hanks to everyone who braved the cold at the first annual Fly South Festival this past weekend. We couldn’t have asked for more as the first year event saw a huge crowd gather at Luther Williams Field despite record lows. The venue was beautiful, the sound was great, and the bands blew us all away. It’s not every day talent like that gathers in Macon Georgia, and the folks at Bragg Jam couldn’t be happier that we got to put such a great event together. Now, it’s time to begin work on the annual July bar crawl. Wow. This issue will take us thru Christmas, and on December 28 you’ll see the list of nominees in the paper for 2009’s Reader’s Choice Awards. As always, plenty of surprises are in store for the actual awards show. It will be a night filled with music, laughter, and plenty of golden baby dolls. We also are launching a partnership with the Community Foundation of

Central Georgia this issue called The Superfund. We’ve always had to pinch pennies, and are fine with the fact that may never change, but through many talks with the good folks at CFCG, we came up with a way for everyone to give, even if it’s just the change in their pockets. The Superfund is a way for a lot of people to give a little bit of money to worthy causes in our community. If we can get 200 people in our city to pledge just $10 bucks a month we’ll be able to give away almost $25,000 a year. All of this can easily be done through our a safe, secure website and you can find the link at 11thhouronline.com. This year, we decided to make the beneficiaries the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Cox Capitol Theatre. Read how to be a part inside on page 4. It doesn’t take a lot to make a difference. And I think it’s the time of year when making a difference should be weighing on our minds.

ittle Money Big Results. That’s the idea behind The Superfund, created by The 11th Hour, and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. Crowdfunding describes the collective cooperation, attention and trust by people who network and pool their money together, usually via the Internet, in order to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. This is exactly what the Superfund aims to do. We all want to make our community a better place to be, and each year, the readers of the 11th Hour will identify two causes that will benefit from a pool of money that we, as a community, create. The idea is that even if we don’t have thousands of dollars to give to causes we believe in, we can pool just the change in our pockets together and make a huge difference. If 200 people commit to give just $10 a month to this fund, we would have $24,000 a year to give away. “The Superfund is an innovative way to involve citizens in philanthropy, and use the power of many small gifts to make a big impact!” says Kathryn Dennis, President of CFCG, “ The Community Foundation of Central Georgia is honored to partner with the 11th Hour, its readers, and the citizens of Macon to collectively make our community a better place to live .” This fund gives you the opportunity to give a small amount, on a monthly basis to causes that help improve the quality of life in Macon, Georgia, through a safe and secure website hosted by the Community Foundation. Go to www.11thhouronline.com to join today. Your contributions for January 1, 2010 - January 2011 will support the following organizations: Cox Capitol Theatre Cox Capitol Theatre is a symbol of community and a cornerstone in the revitalization effort of downtown Macon. They present a diverse programming that attracts a varied audience, including family and classic film; local, regional and national musical artists; and live theatre offered in a unique dinner theatre setting. The Capitol also partners with other organizations that share our vision of a vibrant downtown – presenting concerts with the Big House Foundation and serving as a venue for The Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam.

The theatre is beautifully restored – and expensive to operate and maintain. They have recently launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of 1.3 million dollars to fund façade improvements, equipment upgrades, stage and lighting enhancement, kitchen expansion as well as provide operational support and pay off the original renovation loan. Ticket income accounts for less than one quarter of total income and is supplemented by income from private rentals. Fundraisers and contributions from individuals, corporations and foundation grants fund almost half of the theatre’s expenses. Your donation to the Super Fund helps the Capitol Theatre keep the doors open, the projector running, and the stage rocking. Thanks for your support. Georgia Music Hall of Fame The Georgia Music Hall of Fame preserves and interprets the state’s rich music heritage through programs of preservation, education, exhibition and performance. Located in the heart of downtown Macon, the museum shares the stories of over 100 inductees. As steward of these legacies, the Music Hall of Fame welcomes visitors from all over the world to Macon and provides educational programs for students of all ages. “The Georgia Music Hall of Fame belongs to Macon, Georgia, and if locals continue to take ownership, we can make downtown rock.” Says Lisa Love, Director of the Hall of Fame. “Join us in proving to those Atlantans who have so ungraciously dissed Macon just how deeply this community cares about music and this museum.” The State of Georgia has provided generous financial support to the development and upkeep of the Music Hall of Fame in Macon since it opened in 1996. That funding, however, has been reduced significantly in the past two years. Now, more than ever, memberships and private contributions provide vital support necessary to sustain the museum and grow its programs, such as MIKE, Music in Kids Education, and the Otis Redding Singer/Songwriter Camp for ages 12-17 each June. - Brad Evans

C

hristmas does not have to be perfect. Yet we are seduced by the message that you can buy or receive the perfect gift, or serve or eat the perfect meal, or be surrounded by the perfect loving family, or be perfectly loving and tranquil ourselves. Christmas does not have to be completely merry and bright. The key player in Luke’s birth narrative is Mary and that first Christmas had to be traumatic on many levels for her. We have a tendency to superimpose our mistaken impressions of her as we look back in time. We see her as peaceful, beatific, dressed in pastels (usually light blue). The accuracy of our perception should be questioned. Here we have an unexplained teenage pregnancy and an engagement that nearly ended. My guess is that some of those close to Mary thought she was loony because she was talking with angels. Then she had to make an uncomfortable trip to Bethlehem, could not find a room, gave birth in a barn, and had to flee to Egypt. Easy? Peaceful? Merry? Bright? No way! Mary is not asked to provide the perfect environment for the birth of Jesus. All God asked of Mary is her consent: she is asked to place herself in God’s hands, give God room to work, make herself available to whatever God is planning. She does not hide her surprise; she does not suppress her questions. She wonders out loud what God could possibly have in mind by asking her to serve under these conditions. And then…. And then… And then… she says, “Yes.” The “yes” did not turn out as she expected. It never does. Every “yes” involves complications, trouble, misunderstandings, hard work, hurt feelings, successes, and failures. And sometimes “yes” brings us to a point of anguish. We are not called to wrestle out of the chaos of our lives the perfect family Christmas, or the perfect spiritual moment, or even the perfect contemplative emptiness in which to welcome God. Our calling is more like Mary’s: to wonder what God could possibly have in mind, and then to say “Yes” and take what comes.

The florescent lights of that big austere room, Gave luster of midday to the object tumbling in, When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a big metal bench bouncing in to a cheer

Now Anita! Now Elaine! Now Rick! Now Tom!, Now Henry! Now Leroy! Let’s get it done!, To the top of Cherry Street! To the front of The Dempsey!, Get the bench back in front and I’ll feel much more Merry! As the dry leaves that before a wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle mount to the sky, So down to the Dempsey the coursers they flew, With the bench in tow and an extra one too Then in a twinkling I heard on City Hall roof, Some prancing and pawing and the sound of “woof woof”, As I looked out the door and was turning around, Here came AC pup running with a bound He was dressed all in fur since of course he’s a dog, He brought not a list but a heavy book log, It was his gift list, he asked us to look, Nearly 2,000 names long, friends made on Facebook But suddenly I heard heavy boots on the ground, An army I thought so I turned

right around, The Chief of Police was leading his troops, While a Sgt. named Draper was staging a coup

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work, He placed out a ballot box then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his tattoos, He called for a union vote along with their dues Again came the leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, They met with an obstacle, they mounted to the sky, The hail and the fury, the thunder and the storm, It came with a vengeance and Johnny, he was gone The lightening by the sidewalk in front of City Hall, Struck the Christmas tree broadside and caused it to fall, It fell on our torch, it burst into flame, And we had no EMA director, oh what a shame Then up pulled a driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be Mayor Reich, More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name Now Thomas, now Marvin, now Mike, now Ben, There’s a crisis in Macon thanks to City Council whim, On Tom, on Pope, on Barbara and Gene, We’ll settle this ourselves you’ll see what I mean He wasn’t chubby or plump, but still a right jolly elf, And I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself, A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread He spoke not a word but went straight to his work, He filled the EMA Director position straight by the book, He confounded City Council who before had been a bully, His pick was none other than Captain Chelsey Sully Then he sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle, But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sight, Merry Christmas to all, and to Macon a safe night! (adapted from Clement Moore’s poem T,was the Night Before Christmas)

CALENDAR “boughs of holly” reflect the English tradition. In the American South, holly was supplemented with other indigenous evergreens, among them pine, cedar, magnolia and smilax. Evergreens were used for Christmas decorating at a time of year when flowers were scarce. These greens were gathered the old-fashioned way by going to the woods and searching out just the right boughs, branches, and sprigs to give the house its festive air for this most festive season. Christmas Tours are $10 Adults; $9 Seniors (55+) and Military; $6 Students.

First New Year’s Eve Celebration Downtown Cherry Blossom Ball Drop, Street Party & more

N

ewTown Macon announced plans that First Friday in January will be celebrated on December 31st – New Year’s Eve – in an effort to draw more people downtown to ring in the New Year. Therefore, New Year’s Eve will be First Friday at Midnight. First Friday at Midnight, presented by Robins Federal, will feature the Cherry Blossom Ball Drop in the intersection of Cherry and Third Streets in Downtown Macon. The ball, made of metal blossoms with pink lights, is six feet in diameter and will descend from a 30 foot tower counting down to midnight. With the roads closed, the streets of Downtown will be turned into a street party with entertainment by Party Man Productions, fully equipped with lights, video screens and a variety of music. “New York City has a ball drop, Atlanta has the peach drop” says Karen Jordan Lambert, President and CEO of the Cherry Blossom Festival, “And now Macon has the Cherry Blossom Ball Drop.”

Macon, is the Cherry Blossom Capital of the world with more Yoshino Cherry trees than any other city in the worl. With the Cherry Blossom Ball Drop, Macon is not only partying pink in March, but the whole year long. Details of the First Friday at Midnight event and Ball Drop can be found at www.cherryblossomballdrop.com. First Friday has quickly become a downtown tradition. On the first Friday of every month downtown businesses, restaurants, and bars are open late and have a variety of specials for attendees. Local Bluesman Robert Lee Coleman was an original guitarist for James Brown and his JB’s. He still has that soul in his wrist, but can wail the blues too. Until the end of 1972, Coleman toured & recorded with Brown. He can be heard on three of Brown's albums:"Hot Pants", on which Coleman was solely responsible for the guitar groove on the title track; "Revolution of the Mind", recorded live at the Apollo Theater in NYC; & the song 'Make It Funky' from the "Soul Classics" LP. And makin’ it funky is what Coleman still does.

The Lloyd Dobler Effect (LDE) has been around for more than 8 years, having toured over forty states and thirteen countries. The band has an impressive list of accomplishments including headlining multiple international Armed Forces Entertainment tours. LDE has gained a stellar reputation on the national college circuit and live worldwide music scene as the next great band to watch. They have performed on the same bill with such notable artists as Jane's Addiction, Eminem, The Strokes, Good Charlotte, The Roots, Jack Johnson, and 3rd Eye Blind, to name a few.

The term "living legend" gets thrown around quite a bit, but it actually applies to Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin. The magical harmonies and depth of feeling found on Louvin Brothers recordings of the 50's and 60's inspired a new generation of musicians, firmly establishing the Louvins' stature as one of the most influential duos in country music history. In 2006, the Tompkins Square label reached out to Charlie about making his first new studio album in over ten years. Guests on the album include Elvis Costello, George Jones, Jeff Tweedy, Tom T. Hall, Bright Eyes, and more. This is big time for Macon.

Come Hear... The Red Swill with Come On Go with Us @ The Hummingbird

Fun Good Time Front Porch Pickin Music by the likes of one of Macon’s best musicians and Songwriters, Jared Wright. Typical country references to San Antone, intonations that recall Appalachian bluegrass and beautifully flowing creek melodies give a disorienting feeling. “Confusion doesn’t surprise me,” says lead singer and primary songwriter, Jared Wright. “My influences come from all over.”

Friday, 12/11

The Mighty McFly @ EL Azteca

Mighty McFly is one of the best unsigned original bands in the USA. They are overwhelmingly entertaining to watch and also some of the best musicians to be found anywhere. They are influenced by Queen, Van Halen, Journey, Prince, Sly & the Family Stone, among others.

Saturday, 12/12

The Scott Little Band with Rusty Swinger @ The Hummingbird

An accident? Maybe so, but from his debut release "Storyteller" to his latest "Living With the Truth", Scott lets us know that he's mastered the craft. The title alone tells you that sometimes life isn't always what it should be - but it makes us who we are. Songs like "High Life" offer that feeling of knowing when it's right, while "Sunday Night on Broadway" takes you to the depths of loneliness, and "Little Bit of Rain" - an emotional duet with Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls - gives you that one shred of hope that things will always get better.

Robert Lee Coleman @ Locos

EG Kight @ The Rookery

T and P are a four piece indie/showgaze band based out of Atlanta and Athens Ga. whom started playing late January of 2009, a collection of deceased local indie bands that graced Columbus Gab, they play indie rock at it’s finest See Editor’s Picks, above.

Ashutto Mirra @ Rivalry’s

Ashutto Mirra is an alternative rock group based out of Athens. This four member group consists of Scott Rainwater (lead vocals, guitar), Josh Birmingham (drums, vocals), Pat Yoe (bass), and Doyle Williams (guitar). Ashutto Mirra records and performs original songs that are intelligently written, well arranged, and always rockin’. Ashutto Mirra is currently recording an album at Athens based, Shade Tree Studios.

Larry G Hudson @ Polly’s Upstairs Bar

He used to cut Merle’s hair, but he had some serious hits on Music Row back in the day, and he’s a good a guitar picker as there is in this town. Fun, original , outlaw country good time music.

Plainfield Project @ Wild Wing Café

“This newly-established rock/reggae/funk band must have earned a ton of new fans really quickly with those gigs at O'Malley's and along King Street this winter; featuring singer/guitarist (and

Jeremy Johnson @ CJ’s

Part of St. Francis, Jeremy Johnson is as good a guitar picker and a singer as they come. He’s got great covers, great originals, and is great to lay back and listen too. An early show with Georgia songbird EG starts at 8pm. EG has been nominated for six Blues Music Awards, twice for Song Of The Year. Two of her songs landed on Koko Taylor’s Grammy®-nominated albums, and three can be found on Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women’s recent release.

Saturday, 12/19

Diane Durrett @ Rivalry’s

She’s good. She’s damn good.” Sting’s summation of his duet with singer songwriter Diane Durrett speaks for anyone who’s ever heard her perform. A Memphis reporter once wrote that “If you don’t go see her she may just come see you!” With a blend of raw soulful vocals, sultry tones and strong original songs Durrett has sung with or opened for Sting, Tina Turner, Delbert McClinton, The Indigo Girls, Faith Hill, Patty Loveless, Gregg Allman and Derek Trucks.

OldStar Featuring Shane Bridges @ Wild Wing Café

Shane Bridges, after bangin on the door to getting huge with Acoustic Workshop started Oldstar, which gained attention in Nashville for him as a songwriter. It’s a more laidback, more jayhawks kind of vibe , that we can’t wait to hear again.

New Year’s Eve

Radio Cult @Wild Wing Café

Do you miss the days when it was OK to wear leg warmers and jelly shoes? Well, actually, neither do we! ...but we do miss cheesy $10 videos on MTV, Flock of Seagulls hair styles and music that was FUN! Radio Cult is here to rock out 80s style! They do it all!

Random Family Records Presents @ The Cox Capitol Theatre

The best thing about this city is its people and on New Year's Eve this year, we're going to kick 2009 out the door with a big ol' celebration of self. Imagine knowing in high school what you know now and imagine then being in high school without having to go to classes. There'll be music, but it won't be a concert. There'll be some dancing, but it won't be a nightclub. There'll be partying but it won't just be a party; it'll be an event.

Project 77 @ 20s Pub

This group of local musicians plays all your classic rock favorites,, and they do it well. Get your dancing shoes on because this is going to be one fun new years eve.

Col Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance @ The Hummingbird

Col. Bruce has been making music since he formed his first band in 1963 an he’s been in constant motion ever since leaving a trail of memorable live performances with his many bands, including The Late Bronze Age and The Aquarium Rescue Unit. Along the way he appeared in the movie "Sling Blade" and starred in Mike Gordon's cult classic "Outside Out" as a mystical guitar 'out'structor. Since 2006, The Colonel has been playing a unique blend of blues and jazz with his band Col. Bruce & The Quark Alliance, featuring Kris Dale (bass), Perry Osborn (guitar) and Duane Trucks (drums). MUSIC

100% DIY, from his one-man band to home recording Influences? This is a style that I learned from many of the blues greats, such as delta bluesmen Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, as well as Hill Country Blues artists like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, not to mention countless others, such as the distinctive slide sound of Mississippi Fred McDowell, and the tribal rhythms of Bo Diddly. Bluegrass and country have also had a strong influence on me, with their fast fingerpicking styles. As a teenager, I was really into hard rock, metal, and punk rock, and those elements definitely surface in my music, sometimes giving it an edge, and sometimes taking over entirely. At shows, I play a variety of genres, I mean, who only wants to do one thing? …not me, obviously. I want to do lots of things, some of them all-at-once.

Mississippi John Doude performs as a one-man-band, playing drums with his feet, guitar with his hands, and singing, talking, and playing harmonica with his mouth. His style of finger-picking enables him to play bass, and rythym or lead simultaneously, so the guitar is usually doing 2 parts at once.

Describe Your Sound? “Outlaw country meets juke joint trance” because I do a lot of story songs and murder ballads, as well as quite a bit of trance blues. Lately my music has taken more of a riff rock route, though, …kind of like some hillbilly Black Sabbath. What got you into music? I come from a musical family, and I have loved playing music, since I was a child. As I got into my 30’s, I began to realize that most of the music that I really connected with, all had that same driving beat, …that foot-stomping on the

porch kind of feel, and when I inherited a set of drums, I started working with the kick drum and hi-hat while playing guitar, and voila, a little baby one-man-band was born!

What do you enjoy about Middle GA’s music scene? I enjoy living in, and playing in Middle Georgia because there is such a rich musical heritage around here, and Macon is one of my favorite places to play in the entire Southeast. The people are usually super nice, and the downtown area has such character. There is a very diverse population, and on a first Friday, you will see every type of person imaginable, mingling together downtown. I have written and recorded a couple dozen songs in Milledgeville, where I currently reside, so I have definitely found plenty of creative inspiration around here. I wrote and recorded my last cd “Voodoo Panther” here, and I am recording a new one this winter. I have a home studio, where I do all my own recording, and I have my own record label, so I am 100% DIY. What would you like to see? Some kind of bus system that would bring people from outlying towns into Macon for the weekend. There are plenty of people who would like to come, but for those who drink, getting home is a problem, and nobody wants drunk drivers on the road!

he Reverend Wiley Drake of Buena Vista, CA has been praying for President Obama's death and encouraging others to do likewise, citing Psalm 109 (“may his days be few... may his children be fatherless,,,,”). You can find the bumper stickers and t-shirts online. In Drake's mind, Jesus is not only anti-Obama; he's also waiting for enough intercessory prayer to get the word from the Godfather (literally!) to actually whack the president. Some years, Jesus is the Prince of Peace; this season, he's a Hit Man. Personally, I think that God should consider suing these weirdos for defamation of character. The baby Jesus keeps morphing into something whiter and more right-wing every Christmas season. I mean, if the typical fundamentalist Christian reflects the current social values of Christ, then the Lord is heading into some Angry White Man territory. I fully expect to see a little manger scene featuring the Wise Men offering the holy family a different type of gift-giving: an AK-47, the video game Call of Duty, and an autographed copy of Going Rogue. Little J.C. is becoming less an historical figure from the Middle East and something of a paramilitary Buddy Christ for the Hummer set. Hitler believed that Jesus was of Celtic ancestry and not a Jew at all. The notion is absurd, but I am amazed at how many church members make casual anti-Semitic remarks. If you talk smack about Jews and the Middle East, aren't you sort of hating on your own Savior? Why do folks love to remake the Lord into their own image? Are religious people just trying to keep God relevant for their generation, or is it simply mass narcissism? I spent the seventies worshiping the sensitive Hippie Jesus with his dreamy surfer looks. A generation before me had a rugged blue-eyed Jesus a la films such as King of Kings. My daughters' generation has seen the rise of Christian mosh pits as Christ gets a makeover as the ultimate punk or the quintessential emo kid – maybe someone will soon market Jesus: the Twilight Edition. But recent years have brought us a camo-clad Savior who can't wait for the Final Battle. I am not particularly fond of what I will call Apocalypto-Jesus who is about to open a can of whoop-ass on the planet. This years' model of the Lord features a heavily-edited transcript of his words: no more call to “turn the other cheek”, no more meek inheriting the earth. He's hired a ghost writer to mine the internet for some Ayn Rand words

about the value of greed. He's been seen hanging with those temple money changers. Jesus has found a mondo jar of Sammy Sosa skin-bleaching cream. Jesus is no longer a dark-skinned Middle Easterner. Apocalypto-Jesus must love guns, because bumpers filled with pro-gun slogans sure tend to sit alongside of Christian fish emblems. Jesus particularly loves the second amendment to the Constitution because He guided every stroke of the pen held by the founding fathers, even the ones who held slaves and massacred Native Americans and drank like gutter punks on penny Pabst night. They were all just God's secretaries, and the United States of America is certainly ordained by God to be a theocracy. Well, I'm here to say that Jesus wasn't born in a red state. Mass hysteria and hogwash and twisting of the Bible into some overarching form of uber-patriotism needs to stop. I can't find the scripture which states that the U.S. is the Promised Land, or that the doctrine of Manifest Destiny was ever part of God's Plan. I fail to understand why mining and excavation of everything beautiful and valuable within the environment is any form of godly stewardship. Frankly, the constant use of God's name to justify the horrors of any government is sickening. Governments do good things and stupid things and always have. God isn't a Democrat, a Republican, or a freemarket capitalist. There's still the lovely, humble story of the Nativity which isn't about politics or fistfights in the Wal-Mart electronics department. A laboring woman who gives birth in a manger and the ensuing adventures of growing up as Jesus in Bethlehem doesn't require the overlay of gloss and Chinamade plastics. We don't need to turn the simplicity of the story into a call to arms against businesses who fail to say “Merry Christmas” to every customer. Let's just respect our differences and try to get along. Apocalypto-Jesus needs to take a long winter's nap. If you want to pray for the President, make it a real prayer for guidance. For eight years I had to hold my nose and hope that former president George Bush would make a decision about something that I could agree with. I could hate his choices, but it is too much weight to truly hate a person. I suggest that my brothers and sisters on the other side of the political fence consider this and, this season, remember the one called the Prince of Peace.

I recently had the opportunity to inteview a 27-year old named Brian about his new organization called Can-Do Conservatives. Brian was born with a malady of defects he calls “blessings.”

and the right

Conservative commentator Bill Knowles, a resident of Bibb County, spurs debate about local, state and national politics

One Person Making a Difference

B

rian Donegan could very easily sit in his Lawrenceville, Georgia home and complain about his life and what is happening in the world around him. Brian is a 27 year-old who was born with a host of maladies that include being legally blind, Cerebral Palsy, a bilateral cleft lip and palette, no sense of smell and many other defects that he calls “blessings”. But Brian is not that type of man. Instead, Brian has chosen to do something about things by trying to make a difference in our country, in particular, for handicapped individuals who call themselves Conservatives. I recently had the opportunity to inteview Brian about his new organization called Can-Do Conservatives.

When was Can-Do Conservatives started? Nine months ago it started as a dream in my head (It just recently became registered as a legal 527 political organization). It was right after the contest for RNC Chair. I was highly disappointed. Not as much in our choice but that none of the candidates were interested in reaching out to the disabled in their plans for moving forward as a party. I am sick and tired of being championed by liberal Democrats who just want to use us as pawns on a political chess board with entitlement programs that tie us down to the Government ball-and-chain. Republicans have done a very poor job of reaching out to the disabled. We need to get back to the Reagan model of building coalitions by standing firm on our Conservative values and principles, but aiming the message in the right directions and communicating our positions well. What is the primary goal of Can-Do Conservatives? To give a voice to the least represented group of people in Conservatism, the disabled. I attended my first Georgia Republican Convention in Savannah this past May. I watched as many different groups were represented , but no one spoke on behalf of the disabled. Also, I just attended Michelle Bachman's "Emergency House Call" on the west side of the US Capital a few weeks ago. One one speaker, Chris Smith (R-NJ) mentioned the fact that the disabled will be adversely affected by the healthcare bill Pelosi and Co. are trying to ram down our throats. There is definitely a long way to go, but it is a fight worth taking on. Who has been your favorite politician to deal with? By far, that would be Governor Mike Huckabee. He is the nicest person I have ever met. A close second would be candidate for Insurance Commissioner Gerry Purcell. There are many others in close proximity like Gubernatorial candidates John Oxendine (Georgia) and Bob Vander Plaats (Iowa), Iowa Congressional Candidate, Steve Rathje (IA-2), I can't name everyone or you

Brian Donegan and Governor Mike Huckabee

would run out of space for your column! Most politicians I have met over the past year in my travels have been very nice and supportive. Who is your personal inspiration? I have always been interested in politics, ever since I was very young. However no one inspired and motivated me to get off the political sidelines before Governor Huckabee's Presidential campaign. When I discovered him I was at a crossroads in my life. I needed some direction and a boost of confidence. I found it as I volunteered for Governor Huckabee's campaign and left my comfort zone doing things I never even considered doing before. The Can-Do Conservatives of America is my progression in political activism. What do you feel is our nation's number one concern going into the new year? "It's The Economy, Stupid!" Many of our problems in the country right now stem from our economic woes. Unfortunately during a time of economic downturn and a time when our debt is running sky high because we are throwing money down a rat hole, the solutions for Washington is to increase the debt even further by socializing health care and handing out ridiculous bailouts. Our dollar is getting weaker by the day, unemployment is growing fast, and the threat of more taxation, regulation, and litigation is stunting the growth of small businesses. It's also leading to job migration and we should be working on creating more jobs, not driving them overseas! The disabled are more likely to start small businesses and we should be promoting the entrepreneurial spirit, not killing it! What direction do you feel our country is heading? Things are going downhill fast! In the past year we have become a nation of clunker cars, bailout czars, and a runaway debt going way too far. To be fair, things weren't exactly going in the right direction under the previous administration but things have been deteriorating rapidly under President Obama's watch. We can either do one of two things. We can sit and watch or we can stand up and fight. I am going to stand up and fight!

The we is us, the il y Records & the 11th H people who’ve huddled around The 11th Hour for the our Cox Capit o l Theatre last few years, looking for something to do, the people who’ve come to love Random Family music, its December 31, 200 9 Doors ope friends and the bands in the scene. There will be n @ 9pm $15 – adm other parties and probably a few good ones, but ission; $ 30 – admis none that are just for us, the students and alumni of sion & yea rbook (wh Rock n Roll High School. ile they la st ) This is our Class Reunion… from the Future! We love our great past—Otis Redding (Class of 1963), Little Richard (1955), Allman Brothers (1971)—and our chart-topping present—Young Jeezy (2005) and Jason Aldean (2005)—but this is about our future. Since we aren’t there yet, we’re gonna fake it till we make it. Do what? You decide what year class reunion this is for you and come as that version of yourself: who you will be in 10, 15, 20 years. Maybe you’ll finally change your name to Duo Maxwell and become a world class DJ in 10 years, so come as that. Or whatever. You can, as Nirvana (Class of 1991) sang, come as you are, but we like it when you wear your insides on the outside. If you want, dress up like your clique or crew from high school: jocks, nerds, smokers, greasers, hippies, preps, cheerleaders, art house, etc. Like Walt would’ve said, we contain multitudes. The idea here is to show that off and have some fun. What kind of fun? Well, you can’t be Duo Maxwell (Class of 2010) because he’s our special guest DJ who’ll be spinning (in a Mexican wrestling mask) for the first time in the Mactropolis alongside our favorite jam master, Montalban Jr. And of course, you can expect to see the likes of Floco Torres, Citizen Insane, Al K!NG, City Council and some other Random Family members and friends, but be aware, THIS IS NOT A CONCERT. It’s an event with music, great live music. Don’t know how to describe for you the weirdness that we’ve been cooking up, but it’s going to be something you’ll talk about later. Much later. In the days after you’ve not only recovered but cobbled together words to describe it. And we’ll have yearbooks! We’re only going to make 100 or so of these things, and they’ll be ready by the 11th Hour Readers Choice Awards. Come to the Class Reunion to get your picture in the yearbook, or email a headshot and your name, grade and bio to RNRHS@randomfamilyrecords.com. We’ll put them in the yearbook with pictures gathered from all the crazy, weird, fun and memorable events from the past year. If you have some to send or an event you want in, hit us up. If you and your crew want to take your picture together and be The Glee Club, that’s cool. Be creative. This is yours, ya know? And you can get a copy of it for just $15. Direct your questions and concerns to RNRHS@randomfamilyrecords.com. We’ll see you on New Year’s Eve! by Chris Horne adam smith

Shopping Local Makes Big Economic Impact 3/50 Project new national initiave for small business

W

hat if your favorite local shop closed its doors tomorrow? It’s hardly news to anyone that all businesses, but particularly small businesses, have seen tough times of late, but now there’s a way you can help. The 3/50 Project is a national initiative designed to encourage consumers to shop local and save the local shops that are the backbone of our economy. The idea is simple: pick three locally-owned businesses and spend $50 between them each month. If half of the U.S. population followed this formula, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue, according to stats from the U.S. Department of Labor. The importance of shopping local lies in supporting our neighbors and their shops, but the results can also be seen in many other ways. For every $100 spent in a local shop, $68 returns to the local economy through taxes, payroll and other expenditures like supplies. Compare that to the $43 that stays with the local economy from national chain purchases. It may cost a little more to get that item at a local shop, but that extra money, through taxes and the services they fund, may go to fill in the pothole that you hit every day on the way to work. But the 3/50 Project isn’t an “all-or-nothing” concept. The idea isn’t to completely stay away from big-box stores and national chains, but just to spend some of that money at local shops. Organizers stress balance in shopping, and some national chains are even supporting the project, knowing that a successful economy needs both. It's time Macon got the word out about this initiative. Chris Abbott, with Jack and Coat Clothiers in downtown Macon, knows it's not easy to be an independent business in this economy.“We can appreciate any effort for the community to get out and support locally owned businesses, it's important we all do anything we can.” “The unique, local shops are the ones that really give a town its character and personality. My business is about as local as it gets”, says Kevin Meadows owner of Meadows Fine Jewelry, “as I make most of the things in the store.” Healso noted that employees in small shops are typically more knowledgeable about the products they sell, and more able to give advice when a customer isn’t sure what he or she wants. 3/50 is trying to change the mindset of the general public. It's time to get the word out that Wal-Mart shouldn’t be your one-stop shop.

base basics

Journalist Karen Jones delves into the idiosyncrasy that comes along with being a military wife.

www.JonesToTheGrindstone.com

The Perfect Military Wife Part Three

Once the husband hits a high rank and supervisory status, the wife is expected to take on a new identity. The perfect military wife will make it look effortless and not complain in public.

I

t was once described to me as, “having his rank embroidered on her panties”—when the leadership’s wife is accused of wearing her husband’s rank. In the military, an established and respected chain of command results in a well-run squadron. At the top, there is the boss with his spouse. From there, the job trickles from his shoulder boards all the way down to her panties getting in a wad. I like to call it the “two-fer” deal. For example, once a woman’s husband becomes a squadron commander, she should plan on being the “woman behind the man”--to dutifully support him and his squadron. The military member’s career absorbs the whole family into a lifestyle. It is preferred to have the lead couple seen as a solid, functional unit. Observing the commander have a happy, sustainable family reflects stability. Stability is craved in times of stress and war. But, what if the wife is shy, only wants to take care of her children, has a career of her own, or a combination of all of that? Often, the answer would be, “Too damn bad. Deal, lady.” While the man is running the business of the squadron, the wife is running the social end of things. By default, she is in charge of heading the spouses’ monthly coffees, perhaps publishing a newsletter, and even rustling up a fundraiser. Heck, she

may need to hostess the children’s Christmas party, too. Don’t forget that she should attend the base’s official spouses’ club; warm a seat at those functions. Never mind that the official base club needs her to take a seat on the board. In fact, she may have to organize a theme party for one of the year’s official spousal club meetings. While she is selling chili dogs to help pay for the children’s Christmas party, she needs to remember to call the spouses of the deployed and check on their wellbeing. Oh, and tell her to not forget to take care of whatever she used to do before her husband was named the commander. The buy-one-get-one (BOGO), the two-fer, is assumed. He receives the paycheck and she tries to seamlessly double her family’s supportive efforts at the workplace. A commander spouse friend of mine once said, “The only way to get out of all that is to get a job, get sick, or have a baby.” Those are the top three salable excuses. However, they are only excused temporarily until it can all get juggled. And she will get it handled. She has to. Military spouses need each other. Someone has to be the leader. The easy out is to hang it on the commander’s wife. Sometimes a woman may take on her title like a bad pageant queen: show-off, go out of bounds, and boss people around. But, those are the jerks and the exceptions. Behind a strong military husband, is an even stronger (and more tired) military wife. *Typically, if the commander is a female, the husband gets a free pass.

Dear Santa, I stopped believing in you when I was really young . My cousin (yes, THAT cousin) found all her Xmas wishes stuffed in her Mom and Dad’s closet. Still I hedged my bets, by writing you a letter every year. Sometimes I get what I want, sometimes I get that burgundy v neck sweater from Banana Republic that my mom’s been trying to get me to wear for three decades. Here is my list for 2009. IT’s been a rough year.

- Stripper Breath Candles- I’ve always been a big fan of the candle. I like the light they throw off, I love how I look in candlelight but I’ve always hated the housewife glad air freshener connotations that come with them. Finally, this candle for men can be purchased at etsy.com (don’t get me started). They basically cut 22 oz beer bottles in half, fill them up with wax that (if you cut yourself, stop whining, you’re a man) smells like amber or construction sites. I’ll take two.

- The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt’s life is an instruction manual on manliness. In Edmund Morris’ book, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, we see TR overcome adversity after adversity in order to become a paragon of manliness. Read about TR kicking his childhood sickness’s butt and then heading out West to become a rancher in the Dakotas.

- Pocket Compass. As a man who spends a great deal of time outdoors, could I have a nice pocket compass so I’ll never lose my way. Sure, GPS may be easier and more accurate, but batteries die and satellite connections can be disrupted. That’s when having a compass comes in handy.

- Moleskins are for pussies. Give me some Field Notes. While on the road, a man needs something on which to

write down their observations and experiences. A journal can be too big and the back of napkins are just too small. Enter Field Notes. Inspired by vintage agricultural memo books, these 3.5 inch by 5.5 inch notebooks are large enough to capture all your thoughts but small enough to keep in your back pocket. - A bag from Saddleback Leather Company. If you’re looking for a leather man bag or suitcase, there’s no better place to buy one than the Saddleback Leather company. Exquisitely built to last, these babies carry a 100 year warranty. It’s a bag your descendants will fight over when your dead.

ALBUMS new releases: by David Higdon Raekwon

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt II Released September 8, 2009 Wu-Tang’s most celebrated chef has been stirring the pot of beats over his spitfire delivery, and he’s ready to serve. Part I may be one of the best rap albums of the ‘90s, and arguably the best from any of the Wu’s many solo projects. Why it has taken the Chef 14 years of stuttered starts to match that recipe, I don’t know, but this album comes close to the original’s impact. Ghostface Killah is present throughout, but the guest MCs don’t stop there. Method Man, Popa Wu, and even the coach himself, Slick Rick are all on hand to deliver. Wu-Tang fo Life!

Super 400

Sweet Fist Released September 15, 2009

Sweet 400 is straight up, dirty rock band fun. For those in the southeast, we haven’t been graced too often by their tour stops, but their albums make one long for a good live charge. The power trio plays a garage rock combo of late 60s era Black Sabbath and The Creation with the modern southern gothic of Kings of Leon. “Needle Down” and “Another Heavy Word” will give you a good idea.

ASTROLOGY You will say things without thinking. You can be arrogant, presumptuous, and your own interests will come first. You are spending money on something practical with which to surprise someone. Look around you for better prices since you want to consider this item as an investment. You may want to try a weekend getaway as you are starting to feel restless but being as busy as you are, you know it is hopeless. A vacation much later could be planned.

LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Libra is artistic, musical, level headed, sympathetic, and generous. You can be gossipy, critical, and bitter. You can be very intuitive this week so you should be sure to follow some of those wild and “off the wall” hunches. This is a time of prosperity for you. Any artistic talent you have should come out during this period and bring you a great deal of satisfaction. You can be very charming (as usual) and attract people to you with your keen magnetism.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are practical, peace loving, stubborn, and deliberate. Taurus has a natural interest in money, and you like the finer things in life. This is an extremely busy week so you must begin immediately. Do not let things do not pile up. Plan a little of your time to rest and relax so you do not overdo. Perhaps you can delegate some of the work to others. You trust. Be very careful on the road as everyone is in a hurry but not alert to their driving. Look for bargains so you do not overspend.

SCORPIO (October 23-Nov 21): You are very intense, strong willed, determined and secretive. You can be willful and sarcastic, but a deep thinker with a fine mind. Now that you have thought everything through, it is time to come out with your new plans. Not everyone will be pleased with your decisions once you have explained them. You have only one more week or so to go before you finally decide you can not keep spending your money foolishly. Impulse shopping will finally come to an end just before the “money tree” dies.

ARIES (March 21-April 19):

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini is versatile, fickle, intelligent, creative, quick, neat, and curious. Gemini learns quickly and has the ability to get a good education. About half a dozen times a year you get restless feet and want some type of change. This week is one of those times. Sometimes you act on it and sometimes you do not. This is not really a good time for change. Someone needs to talk with you about their struggle with finances and they have a very fine and logical sounding argument to present. Beware! Do not fall for it.

To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and box must contain the numbers 1 to 9.

GOOD LUCK!

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancer is sentimental, sensitive, and needs to have a sense of security. Cancer is intensely romantic and has a vivid imagination. Listen carefully to what others have to say. They have something important to tell you. You win all debates or arguments that come up this week. Be careful how you spend your money as you could easily be overcharged. Look around for bargains and be very practical and objective if possible. A busy weekend is coming up, so be prepared. LEO (July 23-August 22): Leo is colorful, self assured, outgoing, impulsive and expansive. If are running into trouble, it may seem to be too much for you to handle by yourself. Others are willing to help if you let them know what is needed. A piece of real estate suddenly needs some money spent. It is quite easy to overspend so get some estimates before you commit yourself. You have many errands to run this week so be careful driving.

Last issues puzzle answers

VIRGO (August 23-Sept 22): You can be highly critical, sarcastic, & unforgiving. If you look for it, there is a wonderful opportunity out there somewhere for you. It will mean very hard work, serious thought and perhaps putting in some overtime but if you pace yourself, you would do fine. This could reinvent and revitalize your whole work ethic. By the end of this week you should discover exactly what it is. The best of luck to you.

SAGITARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sagittarius is warm and friendly. You like to talk a great deal making it difficult for others to get a word in edgewise. This is an excellent month to reorganize everything. This is a time for building a new profile. Any good Karma you have stored up in the past is repaid to you within the next two weeks. This is when you should be building toward your future as slow and steady progress can happen. Follow your hunches this week. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Capricorn is very often politically minded. Capricorn is also patient, reserved, cautious, faithful and shrewd. If you are giving a lecture or presentation of some type this week, it goes very well and everyone actually listens to you. You have some interesting ideas and you will share them. A vacation with friends could be made at this time for a trip somewhat later in the year. The next four months should be your time for earning some good money. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Independence and a feeling of freedom is necessary. Aquarius has a strong will, and is original, inventive, and will always enjoy doing the unexpected. You may need to follow your hunches or intuition to avoid running into trouble this week. Someone is always exaggerating and causing problems at your work place. False gossip is going around so do not get caught up in it or you could be blamed. Aggressive drivers are on the road now so you will need to pay attention when out. PISCES (Feb 19-March 20): You are emotional, ultra-sensitive, easy going, and sociable, Worry plagues you. Pisces will see only the good in others. You have much to do this week but if you ask, friends are more than willing to help you. Try to delegate some of the chores so you are not over tired by the end of the week. It is very easy to go overboard now so pace yourself at a much slower rate. Listen carefully to others since they have some very good ideas or advice for you. Be careful on the road now and practice defensive driving.
