■ Our son, Sgt James Long, was invited to return to his old school, Ivanhoe Grammar, last week to be presented with the Dr Oswald T Kyle Award for outstanding community service. James flew in from Townsville to receive the award from School Chairman Peter Kempen and Principal Rod Fraser. The award recognised James’s work as section commander with the First Batallion, Royal Australian Regiment. He was section commander with the 1RAR rehabilitation and training platoon, facilitating soldiers recovery from injuries sustained on operations and during training. He was able to assist members in returning to work after injury, transfer to other Corps or transition out of the Defence Force after rehabilitation. For meritorious achievement, Sgt Long was awarded the Conspicuoys Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List this year. Dr Kyle attended the School from 1923 to 1929, and after graduation began 40 years of service to the Tasmanian community. Awarded the OBE, Dr Kyle worked tirelessly for the community, especially with health care. He died in 1980.

Off the air ■ I will be missing from the regular Wednesday radio spot with Denis Scanlan on Geelong’s Pulse FM 94.7 this morning (Wed.). Observer Treasury Thoughts For The Week

● George Coppin ■ Many thanks for publishing comments re George Coppin. Someone explained why his parents were ‘strolling players’. Obviously there was no radio or TV in those days and actors had to be very good to get a theatre. Theatres were scarce and you had to make a name as a 'strolling player' to get a part on a real stage. It was suggested that was why George married Maria ... because she was an actress of repute and Sydney audiences flocked to see her. Did you know her dress caught fire on stage and she died of burns? For Melbourne, George Coppin had a pre-fabricated theatre built of metal, hence it was nick named ‘the Iron Pot’. It was shiopped to Melbourne in parts and bolted together in Bourke Str. Incidentally, in your pictures of Richmond (Melbourne Observer, Aug. 14) you had one of Cremorne Gardens. That was where Coppin opened a fair ground ... people flocked there on the steam paddle wheelers which plied the Yarra betweenthe City and Richmond. It was the predecessor of Luna Park. Not only did George Coppin build the Old Colonist's Homes at Rushall, he partnered the Minister of Scots Church in selling £10 shares and with the money built Gordon House where beds were provided for single men. The Coppin Masonic Lodge in East Brunswick bears his name. The Old Colonists' Association sent me this information. - Dan Webb, Melbourne
