EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

IGRA’s sanctioned events are listed in four categories: rough stock, roping, speed and camp events. Each category then has individual events that enable contestants to show off their event-specific skills. For a full description of each event, go to: http://igra.com/EventDescriptionsPublic.htm.

ROUGH STOCK EVENTS

Mounted on top or standing beside an animal many times a person’s size and weight, it's contestant against beast. Here a contestant attempts to outbalance or outmaneuver the animal's natural instinct to escape the contestant. These events require a great deal of skill and experience before a contestant can become a champion. Events include: Bull Riding, Ranch Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Riding and Chute Dogging.

ROPING EVENTS

Gay rodeo offers three roping events, one of them designed for beginners. The other two can be costly since success depends on a great horse that can sell for $10,000+. These events begin with the contestant in the ‘’roping box.’’ An imaginary start line runs across the front of the roping box and the chute where the calf or steer is held. If the contestant crosses this “barrier” line before the calf or steer clears the chute, a 10-second penalty is assessed and added to the time. Events include: Calf Roping on Foot, Mounted Break-Away Roping and Team Roping.

SPEED EVENTS

Speed events pit a horse and a skillful rider against the clock. Negotiating the prescribed pattern is a test of the rider’s skill and the horse’s speed and agility.

A running start is permitted in these events and the fastest time wins. Events

Barrel Race, Pole Bending and Flag Race.

CAMP EVENTS

Cowhands generally have their own definition of fun and challenge.

Prerequisites for participation are a willingness to eat dirt and the ability to hold your own with an ornery steer or goat. Sixty percent of gay contestants get their start in these three events and the oldtimers stay in because the payoffs (winnings) are the best of all events. Events include: Steer Decorating, Wild Drag Race and Goat Dressing.
