India is celebrating its 68 th Republic Day this month on 26 th of January 2017, which is also the opening day of IMTEX 2017 exhibition at Bengaluru – one of the largest machine tool shows in South Asia. Spearheaded by the Make in India Campaign of our Prime Minister Modi, India got a rejuvenated global attention, which is slowly getting its momentum. Complementing the efforts by the Union Government to increase manufacturing base in the country, state governments are also taking constructive steps for fresh investments with Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, West Bengal, Orissa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka initiating Investment Summits, Steps to Ease of Doing Business etc., which are highly appreciable. If you look back into the history, we can see ancient India was always in forefront of bringing innovations to human kind. Be it Engineering, Medicine or Art from Astronomy to Arithmetic Indians made crucial roles in early inventions which created substantial advances in the history of science and technology. India was the hub for traders across the world for sourcing better living amenities - with making leaps in cultivation of jute, exports of spices, saffron, artwork, cloth etc. till we were conquered by rulers of these tradesmen, finally becoming the British Colony for more than a decade, bringing a halt to the natural growth we achieved in course of time. With freedom struggle, Swadeshi movement emphasized on the importance of Making in India, and with India getting independence in 1947, our struggle started towards being an independent and developed nation. Tier 1 Industrial houses like TATA, Reliance, Mahindra, Godrej, Ashokleyland, Bajaj, TVS etc already are globally renowned and making our country proud in the manufacturing for its quality and precision performance. Also there are manufacturing companies in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 who works along with the national and global OEMs producing the best quality products, which are used by people worldwide. Schmalz India’s New Production Building inaugurated in Pune Baden-Württemberg Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, the Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann, and numerous deputies of the state parliament, State Minister Klaus-Peter Murawski, and further members of a 70-strong business delegation.

After an eight-month construction period, the Minister President of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, inaugurated Schmalz’s new production and office building in Pune (India) on January 24. The new building

offers an additional surface area of around 1,600 square meters – more than double the surface area of the existing building. At the official inauguration, the company welcomed the Minister President along with the Minister of Economic Affairs of

‘Making in India’: A Deep Rooted Belief of Indian Minds ‘Make in India’ is not merely a term per se. It is a motto deeply ingrained in Indian hearts since ancient times. In every age, Indian minds have only uplifted the spirit of this belief with their achievements in the fields of science, medicine, technology, astronomy, mathematics and what not, even in the face of foreign invasion into the land and its economy. Today, once again, that motto of India’s glorious past has been given a new momentum to glorify its future in manufacturing, industrialization and making it a super economy.

India has been a land full of boons for its residents since time immemorial, rich with resources, geographical variations and diverse agricultural produce. The land, however, went through a 150 years of imperial rule that squeezed the essence of pride that an Indian could have over their ethnicity. India has been the cradle of ideas and innovations, imparting knowledge to the human race ever since inception of science and technology. Indian values and ideology have always upheld the importance of education which is very much evident with ‘Takshashila’ University, which dates back to as early as 700 BC, built during the reign of ‘Maurya’ dynasty, and had advanced their research in science with laboratories, libraries and towering observatory for astronomical studies. Around the same time Bhaskaracharya successfully developed an astronomical model that accurately depicted quantities like time required for earth to orbit the sun. Aryabhatta gifted the world with ‘Zero’ and trigonometric functions that simplified arithmetic for

the world. Fibonacci sequence numbers were first scribed by Virahanka, Gopala and Hemachandra between 700-1135 AD.

We left no tables unturned in the field of Medical sciences too by presenting ‘Ayurveda’ that has been practiced and still is from 1st Millennium BC. The West has always been inspired by the East with examples still evident in the modern era. Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose has been instrumental in devising a C Rescograph, an instrument used to measuring growth in plants in the early 20th century. Cashmere wool, Buttons, candied sugar and shampoo used extensively as today’s consumer products have their roots deep in the Indian heritage. India was rightfully known as “The Land of Golden Bird”, was brimming with prosperity, knowledge which was amongst one of the budding financial power in the world. Over

The movement spread like a wildfire igniting the minds and building firm determination amongst many Indians to gain control over what they were manipulated to consume. The nationwide protest witnessed a lot of groups that took the road to burn goods that were not of Indian origin. The struggle to overcome this huge scale of economic instability continued till the end of the British rule in 1947. The newly introduced constitution that was built on the principles of British constitution also drew inspiration from Union of Soviet Socialist Russia. Our first Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru decided India into a mixed economy where we drew certain principles from capitalist economies like USA and socialist economies like USSR. This divided the economy in the state owned and public owned enterprises. With Government strategies like 5 years plan that focused on multiple social and commercial aspects like development of primary industries, industrialization, and giving out reliefs and loans on imports and exports of goods that would add value to the manufacturing sector of India. The country witnessed the rise of many talented industrialists and manufacturers who rose to the expectations to become one amongst the top names of industrialist in the world. Famous names include The Tata’s, Reliance Industries, Mittal Steel India,

Metal Impregnations India, Oil and Gas Corporation, Coal India etc. The plans induced by the Government of India focused on sustainable development of these industries, however, certain stringent rules for public sector venturing into a government owned, foreign direct investments and licensing made it hard for Indian economy to contest in the international markets. Our former Prime Minister and the then Finance Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh designed the unique LPG or Liberalisation, Globalisation and Privatisation that opened the doors of Indian economy for multinationals and foreign investors. Indians could now cruise easily through the prospects that the LPG has bought in for them. Despite many disagreements on the basis of preference for the foreign products and its brand name affecting the domestic market, LPG also helped the Indian entrepreneurs to broaden their horizons by availing schemes and services that the government provided them. In 2014, Honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi introduced the ‘Make In India’ movement, further motivating the international industries to start their manufacturing plants in India and boosting the FDIs towards the Indian manufacturing industry, thus providing a tough competition to our competitors like the Chinese Dragons who have gained supremacy in manufacturing due to

their cheap labour cost, regulations and technological advancements. To face this obstacle the ‘Make in India’ initiative has included development of new processes, infrastructure, SEZs etc which attract potential investors all over the world. The government efforts to woo investments are an addition to the developing and developed industries in India. Indians are considered to be one of the most intelligent races in the world. The theory is proved by the number of scientists, doctors and engineers that we produce in a year. The Raman effect, by Doctor C.V Raman, Dr. Homi Baba who is considered the father of Indian nuclear power, Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar, the scientist who won the patent for Turmeric from USA after a prolonged struggle, Ajay V. Bhatt who designed and developed USB as we know it, Vinod Dham who is known as the father of Pentium Chip for his contribution to the development of highly successful Pentium Processors from Intel, Sunder Pichai are few of the Indians who are making us proud today. We cannot forget Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) contribution to India’s space research projects that have been appreciated worldwide. Today, we can proudly boast about Indian goods making rounds in the foreign market and being recognized for what they stand for, quality and focus on fulfilling consumer’s needs and upholding the country’s name.

It all began in Pune, India, in the mid 1980’s, when the two technocrat brothers decided to take the plunge towards their dream.

The honourable, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi announced the much acclaimed “Make in India” initiative in 2014, that encouraged increased flow of FDI’s in the economy and assisting Indian manufacturers with policies and incentives to boost the production and manufacturing sectors in India. Infact India and Indians have been a constant participant in the world’s race for manufacturing superiority since decades and the present “Make in India” campaign adds great impetus to the same. As a part of this campaign, the Sen Brothers’ group of companies gain vital importance of manufacturing World Class Vacuum Impregnation products fully made in India. We will walk you through the story of two proud Indian young men, Saibal Sen and Probal Sen, who in their early 20’s, had

various career paths ahead of them, full of good prospects that young engineers in the 1980’s would dream of but however decided to take the rough path to achieve their goals of making a difference, by being Indian technocrats in India. It all began in Pune, India, in the mid 1980’s, when the two technocrat brothers decided to take the plunge towards their dream.The Sen brothers graduated from one of India’s oldest and premier engineering Institution, College of Engineering, Pune. Saibal Sen with an engineering degree in Metallurgy, worked with business houses like Morris Electronics (presently Mahindra Hinoday) , Mukand Iron and Steel, Ruston and Hornsby (presently Greaves Ltd) and subsequently a few years in Vacuum Impregnation Technology and Probal Sen, a mechanical engineering

graduate who worked with project engineering companies like Alfa Laval India and Thermax Ltd, before establishing their first company in 1989, Metal Impregnations India Pvt. Ltd., a Greenfield Project in Vacuum Impregnation technology using heat cure Acrylic Resins. Their father Manash Sen, a mechanical engineer from BITS Pilani, an expert and veteran in Aluminum Die Casting technology, was always available for support and guidance. The Sen Brothers embarked upon their challenging journey towards success at a very young age. The brothers who had the opportunity to live the “American Dream” and travel to the US for higher studies but they in turn decided to make their future in their homeland

Director, Sen Group of Companies How does the economic environment today differ than the days when you set out to start your own enterprise? The main difference was the government policy and availability of funds. When we started in 1989 there was a credit squeeze in all banks and funds were very difficult to get. Also, a very high level of red tapism existed and there was tremendous paperwork and licenses required to be taken. Imports were very difficult and restricted. What Inspired you to start Teknoseal and have your own impregnation sealant? We wanted to be self reliant and we also had a firm belief that we can develop products that would surpass the products manufactured by western companies. Development of our own sealant meant that we were now a complete solution provider and customers also got the benefit of reduced costs. Does the brand name behind the product play a more vital role in the determining the market placement of the same?

In 1989, Saibal Sen along with Probal Sen decided to start their own venture and entered into the niche and specialized field of vacuum impregnation technology under Metal Impregnations India Pvt. Ltd. and were able to forge a Joint Venture with IMP Germany to eventually establish themselves as one of the leaders in Vacuum Impregnation technology, not only in India but all over Asia and Asia Pacific by the mid 1990’s. Despite several challenges that the company had to face along the path of success, Metal Impregnations turned the table on competition and today are among the top five preferred vacuum impregnation companies in the world and are one of the few companies worldwide who give a complete package of impregnation equipment supplies, impregnation resin supplies and impregnation services all under one group. The Voyage The Sen Brothers built their first DryWet porosity sealing system in 1989 and installed the same at their Bhosari works to provide JOBSHOP Impregnation services to auto majors such as Telco ( presently Tata Motors), Bajaj Auto, Bajaj Tempo ( presently Force Motors ), Premier Automobiles, the Kirloskar group and others. Next, Metal Impregnations started Equipment supplies and machines were supplied Pan India to major industrial Houses, to name a few,

Hindustan Motors, Lucas TVS, Premier automobiles, Leyland group, Maruti Suzuki, Kirloskar Oil Engines and several other Aluminium and Cast Iron foundries who were all tier one suppliers to the OEM’s. Quickly climbing the ladder of success, the company became the first ever Indian exporter of impregnation equipment to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The business slowly spread across to Asia Pacific, having supplied machines to Foundry corporations located in Japan, New Zealand and Australia. They supplied a large size Semi Automatic batch system to the Toyota Motor Corporation Australia to their engine plant. It was time to set foot in the west and Metal Impregnations was now ready to also take on international competition from European and American manufacturers. The brothers worked on important projects with DRDL, Hyderabad where they were closely involved with acclaimed scientists in 1990 for developing the vacuum impregnation process for the Prithvi Missile components and with American Hard Disc manufacturing companies to develop the process of impregnation for Helium Filled Hard Discs required for very high RPM hard discs as compared to normal hard discs. Putting the Indian mark on the global map, Metal Impregnations worked with the Israeli Defence, they supplied a fully automatic system to the Israeli Military, and also to the Nissan and Peugeot foundry suppliers in Iran. As the years passed, the company diversified their market focus and had their first success in the American industry, their first customer being Honeywell Inc, wherein Metal Impregnations was preferred over European and American companies and for the first time supplied a fully automatic robotic operator less system. The system

Brand name does play a role, but we must all remember that first , the product performs and then the brand name is established after the product maintains a consistency in quality over a sustained period of time. So according to us it is product quality and consistency that matter most and these eventually evolve into branding. How has the international competition affected Teknoseal’s domestic market share? Since Teknoseal sealants are giving very good performance, at par with imported sealants and since TSP 99 is more cost effective, international competition is not affecting Teknoseal’s market share much.

“German Precision at Indian costs in Tool & Die industry”

Enlightening about the inception and the decade long journey of Fibro India, Vivek Nanivadekar, Executive Director of Fibro India, talks about the hindrances and the golden moments that Fibro India has achieved so far. Vivek Nanivadekar Executive Director, FIBRO India Precision Products Pvt Ltd

Though FIBRO India started its operations a decade ago, it has managed to become a market leader in its domain in such a short time. How did FIBRO India manage to achieve this success? FIBRO India is just not the trading company but it is manufacturing one. We are manufacturing standard parts with German precision at Indian costs. Secondly, we maintain good amount of stock for those fast moving products like Nitrogen Gas Springs, CAM units, Guiding elements etc. so that we can offer quick delivery. In addition to this we added few new products to meet the Indian customers’ demand and we strengthen our marketing and distribution channels. Nevertheless, FIBRO India has very good enthusiastic young team of people striving to achieve ‘Customer’s Delight’. In this context, please also mention the difficulties faced initially by FIBRO India while penetrating Indian market. Though we did not face many difficulties initially, it was not easy also. We had to improve our communication with our customers to create the awareness of the whole product range. We increased our customer base. We took the feedback from our customers to understand their priorities and accordingly we adapted those changes. In simple words, we tried to align ourselves with the market. But this is not the end, rather it is just the beginning.

Initially while interacting with the customers we realised that Indian market requirements of standard parts was techno-commercially different than that of Western market. So, we developed some new products to suit the local market requirements. We had to spend more than a year to develop and productionise those parts before we added them in our product range. This is never ending process and we will continue to apply our resources for such developments. Could you give us a glimpse of the entire array of products and solutions offered by FIBRO India? What would you reckon as the USP of your products and solutions that keep you ahead of your competitors in the domain? Our entire product range of standard parts can be classified in to five segments i.e. Oil less guide elements, CAM slide units, Springs (Compression and Gas Springs), Lifting elements and 5. Punches and die buttons. In totality our product range consists of more than 60,000 articles. But we do not make all of them at FIBRO India. We make only the fast moving articles meeting Indian market demand. These articles are used by Die & Mould makers in their tools. As the Indian ‘Tool & Die industry’ start using more and more standard parts, it will cut down the lead time making it globally competitive. Our USP is ‘German Precision at Indian costs backed by 60 years of worldwide rich

experience in Tool & Die industry’. Where do you see the FY 2016-17 to end for FIBRO India in terms of sales? What is your outlook for the next year? FY2016-17 has been much better than the previous one. At the end of the fiscal we would have grown by 30%. I hope the next year seems to be quite promising. With addition of new products we are targeting to grow by 25%. Despite having a base in Asian Continent, what made FIBRO look towards Indian collaboration? Asia is the most happening continent in this century. FIBRO GmbH was convinced they have to have a manufacturing base so as to serve the customer more economically and efficiently. They did the survey of China and India from manufacturing perspective and decided on India primarily due to well defined economic and legal system and the presence of more than 400 German companies in India. Today FIBRO India has proved their decision right. What is the current market share of FIBRO India products? What is you growth plans regarding product development and export? The product range being so vast, it is very difficult to estimate overall market share. What kind of effort is made in your research development part? What kind of technological support you receive from the FIBRO GmbH? FIBRO GmbH keeps adding new innovative products in the entire product range. In fact FIBRO GmbH have few patents for some innovative products to their credit since they are closely working with market leaders in automotive industry worldwide. We always get the full support from FIBRO GmbH from design to inspection procedure for the products which they want us to manufacture in FIBRO India. Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers’ Association (IMTMA) is organising IMTEX 2017 & Tooltech 2017 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) from 26 January to 1 February 2017 in Bengaluru. It’s a historic occasion as BIEC turns 10 and a new hall of 17,500 sq.mts. will be inaugurated. IMTEX 2017, in its 18th edition, is the biggest ever show held so far. The exhibition will be held in 6 halls covering a gross area of 66,000 sq.mts. Visitors from 22 countries such as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil,

Ethernet is penetrating ever more areas of our lives, and in future will push its way into the furthest reaches of an enterprise. This path leads away from the co-existence of Ethernet and bus systems for data and sensor technology towards an integrated system extending from the Cloud to the remotest corners of industrial production. In addition to standardised protocols, this also includes the appropriate infrastructure, which needs to downsize in response to ever-smaller devices and sensor/actuator systems. The demands made on the neural pathways and synapses of the industry of tomorrow are clear: both device interfaces as well as system cables must become smaller, more powerful, while at the same time more robust. THE SITUATION TO DATE? Till now, the RJ45 connector has been the epitome of the Ethernet interface in the IP20 environment. Certainly the world’s most widely used connector, the RJ45 is ubiquitous and consequently loved so much by users. Given the lack of robustness, which can take the form of a broken locking lever or occasional contact problems, however, many users have more of a love-hate relationship with the RJ45. In the face of ever-smaller devices such as flat mobile devices, displays, small automation devices and sensors, the RJ45’s size limits the potentials for

miniaturisation. Consequently, a smaller and more rugged connector is on the wish list of many users and developers, one which can also offer Cat.6A performance for 1/10Gbit/s Ethernet at the control level. THE SITUATION GOING FORWARD? With the HARTING ix Industrial®, HARTING is presenting an integrated system which meets all of these requirements. A jack size slashed by 70% compared to the RJ45 enables device manufacturers to deploy the ix Industrial® in much smaller devices which can then more easily meet the needs for miniaturisation. For device integration, a small yet robust jack with five THR shield contacts is available for maximum stability on the PCB. No big changes in design and assembly are required on the part of the device manufacturer. The socket with its five hold-downs can be soldered in a reflow soldering oven together with all other circuit board components. Only the holes for throughhole mounting must be given consideration on the circuit board. In this way, the new ix Industrial® system can be added into existing infrastructure without major adjustments. errors as well as linear and straightness errors. XM-60 captures all these errors in a single set-up. So, the decision was taken to enter the market before it was considered as a developing market by many companies. Since that time, we have continued to invest as the market has begun to realise its potential. What are the market opportunities for Renishaw products in India? How do you plan to position these products? It is clear that the market in India is already sizeable, and growing – and the government initiatives around ‘Make in India’ are further fueling the interest and growth in the manufacturing sector. As India moves away from being a sub-contract supplier base in the lower tiers of the manufacturing pyramid towards having an entire domestic supply

chain, the complexity of components and requirement for process control accuracy greatly increases. This is where Renishaw can really add the most value to the market. We have a unique offer in that we can add significant value to the machining process from ensuring that machines are capable of manufacturing to required tolerances and standards (through our Calibration offer), ensuring tool integrity and condition & in cycle metrology (through our Machine Tool offer), and then post process measurements (through our Gauging and CMM offers). Can you please elucidate the contribution of R&D in the success of Renishaw products? Renishaw PLC is founded on Research and Development, and as it has grown has continued to invest around 15% of its’ annual budget into R&D. Considering we are a c£500m business, this is a huge investment. Renishaw is not just the leader in the metrology field - it actually created many

of the technologies that are in use today, beginning back in 1973 with the invention of the touch trigger CMM probe in order to measure the fuel pipes for the Concorde Supersonic Airliner. R&D has become the bedrock of the business, and innovations such as Revo 5 axis CMM scanning, Sprint Analog Machine tool scanning probes, Equator Gauging solutions and the new RenAM500 metal additive manufacturing (3d printing) solution will all be on show at IMTEX. In addition, the revolutionary XM-60 calibration system able to calibrate all 6 degrees of freedom in a single setup is also displayed. It was reported that Renishaw was in the process of rolling out its RenAM 500M which will industrialise 3D printing? What is the update regarding that? The RenAM500 platform is indeed at its’ launch phase now, and I’m glad to be able to say that it will be present at IMTEX. Clearly this system is likely to offer a step change in the use of Additive manufacturing (3d printing) – moving it from a small batch / low volume technology into more of a serial production system. This is the beginning of what I see as a real change in this technology and its’ application and use globally. We understand Renishaw is contributing its additive manufacturing technology to the

Wing Design Methodology Validation – or Windy project in UK for which it teamed up with Airbus. Could you tell us more about this project? What kind of benefits will the new project offer to the aerospace industry in future? Renishaw is contributing its additive manufacturing expertise to a new £17.7 million project, being led by Airbus in the UK, to develop an innovative way of designing and manufacturing aircraft wings, which will encourage a “right first time approach” and reduce development time. More than 30,000 new aircraft are expected to be required in the next 15-20 years, replacing existing in-service models and also to expand airlines’ fleets as the number of air travellers increases. The project, called Wing Design Methodology Validation – or WINDY - has been made possible thanks to joint industry and UK government investment from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), supported by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI). It was one of a number of projects announced by BEIS during the Farnborough International Airshow. “Aircraft wing design is a hugely complicated process and this project will look at ways we can increase the robustness of the design

and test process while also reducing the time this takes,” said Airbus Chief Operating Officer Tom Williams. “Developing stateof-the-art technology will be at the heart of achieving these improvements and this investment is vital for that.” The project will be led by a team from Airbus in Filton, Bristol, which is a global centre of excellence for wing design, development and testing. As a key partner, Renishaw will provide its expertise in metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) and precision measurement. “This is a fantastic opportunity to work with Airbus and other project partners to develop processes that will fully test the capabilities of additive manufacturing,” said Clive Martell, Renishaw’s Head of Global Additive Manufacturing. “If we can highlight the design and production benefits of this technology in one of the most demanding industry sectors, then it paves the way for greater adoption of AM for serialised production in many other applications.” WINDY will look at aerodynamic modelling of wings, the potential for use of complex 3D-printed components in wing structures and the possibility of innovative loads control on aircraft for better efficiency in flight.“One of the key aims of the ATI’s UK national aerospace strategy is to sustain and grow the UK’s global leadership in

aircraft wings,” said Simon Weeks, Chief Technology Officer of the Aerospace Technology Institute. “The WINDY project is a key element of this aim, securing essential wing design and integration capabilities in the UK and opening the way to innovative 3D-printed wing components. AM requires an element of post processing also, so we have the capability to undertake this work – post build machining, polishing, CMM dimensional measurement and build integrity checks through use of high powered microscopes. This is all in addition to the most key aspect of the centre - Engineering design and application expertise that we bring to ensure that projects can be taken from concept to completion with the highest possible chance of success. To date we have undertaken, and continue to undertake a number of projects with a broad cross section of businesses looking to adopt AM as a technology within their business area. How do you see additive manufacturing in the global context and its scope in Indian manufacturing? A very subjective question, and one that I (and we in general at Renishaw) are asked quite regularly. This year has seen the beginning of the normalisation and real acceptance of the technology with the consolidation that is beginning to happen in the industry with the likes of GE making strategic acquisitions. The fact that these Global powerhouses are now investing in the industry proves that this is a long term future technology that will continue to evolve quickly into mainstream use. We are beginning to see the real market forming for the technology – aerospace, space,

medical, dental and high value general engineering such as nuclear are the current sectors that have realised the benefits of being able to design and build without the traditional constraints that subtractive manufacturing techniques have. To now, it has been mainly driven by the traditional high tech economies but this is beginning to change, and interest from the Indian market is now strong and growing fast. At Renishaw we are working on a number of exciting projects in India with a wide variety of applications and I expect this to only increase in the coming years as the Indian market makes the transition into increasingly complex manufacturing requirements. Our belief in the relevance of the technology in India is the main reason that we set up the Additive Manufacturing Solution Centre in Pune in 2016, offering companies a cost effective route into understand the benefits that AM technology can bring them without the requirement to make the costly upfront investment in their own machine. What are your plans, in terms of expansion, investment etc. for Indian market where manufacturing is given thrust by the government and additive manufacturing is a serious proponent of bolstering the industry? As company confidential information I cannot talk in too much detail about this point, but I can say that Renishaw have a number of potential plans in place to expand our market presence in India, both through investing in enhanced infrastructure, and

probably more importantly by further developing world class people seen as experts in the field of process control. Renishaw PLC see India as significant growth market, and we have been seeing major and record levels of growth over the past few years – however, we feel that the current market value is still a fraction of the true potential once the need for embedded process control is really understood and ingrained into the industry. Make in India has definitely had an impact – it has unified industry and as a result has improved confidence. Confidence tends to improve investment, and investment improves output – so it is definitely having an impact. The wider government strategy of investing in infrastructure projects, defence and aerospace (to name a few) are also seeing a requirement for investment in more advanced manufacturing capacity. Add to this the rapid growth in the Additive Manufacturing segment and then the future for Renishaw in India looks very promising. In summary, Renishaw will always invest where we see potential, and in general like to invest early into these growth opportunities rather than following others. The fact that we have continued to invest heavily in our manufacturing capacity and capability, expand our regional sales network and invest in a dedicated Additive Manufacturing Solution Centre I think perfectly demonstrates the belief that Renishaw has in India as a developing market of Global importance.

When IIoT Meets Reality: Key Considerations for Implementing IIoT Strategies

There have been numerous articles written about the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the benefits it can offer industrial organizations such as manufacturers and resource production facilities. Very little, however, has been written about the implementation realities of effectively assembling assorted IIoT technologies and addressing various decision points throughout the process. True IIoT benefits come not from step changes like upgrading equipment to be more efficient, but instead from driving continuous process efficiency by developing a constant feedback loop for data collection

and assessment, used to inform IIoT strategy. While there is no one-size fits all approach, this article addresses common questions to help organizations build an effective IIoTframework. Fortunately, industrial automation and networking solutions that help organizations leverage the IIoT already exist. For instance, protocol conversion capabilities allow a wide range of different machines in heterogeneous environments to talk to each other. Industrial Ethernet switches and cellular M2M RTUs/routers enable the reliable flow

of data anytime, anywhere. With these IIoTready products, data can be easily monitored by operators and engineers to provide a solid foundation for IIoT deployment. By combining the right equipment and systems with technically-savvy people, organizations can then turn IIoT hype into reality and use real-time data visibility to drive business advantage. What Is The Goal? Many elements of the IIoT can be viewed as an operational toolbox for organizations looking to gain keybusiness insight, regarding when and where portions of

their infrastructure can benefit. Several of the tools available to guide this process tie back to common technologies that include protocol conversion, visual management, remote monitoring and industrial Ethernet. The use of these technologies enables organizations to cost-effectively extend equipment lifetime and improve process visibility while pushing control to the edge. But the question for many is where to start? The first step for effective implementation is goal definition. What is the main reason for deployment? Is the organization looking to reduce costs and/or improve efficiency? Perhaps it is simply to remotely monitor systems and processes from anywhere at anytime? Once implementation goals are defined, the building blocks can be addressed, starting with existing equipment and where the data originates. What Do I Already Have? After establishing goals, it is important to take inventory of the devices and equipment within the organization. How old are they?

In most cases it is unrealistic and costprohibitive to “rip-and-replace” legacy equipment. Businesses are likely better off leveraging existing equipment by integrating industrially-fluent communication devices and protocol conversion software to tie all systems together. How To Connect? The best data for IIoT investigation sometimes comes from the most challenging places in a facility. To access and assess this information, machines and sensors from all different pedigrees must connect to collect data for an organization to be able to gain insight. While connecting equipment may sound like a mundane task, consider the fact that legacy operating equipment may have been deployed 50 years ago. How can data be extracted from older equipment without communication capabilities? Perhaps integrating sensors into the equipment or throughout a process can address data collection requirements. Physically connecting equipment via wireless, Ethernet, serial and/or fiber

cables is likely a straightforward process if the deployed equipment was designed with communication capabilities. However, A hiccup in this process may arise upon examination of the protocols being used. Are they proprietary protocols, or industry standard? A simple solution is to leverage protocol converters to communicate with IP-friendly protocols. For legacy equipment with limited or no communication capabilities, an organization should consider strategically overlaying a network of sensors to collect data. How To Send Data? Once equipment is physically connected and communicating locally, how can data be pushed outside an organization to the “cloud”? Automation and typical layer 2 networking equipment was never designed to send data beyond the local area network. PLCs, RTUS and HMIs are commonly connected via Ethernet for local communication, but that doesn’t equate to communicating to a remote data repository in the cloud. One approach is to deploy

gateways to aggregate data and negotiate with remote sites. These networking gateways, which were traditionally called routers, are being re-labeled as IIoT gateways.

level data to a server. Each has its strength, but MQTT seems to be the predominate protocol due to its ability to handle highlatency networks using a publish/subscribe architecture.

This IIoT aggregation gateway-based architecture minimizes implementation time by reducing the amount of configuration required to get an entire system communicating with the cloud. A common challenge at this stage, if required, is how to transmit data to the cloud without an available Internet connection, or where the Ethernet is maintained by IT and cannot be used. An easy-to-deploy solution might be to install a separate Internet connection, like a cellular router. A cellular router can be deployed in-parallel with control networks, and provides a highly secure communication channel directly to cloud portal providers.

How To Ensure Security?

Where Does The Data Go? The real power of the IIoT and cloud computing comes from centralizing data and then integrating applications to digest and process this information. Today numerous IoT platform providers exist. These platforms offer repositories with varying capabilities, from data storage and event processing to device provisioning and reporting. While they often can be configured for unique applications, some are purpose built for easier and quicker implementations. Regardless of application-specific features, there are a number of platform components that should be taken into consideration. For example, how is security handled from data encryption to device authentication, third-party application connections to user access? What communication protocols are supported by the cloud platform? Most commonly MQTT, HTTP and AMQP are the primary protocols for transmitting device-

Privacy and security are often cited as significant barriers to IIoT investment. Sensitive data must be protected when it is collected and transferred. Special security measures may need to be in place for the systems that collect, monitor, process and store IIoT data securely. But, security is a double-edged sword, and finding a balance between implementation costs related to time and resources combined with data protection can be challenging. Regardless, security must be a key consideration for all IIoT deployments because it impacts all layers from actual sensors to the platform itself. When determining how to ensure security, many questions need to be addressed. For instance, how many locations are connecting to the cloud? Does the implementation require unidirectional or bidirectional communication? What protocols are being used to transmit data between sites and the cloud? Does the solution support end-to-end encryption? What Is The Cost? When evaluating IIoT solutions, reoccurring costs associated with each component need to be considered. The most common IIoT solutions will typically be a combination of capital expenditures and reoccurring charges. Platform costs are typically billed based on a data received/sent model with additional costs for data storage and addon features such as control or notification capabilities. Reoccurring services may

also come into play if satellite or cellular equipment is deployed for connected equipment. Similar to IIoT platforms, data back haul solutions also require capital expenditures for hardware and on-going operational costs for the data plans. Conclusion If the IIoT is still difficult to rationalize, consider the resources and time it would take for a business with thousands of employees continuously running around collecting data on clipboards from legacy equipment and manually feeding information into a data analysis tool. When thinking about how much sensor or processlevel data to collect, consider the best output will only come from data that is both strategically and securely gathered. Simply collecting easy-to-access surface data will likely not provide the step-change required for ultimate success. This is why organizations need easy-todeploy IIoT-ready solutions and tools that can seamlessly automate data collection and mining from systems and processes to minimize inefficiencies. By more effectively gathering information, businesses are able tobetter analyze data to gain more insight into operations. This increased visibility helps drive productivity by highlighting improvement opportunities. In closing, regardless of the goal associated with IIoT implementation, it is important to build a feedback loop for all actionable data. Acyclical process should be established and re-visited periodically to ensure process improvements and cost reductions are continuous. An Overview of Machine Tools Industry: Challenges & Opportunities Indian machine tools sector is a highly fragmented one with the presence of numerous small, medium, and large suppliers, which includes international and regional players. However, when it comes to showing competitiveness globally, Indian machine tool industry is found lacking in new products, technology and solutions. With the estimated growth of manufacturing sector in the country owing to ‘Make in India’ initiative, the scenario is set to change. Rising demand from automotive, defence, aerospace, etc, is expected to not only increase demand of machine tools in the country but also push the sector for competitiveness in products, technology and precision. A flurry of initiatives by government, industry associations and manufacturers will help the sector move toward in the coveted goal.

India currently stands 13th in production and 10th in the consumption of machine tools in the world according to the 2016 Gardner Business Media survey. The country is set to become a key player in the global machine tools industry and is likely to see substantial high-end machine tool manufacturing with emphasis on ‘Make in India’ and manufacturing growth, for which the machine tools sector serves as the mother industry. The Indian Machine tool Industry has around 1000 units in the production of machine tools, accessories/attachments, subsystems and parts. Of these, around 25 in the large scale sector account for about 70 per cent of the turnover and the rest are in the MSME sector of the

industry. Approximately, 75 per cent of the Indian machine tool producers are ISO certified. While the large organized players cater to India’s heavy and medium industries, the small-scale sector meets the demand of ancillary and other units. Many machine tool manufacturers have also obtained CE Marking certification, in keeping with the requirements of the European markets. The providers in this market compete on the basis of product differentiation, service portfolio, and pricing. The intense competition among the vendors has resulted in increased investment in R&D and implementation of high

technology solutions in machine tools. The top providers in the market are –Ace Microtec, BFW, HMT, Jyoti CNC Automation, Lokesh Machines. Other prominent vendors in the market include Heavy Engineering Corporation, ITL Industries, LMW, Macpower CNC Machines, Makino India, Miven Machine Tools, Nagel Special Machines, Okuma, PMT Machines, Precision Automation & Robotics India, and Premier. The year 2015-16 has been encouraging for India’s machine tool industry. Production reached about ₹4,750 crore from ₹4,230 crore in 2014-15. Consumption touched about ₹10,300 crore in 2015-16 against ₹9,200 cr in 2014-15. India is the 10th biggest market for

machine tools. Of the market size of ₹10,300 crore, domestic production is worth ₹4,500 crore, which is about 42 per cent. To have an efficient model or mechanism for companies, they need to improve their own technology which often proves to be an out question task for them given the huge cost associated with technology development. Plus there are challenges of poor supply-chain performance, limitation in procurement and storage, bulk inventory, lack of in-house research and development facility, and pressure on margins. Global Scenario Global machine tool consumption boomed from 2003 to 2011. Despite the drastic decline in 2009, when it was down 35 per cent from the year before, consumption shoot up the next two years and in 2011 reached the highest level ever. Since then, however, global machine tool consumption has contracted in every year except 2014, including falling 11.9 per cent in 2015. The initial boom in machine tool consumption from 2003 to 2008 was driven in relatively equal proportions by Asia and Europe, but the secondary boom in 2010 and 2011 was almost exclusively driven by consumption in Asia. On the flip side, the bust in global machine tool consumption, down more

than 43 per cent since 2011, was driven by Asia, too. Initiatives for Growth There has been a rise in investments and favorable government initiatives to facilitate the growth of machine tool industry in the country. Licensing for setting up of Machine Tools manufacturing unit in the country has been given stop. Presently 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment is allowed through automatic route in Machine Tools Industry. Further, keeping in view the strategic nature of Capital Goods which includes machine tools industry as a very important sub-sector, Department of Heavy Industry launched a Scheme for enhancement of competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Industry. Under this Scheme there is a component of setting up Integrated Industrial Infrastructural facilities (IIFC) for Machine Tools Industry. Setting up of Machine Tools Park near Tumkur, in Karnataka is a major example. This is expected to augment the capacity of machine tool industry in India. In addition to IIFC, there is a component of Setting up Centre of Excellence for technology development (CoE) under

which setting up of a COE at IIT Madras with six industry partners for development of 11 Machine Tool technologies has also been approved by the Government. Development of advance technology is likely to result in import substitution and increased capacity in domestic manufacturing of Machine Tools. Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 5th October, 2015 with M/s. Fraunhofer Society, Germany, an applied research organization of global repute, on technology collaboration in the field of manufacturing including capital goods industry. Under the component of technology acquisition fund programmed of the Scheme on Enhancement of the Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector� a proposal from HMT Machine Tools Ltd. for joint research and development in the Machine Tool sector with M/s. Fraunhofer Society, Germany, has been approved. Two project namely (a) Upgradation of four Guideway CNC Lathe and (b) Acquisition of higher C Axis accuracy of Turn mill Centre in collaboration with M/s. (IMTMA), too, has taken a major role in this field. IMTMA conducts about 150 training programs all year. Over 35 companies have lent their support to this initiative. It runs the programs in Bengaluru, Pune and Gurugram. Broad domains that are covered include productivity, design, maintenance, and automation. IMTEX, the flagship event organized by IMTMA, is also a major platform for Indian machine tools manufacturers to showcase their products, innovations and get the best technology display and business enquiries from the international players. Outlook With thrust on revving up the manufacturing sector in the country through a slew of measures, in the form of ‘Make in India’, the machine tool industry is set to flourish in the short term as well as long term. Production of machine tools in India is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 13 per cent during 2016-20, according to the market research analysis firm Technavio. This growth in the overall consumption is attributed to the increasing import of advanced product lines from countries like Japan,

Germany, and Italy. The growth of automotive industry in India is the primary growth driver for this market. The automotive and auto components industry accounts for about 40 per cent of machine tools consumption in India. India is the automotive export hub in the South Asian market for some of the major auto OEMs like Ford, Isuzu, Suzuki, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Fiat. There has been a growing need to adopt CNC-based machine tools in the end-user segments to achieve precision and accuracy in the production process. This demand for CNCbased machines is expected to aid the growth of the machine tools market in India over the next four years. The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers Association (IMTMA), and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants conducted a study in the future of the Indian machine tool industry. This combined study, called ‘Enabling Indian auto component industry competitiveness; Role of Indian machine tool industry,’ forecast that the industry is expected to grow to $3-4 billion by 2020. The Study also suggested that the

growth rate for Indian machine tool suppliers could be higher, due to import substitution in the automotive industry in light of fluctuating exchange rates. The study found out that enhanced customer requirements with regards to reliability, productivity and cost require the machine tool industry to look into further development and innovation. Domestic machine tools manufacturers have advantages in terms of cost and after-sales, but technology development will be critical to meet customer requirements, fend off competition and reduce imports, the study found. Other areas of improvement needed in domestic machines include performance, access, ergonomics and aesthetics. The Study suggested recommendations for a 5-year improvement roadmap, which have been divided into immediate (within one year), near-term (1-3 years), and long-term (3-5 years) measures. Immediate measures include improving machine performance and reliabi ity, building confidence in ACMA companies using Indian machine tools, offering low cost automation solutions, and organizing seminars on various industry-related topics.

The near-term initiatives suggested were to improve reliability of peripherals, drive project management excellence programmed, adopt standards for data collection and acquisition, conduct detailed machine performance benchmarking, and develop Special Purpose Machines. The long-term plans included joint cooperative development of new machines involving ACMA companies and auto OEMs, and developing solution- based approach in IMTMA. Over the years, the Indian machine tools have improved in technology and are well positioned for medium accuracy requirements. However, to be globally competitive, areas such as reliability, solution engineering, new/improved technology and products, and delivery commitment/CRM need to be focused upon. The industry is focusing on getting into high-end manufacturing in sectors like railways, defence and aerospace. Automotive will become bigger, while medical electronics is also expected to grow. All these would require machine tools playing an important role in productivity. There is also the need to deal with largersized components and higher accuracy.

And speculating the quality of water that surrounds us and its non-uniform distribution, one can understand the grave urgency to preserve our water resources and make available portable water to those who have remained deprived of the very basic need. Stepping towards water preservation and distribution, Maruti Suzuki- Manesar, Cairn- Barmer, BASFKancheepuram have made some remarkable contribution. Following is an account for the same.

Drinking water sources in India are becoming increasingly contaminated. Most urban as well as rural communities face multiple water contamination challenges ranging from fluoride, nitrate, arsenic, inland as well as coastal salinity, and biological contamination. The worst impacted are the bottom of pyramid communities. While most households in the underserved communities have no option but to consume this untreated water, many opt for unregulated private water suppliers at prices they can ill afford. The government has tried playing a key role in financing and implementing drinking water schemes. However, about 30% of urban and 90% of rural households still depend completely on untreated surface or groundwater. Access to safe drinking water, besides being a fundamental need by itself, is also a critical measure and driver of development. With much of India relying on untreated and increasingly polluted water, the health and economic burdens that lack of safe water place are enormous. We came across an

organisation, Waterlife India, founded in 2008, which has done a pioneering work in providing affordable and sustainable safe water solutions to the people in rural and urban areas. It has experimented with an innovative business model—building and operating stand-alone water purification plants in underserved areas of India that would otherwise have no access to safe drinking water. The Waterlife Flagship program is a Community Clean Drinking Water Program wherein Waterlife partners with donor organisations and local communities to set up community level water purification plants across underserved communities in India. With funding support from the donor organization and in close partnership with the local government/Panchayat of target communities, Waterlife sets up Community Drinking Water Plants which provide water meeting WHO and IS10500 standards. Safe and clean water is provided to the local community at an affordable user fee.

The best part about this program is that the program is managed by Waterlife for a period of 10 years. A strong Outreach module is an integral part of the program. Through the 10 year program, Waterlife conducts periodic IEC and Outreach activities to build awareness and influence behaviour on the issue of safe drinking water as well as broader WASH issues. The Waterlife model builds strong community ownership due to a transparent operating system with responsive customer service and community awareness campaigns on the importance of safe drinking water, locations in convenient public settings and the training of a local corps of villagers to manage plant operations and maintenance. A community centered approach, green and environmentally friendly technologies, effective and self-sustaining operations and maintenance, and strong partnerships with local governments and leaders, are the drivers behind the sustainability of our plants. Bringing Safe, Clean Water to the Thar Desert Region of Barmer Cairn-Waterlife Program in Barmer District, Rajasthan Cairn India has significant presence in the Barmer district and is deeply focused in supporting community development. Being a region with high inland salinity, dangerously high fluoride levels and the ever present risk of biological contamination, the need for safe water is critical in this region. Cairn India, in collaboration with PHED, Govt. of Rajasthan and Waterlife as lead implementation partner has launched a large-scale Safe Drinking Water project ‘Jeevan Amrit’. Cairn plans to establish as many as 330 water purification units across the district over three years; in what is perhaps the largest CSR water project in the country. Apart from the massive scale of this project, the Cairn-Waterlife team has brought in many firsts into a project of this nature. Women plant operators, intensive door to door IEC activity, community and school awareness programs and use of innovative media such as street shows & puppet shows helped to build awareness and registration to the program. Moreover, this project has introduced large-scale SMS messaging,

direct tele-calling and also use of mass media such as radio programs to reach out to the consumer base and maximize adoption and consumption. Such activities have helped immensely in terms of demand and awareness generation and also driving community ownership and utilization of the plant. Given the spread of homes in any typical Rajasthan village, the team is also setting up a last mile delivery system. The team recently started operations from what is perhaps India’s first mobile ATW (Any Time Water) vehicle with an insulated tank and an automated dispensing unit to dispense chilled water. The project has also resulted in considerable direct as well as indirect employment opportunities with local operators being appointed,employment generated in water distribution, civil works, plumbing, electrical etc. The benefits of safe water and good health through this program will impact as many as a million-plus people in the district. Cairn was awarded the prestigious Petrotech Award in December 2016 for their Barmer Drinking Water Project.

Creating Chemistry for a Healthy and Sustainable Future BASF-Waterlife Program in Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu

The Road to Good Health Through Safe Water Maruti-Waterlife Program in Manesar, Haryana Maruti Suzuki has adopted 21 villages in the Manesar, Rohtak and Gujarat areas and is supporting a range of community development initiatives in these villages. Recognizing that safe, clean water was one of the most critical and fundamental requirements on the road to good health, Maruti Suzuki collaborated with Waterlife to implement a Community based Safe Drinking Water Program. In the first phase of the program, 4 villages, Kasan, Dhana, Bas Khusla and Bas Hariya, in the vicinity of its Manesar facility were selected for the intervention. The program included many custom value additions keeping in mind the needs and response from the local communities. Pre-launch feedback among the target community indicated a need for chilled

water; hence these plants have a provision for both normal as well as chilled water. Additionally, given the large migrant population staying without families, there was a need for smaller skus. Hence, in the Manesar plants, apart from 20 litre dispensing, Waterlife has provided smaller dispensing options of 1 litre and 2 litres. In a span of 3 months since launch, these plants have already garnered a registration base of over 1200 households and are proving to be a trusted and reliable vehicle for safe water and good health to over 6000 people. Maruti-Suzuki won the prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Award for their sustainable CSR initiatives which includes the Waterlife drinking water program.

Basic activities within Inventory Management

o Poor quality either in in-house manufacture or in supply chain – With this there will be a tendency to manufacture more and stock more. Reliability in quality is one of pre-requisites to minimize inventory level.

Inventory management is not a standalone activity but an integrated one. Many areas should be focused to control the inventory. Many areas or departments have to work together. The key areas are demand management, materials requirement planning, sales and operation planning, production planning and inventory optimization. Everyone working together managing the conflicts among themselves will lead to an optimized inventory level. Inventory to reduce lead time gap Lead time to manufacture a product consists of procurement time, manufacturing time and delivery time. All these together are also called as manufacturing lead time. On the other hand, customer order cycle is the time between receipt of order from the customer and delivery. The customer wants this to be as less as possible. Company wants manufacturing lead time to be as high as possible to plan better at a better cost. The gap between manufacturing lead time and customer order cycle is called Lead time gap. To reduce this gap, either manufacturing lead time should be reduced or customer order cycle should be increased. We can safely assume that the customer cannot be made to wait longer and what in our control is the possibility of January 2017

Wrong reasons for Inventory

o Unreliable supplier – When raw material or pre-part is sourced from outside, unreliability in supply chain adds to inventory. With unreliability, the procurement person tends to order more. o Inaccurate demand forecast – When manufacturing plan is based on forecast, accuracy of forecast has a vital link to inventory level. Poor forecast by the marketing will have an impact on inventory. No forecast is accurate. But error of forecast can be reduced by looking at past trends and closer interaction with the customer and market. Another way is, instead of depending on accuracy, have a lean production system to manufacture parts as per the pull of customer. o Poor planning –If planning of manufacturing schedule, raw material or parts with the supplier is poor, routing of parts for manufacture, inventory will get affected. Apart from the discipline by the person, taking care of production planning and control, he or she should be provided by a resource to have all data needed for planning.

o Chasing after machine utilization – There will be a tendency especially in small scale industries, to use the machine fully utilized whether there is any customer order there or not. To fulfill the measurement parameter of machine utilization, persons in manufacture tend to produce more. If we shift the focus to manufacture only what can be drawn by customer even if the machine is to be kept idle, inventory level can be reduced. In manufacturing wastes, this is called as over production. Link of Inventory to type of flow The challenge of managing inventory depends on type of flow of goods. Three types of flow can be visualized. Base flow: Constant predictable flow of goods. For example, milk supply. It is relatively easy to manage inventory here. Wave flow: Here demand is seasonable and can be reasonably predicted based on history. For example-rain coats. Surge flow: Here demand of products is highly unpredictable. I’ve worked hard over the years, I’ve been injured and I’ve worked hard through it, and I’ve made it. – Usain Bolt The 2016 Olympic games had nations from around the World fight it out at Rio not just for glitz, but for glory, and to prove an individual’s prowess and mettle. Olympic has and will always be every athlete’s greatest dream. Olympic is the one and only event that brings every nation to equality, proving void of any means of discrimination that exists. It is fascinating to see how Olympic – a sports meet of such magnitude has

managed to be untouched by politics and discrimination, hence it represents the highest degree of success, an individual can achieve. Usain Bolt (the fastest man alive) is not an unfamiliar name. He has not only broken almost every possible record in sprint, but has managed to stay unbeaten for over 15 years and that’s an extraordinary feat. In order to compose and corroborate this article, I began to watch videos and read about his life and I was left with the following statement, “Usain Bolt needed

success, but success needed Usain Bolt even more”. How did Usain Bolt make success come in pursuit of him? What made him the person the whole world knows him as and for? The answer is simple yet effective: Usain Bolt proved to be the right contender and that’s the reason success needed him. Now that you know the answer, it’s time for some introspection. Here are a few tenets from the life of Usain Bolt - The man whom success needed. • Hard Work: It’s the most used term in any and every environment and especially in a workplace, yet it’s the most disregarded term. People have heard it too many times and from far too many people, hence it has lost its value. There is no short cut in becoming the right contender because anything that comes easy isn’t worth having. Smart work (knowledge) is as important as hard work (person) and breakthrough is the meeting point of smart work and hard work. As an engineer you need to be relentless in not just trying but working hard. Over a period of time, when you get the right combination of hard work and knowledge, you will be unstoppable. • Consistency: If you’re person of highs and lows you aren’t good, the equation can’t get simpler than that. Your productivity should be consistent. There’s no two ways about it, you’re either consistent or you’re not. Usain Bolt has remained unbeaten for over 15 years and this is his 4th stint at Olympic Games. If he hadn’t been consistent, he wouldn’t have achieved this feat. Make this your thumb rule, ‘your high productivity can never compensate for your lack of consistency’. You may be the best candidate

for the job, but if you dare compromise on consistency just because you’re good at doing something, sooner or later you’d be knocking on the doors of failure. • Training & Discipline: These are the terms that sound boring. Virat Kohli, in one of the interviews was asked about his unmatched performance in the 2016 edition of IPL and he said, ‘it is the boring things that make a champion’. Training and disciplining one’s body, mind and will is the most boring thing, because it is monotonous and feels redundant. Remember it is this monotonous and boring thing that will make you a champion in your area of specialization. The problem is, not all engineers consider themselves as a contenders, they’re just happy being an employee with a desirable name to their position. There is a world of difference in being an employee and in being a contender. What do you want to be? • Recovery: There’s no proper record of how many injuries Usain Bolt has had, because he’s had plenty including the recent left hamstring injury. However, he still contended at the Rio Olympic and grabbed all the Gold Medals, that’s how much he is committed towards his recovery. All individuals are prone to commit mistakes and fall back, but it’s the recovery that matters. Remember recovery will not happen on its own, you need a coach, and he/she may be your friend, teacher, sibling, family member, boss or anyone for that matter. The quicker an individual recovers, instead of reminiscing on the failures, more likely he/she is going to

become a champion. • The Run: Your performance (work) on each and every day is as important as the entire process of equipping yourself for the performance. Your preparation shouldn’t make you complacent. Usain Bolt’s workout videos are easily available on YouTube and I strongly recommend you to watch it. I wonder if anybody could match up to him and yet you will understand that it wasn’t complacency that won him the medals it was his full and best performance in each and every lap that won him the medals. When opportunity strikes give it your best shot and nothing less. As for Usain Bolt a lifetime of training, discipline, sacrifice, diet, perseverance, consistency and focus, all boils down to 10 seconds of performance. For Usain Bolt 10 seconds is all that matters and that’s how he has stayed on top of the game. If your performance at workplace on each day is all that matters to you then you will stay at the top and nothing can change that. As an engineer, don’t just be an employee, be a contender, not just any but a right contender. Students Create a Disaster Recovery and Surveillance Robot using NI

The robot can reach, analyze and send real-time data from inaccessible areas struck by disasters NI (Nasdaq: NATI), the provider of platform-based systems that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, has mentored Anuj Verma and Shlok Jhawar (Age: 14 years respectively), students of Delhi Public School, Bengaluru in successfully creating a 4-wheeled, all-terrain, multi-purpose robot named, Recon Rover.

In their quest to do something for the society, these budding engineers aspired and built a Disaster Recovery and Surveillance Robot, Recon Rover, that can be used for surveillance during disasters and natural calamities. This robot incorporates data from various actuators and sensors in order to give the users the best control and accurate data from areas struck by natural calamities. The robot uses ultrasonic sensors to automatically avoid obstacles and prevent crash along with sensing the presence of humans stuck in disaster zones. It sends real time images and data from the disaster site while being controlled remotely.

Anuj and Shlok are class VIII students of Delhi Public School, Bengaluru. They want to pursue robotics and electronics engineering later in their careers. They had earlier participated in NIYantra, NI’s annual Student Design contest, with a simple prototype of their product. They were successful in getting noticed by NI experts and since then have been closely working with the team in shaping up their final product using NI LabVIEW (system design software) and NI myRIO (embedded hardware device for students). National Instruments provides hardware and software platform that not only helps professional scientists and

engineers to solve complex applications, but also these budding engineers to envisage and build systems having great social impact. Autonomous Weather Monitoring Drone- Initiating Innovation with SCRO In the world of tech savvies, owning a technology doesn’t sound like a big deal. Acquiring a technology from market and making use of it was too cliché for students of SRM University. The deal sounds huge when technology is seasoned with your own flavours. Flovours of engineering, creativity and an offbeat approach. Inspire Initiate and Innovate! That’s the Mantra of Student Copter Research Organisation (SCRO), the students who don’t like to keep it simple or make things complicated. They want to give just the right touch to everything around them.

The story goes back to 2013, when team SCRO decided to execute its passion for UAVs in a practical way. During the November of 2013, the team SCRO was formed which was led by Sathappan Ganesan and Sathyanarayanan. J. Along with SpaceEvaders lead by Kavithasan, who was then a final year student in the Aerospace department of SRM University, participated in the Singapore Space Challenge 2013, and won the second position for their concept of Space Tourism, across the world. In the following year during the International Tropical Meteorology Conference (INTRAMET 2014), the team learnt that the scientists around the world were launching a balloon at mooring 5.30 and evening 5.30 as per Indian time and it costed around 10,000 rupees for each sensor which was non retractable. The team then planned to develop a copter which could sense most of the atmospheric parameters which will be provided by those sensors. Parameters such as altitude limit, GPS tracking system and power system was

taken into account for thorough perusal. The concept was worked upon by the team and an Autonomous Weather Monitoring Drone (AWMD) was thus fabricated by the young minds of SCRO. The aim was to create a drone that could carry RADIO SONDE (150g) + ozonosonde(350g), was highly stable and fail proof. The motors embedded were expected to be water, dust and humidity resistant. Self cooling system in motors, high Payload Carrying capability of 4kg, high Grade Carbon fiber prop with high pitch were some of the other features that were intended to attribute to the drone. In the quest to attain a more stable configuration a range of drones, Tricopter, X Quad-copter, and H Quad-copter were developed by the students. The Tricopter used a tilt rotor mechanism for manoeuvring whereas X Quad-copter possessed larger propeller blades which made it harder to move around in confined areas. The later

developed H Quad-copter could house all the sensors to measure temperature, pressure, altitude, humidity, air quality and air speed. On 29th March, 2014, World Meteorology Day, the team got the wheels turning and demonstrated the innovation at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. The strife was highly appreciated by the dignitaries at the event. The team was invited by IITM Pune for demonstration. SCRO along with SRM Mars Rover (Team Rudra) competed in one of the most acclaimed platforms in the UAV domain, ASME LTAV in Canada and was the only team representing India on an international platform. Grabbing loads of attention, acknowledgement and praise, the project is now under speculation for further development in the model of the drone. The team is working on improving the power system of the drone so as to improve the altitude limit of it.

Yeshwanth Napoleon Student, SCRO I worked on the flow analysis, structural analysis and design optimisation of the Autonomous Weather Monitoring Copter. Modelling the problem for flow analysis was quite challenging but I had invaluable guidance from Assistant Professor Ravichandrakumar sir, and also our team’s faculty in charge Vinoth kumar sir. The project was developed under the aegis of the Director of Research, SRM University and it goes without saying that his unwavering support helped us cross many a hurdle. Over the course of this project, I had the privilege to interact with the top scientists and researchers in the country. Thus, being a part of this project was nothing short of an amazing experience.

Development of the next model Idea Taking Shape With an interested research institute and inspired team we started developing a drone that fits the requirement of NARL, which at that point wasn’t exactly clear, but we had a rough ideal for the prototype. Presenting the Idea We were invited to a presentation and demonstration in NARL facility Gadanki, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The presentation highlighted the potential of drone in such application, capabilities of the current

With the new requirement in hand we focused on improving the prototype, this model was capable of flying at higher wind gust and collect crucial data such as Relative humidity, temperature , pressure and air composition at various altitudes which is customisable. he drone can be programmed to fly in any trajectory desired and also since it is reusable, it is a no brainer that this technology can someday replace the old systems. The biggest challenge / restriction that everyone faces is that the battery (power storage) technology needs to be improved.

Views In my opinion the weather monitoring drone project is one of the most successful project of team SCRO, It was quite a challenge guiding and supporting a team of huge diversity and versatility. The overall experience being a part of this team have given me experience and crucial skills such as being part of a team , interacting with people from different walks of life, Working under pressure , sticking to strict deadlines , meeting desired quality and understanding everyone’s perspective. These skills have really helped me in my career till now. I thank all at SRM University for their guidance and helping me gain knowledge though practical experiences. I believe every student must involve themselves in such research projects; this would give them the skills that the competitive world demands.

They offer benefits-typically simpler, more convenient, and less expensive products that appeal to totally new or less-demanding customers. TATA’s NANO is one of the examples. It changed the automobile business. It broke the pricing concept at which the car can be available. This at end changed the design, the manufacturing and even society’s perception towards a car. Though failed initially, business of low cost cars is taking a shape.

Taking banking system at the doors of last man of our nation needed many so called rigid banking norms to be broken and redefined. But our nation has done it. So if you want to create a really successful business, you have to do more than win your share of customers or just control costs. You have to go beyond - you have to break the rules. You have to redefine the way business is done, product is prepared or service is offered drastically. We are not suggesting any unethical ways or breaking of laws. It is about breaking traditional business norms & thought processes. The rewards are far more in disruptive innovation but one needs more risk appetite to do conceptualize and executive. Why Innovation? “Not for me or not now, may be sometime next year” attitude is barring us from bringing innovation culture in our

organization. But dear all, the world around us is changing every minute. With resources available to many, new products, processes and services are entering the business world every minute. So, there is no alternative for the existing ones to adapt to culture of innovation. Incorporating innovation in your business will help you save time, money and gives you advantage over competitors. How to bring Disruptive innovation in my organization? Be a good listener. Biomedical Study to Help Maintain Human Health Researchers at Stanford University Medical School have been conducting a study on a concept of wearable sensor that can monitor and predict any changes in the heart rate, activity, skin temperature and other variables can reveal a lot about what is going on inside a person, including the onset of infection, inflammation and even insulin resistance. One of the important components of the study also includes establishing a standard range of normal baseline value for each person involved in the initial study process. Thermoplastic widens Scope in Designing Exhausts Thermoplastics are the new dimension in the world of electroplating. It has widened the scope in designing better alternatives for the automobile exhausts. Covestro has developed Apec 150 PG (planting grade) based on a copolycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copoplymer (PC-HT+ABS), a plastic that is heat-resistant and perfectly suitable for electroplating. The Vita B softening temperature is roughly 146 degree Celsius, which is 35 times higher than that of electroplatable standard polycarbonate/ ABS blends. The idea of making an exhaust trim part from plastic was first pitched by Gerhardi Kunststofftechnik which was then shaped to January 2017

Since the first ROBOCON in 2002, the participation in the event by Indian Engineering Colleges has increased. What according to are the reasons for this increase? More than a decade earlier Robotics was definitely not considered a priority by engineering students as well as the industry. Even today it is not a part of mainstream academics in India. So the major challenge

for us was to spread awareness about robotics and attract maximum participation in the contest. MIT was convinced that Robotics is the future for engineering students and so it was necessary to have a long term vision. The faculty members and volunteers of the host college at MIT Group of Institutes contacted every college in India from then on to spread awareness on Robotics. They also organized

training sessions, workshops to facilitate and encourage students to take part. So, every year the contest started gathering momentum so much so that a decade later it has become a matter of prestige amongst all IITs, NITs and leading Engineering colleges of India to win Robocon. For this year’s nationals, over 130 teams will be participating, which indeed exemplifies our success story.

Has MIT been associated with ROBOCON since its inception? No. As a Member of ABU, Doordarshan started this contest in the year 2002 in India; initially along with IIT Kanpur and Nirma Institute. The response for the initial years was quite low. In the year 2005, Doordarshan collaborated with MIT group, since then till date it has become integral part of the MIT Calendar. Since 2005 till date MIT Group has taken the initiative along with Doordarshan and made the event popular and successful by their excellent management and teamwork. Since 2008 MIT Academy of Engineering has taken over the responsibility of the event.
