o one gets married thinking that one day it could end in divorce. The simple fact is that some marriages do end in divorce, about half in fact. When emotions run high it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important and let an already difficult situation spiral out of control. The first rule is not to let blame drive the process. Divorce is the process of legally ending your marriage, it’s not an exercise in demonstrating fault or apportioning blame. You will have to deal with your partner during the process and alienating them at the beginning by being unnecessarily aggressive will make matters more difficult in the future. Remember, you may still have to talk about the arrangements for the children or your finances.

Emotional support from friends and family is good, but do also get proper legal advice from a family law solicitor. Don’t rely on website forums or people who have been through similar situations for advice. Like your marriage, your separation is unique so make sure you understand the options that are available to you. Don’t lose sight of what is and is not important. If you have children, then remember that they will be going through a big change. If you can, agree the times that you will each see the children. Regularity and routine is key for everyone, especially the children. Remember, although you may no longer be a husband or wife, to the kids you’re still Mum or Dad. The end of a relationship isn’t easy, but with the right support and advice it is survivable. n
