some young women have witnessed their mothers, grandmothers, and aunts succumb to breast cancer and are

fearful. We help them to overcome their fears by showing them that there are things we can do now that we couldn’t do for grandmother. Early detection is key.” Formed in 1999, the first Komen Central Georgia Race for the Cure was held in October 2000. In just a few short years, the Central Georgia Affiliate has grown from a small group of women, who knew more needed to be done to help address the breast health needs of central Georgia, to a network of survivors and activists on a mission and with a vision to end breast cancer forever. We are always looking to educate young women,” said McKinley. “As early as high school, women should understand the importance of a monthly self exam. They should become familiar with their breasts to detect changes that may arise later in life.” Raising awareness is paramount in this battle and the annual Race for the Cure provides a platform for education and fundraising, as well as celebrating the victories of breast cancer survivors. Over 4,000 runners are expected to participate in the 5k race, raising $300,000 for the cause ($225,000

remains in Central Georgia and $75,000 goes to research at a national level). The activities behind the scenes of the Race for the Cure rivals those of any fortune five hundred company: recruiting volunteers and sponsors, publicity, securing a location, fundraising, dispersing grants from fundraising. Planning for this major event takes the efforts of over 400 volunteers and 2 paid staffers in addition to committee and board members. As soon as the 2011 race is over, preparations for the 2012 race will begin. After reviewing the year’s events, a new

battle plan is drawn up and a goal is approved by the board of directors (5 of them are breast cancer survivors). Race festivities begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct.15 at Central City Park; participants can register online, by mail, in person and the day of the race. Deemed the “Rock the Race” weekend, downtown Macon will come alive with good eats and good fun for an incredible cause. OP-ED CITY SCENE

The Eyes of a Traveler RICK HUTTO Macon City Councilman and published author

I

nternational travel offers not only the excitement of new venues and fresh perspectives but the opportunity to observe good ideas that can be replicated to our benefit. I’ve just returned from a two-week speaking trip to the western Mediterranean and found not only enjoyment but inspiration. Of the six countries I visited, Turkey was my favorite. This was my third visit and I was glad to confirm my earlier impressions. Not only is the scenery beautiful and the weather delightful, but the people there are generous, kind, and always helpful. They truly are proud of their country and want to show the rest of the world that, although they are a majority-Muslim nation, theirs is a secular state with no official religion and all faiths are encouraged. Several residents told me that most first-time visitors are shocked not to find a rocky and arid landscape with camels dotting the hillsides. With such strong competition from Italy, Greece, Crete, Israel, and Sicily on this trip, the factor that made Turkey such a winner was the sincere effort every person I

encountered made to welcome each of us. It was the only country to have musicians and dancers in native dress performing especially for us when we arrived. It was the only country to have a complimentary bottle of water waiting for each of us on our bus (most of the others offered it for sale on those rare occasions when it was offered at all). Turkey was also the only one of the countries I visited that had a written note of welcome waiting for each traveler from their official visitors bureau. And, unlike ancient ruins such as Rome’s Coliseum and Athens’ Acropolis, both surrounded by modern buildings and busy traffic, Turkey’s impressive archeological site of Ephesus, where St. Paul witnessed to the Ephesians, is so unadulterated and unspoiled that it is easy to imagine it exactly as it was in Christ’s day. In fact, His mother, Mary, spent her last years there being cared for by St. John who was given that specific assignment by Jesus shortly before his death on the cross. Why do I cite all these examples? Because Turkey doesn’t depend solely upon paid government officials for the responsibility to sell itself to visitors. Every single person I encountered made sure to welcome us with a smile. Want to buy a beautiful, hand-crafted rug? No problem – the mer-

The Electability of Herman Cain BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

s most of you have heard by now, former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain is now in the top tier of candidates running for the Republican nomination for President. It comes of no surprise to me, but it may shock many of you out there that in the most recent CBS poll just released, Herman has pulled into a tie for the lead with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and has leap-frogged over flash-in-the-pan and former frontrunner texas Governor Rick Perry. The question most people have as well as the political pundits out there is now is Herman Cain an electable candidate who could run against the Obama juggernaut. I answer most assuredly that he can and here are my reasons, not in any particular order.

A

1. Herman Cain is popular in the South. There's no question that just about any candidate from the GOP will carry most of the South, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina are pivotal states. A Southerner on the ticket might solidify victories there as all three states were narrowly won by President Obama in

10 OCTOBER 7 - 21, 2011

2008. If the GOP is to take back the White House, these three states are key. 2. Herman has practical experience. It's true that Herman has very little political experience, but Dwight Eisenhower didn't either. Cain's experience in the business world is unmatched by any candidate that has ever run for the presidency and practical knowledge is what is despirately needed to turn this country around right now, not lifetime politicians who are only looking to do what is politically right. 3. Herman is a strong advocate for the defense of our country. He has invoked President Reagan's philosophy of "Peace by Strength" but Herman has added "With Clarity" to his vision of foreign policy. He has made it also made it very clear that, as he told the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister, "If you mess with Israel, you mess with the United States." In a recent debate between all of the GOP candidates, only Cain tackled the question of Palestinian statehood and said,“If, in fact, it was clear to the Palestinians where the U.S. stood, they might have had second thoughts about trying to pull such a move without negotiating with Israel.” There is no doubt where this man stands, a statement that does not hold true for the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The demand for new housing units in downtown Macon continues to rise. NewTown Macon recently hired Zimmerman/Volk Associates to update their 2008 residential market study. According to the updated analysis, Macon has the potential to add 1,175 new units in the downtown over the next five years

chants have an agreement with the Turkish government to ship directly to your doorstep here in America with all shipping costs and taxes paid by Turkey including any import duties that might be charged by our government. Since we’ve taken advantage of this service I know it is efficient and prompt. What could be simpler? No forms to complete (other than a shipping address), no VAT taxes to be paid, no special custom duties to be incurred. We would certainly be wise to replicate their practices that make doing business easy rather than erecting barriers that impede business and create mountains of paperwork. My other example comes from Israel. This was my first trip there and I was surprised to find that the Christian pilgrimage is such a booming and profitable business. Although Jewish tradition reveres Jesus as an important prophet, they do not accept him as the Messiah. Yet they understand that millions of people around the world differ in that belief and many want to visit the sites that are so familiar from Bible scriptures. Again, they make it easy with speciallytrained guides who must pass stringent licensing requirements before they lead of group of tourists. While I might disagree with some practices such as a site offering a “re-baptism” (for a fee) on a dammed-up location on the Jordan River (with tinted water that would be at home in Disneyworld) located many miles from the actual site where Jesus was baptized, I must applaud the government for

4. Herman has an actual plan for economic growth. His 9-9-9 Plan puts a 9% flat tax on 9% tax on businesses, a 9% flat tax on income and a 9% national sales tax. This would eliminate the IRS while making businesses and individuals pay their fair share. It was also eliminate the death tax, payroll taxes and end nearly all deductions and special interest favors. 5. Herman is simply a likeable person. He talks common sense and plainly unlike a 'normal' politician. Ross Perot showed many years ago that the American people appreciated someone who would break things down to the lowest common denominator. Cain does just that and doesn't pull punches. He's taken a little heat for some of his comments, but one thing is for sure: When Herman speaks, it comes from his heart. If it were a prerequisite of our leaders not to make mistakes while making a speech, we certainly wouldn't have the 'human-gaffe machine' Joe Biden as Vice-President. I did save Herman's most 'electable' quality for last.... 6. Herman makes people feel proud to be an American again. If after you listen to a speech by Herman Cain and you don't feel the inspirational little hairs on the back of your neck stand at attention, you're in the advanced stages of rigor mortis. Much like President Reagan did to revive the country after the 'national malaise' of four years of Jimmy Carter, Herman Cain will make the United States respected again, not only globally but by our own people too. I can promise you that

their successful efforts to make Christian tourists feel welcomed. I was surprised to visit Bethlehem, the site of Jesus’ birth, and find that is located within a Palestinian enclave and all visitors must be cleared through a special inspection site before entering. Nazareth, too, where Jesus spent most of his life, is located within a majorityArab area. Although one fellow traveler expressed safety concerns to me before our visit, we never once felt the slightest hint of danger or even malevolence on either side of the checkpoint. The example that struck me, though, for replication here had nothing to do with tourism. The port city of Haifa is a rather unattractive industrial area with a large power plant and a rocky beach that doesn’t lend itself to vacationers. Taking advantage of their location, however, Haifa has become the chosen site for both Honda and Hyandai to ship thousands of cars to be stored, inventoried, then shipped out to other locations around the world. There were literally acres of cars parked in hundreds of neat rows. In a nation where gas sells for $8 per gallon, Haifa has re-created itself as the distribution site for the world’s best-selling automobiles. Surely Macon’s location at the junction of two major interstates makes us a likely candidate to be a regional distribution center. Let’s abandon the false hope of retaining passenger air service and re-create our airport as a national hub of freight transportation. We would be wise to emulate success.

HERMAN CAIN WITH WIFE

you will never see Herman Cain bowing to a foreign dignatary nor will you hear of him disrespecting the Israelis, while at the same time appeasing the Muslim community. (Please don't get the wrong idea...I know there are peaceful Muslims in the world. I'm writing about Muslims that live under Sharia law or terrorist states, not peaceful members of the world community.) In short, there is no doubt in my mind that Herman Cain is electable and will be a very good President. The field of Republican candidates is one of the most diverse we have ever fielded: There is one female (Michele Bachmann), two members of the Mormon church (Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman), two Lutherans (Gary Johnson and Bachmann), two Catholics (Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum), one Methodist (Rick Perry), and two Baptists (Ron Paul and Herman Cain). With all of that diversity, there is only one Herman Cain. He's an American original who is certainly electable and should never be taken lightly.

Questionable Knowledge

Q: How do you get a candidate’s disclosure form? A: It’s so simple a cave—er, sorry. Yeah, you’d have to be a moron to publicly state that you can’t find a record that’s clearly there. (Totally not referencing anyone in particular.) Let’s use disclosure from my campaign for city council as practice. The easy way is online, which you can access by going to www.ethics.ga.gov and clicking on “Candidate Reports” under “Search Reports and Records.” It’s great because you can just type in any candidate’s last name and see who has given them money. IF they filed electronically, which I didn’t do. I mailed mine in, so to see it, mail a request with a selfaddressed, stamped envelope to the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission (aka – the Georgia Ethics Commission) at 200 Piedmont Avenue SE, Suite 1402 – West Tower, Atlanta, GA 30334.

Semi-Poignant Facebook Picture of the Week

I saw one I couldn’t ignore on someone’s page. It says “When I shut my mouth and turn to walk away, it doesn’t mean you’ve won. It simply means your stupid ass isn’t worth any more of my time.” That’s a philosophy I’m personally adopting for local folks who DO have better things to do with their time but chose to stir up crap anyway. Without all our attention, they will, like plants without water, wither.

Gang & Teen Violence

Good (Job): Kudos to Al Tillman, Tony Lowden, Sonny Spoon, WIBB and the other folks who made local history by actually talking to the young people they want to help. While it might lead to more questions than answers right now, it makes more sense than calling in the National Guard as our now Council President once suggested. Last time we had a spate of violence like this Tillman was the head of the local chapter of the NAACP and he called for a curfew. Recently a criminal justice professor told council members that curfews are largely ineffective and most often used as a political remedy instead of a real one. Well, in the time since he called for a curfew and now, Tillman has only gotten more and more involved with the community, working from the streets up instead of the top-down approach some folks prefer. Bad (News): The media reported various versions of: “Gang members blame violence on neighborhood rivalries.” That part is true and you can hear it online at WIBB.com, but these “gang members” also took umbrage with the media’s reporting, or lack thereof. In particular, that they are in gangs instead of competitive but otherwise friendly crews. I’ll abandon the semantics for now and focus on the part the media didn’t report: its own culpability. At a minimum, it was obvious that the reporting—whether the fault of information from the MPD or a misunderstanding of the situation by the press—has bred distrust in the neighborhoods where this is happening and stirs up unnecessary assumptions in the neighborhoods where it isn’t. In other words, one unintended consequence is that people who aren’t dealing with it but are afraid start making suggestions that don’t work. Ugly (Truth): When Tillman asked how the community is supposed to get these teens to put the guns down, one of the young men said, “It’s really on us to take care of our community. We can’t expect no one to help us but us. …Then (the authorities) try to find a solution to the problem without coming to us. That’s another problem. How can you expect to help the neighborhood when you’re not from the hood, when you’re engaging with someone who’s from the neighborhood?” This makes sense. The top-down approach is doomed to fail not only because it tends to be reactionary, but also because of its arrogance, presuming that you can know what’s best for someone when you aren’t walking in their shoes. And like it or not, when one side of town suffers we all will.

ARTS & EDUCATION

THE MOTIVATING YOUTH FOUNDATION WILL RAFFLE A 2012 CAMARO - JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

T

he Motivating Youth Foundation (MOYO) founder and Executive Director, Roger Jackson, is passionate about providing youth with college scholarships. “I would like to provide 50 – 100 kids a year with scholarships to the college of their choice,” he said. Jackson has teamed up with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to raise funds for the Motivating Youth Foundation Scholarship Fund and the Omega Psi Phi Scholarship Fund. On December 21, 2011 at 2pm at the Family Investment Center located at 905 Main Street in Macon, MOYO will raffle a 2012 Camaro (compliments of Youman’s Chevrolet in Macon, Georgia), just in time for Christmas for the lucky ticket holder. The drawing also includes a $1,500 gift card; a $1,000 gift card and a $500 gift card (all compliments of Ken’s Audio in Macon) and an Acer laptop computer. Tickets will be sold beginning on September 29, 2011 and will continue until 1pm on December 21, 2011. Tickets for the raffle are $20 each and there is no limit to the number of tickets an individual can purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Motivating Youth Foundation Scholarship Fund and the Omega Psi Phi Scholarship Fund. Jackson said, “With this raffle, the lucky winners get a wonderful Christmas gift for themselves or a loved one and those who don’t win are assured that, for the price of one dinner out, they have helped a local youth realize the dream of college.” Tickets can be purchased at or www.moyofoundation.com, where you can find more information about the raffle and the Motivating Youth Foundation. Tickets will also be available at the following locations: BB&T - Macon Mall, Youman's Chevrolet, Ken's Audio (Macon & Warner Robins). As a former NFL professional football player, Roger Jackson is committed to using his resources to positively influence the lives of youth in middle Georgia. Jackson founded the nonprofit 501(c)3 Motivating Youth Foundation in 2008 and the After School Program opened its doors in 2009. The program provides opportunities for youth to excel in school through hands-on tutoring, online tutoring, motivation, rap sessions, characterbuilding and one-on-one and group mentoring through social and athletic field trips. Located at 905 Main Street in Macon, Georgia, the after school program is open from 3pm -- 6pm during the school year and from 7am -- 7pm during the summer months. For more information, visit the website, MoyoFoundation.com, or call (478) 752-5185.

Pictured above are some of the winners from the Motivating Youth Foundations first raffle in June. The grand prize went to Katie Harris of Villa Rica. She received a check for $8,348.89. The same amount went to the Motivating Youth scholarship fund, Jackson said. Also pictured is Linda Harris who took home the 4th place prize, a check for $1000. The MoYo Foundation’s first raffle was a grand task, hoping to sell 20,000 tickets at $100 each, and giving away a grand prize of a million dollar dream home (donated and located in Gray, GA). “We couldn’t give away a $1.1 million house and sell only two tickets. The rules were that we had to sell 20,000 tickets in order to give away the house. We did not meet that goal,” said Macon native and former Denver Bronco Roger Jackson. During the eight-month raffle period, they sold 583 tickets. The foundation hopes that with the cheaper ticket price, it will be easier for the public to support this new raffle and his afterschool program in East Macon, where public school funds for such programs has dried up.

FRI, OCT 7

The Dirty Guv’nahs @ the Capitol

The swell of grassroots momentum for this 6piece rock outfit has generated considerable buzz up and down the east coast. In 2010, the band recorded their most recent album Youth Is In Our Blood in Levon’s famous barn, and they haven’t looked back since. With opening act Ponderosa. Show at 9pm. Tix $10/$12dos.

Janelle Monae @ Grand Opera House Mercer University’s QuadWorks Fall Concert will feature Janelle Monae and fun. The concert is part of the national Campus Consciousness Tour and will be held Oct. 7 at the Grand Opera House in downtown Macon at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the public and $8 for students. Janelle Monae is an R&B and soul singer-songwriter from Kansas City, Kan., who has been called “a different kind of diva” by Vogue Magazine and “a true visionary…one of the most important signings of my career” by Sean “Diddy” Combs. She has had success with her Grammy-nominated debut EP, “Metropolis: The Chase Suite,” in 2008, and her first full-length LP, “The ArchAndroid,” in 2010. Tickets can be purchased by calling (478) 301-5470.

GIRLZ, GIRLZ, GIRLZ @ WILD WING

Matt Pippen @ Wild Wing Café Matt started playing music in Macon, Ga. In the house band at a local hang out, with band memebers that included Jason Aldean, Wes Robinson, Justin Weaver , Michael Benefield, Richard Passmore and several others. From there he went on the road, playing all over the southeast United States. Auditioned for and GOT the guitarist job for Local Star Jason Aldean in early 2004-2005, and held it down for a couple of years. Worth a serious listen as one of the best players in Macon.

SAT, OCT 8

Free Lance Ruckus @ The Opening Act, 567 Cherry A progressive reggae/rock band out of Haddock, GA, these guys are determined to save live music from the “ravenous corporate pigs.” Original music with passion.

SUN, OCT 9

The Rivermonks @ The Rookery

A folk/indie band out of Des Moines, this talented group tours with a ukulele, trumpet, all sorts of drums, among other things.

THUR, OCT 13

Wild Moccasins @ The Rookery

THE RIVERMONKS @ THE ROOKERY Houston-based psychodelic pop quintet follows their 2009 debut "Microscopic Metronomes" EP with "Skin Collision Past". Their singular style has been described as high-energy pop driven by guitar and guy/girl harmonies where dual vocalists Cody Swann and Zahira Gutierrez alternately provide harmonies and backing vocals for each other. "Skin Collision Past" brings an even bigger sound than their debut which is evident on the recording and their live performance. Smart lyrics plus a big guitar presence from Andrew Lee culminate in a collection of infectious modern songs with classic pop influences.

FRI, OCT 14

Miss. John Doude @ The Shamrock Mississippi John Doude is blues, rock, folk and country all rolled into one, yet none of these would quite describe his unique style. With a sound that’s as swampy as snake oil, and as gritty as the cloud of dust on a dry dirt road, creating a juke joint trance that’s infectiously nasty. From barn-burning country bluegrass to delta blues, MJD’s stripped down roots music takes you back to where American music began, capturing the soul of the blues, the heart of country, and the attitude of punkrock along the way.

Tim McNary @ APs McNary was formed in January, 2009. It's current members are front man and rhythm guitarist Tim McNary, Dan Sheffield, and Elliott Phillips. Folk Pop at it’s finest.

SECOND-HAND BROKE Is the city’s proposed smoking ban going to kill Macon nightlife

SCENE

-- or will failing to pass it kill us all?

W

hen Tim Obelgoner first heard about the proposed smoking ban, which would make it illegal to smoke indoors and anywhere children play, he didn’t think much about it. But he co-owns the Hummingbird Stage & Taproom, so he did his research—due diligence—and began to find things that bothered him. Sure, he was concerned about how much money his business would lose if, suddenly, he had to turn his smoking clientele away, but there was more. There was the trickle down impact: lost revenue, lost jobs, more empty storefronts, declining sales tax collections, reflexively raised property taxes, and more people leaving the city. The Hummingbird, he figured, would take a hit but others might not survive it. He multiplied that loss out over the city and saw a disaster waiting to happen for Macon: a doubledip recession in America’s seventh poorest city with the bars in its already struggling downtown area going out of business. And for what? No one is forced to patronize the Hummingbird, Obelgoner says. No one has to work there either. Besides, if lawmakers are really worried about people who believe they must take jobs around second-hand smoke, why aren’t they equally concerned about the people who’ll lose jobs they actually want to keep if the ban takes place? “We run a bar. That’s what we do. Part of what we do is smoking,” Obelgoner says. “(The ban) will decrease our revenue and perhaps will force us to consider moving to another location. It will almost certainly put some of our competitors out of business.”

Doom and Gloom Councilwoman Nancy White, an oncology specialist and sponsor of the proposed ordinance, doesn’t believe there’s reason for the doom and gloom, though she understands why business owners would be concerned about the changes. Change is always hard, she says, but she believes society pushes forward and adapts, and in the long run everyone benefits. “If I were in their shoes, I’d be very apprehensive about this too,” White says. “But lung cancer is the number one leading cause of preventable death. Years ago, doctors told pregnant women it was okay to smoke. We’re always having to adapt to new information.” Fears that businesses in Macon will suffer are overblown, she says, calling attention to other Georgia cities that have banned smoking in bars and seem happy to have done so. She wants Macon to join the list of progressive cities who’ve taken the step, like Athens and Savannah. Savannah’s smoking ban went into effect January 1 this year and the city’s major, Otis Johnson, who helped lead that effort, issued a letter to Mayor Robert Reichert in support for Macon’s effort to ban smoking. “What I’m looking at is the body of information that denies, historically, that this decline in business has happened,” White says, adding that more than 300 cities in the US have similar bans already in place. Though some call the proposed ordinance a government intrusion, she likens it to health department regulations. “This is a public health issue. We require workers at restaurants to wear hairnets and wash their hands. They can be fined if they don’t keep food at a certain temperature. It’s all to protect the public.” Pam Parker is a bar owner in Ohio who started a group to oppose the statewide ban that went into effect there in 2006. She says the ban hurt her business and ran others into the ground. “You know how many people we had on the first day of the ban? Four. We open at noon and we were always packed. Four customers all day.” She says some of their business went to private clubs and others went to counties where enforcement is lax, but most of them stayed home. To prove it, she pulled records from the Ohio Department of Commerce to show the number of bottles sold wholesale and retail in the state. From 2007 to 2010, 3.2 million fewer bottles were sold to bars and restau-

rants while 14.6 million more bottles were sold for home use than averages before the ban took place. The resulting loss of revenue? Parker estimates $419 million in lost sales with the state of Ohio losing out on more than $28 million in sales tax revenues.

Where’s the Beef? When Reichert vetoed the ordinance in April, he called for changes and cited the need for council to consult the public and specifically bar owners that this will impact. White says there was a public forum held at the Douglass Theatre in January and up to 30 people attended. It was hosted by lobbyist Lora Hawk and Breathe Easy Macon, the campaign designed to help get this smoking ban passed. It is funded with money from tobacco company settlements and run by the Cancer Action Network, the advocacy arm of the American Cancer Society. Hawk says she has also been meeting with bar owners to discuss the ordinance. “As the daughter of an independent business owner and as an independent business owner myself, I would never personally want to do any harm to anyone’s business,” Hawk says, admitting that she isn’t sure how the proposed ban would impact local businesses’ bottom line but hopes business would improve for bars, pointing to a recent survey conducted by the University of Georgia that reports 80.7-percent of Bibb County residents are non-smokers. “My thinking is, if you’re inherently closing your doors to 80-percent of Bibb County now, that you’ll do better if you become non-smoking.” Critics of the ordinance say they still haven’t been heard. The recent city-hosted forum, held after the mayor’s veto, had only five council members in attendance despite a crowd reported of more than 100 people. Obelgoner says that’s further proof council members have already made up their minds. Alex Webb and Phillip Sinclair, who own the nightclub Element, agree. They started a Facebook page called “Go Away Breathe Easy Macon,” which at last count had 515 members. The fan page for Breathe Easy Macon, by comparison, has 85 “likes.” With the city and the county “pushing hard for a new SPLOST,” Sinclair says he’s been urging people to vote against it because he doesn’t believe local officials are acting fiscally or economically responsible in regards to the smoking ban. “We seriously think it’ll hurt our business terribly,” Sinclair says. Webb explains, “We don’t survive on Bibb County residents. Most of our business comes from Warner Robins, Milledgeville, Byron. If you’re a smoker, why would you drive all the way here to stand outside when you can go to a bar where you live?”

Survey Says... Opponents of the smoking ban say part of the problem is with the survey itself. One, it was funded by Community Health Works, which sponsors Breathe Easy Macon. Sinclair says, “You can make the numbers come out like you want if you’re paying for it.” In specific, Sinclair noted that a majority of respondents believe smoking should be allowed in bars, casinos and clubs. Webb says, “Their own survey says 53.3-percent of Bibb County citizens don’t support a smoking ban.” “And 80-percent of the people they asked were nonsmokers,” Sinclair adds. They questioned whether the survey actually represents the beliefs of Bibb esidents. In its executive summary, the survey says: “Men, whites, younger respondents, and respondents with a less than a high school education were significantly more likely to report having smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life, and to report smoking now every day or some days.”

According to the demographic breakdown of the survey’s 700+ respondents, researchers surveyed a disproportionate amount of whites and people with at least a high school education. Though a slim minority of the county’s residents are white—46.3percent to 49.7-percent who are of AfricanAmerican decent, according to the US Census—58percent of the survey’s respondents were white. But, the respondents’ race had a seemingly negligible impact on their response: 70.4-percent of whites and 69.3-percent of nonwhites favored a smoking ban in all public places. Same was true when asked whether smoking should be allowed in bars, casinos or clubs: 52.6-percent of whites and 53.2-percent of non-whites support it. However, education was a greater predictor of a person’s opinion on smoking. Someone with less than a high school education was twice as likely as anyone else to think smoking should always be allowed in restaurants. More than 61-percent of high school dropouts support smoking in bars, casinos or clubs, compared to the next highest number, college dropouts, at 54.4-percent. Only 8.8-percent of high school dropouts were included in the survey even though the US Census reports 24.4-percent of Bibb County’s population doesn’t have a high school education. At the same time, 36-percent of those surveyed have at least a bachelor’s degree even though only 9.4-percent of Bibb County’s residents can claim that level of education, according to the US Census. Further—and perhaps more poignant—91.8-percent of the survey’s respondents are registered voters, compared to the roughly 45-percent registered of Bibb County residents who are eligible to vote.

Health Related... For Councilwoman White, there is no argument stronger than the cost of human life and suffering. The Center for Disease Control estimates that second-hand smoke causes 46,000 heart disease deaths and 3,400 lung cancer deaths, each among nonsmokers every year. Bibb County also pays a healthy price for indigent care to the Medical Center. In cities like Helena, Montana and Toledo, Ohio, White says studies show a decrease in heart disease since smoking bans took place there. DeKalb County and the city of Augusta have turned away similar efforts for a total smoking ban for reasons similar to the objections heard in Macon: fear of lost business and jobs. Even still, Macon is unique, critics argue. Sinclair says, “In Athens, 60-percent of the storefronts aren’t empty and they have (thousands of) college students who are going to go out no matter what. Savannah has tourism and the bars in those districts are fine but the ones off the beaten path are suffering.” Though sympathetic to the fears bar owners have, Hawk says the animosity around this ordinance seems to stem from a lack of communication between city council and local business owners. It’s bred civic distrust, but that she’s also heard a lot of positive comments from the community. “I have heard a lot of interest from people in the community who want to clean-up Macon’s image, who want this to be a safe, clean place for them and their families to live,” she says, “This ordinance is a progressive step forward.” Obelgoner says he likes progress too, but having a downtown that’s packed is more important. Had the city made that kind of progress, this would be a different story. “If I had even the slightest notion that I could make more money by making our bar non-smoking, I’d do it voluntarily.” CHRIS HORNE 11thHourOnline.com

I

'm not allowed to talk about Dubstep anymore. It's in a Britney Spears song and girls that wear North Face jackets listen to Skrillex, it's too popular and therefore no longer indie-relevant. They never saw this coming, it got too popular too fast, which was never supposed to happen. I guess the hipsters lost this battle, oh well at least there's still Chillwave. No one on earth listens to Chillwave besides h-kids. I'm just wondering what we're going to dance to now, you can't put the genie back in the bottle, right? The Cross album is just a bit lackluster after hearing "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." I'm kidding, let's bring back Le Disko. It should be in someone's garage, though. Or on top of the parking deck behind Element. Luckily the kids can still disco, DSEL is keeping things fresh and bringing in more glitch house/glitchstep (look it up) and live music production. Check out BoomBox with EP3 midway through this month at the Capitol. Everyone is gearing up for the fall, more shows and parties. Roger Riddle has been seen more places than just behind the bar at The Rookery. If you missed him with Doski Wo and Flocco Torres at The 567 then you missed a show you shouldn't have. If you missed BASSFACE with Wick-It the Instigator then you missed a show you shouldn't have. Nick at DSEL is also gearing up for the fall by opening up Roasted Cafe & Lounge. It's going to be like Octane in Atlanta: beer and wine as well as coffee and tea. Downtown needs a place like this. A place anyone can hang out during the day and night, and started by someone who has a real heart for the Downtown scene. Roasted will also feature live performances,I've already booked Megan Jean for a show in December. Aside from booking, you might also find me behind the bar some nights. I've been experimenting a bit and I can't wait to debut the Roasted exclusive PBR latte, so be on the lookout. Also, Roasted will offer a place for hookah to the good people of Downtown Macon, so stop by and drink something and smoke something. So last week I said that we would have a contest and that a date with me would be the prize. I also wrote a rambling, overly introspective article chronicling twenty-something maladjustment and doubt. Thanks to those of you who messaged me on Facebook thanking me and telling me how you related to the article. I mostly expected Brad to edit out the last paragraph detailing the contest; I wrote it at five in the morning, I was feeling mischievous. However, he did not edit out the paragraph and now one of two things will happen: Either there will be a picture of me on the cover of this week's issue holding flowers with bold font surrounding me saying, "Win A Date With Dylan York!" and I'll have to scramble together contest rules and put them down in this column. Or nothing will happen. I guess if you really want to go on a date with me send a short descriptive paragraph about yourself and a picture of you in a Native American headdress to info@dylanyork.com. Talking to me when you see me out could work, too, but I'm usually awkward when people are like "Hey, you're Dylan York" and I lie and tell them my name is Nickye J. One time my little brother called

me late one night, he always calls me when he has a shocking revelation about growing up, and he told me, "Sometimes, I'm out and girls flirt with me and we talk and they insinuate that they want to go home with me," then he paused and said, "And really, dude, I've found out that it's more fulfilling to just go home and do whatever the hell I want to do and then go to sleep." I can dig it. I may never fulfill my dream of finding

a girl who teaches yoga and listens to Jedi Mind Tricks. I don't know where I'm going with this, I guess I'm just saying it's not you, it's me. Let's just be friends and maybe one day we can talk, but right now, Macon, I think we should just do the going-out-in-groups thing. You know, not one-on-one but just hang out with friends. What does dating mean anyway? That's so 1990s.

As the weight of carrying this scene on my back bares down more heavily, stay tuned to The 11th Hour for more mindless rambling from your ol' boy Dylan York. Also, if you see the real Nickye J out tell him to accept the friend request I sent him four months ago. It's still pending. Thanks for understanding, Macon, I'll be by next week to get my copy of Stone Rollin' that I left in your car. Until then, stay hip.

GEORGIA KAYAK BRINGS NEW RETAIL DOWNTOWN osh Howell loves getting on the river about 9:00 am on a Saturday morning and spending a lazy day swimming, kayaking and enjoying the great outdoors. So an outdoor outfitter business was a perfect extension for his professional life. Howell says, “Downtown Macon was a natural location because of the proximity of the Ocmulgee River and the Riverwalk. I want people to experience the river and not forget all of the beautiful natural resources we have in Middle Georgia.” He has a working relationship with Ocmulgee Expeditions owners Brian and Stephen Adams to further enhance what they are offering with their river trips. Georgia Kayak will offer new and used kayaks, canoes, outdoor apparel and footwear. In addition, Howell can place specialty outdoor orders. “I want to provide anything a cus-

THE URBAN EXPLORER

What you should be getting into this week... BY SEAN PRITCHARD

T

he weather the past few days has reminded me once again why I tolerate the ridiculous heat we must deal with during the summer. Along with the cool weather comes a surge of activity throughout our city. In the past few weeks, Macon has been recognized as the 2nd Urban Main Street Community in the state of Georgia. Through this developmental program, you can expect to see an dramatic increase in the revitalization of real estate and small business in Downtown. Gateway Macon just announced their final contest in a series of three giveaways that have significantly benefited residents of our city, as well as drawn an immense amount of national attention to the city. The Macon Mogul contest was designed as an incentive to draw outside investors to our city but also promote local entrepreneurs and small business. To enter, you (anyone) must submit a two-page detailed business plan explaining why your business would be successful in Macon. If you win, you'll be awarded a location Downtown, rent for one year, and a HUGE chunk of change to get your business on its feet. Check out www.gatewaymacon.org if you have more questions. The International Cherry Blossom folks did an amazing job with the 2nd annual Levee Festival in Central City Park. I spent most of the day there as a volunteer and there was never a dull moment. Kudos to them for pulling off yet another successful community event. Things keep rolling this weekend with some excellent live music. On Friday, Janelle Monae (yes, for real) and fun. will be stopping in at The Grand Opera House as part of the College Consciousness Tour, a nationwide tour designed to promote sustainable practices and renewable resources. The show is open to the general public and it's damn cheap for such a great lineup. If for some reason, that's not up your alley, than walk down the street to the Cox Capitol Theatre for The Dirty Guv'nahs. These guys have rocked Macon before at Bearstock and Bragg Jam and they cease to impress. Saturday will be just as busy with Grindfest 2011. Grindfest features more than a dozen local metal, hardcore, and grind bands on two stages at The 567 Center. Bring earplugs and wear shorts. I'm personally excited to see Grinchfinger, Be Easy, and Sugar Virus. In between bands at The 567, I'll be down at The Hummingbird for their final Big Bird Bash Festival. They have raised over ten-thousand dollars for CASA, a local charity that benefits children in need around our community. If live music isn't your thing, there are a few things that I've been made aware of recently that I'm very eager to check out and hope you will to. Georgia Kayak just opened their doors in Downtown at 487 Second Street. I walked by with a friend a few days ago and it looks like they're going to add a much needed resource to our community. Should you not be able to afford a kayak of your own, get in touch with Brian or Stephen Adams and reserve a trip down the river with Ocmulgee Expeditions. I haven't made a trip with them yet, but the times I've gone down the river with friends has been a great experience and this weather makes for perfect voyages.

Given that this weather is amazing (last time), I've been riding my bike more than ever with my friends. I learned that in Milledgeville, there is a rather active Bicycle Polo crowd that gets together in the evenings to play. Macon vs. Milledgeville, anyone? I was riding in the industrial district earlier this year and noticed a building with a sign that said "Middle Georgia Boxing Club". I've been curious for some time if the building was still in use as a boxing club and after dinner with a friend recently, I was informed that the club is still very active, but they're in need of more local support. They have a decent amount of boxers and trainers, but it's a close knit group that could use expansion. I'm excited to head down there and find out what it's going to take to get to the point where I can knock out one of my older brothers. The following week will more than likely hold a trip to the Mulberry Street Market for fresh veggies and grass-fed meats. There's an amazing thing going on in the park every Wednesday, so please try to get down and get your share of good eats. On Thursday the 13th, an awesome band by the name of Wild Moccasins (pictured above) will be making a stop at The Rookery. The band is on tour from Austin, Texas as they make their way to CMJ in New York. Check them out. They would love to meet some Macon folks. On Friday, there's a good bit going on as usual. The Queen of Hearts Ball is set to take place at the beautiful Armory Ballroom. All proceeds benefit the Rainbow Center of Macon, an organization set up to help AIDS victims live comfortably in Macon. The folks that organized this have been working like crazy to make this a great event and I encourage you to support it. The Rainbow Center has been operating on a minimal budget for a long time and they're in dire need to help. If you don't feel like getting dressed up for a good cause (shame on you) and want to try something a bit edgier, The 567 is hosting a national tour package featuring hardcore bands A Bullet For Pretty Boy and The Great Commission, plus 4 other bands. This tour has been featured all over the country as the "next big thing" and I know there will be a great crowd. So, if you don't like good food, riding bikes, live music, helping your community, exercising, the outdoors, or winning $50, 000 to start your own business, than unfortunately I'm not going to be of any help to you this week. I'm always open to getting outside and exploring so if you've got the free time, let's go. I can't wait to see what Macon is like six months from now. There are amazing things happening and you can be a part of them.
