nephews. Judy retired from Lucent Technologies and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling with her family, particularly to Wildwood, New Jersey, the Outer Banks and Myrtle Beach and swimming in her pool. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home at 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Interment followed at Woodland Cemetery in Ashland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060.

ERNEST STANLEY Ernest Carter Stanley, 94, claimed the promise of the resurrection on Monday, August 1, 2016, while surrounded by his family. Ernest answered his country’s “call” and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1946. He was a member of the Enon United STANLEY

Methodist Church for almost 70 years. Ernest was preceded in death by his five brothers; two sisters; son, Bruce Carter Stanley; and great-grandchildren, Colton and Caroline Wood. He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Gladys; his daughters, Marilyn Gooch and her husband, Ronnie, and Phyllis Morris and her husband, Pete; daughter-in-law, Debbie Stanley. Ernest was a faithful man who loved his family and served his neighbors as family. He loved dearly his grandchildren and great-

grandchildren, Angie and Tommy Atkinson, Tommy Jr. and Taylor, Rondal and Hollie Gooch, Jason Stanley and Megan Saucier, Jayne Carter, Cameron and Suzanne Wood, Carter, Michael and Faith Stanley, Jennifer and Jeremy Carignan, Brooklyn and Joseph; Laurie and Michael Latham, Tyler and Ashley and Daniel Stanley and his girlfriend, Kate. He also is survived by a brother, James Stanley and his wife, Mary Edna, of Norfolk; and a sister, Jeannette McCoy and her husband, Chuck, of Richmond. A service of death and resurrection was held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016, at the Enon United Methodist Church at 6156 Studley Road in Mechanicsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to Enon UMC, P.O. Box 68, Studley, VA 23162. The Woody Funeral Home-Atlee Chapel at 9271 Shady Grove Road in Mechanicsville was in charge of arrangements.

SARAH STEIN Sarah Shannon Stein, 50, of Mechanicsville, died on July 29, 2016, after a brief battle with colon cancer. True to her tenacious approach to life, Sarah gave her heart to each person and all social justice issues that she encountered. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerard and Eunice; motherin-law, STEIN Annie Striblins; and nephew, John. Sarah is survived by her loving husband, Wannie (Ike) Cook; siblings, Marie, Gerard (Patricia), Timothy (Jenny), Anne (Mark) and James (Kim); and cousin, Elizabeth

Green; numerous nieces and nephews; and treasured family friend, Annie Robinson. Sarah was a proud graduate of Our Lady of the Elms High School and the University of Akron. As a social worker, she advocated tirelessly for her patients and their families. A celebration of Sarah’s life will be held August 27, 2016, in Akron, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Association, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855.

JOHN SUBLETT John William Sublett, 90, of Mechanicsville, died July 29, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Nelda Billingsley Sublett; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Sublett Lizzi and James Nicholas Lizzi of Woodbridge; a son, John William (Bill) Sublett Jr. of Fredericksburg; a granddaughter, Alison Renee Lizzi of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; two nieces, Martha Davidson Riggs (Jim) and Lisa Davidson Beihn (Robert); and one great-nephew, Jay Riggs. He was born in Huntsville, Alabama, and was a veteran of World War II. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and he received a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Richmond. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi. He was a chemical engineer retired from E.I. DuPont and was a member SUBLETT of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He was a member of the Bon Air United Methodist Church. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2016, see OBITUARIES, pg. 34
