THE WATERS OF CARRATRACA The Romans knew about the therapeutic properties of the waters of Carratraca as shown on their coins with images of Tiberius, Clausius and Caesar found in the region. Great warriors came to this village in the Málaga mountains to rest their spirits and heal their wounds after tough battles. The Arabs, who named the region, also used these waters. Carratraca comes from the Arab ‘Karr-al-Krak’ and means ‘scourge cleaning’ because it was where they cleaned away their impurities and healed their bodies. The origins of the current bath date back to the beginning of the 18th century when the extraordinary therapeutic powers of the sulphurous waters and springs which surrounded the small village of Carratraca had an almost-legendary reputation, coming to be known as miraculous waters. During the 19th century, thanks to its waters, the bath became one of the most famous thermal stations of the age in Europe and its waters were awarded prizes on two occasions, once in Paris in 1878 and the other in Madrid in 1873 with the gold medal for best mineral medicinal water. Twaters from the Carratraca spring are classified as rich in sulphur, calcium and magnesium, and have an average temperature of 18ºC. Due to this composition, they are catalogued as mineral medicinal and can be drunk or applied to the body. Its sulphur content is very important therapeutically. The water is absorbed through the skin and the respiratory and digestive mucosas. With its peculiar mineral composition, it has a special anti-toxin effect for the liver, blood and inflammations as well as activating metabolic and immune system functions and regenerating skin and mucosas. OTHER SERVICES • Osteopathy: Based on having all of the body’s systems working together, osteopathic treatment consists of treating dysfunctions or blockages and, as a result, seeks bodily equilibrium, reactivating self-healing mechanisms. Different manual techniques are used to allow the body to regenerate and normalise any functions which are off-balance. • Chromotherapy session: Also known as colour therapy, this is a method for reaching harmony and natural healing. Colours correspond to vibrations which have different wavelengths, speeds and rhythms. They have a physical, mental and emotional influence which moves our vital energy to a state which promotes self-healing.

• Pressure therapy session: It uses sequential air pressure which, through the use of pressure waves, stimulates the circulatory system creating lymphatic drainage and contributing to the elimination of liquids, fats and toxins which generate cellulitis, oedemas, lympho-oedemas and other defects like varicose veins. • Magnet therapy session: Treatment which uses appropriate therapeutic magnetic fields to stimulate the metabolism of calcium and collagen, increasing vasodilation and, as a result, the nutrition of cells, tissues and organs. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, relaxing, anti-strain and general sedating effects. • Bach flower therapy: Known as floral therapy or emotional therapy. In general, it helps harmonise the vibrations of our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual fields. • Holistic kinesiology: Using muscular and proprioception tests, it analyses the movement of the body as a whole, any imbalances, blockages and the interrelation between its structural, chemical, psycho-emotional and energy levels. It provides information to the appropriate technicians who use it to bring functionality and balance back to the body. The information flows and the body is adapted. The treatment uses techniques such as osteopathy, homeopathy, orthomolecular medicine, phytotherapy, Bach flowers and energy treatments amongst others. • Orthomolecular medicine: A term used for the first time by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling. He described it as “the preservation of health and the treatment of disease by varying the concentrations of the substances normally found in the body which are necessary for health”. It is also known as megavitamin therapy. • Homeopathy: System based on the principle of similarity: like cures like. A remedy which, in large doses, produces a certain symptom of sickness is capable of curing that same problem when administered in very small doses (homeopathic remedies). • Ryodoraku Technique: Japanese therapy which refers to a system of diagnosis and treatment. Through a piece of equipment, an electrode can be used to measure or detect points which indicate energy levels (Qi) along the acupuncture meridians and whether they are balanced. It is also used as a therapeutic instrument for necessary regulation. The information is represented in a graph and diagrams, showing the patient their own recovery process before and after treatment. The basic objective is to regulate and balance the energy of the body and, as a result, improve self-healing.

THE BATH DRESS CODE
In order to have access to the bath’s facilities, do it through the bathrobe in your room, or if you prefer you can find bathrobes and slippers in the changing rooms. Arriving five minutes before is recommended in order to register and begin the treatment on time. Please contact the Director or receptionist of the Centre before booking the treatment if you have high blood pressure, allergies, any physical problems or if you think you may be pregnant. You can bring your own underwear or use the disposable one that we offer. If you wish to change the temperature of the room or volume of the music, please let our therapist know. We recommend you leave valuables in your room. If you arrive late, the duration of the treatment is reduced. The treatment will finish on time in order to continue with the next client. However if there is no other client with reservation, you may continue your treatment completing your scheduled time. The selected treatment is reserved specially for you. There will be a charge of 50% if not cancelled within the four hours just before the agreed service time. The centre’s environment is peaceful and relaxed, and we would appreciate if you avoid using mobile phone in the facilities. Thank you.
