PUBLISHER’S NOTES

I

got a letter from Jason Howard over Christmas. Most of you probably know that name by now. I say this because we get phone calls, emails and we get stopped on the street continuously about the pages from his notebooks that we’ve been publishing under the headline “In My Head.” I’d written Jason to tell him how much response we’d been getting. What I got back, while pretty typical from Mr. Howard, was too good not to share.

“Mr Brad Evans, I found your letter suspicious for the following reasons…1) It wasn’t on company letterhead. 2)It’s been almost three years since my arrest. People couldn’t still be interested in me. 3) It was not mailed in business size manila envelope. 4) The line ‘I hope you are well.’ sounded like you lifted it from a cartoon. Are you a cartoon Mr. Evans?” He went on to explain that he feared I was posing as Brad Evans to try and get information from him about the Liberty County incident for which he has been charged. He goes on to say that he has been one hundred percent honest with investigators. And that he did not

kill or bury “those people” in Liberty County. Those people were his mother and stepfather, though he never mentions that in his letter. He also claims that he was never a fugitive in Macon. This in itself is suspicious since he was on Americas Most Wanted Fugitives list for over four years. He claimed that the past three years in county jail have altered his character and his mind and his health has suffered, while he has awaited trial. He claims that many documents he needs for his defense have not been given to him by the DA. He’s worried that because the Public Defender and the DA know each other that they are colluding against him. “After about 2 years of living on the levee in Macon I quit calling myself homeless because I had much of what I needed. I very much miss Macon, it’s home and where my heart is, when I think of a better place, I think of Macon.” Keep enjoying his rants and neurotic scribblings, we’ll print one page from his journals every issue. See the new installment on page 26. Enjoy!

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

I’m really still not sure who is better looking, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Daniel Craig. But that movie was the best thing I’ve seen this year. I didn’t read the book, because it had the word “Girl” in the title and I automatically assumed “Chic Lit.” Man was I wrong. Serial killers, journalism, and a bad ass café racer that I’m too big to ride but can still long for. I’m not a huge Derek Trucks fan. What the guy has in guitar licks, he lacks in personality, in my opinion. But the super group he formed with his wife, Susan Tedeschi is pretty bad ass. The song “Learn How to Love” is my favorite. Check it out if you haven’t.

Every few years, I face a long journey to Michigan for Christmas. Driving through snow and rain 16 hours to sit at my sister –in laws house for a week. The worst part of this is that I have to leave my dogs Kazi, Bandit, Lulu and Dr. Pickle behind. Dr. Debbie Gadd at Animal Doctors of Gray makes this all better. The attention they pay to our animals surpasses the care that I often get at my human doctors office. If you have to go out of town, there really is no better place to kennel your pets, and believe me, I’ve tried them all. At Animal Doctors of Gray, you can bring along your dogs bones, toys, bed and food to help make them as comfortable as possible, and all the techs greet each furry friend as just that. Check them out, their office is just 10 minutes from downtown Macon.

I’ve been re-reading one of the first books I recommended in the column. C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. It’s one of the most captivating pictures of the American West I’ve ever read.

Community Supported Art Program to Launch in Macon

E

arlier this month, The 567 Center for Renewal and the Macon Arts Alliance teamed up on a new project to promote local artists and foster new collectors within our community. The program is called "Community Supported Art: Macon" and it is based on a Springboard for the Arts program model first introduced in Minnesota. That model was patterned after "Community Supported Agriculture," a program in which local farmers sell "shares" of their harvest to "shareholders" who receive a box of produce and goods at the end of the growing season. MERLE HAGGARD IN CONCERT AT THE MACON CITY AUDITORIUM

In the ever-expanding array of country music stars, hitmakers and idols, Haggard walks in no man’s shadow. Instead, he casts a far-reaching shadow of his own. Rare is the country balladeer that has mastered the idiom at so many different levels as has he. His accomplishments would lead some to sum him up with a catchall cliché like “legend,” but legends are about the past, about those who are about to be swept off into some dusty corner record bin somewhere. Haggard can’t be pinpointed in the past. And he won’t be found rockin’ and whittlin’ with a shoebox full of yesterday’s memories. His music speaks to country audiences today, while his mind and talents flirt with a new millennium. Tickets $35 and up. Charge-by-phone 800.745.3000

with the owner of The Downtown Grill, Richie Jones The Downtown Grill is an English Steakhouse that specializes in prime cut Black Angus steaks, fresh pasta dishes, fish filets and decadent desserts. This fine dining restaurant also features a well stocked bar that includes a vast array of scotches and bourbons, an extensive wine list and a large oak cigar humidor. Open Monday-Saturday 5pm-Until with Happy Hour Drink Specials in the bar from 5-7pm. 562 Mulberry Street Lane

How long have you been at Downtown Grill? In April, it will be four years. How did you get started in restaurant industry? I was in college and I was about to move into a house and so I wanted to learn to cook, and I needed a job as well so I decided I'd get paid to cook. I liked the fast pace of a restaurant and so I kept going back to it.

MEET THE BOSS

Richie Jones is the hard-working and innovative proprietor of the Downtown Grill. Richie is a Macon native who is a graduate of First Presbyterian Day School and UGA.

How did you acquire DTG? I was looking at a few different restaurants in Macon as well as other cities and this restaurant just seemed to be a good fit for me. I liked the downtown vibe and just the history of the building and the atmosphere. What do you enjoy most about running a restaurant? I enjoy meeting people and getting

to know them. I also like working with a great staff. (Editor’s Note: Downtown Grill has consistently won Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Waistaff and Best Overall Restaurant.) How do you feel about owning a business downtown? Downtown is great. There is a great vibe downtown and there are so many people who support downtown and want to see it grow and prosper. I lived downtown in Athens and loved being able to walk to everything and I think that's the direction Macon is headed with more and more business here. What is your favorite thing to order at Downtown Grill? Hmmm, very tough question. I would have to say one of our weekly specials, the goat cheese and cranberry stuffed filet.

The Wrecks and Effects of 2011 What’s Next for Macon in 2012?

by JESSICA WALDEN

The Lofts at Mercer Village opened this fall, welcoming Mercer students to its loft-style living spaces and new businesses to its ground-level retail shops.

University and West Georgia University. There’s speculation that the institution will magically reappear in Atlanta. Downtown Macon now has another empty property on its unwanted list in 2012, but in the meantime, NewTown Macon secured the Capricorn Recording Studio property on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard that sat vacant for years. Plans are underway to turn it back into a working recording studio, Macon music museum and historic marker. The Allman Brothers Band Museum, Grant’s Lounge and Rock Candy Tours are also working hard to preserve Macon’s rich music heritage and make it a viable part of Macon’s heritage and cultural tourism.

SPLOST Passes (But Not Without a Fight) Who knew pitching a penny could cost a city so much debate. By the time the SPLOST went to ballot in November, you were either for Macon or against it. Lucky for all of us, the majority was in our favor. The $190 million Special Purpose Local Sales Tax referendum, which will increase Bibb County’s sales tax from six percent to seven percent on April 1, 2012, is funding a wish list of projects that are intended to increase the quality of life for all of Bibb County for years to come. Some are necessary for public safety. Others, such as a new animal shelter and new recreation center, were necessary for a good community. But on the multi-million dollar laundry list of repairs, developments, improvements, upgrades, debt retirement and purchases, it was the $2.5 million it allocated to finishing the Tubman African American Museum that was the favorite bone to pick against the sales tax. Mayor Reichert said that kind of decision-making was like “not buying your dream home because you didn’t like the curtains in the kitchen.” With the penny coming into play this year, we just got the keys and stepping up to that house’s welcome mat. According to Mayan prophesy, New Age scholars, numerological and astrological gurus, 2012 is the year the world either makes it or breaks it. Life as we know it could either undergo a positive physical and spiritual transformation or face global catastrophe from an epic event like colliding with a black hole. One small speck on our endangered planet is a town located in the heart of Georgia that has had its fair share of successes, failures and close calls over the past year. Whether or not the stars align, the numbers add up or the Mayans were right, this is the year it counts for Macon, Georgia. Here in 2012, we’ve finally reached a tipping point to becoming the town we always wanted or cataclysmic failure in spite of progress. Let’s look back at the top 11 events of 2011 and see what the past might mean for our near future.

Four More Years of Mayor Reichert Well, the Jack came back . . . the very next election he qualified. Former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis narrowly lost to the incumbent Macon Mayor Robert A.B. Reichert in a heated runoff race. The low side? The race was socially divisive. The bright side? There was record attendance at the polls. Ellis retreated once again to consulting obliv-

ion, and Mayor Reichert wiped his brow and went back to the job he’s got to love . . . or he wouldn’t be doing it again. He’s got crime perceptions (and realities) to fight, consolidation to bush hog and dreams of a Second Street gateway that echoes Macon’s prettier stepsister city of Greenville, South Carolina to make happen. But his biggest hurdle ahead? The same one that has been a hurdle all along – will this be the year where Macon City Council cuts him some slack?

The Georgia Music Hall of Fame Packs Up & Leaves It had a storm cloud over it before it ever opened its doors. After almost 15 years, it finally quit threatening rain and just washed the state music museum away. In June 2011, the lights went off at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in downtown Macon. The artifacts were either returned or sent to other music archives at the University of Georgia, Georgia State

Mercer Village Creates a College Town The Lofts at Mercer Village opened this fall, welcoming Mercer students to its loft-style living spaces and new businesses to its ground-level retail shops. Barnes and Noble at Mercer University, Fountain of Juice, Designer Tan, Margaritas Mexican Grill and Rodeo Beach are the newest kids on the College Hill Corridor business block, joining Mercer Village neighbors Ingleside Village Pizza, Jittery Joe’s Coffee and Francar’s Wings. Construction immediately began on Phase II of the Lofts at Mercer Village, which involved the monumental moving of three historic homes within the neighborhood. And it was announced near the end of the year that Mercer’s journalism school would occupy the bottom floor. The Macon Telegraph and Georgia Public Broadcasting would also be joining them 11thHourOnline.com

– locating some of their staff to the school’s new location to provide real-life learning experiences in an unprecedented media-teaching model. You couldn’t ask for a better blend of students, reporters and businesses that cater to their need of coffee, pizza, wings, Mexican food, beer, books and Patagonia and flip-flops in one condensed area. But Mercer Village is also going to need customers from the entire community in order to survive, thrive and continue creating a college town vibe in this tough economic climate. The College Hill Corridor remains the area of town leading the charge in making Macon into a college town. This is also the year that the College Hill Alliance, the administrative arm of the Corridor’s master plan, is set to sunset on its original Knight Foundation grant. While the Corridor effort has been declared a bona fide success, two of the biggest items from the public meeting planning process – Tattnall Square Park renovations and a neighborhood grocery store – have limped along. With the Alliance turning its focus to its “College Hill 2.0” plan for job creation through tech business recruitment, it’s up to the community to help the Corridor continue what it started.

Mercer Gets Ready for Football They claim to be “undefeated since 1942,” the last time they had a football team. Mercer is now ready for a rematch. Last November, the college broke ground on a new football and lacrosse complex that will soon see a new breed of Bears. The facility is expected to be completed this fall, with the non-scholarship program signing players in February. It won’t be game on until 2013, but that doesn’t mean the pep rally hasn’t already begun. This is the year when the community has its chance to show its support for a sports team that will actually stick around. Now’s the time to get your orange and black in tact, start searching for the perfect tailgate spot and get your season tickets for something that could truly transform our town.

The Atlantic Cotton Mill Burns to a Crisp There were high hopes for the high cotton appeal of the $13.5 million plan to turn the Atlantic Cotton Mills property into residential lofts. But that all changed in March 2011 when a fire ravaged the historic property and left it a total loss. The fire was one of the most massive and dangerous blazes our fire department has seen in some time. Nobody was physically hurt, but many found it painful to watch such cruel fate take over the reclaimed historic development. But out of the ashes came good news later in the year. The $1.5 million in state grant funds originally slated for the Cotton Mill was shifted to the Dannenberg Building development to create apartments in downtown. Construction will begin in

12 JANUARY 4 - 18, 2012

February. The 100,000-square-foot building at the corner of Third and Poplar Streets will house 69 apartments and additional retail spaces. More residents living in downtown only means more business development. Hope is now restored.

Mercer Law Student is Brutally Murdered When news broke that recent Mercer Law grad Lauren Giddings had been brutally murdered, with just her torso discovered in a trash bin outside her apartment, she became everyone’s daughter, sister, friend, neighbor. The town was instantly seized by shock and awe that such a horrific incident could happen in our backyard – in an area like the College Hill Corridor that was fighting crime perceptions and encouraging student residents, nonetheless. Just when it couldn’t have gotten any worse, Giddings’ classmate and apartment neighbor Stephen McDaniel was soon arrested and remains the prime suspect. There’s not much more to say about this crime that hasn’t already been strung out in the local media, who has exhausted just about every angle possible. But if there is anything that hasn’t been talked about it enough, it is the resilience and grace of the Giddings family. While questions remain unanswered and an ugly trial process looms ahead, the family remains close to Giddings’ life in Macon. They don’t fault our fair town for such a terrible nightmare. They appreciate the place where Lauren lived her dream.

In a surge of summer violence, Macon walked through the valley of the shadow of death. And it was quickly sensationalized into a Gangsta’s Paradise. But there was no doubt there was a serious spike in violence – and Macon’s youth was in the line of fire. Two teens were shot while waiting at a bus stop. More were shot at another teen’s birthday party. And a string of additional shootings took place over the course of one night. Multiple plans were presented in stopping the violence, but no one had the magical answer. While it seems Macon has lost a generation who are Godless, fearless and lawless, we’ve still got kids who are listening. This is the year to support Macon’s mentoring organizations, so we’re not still talking about this problem in 2014.

David to her Goliath, Chris Horne, a lifelong resident of Macon, former editor of the 11th Hour, contributing writer for the Telegraph, a jack-of-all-trades and Mr. Mom. He had no political experience, but he was creative, likeable, passionate, authentic and knew all the issues like the back of his hand from years of covering them as a writer and town observer. From mud slinging to scare tactics, the race got ugly . . . especially if you followed them on Facebook. The dirtiest name Lucas could call him? A Republican – even though Horne was a declared Democrat and had the local backing to prove its. In the end, it only came down to less than 150 votes, with Lucas keeping her title. We’re talking a mere matter of inches. If this has been a horse race, Lucas was the horse who stuck out her tongue just as she crossed the finish line. But even with the good, bad and ugly of Lucas vs. Horne, something changed in our community. The status quo was in danger. For all the young whipper-snappers like Horne who never fancied themselves in politics but care about the community, it was inspiration to step up and be a part of the change you want to see in Macon. The old political guard of Macon has been issued a warning shot. There’s a new guard on the next campaign forefront.

Chris Horne Gives Elaine Lucas a Run for Her Money

The Gateway Initiative Turns Up the Heat

The race for the Ward 1, Post 3 seat on Macon City Council had everyone in Macon watching. And they got the fight they wanted. In one corner was the veteran incumbent Elaine Lucas, who’s held her seat on city council for 24 years and has been a crock pot of controversy with her outspoken nature and flare for facing drama wig on. In the other corner was a

Tired of the front porch columns and antebellum appeal that Macon has relied on too long in the tourism industry, the Gateway Initiative was launched to market Macon outside of Macon with the sexy ad campaign “It’s Hotter Here” that featured everything from martinis on fire to fire-eaters and pin-ups. They created a song and video “A Little More Soul” that

Gang Violence Becomes Everyone’s Problem

used the talents of Macon’s local McDuffie Center for Strings, as well as our local Rolling Stone Chuck Leavell and local rapper Sonny Spoon, that not only won our community’s hearts but went on to went national awards in advertising. But they haven’t been done there. They’ve launched contests in movie-making, song-making and now mogul-making. Between attracting outside filmmakers, getting behind Macon’s own musician Floco Torres and now picking a winner that will leverage an economic impact and increase the cool factor, the Gateway Initiative has got to be dripping with sweat from the hot year they had. Now, let’s see the return of their hard work in 2012 – bring on the outside visitors, scouting filmmakers, more music stars and businesses wanting to come here.

Macon Music Goes Mainstream Somewhere a hipster cries each time a local artist goes “mainstream.” Well, sorry, dudes. You better break out the back-pocket hankie in 2012. Last year we saw two local acts get a nibble while fishing for a chance at stardom. Jubee and the Morning After got put on a plane to Seattle and played their hearts out on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Floco Torres now has an MTV-worthy video “Cherry Street” to shop his talents to the big dogs. And there is no doubt that the support system for our artists has amplified over 2011 as well. Just take a look at local event attendance lately – the Bragg Jam Festival, Second Sunday concerts, Levee Fest, even events like the “Thriller Dance” and Cherry Blossom Ball Drop – that have Macon out in masses. It’s up to our local artists to give these masses what they want and in 2012, they want more, more, more.

SEEING RED

Just What The Doctor Ordered? I want to preface this by stating the obvious: I am not a Ron Paul supporter. I am, however, a supporter of former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Now that I got my disclaimer out of the way I want to make comments about the Iowa Caucuses. BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

RON PAUL

ver the past few weeks poll after poll have been taken in Iowa. For a while, Gingrich had a hefty lead there, but now it appears that Congressman Paul has surged to a top tier status in the Hawkeye state, even passing Romney and Gingrich in one poll. But how can this phenomenon be explained? Is it because Dr. Paul did so well in the last debates? (By most

O

accounts, Paul came off as nutty at best.) Is it because Dr. Paul wants to end the Federal Reserve as we know it? (The common voter could care less about The Fed and probably doesn't even know it's role in the economy.) Is it because Dr. Paul has bold fresh ideas like letting Iran peacefully coexist while developing a nuclear weapon? (Yeah, that should endear him to Iowa voters.) Or is it because Dr. Paul continues to rant that the Founding Fathers would be in favor of his foreign policy? (The Founding Fathers were hardly isolationists...Thomas Jefferson was the first President to send US forces to a foreign country when he send the Navy to modern-day Libya to attack the Barbary Pirates. James Madison tried to invade Canada and he annexed parts of Western Florida that were under Spanish rule.) Paul's meteoric rise has absolutely nothing to do with his ideas, but can on the other hand be accounted for due to the onslaught of negative advertising that the Congressman has done at the expense of Speaker Gingrich, inparticular an TV ad called "Serial Hypocrisy" that is being shown more often in Iowa than a Ron Popeil knife commercial. Congressman Paul should be ashamed of the tactics used in order to grasp at a nomination that he will in no way shape or form EVER get, though he is despirately trying to convince the voters of Iowa that he is the only true

Conservative voice in this race by any means possible, especially disregarding President Reagan's 11th Commandment that "thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican." Instead, Congressman Paul has chose to run a campaign of slash and burn that would make General Sherman blush. It's completely understandable that Congressman Paul doesn't remember a great deal about President Reagan, though, as when the President needed his vote, Paul left him standing at the alter in favor of leaving the GOP and becoming the Libertarian candidate for President in 1988. Let me remind all voters about some quotes that can be atributed to Congressman Paul: The Houston Chronicle reported on May 23, 1996 that: Texas congressional candidate Ron Paul's 1992 political newsletter highlighted portrayals of blacks as inclined toward crime and lacking sense about top political issues. Under the headline of "Terrorist Update," for instance, Paul reported on gang crime in Los Angeles and commented, "If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be." Paul, a Republican obstetrician from Surfside, said Wednesday he opposes racism and that his written commentaries about blacks came in the context of "current events and statistical reports of the time." ..."Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the `criminal justice system,' I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal," Paul said. ...He added, "We don't think a child of 13 should be held responsible as a man of 23. That's true for most people, but black males age 13 who have been raised on the streets and who have joined criminal gangs are as big, strong, tough, scary and culpable as any adult and should be treated as such." (Dr. Paul claims a ghostwriter did this for him in his newsletters....Even so, the man signed off on them.) Paul once said about Abe Lincoln:

"I don’t think he was one of our greatest presidents. I mean, he was determined to fight a bloody civil war, which many have argued could have been avoided. For 1/100 the cost of the war, plus 600 thousand lives, enough money would have been available to buy up all the slaves and free them. So, I don’t see that is a good part of our history. Besides, the Civil War was to prove that we had a very, very strong centralized federal government and that’s what it did. It rejected the notion that states were a sovereign nation." (Source: Rightwingnews.com ) On the 40th Anniversary of The Civil Rights Act, Paul said on the House floor: "The Civil Rights Act of 1964 not only violated the Constitution and reduced individual liberty; it also failed to achieve its stated goals of promoting racial harmony and a color-blind society. Federal bureaucrats and judges cannot read minds to see if actions are motivated by racism. Therefore, the only way the federal government could ensure an employer was not violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was to ensure that the racial composition of a business's workforce matched the racial composition of a bureaucrat or judge's defined body of potential employees. Thus, bureaucrats began forcing employers to hire by racial quota. Racial quotas have not contributed to racial harmony or advanced the goal of a color-blind society. Instead, these quotas encouraged racial balkanization, and fostered racial strife." (Source Lewrockwell.com) These quotes certainly don't sound like someone who should be a nominee of our party do they? (They certainly don't to me and I know that I will be incurring the wrath of his supporters, which I have given an open forum.) Now I know that on the surface you might be thinking I'm breaking Reagan's Commandment myself. I'm really not as I don't consider Congressman Paul a member of the GOP. I doubt you will either if he runs as a third party candidate which will certainly guarantee another four years of King Barry I.

SCENE listen up Travis Denning: Emerging Talent in the Mid-State few months ago, I sat down with Homeless Hill and was treated to the company of a group of pretty cool guys, dedicated musicians each in their own right. The youngest among them, guitarist Travis Denning, was the most recent addition to the band and not so long ago a graduate of Warner Robins High School. When drummer, Danny Savage, said that Travis could play anything with strings I had no doubt the statement had merit. But then I listened to the tracks from his upcoming solo EP. You see, I knew Travis plays a lot and with a lot of different people, that he has a quality of self-contained discipline, but what I didn’t know when I met him then is that the evolution of his sound and ability as a songwriter is far beyond his years. While learning guitar at the age of ten, Travis was given the benefit of an intuitive teacher, and very encouraging parents. At that stage in the game, Denning’s song of choice was AC/DC’s Highway to Hell. But true to the form of an afficianado, he has since branched far outside of rock ‘n roll’s boundaries. These days Denning is exploring the deep and fertile roots of country music. You can often find him playing a cover of Luke Bryan’s “All My Friends” to the late night crowds at the numerous gigs he performs all over the state. One of his

A

Denning plays the Mellow Mushroom in Macon on January 13th

all time favorite HoCo spots is the Tavern at Southland Station which hosts music throughout the week and brings in a good crowd. “The place gets packed and the people who come to see the shows are great. The staff is really friendly and more like friends than people who work as your bartender or server. It’s a really great place to play at.” In Macon he has a soft spot for the Cox Capitol Theatre, where he played with Chris Hicks and had a great time. “But the Hummingbird is a lot of fun too!”, he mentions as an aside. Denning’s favorite song to listen to these days is, hands down, “Jolene” by Ray LaMontagne, a classic anthem of the rugged individualism that country music embodies. “Every time I hear it I think, damn I really wish I had written this!” On top of some heavy blues, found in songs Denning has written like “No Town” and the definite undercurrent of rock and roll that permeates his guitar style, these elements are found in his own songwriting. Lyrics like those found in Just Jaded, an off kilter melodic offering with a little bit of grit has Denning often compared to Niel Young “I have a story to tell. I want as many people as possible to hear it. I live for those moments when someone tells me how much hearing my song meant to them. It ‘s happened a handful of times and it drives me forward. I’m ready to do this.” Travis Denning's EP, “Everything That I Am” is available at the end of this month and consists of 7 songs. It can be purchased at $5 wherever Travis performs. Saturday, January 14th

Grag your guy or gal, this is a date night both sexes will appreciate with Macon’s own super-duo Vic and Abby opening for husband and wife act Shovels & Rope. Less is more. Make it work with what you've got. 2 Guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heapadorned with tamborines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine.

Hailing from Mobile, this group of musicians describes their music as Alabama swing and foot-stompin’ folk. With six band members and instruments such as a rifle, blunderbust, mandolin, pistol, tomahawk, and tambourine, one wonders how the band will fit on the Rookery stage, but you can be sure their set will be like nothing else seen in Macon before.

NIGHTLIFE | the city’s best bets when the sun goes down

Don’t miss the folk duo Shovels & Rope at The Bird, Friday January 6th

URBAN EXPLORER

What you should be getting into Looking back on 2011 and looking forward to another year in Macon, GA. Heres to council consolidation, a Fall Beer Festival and more music than ever, cheers! BY SEAN PRITCHARD

A

s one typically tends to do around this time of year, I spent a decent portion of my holiday break reflecting on the nearly completed year. 2011 was an impressive year for Macon, let alone our world. Out of the chaos and excitement, hard times and dark times, the thing that stood out the most to me was the astounding amount of progress that we've made as a city and community. At least a dozen new businesses have opened in the Downtown area, that number far exceeding that throughout our city limits and into the surrounding county. We were treated to live music from everyone from Grace Potter & The Nocturnals to Mix Master Mike to Lucinda Williams and much, much more. Gateway Macon announced their series of contests that are continuing to draw national attention to our city's arts and entertainment while groups like Main Street Macon and New Town are stronger than ever. The Mulberry Street Market has added a much need locavore flare to the lives of business owners, consumers, and residents and the College Hill Corridor project is well into its second phase. That's not to say we didn't have our share of upsets, confrontations, and disagreements but I think we're all getting a bit better at learning to understand and resolve our problems together. 2012 is sure to be an even more anticipated and progressive year for us and I look forward to spending it with you all. I'm particularly excited about these first few weeks of the year. I've invested in a pair of running shoes and I plan on wearing them in on the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and around Rose Hill Cemetery. I made my only resolution this year to be more conscious

of how I treat my body and this, along with biking, should be a great way to get in the right mood for that. I'm planning on spending the first Friday of this new year at The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom singing and stomping the night away with sets from our own Vic & Abby (Owens) and the extremely talented husband and wife duo from Charleston, South Carolina, Shovels and Rope. Comprised of Michael Trent and Carey Ann Hearst, these two have put on some of the best sets I have ever seen. They're a true example of how music can create and nurture the bond between two people. For fans of country, bluegrass, folk, whiskey, women and America. Drink your share of water and take a cab home because you need to be at Roasted the following night for an art show featuring the works of James Hance and music from Roger Riddle, ClarkAfterDark, and JuBee. Roasted is proud to offer some of the best specials in town and if you're a fan of hookah, they'll get you set up with a table outside. The following night (you can do it) the bizarre and mind-blowing sounds of Trioscapes will be at NoSpace alongside Xavii, all this courtesy of Macon Noise Records. Trioscapes is the brainchild of Dan Briggs (bassist for internationally known math/metal group Between The Buried and Me), Matt Lynch (drummer for Macon/Warner Robins based Eyris) and saxophonist Walter Fancourt (Brand New Life). The group formed with the intention of covering Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Celestial Terrestrial Computers" and eventually wrote and recorded a set of songs. The bands sound is a unique blend of off-tempo, jazz fusion blended together by Zappa. Regardless of your musical background, if you have an appreciation for dedicated and intricate talent you should be here. I've got plans to spend the next night somewhere around town watching the NCAA National Football Championship. I'm hoping that The Rookery will be kind enough to open up that night but if not there's plenty of other places to catch the game at. After you spend long enough time in the South, you sort of have to stay up to date on football happenings and I actually have grown to really enjoy it over the past few years. The following weekend you should take the trip up to Atlanta to the famous Earl to see Modern Skirts, The District Attorney's, and Tedo Stone. Some of you may be familiar with Tedo Stone but if you're not, now's the time. The man has written some of the best music I've heard coming out of Georgia this past year and he'll be giving away his upcoming EP for free at the show. Saturday, January 14th. Macon resident and drummer for JuBee & The Morning After, Alex Scarborough has been playing drums with Stone for sometime now so you can expect a good crowd of locals. You can also start looking forward to seeing Netherfriends, a one man band from Chicago as he stops at The 567 Gallery with Pressed And and Macon's Amy Godwin. They'll be getting down on Friday, January 27th. And just as a friendly heads up, Rubblebucket will be coming to town for a show with JATMA, Baby Baby and Triathalon at the Cox Capitol Theatre on Thursday, February 9th. Get to know Rubblebucket now. I mean it. Both the International Cherry Blossom Festival and Bragg Jam 2012 are gearing up for another year of events that are sure to be conversation piece's that will take us well into 2013! I'm excited to be working with the Cherry Blossom Festival this year so you can expect plenty of updates on all their happenings. There's a reason Cherry Blossom is ranked in the Top 50 events in the United States and this year marks their 30th anniversary so you can be sure to expect the best festival yet. The festival is scheduled for March 16th - 25th and Bragg Jam 2012 is set for July 28th. Mark your calendars! Without sounding too much like Dear Abby, I just want to encourage everyone to strive to make this coming year better than the last. Try new things, meet new people, go places you've never been and respect where you are and who you're there with. I think sometimes Maconite's can be a bit impatient with the improvements and progress in out city. Compare Macon now to Macon 10 years ago and then think about where we can be in a decade more. I'm hoping for the consolidation, a Fall beer festival, more music than ever, new business, and many more good things. Thanks to everyone for 2011. Cheers.

Opera Baritone Allan Evans, Xavii at The Hangar & much more

MATT MILLER I was lucky to see some great music around Macon in the last two weeks, but the standout event was getting a chance to meet the Macon-born and European-based opera singer Allan Evans during his short stop in town to visit his family. Evans was a classmate of Otis Redding at Ballard Hudson High School in the late 1950s, and by the time Redding was climbing the popular music charts in the early ‘60s, Evans was studying at The Juilliard School in New York, and planning a move to Europe to pursue his career. Since settling in Germany in the late ‘60s, Evans has become one of the world’s preeminent bass-baritone singers, and in 1996 he was awarded the title of chamber singer, which is one of the highest honors the German government bestows on distinguished performers. Despite Macon’s sterling record of celebrating hometown musical heroes like Redding, Little Richard, and The Allman Brothers, Allan Evans has never received the recognition he deserves here. Granted, it’s hard to imagine an opera singer garnering the adulation that a popular rock or soul musician would in Macon, but it is certainly high time that the city officially recognized Evans’ incredible life and career. On the 20th, I caught the ethereal trio Tanosweg along with the rhythmically progressive Xavii, at The Hangar Bar and Grill on Houston Road. The inscrutably named Tanosweg features vocalist Meghan Dowlen along with guitarists Dustin Murdock and Zack Matthews performing original compositions that often pair earthy vocal harmonies with unpredictable guitar lines, and a range of percussive effects. Stripped of the rhyth-

Throughout his storied career, Macon native Allan Evans has performed many of what he calls “the monumental roles of operatic repertory.” From the brash Don Giovanni, to the jealous and violent Dr. Schön in Alban Berg’s Lulu, and the Norse god Wotan in Wagner’s Die Walküre, Evans’ stentorian bass-baritone and commanding acting skills have won him universal praise in his adopted home of Mannheim, Germany, and hero status in his hometown. mic and harmonic tumult inherent in much of their earlier work together in bands like Xavii and The Polygraph Event, Tanosweg focuses heavily on dramatic melodies building toward catharsis. I’m looking forward to hearing an album from them sometime soon. Xavii has firmly established its reputation as the foremost purveyor of rhythmically sophisticated rock music in Macon, and their set at the Hangar Bar was typical in its unrelenting drive and carefully crafted abstraction. Murdock and Matthews lead the band as composers and musical instigators -lending a mercurial edge to the group’s sound with their veering guitar lines and effects -- but the heart of the group’s rhyth-

mic power lies in the tandem of bassist Clark Bush and drummer Steven Ledbetter.

Moments after I arrived at The Hummingbird on an otherwise quiet Thursday evening last month, a succession of short, bass-laden samples erupted from PA as Floco Torres walked to the front of the stage and delivered a series of explosive rhymes. The samples were a warm-up for Torres, but his focused delivery certainly felt like the real thing. “We’re gonna take our time,” Floco remarked as the last sample faded out and his band joined him on the stage. Throughout their focused set, Floco and his band -- featuring new members Shawn Williamson on guitar and Justin Cutway on bass, along with drummer Travis Reeves and D.J. Montalban who have been with the group for over a year -- covered pieces from their latest album, Floco’s Modern Life with a freshness and intensity that is often absent when a group has been covering the same material for months. It has been a milestone year for Torres on a number of professional fronts -- the release of his album and an important collaboration with the organization Gateway Macon stand out -- and that has only added to his confidence and ability as a performer.
