Book on Mrs Kelly ● Cindy McLeish ■ Local MP, Cindy McLeish, showed the value of persistence, when official news came through that electronic 40kmh speed signs will be installed in front of Yea Primary School. It follows her twoyear campaign to improve road safety. "I am delighted that the campaign to improve safety in Yea has been recognised by the Victorian Government," Ms McLeish said. Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, has indicated that the new speed signs will be installed soon.

School ignored

■ "VicRoads have considered the circumstances of the location and in recognition of the traffic volume on the (Melba) highway, the often inclement weather and the presence of the flagged crossing, will be installing electronic speed signs to enhance the prominence of the school speed zone,” Mr Donnellan said. Ms McLeish said that in spite of the good news, action should have been taken earlier. "For some time, the school had been trying to deal with VicRoads on this matter, with little success. Representatives of the school

felt like they were being ignored,” Ms McLeish said. "On numerous occasions I have asked the government to commit to improving safety for students and residents in our region and have organised a petition calling for action." "At every turn the Government has been obstinate and has refused to listen. This is a great breakthrough for our community," Ms McLeish said.

■ Steel uprights for the Black Saturday Bushfire Memorial signs in Bald Spur Rd, St Andrews have been stolen. Thieves would have needed equipment to remove the metal uprights which appear to have been cut off close to the base.

Caught short ■ Male patrons at the Alexandra Race Club meeting on Saturday voiced their disgust when one man used the wash basin as a urinal late on Saturday afternoon. Out came a number of mobile phones to take photos to shame the over-refreshed racegoer.

Grand gesture

CEACA chase

■ CEACA - the Continuing Education and Arts Centre of Alexandra - appealed for 800 participants to donate, to meet a shortfall in government funding. Chair Virginia Linton-Smith said a well attended Committee of Management meeting decided to go to the people for sipport. “What is principally needed immediately is the interest and participation of all members of CEACA. If funds are not found to bridge the gap this year, a severe curtailment of activities may have to be considered.”

Rodney’s record

■ Yea swimmer Rodney Lawson broke new Australian national record time for the 50mtre breast-stroke sprint in Perth. Rodney, of Francis St, Yea, was competing in teh Australian Swimming Championships at Beattie Park, against Olympic swimmer Peter Evans.
