The National Guard: Hometown Force, Global Reach

134th General Conference & Exhibition September 9-12, 2012 | Reno, Nevada

Welcome to Nevada

Welcome to the 134th NGAUS General Conference Dear Fellow National Guard Officers, Colleagues and Friends I’m so very pleased to welcome you to my hometown and the site of the 134th National Guard Association of the United States Annual Conference. Even though NGAUS has been done much in the past year, there is still much more work to be done over the next couple of days and our Nevada Guard staff and a dedicated group of volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible venues and the best entertainment while you’re here. “The Biggest Little City in the World” and northern Nevada have much to offer from sparkling nightlife, world-class restaurants, an old fashioned Silver State hospitality and arguably one of the most beautiful lakes in the world in Lake Tahoe. If you were fortunate enough to arrive to the conference early, you likely saw the amazing spectacle of the Great Reno Balloon Race, with bright colors and unique shapes filling the skies. The Darth Vader balloon is my personal favorite. If you made plans to stay after the conference, you’ll be able to see the Reno National Championship Air Races, an institution for northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts for nearly 50 years. For one week, the wide open skies over Reno are home to hundreds of aircraft, pilots and crews for the fastest motor racing event in the world! The event features six racing classes, a large display of static aircraft, and several military and civil flight demonstrations. The culminating event is the Gold Cup race on Sunday afternoon that includes the fastest of the former World War II fighter aircraft. Not to underscore our amazing amenities, but we all know the core missions of the National Guard are in question and our budgets at stake. This conference is the perfect time to work toward a bright future. I encourage all of you to go to the optional events, listen to the speakers, and hear their side of the story regarding the future of the Guard and the military as a whole. By working together and educating each other we can ensure a more informed parent service and Department of Defense. From all of us in the Battle Born National Guard, welcome to Reno and I know you will enjoy the conference! Sincerely,

Brig. Gen. William Burks The Adjutant General
