early fifty years ago. when Buck Melton and Cubbage Snow came down the aisles of Wesleyan’s auditorium handing out Aspirin, audience members didn’t know what to think. They were, of course, preparing them for the pain of the next two hours, as some of Macon’s most prominent citizens chorus lined their way into history. That year, the members of the Civic Club raised thousands of dollars for a signature project, a new planetarium at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Later they would leverage their standing in the community to save an old theatre called The Grand Opera House. Now 51 years later, The Civic Club of Macon is getting ready for the spotlight once again. What’s is sometimes called “The Miracle on Mulberry” the Civic Club’s 51st annual musical review is set to take center stage Wednesday, February 1. Scott Spivey, a local lawyer and civic club member who was tapped to be lead the show this year, says that every year, the show feels like a divine intervention has taken place. “To have so many people coming together, and none of us are professionals, really is a miracle. They told me when I took over as chair, that it would feel like we’ll never pull it off, almost until the curtain is drawn back on opening night. I’m finding out exactly what they mean.” Scott’s job as show Chair is not an easy one. He came up with this year’s theme “Livin The Dream” in the shower only a few days after being picked to lead. Then it was time to come up with the musical numbers. Scott and his lovely wife Jacki, who is also in the show, came up with songs like “Blue Sky” by the Allman Brothers, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy” and a few Jersey Boys numbers are just a few highlights from this year’s set list. Scott also has to work with different committees regarding everything from dancing to costumes to set

design. Luckily, old pros like Director Jim Crisp and Music Director Laura Voss, take some of the pressure off. As is always the case, the net proceeds from the production will be donated to numerous charities throughout the Middle Georgia area. In addition, this year, Livin’ the Dream, will benefit Theatre Macon and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia with the proceeds from the Wednesday evening show, Heart of Georgia DDM and Jay’s Hope with the proceeds from the Thursday night show, Bo’s Camp and The Andy Anderson Project with the proceeds from the gala on Mulberry Street on Friday night, and Central Georgia Autism and the ALS Association for the Georgia Chapter with the proceeds of Saturday evening show.

Full name, hometown? My name is Anne Lyndon Peck. I was born in Macon. I recently found a charming letter that I received from the mayor a few days after I was born. It welcomed me as the newest citizen of Macon; apparently everyone received one back in the day! What Mac products are you most excited about right now? That’s a difficult question to answer as all Apple products are exciting, but personally I really enjoy my MacBook Air. This ultra thin and light notebook (weighing less than 3 lbs) can be taken any where with ease to access your email, create documents, take notes, browse the internet and much more. It really just doesn’t get any more convenient than that!

MEET THE BOSS

PeachMac’s founders, Darryl and Anne Lyndon Peck, have been in the Apple/Macintosh market for over twenty years and their businesses have won countless awards for service excellence. In 1995 they founded Outpost.com, the Internet’s first retail establishment, and for many years they were Apple’s largest online retailer in the world. Their software company, Inline Software, published over 25 award-winning titles for the Macintosh from 19891994, including Best Game of the Year, and Best Children’s Software. PeachMac carries everything you could ever want or need for your Mac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, or AppleTV. The store also offers Mac training sessions, and free workshops. The store is located in The Shoppes at River Crossing.

Our love and enthusiasm for all things Apple is infectious. Please stop by to see us for all your Apple needs. What exactly is iCloud? iCloud is available on any device equipped with iOS 5 and Macs with OS X Lion. iCloud is a seamless and effortless way to store and access your valued documents, music, photos, and more from any and all of your Apple devices – wirelessly. For instance if you take a photo with your iPhone, it’ll appear in your iPhoto library on your Mac as well. If you download an album from iTunes on your Mac, it’ll automatically download to your iPod. Everything you need and want accessible on every Apple device you own. What do you do in Macon for fun? I live in Athens now (after living in Connecticut for 16 years!) I enjoy visiting my friends, many of whom I have known since nursery school. When we’re in Macon, my children and I also like to visit the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Favorite independent restaurant in Macon? I have loved Ingleside Village Pizza ever since it opened. The white pizza is terrific, but everything I’ve ever eaten their has been delicious. My family also loves the S&S Cafeteria; their fried chicken is a family favorite.

I was a little worried about putting Crossfit on a list of things I like, because it’s spent the last few weeks bringing serious pain into my life. Along with some friends, I joined North Macon Crossfit with the hope of getting in decent shape. At this rate, I could turn into Brian Bosworth within the year. They’ve got us hitting tractor tires with sledgehammers, throwing kettle bells around like they are going out of style, and doing some awful thing called a burpee way too many times a week. I’m down 7 pounds after the first two weeks, and I’ve got to say, I’m starting to feel great. If you are looking for a hard ass workout - look no further. Three days a week for less than an hour. Selling 101... why do you recommend a Mac? There are countless reasons to recommend a Mac. Macs are designed with the user experience in mind – appealing to the eye, user friendly, and multi-functional. Macs come with software that people love using like iPhoto, iMovie and more as well as the world’s most advanced operating system Lion. One thing a lot people are not aware of is that Macs can run Windows and Windows applications with ease. What’s not to love about that?

After this workshop, you should feel comfortable with the basics and ready to discover the remarkable things you can do with your new Mac. a lot less awful than it really is. I was disappointed last week when, after we got to our seats and bought a ten-dollar beer, Merle Haggard cancelled. But after reassuring us that he’d play the show in April, I understood. Merle ended up spending a couple of days at the Medical Center, where he was treated for pneumonia. I hope I can find that ticket stub. I got to interview Merle about a week ago, and you can find it somewhere inside this issue. He was truly one of the coolest people I’ve ever talked to, so I hope he gets well soon. Since my ipad finally succumbed to my bull in china shop sensibilities, I have been reading the first actual book I’ve picked up in a long time. Thom Jones, Cold Snap. Thom Jones may be one of the few authors

whose acknowledgments thank not only his dog, wife, and agent, but also Wyeth/Ayerst Laboratories and Stuart Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of Effexor and Elavil--"drugs so good they feel illegal." In typically manic fashion this collection of short stories draws portraits of boxers, Marines, and other assorted tough-guy types— even. Pitchman extraordinaire Ad Magic from The Pugilist at Rest returns, writing fraudulent but devastatingly effective direct-mail appeals for Global Aid even as he loses his mind on the combined effects of Dexedrine, paregoric, malaria, and a thumb smashed by Rwandan soldiers. It’s my kind of read (thanks Chad Evans, again) . I haven’t missed holding a book in my hands at all, since I entered the world of digital books, but I know I’ll be keeping Thom Jones on all my e-lists.

A Chat with Merle

by BRAD EVANS was like Jesus Christ was standing there. You’ve written so many great songs, which one are you most proud of? Well that would be like trying to single out children. But “Today I’d start loving you.” That would be the biggest moneymaker probably. But I’m proud of all of them. I really am. I love your new album “Working in Tennessee”? How as recording it different from past albums? Each album is a grouping of songs that have a rhyme and reason to the assembly and the continuity. We do spend time thinking about that. Working in Tennessee is on Vanguard, and already jumped into the charts, and I really enjoyed working on it. But it’s the same process, there are just a few different people in the room than their used to be.

If you were disappointed to hear that Merle Haggard had to cancel his Jan 17 performance at the Macon City Auditorium, Fear not. He’s coming back! The show has been rescheduled for April 25, 2012. All tickets purchased for the show will be honored. Anyone seeking a refund should contact their point of purchase. As a performer and songwriter, Merle Haggard was the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s, and he became one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield country scene. While his music remained hardcore country, he pushed the boundaries, like his idol Bob Wills, his music was a melting pot that drew from jazz, blues and folk. Throughout his career, Haggard has been a champion of the working man, largely due to his rough and tumble history. With 39 #1 hits, a stint in San Quentin and countless touring miles behind him, Merle took a few minutes out of his day to talk to publisher Brad Evans. On your album "I love Dixie blues" you covered several Emmett Miller songs, and dedicated the album to him. Were you aware that he was from Macon, and can you describe the influence his music has had on you, and American music in general? I did know that Emmett was from Macon. I hadn’t thought about that in a while, but now that you mention it, sure I did know that. He certainly didn’t just influence me. Most of us old timers, think of him as the father of Country Music, right along with Jimmy Rogers. He influenced people in all directions of music though, not just country. Have you read Nick Toches Book on him ‘Where Dead Voices Gather’? I haven’t. I haven’t even heard of it. I’d love to read that. What sort of guy was he? Well I’m sure you know he started out as a minstrel singer, who was on top of the world for a long time, but he died drunk, broke and alone at a train station here in Macon, which is a perfect country song, I guess. Yeah it is. Isn’t it true that he worked backstage at the grand ole opry for a while? Yes I believe he did. Once minstrel singing became taboo then he just became a sort of outcast. The Religious Right finally got him.

Don’t they get us all? Ha. Yeah they do don’t they. One way or another.

ple who were considered the meanest and the toughest people in America.

Why do you think you became a criminal? And how were you able to overcome that part of your life? Well, I was abandoned, when my father died. And I thought about things that were too old for me to be thinking about. I started wanting to help my mother to make a living. She didn’t want me to. I started trying to run from those damn guys who wanted me to go to school, and started doing some petty things, and I went to jail for that. I met some people in there who were criminals, and that really rubbed off on me, and pretty soon I was trying to be Clyde Barrow. My heroes were the wrong people. John Dillinger and people like that. I went the wrong direction, and went pretty damn hard. And I ended up in the big house when I was 20 years old. I had a series of things happen in there that sort of turned my life around.

That’s scary just hearing you say it. You better believe it. If that don’t make the hair on the back of your neck stand up then you likely don’t have no blood running through your veins.

What’s the worst memory you have of San Quentin? Sitting outside at 11 o’clock at night, looking at that place all lit up in there, chained to a man I didn’t know. He was as scared as I was. The prisoners were yelling obscenities at the bus, and you know you got to go in there and be with them. And you know they have nothing else to focus on but you. You are about to be thrown in with a group of peo-

Your best memory in prison besides getting out has to be seeing Johnny Cash Live at San Quentin, am I right? Well I’ve never assessed it like you just did, but yeah you are probably right, that probably was the best moment in San Quentin. But you know at the time I was not a huge Johnny Cash fan. I had a pretty good band in prison at the time. We sort of considered him to be sort of cornball. Bom Bom Bom, just straight up simple. HE was just too bland and straight up and down for us. So I was sort of wondering how he was going to compete with all the people in the variety show. There were all sorts of people there. Women taking their clothes off. Strippers and Dancers and some great blues players from San Francisco came up there. So Johnny Cash gets up there, and he doesn’t have a voice. He’s like ‘I played over there across the bay over here last night and I lost my voice.’ But he was able to take hold of 5000 men and mesmerize them with his charisma, and even to this day, I’ve never seen anything like it. It

Your friend Waylon said that Garth Brooks did for Country Music what Pantyhose did for finger F*cking. What do you think about the state of country music these days? Well. I think, Waylon got dumber with age. I don’t know. I love Waylon, but he was awful critical of different things. He just got grouchy. I love listening to Waylon and Willie and Johnny. They still set my ears to burning. I can’t stand perfect music. And it seems like that there are a bunch of producers that have taken charge of a city there in the south. And their charge is making perfect music. And they have a bunch of guys up there that you don’t know if they can sing or not because they are using them damn tuners. And you have to wait until you see them live to find out if they have talent. I think what Waylon meant by that statement was that somebody ought to be able to walk out on a stage with a guitar and put on a good show that people can enjoy. We don’t really need explosions to enjoy a concert do we? You obviously spent a lot of time with some of the best songwriters in country music. What are some of your favorite memories hanging out with folks like Willie and Waylon and Johnny? Willie and I did an album called Poncho and Lefty together and he did “Always on my Mind” and I did a solo album around that time that did really well. (Going where the Lonely Go) And you know during that time we had all these great players around us, and hell we wrote about 50 songs during that period. That’s a feat in itself. And for any of those songs to have stood the test of time, after all these years, it’s a really special feeling. To have so many songs that have stayed in people’s minds. It was just really neat being part of that. What’s next for you? Well I have my health to look after. Touring isn’t as easy as it used to be. But I enjoy it. They say what keeps moving keeps going, and what stays get’s rusty. I don’t want to get rusty. So I reckon I’m going to keep on going. 11thHourOnline.com

Ernest Butts Jr. working the mitts with a young up-and-comer.

The Montgomery Brothers are three of the most talked about young boxers at the Middle Georgia Boxing Club.

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT BISHOP RAYE AND THE MIDDLE GEORGIA BOXING CLUB - CHANGING LIVES ONE ROUND AT A TIME

When we first moved to Macon we spent probably too much time on the

back streets of town looking for chicken joints and meat and threes that would make us the softies we are today. One of our favorites was Honey Bears. Honey Bear’s was operated out of an old brick building on Seventh Street, and walking in the screen door was literally like walking into someone’s living room. The carpet was shag and the black Jesus painted on velvet. I could barely contain myself. I was there all the time. I sent a photographer to take some photos but he was almost shot by the owner. She actually made him delete the photos from his digital camera. The menu was handwritten and it didn’t matter what you ordered you just got what she made you, it was awesome. Anyway, across from Honey Bears, there was a building with portraits of boxers painted on its walls. It looked closed, and every time I tried a door, it was locked. We talked about it a lot, how there was probably some small society of folks, dedicated to that secret science, back there late at night hitting a heavy bag and sparring in some old and tattered ring. I pictured kids, working alongside some old beat up veteran, getting their footwork right, and leaving a lot of sweat on the floor in the process. I pictured a lot of great things happening in there and, as it turns out, I was right all along. Bishop Raye began his love affair with fighting around 1939, when as a young boy growing up in East Macon; he started going to a neighbor’s house that had built a ring in his back yard. “Back then you know, everything was Joe Lewis. He was the only black fighter that we had to root for, so everybody wanted to be like him. I know I did.” says Raye. They had no formal training, no real fitness regimen, a lot of times they just got in the ring and went at it. “It was sort of a way to simplify problems for those in the neighborhood, but once we left the ring, it was over.” Bishop would later join the Navy, where he boxed, and his first fight was in Atlantic City, New

Jersey, in 1946. Ray came back to Macon and started the Middle Georgia Boxing Club in 1999. That year it was at the Rosa Jackson Center, and a few years later they moved next door to Honey Bears. Just last year, the gym built out a space behind the Terminal Station in downtown Macon at 454 Sixth Street, a building owned by Newtown Macon. Thoughout the moves, the mission has been the same. Keep the kids off the streets and out of trouble. “That’s exactly what he’s done,” says Al Tillman, “He’s giving these kids an option to learn discipline through the sport of boxing, and that’s something that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.” That’s certainly been the case for trainer Earnest Butts Jr, who started boxing in South Macon as a kid. “Growing up in the drug infested area of South Macon, boxing was an outlet for me. My father was a boxer, he actually sparred Joe Lewis, so he was aware how powerful that outlet was. Being a boxer, and having that to work on kept me out of a whole mess of other things.” Butts would join the Army, where he was an All Army Boxer and in 1982 he boxed Pernell Sweatpea Whitikar, the two-time light weight champion. Whitikar would later become the welter weight champion. “That was the highlight of my career, getting to box Sweet Pea.” Butts would also get to the semi finals in the Olympic Trials during his career. Now Butts finds satisfaction in training kids at the Middle Georgia Boxing Club. “It’s a big deal for a kid to stand up and take this direction in their life. There is nobody in that ring but you. It’s a sport where you really find out your worth. And for all the kids who don’t make the basketball team or the football team, this is an option. If you get in here and work hard, you can be something in the ring.” All ages, male and female are welcome at the gym, as well as all experience levels. The membership fee is only $20 a month, kept so low because the gym is strictly run by volunteers. It has no paid employees. Even trainers like Butts and Rufus Beddingfield train the kids at no charge. On Thursday, January 26 a three-day boxing tournament will be taking place at the downtown club, which will be a qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Trials. Over 150 bouts will take place, in all age groups, and some of the greatest fighters in the Amatuer rankings will be there including Christine Nosari, a female boxer from Mercer University who has been making a name for herself on the circuit. Admission for the event will be 10 dollars, and kids under 10 will be free, paid for by Unity-N-Community. “Every state hosts this event. And a lot of people don’t realize how big of a deal it really is” says Butts, “The winner out of this tournament represents the state of Georgia in Nationals. They will be compensated to go to the Nationals in Colorado. And if they do well they get to go to an Olympic trial, where they have a chance to actually make the team. Now wouldn’t that be a big day for Macon?” BY BRAD EVANS PHOTOS ADAM SMITH

WHERE WILL YOU BE WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL? ENJOY ALL THE BEER AND FOOD YOU WANT WITHOUT HAVING TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF AT BEARFOOT TAVERN, LOCO’S, WILD WING CAFE OR CJ’S SPORTS BAR!

Chevrolet Gets Fans To Choose Super Bowl Spots Warner Robins filmmaker makes final cut - View to Win up to $10K MSN and Chevrolet held a 30-second commercial contest in which aspiring film makers could submit their work for a chance at their commercial airing during the 2012 Super Bowl. Warner Robins native Brian Ezeike was one such lucky finalist, chosen from hundreds and one of fifteen from the United States, to compete in the online competition. General Motors is planning to have five 30-second spots on Feb. 5, one of which will go to the winner of this competition. Ad time has been selling for upward of $3.5 million for a 30-second space, per analysts, but companies with multiple spots usually pay a lower bundle rate. The Chevy Super Bowl event, under a “Chevrolet Route 66” umbrella, is running now through Jan. 26, 2012. After that, Chevy execs will look at the films that have received the most views to help make their final selection. Brian's video, titled "Miss Van der Volt" already has over 12,000 views. But every view, "thumbs up" and share counts toward the popularity of his submission. Unfortunately, Chevrolet reserves the right to choose their fave commercial to air during the Super Bowl, but having the most votes couldn't hurt. Chevy is also sweetening the deal with a $15,000 prize purse for visitors to their site that registers, shares and votes for their favorite submission. This contest asks visitors to register, submit an inspiring essay, and watch and share films for a chance

to win a portion of a $15,000 purse prize. All this for simply sharing films with friends, submitting an inspiring essay on where you would like to drive, and climbing the website leaderboard. Brian's video got a shout out on Forbes.com, the author saying, "So far, the most favored spot features a smoosh-faced bulldog taking a fantasy ride in a Camaro. Given the fact that animal commercials are a Super Bowl cliché, the spot comes up a yawn. Instead, click on “Spy Thriller” or try the zaftig “Miss Van Der Volt”. Check out and share Brian's video and browse thru dozens more by visiting http://chevroletroute66.msn.com

The 8-piece indie-dance group has wowed crowds around the United States with their artistic and creative approach to modern pop. They’ve shared stages with everyone from Grace Potter & The Nocturnals to Fitz and The Tantrums and recently made an impressive performance at Bear Creek Music Festival. Catch them at the CCT on February 9th with JuBee & The Morning After, Baby Baby, and Triathalon. Scene writer Sean Pritchard had a chance to ask the Vermont-based band a few questions before their Macon engagement. Listen up below. I first heard about you all after friends came back from Grand Points North raving about your set and what a "oddly entertaining" group they had discovered. What relationship do you guys have with Grace & her band that linked you up with the fest? We are both Vermont-born bands and Kalmia and Grace are VT bred divas. We both developed a lot of our early sound in Burlington. Apparently Grace new a lot of the words to most our songs so thats really awesome! Our old bass player did a tour w/ Grace + I used to play with Benny their guitar player a bit. It's a family… sorta! I noticed that you all have gone through a number of members in the past. Is the band more so a collective of musicians that cycle in and out or is the current line up firmly set in place? Current line-up is pretty firm. We're all down! That being said, what are the methods to how you all compose and write your music? Do Alex & Kalmia approach the rest of the band with an idea and then it's expanded upon or do you all each have a fairly broad input on each track? It varies but largely Kalmia and I write most of the stuff at home and occasionally in the studio. Everything that touches the band in rehearsal or stage gets expanded upon and develops though. All the guys are pretty sick at their instruments and creative. How many times have you all played in Georgia and do you find that there are any noticeable differences in the audiences in the South than elsewhere in the county? We've played in Georgia once. Haven't played the south enough to site the differences. The one show we played was with Baby Baby at Drunken Unicorn and it was an awesome, high-energy grungy-punky vibe that felt pretty right. We were at this fest in VA and around all the campfires people were shredding bluegrass guitar and singing beautiful country-folk songs. Seemed like everyone in the audience had ears and could play guitar! There's a clear influence from groups like Talking Heads and the rest of the '70s-'80s new wave crowd, as well as a

more recent likening to Dirty Projectors and TuNe-YaRds. Who would you cite as an influence that your listeners might now expect? Hard to say. I think we sort of stay tapped in w/o copying any style from any one artist or movement. Been listening to a lot of gangster rap from the late 80s recently. It's simultaneously blowing my mind and referring me back to my earlier musical funk and soul loves like James Brown. Rubblebucket: Fronted by the honey-voiced Kalmia Traver (who also pulls sax duties, in addition to the occasional badass whistling solo), Rubblebucket aren’t your average indie-rock/jam line-up, sporting trumpet, trombone, and a full-time percussionist. And they put the added muscle to good use—the songs on their sophomore LP (but might as well be debut), Omega La La, are joyous jungles of worldly pop-funk, instrumentally rich but catchy enough to asskick Katy Perry off the pop charts. - PASTE MAGAZINE

You all were a staple on the festival circuit last year. What can be expected in 2012 that you all are looking forward to? Right now Neil from Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! is in the common area of my apt making 'robot envelopes' (for ease of packing) for these 14ft robot puppets. Also working on a large 'love tunnel' and audio-reactive light-up vests for the whole band. Oh, and new music! As far as bookings not sure what the full plate is going to be… but looking forward to our first Miami performance at the Grassroots Festival. Lastly, does Rubblebucket believe in the Mayan predictions, and if so, where will your end of the world party be? Yes but leaning towards the expansion of consciousness aspect of their prediction… hopefully it manifests for the better and its not just some weird Facebook blurring. If the flood-gates start opening though it would be sweet to have a big Burning Manesque community party on the top a mountain surrounded in a rich self-sustaining eco-system. It's the year of the Dragon though… good things!!!

Named in honor of Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass Music,” Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Their airtight harmonies, razor sharp arrangements, and on-stage rapport make them audience favorites across the United States and Canada. Based in Minnesota, the group plays an average of 125 shows a year at major venues and festivals, frequently for nonbluegrass audiences! Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds and tastes, combining for a very unique ensemble sound. Their paths crossed through the music of Bill Monroe so they like to say they had a “Monroe Crossing.”

The 8-piece indie-dance group has wowed crowds around the United States with their artistic and creative approach to modern pop. They’ve shared stages with everyone from Grace Potter & The Nocturnals to Fitz and The Tantrums. Catch them at the CCT on February 9th with JuBee & The Morning After, Baby Baby, and Triathalon.

Netherfriends @ the 567 Center

THUR, JAN 26

Yarn @ The Rookery A six-piece New York band, whos music explodes with rock 'n' roll, gospel, country, Celtic and more. Most of the songs are originals, but they also reportedly do a phenomenal cover of Lou Reed's classic "Walk on the Wild Side." The band has a new album out in March, just in time to showcase at SXSW in Austin, TX. Go check them out.

Jeff Sipe @ Huds He is a rock and jazz fusion drummer, however, he is proficient in many other styles which he has demonstrated in his decades of drumming. He is a founding member of Aquarium Rescue Unit along with Col. Bruce Hampton. He also played with the self-applied Cajun Slamgrass Band Leftover Salmon and in the Zambiland Orchestra, an experimental big band featuring members of Phish, Widespread Panic and others.

FRI, JAN 27

Netherfriends @ 567 Center Chicago's Netherfriends are a young trio that plays catchy synth-pop with perhaps a dash of psych (if psych weren't so serious all the time) and a little bit of hazy laid-back dreaming (like the Animal Collective/Panda Bear thing). Netherfriends have recently played shows with Maps & Atlases, Wye Oak, and Pattern Is Movement. Considering all the buzz dream-pop is getting these days, it seems only natural Netherfriends will be able to ride that wave. Opening acts include Macon’s own Amy Godwin and Argonauts.

Mobile Slim Band @ The Bird airtight harmonies, razor sharp arrangements, and on-stage rapport make them audience favorites across the United States and Canada.

Tedo Stone @ The Hummingbird Tedo Stone’s music never ceases to fuse throwback sounds (primarily of the 1960’s) with a keen sense of contemporary resonance. In fact, his seemingly effortless eclecticism perhaps stands out most, as he places psychedelic rock, soul, blues, country, and even sometimes electronic music all under one roof. Based out of Atlanta, band members include Maconites Matt Moncrief and Alex Scarborough along with Billy Lyons.

Honeyblue @ The Rookery

SAT, JAN 28

Jeremy Johnson & Friends @ CJ’s Sports Bar While not touring with his band Saint Francis, Jeremy likes to get together with some of his other local musician friends and rock a stage. This will happen tonight.

Honeyblue @ The Rookery Call it "Garage Country." Honey Blue takes the passion and rawness of garage rock and applies it to a country music landscape of sound. Hailing from St. Simons Island GA, they were voted "Best Local Band" for the second consecutive year.

EG Kight @ The Opening Act A veteran of the road, EG Kight has headlined at clubs and festivals, bringing her diverse musical menu to the fans in cities across America and in Europe. Kight continues to tour, as a solo and with a band, and has performed with a symphony orchestra, and on NPR’s famed "A Prairie Home Companion“. Her performance of “I’m New At This” from that NPR show was later re-broadcast, as part of the “Listener’s Choice” program. Blues at it’s best, and this is your best chance to see EG for free, in a non-smoking, listening-room setting. 7:30pm.

SAT, FEB 4

Barry Darnell & the Mobile Slim Band @ The Hummingbird Mobile Slim was born to a boogie-woogie ivory-tickling mother and a construction-working harmonica-playing father in the segregated Southern gulf coast. He eventually moved to Georgia, where he played juke joints and honky tonks all over the Southeast, and sang for spare change on the streets of Underground Atlanta. He continues his family legacy with a high-energy, entertaining set of the blues.

I

rarely try to ever gloat or be openly proud about the things that I do but I felt like I could make an exception this once. I've been working events and booking shows around Macon for over 4 years now. It's been amazing at times and heartbreaking (and bank breaking) at others, but things have always slowly progressed. I've learned that if you've got a long term plan for being in Macon, you've got to take initiative, but you've also got to have the patience of a saint. I remember this city 10 years ago and we've made incredible progress since then. Fortunately for me, being patient has paid off and I've wound up taking a position as an Event Coordinator with the Cherry Blossom Festival and I couldn't be happier. While its a step away from booking bands you've never heard of at places that don't sell alcohol or allow you to smoke inside, it is an opportunity to strengthen my skills, network within our community, and work with a group of people that are truly dedicated to making our city a place that is as enjoyable to live in as it is to visit. This year marks the festival's 30th Anniversary so you can bet it will be one to remember. I'll try to keep you updated on all things pink when I can. It's actually far more interesting than I imagined.

Jaimoe's Jasssz Band is stopping in Macon on Tuesday the 24th for a Big House Benefit. They'll be filling the Douglas Theatre with their soulfully inspired rhythms and eclectic improvisations, so for any jazz fans around town, you don't want to miss this. If you aren't familiar with Jaimoe, he is one of the original members of the Allman Brother's Band and has played with the likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and many more. Scoots Lyndon let me know I would be doing myself a favor if I checked this out, so that's the plan. On Thursday the 26th, Gateway Macon will be announcing the finalist for their Macon Mogul Competition! This unique and exciting program was created to strengthen and develop Macon as a community of arts, culture, and business and after weeks of meetings and presentations, they have a winner picked. This is taking place at the Capitol Theatre and while I don't know an exact time, you can check out their Facebook or Twitter for more information. I'm extremely eager to see what they've come up with. Taking The Arts Seriously will also be taking place later that evening around 5:30 at The 567 Center. If you're a musician, painter, designer, writer or general supporter of all things art, you should try to head down. They'll have guest speakers and will be presenting information about ways to improve and promote arts throughout our city. The next night, Macon gets a visit from Netherfriends, a one man do-it-all artist who has been around America and Europe more times in the past few years than you would probably care to. After returning from a highly successful European tour, Shawn Rosenblatt (who's music has received likening to Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, and Dirty Projectors), decided to skip going back to Chicago and keep touring the States. He'll be joined by Pressed And, an electronic duo that's been creating a viral buzz through their incredibly odd and psychedelic music videos, as well as Macon's sweetheart Amy Godwin and a newer group of Maconite's via Athens, Argonauts. Four very different styles on one stage for only five dollars at the 567 Center. The show starts at 7:30 and should be over to give you plenty of time to head down to The Hummingbird for Tedo Stone and Betsy Kingston & The Crowns. On Saturday, if you feel like making a road trip, head up to Milledgeville and go out on the town there. As one of the most hyped independent artists of 2011, Reptar started playing at parties around Athens and have wound up gracing the stage at festivals like Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza and many more. They'll be playing at Amici's and are sure to pull a great crowd. There might even be the chance that they'll be playing a somewhat secret show in Macon sometime in February… The following week, get down to the Mulberry Street Market if you haven't. I randomly bumped into Rocking Chair Ranch's co-owner Eric at Roasted and we talked about the whole operation that they're running. Rookery and Roasted both feature menu items with their beef and they're both delicious. You can buy personal quantity packages at the Market, along with dozens of other locally based farms and crafts booths. That weekend is First Friday so make sure to get downtown, there are things going on just about everywhere. I know that Barry Darnell & The Mobile Slim band are going to be at The Bird on Saturday and my friends in WoolFolk have wound up opening up for them. Check them out if you enjoy Futurebirds, Wilco, or Avett Brothers. These guys are just making their introduction to Macon but have played a few house shows and opening slots at The 567 but they put on a great show and are well worth seeing. Here's just a few things you can be looking forward to the next few weeks: Feb 1st - 4th - Civic Club presents "Livin' The Dream" @ The Grand Opera House Thursday, Feb 9th - Rubblebucket w/ JuBee & The Morning After, Baby Baby, and Triathalon @ Capitol Theatre Friday, Feb 10th - Saint Frances (album preview show) @ The Hummingbird Saturday, Feb 11th - Heyrocco w/ Nelson the Hippo & Wylie @ The Rookery Saturday, Feb 11th - A Night at The 567 @ The 567 Center Monday, Feb 13th - Rock of Ages @ The Grand Opera House Saturday, Feb 24th - Sugar Virus 20th Anniversary show @ The 567 Center

SEEING RED

The Future of the GOP & the Upcoming General Election We have finally gotten into 2012 and are right at the beginning of the primary season with the Iowa Caucuses behind us, the New Hampshire primary yielded little surprises and the South Carolina Primary lurks in the shadows of the very near future. BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

he field of candidates has predictably dwindled and will continue skinnying down until we are left with our nominee to run against Obama. Tim Pawlenty was the first casualty of Iowa after the Ames Straw Poll, followed by Herman Cain who withdrew amidst false charges of sexual misconduct, Gary Johnson left the Republican race to tilt at a Libertarian windmill, and Michele Bachmann quit when she drew less than exciting numbers in the Iowa Caucuses. I say Rick Perry will be the next victim after the South Carolina primary, followed by Jon Huntsman after Florida, leaving us with Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, most of which will remain until the bitter end. So where does that leave our party as the whole Presidential sweepstakes roars into the Palmetto state? Mitt Romney has been the steady candidate throughout this topsy-turvy contest that would make Captain Ahab seasick with all its' ups and downs. He's consistently been polling around the 25-35% mark and is at times a very strong frontrunner and at other times shows the strength of a wallflower at the prom. Although I would certainly support his candidacy should he get the nomination, I feel that his nomination for our party is a mistake. Governor Romney is a throwback to some of our failed candidates who got the nomination either because they were a 'good soldier' who had run for the nomination before and lost (Bob Dole, John McCain, George H.W.

T

Gadd’s

Bush) or they would be able to 'bring the independents to the party'. (Dole, McCain and Bush the Elder still fit the mold but you can now add Gerald Ford into it the cast.) Governor Romney falls into both catagories as well. As Yogi Berra would say, "It's like deja vu all over again." My opinion is that the strongest candidate that the Republican Party could field would be the most Conservative one; the one who appeals to the real base of the party and not the fringe as Ron Paul does. This candidate would be one who would be more in the image of Republicans who actually won the White House in recent years: Bush the Younger and Ronald Reagan, both of whom if you recall your history, were called too right wing and too volatile and that they could in no way capture those elusive independents that seem to always be out there. Let me tell you a little secret: Those elusive independents are part of the massive number of unemployed workers who are fed up with President Obama just as much as the solid base of the Republican Party. Playtime is over now that Governor Romney has won both Iowa and New Hampshire. The real race begins on January 21st when our neighbors in South Carolina pick a Conservative choice amidst the chaff. In my past columns I have made it very clear that I have been hoping that choice would be first Herman Cain and now former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and I still feel that way, but I will say that our party needs to get behind one Conservative and ride him all the way to The White House while leaving the others that have little chance behind. I'm certainly not for calling names and labeling the other candidates as this

always leaves a bitter taste in a failed candidates' supporters mouth, however the Conservativelychallenged candidates need to move on and hope that they will at least garner a Vice-Presidential nod as "Second Banana" on the future ticket as Bush the Elder did in 1980. For the record there is only one RINO (Republican In Name Only) in the Presidential race as Texas Congressman Ron Paul has certainly proved himself to be a Libertarian or Constitution Party member more so than as a member of the GOP. Further, Congressman Paul and a great many of his supporters are completely bastardizing the Republican Party as they have absolutely no plans to support anyone with the exception of the good doctor, yet want to try

right now that if you ask most of Congressman Paul's supporters right now if they would vote for or help the GOP nominee if it were anyone other than the Congressman, you would get a flat NO. Then you would get preached to about the virtue of principle over party. It's standard spiel from the Ron Paul playbook. If the GOP is to beat President Obama in November, we will be doing it without their help. Get used to it as nothing that we do or say to welcome them or alienate them will change their collective minds. The future of our party rests with the Conservative base who believe that abortion is wrong, taxation in its' current state is unjust, government is too big and is the problem not the solution, Israel is our friend and Hamas, the PLO,

and infiltrate the rank and file by insisting that he and they are the only true Conservatives out there and that the party has left them. Notice I said a good many...Not all. There are many of Congressman Paul's supporters that truly think he's a Conservative alternative to the rest of the field. I hope they wake up before it's too late. I've heard more than once that we need to have a detente' or a peaceful coexistence with Paul and his supporters in fear that he may run as a 3rd party candidate or that they will do nothing to help the GOP comes November. I can tell you

Muslim Brotherhood, Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are our enemies, a strong offense is a good defense when it comes to foreign policy, anchor babies are precious gifts from our Creator but are nonetheless not our responsibility to spend tax payer money on and that our borders should be secure by any reasonable means, and that marriage should be between a man and a woman. If you agreed with most of that, to paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy, "You may be a Conservative Republican."

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 wrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later con4 Cts Felony Murder firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame. For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
