Healthy Habits For All

Program Overview

At Medifast, we are in the business of improving lives. Medifast team members and independent OPTAVIA Coaches empower people to tackle the challenges of tomorrow because they are focused on making positive changes today. As our Community continues to grow, the impact we make in the world grows with it.

Our growth mindset mandates that we constantly ask ourselves: What if we had the power to do more? What if we could go beyond our Community and reach others around the globe who need our help? That is why we launched Healthy Habits For All, our way of advancing our mission and bringing healthy habits to even more people, including the most vulnerable.

In 2018, Medifast pledged to donate more than $2.5 million to local and national nonprofits through 2023. Last year, alongside our Coach Community, our company donated over $700,000 to nonprofits that reached people and touched lives in ways true to our mission.

Through our partnerships, Healthy Habits For All empowers generations to create healthy habits by providing education and access to underserved communities.

Education:

We leverage the proprietary Habits of Health™ Transformational System to help children learn how to adopt healthy habits early — to help prepare them for life.

Access:

We provide the resources children need to make healthy habits a reality.

Medifast Team Members:

Wellness — it ’s not just what we do, it ’s who we are

Medifast team members are part of a dynamic, fast-growing team of highly motivated people who share a passion for promoting health and wellness. Just as our Coaches inspire their Clients to reach their personal wellness goals, we inspire each other to bring our best selves to work.

Healthy Habits For All Week: Healthy Habits For All Week kicked off near our headquarters in Baltimore, MD, at our local partner, Living Classrooms Foundation. Medifast leadership and team members assembled back-to-school bags containing water bottles, jump ropes, school supplies, a kid-friendly healthy recipe and more for 250 city students.

We closed out the day by distributing company-donated Chromebooks to students enrolled in the Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students (BUGS) out-of-schooltime program, providing critical access to technology that will allow students to adapt to the changing environment throughout the school year.

Global Reach: As the week continued, our corporate teams in Hong Kong and Singapore also participated in Healthy Habits For All Week by preparing meals for underprivileged families and children, allowing us to expand our mission to even more lives globally.

Waterfront Wellness: Waterfront Wellness is an annual series sponsored by Medifast designed to make health and wellness easy for our local community. The program supports a healthier future in Baltimore’s Harbor by offering free fitness programming and healthy living tips. Together, Medifast and Waterfront Partnership hope to instill healthy habits within our community and ignite a passion for wellness.

Independent OPTAVIA Coaches:

Creating Generational Change

Independent OPTAVIA Coaches believe in the power of helping people tackle the challenges of tomorrow by focusing on making positive changes today. Through Healthy Habits For All, Coaches can amplify their ability to provide that help, supporting groups that drive generational change in our most at-risk communities.

This philanthropic spirit is a cornerstone of our culture. Every corporate OPTAVIA event provides our Coaches opportunities to expand on the work they do with their Clients.

Convention: As part of OPTAVIA Convention 2021 registration and onsite donation opportunities, the OPTAVIA Community raised over $100,000 for worthy nonprofit partners.

Healthy Habits For All Week: During Healthy Habits For All Week, our Coach Community attended “Cook For A Cause,” an exclusive virtual cooking class with celebrity chef Fabio Viviani and OPTAVIA Co-founder and independent OPTAVIA Coach Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen. A portion of the proceeds from the event were donated to No Kid Hungry and provided up to 210,000 nutritious meals to kids in need.* Sundance: During a week dedicated to leadership development, collaboration and community building, many Coaches donated to nonprofits as part of the event registration and wrote notes with words of encouragement for elementary school children.

Nonprofit Partners

We partner with organizations that exemplify the ideals of Healthy Habits For All and transform the world for the better through education and access. Through these partnerships, we empower children and families in underserved communities to adopt healthy habits, a catalyst that allows them to succeed in other aspects of their lives. It is a critical part of our mission that extends our ability to help people everywhere reach their full potential.

Partner Spotlight: No Kid Hungry Today in America, 1 in 6 children face hunger, missing many of the meals they need to grow while feeling happy, healthy and strong. No Kid Hungry is the only national campaign with the sole focus of ending childhood hunger. Since 2018, we have partnered with No Kid Hungry to ensure that kids have access to the nutritious meals they need to thrive. The food offered through programs such as school breakfast provides a foundation for learning at the start of their day and empowers kids to make healthy eating a habit for life. By investing in school meals and other programs, we can help children get the nutrition they need and ensure they are not held back by hunger.

To date, in partnership with No Kid Hungry, we have * helped provide up to

10 million meals to kids in need.

For many children, food is their most important school supply. When kids have enough food, they do better in school. To continue our fight against childhood hunger, we work with No Kid Hungry grantees such as Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that provides funding for prepacked bags of ready-to-eat food for school-aged children. In 2021, we supported their work in Atlanta, Dallas, Miami and Seattle, funded by a $10,000 donation as part of our Healthy Habits For All Week.

Partner Spotlight: Living Classrooms Foundation Living Classrooms Foundation is dedicated to teaching children through experiential learning — learning by direct est.1985 experience — or “learning by doing.”

The organization strives to build strong, equitable, and sustainable communities through innovative instruction and opportunities to improve children’s health and wellness.

Medifast is the exclusive sponsor of Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students (BUGS), a multidisciplinary after-school program that serves second-fifth grade students who live in the city where we are headquartered. Many participants lack access to green spaces or the opportunity to grow their own food. Working hand-in-hand with Medifast team members, BUGS lets them get their hands dirty planting vegetables and raising chickens in a greenhouse that serves as their “living classroom.”

Since our partnership with Living Classrooms Foundation and the BUGS program first began in 2018, Medifast has expanded our involvement each year to support the development of many healthy habits: leading nutritious cooking classes to encourage healthy eating and hydration, building a patio to inspire healthy motion and healthy surroundings, teaching virtual mindfulness sessions during the pandemic to promote a healthy mind, and assembling welcome backpacks and donating Chromebooks. The partnership allows Medifast a powerful platform to improve the health and wellness of our local neighborhoods.

Community Gardens:

Growing Our Mission

Community gardens are a collaborative network of growers, school systems and community and city leaders working together to build urban gardens and farms. Community gardens educate students on how to grow their own healthy food and gives them access to farms and local gardens, where they can grow their own food and donate a portion of their crop to others. Medifast believes in the importance of community gardens to strengthen the heart of cities and improve the quality of life for those in underserved communities, helping to:

Increase access to fresh foods

Improve dietary habits through education

Improve mental health and promote relaxation

Increase physical activity through garden maintenance activities

Provide a great space for kids to explore their environment, taste healthy foods, release their creative energy, and experiment with nature

Building Healthy Habits Through STEM:

Challenging the Next Generation

The Legends of Learning 2021 Fall Game Design Challenge provided over 1,200 K-12th grade students the opportunity to tap into their creative energy and by designing games that build, develop and encourage kids to adopt healthy habits. By asking students to create a board, card or dice game, the challenge facilitated computational thinking, collaboration and communication skills.

The first grand prize winner was a team from Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District in Texas. Their game, PINES (Physical, Intellectual, Nutritional, Emotional, Sleep) Health Academy, asked participants to complete challenges and correctly answer health-related questions as they made their way around a board.

The second grand prize winner was a team from the School District of Manatee County in Florida. Their game, Magic Marathon, involved assisting five high schoolers to train for a marathon by challenging them on who could be the “healthiest” with their sleep, food, surrounding, mental health and exercise choices.

Looking Toward a

Healthier Future

The purpose of our philanthropic initiative, Healthy Habits For All, is to empower future generations through education and access. We continue to make strides toward creating a world where creating healthy habits can be a reality for ALL. With this knowledge, we plan to build on our success in 2022.

This year, we will focus on making our biggest impact yet under the education pillar of our initiative.

Our Healthy Habits For All curriculum, based on The Habits of Health, will be released in 2022 and is designed to teach students how to create healthy habits while they are young. With this knowledge and greater access to critical resources, we believe children will be better prepared to make healthy choices a reality — regardless of their socioeconomic background. The curriculum addresses five pillars of health and wellbeing, called the Habits of Health: Eating and Hydration, Motion, Mind, Sleep and Energy Management, and Surroundings. The lessons are easy to follow and implement and the activities are engaging for kids.

Through our partnership with Living Classrooms Foundation, we will pilot the lessons and activities with teachers. During the pilot phase, we will observe and analyze the impact of our curriculum and apply those learnings to refine our program. From there, the curriculum will be shared with a national database of millions of teachers, starting with those working in underserved communities. We hope that students will be inspired to share what they have learned with their friends, family and neighbors, creating a ripple effect that will transform and enrich lives and ultimately, create healthier communities.

As we press on with our mission, we will continue to work with our Coach Community to make meaningful progress against our goals. With the same dedication, passion and drive they use to change their Clients’ lives, we hope to continue helping kids, uplifting communities and delivering the world Lifelong Transformation, One Healthy Habit at a Time®.
