Franklin Edward George Jr., his sons, Noah Christopher and Caleb Foster. He is also survived by his sister, Betty George Hogan and husband, Jerry; brother, Robert Warren George and wife, Carol; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth George and Linda George; as well as many nieces, nephews and loving friends. Franklin was a graduate of John Marshall High School, served in the Army, retired from The Washington Post, and was a faithful member of Ginter Park Baptist Church. The family received friends on Sept. 17 at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, where funeral services were held on Sept. 18 with interment that followed at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

GINTOUT, Jane White, 57, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully at home with her family and friends surrounding her on September 19, 2013 after a long, courageous battle with leukemia. Born in Jonesville, Va. on August 3, 1956, she is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 35 years, Tony; and her only child, Sarah. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Hazelwood of Pawleys Island, S.C.; her brother, Kenny White (Shirley) of Quinton, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. C. and Clara White; brother, Bill; and brother-inlaw, Wayne. Throughout her life, she cared for many people during her nursing career. Jane was an avid supporter of feline rescue. She loved to travel, quilt and be with her family. Jane was so proud of her garden, wildflowers, prizewinning tomatoes and newly planted cotton patch. Jane was an incredible mother, wife and friend. She will be greatly missed and loved eternally by all. Visitation was held Sept. 21, at the Mechanicsville Chapel

of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the funeral was held on Sept. 22. Interment followed at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cemetery in West Point, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Operation Catnip of Richmond, 5724 Boydton Place, Richmond, Va. 23225.

Shirla Johnson JOHNSON, Shirla, 51, of Highland Springs, went to be with the Lord September 18, 2013. She is survived by her husband, Keith; children, Tina, April, Eric and Matt; five grandchildren; her sister, Sharon; and her faithful companion, Emma. The family received friends on Sept. 19 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services were held on Sept. 20. Interment was at Washington Memorial Park.

Charles McLennan McLENNAN, Charles I., 83, of Ruther Glen, went to be with the Lord on September 18, 2013. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo McLennan. He is survived by his daughters, Wanda M. Hall and her husband, Roger, and Linda G. Barrentine and her husband, Unray; his grandchildren, Travis Hall, Brandon Barrentine and Brittany Barrentine; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews; his Ruther Glen family, and Hunt Club friends. The family received friends on Sept. 20 at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Route 301 and Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville. Services were held on Sept. 21 at the funeral home. Interment was at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

Geraldine Smith SMITH, Geraldine Marshall Ferguson “Gerry,” age 90, died on September 19, 2013 after a long period of declining health. Mrs. Smith was born on March 11, 1923 in Williamsville, Va.

to Cecil Bateman Marshall and Hertha MacAllister Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Janie; her brother, Cecil B. Marshall Jr.; and her first husband, Homer E. Ferguson M.D. Mrs. Smith is survived by her devoted husband of 27 years, John H. Smith Jr.; her son, Richard Bateman Ferguson; daughter-in-law, Susan Toye Ferguson; and her beloved granddog, Maddie, all of Ashland. She is also survived by her sister, Winifred M. Hodge; her nephew, Kevin Hodge of Raleigh, N.C.; her niece, Martha Hodge Davis (Bruce) of Bella Vista, Ark.; great-nieces, Sarah Davis Facey (Eddie) and Rachel Davis of Decatur, Ga.; great-nephew, Dr. Jeremiah Davis of Seattle, Wash.; her sister-in-law, Dell Marshall; her nieces and nephew, Martha Marshall, Janie Wasmer (Jack) and Ronald Marshall, all of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Cindy Johnson (Jerome) of Loma Linda, Calif. Mrs. Smith is also survived by her husband’s family, Daniel (Ginny), Michael (Sharon), William (Cindy), all of Winchester, Va., and Ruth Ann Smith of Richmond. She leaves behind two very special lifelong friends, Martha Draper and “Boots” Boze. Mrs. Smith graduated from Williamsville High School and Grace Hospital School of Nursing, and spent the war years working at The Homestead, Bath County, Va. Upon her return to Richmond and subsequent marriage to Dr. Ferguson, she assisted in his practice and after his death, worked at Metropolitan Hospital retiring as nursing supervisor in 1986. She was truly called to nursing and wore her Grace Hospital cap and insignia with great pride. She was a charter member, along with her parents and Dr. Ferguson, of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she and Mr. Smith were active until her death. “Gerry” loved antiques and dogs, and was well known for making deviled eggs

and reservations. Visitation was held at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., on Sept. 22 and where funeral services were held Sept. 23 with Rev. Dr. Zolton J. Phillips III who officiated. Interment was in the family plot at Signal Hill in Hanover County. Please omit flowers. Kenneth Thomas THOMAS, Kenneth Wayne, 56, of St. Stephens Church, formerly of Mechanicsville, departed this life on September 19, 2013, following a short illness. Kenney was loved by all who had the privilege to know him, particularly for his kind and generous heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Dollie Thomas. Kenney is survived by his brother, Lewis Thomas of Bristol, Va.; his many nieces and nephews and his racing family at Newtown Dragway. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Tia Anne Redd REDD, Tia Anne, 30, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 17, 2013. She is survived by her father, Kevin Redd; mother, Anne Melton Redd; sister, Amy Redd; grandmother, Carolyn Benton; niece, Layla Marie Redd; and a host of extended family and friends. Tia was a very loving person, full of laughter and enjoyed every moment of life. She was very athletic and spent many years on the softball field. Tia brought a smile to everyone’s path she crossed. She will be deeply missed. A celebration of Tia’s life was held on Sept. 21, graveside was in see OBITUARIES, pg. 26
