T E X A S AV I AT O R S TA K E O N N E W M I S S I O N I N A F G H A N I S TA N THE MEN AND WOMEN OF B COMPANY, 1-149th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion (call sign Wolfpack), bid farewell to their friends and families in early January at a mobilization ceremony for their deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The event, held at the Ellington Air Base Armed Forces Reserve Center in Houston, Texas, marked the final home station gathering before going overseas.

B Company will be responsible for reconnaissance and security duties within their area of operations, utilizing AH-64D Longbow helicopters in concert with their new ground training. To ensure success for their new mission, the company trained for two and a half years, rehearsing combat drills and adopting new objectives into their training standards. The result is an efficient and capable team of soldiers confident in their imminent overseas duty.

The company enjoys a rich heritage of service and achievement, having previously deployed to Bosnia in 2003 and Iraq in 2006. With each tour, they continuously garnered praise and accolades from their supported units. With any deployment, families and support systems are instrumental in ensuring a Soldier’s success. Throughout the day, unit members praised and thanked their loved ones for stepping up at home when military service takes them away. H

P E RRY H O N O R S T E X A S GUARD SMAN FOR C OMBAT VALOR TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY presented SSG Patrick D. Rogers Jr., a member of the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, with the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with “V” Device for acts of heroism, and the Combat Medical Badge during a ceremony at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas on November 1, 2012. Perry, commander-in-chief of the Texas National Guard, honored the service member’s sacrifice as well as the numerous Texans and Americans who have served during the past decade. “The young men and women of this generation have been asked to perform on battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, standing up against the forces of terror at home and abroad,” Perry said. “Without their willingness to give their all, if required, America would be nothing but a sad footnote in history, a place that held great promise, once upon a time.”

the Combat Medical Badge. The badge was first awarded to American combat medics during World War II.

After sustaining injuries during an attack that damaged FOB Salerno’s dining facility in June, Rogers is credited with rescuing several soldiers and a local national from the building and then setting up a triage station to evaluate and initiate treatment for additional injured personnel. “It wasn’t until he was ordered to stop tending to the wounded that he finally relented and allowed other medics to take care of his own injuries,” said Perry.

Rogers said he has to undergo further physical therapy and treatments for his combat injuries, but that he will soon head back to Galveston to continue life, go back to work, and raise his children. H

Later, in July, Rogers was involved in an aerial rescue operation near FOB Salerno while being exposed to gunfire from enemy combatants, according to CPT Joshua C. Aronson, the aeromedical evacuation officer for Task Force Wolfpack who wrote the recommendation for Rogers to receive the Air Medal with “V” Device. Rogers was lowered by a hoist and a steel cable from inside a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and helped with the extraction of two soldiers from a narrow ledge on a mountainside. Legislative Update This year is shaping up to be a crucial legislative year for the National Guard, and for Texas in particular. Sequestration still looms, and would have a devastating impact on the Defense Department. Regardless of sequestration, however, there are still multiple challenges ahead.

FEDERAL NGAT is actively supporting the two key priorities of the Adjutant General: 1) Protect ANG force structure and equipment through modernization, and 2) Retain/expand ARNG force structure through modernization. Both ANG and ARNG are looking for bill payers to reduce force structure, and Guard force structure is specifically at risk. NGAT will be hosting a reception for the Texas congressional delegation and staff in early February to press our agenda, and will contact membership directly to assist us in rallying support as needed to facilitate or block legislation that emerges, as appropriate. Please

$4,000,000. Since the Comptroller is budgeting for increased state income, we hope to restore more of the Adjutant General Department budget that was significantly reduced last session. The session will end in March.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY YOUR UNIT OR EVENT WAS NOT IN THE NGAT NEWS MAGAZINE? Most likely it’s because we never received any photos or information. If you would like to get yourself and your unit in the NGAT News, then please send your photos and information to ngatnews@ngat.org. Remember, we can’t print what we don’t have! Photos of NGAT members always get priority in the publication. H

The following corrections are to the NGAT News Fall 2012 issue: TEXAS STATE GUARD — In the Texas State Guard change of command story on page 9, it was reported that MG (TX) Raymond Peters was presented the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor when it should have read that he was presented the Texas Superior Service Medal. BG HENRY PROMOTION — On Page 11 it states COL Samuel “Lee” Henry was administered the oath of office by his brother Joe, a retired general officer. It should have stated that Joe is a retired Army officer. Congratulations BG Henry.

The guests were able to watch and listen to the commands issued and see the divers in action. At the start of the ceremony, SFC Shawn Dagley jumped in the pool wearing his SCUBA gear with the Guidon in hand to meet 386th Engineer Battalion commander, LTC Richard Stradinger, outgoing commander 627th Engr Det, CPT Terrence Tysall, and incoming commander, CPT Jacob Patterson. All were 15-feet deep at the bottom of the pool outfitted with the MK 21 Hat conducting a Surfaced Supplied Dive (SSD) and prepared to pass the Guidon from one Commander to the next. H
