Medical Marvels: Mission & Purpose The North Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Competition was established in 2013 by The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Center for Workforce Readiness. The purpose is to encourage Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) career pathways for Long Island high school students in the 9th and 10th grades. The mission of Medical Marvels is to raise awareness of the multidisciplinary nature of STEM careers for students at all levels of academic prowess and interest, to encourage creative thinking, and to assist school districts and industry leaders to develop assets and build capacity to improve the economic future of our students in the Long Island region.

Medical Marvels: A Look Back In 2013, a total of 125 students (18 teams total) across 12 Long Island districts participated in the inaugural Medical Marvels Competition. Three teams and their teachers received awards: Jericho Schools (first place, pictured below); Plainview-Old Bethpage Schools (second place); and Lindenhurst Schools (third place).

2014 Medical Marvels Challenge North Shore-LIJ is pleased to announce the 2014 Medical Marvels Challenge that will focus on management of natural disasters.

Background According to data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the last 2 years, the United States alone has experienced 25 climate and weather related disasters exceeding $1 billion ($115 billion total) in damages and claiming 1,019 lives. The public, businesses, resource managers and policy leaders are increasingly asking for information to help them understand how and why climate conditions are changing and how they can prepare. (For more information about what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has to say about this topic, visit: http://noaa.gov/climate.html)

Did You Know? According to a report released earlier this year by United Nations (U.N.), economic losses from natural disasters since the year 2000 are estimated at $2.5 trillion.

About the Challenge Long Island students in grades 9 and 10 are invited to participate in the 2014 Medical Marvels Competition, which consists of the following components:

Hypothetical Challenge Students are presented with the following hypothetical scenario to which teams must present a comprehensive response plan including a technological/engineering component, a scientific research assessment, and public policy (public health and communication) strategy addressing the following three time frames: Before the Storm - You are the mayor of an urban center in a U.S. coastal community and have been monitoring a developing storm for about a week. The storm will make landfall within the next 36 - 48 hours and is likely to be classified as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane by that time. Your community falls within a likely path of the storm. What should you do to prepare? The Immediate Aftermath - The storm hits your community on August 28, 2013 as a Category 3 hurricane. You sought and received a declaration of a state of emergency on August 27. The storm brought winds of 125mph, and the devastating damage includes destruction of businesses, loss of a major healthcare provider, demolished homes and buildings, tremendous flooding, impassable roads, hundreds of downed trees, loss of power and water and scarce food sources. Your town is distraught and looking for help. What do you do? Plans for Recovery - It is 18 months after the storm. There have been cases of mold as well as an increase in disease from the people living in shelters. Businesses are struggling to recover and at least one healthcare facility remains closed. How do you move your town forward to get back to normal? What can be done to improve infrastructure to minimize damage?
