was a graduate of Valdosta High School (1960) and Valdosta State University (1964). He taught science at Brooks and Lowndes County High Schools before joining the Weyerhaeuser Company. Mr. Cothron ran facets of industrial operations in Adel, Georgia, and Doswell, before assuming regional positions as an industrial sales engineer focused on product development, customer service and resolution of technical issues. He worked with Weyerhaeuser and Sierra Pine customers in the furniture belt of Virginia and North Carolina, as well as throughout the Eastern United States, Caribbean and Europe. After retirement, he managed his longleaf timber and straw operations. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Julia Harrell Cothron of Mechanicsville; a sister, Vivien Bly of Interlachen, Florida; a brother, Thomas Grady Cothron Jr. of Valdosta, Georgia; five nieces and nephews and four great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Cothron’s wife, Julia, is the daughter of the late Emmye Ramsey Harrell and Cuy Harrell Jr. of Whigham, Georgia. Sisters include Emily H. Maxwell of Whigham and Jacqueline H. Crew of Thomasville; a brother, Cuy Harrell III of Whigham; five nieces and nephews, and a great-niece. A memorial service was held September 24, 2016, with burial at the Redland Baptist Church. DOROTHY ECKLES Dorothy Franklin “Dot” 86 Eckles, of Reedville, died on October 8, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 58 years, Russell H. Eckles. She is survived by her four children, Dee ECKLES Majette (Shawn), David Eckles (Jennifer), Beth Duncan (Craig) and Mike Eckles (Brenda); and five grandchildren, Libby Majette, Sarah Majette Donahoe (Matt), Michelle Eckles, Erin Majette and Steven Eckles; and other nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, at Fairfields Baptist Church, 15213 Northumberland Hwy, Burgess, Va. PETER EDWARDS Peter R “Pete” Edwards Jr.. 71, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away Monday, October 3, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Edwards; two step-daughters, Christy Barbee (Eric) and Rebecca

Walker; six grandchildren, Austin, Evan, Zachary, Peyton, Tyler, and Isabella;

as well as two sisters Geraldine McCarthy (Jerry) and Fay Cooke. Pete also leaves behind loving nieces and nephews, Cathy McCarthy-Myers (Parker and their children, Maive and Gavin), Kelly Stuart (Steve and their daughter Zoe), Jeff Cooke (Alayna and their son, Tanner), and LouAnn Cooke-Rees (Troy); brother-in-law, Robert E. Satterwhite; and sister-in-law, Mary S. Witt (John). Pete was a Vietnam Army veteran and retired after 27 years from the City of Richmond Police Department, having served as a city patrolman, K-9 master instructor, and retired while serving in the Mounted Squad. The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12 pm Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., with services beginning at Noon.
