PAST PRESIDENT OUTGOING MESSAGE

It has been a wonderful experience being the three-term (6 years!) President of the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce. I have made some great friends through this chapter and have met many fine people. The chamber has help build my character in many ways. Standing in front of people to speak can be intimidating in the beginning. However, once you get out of your comfort zone, you start to grow! I know that the chamber is in fine hands, because of the dedicated group that remains. Thank you all for this great opportunity and for believing in me. Sincerely, Nestor L. Arce

MESSAGE FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT

It is an honor and my pleasure to be your president in our 100th Year of the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce. Our rich history and tradition these past 100 years would not have been possible without the wisdom and dedication of the many people who have volunteered and served in our chamber. From its humble beginnings in 1898, The Bloomfield Board of Trade gave the local business community a unified voice to bring success and prosperity to local business owners, in order to enrich the community and improve the quality of life for all its residents. Our mission to work together by nurturing and enhancing the growth and prosperity of our businesses continues today. Our founders created a community organization that is still thriving 100 years later. The chamber brings us together by advocating on behalf of all of us. It is on behalf of all the chamber members and Board of Directors that I ask you to join me in celebrating our 100th Anniversary to continue to enhance and grow our business community for the next 100 years! Sincerely, Josephine O’Brien

Our Honorees Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D. President, CEO, Clara Maass Medical Center "The Excellence Award" Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D. is a compassionate leader, dynamic healthcare administrator and a brilliant businesswoman. She proudly leads Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, which has 2,300 Employees, 700 Physicians, more than 200 Volunteers and revenue exceeding $271 million in 2016. Dr. Clyne led the first major campus expansion project at Clara Maass in more than a decade. Renovations for the $23 million project include: construction of a four-story, 87,000-square-foot building featuring a state-of-the-art, private 32bed Intensive Care Unit, two levels of Medical Office space, Patient Registration, Retail Pharmacy, a new Main Entrance, Lobby, and a fifth-level addition to the parking garage. Future expansion projects will commence on campus later this year including Emergency Department Pediatric and Adult Observation Units and four new Operating Room suites. A Grand Opening Celebration will be next week at Clara Maass on Monday, March 27, 2017. Clara Maass garnered many prestigious awards. In 2015, for the eighth consecutive time, CMMC received an "A" Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group. In 2015 and 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) updated the Nursing Home Compare Five-Star Ratings. The Transitional Care Unit at CMMC earned an overall Five-Star Rating this year and each year since it was established in 2009. Clara Maass received certification from The Joint Commission for: Advance Palliative Care, Acute Coronary Syndrome, Congestive Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, and Cardiac Rehabilitation. In January 2017, during the NJ Hospital Association’s 98th Annual Meeting, the Clara Maass Community Health Department received the Health Research and Educational Trust Award for the Wellness Assessment Van for Elders (WAVE)

program and the Clara Cares program for senior citizens. In 2016, success with the WAVE Program resulted in a PeRCy Award from the Healthcare Planning Society of NJ for the category Best Use of Hospital Promotional Products. Under Dr. Clyne’s leadership, CMMC has been nationally recognized with numerous Quality Awards, including 2015 Outstanding Patient Experience Award, 2014 Maternity Care Excellence Award, 2014 Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award, Coronary Intervention Excellence and General Surgery Excellence Awards, and five consecutive Patient Safety Excellence Awards from HealthGrades, which placed CMMC in the top 10 percent of Medical Centers that were recognized nationwide for patient safety. Additionally, U.S. News & World Report ranked CMMC among the 50 Best Regional Hospitals in the New York Metropolitan Area consecutively for three years and recognized CMMC for high performance in the areas of Diabetes, Nephrology, Neurology and Orthopedics. Clara Maass was ranked the second highest in the state for hospital safety by Consumer Reports and top in the state for the treatment of Congestive Heart Failure and Heart Attacks by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services. Prior to becoming the President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass in 2010, Dr. Clyne was the Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services at the Medical Center. She held Director-level positions at The General Hospital Center at Passaic, The Hospital Center at Orange and held various Nursing Administrative positions at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Dr. Clyne was named to the Becker’s Hospital Review list of 130 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know in 2016. In August 2016, Dr. Clyne’s success was highlighted in a Becker’s Hospital Review article titled, “33 nurses who transitioned to hospital CEOs.” The Nutley Irish American Association named Dr. Clyne Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2016. Last year, Dr. Clyne was named to the Best 50 Women in Business list by NJBIZ. Her list of accolades includes a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Seton Hall University College of Nursing and Alumni Relations that was presented during the 2016 Margaret C. Haley Awards. Dr. Clyne is proud to be the first person to earn her Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in Nursing at Seton Hall University, where she also serves as an Adjunct Professor. She is a prolific scholar, author, and researcher.

Michael L. Sceurman Director, Bloomfield Parks and Recreation "Recognition and Community Service Award" Michael Sceurman is a lifelong resident of Bloomfield and has worked for the Bloomfield Recreation Department since the age of 13 years old when he was hired as a summer camp counselor. Throughout his time in high school and college, Mike continued his part time work by working at summer camps and clinics, organizing sports clinics, leagues and coaching several basketball teams. After graduating Montclair State University with a BA in Business Management, he landed a full time job as a Recreation Supervisor in 2002. During the next 15 years, Mike has been involved in every aspect of recreation in the Township of Bloomfield from organizing seasonal programs, running youth and adult leagues, to town wide events like the Independence Day Celebration and overseeing capital improvements in the municipal park system. In 2011, Mike was promoted to Director of Parks & Recreation and has never been happier. He calls it his “dream job” and hopes to continue to bring new and exciting programs and initiatives to the town he calls home. While work consumes a lot of Mike’s free time he has still managed to remain active in many groups, committees and organizations around town. Now that his two children are school aged, he hopes to become more involved with their sports and extracurricular activities with his wife. When asked why he is involved in so many things in town he replied, “My parents always led by example. For as long as I can remember, both of my parents volunteered their time in our community. For me it’s a way of paying it forward for the next generation of residents.”

Jill Simmons President, The Women's Club of Glen Ridge "Community Service Award" The Women’s Club of Glen Ridge has played an integral role in the community for over 100 years. The club was founded in 1905 as “an organized center for thought and action for the women of the community in which ideals of education, culture, and civic and social service may be encouraged and developed.” Kicking off its 112th year this January, our club has been successfully fulfilling its mission since its inception and remains a vibrant and vital organization today. Charity fundraising and community service are cornerstones of the Women’s Club. We organize several major, annual fundraisers including the spring Favorite Doll Tea and the popular House Tour in May. Funds from these and other events support the charitable gifts the Club passes on to local organizations. The Women’s Club has been closely associated with almost every aspect of life in the borough and we pride ourselves on responding to the needs of the community at-large: as an official polling place, blood drive location, and host of myriad co-sponsored activities with the public schools and other community organizations. Community Service projects over the years have been both large and small in scope, but there is hardly a local charity or town organization that has not benefited from the Club’s generosity. The Women’s Club, along with its own junior group, the Girl’s Club, raises an annual sum of approximately $20,000.

Below is a sample of the many organizations that we support: High School Scholarships • Susan G Komen, North Jersey Community Gardens • The Connie Dwyer Breast Center at St. Michael's The Human Needs Food Pantry • Toni’s Kitchen Glen Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Squad • Gas Lamp Players Sponsorship of the Glen Ridge Eco Fair • Community Food Bank of New Jersey Wynona’s House • Glen Ridge Local Assistance Advisory Committee As we go forth in our mission, the Women's Club of Glen Ridge continues to grow and evolve as a club for and about women. We are grateful to the women who have helped knit together our long history and hopeful about the contributions of those who follow us in the years ahead. At this time, we would like to take the opportunity to thank the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce for this very special recognition and honor. We deeply appreciate the spotlight you have placed on our good works in the community, as that light will serve to energize and inspire us all the more. Thank you! Yours in Service, Jill Simmons, President
