until we moved to Santa Cruz, where we began our real love affair. Things turned around for me there, for the first time in a long time. I attribute most of that to her. I say all this because after 15 years, she passed away in her sleep this past weekend, here in my upstairs zombie-proof loft in Macon, Georgia. I’ve never been able to claim more than one good hand of friends and, a few of those fingers have pretty much always been occupied by dogs, and there is good reason for that. They are just better than people, all the way around. Karma, thank you baby, for never letting the world down. You made everything black and white. I love you. Dad.

was barely in my twenties bumming around California when a friend of mine who made his living telling peoples fortunes told me that there was a dog waiting for me at the pound. At the time, it made sense to go see what he was talking about, so I went, and there she was. Karma. I had to lie on the application. I was actually living in the backyard of an eighty-six year old Mexican man named Alfredo who had Alzheimer’s. There were days that he knew I was there. Most days he didn’t. I was camped out in the weeds of his fenced- in yard and I had been for four months. I barely made a sound, I walked to work every day, but I still didn’t have any money, so I lied to the folks at the pound. I gave them a made up address, talked my way out of the yard inspection, and took Karma to my tent. She’d spend the next several months with me there,

It’s All Greek To Me...

At least the weekend of October 23-25 when Macon’s Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church hosts its annual Greek Festival

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church will be hosting its premier Central Georgia Greek Festival in Macon October 23rd, 24th and 25th. Greek Festivals are held by Greek Orthodox Christian communities all over the United States. It has been a dream for Holy Cross to hold a festival in Macon and since last year’s festival was such a success they have decided to do it again this year! The Central Georgia Greek Festival is a way to bring all the aromas, sounds, tastes and traditions of Greece and the Mediterranean to your doorstep. It is a place where you can come and enjoy being Greek for a day. Being Greek means relishing the world around you and enjoying life to its fullest. The Central Georgia Greek Festival provides an opportunity for local Greeks to open their arms and their hearts and their kitchens to their Central Georgia neighbors and share the Greek culture with you. The Church, located at 859 First Street, is undergoing major renovation. Built in the late 1800’s as the First Street United Methodist Church the building bears an uncanny resemblance to a traditional Orthodox Basilica. When Holy Cross purchased the building it was in need of major overhaul. The museum-like structure deserves to be restored to its original splendor and this has been the primary drive for the commencement of this Greek Festival. The festival will open on Friday, October 10th with the sounds of the Grecian Echoes. Terry Daniellos and Luiben Demitrov have been entertaining Atlanta fans with Mediterranean music for years and are very familiar with the Macon area since they have played to packed houses in locally owned restaurants and clubs in central Georgia since the 80’s. Another feature of the festival will be the Saturday entertainment of a semi professional dance troupe in traditional Greek costume. “Eleftheria” from Marietta, Georgia is a talented team of youngsters who will perform on Saturday only. Each of the three suites of dances demonstrated will be different and will include what is known as an “Island Suite” a “Mainland Suite” and their highlight “Contemporary Suite”. Each suite will last about 25 minutes and promises to be very entertaining. This entertainment will amaze young and old. Be careful because if your foot taps too much you just might get pulled into dancing yourself! OCTOBER 15 - 28, 2009

But let’s face it, festivals revolve around food. The dining is unsurpassed and the Greeks figured this out centuries ago. Finally, Macon is going to be treated to traditional Grecian dishes like never before. Pasticio (pronounced Pas-tee’-tsio) is baked pasta and ground beef with an incredibly delicious egg/cheese/butter and milk topping that scintillates the taste buds. Served with famous Greek Salad a baguette of bread and some Delicious Greek Wine from the islands and you have a combination that will make you want to move to the Mediterranean. If that isn’t enough then sample the Chicken Souvlaki (pronounced soo-vla’-kee). Skewered and grilled with Greek spices and served with a cold glass of imported beer and you have a combination that will make your taste buds sing! Then there’s the standard Gyro sandwich (pronounced yee’-roe). Who can resist the roasted lamb and beef combination served on pita bread with the famous tsadziki (pronounced zadzee’-kee) sauce, lettuce, tomato and onions and a soft drink? Holy Cross is famous for their Gyros that they serve at the Cherry Blossom Festival every year. How about the Spanakopita or the Tiropita or get an Opa Dinner Platter and sample everything including a Greek salad? For dessert, imagine a serving of Baklava and a piping hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate. But give your taste buds a chance to sample the other fine pastries as well. Kourambiethes (pronounced koo-ram-beeye’-thes) and Koulouria (pronounced Koo-loor’-reeya). Inside the Parrish House of the Church you will find a traditional “Agora” which means “marketplace” where you can purchase fine jewelry from Ricamo International. Ricamo is famous for their European jewelry and scarves bedecked with coins from the old country. If you have always had a desire to obtain traditional religious icons painted in the Byzantine style then you must see “The Greek Soul”. These artisans have been creating Byzantine art for years and Iconography has been a tradition in Christian history since the Apostle Luke painted the first image of The Virgin Mary with Christ in the first century. If you want to own your own Greek music then consider “Evzone Music”. Atlanta pianist George Skaroulis (as heard on PBS’s “Visions of Greece” will be offering autographed CD’s containing relaxing, romantic sounds in addition to his original photography. The South is steeped in a strong religious back-

ground and because of this Holy Cross knows that many will be interested in hearing about the history of Orthodox Christianity. For this reason Father Julian Damian the Priest of Holy Cross will be conducting tours of the Church and discussing its ancient historic roots from the beginnings with Andrew the Apostle down through the ages to Bartholomew our present-day Patriarch. Someone will win a $500.00 first prize when the winner of the Church Raffle is announced on the last day of the festival. - Kathye Patras

here has been much discussion over the past several years about “family values.” There are even those who make a direct correlation between the Bible and “family values.” When I hear the tired rhetoric, I wonder what Bible they have been reading! Now be assured that I am for building healthy and strong marriages and families, but the problem is that it’s hard to find any families in scripture that look like the families that the “family values” folks describe. Jim Harnish, a Methodist preacher friend from Florida, reminded me that the Old Testament is the story of one dysfunctional family after another, from the sibling rivalry of Cain and Abel, to Jacob’s manipulation of Isaac and Esau (with more than a little help from his mother!), to Joseph’s brothers selling him into slavery, to Hosea buying back his prostitute wife or Solomon’s 300 wives! (Anybody want to have a discussion about “the wisdom of Solomon” after hearing about his 300 wives?) The word “family” appears six times in the gospels, none of them very positive. Jesus’ family comes to take him away because they think he is out of his mind (Mark 3:21). He calls his followers to leave their families behind (Mark 5:19). It is clear that Jesus expected family members to be in conflict (Luke 12:52). At one point Jesus’ mother asked to see him and he asked, “Who is my mother, brothers, and sisters? The person who does the will of God is my family.” My guess is that Mary wanted to ring his neck for that slight. If you can find one “traditional” family in the Bible, I hope you will show it to me. So much for the “family values” rhetoric. The genius of God is that God recognizes that which we often deny: We are all dysfunctional people living in dysfunctional relationships. Granted, some may be a bit more dysfunctional than others, but we share dysfunction in common. Even with all our dysfunction we keep trying to connect with each other because deep down we know that “it is not good for people to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) We are created for relationship with God and each other. Even God Herself/Himself is best described in relationship. The church I serve is in the process of creating a mosaic cross. Many separate pieces will be used to create the whole. And part of the cross is made up of symbols of our lives… pieces that represent brokenness, joy, letting go, and memory. One man who had very little gave a button. Another person gave a ring from a relationship that ended long ago. Another gave a 15 year Alcoholic Anonymous chip. Another person gave a special piece of china from their family. The artist will put these items together so that they form the Celtic cross. Pieces of our lives will be imbedded in this work of art. Imago Dei. You are created in the image of God. You have a unique and valued story. Don’t let anyone devalue you from the standpoint of faith. Feel lovingly sorry for them if they do, for they are the one with the problem. But I also invite you to live as you are shaped… God-like. If you accept that you are created in the image of God – unique and wonderful – then let that identity inform every part of who you are. Live like you belong to God – dysfunction and all!

A new revolving column by City Council members Rick Hutto, Nancy White & Larry Schlesinger about city politics and community news

F

ar too many of Macon’s neighborhoods are in dire need of an extreme makeover. At last report, our city is home to some five thousand vacant and abandoned properties. Even in the best of times, our city coffer are extremely limited in their abilities to address the magnitude of our current situation, so whenever an opportunity arises for our city and Housing Authority to apply for, and hopefully receive, a Hope VI grant to completely transform an neighborhood like Tindall Heights, that possibility ought not be missed or dismissed. The federal government instituted the Hope VI grant program in 1993 through its Office of Housing and Urban Development. This initiative aims to reduce the concentration of very low income families and build mixedincome communities, revitalize severely distressed public housing sites and improve the surrounding neighborhoods, and provide coordinated, comprehensive community and supportive services to help residents achieve self-sufficiency and improve the quality of their lives. It was, in fact, a Hope VI grant that enabled the Macon Housing Authority to demolish one of this city’s oldest and most obsolete public housing developments, Oglethorpe Homes, and replace it with Tatnall Place, a truly impressive mixed-

income complex. Moreover, the broad scope of this $19.2 million project improved the entire Beall’s Hill area as well as the quality of life and economic opportunities of its residents. Tindall Heights is a similar, antiquated project in rather desperate need of an extreme makeover. By today’s standards, it is of obsolete design, and a place where poverty is concentrated in a way that has an adverse effect on all of its surrounding neighborhoods. The Macon Housing Authority’s proposed development plan for Tindall Heights is the extreme makeover that that neighborhood needs. At the Authority’s expense, it provides for the relocation of all families from their current public housing sites by transferring them to newer, better sites, or by providing them with an even more popular Section 8 voucher. The project calls for the complete demolition of the 412 existing housing units and, in time, the erection of 443 new units similar to those in Tatnall Place and its surrounding neighborhoods that include single family homes, townhouses, garden apartments, and a mid-rise building for seniors, which would then be marketed and available to occupants of mixed income levels. In addition and in partnership with Mercer University and the Bibb County

Extreme Makeover Hope VI Style If we do ‘win’ that $22 million Hope VI grant and parlay it into a $90 million economic impact, then even in these very tough economic times, I’d say that our city’s $2 million investment was money extremely well spent. Department of Family and Children Services, the proposed plan also calls for the construction of an early childhood center that would serve the needs of families with infants and children up to five years old. The City of Macon and its Housing Authority are applying for an ambitious $22 million Hope VI grant, and in order to do so, we are all required to contribute something to the cause. The Macon Housing Authority will bring $3.6 million from its Capital Funds and $1.5 million from its Housing Replacement Funds to the table. The Macon Water Authority will contribute $1.5 million to the cause, and Mercer University will ante up $1 million, as well. The City of Macon must also commit to a $2 million payment from its General Fund that is payable over a three-year period for the application process to proceed. Add to all this $52.7 million in available tax credits, $3.2 million from the State of Georgia’s Department of Community Affair’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program grant monies, and an additional $1.4 million from the Community Development Block Grant

and Home Funds that the city receives, then we are looking at a housing project that is likely to have a $90 million economic impact in this area. The City of Macon and its Housing Authority, however, have absolutely no guarantees that we will be awarded the $22 million Hope VI grant that we request. Competition for these funds is fierce, and HUD did not select our request for a similar grant last year. Nevertheless, I am reminded of the story of the person who asked God to allow him to win the weekend’s lottery. When the lottery came and went, this person was absolutely outraged that his fervent prayers were not answered. “How could you let me down like this?” he complained. “Next time, do me a favor and buy a ticket!” God replied. We, too can’t win it unless we’re in it, and if we do ‘win’ that $22 million Hope VI grant and parlay it into a $90 million economic impact, then even in these very tough economic times, I’d say that our city’s $2 million investment was money extremely well spent.

Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of Deputy French The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of 31-year-old Deputy Sheriff Alex French, IV. Deputy French was serving his second overseas tour of duty with the Georgia Army National Guard when he was killed in action by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Deputy French had been on this deployment since May 2008. Deputy French was a 7-year veteran of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, most recently assigned to the Booking area of the Corrections Division. His supervisors and co-workers describe him as being “dependable,” “eager,” and “enthusiastic” toward his job. “My heart goes out to the family of Deputy French, as we all suffer the tremendous loss of such an honorable and noble young man.” Bibb Sheriff Jerry Modena said.

Mercer to Host Conference in Macon, Oct. 29-31, on Faith, Science and the Environment Mercer University, in partnership with and the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, will hold a conference, titled “Caring for Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response,” on the Macon campus Oct. 29-31. The conference will include two days of lectures and discussions on Oct. 29 and 30 and will conclude with a green day of service in the Macon community on Saturday, Oct. 31. The conference aims to bridge the current gap between the faith and science communities on issues of climate change. The conference’s goal is to engage and inspire Mercer students and the Central Georgia community to answer the challenge of caring for God’s creation. “This conference will not only serve as a platform to discuss pertinent issues of global climate change, but it will enable individuals to make tangible differences in their lives and community,” said Kathryn Doornbos, a senior biology major from Brasstown, N.C., and conference organizer. The event is part of Mercer’s efforts to help raise local awareness of climate change and creation care, in addition to its efforts to do so through service-learning and applied research. Organizers have developed the conference program to provide students and members of the community with the knowledge and skills needed to face these environmental challenges. Topics for the event range from climate change to environmental justice and will include an array of speakers. The daylong program on Oct. 30 will include more than a dozen break-out sessions with prominent scientists, pastors, farmers, students and professors. In addition to the breakout sessions on Oct. 30, Astyk, a noted writer, teacher and subsistence farmer, will deliver the closing address of the conference. OCTOBER 15 - 28, 2009

Dex Romweber is nothing less than an icon of the American music underground. The former frontman for the world famous psycho-surf-rockabilly-garage-punk combo Flat Duo Jets released his first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. He starred alongside R.E.M. in the 1987 cult classic film “Athens, GA Inside Out”. His first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps. He was showcased on MTV's The Cutting Edge and has shared the stage with dozens of other rock luminaries including Iggy Pop and the White Stripes.

After completing work on their T Bone Burnett-produced third album, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will hit the road this fall in support of their critically accaimed album. David Fricke, of Rolling Stone warned to keep an ear out for them and Bonnie Raitt raved, “One of the most soulful new bands around.” The band, out of Vermont, fronted by the bluesy songstress Grace Potter who also hammers on the Hammond B-3 and wails on rhythm guitar rivals Susan Tedeschi, with the vintage-raw sound of the Band & Lucinda Williams.

In 2007, when Mike Farris debuted his critically acclaimed Salvation in Lights, people who'd never heard of the former Screamin' Cheetah Wheelie's frontman, music business people and retailers who thought they'd "heard it all and seen it all," stood with mouths agape, aghast at how that sound, that soul, could come from such an unlikely source. In the two years since Salvation In Lights, Farris' live performances across the country, including Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Austin City Limits Festival have left music novices, fans and seasoned artists with the same awe-struck response.

Initially OLR paid tribute to the classic southern rock of la Rocha’s Georgia hometown, but soon absorbed the burgeoning psychedelic-country sounds of the West Coast. Johnny la Rocha’s grainy vocals and irreverent lyrics evoke a juke joint bluesman, a libidinous southern rocker, and a tender-hearted, crooning cowboy. This unlikely mix of styles is accomplished in the skillful juxtaposition of stripped down rock songs paired with lavish, quasi-psychedelic arrangements, next to wailing country folk.

OldStar featuring Shane Bridges @ Wild Wing

Shane Bridges is a singer songwriter that has been on the scene since 1995 when he and fellow friend Josh Carson formed Acoustic Workshop. After heavy touring for three years and selling a very impressive amount of Cd’s independently, Acoustic Workshop made quite a name throughout the southeast. At the end of 1997 Acoustic Workshop would come to an end, which would spark a new beginning for Shane’s writing. Oldstar was Shane’s final project before going solo, and he’s brining them back for a special show at Wild Wing.

Tron Jackson @ El Azteca

Tim has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old in 1966. He has become one of the many legendary performers hailing from Macon with an incredible, amazing, unique, unrivaled sound, style and flair.

The Jaguars @ The Hummingbird

The JAGUARS, Atlanta's surf and garage fueled organ trio, perform a wide range of original instrumental Hammond B3 style music from psychedelic surf, to swanky go-go, mixed in with some covers from Booker T & The M.G.'s, The Ventures, Dick Dale and others! Their sound is one that is familiar to many, but lost in today's times, and The Jaguars are bringing back a slice of the 60's mod era and infusing it with their own stylings, serving up a luscious platter of organ grooves. Everyone from adults to 20something hipsters alike have been spotted cutting a rug at a live Jaguars performance.

Mike Delaney has been playing guitar for over 40 years from Los Angeles to Atlanta with some of the biggest names in blues, soul, R&B, and funk. Consists of guitarists George Greer & Zach McElveen, percussionist Alex "Ticco Torres" Sanders, bassist Baxter James, and frontman Brian Smith. Joined on good nights by "The Macho Man" Randy Sanders on harmonica. 5 attorneys by day, but when the stage lights come on, this is as rocking a cover band as will play Macon.

The Dexateens & Vulture Whale @ The Hummingbird

The Dexateens came blasting out of Tuscaloosa, AL in 2004 with a self-titled debut of Southernaccented garage-punk. Last year's RED DUST RISING skillfully channelled the brothers Allman and Flying Burrito. Produced by exSugar David Barbe and Drive By Truckers' Patterson Hood, this contemplative follow-up is another welcome development. Naked Ground and Neil Armstrong evince a stronger melodic sensibility: the former rides a glorious twang'n'roll groove, the latter is a country-pop gem about astronautical tribulations. Nadine plumbs a stark well of acoustic despair, while Makers Mound is a controlled blaze of Skynyrd worship.”

Molly Pardon, Amy Godwin, Laura Meyer @ 567 Café

Local Songstress Heather Kemp has been booking some great music at the 567 and this is another example of her prowess. Our favorite

Devon Allman’s Honeytribe @ The Hummingbird

Honeytribe was formed in 1999 in St.Louis, Missouri. Led by singer / guitarist Devon Allman they quickly became one of the top draws in their hometown and won the Jam Band of the Year award in the Riverfront Times Magazine Poll. With monster world class bassist George Potsos and new drummer Gabriel Strange , this 3 headed beast has been born. High energy , grooving , bluesy , asskickin rock and roll the old school way.

highlighting middle georgia’s local talent

MUSIC

Not exactly local, but he’s been bugging us about his new album...

local sounds

Hollingworth’s newest record endeavor, “Life With a Slow Ear” will be released November 3, and he’s touring the southeast in support of it. Taylor is currently playing solo, although his newest album features Nate Walcott on keys, Michael Shackleford on drums, and Kate Taylor on back-up vocals. After a few emails, we decided to highlight this up and coming singer/songwriter by a quick Q&A with the Alabama musician. Why did you start playing music? I think i started because I felt something when I listened to it.

Meet Taylor Hollingsworth, he resides in Birmingham, recorded in Athens, frequents Macon and has toured with Conor Oberst, among others. Curious?

How would you describe your sound? I would describe my current sound as folksy blues acoustic with a weird voice singing on top.

Who are your influences? I used to play punky classic rock sort of stuff so i have lots of influences but my current influences are Lightnin Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Paul Simon, and John Prine. What do you think about the South’s Music Scene? I would say the south as a whole has an amazing scene.... lots of great music going on. I’m looking forward to my next visit to Macon, but ifyou can’t wait for that date, you can catch me in Atlanta in support of my new album on October 20 at Smith’s Olde Bar. What do you hope to be doing with your music in five years? I hope to still be making records in 5 years, and hope to be free artistically to do whatever I feel like doing.

Bunko for Breast Cancer: FEATURE

by jenny murr

Uniting families with every roll of the dice

“One in eight people will suffer from breast cancer. At our annual fundraiser, our tables seat eight... it’s likely that one person at each table will be touched by this disease.” Laura Paxton, Executive Director, Bunko for Breast Cancer

T

here are those days of change that everyone can vividly recall Nov. 22, 1963-Kennedy Assassination, Sept. 11, 2001-World Trade Center attack, and Jan. 20, 2009-Obama inaugurated. Kami and Clay Pugh can vividly recall August 4, 2005—the day they were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Yes, you read that right THEY were diagnosed with breast cancer. Although Kami is the patient, this couple is quick to tell you that cancer is a diagnosis that affects the entire family. “We have been affected emotionally, physically, mentally, psychologically, financially and spiritually,” Kami said. That is why they are thankful for a local organization that focuses on ministering to the needs of the entire family of a breast cancer patient—Bunko for Breast Cancer. “The organization is familyfocused, family-centered. It’s not just my well-being but the well-being of the entire family,” Kami said. Each family member has the opportunity to interact with other families who know exactly what the other is going through. Cayden Pugh, the couple’s four-yearold, participates in a group crafted especially for him—Beach Buddies Club. The Beach Buddies Coordinator, Donna Rumph, MSW, carefully plans age-appropriate activities and playtime that allow children of cancer patients to process their feelings while creating special friendships. Kami says that Cayden looks forward to the meetings when he gets a chance to “play with [his] ‘cancer friends’.” For Kami, Bunko for Breast Cancer offers so much more than little Cayden realizes. “It’s a wonderful program—very therapeutic,” Kami said. “[Members of the Young Survivors Beach Retreat Club] are close to my own age, so I feel comfortable discussing sensitive situations and problems relevant to young breast cancer patients.” Topics range from childcare issues to sexuality, nothing is taboo. It’s a give and take situation, according to Kami. “It’s about young women experiencing various stages of the process. I am so inspired by other women in my group who are further along in the process and I hope that I am an inspiration to those women who are just starting their journey.” Clay is working to establish a men’s group—MEN in PINK Spousal Support Program. They meet at Jock’s and Jill’s, a location separate from the rest of the family. “Men have a different way of responding to the diagnosis,” he said. “I want men to know that they aren’t the only ones going through this. Sometimes it’s easier to talk with someone you don’t know.” But group members don’t have to talk if they don’t want to. The group also OCTOBER 15 - 28, 2009

What is Bunko for Breast Cancer?

Bunko for Breast Cancer was established in 2007 to serve the emotional, financial and physical needs of young survivors and their families in the Central Georgia Community. Each family has different needs and the organization customizes services to meet them. Whether a family needs encouragement, support or even tangible assistance, Bunko for Breast Cancer works to meet each family’s individual challenges. Executive Director Laura Paxton understands, firsthand, the issues facing patients and their families. With a 3-yearold son and a 3-month-old daughter, she became a primary caretaker for her mother. Diagnosed with breast cancer, her mother underwent 5 months of chemo and radiation (this is her 5th anniversary as a survivor). “When someone gets a breast cancer diagnosis, everything seems to be more urgent. There doesn’t seem to be much time to evaluate options and many times people feel rushed to make critical decisions,” Paxton said. Her entire family learned about more than just cancer treatments from her mother’s experience. They learned the value of the support from family and friends; and they knew that they wanted to help other cancer patients. After attending a Bunko for Breast Cancer event held in Raleigh, Laura’s mom came home and pitched the event for the Middle Georgia Community. “The first event was held 30 days later; 96 people attended and we raised $3000. Jocks and Jills and Sutton Acura have been our

presenting sponsors and have allowed us to grow to new levels with their ongoing generosity.” Since the first event, the organization has grown by leaps and bounds. The latest fundraising event was held on Feb. 27, 2009, at Al Sihah Shrine Park. “We had over 450 women in attendance and we raised approximately $60,000. These funds stay right here in Central Georgia and support our various programs and services,” Laura said. Tickets for the 2010 event will go on sale December 1. Next year’s event will be held on Friday, Feb. 19, at the Shrine Park. Mark Ballard will return as the Annual Emcee and T-shirt designer. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at Jocks and Jills Sports Grill, Sutton Acura or online at bunkoforbreastcancer.org after Dec. 1. Balancing their outreach between structured programs and family socials, there is something available for each family member: “All services are free to breast cancer patients and their families.” • Young Survivors Beach Retreat Club supports survivors in all stages of their breast cancer diagnosis. fighting or in remission. • Beach Buddies Club serves children ages four to sixteen by giving them an opportunity to learn more about cancer, how to cope with it in their family and how to understand and communicate their feelings. It offers children a safe place to have fun as well as gain support. The group meets simultaneous to the Young Survivors Club and allows the children to express themselves through conversation, art and structured play. There is also a summer camp each July that allows children to enjoy outdoor activities, arts and crafts, stories and games while providing a safe environment to express themselves. • MEN in PINK is a spousal support group that meets simultaneously with the Young Survivors Beach Retreat Club and the Beach Buddies Club. Its purpose is to offer an informal time of fellowship for spouses and, if desired, an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings with others facing similar circumstances.

B

unko for Breast Cancer is comprised of many volunteers, each with his own individual skills. Board Member, Dr. Bowden Templeton, Ph.D., LMFT, has been intimately involved in the group for over a year, sharing his expertise in helping to fashion the programs that are offered.

FEATURE

october is breast cancer awareness month

His main focus is on supporting the children. “It’s one thing for adults who can make choices, but kids are more vulnerable and need extra attention,” Bowden said. “Donna Rumph, the Beach Buddies Coordinator, is very invested in the kids. I never cease to be amazed by the depth she considers to put together a program. It’s arts and crafts with an eye to shape programs that will be useful in helping kids deal with an extraordinarily significant event in their families.” While many of the services involve providing education and emotional support to the family, the organization also provides more tangible services. “Concrete, practical things are a huge help for families,” Bowden said. “Meals from the Schwan truck, housekeeping vouchers, and massage help patients and family members process their experiences. Collectively, the value of our services lies in the building of community and sharing a trying experience with others.” At their initial diagnosis of Stage 2 ER/PR positive and HER2/neu positive breast cancer, the Pugh family didn’t have the benefit of the support offered by Bunko for Breast Cancer. It would be two years before the valuable organization got its start, but the Pugh’s are glad to have the services available now. “There wasn’t a lot of time to process anything. I was diagnosed on Aug. 4th, started Chemo on the 5th (16 treatments

over 6 months), and a bilateral mastectomy on Jan. 25, 2006 followed by 33 radiation treatments,” Kami said. Having dealt with anger directed at her initial doctor’s one year delay in treating the lump Kami found, she says that she’s not looking for retribution. “I just want the doctor to know about his mistake so that next time he will listen to his patient.” she said. “I want women to hear my story and learn the lesson not to let a doctor

delay treatment of a suspicious lump.” Now she focuses on more positive things, like being a blessing to other patients in similar situations. Attitude is everything when battling cancer. “You either decide your gonna whip this or not. The will to live is important. I’m a true believer that attitude affects how you will do,” Clay said. And the many services offered by Bunko for Breast Cancer help build a positive attitude. •

The third Friday in October of each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR PATIENTS By Bowden Templeton, Ph.D., LMFT For Patient and Spouse:

HONOR THE SHOCK – A cancer diagnosis is initially overwhelming. Patients and family members need to say “This is a shock to my system and it’s okay.” HAVE A CLOSE PERSON WITH YOU DURING VISITS TO YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS – they can be your eyes and ears.

REACH OUT – Get all the information you can about the medical, psychological, relational stressors you will experience and be willing to talk about them. HONOR THAT YOU WILL HAVE GOOD AND BAD DAYS – Enjoy the good days and use them on “blue” days. Give the “blue” feelings space and they will eventually go away.

Bunko for Breast Cancer Provides:

• Young Survivors Beach Retreat Club • Beach Buddies Club for children ages 4 – 16 • Free nursery for children under 4 years old • Books and resources • Chemo Kits consisting of a soft blanket, socks and other items to make chemo treatments a little easier • Summer Camp for kids in July • Spousal Support Group • Meal and housekeeping vouchers For more information about Bunko for Breast Cancer meetings and fundraisers, visit their website at www.bunkoforbreastcancer.org.

o there was this exorcism recently up at Berry College in a chicken-andthe-Lord Christian leadership dormitory sponsored by Chick-fil-a's Winshape Foundation. Nathan Mallory was holding a Bible study in his room on September 21st, and a former student appeared distressed during prayer. Mallory immediately recognized her tears and grinning as absolute evidence of demonic possession and took action to eradicate the devil from the distraught woman. Noise and mayhem ensued, which concerned Mallory's neighbors. The next morning, Mallory wrote the following warning regarding the night's events to his hallmates: DO NOT start rumors about this, because you are on dangerous territory. Do not judge anyone. God was in control, and if you don't like the way it was handled, then please ask the Lord to send you demon possessed people so that you can do it better. He seemed a little bitter over freaking out his neighbors. I love the Christlike dare to other students to improve upon his own exorcism techniques. The next week, Dean of Students Debbie Heida removed Nathan Mallory from his position as resident assistant of Pilgrim Hall. Today I read that the now demon-free woman denies that the devil was ever cast out of her, and that Nathan Mallory is involved in a he said/she said kerfuffle. Stay tuned, as unauthorized and disputed exorcisms sponsored by fast food do not inspire me to contribute to the skinny cows of Chick-fil-a (although I am weak, PETA). However, Chick-fil-a founder Truett Cathy is a Southern Baptist, and as an officially backslidden full-immersion Baptist myself, I don't remember the denomination exactly cottoning to the supernatural business of signs and wonders. I always thought that the church leaders considered the rowdiness surrounding miracles somewhat lowbrow. I presume that the Winshapers will take care of this renegade action swiftly and decisively, before exorcisms become fashionable and the pea-soup vomit a la Linda Blair causes Christian dorms to require an additional upfront cleaning deposit. Many, many chickens were sacrificed at the altar of Truett Cathy's empire in order to fund this Christian scholarship program, and students are required to show exemplary godly behavior. This would probably exclude controversial actions such as Mallory's. Berry College's own Viking Fusion message board became a great theological

debate, with the usual name-calling results. One person posted regarding the woman's version of reported events with this disturbing insight: I'm not saying that I don't believe her, I just feel she isn't credible at this point. I just love it when the woman in question is not a credible witness as to whether she was or was not harboring a demon. Internet message board experts are just a species unto themselves. I recommend that, like on Facebook, a person who desires to post their valuable opinions on the World Wide Web be required to put a real name and a face to it. It seems like our only chance at cultivating a little civility on that nasty pastime that plagues the online free speech movement. The exorcism business itself was a rare thing until William Friedkin directed The Exorcist(1973) and suddenly, demons were everywhere. Leave it to Hollywood special effects to create widespread panic over the dark forces. But church-sanctioned exorcism is rare, and most incidents of alleged possession are more likely symptoms of hysteria, psychosis, Tourette's syndrome, or epilepsy. This seems to be pretty trivial stuff to devote a column to, but I recognize extreme religious zealotry as both the great idealism and foolishness of youth. The best impulse of many young adults is the desire to save the world through something visionary, whether it is through godliness, or peacemaking, or environmental preservation, or through music, or literature, or art. That is the beauty of education, and of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, and social action, and the arts. We need Nathan Mallory's idealism - he believes in his own ability to have God work through him. I might not believe in his God or his devil, but a part of me applauds the desire to effect change in the world for good. I personally get weary of the irony and cynicism I see in many young people who feel that the best use of the great gift of being alive is nothing more than updating their social networking page, or beating the next level of a video game. However, trying to cast out demons is a cry for help – that boy needs some serious guidance. While it's easy to feel like the invincible maverick, young people need mentoring and structure. Older people have a lifetime of knowledge and experience worthy of their consideration. That's why students go to college, in the purest sense – to study, and to learn, in order to be the next generation in charge. Leave the special effects to the movies. Concentrate on being a helpful and kind person, infinitely curious as to the meaning of life. That's my advice to Nathan Mallory, and to everyone – including myself.

The exorcism business itself was a rare thing until William Friedkin directed The Exorcist(1973) and suddenly, demons were everywhere. Leave it to Hollywood special effects to create widespread panic over the dark forces.

The Obama Nobel

n one of the biggest surprises of the century thus far it was announced last week that President Barack Obama had been selected to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Is it just me or is anyone else scratching their head and asking “Why?” What in the world has this man done to receive a peace prize, or any prize for that manner? In their announcement, the Nobel Committee stated that our President was awarded the prize “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” The committee goes on to cite Obama’s ability to “capture the world’s attention”, and his gift to the world of “hope for a better future”. So wait, let me get this straight, all it takes is a pinch of optimism, mixed with a smidge of hopefulness and Obama is being awarded an internationally recognized award typically reserved for those individuals who actually make concrete efforts to accomplish peace? My question is why wasn’t Mary Poppins nominated decades ago? I wish the Committee would have been more honest and just said that Obama is receiving the award because he is in fact the world’s greatest kiss-up. Is it just me, or is it anytime Obama visits a foreign dignitary he becomes a twenty-first century version of Eddie Haskel? ‘You certainly are looking handsome today, Mr. Chavez. Thank you for the wonderful book! I’ll keep it on my nightstand.’ Wimp. Even Chavez stated the obvious when he said, "For the first time, we are witnessing an award with the nominee having done nothing to deserve it: rewarding someone for a wish that is very far from becoming reality." There is no denying that Obama has in fact accomplished incredible things thus far during his relatively short tenure as President – for example he has somehow found the time and opportunity to take steps to appease nearly all of the world’s most hated and feared dictators such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, whichever Castro is actually running Cuba and Dmitry Medvedev of Russia. Well apparently, the Nobel Committee sees something the rest of the world doesn’t see. Let’s dissect the Obama Peace-Appeasement Tour and see if I’ve missed something, shall we? He warmly received the afore mentioned book from Chavez, he bowed to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, offered Ahmadinejad a “promise of a new beginning” and just recently has shelved the plans for a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. Have I missed anything? Oh yeah, he let North Korea’s Kim Jong Il threaten to “wipe out” the United States. In fairness, Obama did issue a very “stern” warning after North Korea tested a ballistic missile last April. The warning shook Kim up so bad he fired some more directly at Hawaii in July. Come on Barack! Read your history! Peace through appeasement is not a foreign policy. It is, however, a losing strategy that can never

work. A republic cannot be afraid to flex its’ muscles on occasion by “walking softly and carrying a big stick” as suggested by Theodore Roosevelt, a former President who genuinely deserved the Nobel Peace Prize he received. In my opinion Obama is doing way too much “walking softly” and not enough big stick carrying. In seems in his efforts to avoid conflict and promote peace, he is forfeiting the health and safety of the United States, and creating increased conflict and unrest at home. There is another thing to consider when thinking about the horrible decision made by the five-member Nobel Committee from Oslo: Barack Obama had been President eleven days when their decision was made. No folks, that’s not a misprint. ELEVEN DAYS. Our Commander-InChief hadn’t even decided on Sasha and Malia’s Portugese Water Spaniel yet much less done anything that remotely resembled leadership that would warrant a Nobel Prize. This once highly respected prize has just been diminished to something slightly above Harvard’s Hasty Pudding Award and just below an MTV Moonman with this most recent selection of Obama a slap in the face to all of the worthy recipients such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Elie Wiesel, Bishop Tutu, Mother Teresa and Lech Walesa just to name a few. If Obama had any class whatsoever he would have refused this “honor”. Le Duc Tho, a North Vietnamese negotiator shared the prize with Dr. Henry Kissinger in 1973 and to Tho’s credit, he refused to accept the award as there was no peace negotiated in Vietnam at that point. As much as I admire Dr. Kissinger, he should have followed the lead that Tho gave him. However, Kissinger’s narcissism stood in his way, much the way it stands in the way of President Obama. At least Kissenger did something honorable and worthy of the award. The same cannot be said of Obama. I have a suggestion for the Nobel Committee. Posthumously award the peace prize to someone who did more to secure peace in our world than any other single person: Ronald Reagan (I’m sure that suggestion just made every liberal reading this grumble!). President Reagan did more to affect peace for generations to come in one summit with Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik than President Obama will do in a lifetime of appeasement towards tyrants and apologies to the world for the United States’ past behavior. Obama now joins the ranks of such notables as Al Gore and his infomercial on Global Warming, Kofi Annan who kept the “peace” as UN Secretary General as 800,000 Rwandans perished, and the very well known international terrorist Yasser Arafat, who once said, “Peace for us (Palestinians) means the destruction of Israel.” Great company you’re keeping there Mr. President.

Clothes. Some of us just throw it on, never thinking twice. Some of us agonize over it. Some of us are just not quite sure about it. I tend to crave it, wish for it. I’ve been looking at my past “Wish Lists” (yes, I keep clothes wish lists) and they all have seemed very “adult.” Very “grown-up.” Now, I have nothing against this–in fact, I think there is nothing more polished than a woman who is wearing something understated, well-cut, with just a slight tweak of trend to her outfit. But, being on the cusp of (cough, cough) middle age, I want to embrace the joy of reckless youth and funky dressing. And I DO indeed mix it up. I don’t have a particular style that you could connect me to. I could buy a smart black pencil skirt from Elie Tahari and then buy something from Target and find something outlandishly fabulous at Treasure Vintage. I think life would be boring if you didn’t put your clothes in a funky blender. This column is about that. Taking those "wish lists", mixing in what you have, shopping for that little something to add to it, pressing the mix button on that fashion blender, and pouring out...well a whole lot of Fabulous! Welcome to Five Easy Pieces.

The Muse.

The "Girl Gad About" I like to call her. She keeps an air of earthiness about her but a hint of glamour manages to shine through. She can always be seen giving a press conference, having tapas with friends, attending a concert, or at a movie in the park. That girl (although she is slightly older than a girl) you always see darting across the street downtown, an Up and Coming, one to be reckoned with...in time. With the changing of seasons she anticipates the fall weather, the chill in the air. But the reality is that it can be 65 degrees one day and 80 degrees the next. Tired of wearing the same sundresses that carried her through summer, smart enough to know they look out of place in mid October, she wants something seasonal, fall-y with out the swelter, transitional for the weekend's events ahead. Shall we meet our girl?

The Look.

Our Girl will most certainly be attending the Arts on Riverdale Jazz Festival this weekend. What could be better than strolling through a beautiful neighborhood, checking out all the local art vendors, and listening to some great music? The best part is this event is FREE! So she can go out and pick up a little something to wear guilt free! This outfit is perfect for such an event. With a quick change of shoes (I've given you two options) and tossing on a little sweater to combat the night's chill, she is ready to continue the fun at a bistro downtown.

Who did it right?

Amy Tarpley was spotted at Matthew Linden King’s “The Art Adhesive” exhibit at the SoChi Gallery looking every bit the muse.

50% OFF GIFT South Korean Swing and Sling CARDS! Y ears ago I was prepping my Christmas card mailing list and I asked my husband to identify a couple that I didn’t remember. He said it was a married couple that he knew while stationed in South Korea for a year on a non-command sponsored tour (code for that the family wasn’t invited). I wanted to know more about this couple that I had been sending warm holiday wishes to the past few years. My husband said, “Oh, well, they’re nice enough; but, they would screw around on each other whenever he was on TDY. She would bang other guys in the squadron and he’d screw other chicks while out of the country. They had an understanding.” Like hell am I sending them Christmas greetings anymore! Let the free-for-all begin. Some troops are crushed when they get a year long remote assignment to Korea; but, then there are the ones who can’t wait to let the good times roll! Showing up in a foreign country and leaving the ol’ ball and chain at home with no real way to

keep tabs on him is the perfect set-up for some serious fantasy and freedom. (I am mostly talking about the men here because there are more men than women in the military.) He can chuck the family responsibilities and that silly housewife for all that time. Checking in here and there on the home front of domestic serenity while sowing his wild oats overseas almost makes it like an alternate reality---a double life. My husband spent that year in Korea observing all sorts of interesting arrangements, besides the Christmas card couple. For example, there was one guy who literally had a girlfriend type in every port from Malaysia to Thailand to Singapore and almost the entire Far East. He would roll into town with his flying squadron, wave his women around in front of everyone, and spout out the sexual antics that he would surely accomplish. Oh, that’s right! Did I mention he was married and his wife wasn’t in on the plan? After several months into Don

Juan’s tour, he got served with divorce papers. The man was literally crushed. He cried, bawled, and even wailed in front of his squadron that his life was ruined---over and out. This somewhat puzzled the guys. They wondered why he even cared that his wife dumped him. She was just an insignificant burr in his saddle blanket of sexual dalliances before the papers showed up. I can only offer up the idea that his wife’s divorce papers killed him because of what she represented and not necessarily about the woman herself. His wife represented a stability and security in his life. While he was in Korea and other corners of the East on his travels, she was at home keeping the lawn manicured. When his tour ended, he knew he would be returning to nothing. That is what he was crying about. She was at home holding down the fort and she finally folded it up and took it with her. Screw him---all that while he was off serving his country and his dick across the Pacific.

COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio – An Ohio bride and ghoul have vowed to love each other and haunt and howl at the moon together at a Halloween-themed wedding. Sixty-one-year-old Jack Holsinger and 44year-old Connie Spitznagel were both made up as palefaced vampires for their scare-emoney Saturday night at a haunted house near Cleveland. The two chose the location because it's operated by the same people who own a campground where the couple met.

Show me the Gun, I’ll Show you the Money HAVERHILL, Mass. – Police said a man's attempt to rob a convenience store was thwarted when a clerk demanded to see his gun. Authorities said a flustered Adam Alsarabi fled from the White Hen Pantry in Haverhill and later was caught in the woods by police. No gun was found on him. Police reported said the 22-year-old entered the store about 12:45 a.m. Friday, and told the clerk to give him money and that he had a gun. The clerk said he could have the money, but had to show the gun first.

Abused Moose Seeks Damages Police in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, decided in August not to press charges against three boys whom they had previously believed had harassed a young moose so badly that it had to be put down. A final piece of evidence against prosecution came from the father of one of the boys, who vouched that the three could not have committed such a crime since they had been busy at the time, vandalizing a nearby church.

Ironic Felony Murder Kevin Ollie, 17, and Damien Cole, 19, completely failed in their attempted street robbery in Milwaukee, Wis., in August, when they accosted a young man and woman. The male "victim" drew his own gun, shot Ollie fatally and held Cole for the police. Later, Cole, though not the shooter, was charged with Ollie's death under the state's "felony murder" rule, which makes felons responsible if anyone at the scene should die as a result of the crime. Cole could get 55 years in prison.

Dear Mr Macon Out, I’m a democrat. Can I date a Republican with any rate of success? Dear Dem, The more appropriate question would have been “Can I date someone who is not as intelligent as me?” However, I will answer the question asked. The answer really depends on how far "left" you are and how far "right" he or she is. If you are overly liberal and he or she is overly conservative, then you are both morons and probably deserve each other. On the other hand, if you both are towards the center of your respective political beliefs and therefore more rational, there should be no problem.

Furthermore, it is probably best to keep political debates to a minimum while dating in any relationship because the majority of the time, they will leave you resenting your partner. Dear Mr. Macon Out, It’s football season if you haven’t noticed. Who is your favorite team? Signed, Leatherhead Dear Leather Head I survived the Atlanta Falcon’s run to the Super-bowl while living in San Francisco by munching on jalapeño pizza, drinking beer, wearing camouflage, and doing the dirty bird in front of every 49er I saw. How I ended up at a monastery on

top of a mountain, after our loss to Denver I’ll never know. But they wouldn’t let me in and I came back to reality. Still, every year, when the nip starts populating the air and fall turns the world a different color, I think about poor Chris Chandler playing with black eyes, and the 78 year old Steve Deberg trying to back him up. I lost a shoe the day we beat The Vikings, and I’m pretty sure it’s still in Randy Moss’ ass. I’ve got to tell you, I want those days back, and these Falcons may be the ones to give them to us. We’re bad asses but we’re still classy this year, just like Jesse Tuggle. And Matt Ryan, (though I’m a big Vick fan) may be the guy to lead us back to the big game. A man can Dream right?

New Releases

Music writer David Higdon selects his favorite new releases to review

The Black Crowes Before the Frost... Until the Freeze Released: August 31, 2009 Despite having gone through several group changes and even a few hiatuses,The Black Crowes are probably still the true heirs to the 70s rock vibe throne. They are a brand of southern rock which will no longer get radio play like their massive Shake Your Money Maker debut, but the Crowes are in no way trying to recreate a sound, but rather an experience. Where last year’s Warpaint was an introduction of sorts to new band members Luther Dickinson and Adam MacDougall, Before the Frost…is in its own realm of musicianship. Last year, the band was just finding their footing in every sense of the word, but this double release is coming from a seasoned creative unit. Before the Frost… is the album release where you will find the download code for Until the Freeze. While not a true concert release per se and at the same time not Use Your Illusion I & II, either, it is an album which was recorded live while at Levon Helm’s studio barn outside of Woodstock, NY.The playing is so crisp and so fresh, the outburst of applause and cheers from the excited audience are the only indications that this was not recorded in a studio setting. Don’t miss the back to back brilliance that is “A Train Still Makes a Lonely

Sound,” and “I Ain’t Hiding.”

ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19):

You will say things without thinking. You can be arrogant, presumptuous, and your own interests will come first. Caution this week, as you may overdo and regret it later. You are impulsive now (as usual) and must be careful not to be led astray. You can become very irritable now and this might cause accidents or quarrels. Someone very important to you may need help with a certain project. You take over and with your past experience you successfully complete it for him/her. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are practical, peace loving, stubborn, and deliberate. Taurus has a natural interest in money, and you like the finer things in life. Keep your eyes open for an opportunity this week. If you take it, it will mean hard work with very little pay. But it will pay off later, probably throughout the winter and beyond. You are not normally impulsive, so continue this and think very carefully before acting. Talk to an Aries or a Leo before committing yourself as they are wise and will lead you to the right path! GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini is versatile, fickle, intelligent, creative, quick, neat, and curious. Gemini learns quickly and has the ability to get a good education. You have a great grasp of ideas and situations. Someone very important may enter your life now so you need to be out among people. This is a good time to ask for favors or to persuade someone to be on your side. You will have to go slowly the rest of this year to make a success of yourself. Next April you can expand your desires and go forward with ‘gusto’!

Last issues puzzle answers

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancer is sentimental, sensitive, and needs to have a sense of security. Cancer is intensely romantic and has a vivid imagination. In the coming weeks it will be very easy to overdo and regret it later. Be satisfied to go at a snails pace. You are seeing opportunities everywhere but it is not good to scatter yourself or your energies in too many directions. Concentrate on one thing at a time and avoid impulse actions. You cannot rush along success, as it comes in it’s own time.

To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and box must contain the numbers 1 to 9.

GOOD LUCK!

LEO (July 23-August 22): Leo is colorful, self assured, outgoing, impulsive and expansive. It is very easy to go down the wrong path. You must think very carefully about what you want to do. You also must not overextend your finances now. You may be seeing a great opportunity to increase your finances but it may be better to wait for the winter months when you will do even better. You have a good grasp of ideas and situations now. VIRGO (August 23-Sept 22): You can be highly critical, sarcastic, & unforgiving. A very nice experience presents itself now but it may mean you have to take a different path to success. Think this over VERY carefully. You may want to wait for something more like what you have been doing. Do NOTHING on impulse. There is a confusing start to this week and you may only think you know the situation. Wait if you can.

LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Libra is artistic, musical, level headed, sympathetic, and generous. You can be gossipy, critical, and bitter. You have a good handle on ideas and situations even though others may be confused. This is an good time to redecorate as you have an great sense of style and color. A trip is being planned now? Someone very important could enter your life this week so be out and among people. New studies may be taken up now. It is time to change locations if you can.

SCORPIO (October 23-Nov 21): You are very intense, strong willed, determined and secretive. You can be willful and sarcastic, but a deep thinker with a fine mind. A new tight budget is absolutely required now. You must create your own opportunities this fall and you instinctively know this. You are very business oriented even though right now you may be a bit too self indulgent as in the past. Build your bank account up between now and spring. You will need it for an opportunity. SAGITARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sagittarius is warm and friendly. You like to talk a great deal making it difficult for others to get a word in edgewise. A person quite important to you could enter your life so get out among people this week. This is a good time to change your location is you are able. This could be a very intense week for you as situations change. However you seem to be going in the proper direction so try to relax and take things one at a time. Money spent might get replaced during October. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Capricorn is very often politically minded. Capricorn is also patient, reserved, cautious, faithful and shrewd. You have extra energy now so you need to keep busy or it can turn to irritation and easily start quarrels. What appears to be an excellent opportunity is presented to you this week. However, it will mean much work so you need to be prepared for that. It may also send you down the wrong road so you will need to examine this one over very carefully. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Independence and a feeling of freedom is necessary. Aquarius has a strong will, and is original, inventive, and will always enjoy doing the unexpected. You have an astounding grasp of ideas and situations now and are able to persuade others to your way of thinking. You seem to express yourself well this week and others are quick to jump on your rolling band wagon. This is a good time to redecorate or go shopping for new clothes since you have a great sense of color coordination. Whatever you do this week turns out excellent. PISCES (Feb 19-March 20): You are emotional, ultra-sensitive, easy going, and sociable. You are very business oriented now and may be looking for something that makes YOU your own boss. It could be almost spring before you find exactly what you want. Right now money is going out as fast as it comes in. (which is usual.) Early next year this stops and you feel better. An opportunity arises now but it is too much effort for you to take on.
