PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
To the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club community,
On behalf of the Trustees and the Board of Directors, we welcome you to the 114th season of Polo in Paradise at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (SBPRC). Founded in 1911, we are the oldest club in the West and third oldest in the United States. As we prepare for another year, I would like to pause to thank John Muse and Daniel Walker, two of our outgoing directors, for their years of dedicated service and contribution to our club. Words cannot express the influence both of you have had, not only on our club, but on the world of polo as well. Your directors for the 2025 year will be W. Henry Walker (Chair), Justin Klentner, Rhys Williams, Kevin Nimmons, Michele Neely and David Sigman. We welcome Brian Boyd and Sy Zahedi, as two new directors.
As we enter 2025 and manage our tremendous heritage, our club strives to be the preferred venue for competitive polo in the U.S. during the months of April to October. We achieve this goal by maintaining the highest level of playing surfaces, both at the core club fields and our field partners – Folded Hills and Piocho. In addition to quality playing surfaces, we have worked to maintain high standards of conduct for membership, both on and off the field.
Partnering with the United States Polo Association (USPA) is a complement to our season programming as we host USPA tournaments at all levels of play. USPA-sanctioned events, livestream coverage, prize money, and youth programs all add to the luster of the competition.
Another unique aspect of our club is that most patrons and players stable onsite, which allows camaraderie to develop. We play hard during the week yet see each other on the exercise track in the morning or on the practice fields, where we “make up.”
SBPRC offers a complete and competitive array of amenities, including a fitness center, tennis, and swimming. We take great pride in sharing these exceptional facilities with our players, their families, and members. Our beloved pool, heated year-round to a comfortable 84 degrees, hot tub, and pristine tennis courts remain member favorites. Recently, our fitness center received an exciting revamp featuring new state-of-the-art equipment that our polo players love to use while they’re in town.
We’ve also upgraded our popular Friday Happy Hours with live music, quickly making it a cherished tradition among members. And let’s not forget our superb club parties, which get better each year.
In closing, we are excited with the direction our club is heading in 2025. We have a strong commitment at all levels of polo, and a reciprocal commitment to growth at the member levels of ProAm, Pro Pool, and Polo Academy. As I represent the oldest continuous playing family at the club since 1953, I understand the commitment to seeing our club grow in competitiveness, demand, and experience. With a first-class management team, we have all the necessary ingredients and facilities to have strong demand for years to come. We thank the membership for its continued patronage and our numerous sponsors who help to support our very special, member-run, not-for-profit club.
On behalf of your trustees and board of directors, let’s have a fantastic 114th season!
Your President,
W. HENRY WALKER President, Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club
2025 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FROM THE POLO MANAGER
For such a team sport, polo showcases a lot of unique individuals.
This past year we saw the passing of two legends in the history of SBPRC: Ambassador Glen Holden and Kenny Walker. These two titans of industry and polo, along with Norman Ringer, saved the club back in the 1970s and put it in a trust to ensure it would pass to the next generation in its current beloved form of polo fields, barns, and clubhouses.
The history these trustees lived through is incredible. They both started from humble beginnings and were part of the evolution of polo. Kenny Walker played polo at SBPRC from 1953 until his retirement from the sport. When he first started traveling to the club from Long Beach to play polo matches, he would moor his boat off Padaro Beach and row his wife and young sons ashore to arrive at the club grounds. According to Linda Walker’s fascinating history of the family, Kenny came from an age when polo players rolled their own wraps before church and sometimes missed polo games to round up cattle at their ranch. The whole family remembers planting trees around the current location of the Tennis Clubhouse.
ATTORNEY LISA L. GALLIATH
Providing personalized service to the equestrian community with over 25 years of experience and expertise in U.S. immigration matters.

bilingual immigration attorney with an equestrian background.
If Ambassador Glen Holden’s life was a book, it would be a trilogy, rather than a single volume. He went from learning how to ride in a Western saddle on the Oregon range to playing polo with the Maharajah of Jaipur and being on a first name basis with British royalty. His first polo game was at the Lake Oswego Hunt Club in Portland, his later matches were at the most elegant and manicured polo fields in the world.
Both Kenny Walker and Ambassador Holden emphasized that the time spent with family at the polo club was as precious to them as the time spent on the field winning trophies. They both referenced playing with family teams as their favorite polo memory. To them, polo was a lifestyle and they, along with Dr. Pat Ringer, were committed to preserving our venue for that lifestyle for generations to come.
I have been coming to this club since 2008 and now I see the next generation stepping forward to shine on the field and sustaining the vision of our original trustees. There have been a lot of changes to the sport. Who could have predicted cloned horses and eWheel polo back when these trustees started playing? Fittingly, Pat Ringer, the son of trustee Norman Ringer, said in his founding trustee interview, “polo is a game that will stand the test of time. There is a purity to it that technology will never change.”
As polo plays on through the digital age at our field of dreams, our players and families who enjoy the grounds we love so much owe a debt of gratitude and remembrance to the people who laid the foundations of Polo in Paradise.
Sincerely,
MELANJA JONES Polo Manager

INSIDE THE LINES Clubhouse Confidential
Santa Barbara native Sabrina Malone was introduced to the polo club four years ago, when she and Clubhouse Manager Martin Navarro worked for the company who managed food and beverage for several seasons.
In 2024, when the opportunity arose to grab the reins and take over food and beverage in the Clubhouse, the dynamic duo jumped at the chance! Inspired by the community atmosphere at the polo club, Chef Sabrina and Martin put their knowledge and experience to work. And thanks to their talents, dedication and hard work, the Clubhouse and Polo Grill are a huge success!
We interviewed Chef Sabrina and Martin to find out a little bit more about what inspires them, as well as what we can look forward to in the Clubhouse in 2025.

Sabrina, what inspires your cooking?
S: I’ve always loved to cook, even when I was a kid. I just love the process of preparing meals, feeding others, and seeing people enjoy a meal.
Sabrina and Martin, how would you describe your approach to the Polo Grill?
S: We try to keep things simple and casual while also offering something for everyone. Sunday Polo is a rush, so we make sure to put a lot of thought into a menu that works. Our goal is to offer foods that everyone will enjoy and remember.
M: We really enjoy the community feel to the polo club. And we’re always open to ideas and feedback from the members and guests.
S: I try to encourage feedback in all forms, it’s the only way to improve. I enjoy getting to know members and repeat clients at polo, you don’t get that at a lot of restaurants and it’s really nice.
What’s your personal favorite on the menu?
S: For me, it’s the shrimp capellini. There’s a story behind this dish that makes it more than a bowl of pasta for me. It was my dad’s favorite, and he passed away 8 years ago. When I was writing the menu, it felt like something was missing, and when I added that dish, it felt complete!
M: I love everything on the menu, but my favorite is the miso salmon. It’s delicious!
In addition to the incredible menu, what else do you offer at the Clubhouse?
M: We host regular Friday night live music events all winter, and we hope to continue this during the polo season. Fridays will feature polo, a happy hour menu, and live music. A trifecta of fun!
S: The club has been hosting music events on and off for the last few years, and Martin and I felt that if it was offered consistently, we could build up a following and it could really become something. It’s been very popular, and we look forward to more!
What else are you looking forward to for the 2025 season?
S: I’m excited about the new menu and offering more hot food. We’re going to bring back the BBQ to feature more grilled items. I’m also looking forward to getting out of the kitchen more! I’ve got a great team in place, which will allow me to move around and speak with our members and guests.
M: We’re also introducing some new cocktails to the menu, which will be exciting!

Chef Sabrina’s Fab Five:
Must-have ingredient? Any produce that’s in season!
Most prized kitchen utensil? My knives
Favorite regional cuisine? Italian
Go-to dish? I love interesting pastas.
Favorite local eatery? Food Trucks! I love the variety and creative freedom they show.
Martin’s Fave Four:
Cocktail: Martinarita (Classic Margarita)
Wine: Margerum M5
Sparkling: Veuve Clicquot
Mocktail: Fresh Blackberry Mocktail

The Ones to Watch

Inda Llambias
Age: 12
Inda Llambias swung his first polo mallet when he was just three years old and from the start he took to the sport naturally. With his sights set on becoming a professional player and reaching a 10-Goal handicap, Inda exhibits a level of dedication and maturity that sets him apart from most 12-year-olds.
My role model in polo is my dad, Maco. I have a lot of polo memories in Santa Barbara, Indio, and Argentina, but my favorite memory so far was the chance to play in a tournament with my dad. Adolfo Cambiaso is also one of my polo heroes, but mostly I look up to my dad.
In the future I want to be a professional polo player. I know it will take a lot of work, but I love polo, and I want to do it. My advice to players who want to improve is to always keep playing, don’t ever give up, and hit the ball!

Iñaki Wulff
Age: 12
At the young age of 12, Iñaki Wulff is already an international polo phenom. Since he was very young, Iñaki has played alongside his parents Santi Wulff and Anita Avendaño-Wulff, as well as a host of other respected mentors, in Santa Barbara, Wellington, and Argentina. Iñaki looks to continue his rise in the sport and play the best polo he possibly can.
My parents are my polo mentors. My family have taught me so much. One of my favorite polo memories was playing in an 8-Goal tournament at Patagones Polo Club in Wellington with my dad, my uncle Gonzalo Avendaño, and my cousin Benja Avendaño. I also look up to Martin Garrahan, who I played with at Club Polo One in Argentina.
If I were to pick my dream team, I would choose to play with Jeta and Barto Castagnola, and Poroto Cambiaso, because they are the greatest young players. To be as good as them, I know that I need to ride and practice as much as I can and listen to the advice of experienced players and my family.

Tanner Ebbin
Age: 15
Santa Barbara native Tanner Ebbin was 12 years old when he learned to ride and play polo. Through Santa Barbara Polo Club, he was able to make excellent polo connections and gain experience playing and working alongside some of the best. While his quick rise through the ranks has been exciting and impressive, Tanner remains determined to keep building his string of great polo ponies and improving his game.
In polo, I have learned that it is important to make as many connections as possible and always be willing to ride and work hard in and out of the barn. I have been lucky to ride, work, and play with a number of great professional polo players. I have learned so much from Pipe Vercellino, who mentored me in Argentina last fall. I also look up to Pelon Stirling whom I was lucky enough to spend time with here in Santa Barbara.
Polo has allowed me to travel to places all over the world, meet new polo players, and make great memories. In Argentina, I worked and played with Lucas Criado and Pipe Vercellino. I also played in international youth tournaments in Colombia and Chile, which rank amongst my favorite polo memories. I just spent the winter season at the Eldorado Polo Club in Indio, California where I played in the 8-Goal and the 6-Goal.
I hope to travel to even more places for polo and spend more time in Argentina in the future. I want to play with and against the best players in the sport.

Changing of the Guard
The Santa Barbara Polo Club wishes a heartfelt thank you to Danny Walker and John Muse for their years of dedication and service to the board of directors and club. John Muse became president in 2014 and served until December 2024. Muse first played in Santa Barbara in 2008 and has considered it his summer home ever since, remarking, “You can’t pick a better place to be than Santa Barbara in the summer; there is such storied history to the club.” His polo career highlights include winning the America Cup, the Silver Cup, and the Pacific Coast Open three times. In fact, he still holds the record as the only threepeat in the more than 100-year history of the club.
Danny Walker, trustee and board member, has left an indelible mark on the Santa Barbara Polo Club. His numerous stints on the board and his on-field prowess have been a source of inspiration for many. His career is studded with remarkable achievements, including wins in the Silver Cup and Pacific Coast Open. A few years ago, he faced a significant injury, and made the difficult decision to step back from competitive polo to focus on his family.

The Santa Barbara Polo Club Board of Directors takes new shape with the recent addition of Sy Zahedi and Brian Boyd. Over the past several seasons, Zahedi has become a regular player in Santa Barbara with his Zahedi Chogan Team. “As an active polo player, I deeply appreciate the club’s legacy of excellence and contribution to the sport’s growth and sense of community. There’s no place like Santa Barbara in the summer; its breathtaking coastal beauty and perfect climate make it an ultimate destination for polo enthusiasts and players. I’m excited to contribute to this remarkable club and its continued success on and off the field,” Sy remarks.
Brian Boyd’s history with the Santa Barbara Polo Club stretches back to 2003, when he first played at the club with friends Kelly Beal and Dr. Amin. Returning in 2015 to play with John Muse, Brian has been an enthusiastic fan of Santa Barbara ever since. “There’s a great vibe in Santa Barbara. The weather, people, historic clubhouse, and the beautiful fields. It’s the perfect climate for humans and horses,” Boyd remarks.

SANTI
SPORTSMAN & MENTOR

It was the summer of 1991 when husband and wife Santi and Josephina Trotz first arrived in Santa Barbara. Santi was an energetic and talented 7 goal player, and members quickly took notice of his skills. But Santi’s other polo attributes gained him even greater notoriety: his sportsmanship on the field, his loyalty to friends, his willingness to help others, and his natural ability to captain a team, to name just a few.
Now, after decades of dedication to the Antelope polo team, Santi is trading in his well-worn tournament jerseys for a broader position of mentorship within the community. In this interview we get to know all about Santi’s past and future in polo, his philosophy and passion for the sport, and his ongoing appreciation for all things Santa Barbara.

How did your polo career begin in Santa Barbara?
It’s a funny story. In December 1990, I was traveling from Argentina to India to play in a polo tournament and we had a long layover in London. So, myself and my brother-in-law, Justo del Carril, decided to go into the city. When we were there, I saw a group of people on the street, and to me, they looked just like polo players. I said to Justo, I’ll bet you lunch that they play polo. He thought I was crazy, and we made the bet. Then I went over to ask them, and they did play polo! And they were from Santa Barbara, on their way to India to play the same tournament as us. One of the players was Eric Friden, and he connected me with Ken Berry. I went to Santa Barbara the next year to play with Ken and I stayed for 34 years after that!
How long have you played with the Palmer Family and the Antelope Polo team?
I started with Geoff Palmer and the Antelope team in the 90s. We always got along well, and I remember the day his son Grant was born! I gave Grant some of his first ponies and we are like family. When Grant was ready to start playing tournament polo, of course I helped organize his team. I remember one season in Santa Barbara, we played in a tournament final with the two Antelope teams, and it was Geoff’s team against Grant’s team! Whenever Grant visits Argentina, he stays with me. I have four daughters, so Grant is like my only son.
You have been a mentor to many players over the years. Was it always your goal to coach and mentor other players?
It comes very naturally to me. It is part of my mentality, to help others and captain the team, especially when some players are younger or have less experience. All the guys who have come up playing like Jesse Bray, Pipe Vercellino, Jared Sheldon, Jimmy Wright, Grant Palmer, Remy Muller, and Agustin Bottaro, were all very young when they started playing in Santa Barbara. It is a natural part of my game to coach my teammates and sometimes even coach the players on the other team! I can’t help it. And I am happy to see them win if they play well, even if it means they beat me.
What knowledge do you think is most important to instill in polo players?
During the game, a lot of things happen very quickly. I like to make players think: why is this happening? What is the reason the play turned out like this? It comes down to reading the game. And it’s a difficult thing to learn, but also the most important. All the best players know what is going to happen next with the game and with the horses.

Do you have any special memories from playing in Santa Barbara?
I have so many! One of the best horses in America, Chocolate, was bred by Ken Berry. He gave me the horse to play for a chukker when it was only 5 years old. I told him how special the horse was, it was so natural. It was a one in a million horse. I helped Ken sell Chocolate to Valiente and he went on to become a very famous Hall of Fame polo horse.
I also played with Prince William when he came for his honeymoon with Kate. The palace was given a list of players to choose from and Melanja told me I was “a chosen one,” but I didn’t know what for! When he arrived, we played polo together. That match and when the club hosted the World Cup are the biggest crowds I have ever seen in Santa Barbara.
The 2024 Intra-Circuit tournament was also a very special memory for me. It was the last time I played with Grant in the 12-Goal, and we had never won that tournament together. We won and I was the MVP, which was very special for me.
How would you describe your polo philosophy?
For me, polo is all about relationships. It doesn’t matter if you are a Prince or a groom, I always treat people the same, with the same respect. Yes, I could make a lot of money doing a lot of things, but it’s more important to keep relationships for the future. I am still very close friends with Ken Berry, and we met more than thirty years ago.
What does the next chapter of your polo career look like?
I will help new players in polo, and some old players too. I will coach and mentor on the field and from the sidelines. This past winter, I played with Carter Thicke and Kyle Ashton, and we focused on learning more than we focused on winning. After only a few months, they both understood when I told them “Read the play,” and this is very rewarding for me.
I will help build teams and encourage people to play in Santa Barbara. I have played with Ivan Weiss in many tournaments, and this season I helped him organize his first high-goal team. It’s exciting!
I also look forward to playing with my friends and family. My daughter Jazmin is a very good player, and we always have a great time playing together.
What do you think makes Santa Barbara such a special place for polo?
The most important thing is the weather. I’ve been playing in Santa Barbara for over 30 years, and I think they only cancelled one or two times because of weather. It’s perfect. You play every week on amazing fields in amazing weather.
It’s also a small club, so you see players all the time. Many of us live at the club, with the fields and barns right next door. Even after the very difficult games, people come together to relax and have a drink and be friends. And after having a beer and dinner, I can walk to the barn and check the horses to make sure they are happy for the night. Very few clubs have such a great facility and community. This is what makes Santa Barbara so special!

Polo in Paradise
The Insider’s Guide

Polo in Paradise memories are made on and off the field. Before and after games, the polo lifestyle comes alive! The one-and-only Brian Boyd of La Karina Polo Team refers to Santa Barbara as “the greatest summer polo destination.” And we tend to agree.
Local players and their families enjoy the finest food, drink, beaches, and shopping in the world, and they are also privy to the region’s best kept secrets. Here we share an insider’s guide to the polo lifestyle unique to Santa Barbara.

Taste of the Town
For “Just Great Food” (literally, the writing is on their wall!), visit Tinkers Burger Shop in Summerland, known for feeding cheeseburgers to Grant Palmer and fellow players after matches. Over at Klentner Ranch, Jake suggests that the very best food in Santa Barbara is prepared by his mom de cuisine, Amanda. If the Klentners head out for a post-game taco, there is no better place than Rincón Alteño.
The Uretz family loves to grab a bite at Guichos Eatery in Carpinteria: “We love Guichos because you can go there straight from the barn. We have had many team meetings there the night before big games,” adds Claudia.
For a healthy lunch with a side of luxury, The Revere Room’s Cobb Salad at the Rosewood Miramar is General Manager David Sigman’s go-to, followed closely by the Honor Bar’s Fried Chicken Sandwich. Equally as loved is Loquita, where the upscale corner patio, paella, and tapas make for a terrific trifecta, according to Sy and Eileen Zahedi.
Up the hill towards the Old Mission Santa Barbara, the El Encanto raises the bar with five-star cuisine and staggering coastal views. The resort has historic ties to polo, once owned and operated by long-time player Eric Friden.
Much loved by polo visitors and locals alike, The Stonehouse at San Ysidro Ranch is one of the region’s top-rated restaurants. For something more casual, Sierra Curbelo loves to hit the cozy Bettina in the Montecito Country Mart, known for its seasonally-inspired, wood fired pizzas.
A few doors down is the local institution Sakana, offering amazing sushi, service, and sake. Hayley and Jesse Bray love the Blackened Yellowtail Press Box. The Bray’s favorite family-friendly spot is Padaro Beach Grill; young Dorothy Bray recommends the quesadilla! Nachi Viana also loves Padaro’s, second only to a team asado over at the polo barns.
Down at the harbor, Judith Baker loves to spend her free time over seafood and drinks at Brophy Bros. We hear that she is on a firstname basis with most of the staff!

THE STONEHOUSE
BETTINA
Shopping
When it comes to the perfect gift for that special person, polo locals head to Upstairs at Pierre Lafond for inspired art, housewares, books, and more. Hayley Bray loves to browse around Upstairs and then grab an iced coffee and quiche at the Downstairs Market & Deli.
Coast Village Road is another go-to shopping destination. For oneof-a-kind jewelry, players visit Daniel Gibbings. Their pieces are inspired by Gibbings’ worldwide travels and feature coins and other artefacts, as well as precious gemstones.

Just down the road, polo people love K. Frank’s curated collection of casual and sophisticated men’s and women’s wear. Their fashion experts streamline the search for the ultimate in fit, style, and functionality.

In both Summerland and Montecito, The Well draws the polo crowd to discover and indulge in one-of-a-kind housewares, garden accessories, and antiques.
Back at the club, players spend their time at Jackson Hole Horse Emporium, a one-stop shop for ponies and players. Over at The Polo Boutique, there is a plethora of polo treasures, from SBPRC hats and clothing to books and home décor.
Happy Hour
Friday afternoons are often spent at the Polo Clubhouse, watching the late afternoon matches as the sun sets on the mountains. Once the polo action wraps up, players enjoy live music alongside the culinary creations of Chef Sabrina.
Offsite, Rincon Brewery in Carpinteria is a favorite spot for players and their pooches. Local craft beer and delicious munchies make it easy to linger on the dog-friendly patio, according to Sierra Curbelo and Mia Bray.
Known for its amazing wine and hospitality, the best tasting room in Montecito belongs to Folded Hills. The Busch family knows good wine: their Folded Hils Lilly Rosé and August White are polo club faves!
At the Rosewood Miramar Beach Bar, polo people take in the amazing sunset views alongside a signature Purple Sky cocktail and some tasty fish tacos. Then wind down the day with a nightcap in the romantic and lively Manor Bar, where cocktails celebrate literary works and iconic characters.

Monday Funday
Mondays, players’ day off, are best spent at the Rosewood Miramar’s Cabana or Manor Pools. Day passes are available, so you don’t have to be a resort guest to get poolside. The homemade gelato at the Scoop Shop comes highly recommended.
When it comes to ice cream, few players can resist a weekly visit to Rori’s or McConnell’s. Hayley Bray never changes her order at Rori’s: the Salted Caramel with Caramel Sauce. Over at McConnell’s, the Llambias family love the Chocolate Covered Strawberry or the

Golfing, hiking, and surfing are also on the agenda. The best surf is at Rincon Point and Tarpits, according to Piers Bossom and Juan Curbelo. The Polo Training Center Santa Barbara annual golf tournament sees dozens of players and guests tee off to compete for prizes and raise money for a great cause. And for the best local hike, follow Polo Manager Melanja Jones to Cold Springs or Summerland Trails.
Rides and walks on the beach are also a fave, and, like many players, the hard-working ponies love to head for the surf on their day off. “My ponies love a Monday afternoon ocean swim at Loon Point,” shares Cory Williams. According to Andrew and Amza Bossom and their pups, the best dog-friendly local beach is at Santa Claus Lane.

The natural beauty of Santa Barbara Wine Country and the cowboy town of Santa Ynez also draw many players up the mountain for exploration and relaxation. For those who like to staycate, renting an electric bike from BCycle is the ultimate way to see the sites. Getting off dry land and onto a private sailboat is the ultimate Monday Funday activity: “Renting a sailboat or taking a sunset catamaran tour from the Santa Barbara Sailing Center allows you to see our area in a special way,” suggests Paige Marshall.

Celebrate
Whether it's Sunday Polo, a member function, corporate event, or wedding, there is always a reason to celebrate around SBPRC! After a polo win, you will find players and their entourage at the Clubhouse, where hours of cocktails and dancing to the beats of DJ Edu make for the perfect end to the weekend. Santi Trotz suggests that there is nothing better than a beer on the Clubhouse patio with teammates and friends. And win or lose, Brian Boyd loves a post-game burger alongside his beer!
Later, the party continues at the infamous Wildcat lounge, Santa Barbara’s best dance club known for its red vinyl and leopard print decor, bottle service, and the Bobcat Room. According to USA Today, “If you haven’t been to the Shi*ty Kitty, have you even been to Santa Barbara?”
Speaking of local haunts, The Nugget in Summerland has long been a favorite of the polo crowd, just ask Mia Bray or Kelly Smith-Remmling. The Nugget is known for its elevated pub eats and always cold brews, served with a side of Wild West ambience.
In Montecito, Lucky’s hosts many polo teams for celebrations over great food and great drinks. The Lark in the Funk Zone is another destination where teams and their families love to celebrate over seasonal farm-to-table fare.
Reflecting on his long Polo in Paradise career, legendary player Santi Trotz suggests that it is impossible not to fall in love with Santa Barbara and the polo lifestyle that if offers. According to Santi, “Everyone here wants to have a good time! The town is great, the beach is perfect, and the club is amazing. If you don’t have a good time here, the problem is not this place…it is you!”

Hooked on Polo
In the last few years, Laura Connelly, Kyle Ashton, and Carter Thicke have all jumped headfirst into polo. Moving their way up through the polo school into league play, these three represent a recent wave of club members who have become completely hooked on polo!
LAURA CONNELLY
GETTING INTO THE SPORT
Polo was my escape from COVID; I started lessons in 2020 with Jeff Scheraga. I remember Mike Uretz telling me “It’s the most fun you’ll ever have riding a horse.” That was the beginning of the end for me!
LESSONS LEARNED
Taking lessons with Corky Linfoot made a huge impact on my game. He really taught me where to be on the field. My fellow female players like Melanja, Sierra, Mia, Cory and Hope have also had a big influence on my game. They’re so supportive and they’ve helped me with my confidence on the field.
Something I wish I knew before I got into polo is to be patient. Once you get the polo bug you go a little crazy, especially when it comes to buying horses. It’s important to have someone you trust help guide you through that process. For me, longevity in the sport is key so taking your time and enjoying the process is essential!

"For me, longevity in the sport is key so taking your time and enjoying the process is essential!"
ON SANTA BARBARA
Well…it’s Polo in Paradise. The best part for me is that you have everything from club Pro Pool up to high goal, so as an amateur player you get to play on amazing fields, with the best pros and then you get to watch high level games too. I go to as many games as I can to watch the pros play and study how they handle their horses. I guess you could call me a full-time student of the game.
CHALLENGES & REWARDS
I love playing and I love that you can go to a club anywhere in the world and find a sense of camaraderie. I also enjoy the minutiae that goes into the game especially when it comes to the horses and that feeling when they’re playing their best and you are, too. Winning a tournament a few weeks ago in Bogota, Colombia was incredible. My pro, Martin Bleier, spent a lot of time choosing the right horses for me and it really paid off. When I played the Last Chance tournament in 2022, I scored an incredible goal on this little Mexican pony. She was amazing. We won the game, and I bought the horse. She’s still my favorite, her name is Coco.
For me, the most challenging aspect is playing the game! It’s like chess: there’s so much involved, and so many ways to win the play. That’s the most difficult thing for me but it’s also the most rewarding…when you get it right, that is. I don’t think anyone realizes when they start how many years it takes to master the details. That Aha! moment when you figure out a play, that’s the reward!

CARTER THICKE
GETTING INTO POLO
I grew up playing competitive sports, and my dad was Canadian, so one of my main sports was ice hockey. My good friends, the Klentners, knew I grew up around horses and played hockey, so they encouraged me to try polo. I was immediately hooked and bugged them for lessons whenever I could.
I’ve always been interested in polo and grew up around the sport. We have a horse ranch in Santa Barbara and I spent a lot of time at the polo club as a kid. I’ve been lucky to have the support of the company I work for, Whittier Trust, to be a sponsor of the club for several years. After enough summers watching, I decided to dive in and learn to play last spring.
When I started, I really didn’t want to do it alone, so I convinced my good buddy Kyle Ashton to take lessons with me. It didn’t take long for us both to catch the bug!
ROLE MODELS
I owe everything to Mia, Melanja, Jesse Bray, and the Klentners for guiding me along the way. Kyle and I have ramped up pretty quickly and it’s all thanks to the help of the SBPRC Team. Jesse also really took us under his wing and got excited with us. I am very grateful for all of their support!
LOVE FOR THE GAME
I wouldn’t say that I’m an adrenaline junkie but there is definitely something that attracts me to sports where there’s a bit of danger involved. The speed and intensity keep me excited and focused on the game. I also think horses are the most beautiful and complex creatures. Being able to spend time around them and know them on the level that polo players do is something that I really enjoy and admire about polo. When you go places, like Argentina, you go to dinner, and you have 15 guys sitting around a table talking about their horses. That’s so cool, and you don’t get that with hockey sticks or skates.
ON POLO IN PARADISE
There is an amazing tight knit polo community in Santa Barbara. It’s really unique how everybody shares this bond and connection over the sport. The staff and the members have created a really special culture where everyone feels welcome and supported. The polo is obviously really fun and competitive, but they still manage to make it feel like a family at the club, which I love.

“It’s something great about the sport—the constant pursuit of better horsemanship. You’re never done learning.”
CHALLENGES & REWARDS
Winning the Last Chance tournament with Kyle, Jake, and Luke has been the peak of my mountain so far. I want to play the 16-Goal one day but for now, I’m focused on winning an 8-Goal tournament. One step at a time!
My biggest challenge is riding the horse! I want to improve my horsemanship and create those lasting bonds and connections with my horses. It’s something great about the sport – the constant pursuit of better horsemanship. You’re never done learning. It makes it easier to sleep at night knowing that even the top pros are still working on their game.
PRE-GAME RITUALS
I always drink a grape Celsius and a Blue Gatorade before games. This goes back to my hockey days and likely part of the reason people are always telling me to slow down on the field! In fact, I’ve been told to stop drinking the Celsius before games, so that pre-game ritual that might be going away very soon!
KYLE ASHTON
GETTING INTO THE SPORT
My mom was a horse trainer, so I was first on a pony when I was 2 years old, and I was competing in pony shows until I was about 12. I eventually got bored and moved on to more full contact sports like football and hockey.
When I was 18, I moved to Los Angeles to live with my uncle, Justin Klentner. That summer, I groomed for Tim Rudy, and that was my first polo experience. I’ve always been a fan of watching polo, but the timing was never right to learn until my buddy Carter started taking lessons. When he started, I knew I had to start too! I signed up for a few lessons and here we are. Polo satisfies my love for adrenaline; it’s absolutely something I’ll continue to do until it’s not safe for me to be on a horse anymore.
ROLE MODELS
My uncle and my cousins have really influenced my polo. Justin sold me my first three horses at a great price, and he’s someone I can always talk to. Jesse Bray has also mentored me. Whenever I need something, he sets it up, whether I want to try horses or organize a trip to Argentina. There’s a lot to learn behind the scenes with polo, and he’s been instrumental.
FAVORITE MEMORIES
We won the first tournament of the season at Twin Palms this past winter. I hit a crazy 80-yard buzzer-beater shot which I can confidently say I have never seen come off my mallet before! I got the MVP award, which may or may not have been related to that shot. Going to Argentina last Fall was also a great memory. I went for 10 days, and it wasn’t long enough. We went to Palermo on the weekends and played practices at La Cañada during the week. Next year, I’m going back for 3 weeks!
CHALLENGES & REWARDS
It’s a 50/50 split for me between my love for the lifestyle and the great feeling that comes from just being on a horse. I also really enjoy going fast and competing and being able to travel to play. If this could be my whole life, I’d be super happy.
In terms of the most challenging aspect, can I say hitting the ball? I’m not great with that. I guess I would also say understanding the behind the scenes of polo, there’s so many nuances; different bits, and finding horses and pros.

“I just really want to be able to go out there and contribute to my team. Right now, I’m definitely still a speed bump.”
ON SANTA BARBARA
I love the weather and the small-town feel. It’s this nice balance of not having L.A.’s craziness but not being as sleepy as my hometown in Michigan. The club is so picturesque, and the people are amazing. Everyone is so welcoming, and the pros are super helpful. The fields are incredible, and I live almost next door to the club. You can’t beat that!
LOOKING AHEAD
I’d love to play in the 16-Goal one day, which could be 10 years away, but you never know! I just really want to be able to go out there and contribute at least a little to my team. Right now, I’m definitely still a speed bump.

POLO LEGACY KEN WALKER

The polo community mourns the passing of Kenneth G. Walker, 97, who passed away in January 2025 at his home in Buena Park, California.
An avid athlete, adventurer, and former Navy Officer, Ken began playing polo with his father and older brother as a teenager, starting at Garden Grove (Valencia Polo Club), and later at the Riviera Polo Club and Will Rogers. In 1953, Ken began playing at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, where he would occasionally ferry his family up the coast from Long Beach in his 83-foot AVR boat. He moored his boat off Santa Claus Lane and rowed his wife, Nancy, and their two young sons, John and Howard, ashore to play polo.
One of Ken's fondest memories of polo is a game that was won against the Conant family and the Crescents Polo Team on Easter Sunday in 1969. It was always Ken’s dream to have an all-Walker polo team, and this was realized on this occasion, and many others. Ken and his family bred all their own polo ponies, giving the all-Walker polo team all the horses they needed for their winning team.
In 1976, Ken, along with the assistance of Glen Holden and Norman Ringer, rescued the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club from financial disaster by finishing a failed condo development and purchasing parcels of contiguous land for stabling and a tennis club.

By 1979, the Walker family deeded all land and improvements back to the Club at no benefit to themselves.
Ken studied economics and finance at the University of Southern California. Following his military service, he married Nancy MacMillan and worked at F&M as a teller, moonlighting as a machine shop operator after hours and a farmer in Arizona on the weekends. In the ensuing years, he worked in almost every conceivable banking capacity at F&M until becoming its executive vice president in 1965.
Ken succeeded his father, Gus Walker, as president in 1979, and remained involved in various key aspects of the business. Ken melded F&M’s foundational elements of honesty and integrity with a unique vision all his own. Harnessing the power of global economic expansion and new technologies, he guided F&M across the threshold of the 21st century and into the capable arms of his two sons, Daniel and Henry, and his grandchildren, Christine and Nolan.
Ken Walker is reunited in heaven with his wife of 60 years Nancy MacMillan Walker. He is survived by his sons, John and his wife, Kelli; Daniel and his wife, Linda; daughter, Anne Nicholson and her husband, Randy; and son, Henry and his wife, Erin; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
AMBASSADOR OF POLO
GLEN HOLDEN

The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club community celebrates the life and contributions of Glen Holden, who passed in 2024 at the age of 96. A lifelong horseman, Glen’s love of horses began when he got his first pony at the age of three. He was a long-time member of The Rancheros Visitadores (Los Bustardos), an elite inviteonly equestrian organization. However, his true love was the sport of polo.
Glen Holden came to polo in the 1960s and quickly became an avid player and supporter of the sport. He was mentored by 10-goal player Bob Skene, who also became a close friend. Glen joined a group of fellow players to become an owner of Eldorado Polo Club in 1979, where a field remains named in his honor. His Gehache Polo Team played for 25 straight years in the Pacific Coast Open and many times in the U.S. Open, winning the Championship in 1993. Glen was the Pacific Coast Circuit Governor from 1976 to 1984 and served as a longtime trustee of the Santa Barbara Polo Club. Alongside trustees Ken Walker and Dr. Norman Ringer, he was instrumental in securing the future of the club by avoiding bank foreclosure. Glen loved to play in Santa Barbara until he was 81 years old.
Alongside his close friend and teammate, Marcos Uranga, Holden helped found the Federation of International Polo (FIP) and subsequently served as President from 1997 to 2005. During his term, the FIP gained the recognition of the International Olympic Committee to be the worldwide governing body for the sport of polo.

Glen was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 2002. He described his reaction to receiving the award: “I am thrilled and honored.” Looking back on his life in polo and at Santa Barbara, Glen valued the games, families, and friendships as much as he did the awards and accolades: “Polo introduced myself and Gloria to so many lifelong friends.”
Professionally, Glen Holden was considered one of the principal innovators and leaders of change and development of the variable annuity and life insurance industry in the country. Among other achievements in business, he is renowned for leading the sale of insurance products through major New York Stock Exchange member companies, as well as issuing the first interest-sensitive life insurance products in the country. His commitment to private enterprise led to his nomination as United States Ambassador to Jamaica by George H.W. Bush. He served from 1989 to 1993 and played a key role in driving U.S. policy in the Caribbean. During his tenure as Ambassador, he represented the United States on visits to 29 countries.
Glen is survived by his son, Glen Arthur Holden Jr., his daughter Geannie Holden Sheller and son-in-law Michael Sheller, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His beloved wife Gloria predeceased him in 2019 as did his second daughter Georgianne Holden Stone, and his first grandchild Holden Richard Stone in 2020. He will be remembered for his legacy in business, diplomacy and polo and missed by all who knew him.
FOREVER YOUNG WILLIAM FAIRBANKS MEEKER

Gone too soon, forever young, forever loved, Will Meeker passed away in May of 2024. Born to Margarita Fairbanks
Lande and William V. Meeker, Will truly was a global citizen. He had friends from many countries and many walks of life, all of whom he impacted in a beautiful way and by whom, together with his extensive family, he will be deeply missed.
Will grew up in Santa Barbara and throughout his life, he was an avid and gifted athlete with a strong patriotic streak. At age 14, he moved back to Paris, France, to live with his father and attended the École Active Bilingue for his first two years of high school. In the summer of his 15th year, Will attended the Marine’s rigorous Devil Pup program at Camp Pendleton and was grateful for the challenge and experience. He returned to Santa Barbara for his junior and senior years at SBHS.
After attending SBHS, he went to Santa Barbara City College where he, along with two classmates, started a Collegiate Polo Team. This team went on to compete at the national level and was very successful. Discovering his passion for music, especially the drums, Will formed a band during his time at Pepperdine University called Wolfgod. Will graduated from Pepperdine University with a double

major in accounting and international business which ultimately led him to further accounting studies and earning his CPA credentials. At the time of his passing, Will was an accomplished accountant and was CFP of BOLD Capital Partners.
Will was also passionate about skydiving. He loved the freedom, the speed, the technology, and skill involved. He eventually became an instructor and was always looking for ways to quench his thirst for the sport.
Will was a deep and soulful man. He loved God and was blessed with a great deal of empathy for others. He was a person who was fully present with whomever he was with and showed sincere interest in who they were and what they did. As one person put it, “to meet Will was to feel loved by him,” that’s how special he made people feel.
Joyfully, in 2021 he met his soul mate and dance partner for life, Margarita “Rita” Chuikova. They shared three of the most beautiful years two people could imagine with one another. Will left this earth happier than he had ever been, with a heart full of love. Will is survived by his parents, Margarita and Chuck Lande, Bill and Jocelyne Meeker, his sisters Jessica, Alena, Eglantine, Katie and Leslie, his fiancé Rita, and countless cousins, aunts and uncles.

Pipe Vercellino’s Chapaleufu Fiestera is no stranger to the winners’ circle: she has won multiple awards in both California and Florida since her arrival stateside in 2022. Most recently, she was awarded Best Playing Pony honors in the 2024 Pacific Coast Open.
Fiestera is a 10-year-old bay mare with a distinctive white blaze and an unforgettable presence. When Pipe first laid eyes on her in Argentina, he knew almost immediately that he wanted her in his string.
Bred and trained by Pepe Heguy at his operation in La Pampa, Fiestera is out of Vasca Fiestera by Dolfina Maradonna. Her name loosely translates to “party lover” which spoke to Pipe, who admits “she likes parties, same as her owner!”
Pipe describes the mare’s size and build as very typical, while her horsepower and handle are next level: “I can feel her power and speed every time I play her. She’s very quick in short plays when I need to start and stop.” What also sets Fiestera apart from other ponies is her love for the game and her dedication to her owner: “She’s always there for me, whenever I ask. In the last minute of the chukker or in overtime when I need to make a difference in the game, Fiestera is my number one choice,” Pipe admits. Look for Pipe and his favorite mare in the high-goal tournament series this season in Santa Barbara.

Club Pony of the Year
Pistol Pete
PLAYED BY PAIGE MARSHALL AND MIA BRAY
Pistol Pete’s story is not that of an average polo pony; the chestnut quarter horse was two years old when he was rescued from a feed lot in Texas by assistant polo manager Mia Bray in 2017. Seven years later, Pistol Pete is not just a great pony, he is a beloved member of the community. Umpires love to ride Pistol Pete in high goal, as much as young Dorothy Bray loves to ride him in junior polo!
This one-in-a-million pony’s personality makes him more than a polo pony, he is a beloved companion. “He’s as honest as they come and has the best heart and mind. For me, that’s just something you can’t teach; he’s really special,” Paige comments. And the Bray family concurs! Graham and Jesse started Pete, and Mia worked tirelessly to gain his trust and teach him the game. Mia admits that she was very picky when it came to selling Pistol Pete, “But I knew that Paige would love and appreciate him as much or more than I do and that was important to me.”
In Pistol Pete, Paige believes that she has found the perfect horse. “I ran the flag bareback on him, he played chukkers, and he walked around in junior polo, all in one weekend! Any horse that does it all is incredible, and I knew I had to make him mine.”

Best of luck to all teams at Santa Barbara Polo Club in 2025!

TENNIS: A FAMILY AFFAIR

TENNIS ANYONE?!
The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club welcomes members and guests for competitive tennis leagues, training, lessons, clinics, social gatherings and, as always, a friendly atmosphere. Eight championship tennis courts provide ample space for players of all ages. 2025 Highlights include the always popular summer tennis camps, Cardio Tennis, and tennis mixers!

The National Family Hardcourts Championship is a fixture on the United States Tennis Association adult tournament schedule. Last year’s event was held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego and featured one of our club’s favorite tennis families: Tennis Director Stephanie Stone and her son Austin.
The mother son duo won gold in the 2024 tournament after coming in a close second in 2023. “I’ve played a lot of tennis in my life, and that was my favorite win ever,” Stephanie commented. “The joke is that I had to give birth to my doubles partner so I could win gold!”
Stephanie has a 25-year legacy at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, and Austin grew up playing on our courts. Currently a junior at Westmont College, Austin now coaches at the club, along with his brother Max. Austin regularly competes in both singles and doubles, and admits that his favorite partner is, in fact, his mom Stephanie: “My mom is the reason I started playing tennis. She's always pushed me to be my best. There's nobody I'd rather win with than her!”
Fellow Tennis members Jill Gardner and her daughter Emily have also participated in the mother-daughter tournament for several years, winning bronze in 2023. Best of luck to all of our tennis teams in the 2025 Family Championship!

Good Luck to all Teams at Santa Barbara Polo Club, the Greatest Summer Polo Club in the World!

GAME DAY
HOW MANY PLAYERS MAKE UP A POLO TEAM?
There are 4 players on an outdoor polo team. Numbered jerseys indicate player positions: player 1 is the most offensive player, while player 4 is the most defensive. The player wearing number 3 is typically the captain and the best player on the team.

WHY IS THERE A FLAG PERSON AT EACH END OF THE FIELD?
The flag person watches the path of the traveling ball to determine if a goal was scored. The polo ball must travel in between the goalposts at any height to count as a goal. Flag up means goal scored, and flag down means no goal.
HOW BIG IS THE FIELD?
A regulation field is equivalent to the size of nine football fields and is the largest playing field in organized sports. Fields measure 300 yards by 160 yards.
WHAT ARE THE RULES OF THE GAME?
The rules of polo are intended to ensure the safety of ponies and players and are enforced during the game by two mounted umpires. An essential concept is the “line of the ball,” a right-of-way established by the path of the traveling ball. Any infraction of game rules is a foul and often results in the umpires awarding a penalty shot.
WHAT TYPE OF DEFENSE IS INVOLVED?
There are two main defensive maneuvers in polo. Like a shoulder check in hockey, a ride-off (or bump) allows players to use their ponies to push an opposing player and pony off of the line of the ball. Players may also perform a hook using their mallet to interfere with another player’s swing.

WHY ARE POLO HORSES CALLED PONIES AND WHAT BREED ARE THEY?
Historically, there were height restrictions on polo horses: they had to measure under 14.2 hands high (about 4.75 feet). Eventually this height restriction was lifted, and players began to use full-sized horses, but the sport still exclusively uses the term “polo ponies” to refer to all mounts.
There is no breed requirement for polo ponies; however, most are thoroughbreds or thoroughbred crosses. In Argentina, they cross thoroughbreds with working horse breeds, producing some of the best polo ponies in the sport.

WHY DO TEAMS CHANGE DIRECTIONS AFTER SCORING A GOAL?
Teams change ends after each goal is scored in order to equalize field and weather conditions.
WHAT IS A DIVOT STOMP?
The divot stomp is a time-honored tradition of inviting spectators to walk the field during halftime to help repair divots made during play.
WHY DO PLAYERS WEAR WHITES?
The tradition of wearing white pants originated in India when polo matches were held in the hot afternoon sun. White was considered the coolest option for players, and the tradition endures.
