500 locally manufactured Solar Power Supply Units have been installed in informal settlements in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality thanks to local innovation and partnership between industry, entrepreneurs and the municipality. This locally designed and manufactured innovation is being installed by local entrepreneurs who have been trained by local manufacturer Microcare to install the Solar Power Supply units in the bay. Currently over 250 units have already been installed in the poorer communities of Nelson Mandela Bay as many locals enjoy electricity in their homes for the first time. Designed and developed in Nelson Mandela Bay by Microcare Solar Components, the unit is a 12V Solar Power supply incorporating a 100W PV panel charging a 100Ah battery. The unit supplies power for

5 LED lights, 2 USB charging ports and a 12V socket ideal for a radio or 12V TV. The 12V Solar Power Unit uses Microcare’s leading MPPT technol-

ogy to extract maximum power from the sun to charge the batteries. Power is then available to provide, as a priority, lights for the home, and secondary a USB charging area

for cell phones and the 12V socket which can be used for varied 12V appliances. Newest merchant ship to fly SA flag

he Port of Port Elizabeth is the proud home port of a third ship to be registered on the South African Ships Register. This marks another step in South Africa’s drive to become a recognised Maritime Nation in line with the government’s Operation Phakisa initiative which aims to unlock the potential of the country’s ocean economy. Early in July 2016, oil tanker MT Lefkas docked at the port’s berth 100 where a ceremonial plaque exchange ceremony was officiated. The merchant vessel was previously registered under the flag of Liberia but will be using the Port of Port Elizabeth to provide a new offshore bunkering operation in Algoa Bay. In December 2012 the concept of attracting vessels to the Algoa Bay region was identified as an opportunity to grow the maritime industry in the region. In bringing this initiative to fruition, the South

African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Aegean Bunkering Marine Services worked together to formalise the concept. Aegean subsequently embarked on a rigorous process of securing approvals from the necessary authorities. The company has also obtained bunkering licenses from Transnet National Ports Authority to conduct bunkering operations in the Ports of Port Elizabeth and Port of Ngqura. Aegean is the first company able to offer fuels outside port limits (OPL) in South Africa and expects to attract passing ships with bunkers at anchorage in South Africa’s Algoa Bay. “The registration of the MT Lefkas and other vessels that will follow is significant for the employment of South African seafarers. Every vessel has extra accommodation that allows for the training and development of cadets. The registration

of the vessel is not only restricted to our bunkering operations only but also introduces many economic benefits for the people of Port Elizabeth such as surveying, offshore services and crew changes (more traffic through the airport), hotel accommodation and light and heavy manufacturing,” said Greek businessman Kosta Argyros. Port of Port Elizabeth Manager, Rajesh Dana added: “The Port of Port Elizabeth is proud and honoured to be the registered home port for the Aegean vessel, MT Lefkas. We congratulate Aegean for the registration of the vessel on the South African flag and look forward to the opportunities that this will present to Nelson Mandela Bay and South Africa."

“This historic event is significant to the Port of Port Elizabeth and South Africa at large as it marks the catalytic growth in the South African Ship Registry and once again highlights Nelson Mandela Bay’s attractiveness as a Maritime City and its potential to exploit the Blue Oceans Economy”. Previously the South African Department of Transport had noted that most shipping lines registered their ships outside the country, with the country relying on about 12 000 foreign vessels to export South African goods to the rest of the Enquiry no: 2 world.

BKCOB goes green

A

fter two years of negotiations, the Border-Kei Chamber of Business (BKCOB) has officially rendered its building as a net zero user of electricity. At the height of load shedding in 2014 / 2015, the BKCOB was challenged by members and business alike, to propose methods and strategies to mitigate losses that arose from the load shedding – without buying generators. This challenge was readily taken up by the Chamber’s Energy Forum, who with a diverse array of knowledge and experience began working on the problem.

The Energy Forum decided that the best way to show businesses how to mitigate against load shedding and reduce energy demand, would be to do this project oneself and lead by example. This lead to a decision to green the Chamber and provide an example for members and businesses alike to do the same. Through business partners and companies, we started by simply assessing our own demand and efficiencies. As such, a thorough energy audit was completed through the grant support programme of the National Business Initiative (NBi) and the consulting firm Carifro. This report indicated that energy demand could be lowered by simply adopting new technology and energy saving devices such as LED lighting, passive motion / occupancy sensors and the inclusion of a grid-tied solar photo voltaic (PV) system to supplement daytime demand.

However this did not solve the actual loss of electricity during load shedding. To overcome this, it was agreed that a backup system would be the best response. Two, six kilowatt uninterrupted power supply (UPS) backup inverters connected to a battery bank, would power all essentials during load shedding. Only air conditioners would be excluded from the backup system due to their high energy demand. Responding to a tender process sent out by the Energy Forum, renewable energy manufacturers and suppliers responded with zeal, wherein almost all materials and products were supplied at cost in exchange for future advertising and marketing that they would receive relating to this project. The Energy Forum has documented the entire process from the auditing, to system design and specification, installation

and operationalisation. This will serve as a blue print for chamber members to access the best quality advice on what works and what doesn’t work, without having to make costly mistakes. The first commercial project is now under discussion and it is hoped that this spurs other companies to take advantage of renewable energy options to reduce overhead costs, save the environment, be carbon conscious and lead the Eastern Cape into a new greener future. And finally, this entire project would not have been possible without the generous trade exchanges and collaboration of Ellies Renewable, First National Battery, Black Lite Solar, Pia Solar and UTI. Gas-to-power on track

T

he Eastern Cape’s plan to host a gasto-power hub is well advanced with Coega IDZ now clearly the province’s preferred location for the development says the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) MEC Sakhumzi Somyo. Somyo made the announcement following the release by the Department of Trade and Industry (thedti) of the country’s eighth industrial policy action plan recently. In the plan, thedti says it intends to use

gas as a pillar of industrialisation, setting the scene for South Africa to become the hub for the regional oil and gas services sector in subSaharan Africa. Somyo says this pronouncement sets the scene for the Eastern Cape to ramp up its plans to become an epicentre for the hub. He refers to the province’s “game-changing” potential shale gas reserves, extensive oil and gas exploration opportunities off its coast, the world-class Nqgura port which could be used to leverage gas imports and exports, and the conversion of the Dedisa Power Plant at Coega. He adds that there is advanced industrial capability in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Coega IDZ; both are also an important offtake market for the gas hub. Furthermore, Coega is home to the Dedisa substation, which is vital

infrastructure for injecting large amounts of power into the grid. Coega, as the preferred site for the gas-topower hub, has led the charge and continues to press ahead with preparations, having undertaken environmental studies for four sites which it has identified for a power plant and land-based liquid natural gas (LNG) terminal, amongst others. It has also completed the preliminary work for a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power project in the IDZ, integrated the LNG receiving infrastructure within the deep-water port of Ngqura. “Our track record speaks for itself. We have invested significant time and effort into making our oil and gas strategy a contender and backing it up with a solid business and technical analysis,” he explains. Although ongoing, another Dedeat study affirms the Eastern Cape’s strategic thrust to harness these strengths and focus on gas-topower, and industrial and commercial offtake. This study already has provided the Department with a deeper understanding of how it can unlock gas to power and industrial and commercial offtake. “Clearly, gas-to-power is a game changer. Its impetus, when it comes to fruition, will be felt across the entire socio-economic spectrum.

Conservative estimates put the number of jobs to be created at 8 400 jobs in the construction phase; another 150 jobs will be created during the operational phase of the gas-to-power plant - a lifespan which is conservatively put at 30 years. More jobs will also result from associated industrialisation and local content supply, as envisaged in IPAP. “Furthermore, the anticipated benefits for industry are sizeable. Not only in securing energy for business operations but also for creating noteworthy business opportunities for global and national players, and of course our local players too”. Somyo welcomes the Department of Energy’s recent pronouncement that it intended to “encourage upstream investment in regional and indigenous sources (through exploration and production)” of the 3,126 MW to be generated from natural gas (including liquefied natural gas or LNG) and another 600MW through gas-fired power generation." "It should be noted that collaboration is paramount to our success in this project." Amongst the important stakeholders include the Department of Energy, National Treasury, Eskom, Central Energy Fund and Transnet. Enquiry no: 4

eading metal roofing manufacturer Safintra continued its 2016 Innovations Roadshows, in Port Elizabeth and East London recently. Following the successful “Sustain-Ability: Be the change” Road shows in 2015, Safintra’s 2016 roadshow offering has already been presented to acclaim to audiences in Polokwane and Mbombela during May. The ‘Innovations’ theme focused on various roll-forming materials, roofing systems and technologies that have dramatically improved the performance of metal roofing and cladding. Maintenance company grows with valuable support T I he South African Maintenance Company (SAMCO), a young and energetic company which provides general maintenance service to the petroleum industry via Pragma South Africa, has grown from only two to a workforce of ten employees servicing three regions across South Africa, including Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape. T has been a challenging first half of the year in business globally and throughout the rest of South Africa. However, I am of the firm conviction that Nelson Mandela Bay still is one of the best cities to invest in, in Africa. The country’s economy has been under severe pressure this year, in dire need of stable political leadership and an action plan to grow jobs in manufacturing in the South African economy. Organised business in the city strongly believes that it is in these difficult economic times that companies in Nelson Mandela Bay need to pull closer together in support of one another, while working harder to create a sustainable environment to do business in. But what is the value proposition of the city? Why has so many international companies chosen Nelson Mandela Bay as an investment destination over the years and why do we keep on attracting the interest of international investors? While recent studies have shown that we do have an alarmingly high unemployment rate in Nelson Mandela Bay and that the ease of doing business in the city should be improved upon by those delivering services to new businesses, we keep on attracting young start-up entrepreneurs like Alan KnottCraig to invest in the city and our people. In fact, he said, “I love PE”. He made this comment at the Nelson Mandela Bay Leadership Summit held in June this year. A part of Knott-Craig’s reasoning of why this city is such a great place to invest in as a business is the eagerness of young people to work for him. Combine this “hungry and helpful” attitude with two harbours, a bustling logistics sector, the flagship industrial development zone and well-developed international automotive and agro-processing sectors, as well as the huge potential of the oceans economy and tourism in our region, and it is hard not to notice Nelson Mandela Bay as a premium investment destination. The shores of Nelson Mandela Bay have been a popular destination for a number of international delegations over the past two years. In 2015 we saw a distinct increase in the international interest and appetite to pursue trade and investment in Nelson Mandela Bay with over 17 trade delegations visiting the city. Although these delegations have led to no concrete investments as yet, they generally tend to take two to three years to gather a deeper understanding of the region before embarking on local investment or leveraging trade opportunities. So I believe this is a positive indicator for good things to come in the future. It is not just individuals who are eager to make this city work, but this wave of proactivity is alive and well in the organised business sector. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber member companies are eager to volunteer in order to make a difference in the city. We have implemented new task team structures this year and the uptake by our members has been extremely positive and encouraging. Our leadership structure is also working hard to collaborate with the various role players in the city, to make Nelson Mandela Bay not only the Friendly City, but indeed an investor-friendly city.

en years ago, Luvuyo Rani (pictured) opened up an Internet café in the dusty townships of Cape Town, today this Queenstown born businessman and founder of SiluloUlutho Technologies employs over 170 people in branches in the Eastern and Western Cape. Rani was a commerce teacher in Cape Town when the Department of Education implemented Outcomes Based Education which saw teachers use computers to assist students. Seeing his colleagues using computers for the first time and struggle with the technology gave him an idea that would years later, put him on the business stage with some of the world’s top entrepreneurs. Initially, he sold computers from the boot of his car with teachers as his primary targets. Gradually, Luvuyo could see a gap within the ICT sector, there was little if any digital knowledge in the townships and that gap gave birth to the concept of SiluloUlutho Technologies. The company started as an Internet café but there was a growing demand for computer training in the community. Luvuyo says that most of the people in townships struggled to get employed because they lacked computer

literacy and the company offered basic computer skills and training for them. To d a y, SiluloUlutho Technologies provides corporate branding solutions for start-up companies and operates 38 IT stores and training centres in townships and rural areas in the Eastern and Western Cape helping to provide job opportunities for unemployed youth. Approximately 50% of Silulo’s students have found stable employment. Silulo has successful partnerships with companies like Tsiba, Careers24 and Telkom in referring job seekers. Luvuyo has won several national and international awards and recently, he was named 2016 World Social Entrepreneur of the year by the Schwab Foundation at the World Economic Forum Africa. The businessman also hopes to impart motivation and wisdom in the Eastern Cape’s up and coming youth as he believes that they are future leaders in respective fields. This is why he and a few SiluloUlutho Technologies committee members are launching the eKomani foundation with the aim of assisting in educating children and youth in the Queenstown Enquiry no: 7 region.

Business purpose is threatened by bureaucracy

ureaucracy can be a hindrance to conducting business in not only South Africa, but globally. While bureaucracy is necessary and will always exist, processes that shackle a project as opposed to serving it should be challenged on an ongoing basis. This is the opinion of CEO of Onpro Consulting, Hein Pretorius (pictured). One of the best ways to manage the impact of existing bureaucracy on projects, intended to increase the competitiveness of a business, is to appoint someone on a project team to deal specifically with bureaucratic issues. This will help the project to deliver better value by not allowing bureaucracy to constrain it. In my opinion, a company’s business purpose, its competitiveness, and its ability to serve its customers efficiently, should take precedence over the bureaucratic elements of the traditional management structure." he says. Some businesses simply follow a process of ticking the boxes when implementing projects;

especially business and operations management software projects. Blindly following such processes and patterns in conducting business can lead to decision paralysis setting in, as many managers have become too used to checking boxes, rather than creative problem-solving. Decision paralysis is especially prevalent when moving from the scenario planning phase to the project implementation phase of a project. We often see a disconnect between what is needed for a business and what is allowed to happen by unyielding, previously set bureaucratic procedures. One example of this is when contracts take up to six months to finalise with top management, but is then expected to be implemented in a matter of days by middle management. This gives rise to issues such as compliance being used as a scape goat by middle

management as reason not to pay for project delivery items agreed to by top management. In those instances the very procedures that were created to protect a business, are becoming the exact things that are placing the business in danger by preventing it becoming or remain competitive at the rate that is demanded by the modern customer. Pretorius ‘ advice is to, during the scenario planning phase, ensure that the business purpose of the project is properly understood by every single project stakeholder, as all project decisions are then guided by the same understanding. The reason an organisation exists is its business purpose. While governance and bureaucracy are very important, it should never adversely affect the business purpose or management accountability, or affect competitiveness. Opportunity keeps blowing in

ohnson Crane Hire is becoming a prominent player in complex lifting projects on wind farms in the country. Recently, the lifting specialist was appointed by Azari Wind (Azari) to provide crane services for the installation of 37 wind generators at Enel Green Power’s 111 MW Gibson Bay Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape, overseen by Nordex Energy South Africa (Nordex). This is one of the latest wind projects to be developed under the South African government’s internationally acclaimed Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme. Under this programme, Johnson Crane Hire has already provided

crane services to install more than 100 wind turbines. However, this does not mean that the company has become complacent at all, with this project providing ample opportunity for the company to hone its skills, according to Johnson Crane Hire’s Brandon Grange. A Liebherr LG 1750 is being used to lift and install the four tower sections (50 to 60 tons each), a nacelle (55 tons), drive train (62.3 tons), hub (35 tons) and three blades (11.2 tons and 57 metres in length each). The crane is fitted with about 245 t of counterweights, and joined by a Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 to help lift the blades. The cranes deployed on this contract - a Liebherr LTM 1160-2 and LTM 1095-5.1 - are also tasked with

he Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has announced a R22 million expansion by agro-processing company Dynamic Commodities in Zone 3 of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). The project brings the total number of investors who have expanded their operations in the Coega IDZ over the past two financial years to four. “These numbers are impressive given the macro-economic challenges facing the domestic and global markets. Investors are confident in the Coega IDZ’s ability to withstand tough times, as such they continue to experience consistent growth yearon- year,” said Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC unit head marketing and communications. One such investor is Dynamic Commodities, which exports most of

its output on an annual basis. The expansion includes a warehouse and refrigerated storage facilities in order to meet the demand. According to Dynamic Commodities general manager of sales and marketing Mark Larter, this investment will allow them to expand their client base and in the process provide more opportunities for the business and the brand. “Currently our clientele base is in Europe, with countries such as Germany, France, Russia, United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden to mention a few” said Larter. The economic spinoffs as a result of the expansion will create over 500 work opportunities, with 300 operational jobs and 200 in during the construction phase. n a recent ceremony at the Doosan factory in Korea, Goscor Lift Truck Company (GLTC) was awarded the global Doosan Forklift Dealer of the Year 2015. While GLTC has won several awards for their performance over the years from Doosan, this is the first time they have won the global Dealer of the Year Award. Daryl Shafto, GLTC MD, says that he is delighted at having won this award. “2015 was a very special year for us and especially in the internal combustion (IC) market where we exceeded our targets both from a financial and a unit sales perspective and increased our forklift market share by 4% in South Africa. Introducing new RMG

onecranes recently introduced a new Rail Mounted Gantry crane (RMG) to the world, namely the Boxporter. This new crane offers the clearest view in intermodal container handling with its “smarter cabin”, which gives the operator superb visibility and comfort. It also gives the operator an extended view to truck and train loading and unloading and container stacking thanks to video and control information displayed on the cabin monitor. pecialist crane and components manufacturer Demag was part of the team that completed a US$750 000 cement manufacturing project at Lafarge-Holcim Zimbabwe. It supplied its state-of-theart 8 ton electric overhead travel crane, 200m of crane rails with Gantrex pads, and new down shop power supply leads, via its regional distributor O. Conolly. Infrastructure development in Zimbabwe is still constrained due to institutional and regulatory inadequacies. However opportunities still exist for new modernised infrastructure, which requires strong local partnerships for the benefits to be realised. Over the past five years there has been a significant increase in multi-national companies looking to engage with the Zimbabwe market. The project began in 2014, however the installation of the crane was delayed to March 2016. “The customer required a dependable and efficient overhead crane for the loading of clinker – a grey nodular material made by heating ground limestone and clay into the hoppers. The clinker is used for manufacturing cement, and loading is a crucial part of the process, so reliability was vital.” Says O. Conolly director Ian Conolly

Lafarge-Holcim Zimbabwe’s clinker plant is one of the major cement companies in the country, and manufactures and markets cement, aggregates and special products. According to Conolly, many of the mines and manufacturing businesses in Zimbabwe make use of antiquated cranes, which are often poorly maintained. “Newer cranes are lighter, faster and easier to maintain, and the cost of keeping old cranes operating is prohibitive,” he continues. The team had to endure some tough challenges. Conolly elaborates: “We had to design a crane suitable for the harsh and dusty operating environment, with limited mobile crane capacity. It was also a challenge installing the crane in a dusty clinker factory without affecting the customer’s production schedule.

To withstand the harsh operating environment, Demag also designed and supplied a robust grab bucket with the crane.” The ten-man installation team is proficient in working in harsh conditions and therefore performed well. “In order to navigate through the challenges, the site team needed to be flexible and maintain good communication with the onsite engineers. We were able to install the crane without any shut down needed or taking away from operation times. What’s more, we ensured that the crane was installed within the given time frame,” he adds. Owing to the quality of the Demag design, manufacturing and components, and local support offered by O. Conolly, the project has been hailed as a success. “We succeeded in designing and installing some tough components and some innovative add-ons to minimise wear, and have proven that we can handle any environment and have very reliable units. Without proper lubrication, wire rope and chain corrodes, wears and ages quickly, and has to be replaced well before its normal life expectancy. Filter Focus Chief Operating Officer Craig FitzGerald comments: “A common error in industry is to use a thick coating lubricant. This will reduce life expectancy of a wire rope considerably due to corrosion resulting in moisture being trapped on the inside. The outer lubricant coating attracts dirt from the surrounding environment which, in turn, becomes a grinding paste when passing over sheaves and rolling onto the drum.” The answer is to use a light fluid lubricant with a strong anti-wear additive pack, capable of penetrating the rope and lubricating each individual strand while dispelling moisture. A penetrating lubricant will allow the inner strands to flex and slide against each other without loss of metallic area or breakage caused by strain. Tank blanketing is an important and effective way to prevent fires in flammable liquid storage tanks by controlling the formation of explosive vapours or air mixtures. Blanketing minimises evaporation of the stored product, in so doing, reducing emission levels and product loss. It also protects the tank’s contents from external contamination. A blanketing valve regulates the pressure of the inert gas layer on top of the stored liquid in a tank. The valve senses the pressure of the tank blanket and opens to allow in more inert gas when the pressure drops below the set pressure. In response to the pressure then building back up to the set pressure, the valve closes and stops the flow. The Protectoseal Series 10 Tank Blanketing Valve comprises two separate valves working

in tandem. “The pilot valve is controlled by the sensed tank pressure, and, in turn, controls the opening and closing of the main valve, which provides flow into the tank from the inert gas supply,” explains Laetitia Botha, Energas Technologies Product Engineer . “The main components of the pilot valve are a pressure sending chamber and a poppet, which can move up and down. The main valve, on the other hand, has a piston which can move to control flow into the tank,” she adds. When the flow of gas into the tank increases the tank pressure above the set pressure, the sense diaphragm is pushed up, allowing both the stop and the poppet to rise (made possible by the spring force under the poppet) until the poppet reseals. Once this has happened, the dome pressure is then allowed to build back up to the inlet pressure, pushing the piston closed once

more, which ultimately shuts off flow to the tank. The valve is specifically designed for tank blanketing and its pilot-operated design offers a very tight operating band. It boasts the most compact design and fewest external connections of any other pilot-operated valve on the market. It is also field serviceable. “The valve is available in a range of materials,” says Botha, adding, “The metal parts are available in 316 stainless steel and the seals and gaskets are available in Buna-N, Neo prene, Viton, EPDM, Chemraz or Kalrez. The inlet and outlet connections of the Protectoseal Series 10 are available in many threaded (FNPT, DN PN16, DN PN10), and flanged (ANSI, DN, FF, RF) combinations. The Series 10 conforms to the latest European ATEX Directive. Launch of African Marine Waste Network

T

he Sustainable Seas Trust (SST), Plastics SA and other partners recently launched the African Marine Waste Network (AMWN) in Port Elizabeth. The two day event highlighted the scourge of marine debris and waste, and looked at ways in which to combat this plight. It allowed for national and international experts to participate in a planning workshop, the celebration of the official launch, public lectures and the first meeting of the Network’s Advisory Panel. The purpose of this initiative was to look at ways in which organisa-

tions and individuals can work together at creating healthier and cleaner oceans for future generations. The primary role of this Network was to bring people from around the African continent together to define, develop and implement a waste strategy. The Network aims to solve problems locally, but will also serve to help other countries strive towards waste free oceans. In working together, this strategy will encourage the people of Africa to reduce their negative footprint and

promote their positive handprints in their own environment. This waste

strategy will be the first ripple effect of what is intended to become a wave of change in Africa. The keynote speaker at the launch was Kristian Teleki, currently the Senior Marine Advisor to the Prince of Wales International Sustainability Unit and the Director of Engagement for the Global Ocean Commission. His talk focused on how valuable plastic is to our society and economies, but he also discussed the massive impact that plastic has

on our environment. He highlighted the ways in which we can co-exist with plastic, until other alternatives are found. The Network and its strategy will incorporate 38 coastal and island states of Africa, which made the facilitation of this project in South Africa, a huge coup. The problem is so great that no single organization, town or country can meet the challenges alone. There must be a crossborder approach with all affected countries working together to solve the problem.

auteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, recently announced that the Gauteng Department of Education would invest R80 million in the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation, which will focus on subjects such as engineering, maths, science, information and communications technology (ICT), commerce and entrepreneurship. “Science surrounds us every day. It is important to us. Science technology creates many things we might be hard-pressed to live without. Every day we enjoy the many benefits of scientific discovery, technology and commerce. Science makes life easier for all of us,” said Lesufi. In support of the new industry, REDISA partnered with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in 2013 to establish an environmental rating centre. During the five-year partnership, REDISA will provide the university with funding of R97 million for research and

development (R&D). The core focus of the centre is to assess the environmental rating of tyres from production through to end-of-life, as well as conducting research on how to beneficiate materials from waste tyres. Through the partnership, 19 young people have been given the opportunity to study further in the field of engineering at NMMU. Siyamtanda Masele from Zwide township in Port Elizabeth is one of these students. She is completing an MTech in Chemistry, focusing on the potential use of waste rubber in processing recycled plastics. "I have always been passionate about science and technology which is why I majored in Analytical Chemistry in my undergraduate studies. Hopefully I can apply my new skills to improving the way waste tyres are used,” said Masele. Investing in R&D is key to building knowledge and expertise for the country. ccording to SG Plastic Construction, the art of plastic welding lies in the selection of the correct weld types for the joining of materials. Plastic Welding is divided into different types:• Butt welding – the face (edge) of the material is heated at a prescribed temperature for a prescribed period under a prescribed pressure. The faces are then fused under pressure and allowed to cool. This forms the strongest joint i.e. 90% as strong as the material. This type weld is used extensively in the joining of pipes and the manufacture of cylinders / tanks from sheeting. Used for Polypropylene, PVDF, HDPE. • Extrusion welding – this type of weld is used in the manufacture of larger item such as tanks. It is the second strongest weld 80 % as strong as the materials. The welding machine is fed with a continuous Ø 3 mm welding rod. The extruder chops and melts the rod and extrudes a weld of up to 25 mm wide. The weld is hot and continues to form a welded bond for up to 20 minutes. This deep penetration allows for a strong bond between materials. Used for Polypropylene, uPVC, PVDF, HDPE. • Socket fusion welding – This weld is similar to butt welding and is used in the installation of small bore piping applications. Injection moulded fittings and piping are joined by heating up the inner surface of the

Care must be taken not to under or overheat the material and to insert the pipe to the correct depth. Any deviation from correct procedures may result in leaks, compromised weld strength and the pipe itself may collapse. Used for Polypropylene, PVDF, HDPE. • Electrofusion welding - this type of welding employs the use of couplings with integrated copper wired heating section piping to fitting into both ends of an electro -fusion coupling. The coupling is connected to a transformer which induces an electrical current to the heating section. The heat generated “melts the surfaces together forming a strong weld. Zero waste to landfill for parts distribution centre

G

eneral Motors South Africa’s (GMSA) Parts Distribution Centre (PDC), situated in the Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth, has recently been declared landfill free. The 37 000 square metre world class warehouse is the first of GM’s global facilities to be recognised with this achievement this year and is the company’s 43rd non-manufacturing site to become landfill free. The warehouse accommodates about 144 000 part numbers and dispatches parts and accessories to 113 dealers and 21 parts wholesalers across Southern Africa as well as 34 dealers in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Ncedisa Mzuzu, Environmental Group Manager, Africa, the waste generated at

the PDC mainly consists of paper and plastic packaging, metals, non-toxic fluids, wood and cardboard. By the end of May, the warehouse has managed to recycle 99.42% with just over half sent to an energy recovery facility. “GMSA’s environmental management system is certified to the ISO 14001:2004 standard. The environment is one of the company’s key business imperatives and we have made significant efforts in recent years to mitigate the impact of the business on the environment. The aim is to have all four sites in Port Elizabeth landfill free by 2020,” said Mzuzu. he growing importance of digital communications systems in the vehicle retailing environment in South Africa was once again stressed at a very informative national Sewells NADA Performance road show staged in Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg recently. This was the second time that Sewells, the well known, global consulting and outsourcing company which specialises in the automotive industry, has staged such a road show in SA. It proved very successful with more than 200 dealers being represented at the various sessions. The next Sewells NADA road show will take place in October. Addressing the delegates Warren Olsen, the CEO of the Sewells Group in SubSahara Africa, said that dealers must run their businesses efficiently and be prepared for setbacks and challenges such as happened with the economic meltdown in 2009 and the present threat to the economy posed by the recent Brexit decision in the United Kingdom. “The 2009 crisis resulted in 135 motor retailers in South Africa closing their doors and with an average employment of 35 people each this was a big blow to local employment,” said Olsen. “It is for this reason that those people heading up automotive businesses in South Africa must embrace change and adapt the way they

run their companies to ensure sustainability. The accelerating move to the digital world is one of these changes that must be taken very seriously.” Mike Paxton, of Sewells, who hosted a group of SA dealers at this year’s NADA conference in Las Vegas, gave an excellent overview of the way digital communication methods are being used successfully in the retail automotive business in the United States. He said that strong CRM programmes were a vital link with consumers, but they must be personalised and communication must be meaningful. “Dealer and product information must be available 24/7 and it must be up to date,” advised Paxton. “This means it is essential that home pages are refreshed regularly and given regular overhauls to ensure they work at optimal efficiency." “It is interesting to note that several dealers in the US focus on aspects of their service offering on their home page, instead of the emphasis on new products one generally finds with South African websites. “SMS’s are the most effective way of reaching a consumer as research shows that virtually all SMS’s received are read within three minutes. fter six decades of reliable production, the Federal-Mogul Payen manufacturing plant in Port Elizabeth continues to remain at the forefront of innovation. Federal-Mogul Motorparts, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML), boasts a deep-rooted heritage in South Africa, with a considerable amount of aftermarket and OEM gaskets and heatshields manufactured locally at the Payen plant in Port Elizabeth since 1949. Shorter lead times and flexible solutions

ccording to Ernst Smith, Product Manager at SMC Pneumatics South Africa, the S7 series is an all-purpose valve is available in three sizes, namely the SY3000, SY5000 and SY7000. Thanks to its innovative redesign and smaller size, a reduction of 29% is achieved in installation space offering greater flexibility, increased flow rates and a more economical operation. The two smaller valve sizes or two larger valve sizes can be mixed on one manifold to closely match application requirements. The manifold offers piping options to the top, side or bottom with various port size options, achieving a flow rate of up to 1500 litres per minute via the biggest valve mounted on the manifold. “The valves in the new SY series offers further air savings as a result of driving bigger cylinders with reduced cycle times without the need to use larger, more expensive solenoid valves. These valves are available in either rubber or unique metal seal versions with the metal seal version being particularly suitable for higher operating frequencies and extended lifetime performance; boasting switching cycles of up to 200 million cycles,” Smith explains. The SY series incorporates SMC’s energyefficient V100 pilot valve and a power saving option that reduces power consumption (per valve coil) down to just 0,1 Watt. The option to have a single valve mounted on a base is available for such projects and also offers flow rates exceeding 1500 liters per minute. The connection to this plug-in sub base type valve is via the well-known M12 waterproof connector. The valve can be supplied fitted with a residual pressure release valve that enables manual dumping of residual compressed air in the cylinder. This function ensures safety in the produc-

undale Free Range Dairy continues to forge ahead to cement its place as the Greenest Dairy in the Eastern Cape. As users of up to 300 000 litres of water per day, primarily used to clean the factory and production lines, crates and vehicles, dairies are one of the largest consumers of water. According to CEO Pierre van Rensburg, “South Africa is a water stressed country and the deepening water crisis is becoming as pressing as the supply of electricity, if not more so. Owing to the nature of the business, it is critically important for us to find more efficient ways in which to use this scarce resource for the long term sustainability of operations by investing in treating our water so that it is up to SABS standards of potable water.”

The R 8m investment will allow Sundale to lead the pack in efficiency, further cementing their green status. Showing the importance of sustainability D uring a recent water outage in East London, some businesses and schools shut down and hospitals switched to using their own supplies, with tanker topups. Every city service, institution, business and home throughout East London and surrounds was affected – including Transnet Port Terminals. However, Transnet Port Terminals(TPT) East London experienced minimal disruptions to operations thanks to one of their innovative sustainability measures in place. One of the many investments made by the terminal for sustainability that proved invaluable was a rainwater harvesting system. The system captures rainwater using gutters and down pipes, additional underground piping, and gravity fed 6 x 5,000 litres water tanks that are used to store the water for use in the CPO building.

Each year the CPO Building roof collects around 379 000 litres of water and all this water goes to storm water channels and some as runs-offs resulting in soil erosion and sediment deposition. According to East London’s Terminal Manager, Wandisa Vazi, sustainability is a key performance driver within TPT. “The recent water outage in our city reinforced the need for us to be vigilant about implementing initiatives for water saving and recycling. Our rainwater harvesting initiative demonstrated why this type of approach and vision for sustainability is so important, with the potential impact of this type of crisis to our operations being negated as a result of our fore-planning”, stated Vazi. The 379 000 litres of water that would normally be wasted is captured and used for flushing toilets, toilet basins and kitchen sinks.

With this initiative in place, the CPO Building will cut use of municipal water supply by 70%, thereby also incurring cost savings on East London Terminal’s annual metered water consumption. According to Siya Mhlaluka, General Manager of TPT’s Eastern Cape Port Terminals, South Africa is among the 30 driest nations in the world, currently classified as a ‘water stressed’ country and the country’s demand for water will exceed supply by 2025, if nothing is done to supplement current water resources. “As a responsible business and operator, it is our duty to deliver sustainable development outcomes for the well-being of future generations. Making water easy

T

he majority of municipalities in South Africa are under severe strain to deliver basic services to their communities. This as a result of many factors such as population growth, insufficient capacity, limited budgets, lack of maintenance and, in the case of water and sanitation, severe water scarcity and drought. Emalahleni municipality has a water treatment plant that was severely strained because of demand exceeding treatment capacity. This resulted in a situation where up to 20Ml/day was being wasted due to the excessive frequency of backwashing and rinsing of the filters. Not only was the quality of the water being distributed at risk of contamination by push-through from the overloaded treatment system, but the reduced volumes of water available for distribution resulted in worsening of

the water scarcity situation. Having less to sell to consumers resulted in a reduction of income to the municipal coffers from water sales as well as some very disgruntled residents who simply had no water over long periods. NuWater has intervened with a solution that is not only very efficient, but also affordable and can be rapidly implemented and redeployed when required. The existing water treatment works can be run at design capacity while the NuWater plant delivers the balance of the total volumes required by the municipality, thereby ensuring volumes and quality standards are met. In addition, no capital budget is required. The plant is financed

through operational budgets as the plant generates additional income to the municipality through having more product to sell to consumers. This, in turn, provides the income stream that can be used to pay for the facility. The modular nature allows for flexibility and easy deployment and redeployment as and when required. Sewage treatment plant installed

eolia Water Technologies South Africa (Veolia) completed a civil-based sewage treatment plant (STP) for CLN Nacala Corridor Project, the port and railway link in Mozambique. The STP was a turnkey project consisting of civil, electrical and mechanical installation, designed with trickling filter technology to cater for a maximum of 500 people per day (500 PE). The plant has the capacity to process 100m³ of sewage per day, servicing the port’s administration block. As a turnkey project, civil design and construction formed part of Veolia’s scope of work, in addition to the supply and installation of all mechanical and electrical equipment. Veolia employed trickling filter technology as the most appropriate technology to ensure that the STP discharge water was treated to the client’s specification. “It is the ideal sewage treatment solution for this application,” explains Hirsheda Jeram, Project Manager, Veolia Water Technologies South Africa. “It works well in high temperatures and in remote locations, and is used to treat domestic sewage high in organic matter like BOD, COD and various other pollutants.” The turnkey sewage treatment plant replaces multiple septic tanks previously used by the coal terminal port. She adds that, in addition to high temperature suitability, the benefits of trickling filter technology include lower running and operating costs, and requires reduced energy input. It is simple to use and actual maintenance itself is much lower. “All of these contribute to minimal costs over the plants lifespan,” Jeram

points out, “and additional benefits include easy recovery from power outages, bio digestion at a high rate with nominal resource use, less sludge production and minimal operator intervention.” Veolia’s ability to adapt to cli-

Helping EC building industry members protect their rights T he days of a simple handshake holding the various parties involved in a project nowadays belong to a bygone era. In the building industry, in particular, entering any contract - small or large - without a formal contract is a recipe for disaster, says Uwe Putlitz, CEO of the Joint Building Contracts Committee (JBCC). “A building or construction contract is a binding agreement between the employer for the building project and the building contractor and sub-contractors responsible for carrying out the construction work. JBCC has developed and authored a comprehensive suite of building contracts, meticulously drafted to comply with South African conditions and legislation, and to ensure equitable distribution of contractual risk,” Putlitz explained. JBCC is a non-profit company which represents building owners and developers, professional consultants, and general and specialist contractors who provide input for the com-

pilation of JBCC documents that portray the consensus view of the constituent members. JBCC documents carry Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) approval. JBCC will stage two seminars on the Principal Building Agreement and Nominated/Selected Subcontract agreement in the Eastern Cape later this year. The seminars will be presented from 8am

to 4.30pm on August 17 at the Garden Court in East London, and on August 18 at the Beach Hotel in Port Elizabeth. Delegates attending will earn a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point. The interactive seminars will deal with the various agreements and application of the contracts and supporting forms as a contract administration tool. The target audience includes principal agents, project managers, architects, and quantity surveyors, engineers, building contractors and subcontractors, employers, building owners and developers and procurement officers. J Fully approved for use throughout the European Union, the new road trailer options mean the generators can be easily transported between sites without the need for major adaptations. A new optional skid has been introduced to add extra robustness to the base-frame of the generators. It is specifically designed for applications where the unit will reside on uneven surfaces, or if needs be moved across the ground over short distances. To provide operators with the option of extended run times, CPDG generators can now be equipped with higher capacity fuel tanks. This, coupled with 500 hour service intervals, means CPDG generators are especially suited for applications where a generator is required to reliably run for a high number of hours with reduced attention from the operator. asco’s Webb Industries’ latest Rapid Deployment Solution (RDS) is a progression on its predecessors in that it is a multi-user, as opposed to single-user, mast. “Our new mast has an increased load capacity of 8m² over the top 10m making it possible for multi-customer use,” says Webb engineer Mike Kruger. “Also, while the standard greenfields site takes 21 days or more to complete, this 36m mast can be fully deployed in three days, resulting in a significant price and ‘time to market’ advantage.” He adds that the new solution is a full-site arrangement including the 7.2m X 7.2m base substructure, tower, fencing, universal equipment cabinet, all underground ducting, full-site earthing and an aircraft warning light system. “In essence, all that has to be done is to bring power to the site, draw the cable through the ducting sleeve and the system is ready to go,” Kruger says. “Another cost advantage is that there is no concrete used in the foundation of the structure. The foundation consists of a steel

platform base that is filled with suitable compactable material,” says Kruger. “This material sub-base is 400mm deep leaving 50mm for clients to have a site finish of their choice in various materials like, stone chip, paving, etc.” With respect to the fencing both Clearvue and palisade fencing are available and either can be painted to any colour although the standard is hot-dip galvanised. The main advantages of Webb’s RDS are that they helps overcome site acquisition constraints and save on rigging costs due to the short time spent on site; they are easy and fast to erect and do not need expensive cranes; they are suitable for both urban and rural sites and sites with difficult access and in remote location. New technology for turbo parallel-shaft gears

V

oith unveiled the new BHS AeroMaXX technology for turbo parallel-shaft gear units at Power-Gen Europe 2016 recently. The inner housing and optimised sleeve bearings reduce power loss and oil consumption by 30% or more. The solution has a passivemechanical character and does not require any additional accessories. Operators profit from identical design standards, unchanged overall operating behaviour and maximum reliability. Voith emphasises this with a 36-month warranty period – in both new systems and retrofits. The technology is manufacturer-independent and available immediately. Due to the high pitch line velocities of up to 200 m/s, oil swirling and oil squeezing in the gear mesh account for a substantial part of the power loss of highspeed turbo gear units. The BHS AeroMaXX technology reduces these losses by separating lubrication and cooling. An inner housing in the direct vicinity of the gear set absorbs

heat and dissipates it into the bottom area on the external surface on the inner housing via cooling oil. This means that a substantially smaller volume of oil is required for the actual lubrication of the teeth contact surfaces, while the swirling oil/air mixture itself is minimised. In addition to the inner housing, the technology also includes new BHS EcoMax sleeve bearings on the pinion shaft. These hydrodynamic bearings are optimised specifically for the application, and guarantee high energy efficiency along with significant oil savings. By combining the inner housing and the specificallydesigned bearings, BHS AeroMaXX increases the gear unit efficiency by up to 0.5%. At the same time, oil consumption is reduced by at least 30%. Zero excuse for industry electrical incidents

he number of incidents causing injury or death in the electrical industry is totally unacceptable and can be avoided. There are no justifiable reasons that any safety related electrical incident should ever occur. This is the adamant view of Sikhumbuzo Ngwenya (pictured), High Voltage Divisional Manager, Surgetek. A registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Ngwenya’s significant industry experience as a network security planning engineer focusing on power line outage studies, fault levels, contingency plans, emergency preparedness plans, essential loads, management and execution of manual and automatic load shedding at utilities electricity provider, Eskom, has contributed to his expertise in this field. Ngwenya has identified three definitive causes that increase risk and contribute to unnecessary electrical injury or death. He cites these as inadequate train-

Compact splicing connectors

A simple solution to a multi-billion rand crisis

able theft is fast becoming a national crisis in South Africa. Estimates put the loss between R5 and R7-billion a year, with serious implications for the country’s economy, reliability of electricity supply and security. Cable thefts can cause power outages that could last for days, with copper cable thefts constituting more than 90% of all these thefts. The cost of replacing the metal has a significant disruptive effect on industry and contributes to increased tariffs and prices for ordinary South Africans. Furthermore, the replacement of stolen cables has to take preference over essential maintenance. Banding & ID Solutions Africa sales representative Matthew Campbell explains that the security of any traditional cable installation can be

increased by applying an Ultra-Lokclamp as frequently as every 150mm of cable. “The cost of replacing the stolen cables and resultant downtime are both high, as cable theft affects production and costs. he manufacture of tugboats by ship builder SA Shipyards, for end user Transnet, provided Instrotech – instrumentation and process control company - an opportunity to develop a technical solution for diesel tank monitoring. Instrotech’s specific involvement was the monitoring of volume, in litres, of diesel in the port and starboard tanks of the tugboats. Instrotech specified locally manufactured products, as well as high-quality Swiss instrumentation by Keller.

little more than a year after connecting to the national energy grid, one of South Africa’s first major wind farms has announced that it is injecting more than R800-million into community economic development projects over the course of its 20-year lifespan. Kouga Wind Farm, which was one of the successful bidders in the first round of the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), connected to the national electricity grid in March last year. The R2-billion development – consisting of 32 turbines each generating up to 2.5 megawatts – produces enough power to supply electricity to approximately 50 000 average South African households annually, mitigating over 270 000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Chief executive Lukhanyo Ndube addressed 150 high school pupils on site recently as part of the Department of Energy Learners’ Focus Week programme and later launched the R2.2million programme to rebuild a crèche which was razed in a fire 2013 in the nearby Kwanomzamo community. “A key focus for Kouga Wind Farm

is uplifting the communities in which the wind farm is involved,” said Ndube. “Over the course of its 20-year lifespan, Kouga Wind Farm will inject approximately R140-million in socioeconomic development spending and a further R660-million in enterprise development spending on the communities within a 50km radius of the project.” To date the wind farm has spent R5.5-million on health, childcare, food security, education, sport, transport and infrastructure development in the neighbouring communities. The wind farm also provided Sandwater Primary School in Umzamowethu with a solar-powered computer lab and assisted the Jeffreys Bay Healthy Mom & Baby Clinic with vital equipment and supplies.

Currently, 39 community members are undergoing training under the wind farm’s Driver’s Licence Programme, with three bird and bat monitors involved at Kouga Wind Farm having recently been awarded their driver’s licences. Addressing the maths and science pupils, Ndube encouraged entrepreneurship. “The South African renewable energy sector needs more local expertise – especially if the sector is to attain government’s target of supplying 42% of the country’s energy needs,” he said. “The renewable energy sector also needs entrepreneurs in order to improve technology and innovation in the industry.” Enquiry no: 67

n an extension of its proactive risk management initiatives in municipalities across the country, Santam, South Africa’s largest short-term insurer, handed over much needed firefighting equipment to the value of R220 000 to the Makana local municipality fire department in Grahamstown. The equipment included skid units,

fire branches, spades, hammers, protective clothing for fire-fighters, torches, spotlights and foam cans. The handover was preceded by a successful stakeholder event in partnership with the Sarah Baartman District municipality and the Makana local municipality to share details of Santam’s holistic risk-management

partnerships. Temba Mvusi, Executive Head: Market Development at Santam, says the engagement created the platform to discuss the impact of these risk management initiatives in the communities where the partnerships have been established. “Through this partnership we drive risk mitigation and risk reduction interventions and initiatives with 10 district municipalities which comprise 54 local municipalities in South Africa.” According to Mvusi municipalities bear the responsibility of managing the ramifications of a disaster when it strikes. “Their ability to not only respond but more importantly, to mitigate the risks is required. One of the most recent recipients of a wheelchair “purchased”with breadtags, was Xoliswa Yabo, a young woman from the Daliwe Township in the Eastern Cape who was born with a speech impediment and without the use of her legs. Cathcart High School heard about her plight and decided to collect breadtags in order to buy a brand new wheelchair for Xoliswa. “Cathcart High is a shining example of how a community can work together to change somebody’s life. The school managed to collect an

impressive 271kg of breadtags which was sent to a recycling plant in Cape Town. This was massive effort considering that that 271kg of breadtags translates to a staggering 826 550 000 tags/loaves of bread,” Spangenberg Enquiry no: 69 said.
