HAMONT-ACHEL Ontdek onze cultuur

Duik in het verleden en wandel eens langs de reconstructie van ‘Den droad’ bij Hamont-Achel. Deze zogenaamde Dodendraad was een 332 kilometer lange draadversperring die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd aangelegd door de Duitsers, langs de grens tussen België en Nederland. 2000 volt elektriciteit op de draden moest ervoor zorgen dat niemand uit het bezette België het in zijn hoofd haalde om te vluchten naar het vrije Nederland. Bij de reconstructie staan infoborden over deze bijzondere geschiedenis in het grensgebied. Twee wandelroutes lopen erlangs.

Dive into the past and hike along the reconstruction of ‘Den droad’ (the wire) near Hamont-Achel. This so-called Death Wire was a

332 kilometre long wire fence constructed by the Germans during the First World War, spanning the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. The 2000 volts of electricity on the wires made sure no one from occupied Belgium would be mad enough to even consider fleeing to unoccupied Netherlands. The reconstruction includes boards with information about this special period of border area history and two hiking trails run past it.

Echte liefhebbers van groen mogen de heemtuin van Valkenswaard beslist niet missen! De tuin is dagelijks gratis toegankelijk en ligt achter Natuureducatiecentrum D’n Nieuwe Hof. De wilde planten die je hier kunt zien, zijn gegroepeerd naar plantenfamilie. Op bordjes zie je om welke soort het gaat. Je kunt hier ook ontdekken hoe je je eigen tuin aantrekkelijker maakt voor vogels en insecten. Een leuk souvenir! En wil je écht even in contact komen met de natuur, loop dan het blotevoetenpad…

For true lovers of greenery the heemtuin (wildlife garden) of Valkenswaard is not to be missed! The garden is open for visitors every day free of charge, and is located behind nature education centre D’n Nieuwe Hof. The wild plants that grow here are grouped by plant family. Signs indicate the species concerned. The garden is also a great place to discover how you can make your own garden more attractive to birds and insects. A nice souvenir! And if you really wish to reconnect with nature, walk the barefoot path...
