ocial events and celebrations, such as weddings, are finally on their way back, and teeth whitening is a popular post-lockdown treatment being sought after right now. And sparkling smiles are one of Cyncoed Dental & Skin Clinic’s mainstays. The General Dental Council in the UK has deemed that tooth whitening is the “practice of dentistry” and therefore it should only be carried out by appropriately trained and registered dental professionals – anything else is illegal. So tip number one from us is, when it comes to whitening your teeth, always start with a consultation with your dentist! Do over-the-counter whitening toothpastes actually work? A lot of the supposed whitening toothpastes, such as activated charcoal etc, have very abrasive substances added to them which may remove some surface stains but can actually abrade the enamel surface over the long term, which in turn can end up yellowing the teeth as, once enamel is worn away, the layer underneath, which is called dentine, becomes exposed, and dentine is darker and yellower in colour than the outer enamel. appropriate trays and whitening gel oversees the process. These can be very effective and convenient if used properly. The most important factor for take-home treatment is the fit and quality of the custom-made whitening trays you are provided with by your dentist. We have tried and tested many and only use two laboratories in the UK for our patients’ bespoke trays and always fit the trays and check them ourselves. So tip number two from us is to ensure your dentist checks that your whitening trays are excellent quality and fitting. Is teeth whitening safe? Our whitening systems comply to EU regulations and the peroxide concentrations we provide are very safe. Tip number 3 is ensure you are using regulated whitening products provided by a dental professional. ■
